"Like this next place going six. They they knew it same thing with Lsu. This is the kind of thing you can do. When you're playing at full capacity of talent and execution when they came out and then scored and Clemson by the way doesn't just come back like you know they they go they go down they come up at seventeen seven at one point and that seventeen seven seven? LSU special teams out there like fanning the ball and dancing because they know that offense is coming they know by the way defensively LSU made clemson punt nine. That's been Nana's trevor. Do Travel Ours is like I've never had to do anything this hard before my life on a football no like I imagine. He played Varsity as as a freshman in high school and he still never had to do anything as difficult as that. No in by the way they got off your chance like in astonishing running back brilliant talent. It's just a player. Who in five ers can go from sitting still to twenty miles an hour? Nuts the acceleration on the transit model is just other-worldly worldly and they had four dudes on him. The whole time my favorite sequence in the whole game. I believe it's an end of the first quarter. He dodges three tacklers three and then turns and there's a defensive tackle who falls on him. It's just not fair right like you did everything you're supposed to do. I made three elite defenders defenders. Miss me and the fourth is a three hundred pound man fell on me. We'll be back with more Spencer Hall but I is a New Year. Perfect perfect opportunity to take your business to the next level by hiring the right people but.

"That's that this is not what Clemson gets. It's the pitch. What they get to pitches? Wanted to come play for Clemson and compete for national titles and get drafted in the NFL. Because by the way we we can put. If you're a defensive linemen. We put four view in the draft at once. Easy three in the first round three three in the first round. Oh and after you want a national title and you beat up on who. Oh Yeah. That's right the existing belt older Alabama. Sue You beat the undertaker and then you get a first round. Pick House for recruiting. Pitch is pretty good explains a lot. I like everything about Clemson. He's up to coach. I told you that the other day and I used to like him. I there's there's a lot to like about like I love the way they play offense. They're aggressive. They put people in a space to succeed. They trust individual players and they claims freshman like remember Justin Ross Against Alabama. He's ruining that secondary as a kid who was playing high school the year before. This is one thing they will get enough credit for. They came out in a three one one set against that. LSU offense a three of bonkers. If Joe Borough had no idea what he was looking at for the first quarter none and then it didn't matter matter because he figured out just get the ball to tomorrow as he no defense consult us but Air Them to run and LSU did not run on them Lsu decided now doubling down sticking to this whole passing thing that's been working well and six hundred yards and forty plus points later there. We are what they do. Defensively Awesome Brett. Venables couples did a great job. I just don't think there is Tony. Romo made the best comment. I have heard in football commentary in years when Jim Nance asked him. What the Texans should do a pout? The chiefs offense which was ripping them up at this point in the king and gymnast says well what what do you do with this and Romo said well Jim if they had answers they would've used them by now. Instead it was the best in capsules. Encapsulation of I've I've got great answers. It's just that the problems are way bigger than those. Those answers right. I sometimes you see a team do that and you think a coach could just say well this guy here. Guess what. That guy doesn't matter when the other guys demar marches. Just doesn't do they woods. Katie City is scored the second touchdown. It was like okay. I don't it's going to happen now. The Johnson and it was it was done on that fourth and one was done over next. Choose rolled out there.

"I will watch that all day long but yeah when when carol when carol draft tyler lockett like i remember thinking like oh yeah that guy like i'm sure that you had a lot of data on it but ultimately a lot are those draft picks and you go well. Are we going to pull the trigger or not. I think it came down to. I remember that guy he ruled. Let's i can do michael bishop. His cousins remain play wire receiver and they were hill will on wheels also much bissett played basketball and just do incredible dunks inlay of line before the game like who goodness. I want to ask you this before we get out here for the studio. Some happened on twitter last week. That was hilarious and i feel bad for earl bennett 'cause. I don't know how he didn't realize what he was walking into where he has. The andrew luck retirement was the most bizarre story last ten years in sports and never mind the fact that the tiger woods story is still within a ten year window. Earl used to play college football. Is it really that boring. Forgive andrew bill that you didn't realize what else is going off. Everybody else. I mean qantas vanderbilt you know or one of their former coaches like work after he lost the job what he widened offer <hes> that by the way can your window what he wasn't hoffer at one point working in a toll booth and panhandle florida. There's a weird story doing another one colleague house. You want another one. Guess what college football has set a buffet for. You and it's open the steam trade. Just take as much as you like okay. I got you freeze it. Ole miss over here okay i've. I've got laremy tunsil who in the first round the n._f._l. Draft on draft night was extorted by a member of his entourage right his <hes> agent who i believe he was related to. I'm trying to remember you're in law or something but <hes> laremy tunsil <hes> his agent has spurred agent just posting a picture on laremy tunsil social media of him smoking weed to a gasmask bong okay. I'm not even like through the appetizers yet in terms of weird 'cause there's an entree back. There call bobby patino everything about all all of it. Just take it okay. It's it's all your okay the kenichi i've been like i've got stories about robert kenichi. You want any of them. They're all weirder weirder than than andrew. Luck retiring okay. There's a dead woman who never lived. There is a dead woman who never lived who then died and then everyone just sorta yeah i guess that happened and it turns out he wasn't real and it'd been skyping right from from the theoretical article dead with <hes> with one of notre dame's linebackers before the national title game yeah that happened and an internet site a blog log. It's been dot com found out about it. That's weird. You know. I mean you know what else like. If you just get to the little transactions college football's weirder like lane kiffin different got fired before the national title game. How do you do that. Lang tiffany got fired at the airport on a friday night and its replacement as much showed up drunk to practice fire like that that happened. I don't have to make any of this up all right there right like like if you look at players have gone on strike because they hated their coach. That never happens in football..

