"No i think that's great and sometimes your politics might require you're going to your boss or bringing it up in a meeting and saying. Hey what if. We flipped it over and turned purple and made it polkadot. You know and or you know what if we shot for a seven million you know. Created a goal of seven million vehicles. Have everybody go. Are you out of your and sometimes you can just do a small like case study on your own and bring it in with results is funny. Example comes to mind but one of the incredibly cool women. I've interviewed is a woman who believe it or not started a business to collect scraps of material from the garment industry in new york when she worked for the new york city garbage department and she started this business and some of the people who buy some of the remnants which are in some cases large bolts of fabric our designers as some of the big design houses. They wanna try a little design on their own without kind of making a big deal about it so they take the ball to they take the fabric and they do it either on their own in off hours or at home and try it out and then bring it in if it works if they like it. Yes i love that. I love that concept. So kind of sounds like what you're saying is that don't ask for permission to just make it happen. That's that's inspiring miss katie. Thank you so much. Thank you so much joan. I appreciate it. Oh you're welcome. Thank you so much for joining us today. And green connections radio katie. Sloan director of e mobility at southern california edison. "Providers. So we're able to be fairly open book And the reason that's important to us is that and one thing that we haven't talked about yet. Is it getting to some of these ambitious goals. Seven million electric vehicles on the road in california. It's not just about california. It's not just about southern california. Edison service area. It's about this happening across the us. And to the extent that utilities across the us can also provide supportive programs for their customers. We think that that will accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. Well i think you're right. Well that's interesting. I guess that's probably also because you're so highly regulated You can't possibly be competitive right. Gosh i hope. They're adopting it because some of these utilities around the country and we know better than i do are just kind of archaic and see no evil hear no evil speak no evil just like keeping themselves bolivia's to what is quite obvious coming down the road if it's not already there and i sometimes wonder what's going to drive them but maybe you're making it easier and saying here just you just do what we did but adapted for your community or for your pc or for your grid. Structure will make it easier for them to do the right thing. That's our intent. And i will say it's encouraging because i've spit spoken with utilities from the northeast from the south from texas from the middle of the country from hawaii so i'm seeing interest in a lot of places and one of the things that excites me. The most is when i when. I see news about you. Typically ev programs that are in the middle middle of the country. Or not in california or new york places where you would expect it so I lived. "Where they expect to be putting in electric buses and electric trucks. So that we can have the grid ready When they have those vehicles delivered we've been building our electricity grid for over one hundred years planning and and building the The great out to meet new electric loads our core competencies so we are confident that working with our customers. We'll be able to to satisfy their needs. Oh so you're adapting your time line of preparing the grid for the increased load based on the timing that your clients have for putting those buses on the road. That's interesting but you're trying at the same time to increase the adoption of electric vehicles to seven million by twenty thirty. So i assume that implies then that you have a plan for managing the grid thirty to accommodate seven million electric vehicles. Yes we do okay. Good luck on that one well. I'm fascinated by utilities because not really because utilities have to reinvent themselves without losing a moment of service to anybody at the same time that they're regulated and don't necessarily know where all the raw materials are gonna come from or win so it's a it's a very tricky spot. When i was at chrysler. I negotiated deals with some real estate developers to include our cars in the sale of the homes that they were building and they installed to forty outlets in the garages. And as you well know they can vs. Then there's a regenerative quality right especially in california where you have power outages that can come in handy. So what kinds of deals with buildings and developers are you guys negotiating to help support your seven million cargo. Thank you for asking that question in california. We have requirements that new buildings including new homes are ready Means that the the buildings have to have at least some of the panels and the conduit put in to be able to support. Ev charging and right now. That doesn't mean that all of the infrastructure is there Or that the charging stations are there. So what we have proposed and we have it in front of our public utilities commission. Right now is that in addition to us building and installing Ev chargers as we have been doing for the last five years we also will provide a rebate for new home.

