"And welcome back and really great to say hello to Brad Crawford from 24/7 as he looks ahead way too early order of finish and a preview of the upcoming college football season. It's never too early. It was spring practice opening around various camps. Some will come as the month of March unfolds. Brad, great to have you back with us. Thanks so much. Always good to have you on and I know some of this is pretty obvious. But tell us what you've dug up here as you are doing what all fans want to do and let's look ahead to the upcoming season. Yeah, thanks for having me, Paul. It's hard to believe Georgia won its second straight title only a few weeks ago and here we are talking about spring practice, but 2023 season has unofficially begun. I'm looking forward as an SEC media member to just see several of these cornerback competitions. We have the obvious one at Alabama between Jalen Miller. Ty Simpson with Notre-Dame OC Tommy Reese coming in there. We have an interesting situation at old miss with Jackson the incumbent for lane kiffin and now he's being pressed by Oklahoma state transfer Spencer Sanders, who's a four year starter in the big 12, by the way. And there are several others too. So I'm looking forward to seeing if any of these quarterback situations get solved over the next few months. Yeah, you mentioned the one at all mess and that's a good one just to dig into because everyone loves what lane kiffin has in that quarterback room and there's another one that dropped by as well. How do you think that will play out? Yeah, it seems like the writing is on the wall for Jackson dart to sort of lose his job this spring if he doesn't have a good 15 practice and then play well in the spring game there it'll miss. Obviously Spencer Sanders has a ton of numbers he's a guy with I think 85 or more touchdown passes out Oklahoma state ran a similar offense under Mike Gundy for the cowboys in the big 12 and he's the guy who is a plug and play and in the transfer portal call, especially at quarterback, you have to get someone who get there in early and early during the spring can instantly come into your quarterback room and give you QB one reps. And I don't think there's any kind of offense issues that spinster sand is going to have to learn. He's a guy who lane kiff and hand pick also have walker Howard there. So the O miss quarterback room for the next couple of years, especially 2023, is set in stone and if I'm Jackson dort, facing some pressure here going into spring practice. Another quarterback room that is interesting because it seems like it's been forever since there has been a debate. I guess the last time was literally when Alabama had Jalen hurts and to a tongue of our love, but what do you make out of the Alabama situation where they need to pick the right quarterback? That's the biggest key, taking the right quarterback. Tommy Reese is ultimately going to have that decision alongside Nick Saban. Things Jalen Miller and Paul showed us several times last fall that he's a dual threat guy. Maybe he's not as polished as a passer as bam was offensive staff would like to see right now, but he's going to get a chance. I think Melrose is going to enter Alabama spring practice as QB one and Tuscaloosa, ty Simpson based on the sources outspoken to there. He's a guy who obviously has a howitzer for an arm. And he's a former 5 star guy that Nick Saban knew would be an eventual store in Alabama. And I think it was very interesting is Saban was obviously confident in his quarterback room because he did not tap the transfer portal to get a Sam Hartman or someone like that, spends for Sanders. Those guys went elsewhere. So I think Sabin likes the two guys that he's going to sort of unleash during the spring and if I'm a betting odds maker right now, I go Jalen muro but ty Simpson is not far behind. Brad Crawford with us from 24/7. Brad, a lot of our guests at this point, a lot of people have varying opinions. Have surprised me because I mean, I can't remember the last time, even when LSU had Joe burrow that someone dared go against Alabama, but you seem to be holding holding firm right now in terms of picking the SEC west. Give us your reasoning why Alabama over LSU. Yeah, I think both of those teams right now have comparable rosters, but I'm just not sure LSU with pressure this time around is going to be able to put together an encore performance that's better than last year sending for finish. Jayden Daniels back in the back, they have Garrett nuss Meyer. He's a guy who might even press Jaden for some quarterback one honors. Now you have Harold Perkins, former financial linebacker who is my FrontRunner for STT preseason player of the year. However, you still have to go through Alabama to win the west. We've seen Nick Saban lose the SEC west before, come back the next season with a vengeance. I think a lot of us myself included were maybe too high on Alabama last season. I know we spoke at SEC media days last July and everybody assumed bamboo was going to be 15 and the greatest team on paper that we've seen in a decade plus and that just didn't happen. So I think you're going to see a motivated bunch in Tuscaloosa and as we see in the past as a dangerous scenario when Nick Saban has actual bullets and board material that he can feed into that crimson tide. Yeah, and Brad, most of that hype was coming from there because people close to that program said flat out. This might be, of course, we hear that a lot this might be Nick Saban's best team. And there was no reason not to buy into it. And I think when the draft comes around in 8 weeks, we'll start to look back and when there's an Alabama player taking one and maybe three will go what happened. But let me move on to Georgia. I think it's a foregone conclusion. They're the favorite to win the SEC, but the Bobo hire has drawn a lot of ire from some of our callers and our guests. How did you view it and do you think it's enough to keep Georgia from winning a third national championship? Yes, to me, it looks like Kirby smart sold has come. It may be a year and a half ago when Todd munk and his former OC first owned flirting with some of those open NFL positions, I think that's when he brought on Mike Bobo from auburn to be an analyst in Athens. And he just sort of shoehorned him in, like you said, to that OC role. I think Toyota is going to be fine based on how easy that schedule is, I was talking to some of the other day and I don't even think George is going to play a top 25 opponent until they go to Knoxville in November. So we're going to see a Georgia team that's really not battle tested to the first 8 to ten weeks of the season outside of maybe the gamecock game early against South Carolina between the hedges, but Jordan the team that right now is obviously no longer flying under the radar with back to back national titles and entering 2023 with the nation's longest winning strength, but the quarterback room right now is a question Carson bank was QB two behind steths and bat last year. I think he's the guy who's going to assume first team reps, but man, if anything goes wrong during spring camp or maybe he's not as good as advertised. As George is probable starting quarterback, then obviously brought Vande Griff another 5 stars. They're loaded there. He's a guy who's probably going to get some reps and get a chance to. I still like Georgia coming out of the SEC as a guaranteed layoff thing. Brad, before

"7 and one themselves in the last 8 ball games tied for the most bull win since the 2014 season. And they're trying to avoid their first losing season since 2001. They come into this game with a 6 and 6 record. Unique situation for those folks that haven't followed, Jim Leonard, the interim coach was offered a spot on Luke fickle staff, declined it, Luke fickle, and an article that was published way back in late November, early December, said that he wanted to have a hand in some of what was going on with their bull preparation. We'll see exactly what that means. But Brad, when you look at Wisconsin, an uncharacteristically poor performance for them, Oklahoma state limp to the finish and limped might be using that term extremely generously. When you're talking about dropping 5 of your final 7 games after starting the season 5 and you mentioned motivation early on in some of your bowl handicapping tidbits. Is this the poster child for it? Or do we think that both teams come in on a level playing field there? And this could actually boil down to true X's. So full behind the curtain where you can't be stuck with one position and be stubborn. Oh, I really like this team. I mean, within the first few days, I had bets on both teams in this one. Grant mertz is out. I took, okay, I'll take a Golden State plus three and a half. I mean, merch stinks, but I mean, who knows, Wisconsin have is a backup. And then right after that, I think, within 24 hours, Spencer Sanders is out of this game. He's not going to play. I thought there might be a chance that he would. Okay, I'll lay one with Wisconsin. No problem. I mean, the drop off from Spencer Sanders is the backups more significant than Graham mertz the backups, but I included this game. You read my mind. I wanted to throw a bone to the audience, talk about a couple of power 5 teams. But it also is the poster child for so much uncertainty. We're not just talking. We got a pair of teams back up quarterbacks. I mean, multiple significant players on both sides of the ball for both teams are out for this game. And I think people probably get a little bit paralysis by over analysis and probably will dive in. Well, who's this backup? Who's that back up? And how much is this guy worth? I just think it screams NFL pre season exhibition football. I think we saw one of them already this year in both season. It was Louisville, Cincinnati, very similar game. Brad, I don't want to talk about that game. I had the first half under and then watch that thing die in the vine. I was not too thrilled watching that wasabi Fenway boy. Yeah, so I was getting, oh my God, I was getting tweets and texts. How can you play under in this game? 21 7, another loser. So I was with you. And then what happened to say, it died. And pretty much played what we expected. Still went under. I think it's something similar here. Don't overthink it. I mean, you have so much uncertainty. You got bad backups playing. A lot of key leaders out. It's NFL preseason football and what's with those totals. They're a lot lower than the regular season total. So I'll put it that way. Yeah, I mean, the one good thing too, when you're talking about a Wisconsin game, I can't really see a defensive minded head coach playing with backup quarterbacks, and there's a lot of speculation in terms of what direction that the badgers will go talk to chase wolf will get a couple of series as the guy based on what he's put in for time, a 5th year senior called upon 12 times as the backup over the last couple of years. But discussion that they could use this as an extended spring practice for miles burkitt, who apparently they believe in. So you wonder what's going on between the back and forth between Luke fickle trying to figure out what he's going to have for players going forward, even if they did bring in Oklahoma transfer in Nick Evers. Versus a guy who's really made a lifelong commitment to being in the program. But regardless, Wisconsin's DNA at least for now still remains running the football in Braille and Allen will be that guy to try and carry The Rock against an Oklahoma state defense that quite frankly probably didn't get enough credit for how good they were late in the year when they went through the revolving door at starting quarterback. And I know they're without starters, mason Cobb and jabari Muhammad, I don't think it matters if you're down guys in the secondary against the badgers. But for me Brad, the one thing that's been wild to watch, the metamorphosis or whatever terminology you want to use for a high flying offense and still water. I mean, Oklahoma state has held 30 of its last 33 big 12 opponents under their season scoring average. They've won 81 consecutive games when holding its opponent to fewer than 20 points going all the way back to September 13th, 2003. It's actually the longest active stretch of time in the FBS and longest since 1980. They've held its opponent scoreless on its game opening drive and 30 of its past 43 games. And they've held their opponents to less than a 50% third down conversion rate in 36 out of the last 37, including over the past 37 games holding their opponents to about a 28% conversion rate on third down. So this isn't an Oklahoma state defense that we're talking about years ago when it was Josh fields under center in Oklahoma state had a score 60 to ensure a path to success and their ability to win football games. Yeah, a lot of those are those stats are under Jim noles and we expected to drop off roll Oklahoma state's defense. And there was. But what I liked is and it kind of makes some sense. As they adjusted the Derek mason's defensive philosophy and schemes, sure it would take a little bit. You would expect that, especially what were the team that lost a lot of key guys from that outstanding defense a year ago. And when it became more output on their shoulders, when Spencer Sanders is banged up and the offense is compromised, that defense I thought responded well. Down the stretch of the season where they could have waved the white flag things aren't going well. I mean, they respond. And if you don't believe me, I mean, their last 5 games, if you're scared about betting in under on an Oklahoma state game, well, your probably scared of making some money because the 5 strained unders to close out the season as they kind of leaned on that defense with that being said, several other starters are out, including their leading tackler, but again that maybe that would worry me against a team that's going up tempo and trying to air it out. You're not getting that with Wisconsin. I think Oklahoma state defensively after we had major question marks in the middle of October by the middle of October. I think they've answered some of them down the stretch. Yeah, it's such an interesting situation. Obviously, when you look at Oklahoma state, they would have loved to have Spencer Sanders here. You have Gunnar Gundy.

