US forces monitor Mideast skies at Qatar base amid World Cup

"At an air base in Qatar, U.S. troops are carrying out their usual mission of watching Middle Eastern airspace and keeping an eye on the World Cup, too. It's an exciting time to be here in Qatar with the World Cup right down the road. At all you need air base outside Doha, air force lieutenant colonel Aaron barilla says the games are on just about every TV in the air operations center. Not the ones monitoring the air picture, but the others. Some airmen like captain K shell trudell have gone to the games. She'll be at the U.S. Netherlands match tomorrow. Really looking forward to cheer on Team USA again with the red white and blue. Others watch at the base's main watering hole. Soccer's governing body is letting the American forces network air the matches. It's all a rare dose of the outside world for troops at a base once considered so sensitive. "After I paid extra to get the real idea, I'm thinking to myself, I'm like, okay, why did I even need to bother doing this? I had to take a passport to the driver's license place to get an ID that isn't going to supplement my passport. You know, so yeah, I think this is another one of those, it's theater, you know? And I know in Pennsylvania, it was a big deal that they didn't want to change the license and didn't want to update the codes and all of the other stuff. When I got my Delaware license, it was pretty much their license work compliance. So there wasn't any extra or anything like that. It was just done. But it's like, okay, I don't know why I needed to do this when I have a U.S. passport. So TSA to give them credit was very clever if you think about the dates, the deadline dates, first was October, the second one was very early in May. They're off season. They didn't do it in the middle of the summer when the traffic peaks. They didn't do it. Thanksgiving weekend. They've done it very much in the off season. And I still kind of wonder if maybe that gives them some wiggle room to say, all right, here's your three week period or something like that. All right, well, we can move on if you have some thoughts on this right to us. Let us know what you think. The geeks at airplane geeks dot com. So we've sort of outlined our positions. Another aspect of this before we move on is that I would be willing to believe that probably most business travelers, most frequent travelers, they've already heard about this and have already done something. So the population that has not stepped up to this, maybe they're not the flying public. I don't know, or at least a significant portion of them. I guess we'll find out. I just hope it doesn't get pushed out again, that's all. Well, I bet the airlines when you go to print your boarding pass for a flight on May 3rd, there's probably going to be something there that says, oh, by the way, that's probably that one last chance to let people know. Yeah, the airlines should probably do some awareness on this topic. All right, from the air force times, moving on to something completely different. An a ten C pilot earns top flying award for combat successes in Afghanistan. And this is about major Kyle Atkinson, who was presented with a distinguished flying cross. For his combat achievements in Afghanistan, the major is a test pilot with the 59th test and evaluation squadron. David, do you know what the test and evaluation squadron is? What do they do? They test and evaluate, right? Pretty much self explanatory. What are they testing? What do they test? Where do they test and how do they test? Most likely it'll be out at nellis, which is where Edwards would be the other test. And test and evaluation squadrons all have different missions and they support different aircraft. But basically, if you're upgrading new software, you're teaching that a ten to be able to fly itself with only one pilot, they do those kind of implementing. Or evaluating new tactics. And for implementation of the aircraft or new weapons. So we tested the valuation squadrons are all throughout the air force for all the various aircraft. So in this case, and 9 times out of ten, like this pilot made Atkinson are tested evaluation squadrons are advanced pilots or pilots with lots and lots of hours and specific aircraft. Their test pilots. So you want the experience brought in from the field to be able to implement new programs and new technology. So it's not surprising that a pilot getting a DFC or a distinguished flying cross would be in a test and evaluation squadron after his forward deployments to bring back that knowledge to be able to disseminate back to the fighting forces. All right, makes sense. I mean, after the manufacturer makes some changes, the air force has to test those changes evaluate those changes, I guess. So there's a whole organization that does just that. We also see another military item the a one H skyraider is now on display at the national museum of the U.S. Air Force. It's in the museum's Southwest Asia war gallery. Speaking of a tens, this is a radial engine aircraft that David, you can kind of say, I guess this preceded the a ten as an attack aircraft. Well, let's just say the a ten was designed to replace the a one. The a one is a post World War II naval aircraft. It started out for the navy. Replaced was a Douglas product replaced the TBF and the sbd and became one of the very first attack aircraft. And the skyraider had a long life, the air force started flying them in the middle of the Southeast Asia conflict because of its rugged ability and because its ability to fly slowly and support the helicopters