"We don't know if or when that might change. So i know the california is much more welcoming to this new. Have gavin newsom doing law. And i'm sure. We have a million people in tom out there in this work. Especially but how do you nass the cuts in the rebates and the the cancelling of incentives or letting them expire. And you know having to fight what's going on in washington dc on the regulatory front rate I think that's a very important question to ask. I think we should take a step back and recognize that. It's not just the federal incentives that are driving. What the automakers are doing if you look at their plans With a forty to fifty new models that are coming out in the next few years. Those aren't plans that can be retracted. And changed on. A dime and automakers are making electric vehicles. Not just because of what is happening in the state of california but in large part environmental regulations in europe and china. And we're seeing that. Those are not backing down at any point. So i think that the federal incentives are important but we should be realistic with where we are today and we should continue to gain the coalition of the momentum with other states following california's lead At some point there becomes a tipping point where there's enough states and population following california's lead that the federal government regulations may not be impacting with the automakers are doing as much well many of the automaker's though got together to support the rollback. The cafe standards for example. So that's certainly doesn't support the adoption of alternative fuel vehicles. What we saw with that was that there was a split almost down the middle of automakers joining california and those joining trump and even after we saw those announcements we haven't seen those automakers completely changing what their electric vehicle rollout plans are so speaking of cafe standards. Gas prices are pretty low right now. I saw something on your website about owning. An electric vehicle could be like paying less than two dollars a gallon for gas. Frankly i pay to thirty five a for gas in virginia so which is pretty close so how to low gas prices affect the success of the programs that southern california edison is trying to do to drive adoption electric vehicles. That's really interesting. I wish that we had gas prices. That were that low out. Here is gas prices. You know. I haven't gone to a gas station In quite a while not exactly sure what the what. The number is but today but It's around the high three dollars into four dollars for gas here so for us. The charging of electricity is significant financial benefits. So i think that's a consideration each location. You need to look at. What are the gas prices there compared to the electricity prices. That are there to see the see. The difference a couple of quick questions before i ask you a couple of career questions. I saw that. Southern california edison is also bringing more electric buses onto the roads. Can you talk a little bit about that. Yes we have a fairly large infrastructure investment program for medium and heavy duty vehicles which include transit buses and School buses in.

"Are available to customers. It helps to reduce that experiencing society. Oh yeah to get away from the nomenclature of or somebody like that right. You have said the goal of southern california edison's is to put seven million vs on the road by twenty thirty. That's only ten years away. How do you get from one point. Three million to seven million or even from five hundred thousand in california to a million in california. How does that how do you do that. It really takes all of the industry players being focused and aligned and making sure that we're moving quickly towards this goal we know that the state of california will not meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets unless we significantly decarbonised the transportation sector and moving towards electric. Vehicles is the only way to do that so rather than continuing to pilot new programs. We need to go to scale as soon as possible. Every day that someone is purchasing an internal combustion engine vehicle is another ten to twelve years of that vehicle being on the road So we need to look at this through the lens of. It's not just one thing but it's multiple.

Power Shut-Offs Become A Way Of Life For Many Californians

"Two new wildfires are raging in the Grassy hills of southern California and tens of thousands of people are under evacuate under evacuation orders. One of the fires the Silverado fire may have been sparked by a piece of debris hitting a power line according to a spokesperson for southern California. Edison. Meanwhile in Northern California, the utility pge shut down parts of it system to prevent its own power lines from sparking fires during strong winds and dry weather that has left hundreds of thousands of people there waiting for the lights to come back on after two days in the dark. These sorts of widespread power shut offs have become a way of life for many Californians and as. Lilly Jamali reports residents aren't happy in the tiny community of CON- cow about three hours northeast of San Francisco Jesse. Olsen and her family have lived through PG, and E. Power Shut offs not once. But twice in the last week, that's not easy it's like you're just recovering from one power outage and then you're preparing for the next one, a portable generator has helped them stay warm keep soanes charged for the kids at least try to do school. Online real. We also have a farm with livestock. So we have to keep the antibiotics refrigerated. The Olson's survived California's deadliest and most destructive fire, the two thousand, eighteen campfire but it burned down their home. It was sparked by old poorly maintained equipment belonging to pg knee online's that stayed active during peak conditions, and now we're all living in an RV. Olsen adopted her boys out of foster care. They'd been homeless before that I never wanted them to have to. Deal with homelessness ever again, you know they were supposed to have a forever home someplace where they felt safe for the rest of their lives, and now that's Gone Olsen calls PG needs power shut offs a necessary evil. Two hundred miles southeast Terry McBride has also suffered the consequences of fire and power shut offs. Her home in the community of mountain ranch was hit by a PG and caused fire five years ago. Twenty Four Hundred Square Foot House to a two hundred, fifty score for camping trailer. Just telling you if you didn't laugh, you'd cry she surviving PG needs power shut offs in her trailer. It's like when camping, you know my mom's got electricity and dress. So I was able to put my frozen stuff in her freezer so they don't go bad it's been tough, and while some PG fire survivors feel relief that the company is proactively cutting power McBride is frustrated at the utility for neglecting its lines for years. My feeling is why didn't you do your job in the first place? Why are we having to go through this? Now PG has promised to make long-term fixes to its lines. So power outages like these aren't permanent way of life for NPR news I'm Lily Jamali in San Francisco.

