"So Stephen, would I'm plane with this month I have been looking into the richest ortmann habit APPs on my iphone. Sussman a little side project I've been working on over the last week. What are some apples like? What's the? What's the habit at yet? Well, I mean I I've been doing that with paper and pen for a couple of years where every month make like a sheet and I have little checks up on it. But I'm I am realizing some of I like using the paper and pen for stuff but I think there's some things I was getting a little too precious about. digital gives me better data in tapping on my phone is just as easy as writing a check in paper except my phone is in my pocket twenty, four seven and can send me reminders. So I realized I I want to do this on there and like just in general in my life like I have like different goals and things i WanNa do and. The Way I complex some of that is through projects like I WANNA be a great at beam experts and I'm making field guides and those are projects but there are other things I wanna do that are more habit based but I still want to consistently do them like you know spend quality time with each of my daughters and things like that, and they don't really lend themselves to an Auntie focus project. So I decided I'm just going to start tracking these habits. And so I downloaded a bunch of them the one that a bunch of friends told me I need to use a streaks. And that's okay. the design is very opinionated and it just didn't really jive with me and it's also I think a limited twelve habits and the way I use. This is actually there's a Lotta stuff in here you know. I take medication twice a day I want to do that I. Know There's you know there's just a lot of things I want to track with this. Because, I'm treating it as part of my overall system. So I wanted something that could track more but also have a nice design and after looking at a bunch of them, the one I ended up with is an APP called productive. Which I know that name come on but either way that's what it's called but it's a very pretty up and it allows you to make multiple habit tracking items and you can be it's got good artwork so. If you feed the dog as a habit like innocence because I forget sometimes after the dog and then she starts biting me and I'm like, Oh, I haven't fed you but the but you have a little dog icon for that or meditation you've got a little meditation icon. So have it look nice the way you want you can have a habit where you run it once a day you can have it where you run it twice a day like in the morning and the afternoon or like there's a certain family member want to check in with every two weeks but I want that to be a habit so I, can have it say you. Know I only need to do this once every two weeks and it can structure it that way. So I can set the timing however I want, but it's still being tracked, and it's still give me one place to go to get a reminder that I still want to do that, and then for instance, with family member once I checked the box that I did I don't see it again for another two weeks and it doesn't Nag. You as much as the do APP does, but I don't really want to be nagged I just want good place that I can check in on a daily basis and make sure I'm keeping up with my habits and. After looking at them productive was the one that was the winner for me and I'm been using that one under fire now for a week, and I'm really happy with it. Yeah I agree with you about streaks Ui. It's a bit much for me. I mean it looks good but it's A. Bit Much and having something that is more flexible than that I think is great. This looks really Nice I. think that the design is nice I've just downloaded it. I've thought about this before for me I, do some daily tracking in my paper notebooks but maybe it would be nice to have some of that stuff on my iphone because again it's everywhere So does productive does it have a watch os APP yet does and I have to admit I've never installed it because I just use it on the phone okay. Is that I see that being cool right you feed the dog in the need tap tap it often your Apple Watch your set I'm going to go ahead and put on my my watch right now I'll report back but the really the thing that kind of clicked for me on this was there I'm trained to always. You know get to my best self right and there are certain things I wanna do but certain areas of my life that problem is solved by projects. As I was saying earlier like Max Sparky, there's a series of projects I'm doing to get to be the best Max bark yet can be to be the best husband I can be. There aren't a lot of projects I mean there are certain sometimes things come up you need to make a little project to do something to help my wife. But really where I win that battle is in the day to day habits. and. I just realized I need a separate place to track and do that stuff and take it more seriously and I don't know this this APP it's in my doc so that you know well, that's something. It's cool although there's no badges because I'm not crazy. You don't don't do that. This would be an option in there to track how many times you open it to clear the badges. That's no fun. It's real metaphor. What about you anything playing with man? I can't believe I'm doing this I. Don't know what you've done to me in the course of almost two years of doing this show. I'm excited. Tell me tell me. So I've spoken about in the past about having. Used head space as a meditation and mindfulness application because I unlike you David, I'm just the beginning of this journey trying to figure this out. It's been very helpful over the course of about nine months. But what I've what I've really found with with head space is that very often a don't want or need the coaching that is sort of the at the heart of a lot of the head space stuff. They have tracks in there that that don't include it. But a lot of it is around leading you through an exercise and that's great and I found it very helpful. But I'm finding that I want another tool when I just have. Three or four minutes and I just want to take that time to breathe before conference call before show..