that were rescuing the jolly green giants and to provide ground support for the troops. They were low, they were slow. They could carry lots and lots and lots of ordnance. And to this day, the air force is still trying to figure out a way to have a non a ten, but an a one kind of product that you can fly, take lots of hits, carry lots of stuff and over the years the skyraider flew everything from attack missions to airborne early warning was in multiple services and it was an amazing aircraft, but it was mostly known as the spad, which was a sort of contrary title for an aircraft because it was slow and slow like the spat of World War I fame or basically it used the call sign sandy, which was the aircraft used to protect the ground forces and for recovery of downed airmen in Vietnam. If you ever want to see great a one footage, I recommend you watch flight of the intruder. At the end of the movie, I won't spoil it, but there are some a ten a one excuse me that come in and save the day and it is phenomenal footage. And if you haven't seen in a one in person, they're big. In fact, some of the navy versions had an interior compartment radio compartment for two crew and some of the four seaters could carry stretchers, et cetera. So a very, very famous, very, very successful Douglas product that served and then eventually led to its replacement, which was the a ten. Interesting. Yeah, just from the photographs I've seen, I didn't imagine it as being a large aircraft, so that's kind of interesting. Yeah, that's the same thought that I had when I saw one at the air force museum. My cousin used to fly one in Vietnam. I mean, he talked about what it was like, but you know, you don't talk about how big is it? It's really big. Well, that doesn't mean anything. But when I saw it in the museum, this is a big ass airplane. I mean, I don't know, David, maybe you do. What did a skyraider weigh? But max, do you know? I mean, I know that's a pilot he kind of questioned, but yeah, well, no, max wait, I don't know, but there's this thing called Google. Google. Okay, I'll do it. I asked the question, I will Google it and then come back with an answer and in a few seconds.

All right, the next one, if you served in Southwest Asia, if you're on the burn pay registry, which we have an episode on, this may concern you. It says for immediate release, the Department of Veterans Affairs is adding 9 rare respiratory cancers to the list of presumed service connected disabilities due to military environmental exposures to find particulate matter. The following list of rare respiratory cancers have been added to VA's regulations through an interim final rule published in the federal register on April 26th, 2022. It lists the 9 cancers. I'm not even going to pretend to pronounce them. A lot of them have carcinoma in them. But there's different times to different types of carcinoma in the long trachea larynx. Again, not even going to try to try to pronounce, like I'm looking at one right there that starts with an a, you know, again, it's listed in the entire news release and we'll put the news release at the bottom of this episode's blog on blogs dot VA dot gov. "He's the author of Chaos under Heaven. We just did a podcast together. I think a couple of three weeks ago. It is a must watch podcast. Uh, you will learn so much from Josh and he joins us again. Today He is a columnist. And don't hold this against him for the Washington Post. Hi, Josh. How are you? Great to be back with you gone, so I am. You know, I'm wondering Well, first, let's let's start with. Let's start with the simple stuff. The big winner here seems to be China. They are. They are now looking to build new roads across parts of, uh of Afghanistan. They are looking at their Their mineral mineral reserve, which is enormous. Uh, they're lithium reserve. Tell me about the big winner here in Afghanistan. Right, Glenn? Well, you know, there are lots of different angles to this debacle. We're seeing unfold in Afghanistan, just the disaster for American credibility and standing all over the world, but and I tried. The way I look at it is that not everything in the world is related to China. But the competition with China actually plays out all over. The globe and every part of it, and especially in Southwest Asia. And I think this really Gives us gives China a advantage of rising up several several different ways. First of all, let's just Talk about the big picture right that Joe Biden, our President International. As president was supposed to bring America back. He was supposed to be proving that democracies can Defeat autocracies. He was supposed to be convincing. The rest of our allies come along on this project of building or restoring or repairing whatever you like to call it the international Global World Order, which is his entire plan for countering the rise of the Chinese Communist Party, and the threat that it poses to our way of life, and Boom right out of the bat. He's losing democracy is left and right. It's not just Afghanistan. Look at Myanmar. Look at Nicaragua. Look at I don't know Tunisia, you know all over the world in eight months. Autocracy is on the march. And if you're in any country that sort of on the border between sort of, you know, a struggling country that's trying to do better. That's trying to lift itself out of suffering and tyranny. And you look at that. You have to say that, like America walks, talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. And so that's the big. That's the big picture here is that the big Chinese Communist Party argument has always been that