"You know what it is might be level is probably not up from the current management right like if deb over to ever take that alabama job it would happen after we engaged the shula protocol that i was talking talking about where we just hired mike shula so we can fire them again right like maybe he would do that but it's gonna be so late in his career at this point because he's older than people realize right. He's he's like fifty seven. I wanna say fifty six. He's he's. He's you know he's approaching sixty a time. When like some people reconsider things or if your bill snyder under your entering you're like you know ninety decade of coaching kansas state football and thinking about an additional century the office right so this l. tabo. I looked this up once when texas looking to hire saving which actually almost happened. We just kind of mind blowing you consider. I tried to look up like the most high profile coach go from one job to another and basically what i came up with was win. Johnny majors went from pittsburgh to tennessee and and you know what a national championship at pittsburgh at pittsburgh by being what close it has become now. You don't leave that to go somewhere else period. What would you you consider alabama to be. The crown jewel of of you know college football brands at the moment not jobs. It's a terrible job right as i say you might be the worst the job in america lucky i mean it's it's up there right or could the auburn depending. I feel like alabama's like being in a constant sort of pressure cooker filled with bees. We're at auburn like you know five out of seven days. It's pretty nice and then two out of seven days. You're just being beaten. Tires like like i feel like at auburn. It's just kinda like hey. We're all cool man. It's family by the way we're gonna go like beat you with towels loaded with stope right like that and then and they're gonna give you the next day like like offers actually way.

"A._c._c. See that you're really third defensively see see that you're like virginia. Tech had a better divas there year at florida state may have but they had three first round picks including mario r._e._o. Williams a gapes chuck amato amazing patio and by the way the fourth divas of live. It was also like a top half of the draft guy if you give me n._c. State at any point in their history sitting on eight wins and you asked me to be on the next four four straight losses. I'm putting goping mortgage on it. I know i don't understand how gravity works but i know not to jump off a tall things okay. I'm not entirely sure on the physics of swimming in flotation but i know not to go too far out in the water because i'll drown and you know what else i know. I know not to put my hopes too hard on any n._c. State team because once they hit eight wins they start looking at the raptors for for places to <hes> to jump let the law that sounds about right that that's about it but if they're like it's five and five in phasing number three florida state. There's a chance they might pull it out. Oh take a flyer man not that not that wagering is legal in all fifty the states but still take that flyer okay because that's when they are at their most dangerous states one of those schools where if you look at the people who played for for those people don't quite add up right to to what n._c. States record is right. They sort of they go out. I i like this approach for recruiting hooting though right if you're like hey listen. We're not really gonna push too hard but you'll get the n._f._l. Draft oh we'll get you. There and we'll get drafted right. This should be texas pitch right. I think it kind of has been texas's pitch or at least it wasn't like late stage. Mac territory was this was. Do you want to have a good time. You wanna win like no seven games. They games aims nine games. Just come on often man. You'll be visible. You'll get a tan. It'll be great. Here's what i don't like about. What's going on with clemson right now. They should be a renegade program right like program like that doesn't have really the recruiting ground naturally. There's supposed to have in order to win. You get good. We supposed to be asking questions all the time about how y'all doing this. We're supposed to be asking about win. The illegal show up aa shown up yet and it will be a lot more fun if they did not that. I want clinton to get down not that. I think clinton is cheating but we don't have a good renegade program anymore. We used to have lots of a we don't have one. I bet because people have gotten better at the beneficial to competition portions thousands of the program when it comes to being renegade program right like we're saying this. We're probably causing something to happen right now because you just said well we. I don't have a renegade program. That's what clemson should be. I don't know in six months. We could be reading about astonishing things happening clemson right we could be like i didn't know you. You could give a player like a cybernetic leg. I didn't know that all of these guys were thirty and actually n._f._l. Players playing for a spare paycheck on saturdays under pseudonyms right. I didn't know that the devils when he was running a money laundering ring right. I'm not saying any of these. Things are happening by the way but what i'm saying is every time we have things are really quiet at a program. They're like swans right. They'll up top serene than paddling like crazy underneath to compete and stay afloat. I'm real wary of saying that right because there could be renegade programs out there but for the moment i think we're taking over like extreme corporate model for how to run a college football program because there's so much money involved. No one wants to look too weird. No one wants to much suspicion from the n._c. Double a. and they just hope the n._c. Double a. and the schools will just focus on important things like keeping kids with brain moves from being eligible by football league man. I'm just saying we replaced daboh with barry switzer..

