While carjackings and assaults involving teenagers are surging in our region, new data from Maryland's Department of Juvenile Services is painting a more complicated picture. Juvenile crime is down versus where it was a decade ago. And that is true pre -pandemic juvenile complaints topped out at just under 15 ,000 in fiscal year 2020. But since it dipped to 7 ,100 during the pandemic, the numbers have jumped dramatically to more than 12 ,300 complaints in fiscal year 2023. Giraldi that said gun violence is getting increased attention but that young people are often victims of gun violence. the number of those who've been injured by gunfire has quadrupled since 2013. The 16 year old Duval High School student who was shot and killed yesterday has now been identified as Jada Medrano Moore. The shooting happened just across the street from the high school campus right after school was let out for the day. Police are now offering a $25 ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. Yeah I had one shot. And police believe that's all it took to kill the teenage girl as she walked away from Duval High School and then some kid. He got like blood all over his hands. The shooting happened so close to the school that students on one of the athletic fields had to run and hide under some bleachers. We are permitted to find a suspect who callously in broad daylight killed one of our teenagers in our community. Prince George's County Acting Deputy Police Chief Zachary O 'Leary says the girl was shot after two groups of people got into some sort of an altercation. It's not known if they were students or if she was part of either group. Not that it matters. At Duval High School in Lanham, John Doman, WTOP News. Metro wants to make it easier for you to navigate its stations, platforms and trains. the So agency is testing out some new user -friendly signage. Here on Metro, most of us have had moment that of doubt. Did I just get on the wrong train or how do I get out of the station? Metro's testing some new signs to give you a better sense of where you are and where you're headed in in a system where all the stations look the same when you're underground. Instead of listing final stations, the signs will say the direction the trains going north south east or west. And once you get there, exit signs will be labeled A through D. Attorneys for Amtrak went before a federal judge yesterday presenting its case for immediately taking control of DC's Union station. Amtrak is arguing that an immediate takeover of the station's leasing rights, which are currently controlled by a private company, is vital to the modernization of that station. Still had to crash under investigation in the district in southeast Pennsylvania Avenue closed between 11th and 12th streets. Traffic redirected through the side streets to get around that closure. So just be aware for now traffic volumes light enough not causing a big delay. Now in upper northwest 14th Street remains closed near the intersection with Park Road that as a result of a police investigation that is ongoing. And again, no word yet when that will get clear from the roadway. Now 395 northbound as you come out of Virginia taking the ramp to go into the 3rd Street tunnel right before you get into the tunnel is apparently a broken down truck in the left lane. No help. Metropolitan Police have been notified so hopefully they can get out there and give that person an assist. So again be careful approaching but again stay right to get by. You have all those lanes open so no need to run right up on that truck. Now now if you're traveling an I -295 or DC -295 so far so good. Maryland I -95 and the Baltimore and Washington Parkway both in good shape getting down to the Beltway 270 picking up the work as you approach and pass Middlebrook Road now more or less getting back toward before Montgomery Village Avenue. So they still have a ways to go but they are making progress picking up the work as a matter of fact looks like they're almost back to Watkins Mill Road now backing up and picking up the barrels. There was a wreck and unfortunately the downed pole and wires are going to continue our closure of Bueller road between meadowlark drive and coral crest lane.
