"The death toll in Kentucky is rising after heavy rains yesterday caused flash flooding and mudslides in parts of the state. Governor Andy beshear says, at least 15 people have now died there. This event is devastating and I do believe it will end up being one of the most significant deadly floods that we have had in Kentucky and at least a very long time. Bashir says property damage has been massive with hundreds of people losing their homes. There's also been flash flooding in southwest Virginia, governor Glenn youngkin has declared a state of emergency to help with response and recovery efforts there. "Is WTO news. 9 52 Amtrak is expanding service from part of Virginia this week a third daily northeast regional departure from Norfolk starting on Monday, a second daily round trip to and from Newport News is also being restored. There will also be 5 total daily Amtrak runs at the Hampton roads regional service, Roanoke will also get a second northeast regional departure starting Monday, connecting southwest Virginia with addiction's capital and the northeast corridor. It still taking a while for riders to hop back on the MTA buses and subway in Maryland like they did before the pandemic. The daily record reports a decline in ridership can be seen all across the agency services in February of 2020 more than 5 million people rode the bus. This past February, the numbers did not reach 3 million, only about a 120,000 people rode the Baltimore subway this past February. That was compared to 612,000 in February of 2020. 9 53, a trend that's been favorable for workers. That's what the unemployment rate is showing. The current unemployment rate is about 3.6%. Which is well below historic averages. Professor Christopher kayes teaches management at George Washington University. He says companies are hiring at a pretty fast pace, but about 46 million people quit their jobs over the last year, an unprecedented rate. The reasons, pay, family obligations, and work life balance. So they're really looking for places of work where they can fulfill their purpose, where they can have work that's meaningful, where they're treated well by their bosses. And there aren't as many people looking for work, all these factors contribute to what he calls the great resignation and he expects it to continue. Employees really have the power to drive the job market. Melissa, how will WTO news? Well, you might want to check out the senior citizens in your life, something called a grandparent scam is happening in Montgomery county. What police say happened is this. In at least three incidents in late May and early June, seniors were contacted by a scammer, claiming to be either a grandchild or a child. They're in jail and they need money to get out. After withdrawing the money, the victims then called a number, they were instructed to call, and were told a courier or bondsman would be coming to collect the money, a short time later, a man showed up at each of their homes, took the money and left, detectives think there are more victims out there. The suspect who posed as the career, he's described as tall heavy, wearing a brown UPS type uniform and reflective vest in one of the cases he drove away in a dark colored four door car. "Another campaign. Here we go lock and load O three 31 look a thousand rounds and I ain't bringing back one. As you know, I was born and raised in D.C.. Southeast, one of the things that I used to do or I felt very fortunate to have done was my grandfather had a farm down in the southwest Virginia about 20 miles south of appomattox Virginia. A little town called red House. Nothing out there in middle of nowhere. I'm close to, I'm close to appomattox. I'm your fredricksburg. Oh yeah yeah, okay. But I don't even know where red House is. Yeah, nobody else does either. And so I would go down there in the summers and work on the tobacco fields with my grandfather. I hated it at the time, you know, I'm a city guy, you know, I don't want to get up at 5 30 in the morning working tobacco fields, but it ended up being a really great experience for me in hindsight. So one summer in particular though, I went down and my cousin who always used to join me there. Who was my same age. He was up in Philadelphia with his mother, so he wouldn't join me for another two weeks. So it's just my grandfather and I. And our routine was every morning at feed the hogs, and I have several things to do. Then we jump on a tractor, he a little platform on the back I would jump on. We ride out to one of his military tobacco fields, worked back until he got too hot and then we'd come in. This particular day, he said, we're not going on tractor. We went to his barn, he backed out this huge formed horse. Hooked up a platform to it, put a plow on the platform, I got sit down on the back of the platform, and we off we went with the behind the horse to a field. So we get out there and I've never seen anything like this come from southeast D.C.. So he hooked up this horse to the plow. He got behind the plow, so I applaud these perfectly straight rows. And again, I'm just fascinated by all this. Yeah. And so about halfway through and I'm just sitting on the ground playing