"Head coach defensive coordinator in britain venable brent venables is consistently the most bang thing for book that you can get four defensive coordinator in college football and they managed to keep him on the hook paying him a billion dollars a year giving giving him everything he wants and by the way when he left oklahoma and oklahoma left him he was done. It was time to go now. Oklahoma k. put a defense together the other <hes> <hes> yeah may maybe someone made a miscalculation here well. This calculations name was mike was what's what's bomb brought mike beck. Did we had a problem like coty series. He got fired from his last job because defense well. There's nothing happens to the defensive coordinator in that case and this this you know personnel. Drama was <hes> working for a defensive coordinator right. Daboh must be an amazing raising boss because at no point is gonna come in and go. You know what i think. I know how to do that better. That hasn't been the move for dab dab. Who is is a c._e._o. Slash cheerleader flash recruiter in chief right debo is not there to tell you how to do your job. You might have suggestions i. I don't want to downplay his football acumen because obviously he's got some. He has enough acumen. No let's let brent venables run the defense and do things his way. Also i give this title. Defence is big thing with clemson to you. Wanna impress me with your college. Football team is tell me you go sixty on your defensive line like if you start telling you go sixty on your defense in line with bosses okay now we can talk because that was the thing about miami through all that time they got lost due on the defensive line for that run of the two thousand thousands deep on the defensive line even texas during that run the mag brown head deboned defensive line and clemson last year was just like we have all the defensive lineman in the world all all of them yeah. If you wanna know if you wanna where two thousand nineteen is going to be different television series. It's going to be there because i don't really care who you are are. You don't reload from losing three first round picks on the defensive line. You don't somebody down the road. We'll be able to take advantage of that right and i. I don't really know who will be an a._c._c. There's a lot influx in the a._c._c. but on the whole somebody's going to be able to take a bite out of you up front because this this is another thing to think about the times that clemson and alabama have met and win. Clemson has managed to win facing alabama. They've caught some really really really outstanding bricks right. I don't think too was <hes>. Was you know really even ninety eighty percent in that title game. He was harried. I think get affected the play calling <hes> and then on top of that <hes> a slightly impaired to head facebook what he had to face a three headed first round monster right. Do you wanna i know why alabama's flustered and calling fake field goals where the lead blocker was holder. Let's not forget that by the way the canker they use the kicker as the lead blocker walker in a fake field goal in a national championship scenario and did not score a point after that so you know just wanna play man. Don't make it tick. We we watch alabama georgia do this last year. I can just implore everybody here. If it's fourth and you know manageable run a play don't take it okay because even if it's open gets you're asking execute a really important play at a crucial time someone who doesn't do this autumn with their arm funds tonight by the way as i recall the last team to have three first round picks on the defensive line in one year was north carolina state in the two thousand six draft and if i'm not mistaken they had the third best defense in the a._c._c..

"Maybe auburn every now and then otherwise you got nothing. You need a moonshot. You need a talented quarterback like especially like a generational talented quarterback or you need to be clemson. Who's figured something out about alabama that no one else has by the way bedlam ledlum eighty-eight eighteen in seven times. Seven times towel tied seven dives. That's all i got every time series wound up in a tie. I would have to ask the question who shaven oh. I know you know what just go ahead and count though oh seven for oklahoma state yes do it. Yes yeah those are those are winter oklahoma state if they only have eighteen total wins in the series of bedlam that it twenty-five because the ties a win for them there but here's what i think about what clemson one i feel like clemson's been doing this in a way that we forgotten how utterly staggering this is is that clemson has managed to pull this off. Somebody was made the comparison to me between clemson football n._c. State basketball where they would have been a lot happier if they'd never won those national championships because essar championships gave them a poor sense of who they actually were right like it gave them a belief in a ceiling that wasn't actually their ceiling until all of a sudden it did truly in fact become become the ceiling for clemson because clemson is a school in a small state with terrible public education <hes> there's nothing to indicate that they should be as good as they are except the fact that atlanta's started producing a lot more football players and they were just right up the street and then they could go get them okay coup but they are low key kind of a little engine that could in this. This is the idea that they are as good as they are. We don't have a lot of comparisons for this like the rise of the florida schools in the eighties and nineties but it was still florida the schools in south carolina yeah and it's not by the way like by the coast and south carolina. It's it's up in the corner. It's up. It's up in the hills. That's that's even more remote than say the rest of south carolina. It's not the capital city. It's not real close to the capital city. <hes> they the way they've done things right. I don't have like a definitive answer on. Here's exactly how clemson did it but they do a few things consistently that really really challenge teams like alabama alabama specifically and it's this <hes> they recruit like crazy right. They recruit especially hard at ah positions that matter like quarterback like wide receiver. They've quietly cranked out an impressive roster of receivers levers right. <hes> you know new calkins. <hes> you know this year. They have t- higgins and justin ross who both play in the n._f._l. <hes> mike mike williams. You know walk in sammy watkins. <hes> you know they recruit at the perimeter brilliantly and that that like if the design here and i don't think it's the design intentionally but if pays off you know in the national title game against alabama that's great. That's how you beat alabama. Is you take the bumpers resolve the defense you beat him at the perimeter and then you make them defend everything else. The other thing they've done is they've been brilliant about player development and about where they pull players <hes> <hes> if you look at at where they recruit yeah they recruit the same places everywhere else does but they target very very intelligently tele- gently and they sometimes find people who might be a bit under the radar and get in on the early right like christian wilkins christopher wilkins who was a defensive lineman a a first round pick this year in the n._f._l. Draft you know he was pulled from new england prep school right. That's that's and not because not not for his grades. I'm talking somebody who just went to a new england prep school and they pulled him. That's not typically where you hear about these guys but clemson on them early <hes> one other thing that keeps them and on this business they have a head.