"Offense in the offense, a little banged up to your point. And I think the interesting element here is when you look at Oklahoma state defensively, if they were a stock, I don't think the bottom is in yet. This is just not the same caliber stop unit without Jim noles, right? And you have a Texas offense trending up with Quinn who is back in healthy and if you probably, I know the downgrade wasn't massive. But I think if you had him in for the full season, metrically you're probably looking at a better Texas offense. And you have bijan Robinson who continues to be the best back in the country. Number one. And yards per team plan on qualifying running backs. The one offense that Oklahoma state has played in the same class as Texas. It was TCU last week. 45% of TCUs runs for 5 or more yards. TCU registered a 16% explosive playwright against Oklahoma state. And I think we both looked at that game and said, wow, TCU is somehow down double digits at halftime despite. Out gaining Oklahoma state. And then in the second half, it was just domination, and they had a chance to cover that game. Overtime, had they got that fourth in 9 stop. The key factor for me is Oklahoma state's offense because I don't see a ton coming from their defense, even with the weather. But I just don't know how many stops the pokes get. Here's the good thing. It sounds like and we discussed this a little bit off air Spencer Sanders might get some healthier weapons around him. That's kind of the word. But Brad hit this perfectly. It's all about the number. And why it's moving is Spencer Sanders isn't a 100%. And that was the rumor last week. He was seen after warm ups with an ice wrap on his throwing shoulder. My understanding is required to pre game shot. So we saw Spencer Sanders not feeling a thing coming out red hot. When the shot wore off, he cooled dramatically. And you saw how impactful that was. Spencer Sanders tried pushing the ball downfield last week. He was three for 14 on passes of 15 plus yards with a pick. You couple that potential issue for Sanders with the 25 mph winds and supposedly their crosswinds right now, obviously. It's Wednesday, things can change. And keep an eye on that, but that's the reason we've gone from 65 and a half to 60 and a half some places. And let's not forget the longhorns defense has been absolutely lights out. We're now looking at a top 15 unit and schedule adjusted defensive efficiency. The secondary has been nails. Now you're looking at a very good LongHorn secondary, a less than 100% Spencer Sanders struggling to throw downfield. 25 mph crosswinds. Those are kind of the puzzle pieces as to why this side in total have moved. I am interested to see what number the eventual buybacks happen. And Brad, I know you're more of the numbers guy. Is it 7 if we see that? Or is it just too much matchup wise and injury wise to buy on Oklahoma state at 70? You need more than that? No, I think 7 would be the buyback. In fact, we've seen it at just a few spots. It lasted very, very shortly. A couple of 7s flashed on screen. After the original steam on Monday on Texas and there was a buyback, obviously, at that number. It's 7 for me. Although it's still going to be a big bet because I don't have great confidence in Spencer Sanders health and if he does take the shot and then on the other side, I don't have great confidence in Oklahoma state's defense. To get some stops here, even if there is some wind. Obviously, Texas I still think can gash Oklahoma state on the ground. So we're not there yet. And I'm not sure I'm even at 7. I'm going to be sitting there and saying, oh, I have to absolutely bet Oklahoma state right now. Yeah. I mean, you guys highlighted some of the concerns, and I think they've manifested themselves on the football field for Oklahoma state defensively, that there was going to be a drop off both in talent level and experience as long as well as defensive coordinator. I mean, Derek mason has had his challenges as we see Oklahoma state dropping from 9th to 75th in scoring defense. 5th to 63rd in yards per play allowed 5th to 46th in yards per rush out and 15th to a hundredth in ten yard plays aloud. The one area where the cowboys are very good is getting pressure and opposing quarterback. So with a young guy under center and Quinn ewers, that may be their best path to success if they can create a short field or two or get Texas behind the sticks. Should they be able to cover a potentially as a touchdown underdog. You can follow pain on Twitter at pain insider, follow Brad there as well at Brad power, 7 on Todd fuhrman, follow me at Todd for the most importantly, as always, follow the podcast at Bett the board pod. And gentlemen, from the big 12 to the SEC, a pair of games that will break down both involving schools from the great state of Mississippi. Mississippi state against an angry Alabama team finds themselves three touchdown underdogs in Tuscaloosa, total in this game at 61 and a half. And here are some numbers to think about in your handicap of this matchup. 49 to 9 41 zero 38 7 24 zero 31 24, 51 to three 31 to 6. 7 meetings. Brad, those aren't the numbers of Notre-Dame when they play in the college football playoff. Those are the scores of an Alabama takes on Mississippi state, where the tide of outscored the bulldogs 265 to 49 with 24 points coming in just one meeting. Guys, I know the power numbers suggest one thing matchup suggests another. Alabama has had a knack for completely clamping down on what Mississippi state wants to do offensively. Any reason to believe Brad something could be different this Saturday, Brian Denny stadium. No, I don't. And power rating scream that there should be some value here on Mississippi state, but I was still sitting there looking to bet on Sunday morning, Alabama. And you mentioned all those matchups against Mississippi state. The last two for me. I mean, 90 to 9 Sabin versus leech, 9 points and two games that Mississippi state offense could muster. And I also look, I mean, you don't get it too often, folks. Sometimes you got to take advantage. Nick Saban awful loss. Last 7 times, he's won all 7 by 31 points per game. More pertinent to our discussions on this podcast. He's covered the last 7 times off a straight up loss by 13 points per game. Just those couple of reasons right there is why Alabama is probably laying three points more than what they should be. And it's wild too to see former Alabama players, Marcus Mays, AJ McCARRON, basically calling out this current iteration of Alabama, something that we haven't grown accustomed to. So those players are on social media. They see some of those former Alabama greats. You have to imagine they'll play with hair on fire. And it's pretty wild when you look at Mississippi state, scoring just 9 points combined in the two games versus Alabama under Mike leech. Outside of those two Alabama games gentlemen, a Mike leach coach team has scored 9 or fewer points in a single game just 11 times during his entire tenure at Texas tech and Washington state. And Payne, you brought this up years ago, and we talked about Mike leitch when he was the head coach in Pullman. Every year in the Apple cup, Chris Peterson knew exactly what to do to shut down this offense. And unfortunately for the bulldogs, we've seen it twice so far on the road. They couldn't get the passing attack going against Kentucky. They couldn't get the passing attack going against LSU. Is this rinse and repeat one way traffic? Alabama runs the football. They clamp down a defense and this game potentially is over by halftime. I think you guys, again, hit it perfectly. And I think to Brad's point, the number is a touch high. But we were obviously at the Tennessee game last week. And viewing it there, it played a little bit differently than what I saw in the advanced box score. I mean, Tennessee played extremely well last week. That was their best game of the season. In their biggest game, they've had in ages. Alabama couldn't protect Bryce young. Alabama couldn't pressure hand in hooker. Alabama had 17 penalties. And then finally, when things were turning late first half, Alabama decided to be stupid on special teams and fumble one away. Alabama is still searching for answers at receiver. But with everything

"All the hype is about Carson bruner looking amazing this off season. He was solid in coverage and getting after the quarterback last year. Let's see if another year in the strength and conditioning program helps toughen him up a little bit. But to your point at the top with Washington's defense, it is impossible for the secondary not to regress with both Kyler Gordon and Trent mcduffie getting drafted inside the first 39 picks. As bad as that Washington defense was last season. They were top 5 in EPA per pass allowed. Less than 32% of past attempts create successful. There looks to be lots of mixed and matched pieces back there. Ace a Turner is Washington's best returning player in the secondary. Michelle Powell has shown to be a plus player Jordan perriman comes over from UC Davis, was solid there, but let's see if the uptick in offensive competition may be hinders his ability there. Overall, both the high end talent and depth decrease in Washington secondary. And that's a concern when you look at some of the pass offenses in this conference. I'm just disappointed. We didn't get to hear you pronounce some of these Washington defenders names in their entirety. I was really looking forward to instead of going ZTF, you were going to try and go with Zion topola fatui and I'm obviously butchering it or like you said for thule up front. I mean, you could say the thule gusano as many times as you want, but there's no doubt these Polynesian names will definitely challenge our aptitude week in week out if we find ourselves talking about the Washington husky stop unit. For the sake of their families, I'm just going with first names, whatever is easiest. Nicknames. That's what we're going with. A man who goes by one name himself. Anointing defensive players on the Washington huskies, one name nicknames as well. I can applaud that kind of effort. From Washington and all the question marks they have defensively even with optimism around the offensive unit. We'll head to Middle America and talk about the Notre-Dame fighting Irish. And when you look at the Irish, obviously no odds to win a conference because they're not in one as of yet. But their win total, it's at 8 and a half. You do have to lay a dollar 40 if you want to go over the total. Fans, they grew somewhat tired of Brian Kelly, despite his 54 victories in 5 seasons because Notre-Dame couldn't find a way to break through against the upper Echelon. Obviously the last time we saw Notre-Dame, they were busy blowing a 21 point lead in the Fiesta bowl, but the fan base obviously has put all of their energies and efforts behind loving Marcus Freeman. So he's given a free pass for the adjustments he did not make in a second half. Thankfully to our benefit pain is Oklahoma state ticket holders in that game. When you look at Notre-Dame this season and I guess the overarching question is this while they go through a period of transition, will it ten win season in year one be considered a success if the Irish run the table against everybody not named Ohio State and Clemson or do Notre-Dame fans? Are they conditioned to expect more? And it feels like they need to see this team really pull off one marquee upset to believe that Marcus Freeman is going to be their guy to take them to the levels that Brian Kelly couldn't achieve. Isn't there wind total 8 and a half? I know what their win total is are, but at the same time there are fan bases that create unrealistic expectations and we'll get to one of those when we start to move down the coast in a Southern California, but if you talk to Irish fans, if you look at the schedule and if they were to lose to Ohio State Clemson, let's throw in a third loss to say either BYU North Carolina or USC and they finished 9 and three. I do wonder if they see that season as success despite exceeding odds makers expectations. As it stands right now, right before we get to the offense in the defense. I have Notre-Dame a clear favorite in 9 games. 