"And our thanks to hover for their support of the Mac power users and olive relay FM? I've I've heard you talk about that before having your kids names to Maine's I've never done that I'm doing it right now. Logged into hover during the ad retail commanding them. You know it's funny. 'CAUSE I didn't. I just told them about it last month. I never really occurred to me, but one of them is in her twenties now. and. I'm think well, wait a second. Why am I paying for this? I'm I'm still paying for it. That's how it goes but the but hey, guess what? I have your name is a domain name. She's like really and it's like I don't know when your kids get older and you can do anything that impresses them. That's a win. You know. And I was lucky enough to get both of them. They got the DOT com they're ready. But I've done it. Also, I mean, this is no longer the address but just kind of empty you tip when people have babies I buy like the first two or three years and I give it to him I don't pay for it for twenty years, but the other two or three years and give it to the parents, and then you know is a little weird giving somebody an obligation, right? But they'll love it. You know they're like, oh. That's amazing and then you know they can go in and pay for it and you know they're dealing with a reputable company. But but yeah, I think it's kind of fun to give somebody their domain name as a as a birthday present. It is cool. Okay enough of that enough Let's talk about more feedback in addition to the other topics covered. We also got feedback on our service and Jonathan had a great idea. He uses RSS Devon think because you can attach RSS Feed Devon think. So why not just capture it in there it's not like a historical RSS, reader but it is Definitely a way to capture feeds An found this blog post that I'm going to put in the show notes kind of walking you through it complete with with screen shots, I think I mentioned this, but I do this for. The PODCASTS ON QUICKLY SEARCH? What things we've talked about on what shows and then I have a few things from. Five twelve pixels wordpress you can do a fee per category so like I have a collection of all of my knowledge base articles of the week because inevitably find something really cool and then find out that I linked to at three years ago. I don't want to repeat myself. As. Yeah. So it is. It is really cool to do this, and you know it just goes into your Devon think database my mind going in html documents and I can just very quickly skimmed them. It's all searchable. So if you have a website that you need to basically have all the data from, this may be a really good way of doing it. No I like I do it to on sparky and I deal with the whole firehose. I mean to the extent my website is a fire hose but the if there's anything that you do regularly. or maybe like your company has a blog and you just want to capture all of that Devon think is definitely I think one of the better solutions for archival stuff. and. Then once you do that, you feed it into the Devon. Thank you know Corpus and then it can do all of its artificial intelligence and everything else with it so. We should've mentioned that it's a cool use of. We have several listener. To one of them I. Thought was interesting from Glenn from Texas said. He'd like to hear segment about maintaining old photos whether it's gaining pictures, negatives or slides. What's the best way to get this done and not break the bank as well as what's the best way to apply Meta data like the date and location? He says I'm sure there's a lot of thousands of photos we'd like to have digitize and what have you guys done. So I can tell you when my when my mom died now about ten years ago the I took, we took a she had pictures but not as many you know as you would think because. She of the generation about two rolls of film a year us. So it wasn't crazy but we had a box of pictures maybe a thousand or so pictures and we sent them off and got them scanned I don't own a good image scanner I'm I'm big document scanners, but I don't I don't have the patience for one of those. You know high end photo scanners you gotta sit there and watch it and I wasn't GonNa do that for two thousand pictures. So we picked a service at the time that was reputable and they did a good job scanning and all those images and we got them back. And I have been slowly over the course of ten years just getting them done. I have a folder in photos called or album called growing up sparks and all those pictures are in there. And I go in there on occasion and sort some of them and tag them and date them. So I have not done at all. Yet I just do it as needed like when I need an old picture of my sister, I'll go through and handled a bunch of pictures of my sister and do the best I can in terms of Meta data and I just put years. And if I don't know the exact year I put like on the you know nineteen sixty or nineteen, sixty, five or nine, hundred, seventy like I know it's like within that five years. And it's not perfect but allows me at least to you know get to some of them. I think you've you've of hit it. This is unfortunately just a pretty manual process. Yes. There are services we ship them everything and they scan for you. Varzi Organization and tagging everything. I don't know of a better way than what you're doing, which is slowly chipping away at it. Now, there are some tricks in photos you can apply tags or location data or data to multiple photos at a time..

"Fifty, three, sparky's wrong again. Welcome to the power users. I'm David sparks joined by my fellow co-hosts Mr Stephen Hackett. How are you today Stephen? I'm good David how're you? Are Feedback Bucket overflow with we have so much feedback today does there is a lot of stuff in here GonNa talk about all sorts of fun things. But I talk about Saint Jude for a second before we get started. L. Let's do it. Let's talk about Saint Jude. Yes. So as this episode comes out, it'll be the middle of September and throughout September we have been raising money for Saint Jude. Children's Research Hospital. And you may think that that's just a maybe like a random hospital in Memphis but let me tell you it is a world renown. Childhood Cancer. Treatment and research. Facility my son at six months of age was diagnosed with a brain tumor and a Saint Jude had been in my backyard whole life I've always lived in Memphis and Kinda knew what they did and you know saw that they did these fundraisers and you see the ads but I really I. Didn't get it and in the matter of a couple of days we went from having what we thought was a healthy six month old to a baby who is going to have surgery and eventually chemotherapy at Saint Jude. And my wife and I really got a crash course in the work that Saint Jude does. So in the eleven and a half years that our son has been a patient. So Undergone Chemotherapy Kalemie dozens and dozens of memorize we've eaten hundreds if not thousands of meals on the Saint Jude campus, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational, every all of the stuff that goes into cancer treatment and saint. Judas. Never built me and they never will they believe that when you enter into this realm with his fight with childhood cancer that you should as apparent focus on your child not on the finances and let me tell you all that. That sounds incredible to hear it in like a podcast it is. Unbelievably humbling when you enter that as a parent and you realize that your child is getting the best treatment in the world and you're not gonNA pay for it there's there's one thing that that's only possible. Right because of people around the world who donate to Saint Jude to keep their doors open to keep the research and treatment moving forward. So you can go to saint jude dot org slash relay. You can donate. We know it's a hard time right now but this is an important cause and there's lots of important causes in the world I totally understand that. But this is one that's near and dear to the relay family because of our sun and is it is a real honor to get speak about St Jude every fall and to raise money for them. As this episode is released this later this week. So on Friday September, Eighteenth Mike Hurley. I will be hosting the second annual podcast the thought if you if you call it this last year, it's kind of like a telethon, right like the old telephone idea. But with our content talking about nerdy stuff with. People in the relay family and it is going to be obviously a little bit different this year because Mike and I can't be together last year we were together and got to really like hosts the show side by side this year obviously can't do that, but we're still really excited about it. We started planning for this in February. Our first meeting I first about podcast on twenty twenty. Way Back in February, and so we've been able to plan and adapt as the world has changed around us, and our goal is to put on a really. Six Hour live show that you can watch on twitter it'll be on the. Relief from Youtube. Channel later, if you missed the live stream can catch it later. But we want to continue to raise money for saint. Jude. Continue to tell people about their message because gang it is it is really important. Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of fifteen. It's not this wildly thing this impacts, lots and lots of people and it's a real honor to get to to fight back. l., let me just add as someone who has frequently donated the Saint Jude. Number one it feels amazing. I mean you you do a lot of things in your day some you're not proud of some. This is one you would be I'll tell you. It feels good. When you donate, they give you updates but they don't flood you. I mean some of these places you give a little money too and it's like, oh no, I'm going to get email every day for the rest of Saint you doesn't do that but the emails they send are interesting in there. They tell good stories about about kids going through hard times and you know it's it's it's useful. You know that the money you give is you know one hundred percent going to great cause and. And what I would challenge to do as you're sitting, there is pick a vice in your life maybe do too much starbucks or. You buy too much beer whatever you know pick a vice take the money you're going spend on that vice two weeks and just ended the Saint Jude. Just that's all in. Help yourself build a good habit and in help some people out. But either way thank you everybody I know that the Mac power users audiences always right there for Saint Jude, they have been even before Stephen was the co-host. We were there for you and I think that they will begin this year. The absolutely. It's it's really been a really fun September in the fundraising. We're GONNA, talk a little bit at the end of the show about some of the tech that I've been using because podcast thon is all remote right? We're not going to be together in that really changes how we go about it, but that'll be towards the end of the episode today. And I I will say that one thing bit of criticism I have is this challenging guys have done with these Gigli I things Oh yeah. This is terrible I think. If you're listening they're doing a thing where like whenever you hit a certain amount of money that's given. What is it in for every two hundred, fifty dollars donated. In a window of time So this ends on September fifteenth. Then we are Mike and our each putting a googly eye on something in our studio. So he started by covering his gaming pc I wanted just maximum uncomfortableness. So minor all. Just on the side of of a piece of furniture on on office to link to the threat keeping up on twitter these. All right. So am I doing nation has paid for several googly eyes and I can I opt out? Can I just say don't use Google is. A for you. Okay. Thank you. All right they are they are. Like last year when you had to put stickers on your, it was better but anyway that's it So we'll talk about your take on later and thank you all if you've already donated and you haven't pleaseconsider. So let's get to the feedback for the good old Mac power users show up heard a lot Marcos wrote in because we talked in the home kit show just last week and I waxed poetic about my system. Marcos He's not a fan he wanted are low. So he wrote in said he looked at everything ended up getting the hub and ultra cameras some art from our low. He says, they're they're really built well, home kit compatible via the hub just like you. and. They're smart about win notch, recording, illiterate and They have just released a camera slash spotlight. He intends to install over the garage now I don't know if that is going to be home get compatible I was trying to get answers on that on the web before recorded in it it was unclear from the our website ups we talked about last week has one of those, but it does not it at least at this point, it's a home kit compatible. And his are battery operated and no cabling just like you fe- you know he's a fan of our I think our lows been in this game longer frankly than up. So that is definitely solution and I'm really glad that their home compatible. It's nice that there's options right we we spoke about this with Mica. The camera stuff in particular there just weren't a lot choices. You know whom kit home keeping deal with cameras is actually a pretty. Pretty, new thing to begin with. So it's cool to see these these other companies getting in and it should make the whole ecosystem. Better right. They're going to push back on apple and WanNa make home kit better than we as consumers don't they get a better home kit, but we have options. So if you prefer one brand over the other like the aesthetics of one type of camera over the other, which is a big deal when they're around your house we have options and I'm excited about that. Some follow up on my behalf after we recorded last week. I. motivated. So I got online ordered. One of those outdoor plugs we had talked about with MICA The Amazon had the achiever one available the head to plugs on it, and that's great. I'll do that one it refuses to pair with Home Kit even though says, Home Kelly, boxy just refuses and. So..
Brett Terpstra's New Robe
"Everyone. This is David sparks. Joined by my fellow co-hosts, Mr Even Occa- Steven. How are you today I'm good David. How're you? Doing very well, we have a guest today. It's a guy you've never heard of we've never had him on the power users before. Kidding Bread Terpstra welcome to the MAC packagers. It's an honor to be here. As always you may be the most frequent guests I think we need to have a system we need like make a sweater or maybe a bathrobe for you. Logo on the five five timers club. Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. What would you be Terry cloth guy or would you want like some other fabric Terry cloth all the way. I am not a Silk Road kind of guy. I could see. I. Think. You would look pretty good in a silk robe only when I'm boxing. Maybe in, you need a type. Guys. ARE USERS Read Terpstra is one of my favorite nerds and yours he has all sorts of cool ideas and it's always fun having him on the show and I realize it's been too long. So you're here today Brett before we get started just a couple announcements sign up for the MP newsletter game. We put the the link in the show notes and then you get the show notes and a little bit of extra stuff thrown at you every Sunday. When we release. you can go over to the forums at talked backpackers dot com. and. Announce -ment. I'm doing a free keyboard Maestro Wepener I've been thinking about doing this part of these field guides for a long time. I finally got the system set up to do it. it's going to be free to everybody. You don't have to be a field guide customer and It's going to be a lot of fun. I'M GONNA talk about context base control of Mac Keyboard Maestro. I've got this really cool thing I've been doing lately based on whether I'm working on legal or Mex- sparky or whatever, and the tools I need just pop up in it makes working really fast and I'm going to share all that magic through Keyboard Maestro I'm GonNa have a special guest or to Rosemary Orchard already in and it's open to everyone free on August twenty seventh at ten am Pacific. If you're interested go to Mex- BARCA DOT COM to sign up. That was a pretty compressed little bit there. Don't you think Stephen? Yeah it was great. That was the elevator pitch like now we're on Iran or and breath waiting for us here. Yeah, and Brett is sitting right here saying, Hey, guys what the heck am under show. I'm good. You know we haven't talked to you about long time is I don't even know what hardware using these days I mean a still using that. So rocking that Atari. Se. No. I was part of a startup that went sideways. But as a result I got myself a new well new ISH sixteen fifteen. Oh, what year. No mine's a fifteen inch. I got this like a month before the sixteenth in was announced. So I still have a butterfly keyboard. That's awesome. But I use it mostly with my my ultimate hacking keyboard anyways. So. I do hate the keyboard I will say when I have to use it as a laptop I do hate the keyboard, but I do and this is an unpopular opinion but I love the touch bar. Yeah. Why I have a lot of fun with the touch bar I have it programmed so that when I'm in the shell when I cd into a directory, it checks for one of 'em. I've I have a thing called. How's it? Which is basically Make files for task runners. And so when I see the into directory figures out what tasks I have that I can run and gives me buttons for them and the Toolbar. The touch bar. And I find it just really handy. I never have to try to remember do I have this setup with Gulp or grunt or maker Rake I just have buttons that pop up for me. It's awesome. Now are you customizing touch bar with better touch tool or did you do something else? So okay. So the the customization I just described was all done through. I. Term. Which has escape code you can send to modify the touch bar, but I do also use. Better touched tool and have you seen what's it called Golden? Do. You know what I'm talking about. There's some guy did a better touch tool preset that has like every possible option for the touch bar. It was too much for me like I wanted more control. And fewer things golden chaos I think is. It's amazing. I. Mean There's No way you can look at it. Not Think it's amazing and if you haven't already customize your touch bar I I would recommend giving that a shot if you have your own customers though. It will overwrite what you have. So sure. Yeah, and it's really not that hard. If you got better touch tool, which I believe is part of set up now. So if you've got to set out subscription, you can download that one or just by the APP the also if you have a setup subscription, make sure you're running the setup version so that developer gets his due for all the Times you use his at and then if you have setup, you should also download marked to and just leave it running in the background twenty, four seven. I was only get you in trouble but. You could do that. That's all insane. But but better touch tool is an APP that you know started out and we talked about on this show often, but it started out to re map things you can do with the the the track pad, but then it's like Magic Melissa Apple, TV remote they just went crazy and and he but giving you the ability to to remapping the touch bar I think is something that for all the people that are cranky about the touch bar, my question always them have you tried customizing it to your own needs what about you even have you done yet stuff with the touch bar on your laptop? No just because it's such a secondary system for me I mean I have better touch tool doing a couple of simple things but I haven't really gone. Full bore with it if I had a this is of course had for Brett is something that you would use more if he could use it again if you had A. Touch bar for a desktop machine or you could have you know somehow with your keyboard, you normally use like do you feel? Handcuffed a little bit. It's only available to you in these circumstances. Yes. Because like I said, I'm primarily my laptops on a stand and I'm using my. Ultimate. Hacking keyboard. So when I wanNA use those cool buttons I programmed after reach over. To the touch bar and I would absolutely love to have a a touch bar An external touch bar I guess that could be closer to my keyboard although it does keep my if I sit too long my shoulders get really tight. So this constant like reaching over actually keeps my arms limits probably good for my health but yeah, I I would love an external touch bar.