the dirt watching him. So because I'm 9 ten, 11 years old. So about halfway through, he decided to go take a potty break in the Woods. And I'm sitting there watching that horse, watching that plow, thinking, man, how can that be? And so I thought to myself, I'm going to impress my grandfather. I'm going to get behind this plow and I'm going to continue working. Save me some work. Yeah, right. So I walk up to this plow. The plow is bigger than I am. I managed to pull it up, upright. And I don't know how much you know about horses and plows. But anyway, it's all connected through something called a single tree and all that. But I get the reins behind me, and I knew the command to make the horse go forward. So the horse I gave the command to horse starts walking. The problem is the horse is cutting diagonally across my grandfather's perfectly plowed groves. And let me pause here for a second. And I don't advocate this at all. So I want to be clear. I don't advocate this, but clearly that back in those days, you could whip your kids. And not only could you whip your kids, but on a farm, nobody would know anyway. And if they knew they would encourage it. So I'm thinking, oh my God, and he'd never done that to me before, but I'm thinking, oh, because he's going to really be mad 'cause I'm ruining a day of half day work for him. Yeah. And about halfway through messing up his rose, I think to myself, I knew the command to make the horse go forward. I don't know the command I had to make the horse stop. That was gonna be my next I know you said it that way for a reason. Exactly. So I'm scared, and I'm running to keep up with this horse. And my grandfather runs out of the world to the yells out. He says Larry, what are you doing? And picture this. I'm barely keeping up. I turn around to see my grandfather in kind of going sideways and I stumble in almost fall. And when I catch myself, I instinctively say, wow, wow, and of course the horse stopped. I didn't know that. So now I'm standing there, my grandfather storming across the field and I'm thinking, okay, this is not going to go well. And so my grandfather came up to me and he said, well, and this wasn't very articulate. You know, and it wasn't the way I would have stated it, but he said, well, he said, it's okay to try and fail. But it's not okay not to try. And so what he was saying to me was, look, I'm proud of you for trying. And by the way, your entire life is going to be just like you and I out here on this field plowing this horse. You're going to have opportunities and you're not going to know exactly how to do it. And you're going to be scared and people are going to tell you, you can't do it. Go try anyway. And by the way, if you fail, get up and try it again. And that's something that stuck with me, my entire life, that, you know, imagine a ten year old boy in the middle of nowhere. Walking behind a horse that I couldn't figure out how to maneuver. To get a lesson like that that has gotten my entire life, which is really something amazing for me. Grandpa's are the best..

GOP Voters See Youngkin as Chance to Reverse Party Course

"Morning. Good morning, mister young, and good to have you back. Good morning, you. How are you? Good. Your voice, I went down with the fetching misses Hewitt to listen to you on Saturday morning. We were surprised that there are a thousand Republicans and old town period. They all showed up, but I heard your voice and my wife turned to me, said I've heard your voice that way. You've been talking too much. So I gather, you've got crowds everywhere you're going according to The New York Times. Cue the crowds have been huge everywhere we're going. And yes, we've done 50 events in the last ten days. Wow. And I'm not going through adolescence again. But we're working every day to keep everything together. Yeah, Glenn young and if you're finishing with thousands of people at every rally according to The New York Times and poor old Terry mcauliffe, can't get ten people in a room. What's that tell you about this race? Well, we got huge momentum. It's really fun to see everybody come together across Virginia. And here what's been most amazing is it's Republicans, it's Democrats, it's independence. It's folks from all walks of life. I mean, the polls show it, we're winning. We're winning independents by double digits every event we have. I have people streaming in saying glad we're Democrats. We've never voted for a Republican before. We're voting for you. We've been in the Latino vote. We've been endorsed by organizations that have never endorsed Republicans before the Hampton roads black caucus. It is so great to see unity. It's so great to see everybody coming together and the momentum is huge. And you're right, that event announced that Andrea was something else. I thought there'd be 25 or 50 people. We had to code it on. And there were so many people. I thought I was going to say hi to you. Not a chance. There was a CF people and people. This is like the middle of New York City in Virginia. You can't you can't expect the Republican to barnstorm in Alexandria two days before an election. But Glenn young did. Yeah, and we're done. We just finished a big swing through southwest Virginia the crowds were huge. There's a red sign everywhere. It is really, really fun to watch this happen. You know, you it's no longer a campaign. It's a movement. It's a movement being led by parents. It's a movement being led by virginians and on this ballot on one side of it is Terry mcauliffe and his big government control and his desire to have parents separated from their children by government and on the other side as Virginia. In my name, but it's virginians and it is so so awesome to watch this