Exploding California wildfires prompt evacuation orders for 100,000

"About 100,000 people in Orange County are under evacuation orders this morning as the region braces for another blast of dangerous weather. That could push two wildfires into residential areas. Forecasters are predicting Santa Ana winds with gusts of up to 50 to 80 MPH at times over much of Southern California, with some the strongest expected in Orange County. Two firefighters were critically injured yesterday fighting the Silverado fired their Irvine and Lake Forest each suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over much their bodies, according to Orange County Fire chief Brian Fennessy. I was at the hospital shortly after both firefighters were brought to the hospital. They're gravely injured. An investigation is underway to determine how the firefighters were overcome by the flames. Southern California Edison reported to the state's Public Utilities Commission last night. It's investigating whether it's equipment might have started the fire. The utility said a wire that last two telecommunications line to a supporting cable may have struck a high voltage conducting line. Silverado Fire has burned over is 12,000 Acres and is now 5% contained. Irvine Mayor Christina Shay says residents need to be ready to go as soon as they get the word. We're urging everyone to comply with the evacuation orders, please for their safety and safety of our first responders. The winds were so strong that firefighters had to ground their aircraft for much the day they got back up by late yesterday afternoon and work through much the night a second blaze. The Blue Ridge Fire started in Santa Ana Canyon yesterday and has now grown to 8000 acres. That fire near your blend is also is completely uncontained and has forced about 20,000 people to evacuate.

"Give you those in about four minutes from now. So some are saying that the Silverado fire may have been sparked by so Cal Edison equipment. And guess who's saying it? Southern California Edison is saying they made a report to the Public Utilities Commission. Apparently they there was a wire that's just used to tie a telecommunications lying to a support cable. They call it a lashing wire. They think that may have struck 12,000 Volt conducting line because the wind I guess the ideas of the wind would have whipped it. Maybe broke it free and it whipped into a conducting line. And if they're reporting this already Keep in mind s O. Cal Edison has I think hundreds of thousands of miles of power lines going across its area in order even assuming they go full blast in terms of hardening them against winds dealing with it. You know the brush clearance underneath That's years. That's years in the making. So it's ah, It's gonna be a rough time, but they've had years. I know, but they haven't done it up to now. And so now you're right. Which is why the liability is completely crazy if they had done everything That they could have over the years and so that you couldn't so they would say there was nothing more we can do. That's a different story than ignoring it for all of these years and arguing that our our shareholders, our duty is to the shareholders. You can't do that with the utility. All right. You can't customers have to be placed either near the top or over the top. Or maybe public safety is placed at the top. Everything else has to be secondary. Developing long duration energy storage