"Are some are doctor was a former Air Force physician? Who specialized in. Mci Events Smash cousy and stuff like that. That's what he does and our winter doctor for this year's one of those. He's a doctors without Borders doctors so he just does disorder stuff all the time. Just weird random. Yeah he was telling us about all the time you spend Borneo or something like that while going from really really hot to really really cold that would be. Kinda cool though. Yeah he took off for one of the world's prolific animal species condensed areas to nothing. But what he did this year was he left in October. And it came back six weeks later to go the doctor. South Pole for the summer. I'm like dude. What are you doing? Wow and next week. I'm going to the Congo. What an interesting life. Yeah well that's one of the rules. You have three. You get fourteen months that you can be on continent and then you have to take off at least six weeks. Okay that's creepy. Yeah keep people from creating residents right so so you had to leave when you left your had one month left and I would have been overhead. I waited for the plane wreck. So you love because you had to leave. Well my contract was up and I really WANNA standing longer okay. mentioned homeless people like trying to skirt the rules. They're really concerned about that. They're well it's weird. A lot of people will just go travel for six weeks and come back all right. That's as good as a home as anywhere Have BEEN THERE THIRTY YEARS? Wow those take six weeks off and come back. And that's that's their life. They laid everything they own is basically an article and they just kind of travel around for six weeks and then come back. Just put it in storage up on the plane. A lot of people do that. It's it's interesting. That is super super cool. I've got a box of storage down there since I'm going back and then I don't have to carry as much stuff back with me. Look stupid boots now. When are you going September okay? So you're taking more than six weeks. Yeah I'm taking the winter off so because I've got I'm the form and there's already a winter foreman so I don't need to be there. And how many electricity do they have so this year? I had nine this winter. They're going to have four and it'll fluctuate depending on what's going on. They've had as many as twenty when they had big projects going on like right now. They're rebuilding the station so they're going to be shipping in a ton of traditions but therefore different contract or not the company. I work for So they're going to be the construction electricity that they're just going to build things and so they hire people for everything there right everything anything that you would need to run a town that people live at right completely isolated yet. We have heavy equipment operators. We have supply people. We have the Galley staff which cooks and then students which are dying. Potenza dishwashers if people have someone in the summer. They're entire job is to post office in cargo. We have people that are designated just cargo for the planes because we have so many planes come in during the summer what else. We got a food and beverage manager. That's his entire job is to manage the bars in the food that goes in and out well so we have really shitty me. All your like string 'em up. We learned quickly. We're the meal plan comes from and that's comes from the NSF. So we get the blame. The Science Foundation for Crappie meals at damn that duck. Yes that was good. Yeah there's all the traits are down there you know basically if you need it to survive your down there so probably janitorial staff and Yep power plant electricians and mechanics people run generators we even have our own mechanics on site because the generators diesel right right. So yeah you'd have to have diesel engine mechanics right. Yeah well you have power plant mechanics that are separate from the diesel mechanics. Because the power plants are very specific. Oh okay at which is different from our heavy diesel mechanics. Which are different from our light vehicle mechanics are different from our small engine mechanics so lots of mechanics time for all yeah especially for mechanics. Yes but aren't electricians just mechanics for electrons? Really re were wizards. I liked that better. We deal with a magical substance. No one really understands and make it do things the right way dude. I have no idea I mean I have a theoretical idea but I was the theory behind. Just cannot wraparound electricity. Well then it gets really weird when you start getting into alternating current the fact that the electrons really just moved back and forth and Yep current flows and. That's just weird all. I knows that somebody who use it to kill an elephant. That's that's all I got. It is possible. Yes or penguin you probably could. Yeah telling you. Man Penguin tasers one of the biggest issues. We had down. There's electrons is. There is no proper grounding down there due to the fact that is volcanic rock which is basically glass. We can't get. We can't get a good ground. So there's so much static electricity. You'll walk by like a doorknob shootout like six inches. Oh just zap you. How Super Dry Air Yup things? Yeah with with no Sawyer. Happened to me the other day. Everything shocked me I lost a computer due to that. Thank you very much two weeks. They are brought my my really nice computer. Download laptop plugged. Ethan Important Zappa. Some a pet so. I ordered a really robust one. Senate down so yeah. There aren't enough of those wrist bands called. They're supposed to keep you grounded to what if there's no real grounding right so you get grounded. Two buildings deal about it now. We actually have a special dispensation from the NSF about grounding from the National Electrical Code. Saying we don't have to follow certain grounding rules because they don't apply sits. It's physically impossible because this physics I wouldn't have any best way of dissipating. Static would be like what they do on airplanes with the hope the win pulls it away. I mean that's that's really about it. We have. We have we grounds in the buildings and stuff like that. Keep to minimize it. But there's only so much we can do. Yeah Oh weird what would you say as far as like just normal? Living Life is the most disruptive. They're having a roommate Most people wants to get college. Never have a roommate again like when you have to actually share a bedroom with yeah no you don't live with somebody unless you're fucking them. That's my root down there. You have a roommate. Who shares a room with you that you both sleep in bunk mates? Yeah and in some cases you have three other roommates. Oh it's one of those like four bullets. A central live area or is no just four banks. Crackheads forbids and wardrobe for each person in a What size it has like fifteen fifteen bucks but you've got plenty of other spaces to go to get away from those people usually entire like continent basically you never make it to the continents but there's a whole lot of the white. Yeah there's hiking and you can go to the bars you can go to the library. You can just go walk around town Cool stuff beautiful thing. Is you work six nine. So you're only in your room basically to sleep most of the time Does not horrible. In Sunday's.