democracy doesn't work. It's too messy. Once you give people freedom, they use it to produce fake news and all these things that we believe in like, you know, human rights and the rule of law are all just shampoo. That's what she's using, Ping wrote in a thing called Document Number nine, which is in my book. Chaos under having explains that his entire theory of the case is that the democracy and open and free societies don't work, okay, And that is much better just to have a thuggish dictatorship. Even though you might not like what it does all the time. You'll have more stability and safety and that's what we're proving by handing over this country to a substitution, But I don't even gave the minerals And the diplomatic, you know, uh, power that we've yielded to Beijing and the fact that we through our allies under the bus, we abandon our local partners and who are on the world's going to want to work with us again. And who around the world going to believe us again. When we go into some place and say, Hey, we can make your lives better. And, uh, we're going to stick it out because we believe in these things that we profess to believe in. And But now China can go around the world say no, no, no, that'll work for a little while until they get tired of you. And that's what they're saying to Israel and Taiwan and everyone else. So, Josh, you said that, um President G is is looking at a world and saying autocracies work. Uh, democracies don't well, I would posit to you that that is the belief of Joe Biden or at least those around him. As he said before to the press, um, to the select press the approved press Right before his. I guess you would call it a state of the union speech. He said. You know, the jury's out on this, and that's our That's that's our quest to find out if a democracy like ours can exist, and, uh and actually hold its own. Against these autocracies, and I honestly believe he thinks that we can. It's I mean, it's the great reset. That is, that is the whole idea of build back better. That you do have to take some of these rights away from people to be able to compete against China. This is exactly what we went through with the progressives in the 19 twenties and 19 thirties and forties, Same thing. Well, listen, you know, I think there's there are similarities that you could drug land. But I think we should kind of avoid rapping. You know our battle with tyranny? Uh, the Chinese Communist Party into our own domestic politics. You and I have talked about this a lot, right? We can. Yes, there are. Uh, through lines right about, you know, government power and our ability to affect you know, uh, to speak freely in our own society, But it's not the same. We shouldn't draw. No, I'm not saying it is the same. I'm not saying that I'm saying That their view of a free republic like we have constitutionally That the left idea of a free republic. Uh, they don't necessarily believe in it either. Uh, you know, Z's in Ping he is, You know, he's he's. He's to the extreme of that, but they're on the same road. They don't think that we can compete. They think this is an old, outdated model. You know, I think there is something to that. They you know, you can't just preach democracy You have to actually implemented at home. And I do think that you know, the way of the bite administration is going is that you have to conclude that they think that America is in decline. And they're trying to manage that. The client right now what I say is that doesn't have to be the case. Now, if you're that's sort of how Obama thought of it, too, right. He's like, Oh, well. You know, it's just inevitable that these other countries are going to become so much more powerful than us. We should just manage our decline and handoff global responsibility. The problem with that, of course, is that when America with drugs, it's the bad guys we take over. It's like the worst actors. The strongest people like the whoever is new at the zoo with all the guns and the money in this case, the Taliban who fills that void. So, Yeah, I You know, I hear what you're saying. I agree with what you're saying, but at the same time that they it's not over yet, And then you have to fight against that both at home and abroad, because if it is the same point as you say, Then you know we can't afford to lose either one. We can't afford to take our eye off either ball. I talked to Nigel Farage yesterday and we've talked to some people over overseas in many different countries of our allies, and they all pretty much say the same thing. We don't We don't trust you anymore. What? What is the effect of that? On on the average American citizen. Why should they care about that? You know, it's Joe Biden came to power criticizing for alienating allies right? That was his old pitch right. America's alone America First Muse America alone and here we are in the first eight months, and he's done as much to alienate allies with anyone else. And the reason that that affects all Americans because if you're brought into this idea that you know America should you know, work with like minded countries and all these projects? Well, then we actually have to do it. We actually have to, uh, put our money where our mouth is. And then if we can't get these countries on board, especially with regard to the China competition, well, then that's a big problem. If you know it's one thing to lose Afghanistan to try and it's another thing to lose Europe. And that's sort of what we're staring at is that you've got all these countries that should be on our side and then by our side, and I don't mean American side..