"The mason minute. With Kevin mason. The Internet has been buzzing the last couple of two three days because the folks who make little Debbie snack cakes have announced they're going to be doing little Debbie ice cream this Christmas, an exclusive deal with Walmart that's kind of the taste of their Christmas tree cakes or whatever they are. As much as I love snack cakes, I always grew up as a hostess kid and didn't really enjoy little Debbie's didn't even see little Debbie's until probably the early to mid 80s when I was going to college in southwest Virginia. Now they've been nationwide and they've been around most of my life, but I didn't really notice them until then. My favorites probably the zebra cakes. I think they're the ones I eat the most if I do eat them. My wife, I think she may have nutty buddies in the house right now and she likes the Swiss cakes and doesn't mind the zebra cakes, and while I've had the Christmas tree cakes, they pretty much all taste the same to me. But the ice cream is making people crazy. Thought? Gonna try it. Gonna see if I can find a pint at Walmart when they start selling it. It's going to be a limited time run. It's going to be something that people are going to be looking for. The look out for, if you really care, little Debbie ice cream, who would have thought people would care that much?

"It's tough. It's tough down here. And we need strong representation in Richmond. More than just about any other area of the state in my opinion, just because of the nature of the economy in southwest Virginia, the changing nature of the economy. So you'll really soon whether I'm going to whether I'm going to toss my hat back into that particular ring. I saw your responses to a local paper disorder maybe when it's TV stations questionnaire on it. And your thoughts on broadband and your thoughts on the opioid crisis. So we're very well thought out and very well, well, articulated. And so you've clearly thought about the issues. You know what's facing the folks of southwest Virginia? And I know that you'd be a great advocate. I followed your career for years, and I know the type of person you are. So if you do run, please let me know. I'm very interested in learning more for sure. And then if you're in the campaign, let's chat. If I get into it, people are going to know pretty short order. We'll say that. Sounds good here. But the other thing that I've followed and I've been very interested in and I'm extremely jealous of to be quite honest and quite frankly, the only reason I'm jealous is because I haven't started doing it myself. You are a writer for the Cincinnati magazine. Covering the Cincinnati reds, which is, I don't know. I don't know how congratulatory I should be here. But I would be trying to write about the Detroit tigers. So I understand where the passion lies, which is great. What's Bernie? Obviously, I mean my goodness. You're a judge. You know, Carlos attorney, father, involved in the community, doing all sorts of things. Baseball to me has always been like it's a hobby. I enjoy it. I watched it on TV. I listened to it on the radio, et cetera, but it's kind of like my go to escape. I don't escape to writing about the ins and outs of baseball. Why is that cathartic for you? Well, the truth of the matter is that, you know, when I became a judge when I was appointed to the bench, I had been for the last few years I had been writing quite a bit about politics. I mean, you know, I was, that was sort of my hobby, quote unquote. You know, a situation where I had generally I was staying up later than the rest of my family went to bed relatively early, and so that was kind of my time to myself was to write and I would write about politics. When I became a judge, obviously, judges are not permitted to comment about publicly about politics or not right about politics. And so I had to give that up. And I knew that was part of the deal. And I knew that I would probably miss the writing part of it because it was kind of cathartic for me. I enjoy writing. Always have. And so I just kind of shift shifted gears and moved into baseball because that was my other big passion. You know, outside of obviously outside of family and plenty of and the law, you know, but politics and baseball had been kind of my twin passions, I guess. And so I just started writing about them. Just kind of randomly and they kind of took off pretty quickly and I started to sort of a website and within a couple years I was writing for a ESPN dot com, you know, and since I'm a magazine, but very kind to me for about the last 8 not about for the last 8 seasons I've been a weekly columnist writing about.