"Talked about it at when get bright put in at work is not hot enough to melt the ice off the glass. Okay Yup see I dealt with switching to. Led's in a plasma freezer so minus forty degrees wind chill probably closer to minus sixty. You had wind chill in freezer. Yeah Oh the fan. The fans are blowing a lot of wind. Chill ridiculous airflow but took him. We switched to led's because the incandescent lasted two weeks and the work. We're getting harder to find the quality ones For essence never got warm enough to actually really even turn on right and led's from the research. I was doing with last two years because compared to twenty years at a normal outside temperatures because of the At the lower temperature they burn brighter right and they burn out but if they don't even melt the ice and you have ice building then in. Yeah that doesn't work are strobe lights. You know the the line help them lineup. Were Five Thousand. Volt halogens those things bright and they're hot. Yeah that would melt the ice. What was your favorite food? That's a hard one Talk about food. Then you are boring. The shit cold temperature illumination on my God. So food was actually halfway. Decent down there Galley food basically cafeteria style. The staff down there worked really hard to make food taste. Good with the crap they're.

"The South Pole? I did not now. You're you're pretty much just base personnel right. Yep and after hearing the stories of people from poll. I don't think I WANNA go. Oh really got off a cold. There are well. Yeah but you're already like so freaking cold. How does get the average temperature in the summer? There is in the summer is like native twenty-five negative thirty okay and then in the winter you can hit native sixteen nine negative seventy. That sucks right. You're where you're at is basically sea level Yup and seven hundred miles north of the South Pole whereas the South Pole station is like eight thousand feet above sea level literally on the poll that Oh wow I didn't realize it was that high on two miles of ice. That's awesome so more like ten thousand feet. Yeah Oh that's like nine ninety seven hundred feet something like that noise. Wow that'd be frigging that'd be cold in a temperate region. Yeah wow what's interesting is at the South Pole. Hardly get any real wind because of the way that the Polar weather works. The wind comes down at the poll from the atmosphere right so brings cold air. But it's moving very fast. It's only when it passes the Transit Antarctic granges when it picks up speed. Oh as it's going across the plateaus it picks up speed interesting. Yeah so we'd have fifty sixty wins in the polls got like seven. I hate you guys. You know. But they're still colder fifty sixty knot winds so we're talking like hurricane force. You know because not a big deal. Fifty knots really liking it. It's pretty windy out right. And what was your job like? They're so I'm electricity. There and our job was to make sure that things didn't break got fixed when they broke our.

Lebron didn't assume Lebron just bend over backwards to make sure. "Just again. I'll have to rely on the beat writers to tell me so I did watch the today show early this morning where they said it was actually below zero and Chicago right now. What is the forecast now and for the evening? How cold will it be? It's it's terrible it's terrible and I'm GonNa tell you that the Toronto All Star game which one is I think. Four years ago or so That's the legendary rub recent years the coldest all star weekend. And I'm telling you Tony. The Toronto market has not recovered from that with the players in the league. When the when all those all stars came to Toronto all they think about is how miserable that weekend was even though it was a cold snap even cold for Toronto and even though that for you know eight months out of the year. It's pretty good there. And there's four four months where. It's absolutely spectacular. I still hear players complain about Toronto. Chicago will suffer a scar because of this. I'm not sure the bowl's where free agent destination. Anyway they've not hit with the hit free agents anyway but it was so miserable last night that people. I was talking about Uber driver. People were not walking four blocks and and it was not even the coldest it's going to be yet and the other thing is this is important about Chicago. The Chicago River of course goes right down the middle of the city. Many Times you have to cross over the river. This is what I can tell you from coming here for twenty years you cannot cross. You cannot walk over the bridge when the weather is like this. It's not that far. It's only maybe fifty yards but the wind comes out the lake and because of the skyscrapers goes down that that river. And you may be a one-sided riverine say well it's not that bad but when you go across that river it's like the Arctic and so we're GONNA have people go down thinking that they're gonNa Cross that river in the next twenty four hours. I feel I feel for them already. We'll bond intends to be carried across the river by the way currently sunny and one degree Fahrenheit in Chicago. Really 'cause I guess we'll dinner won't be outside and he loves to eat outside to remember when he forced us into eating outside which was actually quite nice. "Tremendous music. You can hear it in its entirety at the end of the show D. N. A. Place in Brian. Windhorst who I love. Who'S IN CHICAGO? And we'll get to a lot of all star questions and basketball questions but the most important question is tonight. When wilpon coaches his dopey celebrity team for which he has held no practices at all he has no place. He doesn't have any idea what he's doing will you heckle him will you get close enough to heckle him? And do you think his team will beat Stephen as team. And what is the line by the way? Let me be very clear about this Tony. I have absolutely no intention of going to that game. What do you think go ahead? I will have to depend on the coverage of all the beat writers. Who helped me understand? I've told well beyond that. He should get teed up twice thrown out of the game and led his twelve year. Old Son Coach the team since the twelve year old son is familiar with all the personnel and will no idea none zero. That's the best part of it is that I mean when I saw the team came out. I didn't know who these people were and I don't know slightly younger than Wilpon so Hopefully we'll have good fun. The thing about it is that you've got steven down there. I mean How could he possibly compare? The the energy outlaid Steven A. Is is building up to. How could he even compete with him on? What's going on in this game I I? I think it's a bad situation. He's been putting yeah. I mean I'm Steven was a college basketball player. You know I mean. He was not a great player but he played And he's GonNa WanNa win. He's GonNa WanNa win. He probably has an idea of what to do. And we'll on what his goal is to get to a good restaurant afterwards. That's what he wants to do. There is a wilpon dinner tonight. I have not drawn. Invite of my Some of my colleagues draw invites I. I have not made the list and I can only imagine in Chicago on all star weekend. What sort of celebrity row is going to come to pay homage to will bond and his hometown? I'll just again. I'll have to rely on the beat writers to tell me so I did watch the today show early this morning where they said it was actually below zero and Chicago.