"Right. And they just couldn't figure out how to fire me because I ended up winning the SEC. I don't know. Maybe ole miss, right? I lost two games. I'm already gotta get can't. So guess what? Year three fiesta man's running. I'm gonna go out there. And I'm gonna run the run-and-shoot. We're going to run a three three five and call the grits blitz. I'm just gonna run us offense. Right. I'm gonna bring both safeties and dude off the bench, and you're going to you're going to know what I'm doing. You're going to kind of respect it. 'cause you're gonna be like, hey, man. That's exactly what I would do. Somebody told me I only had a year to live. About maybe one day dab will take the job. If he does. Then you looks. There's no way he could be this stupid. Again, if dab if dabbled take that job, I know dabbled thinking about retirement, right? That's it. You know? I got I got a nice lake house. But I could have a nicer. It's also would want that job after Daboh because he's got us. That's still Clemson. This is this is actually one of the more miraculously things that anybody's ever pulled off. Oh in terms of value like, you know, value over replacement coach, right? Davos has hired the Nick savings seen Alabama to some extent before I've seen them be really consistently good for long, periods of time under different coaches. You seem that at Clemson no Devo should be paid more than Nick Sabin because for the particular peg and hole. There is no better fit. I still can't believe it like all of us. Who were crazy like it's hard to explain to people like the old the freezing coal takes guy dig up must damp over back in the day from time to time. And I'm like, I got no shame about this. Go back and watch what I was talking about at that moment. Though, what you were talking about was an absolute certainty that this person was never going to get them over the hub. Can I take you back to a specific date on which everybody was convinced? The Dabbagh was just another Tommy about that be JD very first twenty thirteen January fifth two thousand twelve your clothes the Orange Bowl. Yes. West Virginia, Clemson when when West Virginia under data Holson decided to put up seventy points on Clemson, including a second quarter where they hung thirty five on them. That that that date? If I told you step aside twenty is still going to be the coach, and he's going to have a national championship and multiple ACC titles. And yeah, you I would have been able to take all the bets. I would be much wealthier man, if I could have done that that that game's crazy, man. I mean, everything that has happened subsequently. I remember dabble. Did this thing? Somebody says I'm about Clinton, and he was like look look at all the things we've done we we we are past that. And is one of the rare times somebody says something like that. And I went back. I was like, you know, what you're one hundred percent, correct. And that means that you are superhero. Oh, remember too. Todd Boyd toss boy goes out and tells Boyd lays an egg against Florida state, and they suffer a beatdown at home like wealth that Abbas never gonna get devils. Never gonna get over the up, man. "For instance, when you stop doing that, you know, what happens when we come back and go, well, you lost two games, and you missed on it, Ohio recruit, and suddenly those things which were acceptable. Look so much larger than they used to look, right? Also, are you going to have the kind of thority right of the Sanders changed like this? Are you going to have the kind of thirty to go? Well, you know, we lost one game. But I'm gonna fire the sense of coordinator. Which is insane. Like by any objective measure if you lose one game, and you say, well, we need to make some staff changes. What? Can I just from a perspective of somebody who watches Florida football went nine and three this year? And I'm like, take it. Thank it. Just three losses. Only three awesome. I will take that especially in year one. If that had been I if you came to me and said, you know, you lose one game. You think you're gonna end up fire in an assistant. No, I don't think that's insane. But that's where a high state standard is right now that we look at Gratiot most state fans they sell that tomorrow. They need the right. They I mean, I don't disagree. Think about this is like saying you don't like the Cup holders on your McLaren. Right. This is like saying, you know, this seek cover on the floor the Ferrari little itchy. I think I'm going to get rid of it. That's that's where we're at with Ohio State. I don't disagree that that's the standard there at. I'm just the guy that they that put them there just left anyone who's going to be able to hold that is going to be a coach who has to be as good and as as urban Meyer. And that man that's that is not and I will say again as somebody who watched Florida football and the replacements that followed. That's not something I'm willing to bet you can just pick up on the streets. Yeah. By the way, we're gonna find out after herb leaves Ohio State that he's leaving behind something like way left behind that Florida. Because part of the thing for the successors is not all herbs fault, but some of it. Yeah. You know, I have a treat this like fall out. I don't know. Should we assume we're safe yet? Once you wait another year once you wait another year before you think about that. Why don't you see what's actually in there? Once you take a look, it's it's there's a half-life to this. And I don't know what it is. Because you don't know people assume they go oh man that programs in good shape. You don't know anything. Right. Most likely there's very few people know, what is happening in terms of the internal dynamics program and mind, you those are all real volatile too. Right. You know, what's keeping all Ababba football together and working like it is Nick Sabin. That's a great machine. But make no mistake the central organizing. Principle of Alabama football is Nick Sabin. It's not the boosters. If it was the boosters at this point who are certainly important to all tests that Mike Shula would've won championships. Right, then Dennis Francioni would've won championship. But that's not what's happening. Right. That's this is why you pay coaches, right? I'm not saying the coaches are paid inappropriate or. Just amount of money, especially, you know, relative to the unpaid labor that supports that. However, this is why they get those price tax because sometimes when they when they leave the thing that happened is a complete collapse of the program's overall operating dynamic, right? That's they're the ones who set the tone. They're the ones who set the key. And once they're gone, especially and I mean, if you don't teach any kind of processes, this is kinda why think Bambi okay for a while. Because one there they've got more talent than God to they have a system that's in place for how they do things that they'll at least be able to imitate pretty well. Right. Like, look at what less miles was able to do with everything that was set up pretty well at LSU and that he maintained pretty well. You'll be successful..