"What a year it's shaping up to be for. Storage manufacturing has taken a hit and some projects are getting delayed for obvious reasons Our analysts that would mackenzie say that. The coronavirus crisis will trim twenty twenty forecasts for Battery Installations. Globally by almost twenty percent. But they still expect it to be a record year and the projects that caught our eye are not going to get built this year but they do show the strength and resiliency of this market a few examples here. A coal plant in North Dakota is going to be replaced. In part with a one acre battery array that uses a new technology capable of discharging for a hundred and fifty hours. That's more than thirty times longer than a lithium ion batteries. The Electric Utility in Hawaii just awarded contracts for sixteen projects that add up to more than three gigawatt hours of storage and those will replace an oil fired. Coal-fired Power Plant in California Southern California Edison signed contracts for seven hundred seventy megawatts of batteries. Many of them paired with solar projects to replace aging gas plants plus in China more hybrid wind solar and battery plants are starting to emerge and wood. Mackenzie expects rapid growth in batteries within China in the coming years. It's the country will lead Asia. This lead Dan Foley who would McKenzie's head of energy storage to proclaim to our journalist at Green Tech Media The utility energy storage market is blowing through milestones faster than we can report them for example those Sei projects are together worth two hundred megawatts more than the entire twenty nineteen market says Fin Foley. So let's go through these. I think we should focus on the bright shiny objects I. What do we know about this form? Energy Project Catherine mentioned this at the end of a recent show so catherine what is Great River Energy who is form energy and what kind of battery could emerge from. This relationship is a great river. Energy is the largest generation and transmission co-op and what that means is it generates and provides power under long-term contracts to a bunch of member. Co Ops like twenty eight member Co ops and this is how a lot of the COP system is formed in the US where they're small co ops that are often serving rural communities. They are very much about keeping costs low for their customers and customers. Own the CO OPS. They are customer owners but then they sign up for long term agreements with these GMT providers. Because it does save the money in the long run and a lot of these. Gmt providers we've seen have these long term contracts For old coal plants and so great river energy is one of those GM GMT's and they made a decision a while back to shut down coal a coal plant call strip and they have been thinking about. How are we going to backfill it? And what are we going to use to do that? And so they've certainly been deploying a lot of renewables and they just recently entered into this agreement with Form Energy and forum is a start up Led by Matteo Harm. Yo who came out of TUSLA. He was the energy storage guru there yet mingchang. Who's an MIT professor? Who has been really another brains behind storage and Ted Wiley who co-founded Aquaman and energy storage company and there are a couple of other. Mit folks. Billy Woodford and Marco Ferrara and there. It's just a team of incredible minds. Who decided to try to calm at storage by thinking about it it as potentially being able to replace all of these Uncaught non cost effective coal plants and so their technology seeks to be super cheap long-duration Nontoxic something you would find everywhere to be able to you know. Put together a type of a flow battery that could just replace the footprint of any fossil fuel plant so that is their goal. And that's what a great river energy has decided to take a bet on. Let's talk about the tech first and then the rural cooperatives piece second jigger. This is a battery. We don't know much about but they call it an aqueous air battery. What does that mean well? Basically in it uses more abundant materials. Because what you find is as that the metals wondering yeah we'll water but also the metals they're using or quite Easy to find and so it's aluminum zinc magnesium etc right. And so so what you find is that they have this ability to use low-cost materials right and they're able to Store lots of energy so when you think about this ad. Matteo talks about this in his interview The way that Lithium. Ion Batteries work is that you can actually charged quickly and discharged quickly but at the same time basically to charge it as to discharge it. And so what you find. Is that these batteries It's around like sort of being able to constrict the nozzle and only making it one megawatt right because you can imagine that you could make a lithium ion battery that's a hundred megawatts incised but only dispatch one megawatt at a time and then make it last one hundred fifty hours now. The problem with that those. It's a super expensive way to get one hundred fifty hour battery whereas this is a much cheaper way. It's it's similar to sort of Etienne redux batteries and others were the basically have this. The fluid that that holds the charge can be expanded at a very low cost. The fuel cell that converts that fluid into energy that's utilized is the expensive

PG&E says its power lines may have started 2 fires in California over the weekend