Yeah when y'all were kidnapped by the the tyrants that it is difficult to be ian freeman. Yeah there's a lot going on. Spent few hours today at a protest rally freedom rally in concord with hundreds of people very well attended event. I would say at least. Several hundred people carla garrick wanted to call it two thousand and i'm like. Nah i don't think so. The whole area in front of the state house wasn't completely packed. I think then you're dealing with thousands but definitely was a large protests. Like if you didn't make for you get four or five hundred people out at anything in new hampshire. You're doing really well so it was a very very good protests. Actually did i would say it was more of a march. They did march around the streets. Was there a specific purpose. Or was this just like the freedom rally. Just you know to suck. They had music they had speakers my one critique of the rally was why are you chanting. Us after all after all of these people is federal goons have done people find it difficult to remove nostalgia. They really do because really. That's what we were doing. Their bonnie was with me. I'll excellent from liberty blocked. We were all handing out fliers flyers that crowd thick like it was. We penetrated exit. Well now specifically that. But for the new hampshire independence concept of the foundation for new hampshire independence has a great flyer that i've been given out for years There's some of them had some h. Exit stickers on them but probably that was like ten percent of them but anyway the just getting the idea out about new hampshire declaring independence from the united states and from the responses we got from people was all positive and now i didn't have a chance to really do much of polling because it was so many people they're just want to get the flyers right but other people we talked to and other people who are gonna look at the flier and you know. Get their first reaction whether they're smiling or they say something nice almost all comments. No one said anything negative. No-one said this is terrible. Idea or through flyer back at me or anything like that so it went very well but yet then they're chanting. Usa later on and then singing the national anthem. It's like no no. We've got a long way to go but at least we're getting people. Dr nation is it's hard. It's hard to deal with that so anyway. Let's go to your calls and thoughts here and by the way there were free staters throughout the crowd. A lot of new movers. I met some people that been there just for a couple of months or one guy had been there for like a year after jesse's in virginia and he called in the other night to announce he's planning on moving up. Here go ahead jesse your back and can you all human. Yeah loud and clear. Go ahead so. I don't know if you remember where i was trying to kind of. Continue with the like my story but yeah I've been working at this this car dealership for five years working post sixty hours a week and Was a technician. There then started selling cars and somehow and this messed up. Economy was able to sell a good number of cars made some good money. But now we're not even getting like any inventory. There's no there's no new cars at the dealership. Normally we have about two hundred. But there's really nothing coming in and how much of this is because of the chip shortage. I have a friend of mine on the west coast who works in the automotive industry. Who says the same thing but he. His opinion is that he's not seeing new inventory because of the chip shortage. Yeah that's that's definitely a big part of the to that and then also Yeah 'cause there was a fire at this this company where they make the microprocessors on top of you have governments around the world shutting down production and lockdowns and all that other other great stuff but that's frustrating. I'm how can you sell things if there's not an inventory to sell you the greatest sales in the world you to have a product right. I was able to even even through. That i was able to sell sixteen cars and i end july and that ninety percent of those cars were just like pictures on a computer screen that i had to sign people up on. Wow so they're not even test. Driving picks up is what you're saying. There's not hardly hardly. I would have to test pre owned vehicle to get him in a car. That's that's kinda going away. So i'm gonna have to find a new well. The good news for you is that sales is a skill that generally translates from industry to industry. You just need to be able to apply your sales training that you have in the automotive industry to say another industry one that actually has a product to sell preferably right kuhlman So i mean look one thing's for sure there's jobs aplenty plenty. I mean they're just all over the place if you're willing to work their jobs. If you're willing to have a job there are jobs. Yeah -at's true so anything else. You wanna share about your experience. While you're moving up to new hampshire yeah. I've always thought about it. And you know. I thought about doing a little bit later in life. There's a few things kind of lighting a fire under me To those things. I had a friend pass away this past july and then My mom passed away the the month after that. So that was really tough for me and my family and you know My died in hospital. She had you know what they're claiming was was kobe but Yeah yeah..