"What baseball player do you know that hits a walk-off run to get his team in the world series? God chatted yes and goes around the base clutching his chest instead of totally Cadillac with his hands. On let me just answer your question as far as what? What else do I want them to do? First of all. I'm not the aggrieved party. I don't want to do anything I don't care but but you don't have to force me to accept or believe in their apology I I would have. I would have been more satisfied if I had heard more is and less. We's I wish I had. I could have or God forbid someone have. We'll earlier I said I I should have done more. I'm talking about the guys. Yes you know. Ask the the guys Lagman too. I mean someone well. That's stuff was so everyone could have gotten on the couch and said tonight shows Point Arabia's Carlos Correa I wish I had had the courage to get up there and say this is an excuse the that would be so difficult and it's called House. I wish I had been man enough to stand up and say you know this isn't right but you know what I I couldn't I wouldn't. It wasn't working. I mean if someone had done something like that Carlos Correa came close to that but he also said. Don't blame the soil on Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran Right. They weren't that important. I'm we could've done we as a team collectively could've done more. Grain specifically was to deny the impact or values. What you should have done if you Jim Craig and I. I think Jean will agree with this. You Get up there and you say what you know. We think we won the championship. And and you know we. We think we were the best team. We think we're the best team but from now on anybody for Major League Baseball wants to come in. Our dugout can do that anytime they want any time they want. That's what should because then you're saying you know we're not cheating again and they will of course but so. I'm just I understand why other players say what they say but I would sit down. That's not so. Just tell me what you want them to do at this point and if you say give back the championship I come rights with come on now. I agree championship but I think there are steps. In between that in terms of suspensions finds I mean like they agreed Major League Baseball in order to get anybody to cooperate at all offered immunity to all the players. And then when you say suspensions they suspended two people who were directly responsible the general manager and the manager and the owner fired them now. We'll say this. We had jeff passing on yesterday. He killed Jim created. Wow I mean even I mean if you saw me if I was not on camera he was on camera. We're going WHOA Tony. What back in his chair and it was his own reporting. He wasn't using someone else's reporting says it was his he got it. He was really good so he had written a story a couple of years ago. Now he's really bad hinted at this cheating but there are two things at work here. There there is. There is a contingent like to your point. Like what else do you want them to? That's all I mean. And and that is a fair question. But that's that's different than saying. That was a lame apology particularly crane. Which is fair is fair. I'm talking about the players to the players. Could this is a position that other players can have where they can criticize these people? You can in the moment but players seem to be ultimately for doolittle's appoint granted their teammates but they're ultimately going to be forgiving place. 'cause they know what they would do fragment ends up on your team around his Chapman. You'll be happy. You're not get out of here. Cheater third for us and you know hit forty home runs. I mean Nelson Cruz aims. He got back and everybody he Nelson's back to pitch for the central Missouri. Mules baseball team is calm and US. What what what do you want from this? I want the Astros all the players to pool their money together. Reopen Chatter in funded for a period of no less than fifty years. There are some people who want the a world series shares to be given. I thought well I thought not about the share specifically but I thought this is something crane could have done said. Look I'm going to take money out of my own pocket aunt because of this. I'm going to give it two boys girls already baseball. Little League. I'm GONNA let everybody flurry. Of course this is Torii. Things should speak to this better than I. Jim Crane. Ken believe if he wants to that. It didn't impact the game. You cannot say that I'll say it I mean I I don't know how the hand Sabres we get out of here We'll switch gears. Utterly Brian Windhorst will come on the shelf from Chicago and talk about the NBA. A little bit. I'm.

"I'm so happy though that that you have that picture guide to say something. I was criticized for people. Assuming I didn't WanNa wait online. That's not the point. My anger was that the line assumed. I didn't see that it was there. I've been online's before that I just wanted to close that online personal lines. Michael Kornheiser's here. Jim McManus here. Gary Braun is here. Nigel will produce the show. Run the board. Do the news let him we will. We will open with the lead story in all of sports right now which is the astros performance yesterday. The owner the new manager two of the players publicly and then and then in the locker room players talk. Nobody said I'm not GonNa talk and this is exactly how you do it. You say to yourself do with this one time. I'm not going to do it the rest of the year and unless I feel like it but I'm going to do with this one time and get it behind me and try to move on. This makes all the sense in the world. This is how companies run this is how military forces Iran. This is how this show is wrong. Come on I mean. Let's let's not think that this was invented yesterday. This is David Gore of dealing with the problem. This is how you doing It is a bigger deal in some cities than in others. It is a bigger deal in the cities like Los Angeles or New York where the Astros beat those teams in playoff circumstances. And you don't know if they cheated there or not it's a bigger deal in Washington because the nationals suspected the astros of cheating last year and beat them in the World Service. It's a bigger deal here and it leads to great amounts of moral superiority by people who are writing and talking about this and you cannot get away from that and I would caution all of those people in that position who say we would never do this and they have to die that maybe we would do this if we had the opportunity. But you WANNA ride the white horse for Awhile to somebody knocks you off it. Go ahead ride the white horse. The Astros apologize yesterday. Nobody seems to think it's enough air quotes. Nobody seems to think well. Okay you want to do it. Sorry yeah nobody seems to think it's enough all around baseball. People are screaming and it's not enough. Much of the criticism is focused rightly so on. Jim Crane the owner. Because Jim Crane actually said the cheating didn't impact the game. I mean come on if the cheating didn't impact the game while while you're cheating you know what are you doing it? Is You cheating to impact the game? Now Jim Crane was himself a pitcher when he was a kid. I think you may have played in the low minors. I'm not exactly sure. But he was pitcher and what. I think to give him his best run at this. What I think he's saying is a great pitcher can get you out with you. Know what's coming or not? He did not say that specifically. But I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on that just on that particular thing but to sit there and say it didn't and we don't think impacted the game is stupid. It's stupid you shouldn't say it. You look really bad. You are allowed to say we had