15 point dog in the opener at Ohio State coin flip hosting Clemson three point road favorite at USA. But it really feels like there's a ton of variants with Notre-Dame. There's this wide range of what Tyler Buckner can be this season. If he's elite, 11 and one gets Notre-Dame to the college football playoff if the one loss is opening week at Ohio State or Clemson becomes the best team in football. If Buckner doesn't play to his potential, eclipsing the 8 and a half window could be difficult. There's something in my gut similar to yours. It sounds like that's not ready to buy this staff. Marcus Freeman undoubtedly is a good defensive mind. He is one of the it coaches on the recruiting trail right now. It won't end there, but Notre-Dame currently has the number one class in 2023. He's relatable to the players. He's smart, the staff has that new car smell on it where you can sell a vision, which is easier than having proof. But literally ten months ago, the most knowledgeable Notre-Dame fans were bitching about Freeman's defensive scheme in game plans against FSU and delito. Just this past January, you mentioned, right? The defensive savant Marcus Freeman is blowing 21 point leads in his first game as head coach to an Oklahoma state offense outside the top 50. So there are some things here that you will put some respect on Spencer Sanders name pain for what he did down there in Glendale that fine second half. It was a fantastic second half. I won't disagree. I do appreciate you as we're on our recruiting trip dinner. Not telling the person that said they had to leave in the second half because he could see where it was going and it was cold. That we had in Oklahoma state ticket. I don't like to rub salt in people's wounds. That's something that you do to me on a week in week out basis throughout the course of our college football and NFL trials and tribulations. You don't actually believe that. No, I don't, but I still will never forgive you for the Alamo bowl, but I'm not going to relive it again here today, despite us having already broken down Oregon. Let's get to understand offense already. All right. Lead us to the promised land. So when you look at the Irish offense, Tommy Reese, I have to give him a ton of credit for some of what he's been able to accomplish. The only returning coach on the offensive side of the ball. He'll have his third starting quarterback in three years. You mentioned it Tyler Buckner poised to take over for Jack Cohn who inherited the role from Ian book before that. When we saw Buckner a season ago, run first guy, the biggest question I think every Notre-Dame fan in handicap or alike will ask themselves is can he improve as a reliable passer? Accuracy was the major concern and he didn't unfortunately have live reps in the blue gold game because he was

"In all of college football after forcing 98 punts. They forced three and outs on 45% of all drives. You don't have that working in your favor going into this season. So Derek mason is going to be tasked with a rebuild and Oklahoma state despite all the steps forward that they've made within the conference and upgrading their overall talent level doesn't reload the same way as an Alabama, a Georgia or even Ohio State can defensively with athletes and playmakers. It's going to be nearly impossible replacing that combination of Jim Knowles and nearly 65% of the defensive production in one off season. That pokes defense was. I mean, special last year. And it was well rounded. They stuffed over 25% of runs that was third best in the country. There were top 6 and both opponent adjusted EPA per pass allowed and coverage grade with all the exotic looks, the front would give an offense and the way Jim Knowles blitzed. The pokes had a 16% front 7 havoc rate third in passing down sack rate. They got off the field on third downs. And on the off chance you penetrated their green zone, they only surrendered 3.1 points per trip. So every facet of the defense was exceptional. Now, I don't know if you meant to do this, but you made an example of Stanford's defense in the PAC 12 being able to adjust to some of the wide open offenses. And the man that was responsible for that is now Oklahoma state's defense coordinator, Derek mason. He is coming over from auburn. He's actually looking for stability with his head coach. That's why he's here. Not Dave ringing endorsement of Brian Harrison's future. We'll get there in a couple of weeks with the SEC. When you can get off a sink. When you can get off a sinking ship pain, you get off a sinking ship. There are lots of the same principles as gymnast defense. Derek mason is going to run this similar four two 5. In year one at auburn, he led a defense that finished top 20 in schedule adjusted efficiency. And again, we know what his claim to fame was during that four year stint at Stanford, where he was the guy that figured out how to slow down chip Kelly and Marcus Mariota. And that ultimately got him the head coaching job at vandy. Back to the pokes here this season. There's going to be regression, right? It's impossible not to, like, 7 starters are gone, 6 of your top 8 tacklers. And some of your most versatile chess pieces in the secondary have all moved on. And that's important when you kind of think about a 4.25 defense losing some of those pieces in the secondary. The front should be the strength again, Colin Oliver has a chance to be as good as any defensive end in the country. More than a 17% pressure rate on pass rush snaps is a true freshman. Brendan Evers has experienced some hype around him. You have trace Ford returning from injury. Tyler Tracy and Brock Martin have actually performed better than some of the gentlemen that are projected to start in front of them, but there's some depth along the defensive line. It's a really nice rotation upfront. Where are the question marks lie? The back 7, which is one returning starter. Linebacker room is basically a three star Texas tech commit that went juco and then landed and still water in a Xavier Benson. Lots of hype around mason Cobb because of his speed and athleticism. He's young. He can improve, played 79 snaps last season great at Oklahoma state's worst defender. And that's the guy everyone's kind of hanging their hat on in the middle. We'll see how that materializes. In the secondary, you have jabar Muhammad. You have Cory black, both got their feet wet last season with 500 snaps between them, both graded out positively, but their roles are going to expand and they have to play it last year's level to fill the void. Jason Taylor at safety, the clear leader in the secondary and probably the leader of this defense because he can see everything from behind and that's important in a 4.25. The good thing for Derek mason. He'll have about a month to implement his subtle changes. Get a feel for his new players, what they can and can't do. Guys like trace Ford can kind of re acclimate after that serious injury because it's CMU. ASU, who is a disaster right now, Arkansas pine bluff as bad as it gets, and then Baylor's the first month of the season. Probably the best time to play them as Grimes deals with some offensive change himself. You have a chance here to kind of get some things figured out the first month to where you can build confidence in my mind and the regression might not be as massive as we're potentially projecting here Todd defensively. No faith in Jim mcelwain and Lou Nichols to come storming into boon pick and stadium in the opening week and allow central Michigan to put a scare in Oklahoma state, huh? It's a decent offense. I just think the talent gap is probably pretty wide. What are we projecting them at? It is a top 75 offense. CME is going to have? Goodbye, max standards, but obviously not what Derek mason and company are going to encounter much later in the season when they get into the heart of the conference schedule. So it'll be interesting to see what Oklahoma state looks like and to your point of Spencer Sanders who enters his fourth year. I actually had a double check as starter of this Oklahoma state offense. Can show that level of maturation. He'll figure something out one way or another to try and prolong his time on a college campus as a starter. The team that knocked off Oklahoma state to go to win the conference championship last year was the aforementioned Baylor bears. And when you look at Baylor their win total at FanDuel sportsbook, 7 and a half, you do have to lay a dollar 50 to go over. They are 6 to one to come out of the conference. And when you look at Baylor, the biggest improvement in the country is season ago. The group has said that they aren't complacent after what unfolded last off season. And Dave Iran, you know, was one of the more underrated head coach. I don't think coaches. I don't think that's the case anymore when you see the contract extension. And when you hear some or read some of his comments this off season, he knows that this group wasn't satisfied with the results last year, despite winning a big bowl game against old miss. Can they follow it up and prove that they're able to do it again? Oddly enough, when you look at Baylor, they've been in the conference title game two of the past three years and have 6 double digit win seasons and three big 12 championships since 2011. So we don't think about them as they model of consistency and staying power, but they've been that other than a couple of the seasons where they fell off the radar in the wake of the art brio situation. When you look at the offense, you talked about Jeff Grimes a little bit earlier. Gonna look much different. Gary bohannon is gone Blake shape and wins the starting quarterback battle in the spring.