You said now that 30,000 people. This was a long time ago. Actually, we're at 60, almost Have been evacuated from Afghanistan. I would like the elite political media specialist cable TV news divisions to tell me what is the magic number that will change the prevailing narrative? 140,000 everybody in the country except the leaders of the Taliban? Well, you know, they shipped 8000 people out in the last hour. Yeah, that sounds like a lot almost at 60,000. Charlie. I mean it. It will be probably obviously the most successful. The bad thing. Is the Taliban starting to notice. Yeah, that's right. That's going to require changing, you know? Yeah, the Taliban notice before our media What a spectacular job. Joe Biden is doing evacuating people. That's a good point. Um, Yeah, well, I mean you, said Chris Murphy. We were talking about that about the president's approval rating, which they seem to be cheering that now the approval rating they've created on their disastrous Afghanistan coverage. "So we're going to go all over. That's why didn't really have much of an insurer because we're gonna go a lot of different directions with With your story it started as a lot of my episodes zoo being on social media and then coming across someone who's got an interesting story which is why we bring mike in. You started out active air for active duty air force so first and foremost. Thanks so much for your service. I appreciate that. Thank you talk to talk to us about career progression the military. I feel like every time we have someone who's done military physical therapy. I asked this question. And i never get the same answer. Well it started in physical therapy school. When i did it backwards meaning. I completed my physical therapy degree and then talk to recruiter and then joined the air force as an air force. Physical therapist you know. Had i done it differently. I might have done it earlier. So maybe they could pay for some of those student loans that i had started my career out in california travis air force base Was really excited to be out there. I was always an athlete. Always outdoors person was pretty familiar with weapons and firearms growing up. Hunting and soon as i was in the Airforce i really had a passion for wanting to be one of those special operators. And i thought as much as i love physical therapy. Maybe this is the time to try something else. So i started that pathway and my commander said we really hired you ought to be a physical therapist there. A lot of other people that came in to be those special operators. So we're gonna keep you on your physical therapy track but if there's a chance we're gonna get you in with those guys in through kind of luck or just knowledge of my career aspirations. When operation enduring freedom came out in two thousand and three i was the most four deployed physical therapists that the air force had seen and i was sent down to southwest asia as we like to call it or the sandbox and i was and i was put with an international special forces unit so that was sort of. I got my little Carrot at the end of the stick without actually being a special operator. But i got to treat them so so so when you say international special like like multiple currently i don't wanna i don't wanna pretend i know what i'm talking about working with like other countries. Yes or working with the special forces that were australian british danish polish americans some of the host countries that we were in and some of them are still at liberty to say because those guys creep in creep out never are supposed to exist but it was. It was a great experience and much respect for those those individuals out there that do that. Wow favorite place ago as a as somebody in the air force international. You tell me someplace. I'd never been really like left a mark on you. So one of the places..

"Earlier wars of the future will not be on a battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space or possibly on top of very tall mountain. In either case most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots and as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear to build and maintain those robots just like the broader point about the afghan with withdrawal or like seeming. Like this finally like we're leaving leaving that country and you know you see the concurrent like news stories about. Oh what a what about our translators. What about all the people that are going to die. What about all these. What about all this footage of like the taliban tons of american weapons and and infrastructure. Oh how do you feel about that. And i think i mean. It's heartening in one way to see that basically nobody. The president included gives a shit. But like i. I can't you can't draw too much. Hope out of that because i just think like the american public overall just doesn't care about anything that happens overseas and to the extent that it doesn't trouble them they'll countenance any level of her us directly engaging in it or otherwise. No yeah that is the way that like the people now who are trying to motion manipulation the thing that allowed them to do it for so long the thing that allowed them to run this gangster state internationally so long was the fact that americans genuinely do not like thinking about this the thing that's preventing us to to quote the thomas challenge from getting back out there. Getting back out. There is that we don't like about this at all. You can't emotionally manipulate someone who's already doesn't care. And that's just want to underline that that's really by designed when the american empire is being created in the forties. The people who did it were like we're not gonna give ordinary americans any say over imperial management and so basically the entire national security state is by design made to remove not only ordinary people which