"It's worth thinking about the alternative history when there were not to debates but there were three debates and that first debate happened over the summer at the omni homestead in hot springs where the virginia bar association was hosting that debate that traditional debate. That happened in the dead of summer when there wasn't a huge spotlight on the candidates and they could hone their talking points. And so now we're sort of forced to do that and you know the fall campaign season. Yeah also i. I thought it was interesting. Where the candidates were distancing themselves from their own base. We saw that with terry mcauliffe in two areas where he said that he would preserve qualified immunity for police officers so he disagrees with the democrats that want to get rid of qualified immunity and he was specifically asked once again about overturning right to work once again he did not answer the question of overturning right to work which means he supports right to work Once again distancing himself from the democratic base which is interesting and noteworthy we also saw duncan surprisingly distance himself from the republican base on election integrity. He said that he believes virginia. Has legit elections does not have questions about the legitimacy of virginia elections. And if he lost the election he would concede the race mccullough. So like that's distancing himself from trump who specifically said the opposite about virginia in particular junkin did not was given the opportunity but did not take the opportunity to distance himself on this issue of critical race theory. He once again said critical race. Theory is being taught in virginia classrooms. Which it's not it's illegal theory. It's like saying that. The theory of equitable distribution in divorce cases is being taught in the third grade. It's not. What do you make of that disparity thomas like. Why would you choose to distance yourself from the trump iast of trump issues which is election integrity but then maintain this idea that critical race theory is being taught in classrooms. Virginia what why the disparity there. Well yeah i couldn't tell you what glenn youngins team is thinking or telling him preparing to do. But what i can tell you. Is that those. Two things aren't equivalent supporting right to work or not supporting right to work as a legitimate policy position. And saying that you have trust in. The electoral system is a prerequisite to run for office for any party. So like the fact that that is what we're talking about as having young and separate himself from the base like who the heck is his base and mike. When i say that they're still working on their talking points. When i mean is terry mcauliffe is still running a message campaign about like send a message to donald trump. We don't want people like donald trump in this state and on young inside. It's and a message to joe biden. Then that's why you're voting me. I think ultimately neither one of those tactics are going to work because neither joe biden nor donald trump are running in this race and this is historically not what encourages people to come out and vote in these kinds of off year elections. The california recall election is proof positive to democrats that. Running against trump is still successful strategy in twenty twenty one. Like i'm not saying it's not going to carry them over the hump. What i am going to say is that it's not going to carry.

I get that you're going to think that I'm lame for even admitting that I had had been like crisis, but I did And it was great. You know what I saw? I saw that I needed to change some things in my life. Your mid life crisis. It's like your opportunity to look around and say, Well, did I get where I wanted to go? And if I keep going in this direction, Where does that lead is that someplace? I want to go? That process of asking myself that got me really clear about the parts of my life that I loved and wanted to embrace and support and nourish and the parts that I needed to leave behind and maybe the piece of advice is that you know, there is something to say, for maturing and experience, And that's what you have to look forward to. How's the test going on the national anthem rather than the salute the flag or just not have anything or America The beautiful Great. Donahoe wouldn't mind having the pledge of allegiance in place of the national anthem where Joanne Cloth Lee doesn't want any changes that, she says the national anthem before sports is part of an American heritage, and Jon Baker says no, Get rid of it all. Let's just have a full minute of screaming and yelling and get amped for the game. When did that start with the anthem being played before sporting events? What was it like World War? Two? Because this is not part of the fabric of America. You know, when people say that aid reaches a territory during the war, there was no let's sporting events. They're looking for war bonds. They wanted people to buy war bonds so they could support the war. The the war effort. And the national anthem came is a patriotic encouraged. Okay, Here's the Here's the national anthem. Now give us a buck, you know, And this is when people already were broke, like to the INS degree. You think some people have a tough now? 40% of the country during the war were broke. He's constantly pulling and when I respond by saying, what do you do? The answer is always the same while he pulls. May I pull him back, I get a stronger collar. The bottom line is, if you want to teach your dog, not to Po, there's a method that we use in training called the about face method. So while you're walking with your dog the minute your dog gets in front of you give him a little tug on a leash, making about face walking in the opposite direction and use whatever word you want to use. Walk nicely or hell. It doesn't make any difference. Now, As soon as he gets in front of you again make that same turn and walk in the opposite direction. I know what you're saying, Warren, You're gonna get dizzy. Yeah, you're gonna get dizzy, but if you consistently make that about face turn The dog will get the idea and little by little. He will learn to walk at your side. But just remember, he should be walking. You left all the time and you take your dog out for a walk. It's not your walk. It is more next time.