"At auburn, at least early on before the wheels kind of fell off the tigers. When you look at coach Gundy, he's now the third longest tenured coach in all of division one football. Last year though, they won 6 of 8 games decided by one score margins. And the problem for Oklahoma state, they lost more than 300 career starts, including most of their starters on defense. So if we look at this Oklahoma state team last year broke the DNA, it was defense first. They had a claw control type offense. They wanted to establish the ground game, but Spencer Sanders receiving all sorts of preseason accolades first team all big 12 going into it. But this was an Oklahoma state team that ran the ball more in league play. Than anybody, 448 rushing attempts pain, but the average is 5 and a half yards per play a far cry from the explosive attacks that we'd seen from the likes of Dez Bryant and blackman in years past. When you look at Oklahoma state this season, is this a good old throwback type edition where they're going to have to outscore their opponents? That's a good question. I think the better question is what year is this for Spencer Sanders feels like season 17 or 18 maybe? I mean, he's on the Timmy Chang plan, so he's allowed to be on campus with COVID, a 6 year I figure he's got about 8 good years that he'll be able to see reps in some meaningful shape or form. He did improve in some areas last year. His adjusted accuracy clipped 75% for the first time in his career. He appeared to mature some with the mental side of the game, right? Previously, when he'd make a mistake, the head would drop, his body language was terrible. You can't have that from the quarterback position because everyone looks up to him. They look to him for guidance and leadership and tough times and it just wasn't there most times. But you go back to last year, did he play well against Baylor? No, he had four picks, but he still gave them a chance to win late. The body language wasn't terrible. They battled back down 21 against Notre-Dame in the bowl game. His vibe just felt a little different. That said he's still a guy with 40 turnovers in 32 starts. Sanders is kind of still the starting quarterback here of an offense that's regressed three straight seasons and schedule just efficiency. So I don't really know if they can get much better and you're looking at this team in general and you're kind of hinting at this. The offense has to be better because we know the defense is going to regress. Surely. So Gundy and Spencer Sanders kind of have to get this offense heading back to where it was in 2019. The dilemma from strictly Spencer Sanders perspective is if Gundy tries to open things up, do you see this flood of turnovers that ensue? One thing is pretty clear. Gundy knew his defense was elite last season. Very conservative offense. Oklahoma state's early down run rate approach 60%. When Sanders did throw, averaged up the target was below the big 12 average. 21% of Spencer Sanders throws were behind the line of scrimmage. Another 32% within 9 yards of the line is very much only 12% deep passes. Super conservative play calling. That's why Oklahoma state was outside the top 80 in explosiveness. I don't know if the offense can go that route and be conservative this season knowing the drop off that's going to happen on defense. You also are going to be dealing with life without Jalen Warren and Tay Martin. That could be tough. Jalen Warren finished 9th in elusiveness among running backs with at least 200 attempts. Tay Martin averaged more than 2.4 yards per route run and spends their Sanders passer rating. 32 points higher when targeting Tay Martin compared to his overall passer rating. You do have Brennan Presley who emerged last season. He's a nice piece. Jaden bray has elite speed if he can fix the 24% drop rate and get that figured out. He could be something. There is some depth at the position and then the top player in the 2022 class was a high four star receiver. Taylor Sharon, who was an early enrollee, Gundy thinks he could make an early impact. Let's see there. Offensive line to your point has some question marks. All three interior sponsor filled with productive returning experience. You did add KC Collier, the USC tackle, who transferred in. He is the projected starter at left tackle. Right tackle is the question mark, along with depth. You lose 6 scholarship linemen through graduation and transfers this off season there's going to be a depth problem. So that is something to monitor pretty quickly. And we've kind of outlined Spencer Sanders issues under pressure despite being really mobile, did improve that area touch last season, but traditionally been horrific under pressure. So if the O line suffers some injuries and they have no depth, something to really make a massive adjustment on offensively. Now, schedule of defenses as we've mentioned throughout so far of the big 12, not overly daunting. Arkansas pine bluff one of the worst football teams on earth, including all of the Friday night tykes teams. The 11 other FBS opponents have a projected defensive efficiency rank of 60 seconds. 60 seconds, just not very good. Not a single defense on Oklahoma state schedule. We project inside our top 20. So that is a breath of fresh air for an offense that's looking for improvement. And I think one thing Todd, you kind of texted me yesterday in a conversation was thought the big 12 in general would be kind of going back to its old ways. Was that what it was? You made a reference to the big tent. Yeah, no, I think the big 12, I mean, and we've only broken down obviously three teams so far. We have a couple left to go, but it feels like there's a lot more offensive firepower to be excited about. Then some of the defensive routes that we saw last year from teams that kind of surprise us for a lack of a better term. You look at a team like West Virginia that was good defensively last year. You look at a team like Oklahoma state Baylor brought their brand of hard nosed football. Almost a reminder of what you saw from Stanford, all those years when Oregon wanted to go lights out, breakneck pace, Stanford wanted to try and hitch you in the mouth. This year feels like all the offenses will be significantly ahead of the defenses. And it's going to be a lot of 45, 42 type shootouts where you need your playmakers to raise their level of play. And for Oklahoma state, this had been their DNA. I mean, last year was more or less the anomaly, but they had a starting defense that was older than a lot of groups in the National Football League and it's what allowed Jim Knowles to implement such a complex system in scheme that they were able to reap their benefits to Spencer Sanders credit. He did play his best game of the entire season last year in the bowl against Notre-Dame, so maybe that's reason to believe that he can use that as a building block going forward. And if you back out the two games against Baylor, he finished the season with a 19 5 touchdown to interception ratio. But Sanders won't have the luxury of a stop unit that was outstanding, as we mentioned, they held league opponents last year to less than 16 points per game and under 4.6 yards per play. They led the FBS in sacks and tackles for loss per game and finished number three nationally in third down defense number four and stop rate at number 5 against the run, but suddenly paying you lose 8 seniors that contributed 230 plus starts was the most experienced defense in all of college football after forcing 98 punts. They forced three and outs on 45% of all drives. You don't have that working in your favor going into this season.