like we barely get anything in the system anyway but even congress you know if you think about things that should properly be the function of a state like i dunno researching. What a state should do. That's privatized in this country to think tanks and now that's just expanded to be privatized to the literal fighting of wars and we basically have mercenaries like the status of dolphins traipsing across europe. We have a mercenary army effectively. And so americans. Of course they don't give a shit because they have no fucking say about what. Their country doesn't the world ambitious in terms of like the the reality of the prospects of the taliban once again taking over control of all of afghanistan. I mean dairy. You mentioned earlier. That mean for the show. You mentioned earlier. That biden like they're seeking to maybe offset that in some way by building do military base in central asia or like it would involve some deal with russia in order for that to be the case. I mean like how does that factor. The the russia thing is is something i've just seen in the last couple of days. But i mean the idea of you know. A sort of the the the deal for the us to withdraw is contingent on taliban meeting certain basically on unenforceable Conditions one of which is separating itself from al-qaeda and sort of making sure that afghanistan is known is never again used as a as a hideout for international terrorism So the point. You know what they've been talking about is kind of. How can we do Some kind of a facility. Aqua put put some kind of around afghanistan in the vicinity You know preferably in a in a central asian country one of the old soviet republics To monitor that and if necessary to do a drone strike on like al qaeda group or a a an islamic state group or whatever You know if we see something going on and potentially you seen People kinda slip especially senior military objects. Going slip suggested that this base could also be used to attack the taliban if there was some kind of catastrophic event like the fall of saigon. Basically you know the follow cobble But yeah it's been. I mean none of the the central asian republics have been Seemingly very amenable to this They're they're all kind of trying to make peace with the idea of the taliban taking over again you know not antagonizing. In causing a rift with them they're also All of them in are are still somewhat beholden to russia in some way Were at least needs to take you know. Russian concerns into account about hosting the american military And so there there's been over the last few days i've seen floated the idea of The us kind of leasing Or borrowing military facilities from russia in central asia. But that would come with. I mean that would come with a lot of conditions like intelligence sharing with the russian. You know their concerns about like putting. Us drones at a russian base and like having russia right east their military bases but we have to allow their butts on our social media. So i don't think that's going to go anywhere. But this is still something. That's talked about in terms of kind of maintaining some kind of presence in the region even after the withdrawal from afghanistan which just highlights the psychopathy of this whole approach. What is the united doing in this region. What and what fucking way is. Our american interests connected to just being permanently dominant and basically southwest asia forever. I mean this is the a pathology. It makes absolutely no sense especially given what's going on at home. It's you just see this deep throbbing psychosis at the core of the entirety of us foreign policy across parties. It's really fucking grim shit. I see where you're coming from with that. But you know maybe if we have more of a working relationship with these russians hardworking americans who maybe own a business who maybe are leaving. They have the space. They'll finally be able to buy the sable that they will not referring to anyone specifically random american owner. Not like you would see him on the street and go. That's a handsome guy but he's wouldn't wouldn't immediately pick him for business owner six feet. He's very confident. That's the guy who animals respect him. Everyone knows that he got his brother and sister he'd have no problems. Does it have wallpapers. They can't fuck that up there you go. He should be able to own to sables. Loves the one. One other thing about afghanistan that's sort of Kind of in concert with what we talked about earlier need the show. The rise of more proxy conflicts and less direct us involvement the one of the lingering issues is with the withdrawal Has been the security of kabul airport Which e either needs to there. There probably needs to be some independent security force stationed there or else a. Lot of countries may be the. Us included are going to pack up their embassies in kabul and get the hell out of there because they don't have any confidence that that the afghan government can hold onto the city So we've been talking to turkey about putting Leaving a residual force at the airport. Just ask the airport As a proxy basically for the united states The turks have said they would be willing to do that with us support. The taliban has said hell no turkey needs to get out along with the rest of nato and so that's very much up in the air. Like the turks are supposedly going to be negotiations with the taliban directly to kind of hash this out if they can but i. I don't know the that seems like a de to me. It's very similar to the whole vietnam thing with a decent interval strategy. I mean i don't know derek if you agree but that's kind of what i view this like. Everyone kind of knows in ten years. It's probably going to be dominated by the taliban. But it's just the idea of american prestige needs to be protected for certain certain number years..

