"Welcome to another podcast episode named People of Divine Naples, today you will hear an interview that was done on the very beginning of our Divine Naples podcast, this was the second interview I have ever done in the United States on 14th of January 2018, this interview was never published but for many reasons today I have to bring it to your ears, you will hear voice from my dear friend for 22 years, my neighbor for 18 years, the businessman that you should have known and the person that will be missed by many, if you are one of them you will always find his voice here speaking, enjoy the show. Hello all divine people, welcome to episode 433 named People of Divine Naples, I have the great pleasure to welcome person that decided to dedicate his 22 years of passion for people, he enjoyed to make them happy through taste buds and good vibration, he started experimenting in Naples 2001 with Chicky Hut where he blended in community immediately, after that he opened best rated and most successful barbeque restaurant in South West Florida, Black Eyed Pick and he built from scratch Franklin Social, here is one and only Carl Osborn. Hey Rich, how are you today? I am doing great, good to have you, you are comfortable? Yeah, oh good. Yeah, and our bar is serving good? Yeah, beer is good, check that out. We like to have interviews relaxed so we are prepared with whatever you wish as drinks, so if anybody want to come over and do the interview, so make sure we get the right information. So you are sitting here in a very humble studio, I hope you are feeling comfortable and good, whether it is cold outside, it is good, probably a good time to maybe do barbeque, a lot of people maybe do barbeque because it is Sunday today and you have been doing this for 15 years, isn't it enough of barbeque right now, you still going to continue? Yeah, we are just getting on a good roll right now, we are actually at the restaurant, we are in year 10 right now, but I had 5 years prior doing outside stuff. The question was, you know, if you still like it. I still like it, I love barbeque. That is good, let's just tell everybody what is the name of your restaurant, where you are located, so we can start with that and let's just roll. We are at the Black Eyed Pig Barbeque, it is 5307 Shirley Street in Naples, just off Pine Ridge Road between Airport or Naples Boulevard and Goodlett Road. It is hard to find, so you guys have to get on that road and it is a very short distance from Pine Ridge and you will see from a long way the pig eye, the design on the building. So it is barbeque with a big pig face. Yeah, it is a very inviting pig face. I wanted a big pig to put on top, but they won't let me do that. Oh really? Yeah. But you can smell it from a long distance. Yes. All right, you end up in Naples when? When did you come here? 2001, came down from the Orlando area. Oh really? So you lived in Orlando before? I did, I came to Orlando in 1986 with the Olive Garden. Oh really? So I didn't even know that. I know you for a long time, I didn't know you were in the Olive Garden. I was with the Ruby Tuesday prior for four years and came with the Olive Garden in 1986 to Orlando when they had four restaurants I think. So there is a long way, you are the expert in restaurants, you picked up a lot of practice there. Yeah, I've had a lot of practice closing restaurants and opening restaurants and lots of employees. So you know how to do it? Yes, absolutely. And you know there is a reason for probably keep it on the size you have it because it's very limited on seating, it's very limited with employees, so you can focus on the quality and there is probably, the end is, you've been voted, as many people say, the best barbecue in Naples, so what is the special on that? Well, we decided in the beginning, the building was a breakfast lunch restaurant when we bought it and I've never been open for dinner, so we started opening lunch and dinner and we got rid of everything that we don't do, we got rid of salads, so we're basically just barbecue. If you smoke it, we got, so we just sell what we do. We don't try to be everything to everybody, we do barbecue, that's it. That is very simple? Yes. And you do the hot sauces? Everything is yours? Homemade sauce. Recipes? Everything. Really? I just have to tell everybody who is listening right now, we don't talk ordinary barbecue one like you can buy in the Costco and you roll it out at your parking lot, load it in your SUV, this is serious business. Your barbecue is probably 10 times maybe more bigger, now you bought another little barbecue I would say, right? Specialty built for you, for your business? Yeah, we've got a competition smoker now that we're going to start with this spring, but we use it on a lot of caterings. But going back to the recipes, I've got a great friend of mine who I met here in my first business venture here in town, which is a little bar, he's from Oklahoma and his family has been in business since 1930 in the barbecue business. So a lot of my recipes came from him, so they're well tested, they've been there 85, the one on 88 years now. So, would you say this is like Saturn taste or what is this exactly? Well, Oklahoma, it's a dry rub, everything's dry rub and hickory smoke. Never baked, never boiled, it's just smoked. How many hours do you have to smoke like ribs? Ribs are around three and a half to four hours depending on the size. We do baby backs and St. Louis as well. St. Louis are the ones that came out of Oklahoma, we kind of threw the baby backs in for the East Coast kind of people. And what's the best seller? They sell about equal, we sell a couple of hundred racks of each a week, we have 35 seats, so we stay pretty busy. I think you did really well when bikers start showing up because they love the type of food and I think there's always a lot of bikes on your parking spaces. There's a lot of bikes, there's a lot of guys, golf outings, we always get the guys, we're a big guy hanging out for lunch and then they all bring their wives at dinner. Okay good, so you do what, I mean you do pick, you do chicken, you do sausages, just tell us a little bit. So everybody who's listening, their mouth is already watering right now. We do pulled pork is our specialty, we call ourselves home to pulled pork.