Was there ever eighty that made him just like have you ever Jay story about about fomer Spurrier like somehow, I don't know how this isn't like one of those? He's he went down there for I guess it was the ninety five. Yes. To bowl like the buccaneers job was open. And they asked us Spurrier about his name come up, and he's like, you know, don't think we're gonna take that job. I don't know what it is about. Sometimes these jobs come open, and some people's names just come up, and I guess my name is just one of them that people think about when he's jobs come open, and he's a pause. He goes. Let me ask you something. Why is it a feel full mors? Name never comes up. We need each jobs. Come. Why did you do? Just catching a straight. Such a straight. Like nobody's talking about him. They are bathing and indulge in the idea of what a great coach, you are that people want to hire you at the NFL designed to pull that one out right there. James? This is the other thing fomer really tried it recruiting it was pretty good. I mean, he had some good recruiters. You know, they did. Well, Spurs recruiting the worst like James Bates has a story. Everybody safe you commentator and former Florida linebacker and quite an artist Zona, right? If you go James pays the site. He does he does some spectacular pop-art around. SEC football. But he he said this was Spurs entire recruiting pitch. Please. I want you to imagine the entire nineties machine of Florida football, right? High scoring flashy insanely insanely swaggie football team. This was the recruiting pitch. He gave James Bates a linebacker from Tennessee. Well, basic, you know, most people work their whole lab. So they can come down to Florida. You could do it at age eighteen that was it. Do you wanna you wanna be a retiree at the age of eighteen? That was the James Bates. And they asked to you know, I mean did that appeal to you know, terrible recruiting pitch. But I went. Why would you say that? No, one to talk you out of this like this. You wonder what it had to be like these barriers assistant, right?.

"And he said, so did you you know, you could've walked away from this fight right trying to establish that maybe Billie Joe would acknowledge that he could have and set up a legal argument later. Instead Billy Joe shaver says I'm from Texas. I wouldn't walk away from the fight lawyers. Like oh God. Going to jail. I can't do anything about this. Oh god. That somebody needs to do this for sports, right, right? Like someone and the problem is no one would tell the truth that musicians tale about what goes on because like the eagles system around. All all these things always have these people around, right? And you have these people around, and then you on top of that have folks that have been incredibly coddled in a way that lead them to believe that they can really do whatever they want. Therefore, they actually do such things like we have a tales from the NBA. I is this amazing. The human ecosystem in everything that we would get out of that. Oh, I want. You know, all I want is. I want tales from the NBA nineteen ninety five to two thousand five. And here's the thing. You gotta wait like twenty year, wait until somebody's debt. Right. Like that that that helps a lot of these are about like, you know, somebody's about Rick James. Okay. Rick James, dad. Everybody's just gonna talk about Rick James. Right. And you know, some of these country dudes are dead George Jones's debt. Okay. Cool. We can tell all the doors Joan stories now all of them, right? That's the problem. You got to wait. So I'm just gonna put a little bookmark on this. And we're gonna come back to like fifteen years at least live longer. You're right. Yeah. That that's the other thing athletes do tend to live longer because they're literally physically fit for a living. Yes. A somebody is writing a book, by the way about the putting a book out about the jail blazers. And I have to buy it. Right. Oh, I need the audiobook I need the animated tales from the tour bus style breakdown of the Joe blazers all not Not only only do do I. I need to buy that book. I feel I gave I need to buy it read it, and then we need to book the writer 'cause I just can't imagine how how that book can't be amazing. Oh in Portland. That's the best part of the guys that up in Portland, Oregon. Yes, we are the black population. They end up in a place to where they go. Well, they're different. But they are weird. Where do we overlap? Where's the commonality all of these you have to remember the state of Oregon was founded with one little law? Then I don't know if everybody knows about you know, what that law was no black people allow no slavery just to be clear. But no black people out like that was that was the law in defending Portland, and is the cast of characters that they brought through is not just like it was just an NBA team. Right. They'd had that, you know, they have MAURICE Lucas Clyde Drexler Ed Terry, poor drone carseat bunk Williams, you know, they never they never had black people show up to play there before eight have those dudes though, I think about the where did that Randolph go to really get his head straight bivouacs? He really go to become the mayor the upstanding citizen where did he go to become a beloved member? Of the community that that Portland could never be for him 'cause Portland was just too. 'cause that environment around the Trail Blazers was just too distracting. Yes. One word for it. He went to Memphis. Yes. That's that's where he wet. Although I would like to note is does that Randolph that Portland got has shown up in Memphis. I don't know how long is careers. Right. Like like, luckily, he added chance to go. Learn things before he got there because the best. I mean what I'm saying? Is that Memphis fun town? Yes, it is an extremely fun town. It's not the kind of fun that I think helps you focus in prolong a professional athletes career got a lot of zag Randolph round. Memphis, go into people's houses shootin dice on the porch after games..