"We had some guys that went off to New York and worked on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films. We had a couple guys go off to work at visual effects houses. We had some that went off to China and worked in documentary films there. And so I guess they all kind of took me under their wing and I got to kind of see life through their eyes for a while and day onboard me to their projects as this young kid that was getting really shitty duties on their projects, but it was dope. And eventually, I got good at editing. So I became an editor at freelance editor while I was still in high school and all that. I ended up working with ray on television, Hong Kong. I was editing some of their documentaries and a buddy of mine that I worked with in the corporate world. We were both moonlighting in the film industry. He ended up going to the American Film Institute. He became a directing fellow there. And I edited the three short films that got him accepted into the American Film Institute. So that was just that kind of set me up and then I worked at my first agency ever. I worked at as a video editor initially, kind of cutting together demo reels for them and content for their clients and then they turned me into a flash developer before flash got killed off by Apple. Steve Jobs in one letter, they turned me more into a dev than anyone else and kind of let me see what happened when you press a button and something bounces on a screen. They did that. And I think in a big way kind of set me up for where I'm at now. So you kind of got introduced in the tech at an early age, but through media. I think that's pretty cool. Yeah, I mean, I really just always love the creative process and being able to geek out to kind of pull that process together. It's been a lot of fun. It's been a lot of fun and you see a lot of stuff and yeah, I think the common thread in my career though has been being on the cutting edge of technology. So whether it was the film and using Jane TS versions of file with the pro on these ridiculously powerful computers, I did a stint at Canada pension plan, investment board. So I was a systems analyst for them. Working on some hardcore service stuff years later after film and agency stuff working in AR and VR again cutting edge of technology. So I think that's always been kind of the constant in my life and in my career. And now you went to Ryerson university, which I think by the time this interview comes out, people know it's now Toronto metropolitan university. But you majored in fine and studio arts as part of their new media program, they're like, what was your time there? It wasn't great. You know, so I went to I went to Ryerson because the founder of my first agency, he was actually in my batch the first batch of new media graduates at Ryerson. That guy has always been like my hero and I love him to death. Shout out to Spence Spencer Sanders. I kind of want to be like him. "And I think that's the area of weakness also for David randa's defense. Is that secondary? I don't think spends her Sanders is going to completely shred you. I don't think he's competent enough to be like, hey, we're just going to dominate through the air and take advantage of a secondary that's outside the top 15 passing success rate and they had some breakdowns in the back end two huge gashes last week against Texas tech. But I do think he can be efficient enough to find Tay Martin and have some success through the air there. So this to me is as we wake up this morning Todd. We're starting to see some of the sharper shops trend back towards 6 on Oklahoma state. And. Match up wise, I can see why. Yeah, they're definitely aren't a whole lot of advantages for Baylor, and I think you talking about some of the big plays they gave up to Texas tech, somewhat uncharacteristic, but it's a secondary that shown some vulnerability in the past for me going back and watching some of the Oklahoma state Oklahoma game other than the tempo that coach Gundy's bunch employed early on in that game. I think it was really the first time all year that we saw Spencer Sanders lean a lot more on his legs, which creates a different dynamic that Baylor is going to have to contend with as well. 16 carries for 93 yards, including a long of 37 and whether that was by design or necessity with an Oklahoma state ground game headline by Jalen Warren that really hasn't been as dynamic, it's still a different element to see Sanders running because he has improved as a passer to your point. And when you look at what he's accomplished, I mean, this is a guy who's not going to blow you away with any of his measurables, but still 23 and 7 as a starting quarterback. He's been a little bit better in terms of protecting the football. And when you have a veteran laden defense that Jim Knowles has continued to heat more on their plate each and every week, it allows you that luxury and flexibility where your quarterback doesn't have to be the be all end all and you're okay saying if we need a punt and pin, our defense will get the ball back and we'll be able to flip the field. Completely agree. And that is the one element that you have to factor in as well. When you have that mobile quarterback in the game heightens all of a sudden, we have to factor in a different type of offense. We're going to probably tick that offense up in a mobile game where it's a must win situation or it's a monster game, right? You're not going to have Spencer Sanders run 19 times against Tulsa, but in the biggest game of the season you will in a virtual elimination game you will, and so you have to factor that into price. And I think the other thing here when we look at Dave a Randy, he's done a fantastic job, right? But still just year two. Dealt with a pandemic. He doesn't have the best horses. He doesn't have all the guys necessary. It's a lot of scheme driven stuff, defensively. But even looking at this, like Baylor's early down defense, like teams have had success bypassing third down on first and second down. There's also an early down advantage for Oklahoma state offensively. So are you going to be able to get Spencer Sanders into third down situations? Wear Oklahoma state struggled a little bit and then Aranda can steam things up to make Spencer Sanders uncomfortable. That'll be the key here. Again, I think the scheme is the best part of Baylor's defense. But if you can't get Spencer Sanders in third and medium, then all of a sudden, the scheme isn't as impactful. Yeah, so much in play here. Two teams unfamiliar with a game of this magnitude, at least for the most part, I know Baylor is here a couple of years ago, but for Oklahoma state, they'd love nothing more than to be able to cement this season with a conference championship outright for the first time in an eternity. So it should be a hell of a game Saturday early on 11 a.m. kick-off from Arlington. American athletic conference championship pain played at historic nippert stadium the home of the Cincinnati bear cats. It's Cincinnati, a ten and a half point home favorite is the welcome in the Houston cougars total in the game 52 and a half. At FanDuel sportsbook, the bear cats, the first non power 5 team to reach 12 O since UCF accomplished the feedback in 2009. And just the 5th to do so since Houston in 2011, pair of the top defenses in the AAC top two in yards per play allowed and yards per carry. When you look at Houston's defense, they have a significant and perhaps critical edge in the run game the cougars are 8th in the FBS allowing just 98 rushing yards per game and tenth allowing shade more than three yards per carry. Both teams allow less than 20 points per game and top ten nationally in yards per play allowed. But pain, you know, we were talking off air about Cincinnati and the narrative and people talking about the style points that they had to try and pick up in games against the likes of temple or South Florida outlasting Tulsa. In the last two weeks, the bear cats defense has reminded us exactly why this unit was so highly regarded coming into the season because it's rare at a group of 5 team has three players that will most likely be playing on Sunday and you can make the case that their defensive performance against SMU at home and east Carolina on the road last Friday where the two best that we've seen them put on the books in quite some time. There's no doubt about that. It almost feels like now that there's not this fear of being excluded if you run the table that there's an actual chance to make the college football playoff. Cincinnati's turned it back on again. You just hammered SMU and ECU, the game's not really close and now you have Houston in the title game and this is probably going to sound pretty similar to the breakdown we had when Cincinnati played SMU because we've seen this movie before. Not just a couple of weeks ago, but like multiple times over multiple seasons at this level with the kinds of recruits that play in the AAC, you're not going to beat Cincinnati throwing the ball. And the best teams in the AAC throw. And that is why the bear cats have been dominant. Now Houston does run at a touch more than SMU..

"An attempt with a one 32 passer rating. You get that guy Friday night against Utah along with this inflated price in the ducks your PAC 12 champs. But that's a big F, and if Mario and moorhead both have one foot out the door, the inflated price I mentioned is it going to freaking matter. So I'm still kind of poking around here informationally. It's very clear that the number grabbers the value hunters have certainly taken early weak position on the ducks and they did so it plus three. It'll be interesting. Ultimately, I think this game probably should be priced more like a pickup. But you do have some external circumstances past just the game that I still want to kind of figure out here. Yeah, perception definitely takes on a big role, but it's pretty wild to think about a game where recreational betters were jumping over men women and children to try and take the ducks plus three in Salt Lake City and in this particular spot, a little bit of a different narrative laying out early on when you see indications that the betting will be much more balanced and it's the professional better is trying to grab any three and a half that were out there even gobbling up to your point. Some of the threes that were there. From Friday night into Saturday yet another rematch this time it's in the big 12 championship game. Where Oklahoma state and Baylor will go down to Arlington to do battle. It's Oklahoma state. A four and a half point favorite at FanDuel sports book total on the game sits at 46 and a half. This will mark the first time since 1998 where neither Texas or Oklahoma will play for the conference title, Oklahoma state looking for their first conference crown since 2011. State appears to be the best position to obviously to get into the playoff of other teams slip up around them. When you look at what Baylor has done pain, they didn't miss a beat relatively speaking without Gary bohannon over the last couple of weeks, but they had to withstand one of their sloppier efforts last weekend in Waco to just get by Texas tech to punch their ticket to this particular game. As you look at the first meeting between these teams, unlike Utah and Oregon, it didn't happen just a few weeks ago it was significantly earlier in the season. Baylor players and coaches have been pretty outspoken about how we're not the same football team, yada yada yada, when you look at Oklahoma state defensively, that was kind of their coming out party. But what's the one matchup that you're gonna have your eyes on here to see if Baylor can get revenge or if Oklahoma can rinse and repeat and put themselves in a great position at least as the one team on the outside looking into the college football playoff trying to punch their ticket. Well, let me ask you this because I think this will be a better exercise in a little more fun. Who would you say has exceeded expectation and preseason price more this season? Baylor Oklahoma. I mean, I thought Baylor was going to be in the lower third of the big 12. Oklahoma state, I thought it was going to be in that second tier, but if you had told me Baylor was going to rattle off the season that they had, I told you you're absolutely nuts. Okay. And so Oklahoma state closed minus four at home against Baylor and week 5. And then the Pope's open -6 and a half on a neutral this week. And keeping all things fair. The pokes trailed at home by 9 in the second half against Oklahoma state despite a kick-off return touchdown and again would have been down 16 if not for a drop pick 6 to a team where it's head coach had one foot out the door. And if you remove the first quarter where Oklahoma state shocks the shit out of the sooners by going with this helter skelter tempo for the first time all season and builds a lead. The Pope's probably aren't in this game. And so it becomes interesting with the price. And I think that is initially why we have seen some money come in on bailer at 6 and a half along with some cheap buys to 7, especially knowing the total was going to dip and were as low as 45 and a half right now. You also look at Oklahoma state in last week's game and I know you were, I believe on the road. But they had the advantage of Oklahoma being called for 12 penalties. Anything that was 50 50 on the last drive of the game was not being called. And I just kind of again say all that to say this. I understand completely, why Baylor is being number grabbed here? And we're down to basically 5 and a half. The problem is you dig into the matchup and it doesn't necessarily look great for Baylor. And based on what I saw from bohannon's body language on the sidelines last week and what I'm reading so far this week and tell me if I'm wrong, I think we kind of had this conversation via text. The signs would point to more Blake shape and then bohannon and I know Johann is going to practice and Miranda said bohannon is the face of the program. So maybe they stick them out there at less than a 100%. So that's basically what this handicap is. So it's either bohannon out there with a bad hamstring and is best attribute is mobility. And he was really struggling. I would say, for about two or three weeks leading up to the hamstring injury at K state, or it's a true freshman. If it's shaping, it's one thing to preserve a double digit lead against Kansas state's defense that didn't prepare for you. It's one thing to kind of sneak away with a win at home against the Texas defense that is outside the top 100 and EPA per play allowed. But I think it's kind of a different ball game here. If you're asking a three star freshman in a conference championship game, the biggest game of his life to have success against this Oklahoma state defense that now has two data points and two pieces of film on you. It's kind of a tough ask, I think, for Blake shaping. So let's monitor that quarterback. Situation for Baylor. We know Baylor wants to be run first. 60% run on the season, Smith and Edmund. Really awesome duo in my mind. It's a great tandem, especially since their styles complement each other. And we saw eben are just one of the better pass catching backs. He was out there running routes like a receiver last week against Texas tech is really fun to watch. But bailers online isn't great. And defense is scheme to stop the run first. So Baylor's outside the top 60 in rushing success rate. Baylor's O line outside the top 60 in line yards outside the top 90 and stuff right aloud. And to me, the pokes front 7 is the best part of their defense, only 27% of runs of great successful against them all season. They're also top 5 in defensive line yards opportunity rate and stuff rate themselves. So it just kind of feels like shaping or bohannon. They're going to be forced to win more than usual on passing passing down. The reason Oklahoma state won and covered in the first meeting is because of that exact thing. Baylor had a 14% success rate on passing downs. So that to me is the big match up here. If Baylor can't run, we now have bohannon who's not the most polished passer and isn't a 100% throwing the ball or we have Blake shape and who I think is a slightly better passer, but in the biggest game of his life throwing the ball. And that to me gets a little bit shaky. I think the other side is Oklahoma state. You could say Spencer Sanders has started to play the best ball towards the latter part of the season. I think he's improved under pressure. And then you've kind of opened my eyes to tame Martin. He's been damn good..

