"With you on a Friday thanks for being Willis in November is child grief awareness month Childhood bereavement was a critical issue before COVID-19 but the pandemic has exacerbated the problem ABC producer Leighton Schneider spoke with ESPN's Brian greasy who is cofounder of a Judy's house which helps grieving children and families in Denver Colorado This is an issue that hits close to home for Brian creasy and his family Judy was my mom She died when I was 12 years old from breast cancer She was a nurse by trade and was the most compassionate and caring person that I've ever known in my life You remember thinking he was alone when he lost his mom at the age of 12 He was angry at society for not hearing cancer and God for taking someone who did so many good things Most dangerous I was angry at myself for not being a better son when I had the opportunity Not doing more for my mom and not having a chance to go back and fix any of that All of that led to the creation of Judy's house and its research arm the jag institute in 2002 The foundation provides a safe place for children and families to find connections with others and works to build coping skills for kids and their caregivers Those coping skills are centered around feeling the grief addressing the grief and not stuffing it or alienating it but passing through it Feeling it and then learning how to build skills to deal with it Childhood bereavement was a serious issue before the pandemic But has become even more critical now According to the journal pediatrics it's a hidden and secondary tragedy with over a 140,000 kids losing a parent or caregiver to the virus between April 1st 2020 and June 30th 2021 COVID has exacerbated the issue of childhood bereavement Minority children bore the brunt of the deaths With one out of every 168 American Indian and Alaska native one out of every 310 black and one out of every 412 Hispanic children losing a primary or secondary caregiver compared to one in 753 white children One thing that institute tries to do is share data with others around the country on what is best done to help and what the risks are of not helping grieving kids We believe that childhood bereavement is a critical public health issue and that getting ahead of it and helping kids develop healthy coping skills is a key to addressing the issue and helping these kids long-term Greasy says society has a need to try to fix or say something to a child that is grieving but that likely isn't what's needed So something as simple late as saying I'm sorry Well when you say I'm sorry to a child that feels good to you It feels good that you're saying I'm sorry to a kid but to that kid now you've made it about you and not about them In reality we need to create a safe space for that child to open up to begin to have a conversation or to process The key to that is a relationship Think to yourself when you're in that moment how can I make this person feel the most comfortable And how can I let them know that if they want to talk about this When they want to talk about this on their terms I'll be here for them He adds the end goal should be to create that safe space If we all have that mindset that I think will do a lot better job of companioning and connecting with grieving individuals I'm waiting Scheider ABC News Multiple people shot at a North Carolina shopping mall today ABC's Dave packer reports Black Friday shopping interrupted by gunfire It happened at the streets of southpoint mall in Durham North Carolina We had three people that were shot and then we had an additional three people that were injured during the evacuation During a police chief Patrice Andrews Preliminary.

"Win the game. Nobody's talking about it in one of the tribe you don't because you know why, Jamal, you know why. You know why that happens is because and you see it today it's eating its way even into testing. It's like That's part of the culture that's not part of the culture that's like you said. That's a subculture. But if they say they try Teo and convince us that it's part of the culture of something that is just should be the normalized and should be accepted, and that's simply not the case. And they shouldn't be will go long. You've got to make these so called white chime improve community trying to keep a job. Trying to get rid of one. God, Look, look at the civil rights leader. Okay. In recent memory, the civil rights leaders you got Al Sharpton, who completely helped Tawana Brawley fabricated case and he got rich. Jesse Jackson was supposed to be a man of the cloth. He got rich. Then you got Benjamin Crump. He's a lawyer who's running around the country suing everybody. He's going to get rich off of all of this. All of these so called activists for the African American community want nothing more than for the African American community to stay down and to continue to be oppressed. Because they're making a living off of it. Washington pointed and over some odd years ago when he said, there is a class of cholera people who walk people. My God call it yet. We're going to Washington for 100 years ago, the planet's colored people get lost to keep Oh, Kara, people battle and victory so they can make any money That's the activists broke the drug dealing in game mangled. How about Everybody want to protest. You got a man who's a pedophile who was going in his car. Get the gun. You spray the police, right? Oh, clean. Don't they didn't have a gun in this garden knife. So allegedly. But you're not. You're not wrong, Jamal. Thanks for calling. We're up against Clark. Thanks for calling the radio program. You're not wrong about that. Onda. Reality is it's like the activists the Democratic Party as a whole. I mean, how many years if we want to get political on this, and I wasn't gonna get political. But if we want to get political on this, how many years in a row? Is the Democratic Party going to promise things? To the African American community, the Hispanic community, every minority community across the across the board. How many years How many you election cycles? Are they going to promise things not deliver and then keep promising the same things over and over and over again, because that's what's been happening real quick. Let's get Alan Online to Hey, Alan, you're on the radio program. How you don't Hey, this is Alan. How are you, sir? Don't get a nice job this morning. A I got a I got a story about kids and guns. But before I unpacked, I won't say that after watching last night. I've always been a conservative, but the contrast has never been more clear in my lifetime. So, uh, several years ago, when my kids were about four and two is walking around Southpoint mall, All of sudden, I was startled. There was a pretty big commotion behind me. Um, a bunch of kids running down through the hallway. A bunch of cops chasing and right in front of us right in front of me and my two kids. Cops tackled a young kid could have been about 15 years old and I'm thinking what the heck is going on here? And they pull a gun. They have the cops had their drug on guns drawn by the way. Pull a gun out of his kids. Waistband. Yeah, well, that's it. I mean, I know that absolutely can't happen. I couldn't see of the situation. I've never I've never satisfied Jalen Harris. In this case, I don't know what he looks like. But you're telling me that a 15 year old can't look like a grown adult And he's never been around for anyone that thinks anyone that thinks 15 year olds are not kill each other in Durham. Are either lying or naive. I know you go to South point these days. It looks like a police state. And I'm not trying to trade my damn freedom for security. But this is getting way out of hand and particular. Thank God. They're out there doing the good work that they're doing. And by the way, nothing This kid didn't have a gun, but they have to do their job. They have to look, Alan. Thanks for calling the radio program. I was. There was a When I lived in Charleston, South Carolina. I there I would not go to the mall out there. There was a mall out there came from what it was called. There were two miles out there. One was called The Citadel. The other one's something else, But either way, I wouldn't go to it on the weekends at night. Because or during the week any time that night because there were too many kids around, and it was a bad area, North Charleston is called is a bad area, and there's bad things going on there. Of course, young kids are carrying guns. Of course, young kids get get violent. If you don't acknowledge that, that means you're not acknowledging reality. And you're an idiot.