"Other than that, we spent a lot of time wondered if he knew what the hell he was doing. Yeah. And part he was learning on the job first time head coaches, you just have to come out and bit that and go and not only are they going to have to negotiate a lot of things they've never done before. You're going to have to do it in the shadow of one of the most coaches in the modern era. So early JIMBO you kinda give a path later Timbo you're not so sure you know, particularly like that post James team where you just don't feel like he ever sort of settled on a quarterback and just, yeah, I, it just it went badly and I don't know what to say them necessarily like you're not hearing a lot that's unique. Do you know what you're a lot this year? Same thing you hear when a new coach comes in, we're what we're more physical where more physical as a group, which I, that's good. I don't like spiritual football teams. I don't make metaphysical football teams to be there in person. I think it's a countdown to JIMBO stops calling his own plays and countdown to realize trolley strong quickly realized when he got to Texas, if you're going to recruit players from Texas, there's a certain kind of offense you have to run and it's not the one that Fisher runs. It's not the one that he has openly endorsed and emphasize this spring. Right? We'll go under center. We'll we'll run. I formation, right? We're runs with power formations. I mean, that's cool and everything, but I don't think that's how you're going to want exceed long-term at Texas or five the way Indian tire old southwest, Tom for metropolitan area. Notice what Arkansas dead after going to feel about trying to start with big man, big boy ball right now. They've gone back to. They got some use coach. They got clemson's offense of poor Nater Chad Morris because they've just admitted. Yeah, you know, we're a big twelve team plan and the SEC let's roll with it. Opposite of the strategy that is proven to be effective in beaten alaba-. Gamma. A lot easier to spread people out then I can just sort of put still players where did the right, as opposed to having these sort of inflexible roles that I can't really move around too much. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that is my man, Spencer hall, check him out as dot com. ESPN dot com. Is there any other like fun oddity of college football this year that you are looking forward to. Follow. I really enjoy old miss because typically would ole miss has a year where they're schizophrenic, where they're up one minute down the next where they have this unpredictability to them and causes a lot of stress because we're in your ear, four of coaches perio- year three or four player who needs to fulfill their talent, right. They have a lot of skill on offense. They have some skill on defense, they're going to blow some games. They're gonna make some games. They're just they're generating Zayed's and for once they can do it for everyone except miss fans, there's nothing to lose their no expectations whatsoever and throw the ball real well. And they have great skill players and nothing to lose. That's the team that I think if you're uninvested, you just go, hey, I, I like weird experiences. Just go ahead side on the old misty by the way, shout out to consonant apologies. We forgot about you also, but we know you're really good. You may that'll do it. You're so good, wholesome, Wisconsin. Yes. And they like jump around because you know, they love wrap up that way. I feel I read that's all drunk around for them because ain't nobody drinking more football games. I don't think Wisconsin, especially now if a cold outside. I mean, if it's that cold, you don't wanna feel anything anyway, like Wisconsin LSU goingto on the who can drink the most is game. It It makes. makes. It's cold. You're like, no, no, no sound sixty eight degrees. L. is Louisiana. That's all it is and I forgot they played each other was it was it last year? The year before they played at lambofield is somebody ran out Kahal that would be year before though. It would also show that Washington state fans for their ability to liking pillage towns and pick them dry Washington state, drank Auburn, dry. Wow. I don't know if that's because they're so sad to be at all, but so happy to be out of Pullman, Pullman down will do it, do it..

"Right? They just have a couple of Bilton obstacles in a couple of months that they've made for themselves. They have had a quarterback pan out. If a quarterback doesn't pan out, it's going to cripple a lot of what you try to do offense of -ly particularly when you run Jim Harbaugh system where the quarterbacks going to have to do some stuff they like to rely on the run game, like throw play action, but you have to cash in on the downfield shot. It just has to happen and addition to that, they play in in basically the the big ten east and playing in the big ten east. The last time there was a logjam like that that I can remember. It's like when the SEC east was actually good and you had Georgia Florida, Tennessee consistently knocking each other out and getting so much fired at the end of the year, right? Like every other year has something getting fire because they finished third bunch of times that wasn't the case last year, Michigan because I've been sports, which is worse. Shout out to Mark dantonio. We almost forget this. A Little Rock here from if you must go about whether or not he's going, keeps job keeping this out. That's all Mark dantonio doing right now, say like, what do you think he do? You think the Michigan state press corps asked him any questions about over Meyer? If they did, he's talking to answer the. Hoop, what? No, you wanna talk about injuries love to talk about injuries and do what he's doing is so unlikely though we have lost sight of the fact that winning Michigan state is hard. It's extremely difficult and it's extremely difficult to do on a consistent basis. Absolutely. No concern for static done if they have to it. That's exactly what they're going to do while running the offense every play and you know what they're going to do. They're going to beat the daylights. Well, like is those Mark dantonio running just more charming version will must jammed football and more consistent. So they like they've been productive in the past? Yeah. Have they put quarterbacks in the NFL? Absolutely. With any of that on purpose or has the first priority of design doubtful. We'll be back with Spencer hall. Just I, I wanna talk to you about ZipRecruiter. It's really hard to find the right person.