"We've seen what he means the passing game when he's out there healthy, giving Spencer Saunders a true number one. But the reality of it is when you dig in Oklahoma state and you look at Spencer Saunders, just once this season, he's completed more than 60% of his passes has a grand total of 32 completions in his last two games with a four to two or excuse me a two to four touchdown interception ratio and a QBR of less than 60 and four of his 5 starts, paint is Oklahoma state have the playmakers to hit big plays against Iowa state's defense. Or do they have to be more methodical dinking and dunking their way down the field, knowing that Iowa state has been one of the best defenses in the country when it comes to preventing the big play? I think Gundy in the offense would take whatever they can possibly get here. I am looking at this game and last week was supposed to be the week that the offense got on track. You know, you think about coming off of the buy. And you mentioned them finding an identity with their ground game. And they were getting healthier and we expected to see a wrinkle or two. And Oklahoma state was facing a defense and its weight class against Texas. Everything pointed upwards. And then we watch it unfold and boy. Not good. Oklahoma state's often scored 9 points the first three quarters against a Texas defense that we have outside the top 80 and EPA per play out. 6 of those 9 points, Oklahoma state scored, were aided by drive extending personal files by Texas. Oklahoma state opened that game with a 38% success rate in the first quarter, which is a script Mike Gundy and his staff devised for two weeks. And then the second quarter, 25% overall success rate. And then the adjustments out of the half. Led the pokes to a 20% success rate in the third quarter. We talk all the time about the scoreboard not being quite indicative of what truly transpires. I think that was the case last week. Oklahoma state's postgame win expectancy? 24% against Texas. And the guy we outlined in jaylen Warren, I think he came on strong in the second half, maybe there was some wear down factor for Texas off of the Oklahoma game and again, Oklahoma state was pretty refreshed off their buy. He appeared rested, almost 7 and a half yards of carry total EPA of 3.1 in the second half. So he did kind of help that pokes offense, find some of its identity and success in that second half. But I'm not sure they'll be able to run on Iowa state. On paper that feels like a matchup that is pretty tough sledding, Oklahoma state's offensive line, a 115th in line yards, 22% of the runs have been stuffed at or behind the line of scrimmage, which is staggering when you have a power back like Warren. A quarterback that contributes in the ground game with design runs. Iowa state also on the defensive line, not as stout as we probably projected coming into the season, but they are still top 35 in defensive line yards, EPA per rush and rushing success rate allowed. You're going to have a defensive coordinator that likes to throw some curveballs in disguise things and John heacock. I think he is going to make Spencer Sanders beat him. Last year, they loaded the box to stop chuba Hubbard, and I thought they did a pretty good job aside from a run or two, I believe there is that like 32 yard touchdown where Hubbard was just better than everybody. You know, made a ridiculous cut and broke a couple of tackles and leaked out the backside. But aside from that run, I thought Iowa state did a pretty good job. Spencer Sanders was decent in last year's game. He went 20 for 29. He had the two big mistakes, but he was competent enough through the air. Where, you know, you were able to give Hubbard some room. I think when I look at Iowa state's defense, you kind of mentioned them maybe being susceptible to the big play. I think they've done a decent job limiting the explosives, but where they've been a little bit down is their 68th in passing success rate. So they've given up some of the short and intermediate throws. And again, Sanders isn't great, but I think the best version of him is on intermediate throws. He's got a one 12 passer rating. Just to accuracy on those intermediate throws 78%. So you get him on rollouts. Do you get him off the play action? And you have them throw in that intermediate area. That's maybe where he can find some of his success through the air. I just don't see a path here where Oklahoma states doing a ton offensively. And I just kind of think the key for the cyclones defense is not just it feels like they need to be dominant here. This is a matchup if you're for real. This is an offense you should dominate. And it's not just about getting stops, right? It's not about getting Oklahoma state off the field. How about some three ounce? How about creating some turnovers? Because I think that'll play a role here. And for whatever reason and you probably know better than I do here, obviously, Oklahoma state special teams have been pretty decent, IO states just middling. But Iowa states offense right now is not starting in great field position outside the top 100 and starting field position. In a game like this, it would be massive if the defense can actually give the ball back to breeze and party in decent positions to where they don't have to go 74 75 yards, methodically every single time. And so that's what I'm looking for from Iowa state's defense is actually be dominant. It's one thing to get a stop. It's another thing to put your offense in a position to score. And I think when you look at a game like this with a total of 47 and how the styles are played, you would expect a grinder. So getting some good field position for your offense, I think goes a long way here for the cyclones. Hey, you have to try and keep that fan base involved and engage right from the opening kick-off. I mean, you look at what I was stated to defensively in their other big home game this year. I mean, they held Iowa to less than 200 yards of offense and still lost the game by double digits. So you can't beat elite level opponents if you're not strong in all three phases of the game. You get that big momentum player two and four Oklahoma state out of its comfort zone. They were pretty fortunate as we talked about to get back in the game against Texas. It's a defense more than capable of making a big play. So you have to kill the giant when they're down if Iowa state wants to stay in the conference race at this point already being saddled with one loss against the Baylor bears. Two big games broken down as eloquently as we know how to do around these parts. "I know, I know it probably won't happen, but I'll just pose this question anyway Matt. Has any team, I guess, has any team ever had a quarterback who was the preseason favorite to win the Heisman? Only you see another quarterback on the roster win the Heisman. I mean, you're serious, yeah. I am serious. I mean, he is now, I mean, he's changing the dynamics of that program where suddenly you don't say, well, I can't believe who why do you have Oklahoma, your top four? Well, you better have them in your top four right now. Have you ever seen a player with that kind of ability? Here's what makes him so remarkable. And I believe I have his biography correct. If I'm not mistaken, he sat out last year in high school because of COVID. So he doesn't play last year. He's the highest rated recruit in the country. Goes and shows up at Norman, year off from football. Hangs out as the projected number one overall pick or number first quarterback take and certainly Heisman Trophy favorite dude paints his nails, just kind of does his own thing runs into this game for Oklahoma and all of it has them the morning after thinking, wow. Could this kid get into the Heisman Trophy race? Is he gonna send span Spencer Rattler to the transfer portal? It is Oklahoma, now the team we thought they were. It's really an incredible story. It's my auto play on ESPN dot com continues to kill me. My apologies to the people. You can't, I would put them. I was feeling sour about Oklahoma. Since this kid's been there, I'd put them at number two in the country. Yeah, and people ask about the Heisman race. They're really, isn't a Heisman race right now. I mean, there are good candidates, Matt carrel, who is going to need his team to keep winning. Price young doesn't really feel like he feels like maybe a finalist, but he doesn't feel like somebody who's going to win. So, yeah, you know, you can play, you can play the defensive game. Georgia, you can go. You can go a lot of places if you want. But you probably can't go to a Robinson anymore in Texas. Now that that program has on his fault, you just can't go there. And so I think it's legitimate to talk about that. And you know, he's got big games ahead. He's got some really big games ahead with bedlam and a few others. And so yeah, I think it's a fair conversation. I'll pose this to you because I posted to Jesse and Joey on Saturday. There's a couple of teams out there that are undefeated that I'm not sure if they walked into a DMV. People would be able to beat them because we just don't know who they are. Program won. Oklahoma state. They go and come back from a double digit deficit to beat Texas. Texas blows a double digit leading consecutive games for the first time in 25 years. Mike Gundy plays defense, Spencer Sanders struggles but gets it done when they need him to. Oklahoma state 6 and O, but I don't know who they are. I don't either. And on SportsCenter Sunday morning, we saw more of my Gundy doing the dance than we did of his coaching. So give him credit. He always manages to somehow be in the spotlight. But yeah, I'm taking them more seriously today though, Matt, and so I wasn't even I didn't even realize they were undefeated until yesterday. I mean, I say that somewhat tongue in cheek because I kept seeing the roster, but I hadn't really seen anything they had done. I'm not quite putting them in the wake forest camp among the undefeated, but always camp is that. I don't know which camp you speak of with wake for us. Where are we putting that? It's just an undefeated team that I'm just really not too concerned about learning more about because about that. Yeah, look, all I've defeated aren't created equal Dave costs and great story wake for is biweek this week. But yeah, it is a different undefeated. And how many years? I mean, Gunther's been there, I think since 2005 at Oklahoma state. How many years with Gundy has it been offense, offense, offense, offense. Now they don't really have that great of an offense, but their defense is among the best in the big 12. And they have enough what it takes to kind of just hang out long enough until bedlam. Could you imagine going into bedlam both Oklahoma and Oklahoma state 11 O, which would set up then potentially a rematch in the big 12 championship. I'm just stunned that Oklahoma state just kind of hangs out kind of hanging out and it just went in football games. Well, we wasted a lot of time and I truly mean wasted a lot of time earlier the year talking about Iowa state. I'm not talking about before this season. We got taken down that road. So we tended to look past a couple of teams and they were certainly in that group. But yeah, there's the big 12 credit. They keep getting disrespected everywhere else in college sports, but they are having a very intriguing year. I mean, from pure entertainment, it's hard to find much better, especially if Texas is involved. Texas is always going to give you the entertainment, whether they're fans like or not good or bad. Week 8, I think I'm just going to hop into the big 12 week 8 for a second just to wrap them up. Oklahoma, Kansas, Caleb, certainly be able to boost his Heisman resume. Candidate Texas tech. Past Oklahoma state, Iowa state, there's one for you because you just mentioned how and love everyone was with Iowa state. Matt Campbell and that team finds a way toward the end of the year to get back into the conversation. So if Oklahoma state is who they appear to be, you got to Austin and get a win. You go to Ames and get a win. And now you really have to start taking Oklahoma state seriously, because they're going to be in the top ten when the rankings come out later on Saturday. Our Sunday. And the other version of this team that I want you to identify at the DMV because I don't know who they are. Michigan state and Mel Tucker.