a great team. You're allowed to say we don't want to give back the championship. You want to say that but say it didn't impact the game is dumb and then when somebody says are you saying it didn't impact the game he goes. I didn't say that ninety seconds ago. It's actually there and people can see it so he says the players shouldn't be punished and look. You may think the players should be punished. That's fair but baseball did not take away the championships of teams populated by many people who use steroids. Who Cheated the game? Who cheated the rule so I don't know that baseball can take this away? You can do it a wants. But if I'm on the Astros would I'm going to say is also it's okay. This is the Pete. Rose argument basically just not a bad argument coming from Pete rose. It's not a good argument but it's not a bit theoretical argument. This is what they cheated. What did you do Alex? Rodriguez cheated was on a championship team. Right Barry Bonds cheated didn't make the championships. I don't think but one a whole lot of games. Knock some teams out. Roger Clements cheated one championship. So so back off sparky on this one back-off so nothing nothing is enough altuve. Eight and Carlos Correa especially at Alex. Bregman they apologized they apologized. They said we shouldn't have done this. We did it. We shouldn't have done it. What more do you want? What do you want you want these? Want these players. Taft to pitch lefty. If they're righties you want the batter to have to hit. Just tell me if this isn't enough what do you want now? I am not crazy about when people like Justin verlander who I like a lot. Justin Berlanda railed last year about how the baseball was juiced about how this was unfair. But how baseball should step in on this. That baseball allowed this to happen. And then he said. I wish I had done more. Don't tell me what you've done more. That's really weird that's Aj hinch said don't you know you? You don't wish you had done more. You wish you hadn't been caught. Let's do this. The team continued to do this. And now all of a sudden they're having an attack of conscience but again what what do you want? What do you want to happen? And I'm struck by this we'll Harris. Who's on that team? So Reliever of consequence is now on the Nats Sean doolittle who fashions himself Mitterrand. You know and thinks he's smarter than everybody in the world. Sean doolittle the vague philosopher of sports. Sean doolittle says of this particular guy. Where's this thing here? Oh I missed it. Somebody talk while I'm talking. She wanted a little forgives will house. Because I've talked to we'll Harris Laos good guy we're okay with will Harris well. The cases that will Harris did not benefit from the garage from the garbage bank. We'll need the Justin verlander except for the fact that when you're itching and your hitters get five runs to win okay so says we'll Harris says I think we all share in that no doubt To see where it's gotten to there's a lot of guys wishing he could have maybe done something to change history but same time a lot of necessarily know what those things are. It's hard to quantify your head. What maybe you could have done. That's not hard which could have done said which eating here. I'm not going to be a part of it. Nobody did that 'til they left the squad. Okay but that's that's the question of social dynamics about being up standard versus being a bystander and we'll Harris's an interesting point in this because by being a prominent reliever he has more sort of leverage than just sort of normal bench player or someone in the field. Ver- lander is the tipping point here. Because you WANNA say you're one of the only three or four guys on that team who can say some? That's right your big guy. And you're winning the pennant and the world series and you were the last to get to that world series. So here's Sean doolittle boy. I appreciate his apology. Talking about we'll Harris talked with him a little bit so far in the spring about it and I feel like his remorse genuine. I think he's excited to be here to have a fresh start. Give me a break. He's your teammate. Now so you're going to hang him you're not gonNA put his back against the wall. You're of course going to accept his apology because you got to play with him now so so what I'm getting at. Essentially is that while everybody stands on their horse and criticizes everybody else. They offered no specifics as to what should happen. And when you become their teammate. The first thing they want to do is put it behind. My Role told me where I'm wrong. You'RE NOT WRONG. I I think you're hitting Sean doolittle too hard with the Hammer. He's talking he's not. He's not the cheat. Okay that's right. He's not the cheat I maybe I think was missing. Yesterday is from. The owner. Was some proactive. Scans that says I'M GONNA be in that clubhouse more. I'm going to meet with the manager every week. I'm going to go over this. I'm going to go over that. There was not that at all the other thing I know especially the key players like Bregman stood up there and apologize and then they went in the clubhouse kind of and then they went into the clubhouse they said the exact same scripted thing. I get all that and win. Some body quote apologizes. There's two things I look for. I look for the preposition if if if I did something and I look for the passive voice and here's what Bregman said. I feel I feel bad about choices that were made com onslaught. Mistakes were made oldest. Excuse in the book. I'm not saying that. Their contrition sincere. It's forced upon them. I understand that I'm just saying what do you want now? Well I agree. I don't think you can take away the championship. That means that's just goes into chaos but I think those guys are going to have a very very long twenty twenty seats not only that but when their contracts are up they're going to other teams? They're going to try and outrun this thing. Any which way that they kasmin. I understand dusty. Baker is a great choice for them because he is relentlessly positive dusty Baker when Sammy Sosas bats exploded and all the cork when all over the infield dusty Baker actually said after the game. You GotTa show me the evidence. The evidence is on second base so he is a player's Guy Dusty Baker and I wonder I wonder about the involvement of dusty Baker and getting those guys front center yesterday. Because you know you had to do something before the full team re report. But I'm totally with gene on this one. This this is straight out of a Torie Clarke crisis management handbook with the passive voice and really. It's we're as you said earlier. We're sorry that we got caught. And we're sorry for the fans have gone through which I think is a key ingredient here for what that world series meant for that fan base at the end of twenty seventy flooding and all the hurricanes and all of that. How can I go back to for one for one moment? You're completely missing the story and do little where you get a great quote as to. What is the telephone effective baseball? Any any sort of think about the tentacles at go out from one move and he goes back to that season where he is part of a two person trade that comes to the nasty obviously fell short in the previous seasons for US getting to the world series but then look and say what could have been and think about all the players again. It's small you don't know we. Everyone has a sample size. But what could have happened if say he doesn't come to Washington or if he was in Oakland for another couple of weeks and got banged around even more. I'm too hard on Sean. Doolittle I guess yes you are but I did watching. I think this. I think we don't know the whole story. I have watched that too of a home. Run Fifty Times closer. What.