"Palo alto networks unit. Forty-two recently released the latest edition of their cloud threat report and as you might expect covid. Nineteen played a big part in cloud security over the past few months. I checked in with matt. Cody from unit. Forty two for details on the report. Will we do cloud threat reports about every six months and whenever we do than we typically choose a different topic but this time around robbie still in the throes of the covid nineteen pandemic and what we wanted to do. This time was was something a little bit different. We wanted to see how has covid. Nineteen impacted security in the cloud. And so what we did was we looked at data pre cova nineteen discovery and then post covid nineteen discovery and really to see what what's changed in. How did you know. For example pew research found that employees working remotely pre pandemic was about twenty percent and then after within a matter of months that number jumped to seventy one percent at the pew research data. So whenever you have a massive shift in a workforce like that there is bound to be Security impacts and. That's really what we wanted to see. what's changed. How did things like that. Impact cloud security. And that's exactly what we focused on throughout this report. Well let's go through it together. What were some of the highlights. Here what are some of the things that really drew attention. sure The first one. And this is really what i would say. Probably shocked me was that we actually saw cloud security incidents increase once the covid nineteen pandemic began so what we found was that cloud security incidents they nearly tripled in the in the second quarter of twenty twenty so april to june increased by almost one hundred eighty eight percent now to be clear we define a security incident as events that caused violations in security policies that put sensitive data at risk so again cloud security incidents they nearly They nearly a doubled at a hundred and eight percent increase in that second. Quarter of two thousand twenty so just massive. Change in in terms of security incidents. That's kinda probably one of the big high level items that came out of the report. What sort of insights to you have on on the why as you know. What's what are the the the actual changes in people's behavior or opportunities or desires that that triggered the shift so when when organizations when when the cove relief i started to unfold this really caused many organizations yes because of work from home types of things they needed that rapid spin up of of basically compute that only cloud can offer and as organizations rapidly scaled their cloud usage We found that over all that there was a a massive increase in that. So for example. I'm only look at a certain industries. They that was very different. In terms of you know how they scaled their cloud usage but but overall we saw that most industries across the board rapidly scaled their actual cloud usage and one of the things that we dive into in the report is we don't just look at it globally. We actually dove into. How did it impact cloud security by region. How did impacted by industry. And what we saw was that as the scale their workloads unfortunately their cloud security incidents disproportionately increased. Well in really the the why behind that is that without automation sudden increases in cloud workloads lead to a dramatic growth insecurity incidents. And unfortunately that often leads to overwhelmed. Security teams overall is is are we at a state. Where the messages is hopeful that we feel like folks are getting on top of this or do you feel like we're slipping behind or are we treading water. We'll certainly in response to the pandemic. We were barely treading water and again in this was probably some of the some of the other interesting findings were that covid nineteen critical industries. They actually suffered a spike in security incidents right so we looked at from october of twenty nine thousand nine through february twenty twenty one of twenty one right is kind of a long period of time and we actually found that cloud security incidents for the retail manufacturing in government. Industries rose by four hundred two percent for for retail two hundred and thirty percent for manufacturing in two hundred five percent for the government. These are those same industries that were among those facing the greatest pressures to adapt and scale in the face of the pandemic retailers basic necessities and manufacturing and government for covid nineteen supplies. Eight so question. I would be asking is is if i was an attacker which industry poses the best risk reward in the answer is unfortunately retail manufacturing and government. They had huge bikes in.