"Is where Spencer Sanders has been at his best one 23 passer rating on throws of ten or more yards downfield, and that's really where you want to attack Texas a little bit. He really struggles though on the short stuff. And it's partly reading defenses. It's partly not having an ability to get the ball out on time and in rhythm. And then deliver it, I would say accurately into some of the tighter windows. So spends her son or 35 passer rating on throws in the zero to 9 yard window. That has to get cleaned up. Maybe that's what all the fundamental footwork was this bi week. A lot of his issues have also come under pressure and it's odd because obviously he's really athletic. But it seems like when he is faced with pressure, that's when the breakdown in footwork happens, but Texas doesn't really create a ton of pressure. They don't really get a ton of havoc from the front 7, just very poor pressure rates, only 12% have a great from the front 7. They're barely the longhorns inside the top 100 and PFF's pass rush grade. You would think Todd that there is some level of tinkering in some offensive adjustments made during the buy all signs point to getting a little bit healthier on this side of the ball as well. It's not a dynamic offense by any stretch. Make no mistake about that. But Gundy was kind of clear that he wants to play a controlled game. He's not looking for a shootout this week, so you would think it's more of the ground game. It's more jaylen, it's more Saunders on the ground, maybe some intermediate throws, but it doesn't feel like this is going to be something where he's looking to get into a track meet. I don't know if I want to give Gundy credit for recognizing the talent he doesn't have on the offensive side of the ball, or this being more an indictment that they couldn't pick up where they left off with some of the previous caliber skill position players that we've seen come through still water, even if it was as recent as last year with guys like Chubb Hubbard and tylen Wallace. I mean, Jalen Warren and team Martin may become those guys and you kind of talked about how Warren has gotten on track. I mean, 95 carries for 460 plus and four touchdowns against the three best teams they played and Boise can to state Baylor. Let's see if they can get him going offensively, but there's no doubt it starts and stops dispenser Sanders and some of his decision making to try and stay in a game like this. Now for as deficient as Oklahoma state has been on the offensive side of the ball defensively. I mean, this is where their bread has been buttered so far. They're allowing roughly a third of available offensive yards to their opposition. They're creating negative plays on 13% of defensive snaps. They're doing a good job, limiting big plays, but this will clearly be a step up in class against the Texas offense that's prolific in trying to get you out of your comfort zone, talk to great lengths about Steve sarkisian as a play caller, and there may not be a guy more dynamic in space, either running or catching the football than bijan Robinson, something you highlighted going into the Oklahoma game and he did not disappoint. This is appointment television for me this side of the ball. It's the only matchup of the week. That has a top ten offense going against top ten defense. And you mentioned src and bijan, I think going against Oklahoma state's defense that's getting lots and lots of love and praise. That's obviously what this is going to come down to. And we kind of saw this shift from Oklahoma state a few years ago before anyone, where I just started seeing the offense down trending and the defense starting to project a little bit better based upon a scheme shift and some of the recruiting they were doing. Some of the transfers they were getting. And I say that to say this, I don't actually think Oklahoma state's a top ten defense. And I know Connolly has the mate than SP plus and no doubt the Pope's D line has been really dominant. They're talented, they're deep, fourth and line yards. They've stuffed 24% of runs at or behind the line of scrimmage. They've done a really good job limiting explosive runs. Third best and the power 5 there. When okay, state does get you in known passing situations. They've also feasted in that scenario. Sack quarterbacks on 14% of passing down. But they played absolutely nobody. Not a soul. Not a single offense inside the top 50 inefficiency. The average rank of the four FBS opponents is 59th, and then you get Missouri state with an offense outside the top 25 inefficiency at the FCS level. And I like to look at all metrics. It paints a better picture than just kind of picking and choosing what supports your narrative or your thoughts. And for as well as the pokes defensive line is played, PFF does have them graded the third best front 7. They're 57th in EPA per Russia out. Oklahoma state has also given up some explosives over the top through the air. And that's a concern in this matchup. The best two players from Oklahoma state's defense last year, they're gone. Where Darius Williams was their top cover cornyn he was drafted. Trace Sterling the best safety is out for the year. Now it helps obviously taxes without Jordan whittington outside. So you kind of that's a blow for the longhorns offense, obviously. But I just don't think the defense is nearly as good as some of the metrics indicate. I don't think it's good as a lot of people in the public believe. And when it comes to bi gen Robinson, I think stopping him is kind of a relative thing. His bad games are everyone else's career games. And last week, we kind of saw that again. It's like Oklahoma, Oklahoma's front 7, right? They're great getting havoc. They're great stopping the run. He's just a different kind of player. And I think with sharks game planning and his play calling, you're not going to be able to completely shut B John down. And once that ground game gets going, then sar kit you with the misdirection junk throws. And that's really when Casey Thompson has been elite. And I kind of didn't come around on him quick enough and maybe there's some areas of his game that are still lacking. But when he throws with play action and rollouts off that misdirection, he's been lights out. One 31 passer rating off play action. He's been great layering in the intermediate throws one 49 passer rating in that ten to 19 yard window. And again, I try to listen to what coaches and players say and do. And you can really glean so much doing that. And I just go back to that Gundy quote, and he just said flat out like I'd prefer not to get in a shootout with them. We need to minimize the big place. It tells me he's not as confident in his defense as the rush of the world. And maybe I'm too close to the situation. We bet under 51 and a half week two against Tulsa. And the second half became a sweat. And that's a Tulsa offense 94th an EPA per play. They'd churned out a 53% success rate in the third quarter against Oklahoma state, a 50% success rate in the fourth quarter. Most of that success came through the air where the pokes have, I believe questions. To also threw up a .7 EPA per pass in the third quarter and at .95 EPA per pass in the fourth quarter. I don't see Oklahoma state's defense playing to their current form metrically unless Texas is just hung over off the loss. Now, Todd I will say this. Just looking at our core numbers and kind of removing my gut feel to this, the total's a little high. I wouldn't be stun to see this come down. We made this in the 55 and a half range. That's just me kind of blindfolded, look at the core number. Don't really go with what your gut feels Oklahoma state's defense actually is. So that's kind of the battle for me and why I haven't dabbled in the under here. You know, you mentioned the whittington injury and of course Xavier worthy goes out there and forth an effort for the ages. Second best receiving game in Texas history with 9 catches 261 yards and two touchdowns only Jordan shipley had a better game in LongHorn's history, most by.