"PG and saying it's Orleans may have started to wildfires over the weekend in San Francisco's Bay area blackouts were in place to prevent down lines starting fires during windy weather but the fires began a section of town where the utility opted to keep the lights on besides were not designated as high fire risk another round of blackouts is expected to begin today as more strong winds move onshore joining us right now for a look at how utility companies and their customers are being affected we are joined by Jane Wells who was on the front lines but this right now now Jane Tell us how this is all shaking out let me just give you seen this is part of the getty fire this is in the hills above Brentwood one of the most expensive neighborhoods Sandra and people are going to have to stay out of their multimillion dollar homes for at least another night according to the mayor we'll get some more information later but this is one of the homes of that was destroyed her eight homes destroy they only have five percent containment so far this is la DWP territory but it's surrounded by affected areas covered by southern California Edison and after the bell we will start to get a sense of what these outages and these fires are causing utilities the St for Addison internationals looking for four percent drop in revenues to about four point one dollars for the third quarter one percent rise in earnings to a buck fifty eight but as more Windsor expected to come in later this week and more outages the governor is now order investigation into whether these outages are excessive if the utility companies should be penalized for them and whether they should be barred from charging people for power that not getting during the outages his particular outage outrages leveled at pgn eight listen PG and he has not been in this position before we would like them to consider reimbursements and we're going to be very forceful and advancing I want as many people bidding for the assets of Pacific Gas and electric as possible I couldn't be more clear I just hope people make a bid for the asset so we haven't competitive process moving up into June thirtieth of next year when we have set the goal and date mandate for Eugene get out of bankruptcy yeah well he's even floating the idea of getting Warren Buffett to maybe make a bid for preaching Anne Cooper meantime is offering free rise to and from accusation centers from those who've been displaced and Elon. Thank you for joining us this morning good morning good morning it's a terrible situation we can talk about the business side of this we could talk about the the human side of this I just give us an update on what you know and then I wanna get into what you think should happen well it's devastating for many people across -fornia many are without power of course homes have been destroyed by these fires totally unrelated I actually a staff member in my district who had a fire that almost burned his house not because of the wildfires because pg another outage so these PG lines that are causing fires aren't just using fires in wildfires this is a common occurrence across California and it's outrageous and in terms of how to manage p genie. What would you do I would have them as a public utility the facts are very clear they have failed to make investments in the upgrading of their infrastructure the regulators have been way to lose there's not enough accountability it's time for the state to take ownership of PG and make sure that they are doing what they need to do to keep the power on and to keep people safe I mean in the twenty th century when you have a state that has apple Google Tesla in it there is no excuse that we can't get power to our people on a regular basis congressman I'd argue that there are decades and decades of underinvestment in the infrastructure there if the state takes over where do you get the money to make those much needed aspirant's what we need to have stayed investment and we also need to have federal investment the reality is that we have underinvested in the smart grid we have under tested both of the state and federal government but those are investments that will that were needed and we need to invest more in forest management we did not have the prescribed fires that were necessary we did not have the brush clearing that was necessary this has been a decades of neglect process that has led to this crisis do you have any idea how much you might need for that systematic neglect in the infrastructure and in the forest management we're gonNA leave the conversation there congressman appreciate you being with US thank you for having me

"To go. Green ABC news by southern California. Edison. Hey, welcome. This is the Ben Shapiro show. That a lot to get to this hour. We're going to go through the supposed- bombshell that the FBI was investigating President Trump or maybe being a Russian agent who in two thousand seventeen we'll get to that. Plus, we'll get the latest in the shutdown politics. But we begin this hour with a new ad out from. So let's be clear about this. There are a lot of corporations now that are into the virtuous signaling. The reason they are into the virtue signal is because it's actually smart marketing, the reason it's smart marketing is because they've actually done market research. They find is that leftist feel more comfortable buying stuff from corporations if the corporations make them feel good about their pet causes. Whereas conservatives just by stuff they like, meaning that conservatives will watch this stupid Gillette commercial, and there'll be no less likely to buy a razor from Gillette leftists, watch normal commercial, you know, with like biological male shaving like, I don't believe in biological males or shaving so I'm not going to buy Gillette. So a lot of corporations recently is this sort of virtue signaling route. Eighteen that's why you see all of these socially conscious messages near favorite corporations Nike hires. Colin Kaepernick to kneel, even though the dude hasn't thrown down as a play the down in the NFL for a couple of years because they know that they are pandering to a particular woke social Justice warrior base. Well, now Gillette is doing the same thing. I'm glad for one that a company based on men's shaving their faces is now coming out against NASCAR. Limiting and makes perfect sense to me, maybe they should just come out against sex together. And then we never have to shave. It can be like the women yesterday. Celebrating January who have decided not to shave at all because that just re-instill is the patriarchy maybe Gillette can just abandon the razor business altogether. Nobody will shave men women must be hurry Balza for. We'll look like trappers Mateen seventy-two, it'll be great Harris Gillette's commercial, the commercial is all about it's so insipid. It's all about how men have embraced toxic masculinity. How they've taught their sons to be toxically NASCAR. Ooh. But we should really do maybe to. Let's go. To start selling razors for for castration because that's the only way to defeat toxic masculinity. Gillette's new stupid commercial. Bullying the metoo movement against masculinity. Is this the best a man can get? Is it? We can't hide. So they.