february twenty twenty seventy one percent two thousand four hundred two percent june two hundred five percent Forty two april Eight nineteen critical industries Forty-two about twenty percent matt. World in much better place to fight desert locust scourge UNs FAO

"It's been described as a biological time bomb the worst upsurge in decades this time last year. Swans of desert locusts started to spread across countries in the horn of africa devastating crops and people's livelihoods. Fa yours emergency campaign appealed for urgent action to avoid a looming locust plague and humanitarian crisis. Now one year on. I'll we winning the fight. I put that question to senior locust. Forecasting officer keith pressman case when we spoke a year ago or it was just as the desert locust swarms with starting to invade the horn of africa. Could you briefly sum up the events of the last you well. A lot has happened in the past year. The last time we spoke a year ago swarms or just invading kenya in the horn of africa. They're spreading through other countries in the region. And since that time now there has been several generations a breeding. So what that means is that the locust numbers had just increased further and this is mainly due to exceptionally good weather. Conditions for the locus. The the problem did not remain only in the horn of africa but last summer there is a very important threat to west africa. Fortunately that did not occur but there was an additional extension of the current upsurge in southwest asia so in countries like iran pakistan and india. Fortunately the end of the summer. I very intensive efforts of those countries. The app surge was brought under control there but it still remains in the greater horn of africa. So that means them. Kenya's mali ethiopia dan and yemen. And that's that's what we're facing now again this year. And it's very interesting because you know when we last spoke a year ago. I mentioned swarms invading kenya. Well that's what they're doing again now and they started invading kenya from the north from eastern ethiopia from central somalia. I'm just before christmas and this was predicted so similarly to what happened last year again is not a surprise. We were expecting this and are we in a better position now. Are we better place to fight the desert lucasville. Much much better. You know last year at this time. We're in a very very precarious situation. We had you know. Huge numbers of locust swarms had developed and were moving in invading countries. That had not seen logos for seventy years. You know such as kenya other countries. That was a worse situation and more than a quarter of a century. They just simply were not prepared to respond to such a large scale invasion. They weren't trained. They had no resources. I'm no vehicles no spray equipment. No pesticides no aircraft. You know no logisticians. You know all of the elements components that you need in order to invoke control campaign so we were really. Let's say trying to catch up very quickly. We had no funding you know. Let's say desperate collectively desperate. I should say and the country's nfl. We're obviously we're scrambling doing the best. We could have that time but it was not enough we had to really really upscale and that's what's been achieved so now here we are in january twenty twenty one. It means we have everything in place. Yes we do have shortages of funding to keep those operations going in. This is extremely critical. But at least we're not at the stage of having to look for aircraft or having having to order equipment from abroad and wait for it to be delivered. All of the countries have those Elements in place. The faa ledge. Emergency response has seen incredible. International support including the mobilization of funds to tackle the small towns and prevent a humanitarian crisis always succeeding in the fight against desert. Lucas that show. We are succeeding. Yes if we had not been what we've been doing for the past year we would have seen a play by now. You know swarms from west africa to india from the equator to the mediterranean. We don't see that so. I think that that's confirmation that we are succeeding. We have probably less locust swarms than we did a year ago. A doesn't mean that you know we can sit back and relax but you know. There's a lot of work to do but i think the response as you mentioned from the international community has been exceptionally good globally. A more than two point. Eight million hectares retreated and twenty twenty. And that's an extraordinary achievement. These efforts of course they've saved enormous amounts of crop production an estimated two point seven million tons of crops or save last year. That's enough you know to feed eighteen million people for an entire year. The cost of that That was saved is something around eight hundred million dollars and you put that into balance with you. Know what did it costs to save that production we received last year. One hundred and ninety four million dollars so with that investment were able to save you know eight hundred million dollars or the food in additional able to to protect and safeguard one point two million households their livelihood. It's so you know our desert. Locusts extremely devastating. Obviously the response in the pasture has been exceptionally good. And of course you have to remember. We're competing against other emergencies. Such as covid nineteen indeed twenty twenty was a particularly challenging year. What can we expect for the will. The current upsurge continuing the problem. Is that the weather. Continues to favor the locus and you know. In the past locus upsurges lukas plagues they collapse because of two factors on because of the human intervention. You know the control operations everything that. We're trying to do to reduce locus numbers and a failure in the weather at and so far we're saying the former i'm we see those upskilled control operations working very well. I mean more than twenty one aircraft or an operation in eastern africa. But we haven't seen the break in the weather. We had again an extraordinary event last month in the horn of africa. Right exactly where the locust were we had a cyclone in december. Cyclones don't occur in the horn of africa december. But this is the second year in a row where we've had that so until we see you know kind of a break in the weather. And what does that mean. It means a failure of seasonal rains essentially or very unusually cold temperatures or strange wins that might carry all the locus into the ocean and where they would paris but until we see that we still have the challenge to to manage. This locus upsurge and try to to reduce impacts on food security and people's livelihood so for this year twenty twenty one and basically from now until summertime. We need eighty million dollars and the majority of this would be spent on maintaining those essential control operations by air and by ground as well as protecting the livelihoods. That was cave craftsman. Faa's seniors locust forrcasting.