"I wanna see what gary bohannon in baylor's offense actually looks like against a veteran pokes defense and to your point oklahoma state's been very good in the second half of these games. They've been making some adjustments. But i think metrically when you look the board. Some of these slow starts would indicate a defense. That's underachieved a little bit. Based on where we thought they would be obviously lost a crucial component to that last la in the off season at cornerback. And then it's safety. I believe is out for the year so the defense did take a step back talent wise but i think they have the ability. Make life a little bit. Difficult on gary bohannon. Who's extremely young at this point. What makes this so interesting. I have no clue what. Baylor's offense is i mean i like dave rant is hiring of jeff grimes who runs basically what all the cool kids are running offensively now right. It's it's wide zone runs scheme. It's play action off of that. Byu's offense was just like shredding teams in past years with grimes calling the shots over there. But you hit this perfect land. It's look who baylor's plate. It was texas state it was kansas. It was fcs. Texas southern. i mean. We have texas state and kansas both outside the top one hundred and twenty indefens- efficiency texas southern is one of the worst. Fcs teams in the country. I believe i saw saccharin had them power at two hundred forty nine out of a possible two hundred and fifty eight teams when you combine f. b. s. nfc teams. They were thirty. Four hundred thirty point underdogs last week and against rice. I believe so that tells you all you need to know that is right and you know when you have those three opening games against absolute. Nobody's what i saw. That allowed baylor. Grimes in bohannon to kind of remain. A little bit of a secret offensively so baylor came out and shock the shit out of iowa. State's defense right flat out. I three drives all touchdowns for baylor. Twenty one point nine point two yards per play on those three possessions. We saw bohannon using his legs. Abram smith was explosive on the ground but then almost on matt cameron cyclones. Defense made some adjustments after seeing bailers offense. They figured it out that you know nothing on tape. was actually put against the three drugs to start the season and so once. Those adjustments were made in game for matt campbell. After those three drives baylor averaged two point six yards per play on all proceeding possessions right. Only one of baylor's finally drives qualified as a productive. Drive sixty one. Total yards on the final eight drives overall for baylor and the only points. They put up the final thirty six minutes. It was a kickoff return. It was a blocked punt that led to field goal after baylor lost a yard on that possession. Baylor's offense basically played in a phone booth. Bohannon only attempted to passes of twenty plus yards all game and now that baylor stepped up in class and kinda was was forced to show their hand and put their cards on the table and basically put their actual offense on tape. It'll be interesting to see our oklahoma state handles it now. It's great win obviously against iowa state. That's struggling a little bit and probably a bit phony But there win was extremely phone. I mean i think baylor had a win. Expectancy around forty percent of that game. The epa margin definitely swung in iowa. State's favour quite a bit. I'll be candid. I don't have a horse in this race. And there's a very good chance dave aranda can make baylor you know viable program again but there are a little overrated right now feels like and you know kind of spotting this potential offensive downturn is why we've seen this total come from fifty down to forty seven because i think other professional bettors of potentially spotted that weakness for baylor as well you know. What's so interesting when you look at this. Oklahoma state team. Not only has their defense held opposing offenses in check in the second half allowing just seven points. I mentioned oklahoma. State has scored a single point pain in the second. Half of their games back to back contest. Twenty one twenty at the break against boise. They made that stand up and they took a thirty one thirteen lead into the half against kansas state last weekend and made that stand up so when you look at the pokes team that has grown synonymous over the years with high flying. Offense is. I think there's some legitimate skeptic skepticism given the fact that what spencer sanders brings to the table not oklahoma. State's credit they are getting a bit healthier. Tae martin returned last week with nine catches after having missed him. Time jalen warren starting to emerge as a viable running back but the one thing about oklahoma one hundred seventh in the country in terms of giving their quarterback time to throw. We'll see if dave rant is defense can play downhill. Make this game a little bit. More competitive explains completely while you highlighted. Why we've seen under money in this game for two teams vying to try and move from that middle of the big twelve pack to kind of get into the upper echelon should be a fun game in stillwater on saturday evening. Sec country pain showcase games this weekend and prove it type territory. Not just in athens but also in tuscaloosa. But i think athens makes a little more sense in terms of where we'll start from. Where georgia at least to the casual fan appears to be a massive favorite of an eighteen and a half nineteen point realm it fan duel sportsbook total on forty eight and a half whoo pig sui comes rolling into town emotional homecoming of sorts for sam pittman former georgia offensive line coach and pitman didn't back away from it. I mean he said hey look. The crowds going to be insane. This was a place that was home to us. We didn't leave on bad terms. I'm excited to embrace this kind of opportunity. You and i joked off air because neither one of us really spent four years at a big time college football program that it's always funny that college fans want to bitch and moan about eleven o'clock central kickoff. Just start drinking at six. am georgia. You're going to be just fine arkansas. Meanwhile has lost twelve straight against ap top two opponents. They're eight thirty one all time against those teams but you look at what they've accomplished so far this season. Four hundred for the first time since houston nutt was at the helm back.

baylor gary bohannon dave rant oklahoma bohannon jeff grimes texas kansas Baylor Abram smith iowa matt cameron dave aranda matt campbell grimes Byu

"In a bob sexpot. Nothing big, but, uh, ham sandwich on the bulldozers. Stanford at Vandy Vandy off the come from behind win over Colorado State and Stanford. The big time win over as seen now the cardinal going back on the road minus 12.5 in Nashville. Total 48 a half Tanner McKee has taken over for West Eric quarterback and they've got some playmakers, so we'll see how things all pan out there. Pete on the ground. Higgins Jones, Tremaine, pretty good receivers and good to see Stanford. Playing good box. I really thought this program was going the wrong way. They got going the right way against my SC Trojan seal seals. Therefore, Vandy the quarterback. Not bad. Raymond Davis, the workhorse. The problem for Vandy. They've got to get some pressure on the quarterback. They have yet to get a sack this year, and their mind is trying to turn over department you take on this one against Stanford minus 12.5 48 a half Thank Stanford. I think it started the wrong quarterback to start the season machine that from coaches in the past, and I think I was case with Stanford. They found their guy last week. I think I'll play with confidence. Vanderbilt Look, they beat Sarah. Think, Katie. But I wasn't impressed again. Our game by more than 100 yards. Continously messed up. Google get stopped on down inside the five yard line. So Stanford for me. Rice at Texas, and it's a rice team that looks very pedestrian against Houston. They couldn't even move the football at all. After they actually played much better game against Arkansas in the opener McCaffrey in green at both played quarterback. They both have one touchdown pass, both three interceptions. Griffin and Petri. The third actually could miss this game. He's banged up as well for the hours Texas to try and bounce back there, making the quarterback switch to Casey Thompson over Hudson Card. Your take on this one will probably work by John Robinson. Big time. And, uh, look for Whittington and the receiving corps to do something to Sark. Is he able to open it up? It's minus 26 52. I know it's still Rice will get up for the game. Texas got to be to where their heads are down, but starts got to get that program back. And with the quarterback change, maybe Texas roles in this one you take I had better, but I would if I had to play and I would lean that way. I think, Hobson but his legs gives that offensive boost. So I think they bounced back here and rice man look pathetic. That's where you against Houston, man. Yeah, I agree with you 100%, 2 Lane and old Miss Lane Kiffin's boys going to lay 14 76 the total look, Pratt Pretty good quarterback for two lane and I know they're getting a lot of attention because they nearly went into OU in the opener and beat the Sumer Sooners lost. Just 42 35. I don't know how good this two lane team is, but I know they're well coached. There's no question about that. Celestine pretty solid running back all missed, though, Matt Correll Uh, corral. He's been very solid. 6. 62 6 touchdowns, no picks. He's rushed for another touchdown. They've got parish and Ely. They've got players. Mingo. I like this on this team a lot. And I think all this could cover that number. I'll stay away because I respect to lane and I don't know it's the total hits. I would think all miss covers his game. I bet the over but that was you know, several points ago. Uh, I wouldn't. I wouldn't necessarily bet it now It's 76. You're right, Katie. I'm surprised this isn't how I was expecting that number to be 16. Many, if not 17. So if I had to play the side, it actually did pay them. Oklahoma State's at Boise State. You talked about some wind there, Hank back Meyer leading the way. Therefore Boise State they have a Lanie back Van Buren decent running backs on paper, but both those guys have struggled. Colony missed the game, but Van Buren 15 carries only 29 yards. He has hit Peter three times. They have one of the best receivers not only in the mountain West, but in the country and clear Shakir. High school already, 12 catches 2 57 and then wimpy. That guy still there that linebacker he and jail Skinner. Those guys doing a great job. 41 tackles between them for Boise straight trace forward out for the year defensive end there for Okie State. Spencer Sanders back Shane Ellingwood started The first game. I just don't know about this running game for ST Brown and Warren. They've struggled. They only have 44 carries for 102 yards. Brad, that is pathetic. For Big 12 team. Sanders may change things there, but I'm not going to touch this game. Initially, I looked at Oklahoma State. Then I looked at Boise State, so I'm just going to stay away. Where are you? Come on Oklahoma State, although it's more of a play against Boise State, and I think it's overrated from both of their performances. They shouldn't cover against Central Florida because they got massively on game 100 Yard, Pick six. Then you know that the wonders form in that game. Then last week. I mean, they had 31 points on the border. Three minutes of time of possession against you because there are plus five in turnovers, so I just I'm not buying Boise State. So that's why I played against him with the Cowboys and I do like the under 257 a half They ask you, Herm, Uh, Edwards going to go up there to Provo. And, of course, the boys in Provo stayed home after their win in the Holy War against Utah. Jaren Hall finding a way to get it done. He's strong five touchdowns, No interceptions. Algiers been solid. Powell. Pretty good receiver and P Leah tackling machine there for the Cougars. 24 tackles already. Meanwhile, they take on ASU and I like Ricky Pierce saw this guy is like a triple threat there for the Sun Devils were shot. Wait at the back field..

John Robinson Tanner McKee Casey Thompson Shane Ellingwood Tremaine Matt Correll jail Skinner Raymond Davis Griffin Katie Spencer Sanders Ricky Pierce Petri Nashville Peter 102 yards Jaren Hall Higgins Jones McCaffrey Van Buren