"He's actually a good quarterback was if he does play well who that's going to be frightening to be fair, four point, six billion dollars after taxes. What is that. That's that's just that's just a started life who can resist the siren song of following up a Heisman Trophy winner. That's the other thing I don't get is that she had baseball on the docket is ready to go. And he says, you know what? I think I'm exactly the person to follow up Baker Mayfield. Good job buddy, good job. Whatever ideas are due to still there and he's unfair. They're always going to have an astonishing amount of talent positions that other big twelve teams might not have right. Like someday we'll all do a great ceases on exactly how Oklahoma a program in a state that really shouldn't be this competitive that has another program in state, right? This should be an old Mississippi State situation. Somebody needs to figure out exactly how this happened because if you run the numbers, it looks improbable in terms of population in terms of the money and fault. And yet Oklahoma's almost always competitive in the past fifteen to twenty years. Actually, Oklahoma state's been consistently competitive. Oklahoma is Texas as Michigan is to Ohio, right? So there's always the border play that you can make, and then there's the other thing for Oklahoma, a spectacular amount of want to. They really, really, really wanted and Swiss auto by Peter president of, oh, you. About how they use their program to redeem self esteem, their people after the grapes of wrath and all that stuff about the Oki's and everything else. Like it matters to them in a much different way and whatever they gotta do to be good baby that is going to get done. Got oil money. Remember oil money is crazy, and it gets poured into a lot of places that you would expect like, say, football programs kept one booster keeper program competitive. I don't know. Look at Oklahoma state, got pickings writing checks for what three decades now the water managed to be nationally relevant before we look at Oklahoma thing about Oklahoma state is it is not in the part of Oklahoma that's close to Texas stuff is in the part of Oklahoma as close to Arkansas. They are just doing this checks, man and terms of numbers, you go, man, Oklahoma cut some people in it. Oklahoma has just a scotch more people just a pinch more than Connecticut ages want to get this thing here doing right. We'll, we'll go get from juke. Oh, we'll go get him from California. We'll do whatever it is, but we get this thing here. Texture doesn't want it to bed to be honest. They kind of do, but not in application in the way that Oklahoma does no kind of admire what Texas it. They started making a lot of money when a nine or ten games year players decided you know what I should a little bit. Awesome. Teaching me all kinds of thing. I'm expanding as person experiencing personal growth, not working too hard. This is all like, I know people talk about the last background years as being like, I don't know. The program was mismanaged. I was probably pretty good for the players. This is probably a real positive outcome for them. There is something to that part, right? Like try not to talk about Texas because charged up about it, but they should have one more game last year and they better games this year. Tom, making the the observer, who's looking at it and go, where do I get. My best book as a recruit as a player going in that late stage background, that looks delightful. That looks like a lot of fun for me. Right? It's it's like when I say, how do you can you compete against USC in recruiting? And the answer is you do not right if you see a player, for instance, who wants to go to Arizona state and they have Zona say, I coming out of high school, stop recruiting them. They've made their decision what they're going to do with their undergraduate life, and it's going to involve a fair amount of recovery leisure, and that's great. I endorse that. Yeah, man. So we'll, we'll just see is this it does Ron gives them so far..

"Now I figure we should move over to like Oklahoma this year because I feel like Oklahoma again is set up in a place where they could be great except I don't know of Kyla Murray can throw the ball and I do know that my stoops's their defensive coordinator and I don't think that's good. If you want to know the point where that particular liability becomes too obvious to bear for the people in Norman. This might be that year because I think Baker Mayfield he bought it out the on and a lot of way off the top of your head, you know, can you name to receivers on that spot? No. Yeah. Nobody else can't either. He was a player so good that he can upset every single position on the field and coverage simply with a couple of types of the field. Right? He and Lamar Jackson could both do that. I don't think column or is that kind of flare? Lincoln Riley might be the most intelligent together offense ivine in college football. I don't know if the margin of points that made them so successful last year going to be there. They wish look for something that people already kind of ticked off about. They were look for something that if you and I are talking about it, right, Oklahoma, people have been talking about for a long time. Yeah. Well, the thing with me Mike stoops's and I get it, you know, his brother, but my stews parlayed basically making a fool of Chris Simms into that Arezzo job and what got him fired at Arizona. You then hire him to run your defense. But I guess that's the story of college football, right. Get a deep is coordinated become a head coach, bad defense, then you hire him to run defense context. Is everything right? You go, that guy was not a winning team. He must be good. We should get him to right. Ask Nick Sabin assistant, how well this works for your Bank account. It works beautifully, but it terms of like I total defensive and a great stat. But like last year that happens sometimes could programs should that happen? Oklahoma probably shouldn't happen Oklahoma, right? If that happens, Oklahoma again, without Baker Mayfield kind of serving as a as a heel as a bomb for all their problems, no matter what happened. No, because guess what they were in two thousand sixteen. They were in the eighties. They were down there. I guess. I guess the defensive coordinator was. Yeah, that was that was still stoops. They gotta shoes? Yeah, they do. And I'm. Why is column Murphy playing football? He has been drafted to go play baseball. There is money in his hand Wisey there. I don't know, and you can get a free year Norman, Oklahoma, wouldn't you just take somebody else gonna pay it for you? What else? They the the Rivi era of Oklahoma Norman. I, I can't figure this out like as I look at it and again, he's so talented, but I'm still not sold that..