"Happens when that occurs. Nothing's gonna get done. You're always going to blame the brown skin people before being you know the bad guys. When in fact they're the victim of the bad guys. Personally say no no. I also want to point out that not every single encounter with our ancestors was necessarily bad when it came to people visiting this continent now as well okay. You know there's plenty of examples of that The the problem was once. The influx of people started coming. They started making rules. That did not include us and affected us and now they're turning around decades later having this debate as in like i said which falls into two sides either pro immigration or against. I'm not even gonna talk about an open border scenario. They've turned it into one side or the other again. The team mentality left versus right. Okay and you know to your point. Who's going to solve it. And what is the right answer today in modern times right. I'm not living in the past. You know i get it. But i just get tired of hearing people talk out of their ass quite frankly Without any kind of historical context behind it. I mean you just provided some i. I guess i did but you know but the people that are in roles of decision making and policy are not and it must happen there. It has to happen there otherwise people. Here's the thing. Most of the people now. Screaming and yelling about immigration are barely old enough to even know who ronald reagan worse. Yes exactly the relying on youtube relying on social media to tell them history They're barely every case. I'm being unfair there but anyway but yeah so you know. And the powers that be know that time comes the erosion of memory and with the erosion of memory. You know they can use that as as a convenient way to continue to blame the brown people. Oh the you know. The people screaming the loudest about immigration. Now they they don't remember they don't even know what caused it and we're not gonna tell them that's exactly what it is or the that is really is all right last little point. I wanted to bring up on this subject. None of immigration but well. It isn't a roundabout way but not not to the level. It is just to point out an example stupidity. Okay this is a whole that professors to be the governor of texas greg abbott staking a fleet of police vehicles brother and lining them up along the border rosa. Flores will take a look at the unprecedented methods. Republican texas governor grab is using to deter migrants from crossing into the state has thousands of migrants weighed in a makeshift camp under the del rio international bridge to get processed by immigration authorities. A miles long. Steel barrier of texas state trooper vehicles has gone up to deter the up to thirty thousand haitians. Cnn has been told could be heading towards the border if you are targeting texas to come to. We're going to show up in force and shut down the border. You see those images now. Somebody mentioned that night said i. I'm not even going to look at it. It's a waste of resources. It's a waste of tax dollars to. He literally said said. It was symbolic too to dissuade people from coming to the united states. She's through the texas border. It's symbolic of his stupidity. These are the people in very very powerful positions. Guys doing many ass like that. Yes in many. Instances voting matters. But that's a discussion for another day. So anyway just thought i'd bring up briefly but that's all i have brother so i have. Backup to the next few quarters and then based on the plans we have in place with all of our trade partners you would expect to see stabilization in our cycle times q. Two twenty twenty two to twenty two and that just you know from everywhere. They're doing business. They're having troubles in different kinds of troubles supply. Chain what is your next showdown isaac. Finally we can talk about ball bearings. Let's look at mary. Humor is just like mine Rbc bearings trades in her role r. l. shares fell one percent today and they've risen sixty five percent of the year. What's going on with rbis bearing slow. We talked earlier about a company's got a nine billion dollar market cap doesn't even have any product and doesn't even have any revenues. So why don't we talk about. Rbc bearings which only has a five billion dollar market cap. But it's got six hundred nine million in sales trailing basis thirty nine percent gross margin twenty five percent even margins. That's i mean. This is a fantastically profitable business. So what's the catch. They sell stuff to airlines and they sell a lot of stuff to airlines. Aerospace is fifty eight percent of the business industrial which is like caterpillar. newport news shipping applaud industrial. that's a big chunk of their and he's about forty percent but about sixty or fifty eight percent. Last year was in fact aerospace. And it was things like Department offense airbus. And yes boeing. Now you're wondering isaac i know. I know that you were hoping that we could someday do one. Hundred episodes of this show and and finally talk about ball bearings and we are but the bearings that they sell in an airplane. There are so many places were bearings are put to work like control wings on the trailing edge for the flaps and spoilers wings in the leading it for the slap center in the front of the plane cockpit controls interior seats and bins and latches and hinge points and landing gear and engine component of the doors. Don't forget the doors cargo and passenger doors. All of these things have custom-built bearings. And the problem at boeing. As we know is that they had a plan that they couldn't sell for well over a year with safety problems so they brought their numbers way down and these guys have to manufacture A year in advance by the steelers. Take some of these twenty weeks. It can take him six with six months to build these bearings and get him to the customer. So they're going to spend a lot of money in advance and they've been sitting on a lot of stuff they haven't to get it out of inventory and now they've got to start to build up inventory a year in advance of the rebuilding of the boeing fleet. That they expect to grow year after year after year. And so they've raised some money and they sold more stock and that's when the stock was down here today just for dilution. I guess. But i think it shows that they've got to spend the money now to have the product on hand to sell it for the next few years boeing ramps up production now the difference for them the other problem for them is at the aftermarket for distributing. These bearings has not been building up inventory. They've been taking it on the chin as so just when they should be building up inventory and buying from From these guys from from you know from roller bearings are bearings isn't selling to these secondary aftermarket distributors who normally at this stage in the cycle our buyers all those companies a lotta. Those companies got new owners and new owners according to rbc's ceo. Michael harnett just don't understand the business and aren't buying when they should be by the the aftermarket distribution side of the businesses events Usually at this at this stage in the In the cycle distributors The owning up there in the bill rate. We're going to be in the market would be buyers would be with with service levels And that's that would be normal at this at this stage in the cycle. It's not normal. Now is so many of the aftermarket distributors Owned by New owners and new management teams and They don't have experience. They don't have the experience cycles so what they should be doing with their capital right now. They don't appear to be doing. So i thought it was just who knew ball bearings so interesting. I knew it would be fascinating business. I have told you that it was an interesting business. Every oh all right coming up next a very special guest for one hundred episode. We're talking with amy lest who runs really interesting. Silicon valley charity called pledge one percent. You're going to want to hear about this. But how so. Many companies in silicon valley are changing the way charities are funded through this pledge. One percent from talked to amy less nick right after that.