iCloud Family Sharing
"Today we're getting into. I cloud family sharing and this is is one of those topics that for longtime people had a lot of horror stories. This was kind of rough in the beginning. It launched way back in twenty fourteen but honestly it's come along way and I'm using it a lot of people we know we're using it and so we thought it'd be a good time to look at this feature cloud and kind of explain what it does how you get signed up for it. And maybe some of the pros and cons of moving into this new world. Yeah I was definitely the Canary in the coal mine. When this first came out I remember it was terrible title? It was it was horrible. I wrote some post about all the trouble I had and I think Dr Drinks said Sparky is unhappy. Then it must. It's really bad or something. Yeah eventually apple contacted me and They they. They took a look at our log and they kinda help sort. Some things is out but yeah it was rough at the beginning but this is something that we've really needed. I mean we've got. These cloud accounts has become increasingly. A part of our world and for those of us with families families There's a lot of of good to be had with a family. I cloud account. I gave it such a bad rap at the beginning. We kind of stayed away from it on the the show for a while. But then it's it's much better and it's something I could absolutely recommend now we we've been using happily for years and I know you have to. Yeah we signed up. Maybe two and a half years ago three years ago and it was pretty seamless. And we're GONNA walk through that process but before we get into. It family sharing a what it can offer. I think I think it's important. Talk about sort of the old way of of sharing purchases because that's really the heart of family sharing for most people. Is that if I buy. I NAP my significant other can can use it on on their phone and for a long time you could do that in sort of a a shady way and in my wife and I did this for years where we shared an apple. Id just for purchases. And then we were signed into our devices is with their own personal cloud account so we were not sharing contacts and calendars but we were sharing purchases because irs Mac os allow you still to be signed into different accounts for cloud and the APP store and the music store and all that stuff and they are still separate law against to this day. I think a lot of people did this again. It's it's a little sketchy it's not quite the way it's supposed to work but a lot of people did a lot of people may still be in that world now and there is a way forward from that into family sharing. And that's that's what my family did Y- I you know I question your your term sketchy though because I feel like that was kind kind of the only way to do it back then. You know this really started in the context of music because I mean this goes back to the the ipod really really. I mean when you had the the I tunes account on your Mac and if you bought an album. He went to the store and bought a physical album. Of of course you would everybody in your family would be able to use it. I don't think they ever intended for yet two by four copies of the album. Or maybe they did. I don't know if they did. That wasn't very fair a so so we all did that. And and that we're going to call that the legacy count throughout the show today and that still has has in some respects a dark cloud over this whole system and continues to be a thorn in my side too but it also kind of makes sense sense from where it grew but eventually apple did try to put go these cloud family sharing and the people who are able to start with that have the best world world right now in Minneapolis to the ability to easily share and everybody have their own accounts but but they do still accommodate those That's one of the reason why I don't think it's that sketchy I think they kind of understand. Yeah that's what happens and they've tried to build it into the system. The I'm getting the sense that it seems like that wasn't the initial desire. Like I think to be more fair. I would have bought nap and my wife would about the APP to write from a developer perspective. Bailey it's it's a little weird because as we're talking about family sharing developers can opt Out of so You know I don't think it's like the worst thing in the world to do this again. We did it for a long. I mean for a long time and lots of people do it just now. We have a better system system that is more designed to support this sort of sharing of purchases between family members. And I also think that Obviously the types of media media that have been purchased through. These ideas changed over the years. You know for music to two movies in and video media and applications nations and books and so because the the objects you purchase have changed. The model doesn't always fit exactly as I think it was originally intended it. It's really kind of a hairiness about too much but we're going to try and make sense of it today and help you get your cloud family Account and set up and figure out how to get the most out of it

"Also, I changed the names to be common dog names for the past two years. I was pretty good friends with sparky, we had shared interests and enjoy going places together. And we're pretty close at the time she pleases, a lot of importance on marks or grades which I definitely understand, but she can be quite unkind about it. She says things like, oh, I only got a ninety six I did so bad around people that she knows must have gotten lower marks than her, like me, and my other friends, I remember feeling uncomfortable when describing my favorite books with her before, because I thought she would be dismissive and condescending about them this year sparking got into a passive aggressive fight with another of my close friends spot because spot was sick of her attitude in school. Sparky says things like oh, you should have taken the French course, even spots doing well and it and I also heard from spot. That's. Sparky said I stay up till three AM studying implying that spot didn't deserve the grades. She was getting because she studied less than her root rude. There's also a parental aspect to this from what I heard from sparky. Her parents are very strict about school. This has evolved into her making really judgmental remarks about my other friends so much so that I think she's intentionally trying to hurt people and bring them down spot believes that sparky who's Spar. He's the original friend were talking about. So everybody's following this needs to bring down other people because she's incredibly insecure about herself. She also began saying, latently untrue things such as I'm a bad lab partner. And she said she might do a lab again next year if she had a better partner ru Volcan rude. She clearly is not fine. And I'm fairly sure she's not mentally healthy, we're no longer close. But I make sure to be civil with her. When I see her in the halls. Even though that's the extent of a relationship nowadays. But she's hurting a lot of my friends still. I'm not sure if there's anything I can or even should do. And I'm really stuck about this any advice would be very helpful. Okay. So turn and are you going to start off with some compliments? Yes, you gave us your age. You mentioned that you were a teenager, and you gave us specifically the age, and I am we are both so impressed with how you are thinking through this, and specifically the last paragraph where you said she clearly is not fine. And I'm fairly sure that she's not mentally healthy, or, and you also mentioned her parents, which is like the root of everyone's problem, their parents, great job, thinking, deeply about this and trying to be pathetic toward a person who's not who's being very unkind. Oh man. I agree. You are like you sound like you're, you're more mature than like most actual adults. I know. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. This was happening to me. It'd be like she's me. I tell everyone had been Shia. We're doing great like you're doing very good this, this question has. A lot of empathy and it, and we really, really respect that you also said, I make sure to be civil toward her amazing. I think that's a very good move, because even though it probably costs you a little bit, mentally, and it probably causes you a little bit of frustration. You're doing something no one ever does, which is taking the high road. Absolutely. And I think that you're also doing a second bit if this that is absolutely perfect. Which is you have disengaged from sparky. The bad friend. Yes. Good job. I understand that. He's still hurting your other friends like spot and rusty. And Rex.