"This wouldn't be week if there is a weakness, the place that you can get them. If they don't have a dominant pass rush and they aren't able to bring linebackers with authority that you're going to be able to pick them apart in the secondary, Alabama usually lose today, Today the the filter. filter, they, they've lost a significant chunk of defense this year. That might be where you're able to pick them apart and believe it or not. And there's a couple of things on the who could do that, who I think are balanced enough and have enough talent at quarterback, just have to win a couple of those what I wanna matchups and really put pressure on their corners and and the words of Randy moss you start to take the top off of defense. And that does happen. Like the one thing with that defense is the pass rush is kind of hit or miss. Although in recent times they were hitting absolutely, and keep in mind. The largest portion, Nick Sabin playbook by number of pages is about into the secondary. He's a former db teaches a lot of himself. You'll never lose that in a nickname and defense, and I'm not talking by the way about real weakness. I'm talking about losing once a year. Gear, right? I'm talking look on Treadwell one on a coverage, right? I talking to sawn Watson making throws you have to put a tremendous amount of pressure there with a lot of talent in the last ten seasons. I think they've lost multiple games in the regular season once maybe twice. I can tell you that they'll have a bad night with overs maybe give up a few long haul and that will make the difference. The thing I have a hard time selling, say yours for more than one hundred one hundred fifty art. No, that's the part that I go with. Somebody says, oh yeah, you know, thick and run the ball on them. There's no evidence for that is what equal Elliott. Georgia had a pretty big game in the last year and still lost. I'm grasping at straws, right? You have to go back to like Marcus lot aboard. Didn't have one hundred yards rushing. And that was eight years ago. That's two full generations of recruiting cycles, right? To go that far. Now within the SEC I asked you, where are we now on these this Georgia team because the Georgia future looks like a machine. This might be the Twitter year feels like attended to kind of here because Jake Trump's gonna have to take a step forward. I don't think you lose a win. I don't think you loose on Michelle an adult that you lose Nick show without losing something Jake from his great right that offense of live going to be standing. But I don't see this happening without some stumbled along the way, particularly when you have to play difficult games like you have to do road game at South Carolina, right. Remember South Carolina doesn't wanna beat you. They just wanna hurt you and obstruct everything you can do. I think that's a very dangerous kind of team to face that you're coming off the championship, September eight. You're just gonna watch somebody throw a heavy rocket somebody having the way vision from. I mean, are we sure he's going to keep this job? Well, there's not much you're precedent for that. Immediately in terms of recent history, Athens right checkup Peason who has this job before? Got it, is the freshman beat him out for it. Jacob Beason as way the year before competing for the starting job hit Washington. So if Trump doesn't get this job, then he's got to go to like Hawaii. He can't even say on the coast, but it was his name feels is that the young fellow, this is embarrassment of riches that Georgia is at the moment, right? Not only has recruiting this well, elevated all Georgia prospects into foreign five star territory, right? I think that'd be like a quarter of the top one hundred right now for the two thousand nineteen class come from the state of Georgia. That might be a bit of a designation. It might also be testament to the power of Georgia recruited right now because everybody looks better when you're getting on this particular wagon..

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. My name is Bomani Jones. Say soliciting on the ESPN app, apple podcasts podcast. We appreciate it rate as review. Give us five stars. Only four stars. Probably going to a hater college. Football season is a coming program to do some variety of preview. And of course I'm going to a preview. I will do it with the best college football writer in America. His name is Spencer hall. Are you? Are you excited about our coming college football sees? I've ever really believe it until it happened, and they've made it worse this year because they're doing the same thing. They did last year where we have a weak euro where we get this kind of putters start real game kind of light, middle and shift of games as if just tested everyone's equipment. Right? Anybody played in Australia this year. Some funny like that. Go back with Stanford after that game. I don't think anyone. I'll tell you ever. Good lasted a month. I mean, I that's. mean, that's a horrible ideal paper, right? I know why everybody does. It would establish their footprint at all those places, but that flight is long. Jack, listen, you know, me, I believe in traveling outlandish distances for no apparent reason that too far. Did he go to the game, went to the game right? Fairly showed up. They prove nothing. And then they went home and they were tired for a month. I feel like they're going to play a game on a sound stage conspiracy theory, right? Could have been done now the that we know will never find Australia for game like that, of course, is Alabama because they don't believe in such things and the knock-on season which I find with by the way. I don't blame any SEC team that does not wanna go play more slobber knocker than they've already got on schedule, right. Want to go play, Alabama. You gotta go to what Dallas. Yeah, Houston for nasty team. Remember, they're happy. They're big. It's hard to find these big enough for everybody and they're also like, why? What do we get out of going to play at Wisconsin? I can think of a lot that was caused we get coming down here to play us. What are we going up there? We're going to recruit out of like anyone of those Claire. I don't. I don't see too many great defensive tackle prospects coming out of oak layer, not having it, but do they? Are they in, you got to quarterbacks. You got none category, or I wonder if we are a little more excited about to the, maybe we should be no. Quarterback two very different quarterbacks, right? They have one quarterback is ideal for running single wing run for his kind of often. That's at hurt, not a great passer, but competent in the right situation. When we're talking about polish players, take this sort of square peg and make them just round enough. I'm not talking about completely adapting. That's Jalen hurt and he's great at it. Then there's two, he's gonna go along the growth curve and he's gonna hit some hiccups. Do you know what's nice when you have a quarterback developing Damian Harris? Whatever else they got the backfield with Alabama. They're going to be little blip in this otherwise, huge wave of your throwing an opponent. I've not learning Alabama, running backs names. I just don't feel like it matters. No, I mean that the quarterback position to, oh, this is a quarterback controversy. We're all gonna learn things. Consolingly brought in and Knicks. It will come through on the other and go, well, you know, we all really learned a lot about gaming. Other teams watch. Nothing negative happened to elevate Dudek say, but nothing this will end up being a positive thing. Nick might MS lane a little bit though because I feel like their quarterback questions or less questions if they've got lane one hundred percent, we'll ever that even under pain of. No, no. Go ahead. Supplier also feel like the what they, he'd be willing to sacrifice even if it caused some chance to win something lane, Nikki's lane like you dog, but you have to give away, but you still love don't have enough house for. Wlove like armchairs couches the carpet ruin. So of that dog can't have them house. Now, here's my question about this Alabama team because I really do have a hard time year to year tell them apart where where where am I?.
