Hugging Strangers to Improve Mental Health

"Biggest question that I want to ask you and I've really been looking came forward to this interview. How did you land on hugs? I mean of all the things in the world hugging just seems both so obvious and in so far away. Can you talk about this for a moment to. I'm for more than a moment. Actually we can do the whole interview and I grew up in a very nurturing featuring family Nobody left the house about hugs. And I love you. Nobody came back in without hugs. And I love you unlike a lot of people sadly You know a lot of people's homes touch was either violent. Coercive non existed limited sexual or not by consent in my home it was purely by consent and abundant so I told my parents. They raised me to do this kind of work and I came upon the free hugs movement. there's a gentleman named one man people want to Google that it's J. U. A. N. A. N.. And one day he went into his towns. Wear with time that said free hugs. He moved there. I believe from England and as lonely and nothing like twenty minutes by nobody came up to him. People walk by. Look I'm like what the heck is this weird guy doing. And then this older woman came up to him and they the embraced and then people started gathering around and a movement was worn in two thousand fourteen. Valentine's Day weekend. I brought a group of friends to Thirtieth Thirtieth Street station. Which is the big train station? PHILADELPHIA We let ourselves loose or about a dozen of us who've walked around the train station with our free hugs signs offering people love and we did a free hugs flash mob. And it's only by consent. We didn't kamikaze hug anybody. We didn't go grab people we asked. Would you like a hug. And if they said yes. We'd Hug Ugh them. And if they'd say no we'd say thank you hope somebody one of the people that approach us was a gentleman who was in Iraq war vet. He was the only survivor of his platoon. The tune is any ED survivor's guilt and he said I thought about ending my life until I met you. People can join you so of course we gave them a sign and he was off to the races himself and I thought wow we've really got something here. Hugs save lives and I hadn't realized how much so until a few months later on my way home from the gym I had a heart attack at at age fifty five and it's part of my cardiac rehab. I walked around Doylestown Pennsylvania which is closer to home that Villi doing free hugs roles because hugs is our heart friendly not just cardiac friendly but emotionally heart friendly and they connect US heart to heart. So friends started calling. This hug mobsters and said Oh mobsters mafia guns drug van Yeah. I don't think so. What about hug mobsters armed with love and the movement was? I can't say it was born but it was extended beyond what one man did so I do it any everywhere I can. That is incredible and I love everything about it and my favorite phrase in there might be. We aren't hug kamikazes. I come from a loving family as well. We're huggers I always tell people that I am a hugger and kamikaze hugs again. My new favorite phrase that awesome. We hug I mean people just charge you and hug you in my family but of course that's my family. I'm on a first name basis with all of these people. How does this work in the real world? I was like man. If you just like grab people that seems like a really bad idea but if you just walk up to a stranger and say can I give you a hug. I'M NOT GONNA lie. That also seems like a really bad idea. How how were you? Bridging those gaps. Well couple of things particularly in the era of Hashtag Metoo. We want to be really careful about how we touch people bull because anything can be misinterpreted and on the flip side. We want to be sure that we don't buy into touch deprivation that so much a part. You've comparison culture there. The kamikaze hugs even people in my life. If I'm not sure if they WANNA hug will give you a hug. Would you like to hug. And when when I'm out on the street I mean hugged mobster. Sign helps people look at it like okay. What is that or if I how are you sign that says free hugs or if I were t shirt that indicates that I'm doing free hugs? Hugs when I do it out on the street somewhere like I was in Washington. DC hugging in front of the White House and there were people from all over the world all different cultures some of them Hug Your cultures and others and even that you know I was approached people and say may I give you a hug or would you like to share a hug. Some people are hungry for it. I don't say no thank you now. Now good when they think no. I don't want it to good. And they say no you're good but hug somebody So yeah it does kind of weird and culturally sadly because cousin woman it's less threatening because I've had male friends do hugs throws with me and some of them are a little leery about reaching out to hug people so this is changing aging the culture teaching touch culture changing relationship culture. I remember early on in my career for those. Who Don't know I'm six foot three? I'm two hundred seventy five pounds. I'm broad shoulders. I'm just a giant of a man and as I mentioned my family are all huggers and when I first got started people would just come up and hugged me and and I. I loved that that was amazing to me and as I got more comfortable in my role as a speaker and a presenter and public figure for lack of a better word I started randomly hugging people. Back I work in mental health. So there's more women than men but one time I went in for a hug and somebody put up their hand and said no no no. I'm I'm not a hugger in. You should be careful Gabe because people have a history of trauma. People don't like that. I mean you you know you're a man coming in and I thought about that for a moment and now I have the phrase are you a hugger and that that's what I say you know people come up and they talk to me and they're like you know gay Blah Blah Blah and I'm like oh are you a hunger and I opened up my arms terms and if they say no I'm not I say well I'm giving you a mental hug or I'm hugging you in our mind and I reach out my hand or I shake their hands ends or just do whatever they want. But you're right. This idea. That hugging is natural has sort of a weird for me. I'M NOT GONNA lie because I think that a hug. There's just something that you do for everybody whereas other cultures kissing hello is perfectly normal and I think that's very weird so are the majority of people receptive over or are the majority of people not receptive like what's your ratio there. How many people accept the hugs? Okay well most Are Receptive Nice when I first started doing the More people said no because I was uncertain anytime you approach someone with a new idea. The more confident you are the more people are going to be receptive because they sense that energy now a few people they know they thank you. Thanks for taking care of yourself. Not Everybody he is into this and I will do that like if I'm meeting somebody and they'll hold out their hands. I think that's the way you said. Are you a hugger. And Oh yes then. I'll hug them and they say no. And I we'll think hand and when people see not physical embrace of their you cool with handshake high five this bomb virtual hug. Wrap my arms around myself and imagine hugging down and usually they'll say yeah There are times when I've hugged hundreds of people in a day I go to different events like this summer. There were four pride fest and I probably hugged a few hundred people to out full day. I don't keep track. Somebody said Oh you should have a clicker. I don't WanNa do that. Because it takes away from the quality of what I'm doing quantity to doesn't much matter. No it's the impact ripple effect. I'm not totally out trysted. I do it for myself too because because it helps me feel connected to the world when I hug people. I don't know what their politics are. They voted for. I don't know what the religion is. Unless they tell me I don't know what their aired their gender orientation or sexual orientation is and it doesn't matter I just want the world to be a kinder more loving place and if hugged can help with that. I'm all on board with it. The next question that I want to ask is surrounding the worst case scenario you said that the majority of people are accepting the hugs. You've talked about the people who don't want hugs or just like oh no thank you and you say hey you should hug somebody today and they say okay and they wander off. Have you gotten any truly bad reactions. Has Anybody just flipped out. Never know somebody's now. I'm not really into hugs or no. Thank you know. I've never had that but again I think it's because I'm a five foot four inch women. Yeah I have purple hair sometimes and I wear colorful clothing. So I'm not particularly threatening but the coolest things that come out of this. Are the types the people that have had yet. I celebrate the anniversary of my heart attack. The brand new life experience and I always do a free hugs girl on the third party. Adversity a friend of mine. His filmmaker followed me around South Street in Philadelphia and there was this beautiful Muslim woman dressed in full hejab. Her her face wasn't covered. But our head and eh comes up to me and she offers me a hug and she says and who wouldn't want to hug and she's you know kind of gesturing and moving your body around who wouldn't WanNa hug and some people. Don't they say that you know. They don't want them and she liver finger pointing at me and she says even somebody they don't they don't want them they need them and I thought if the people who balch hatred did this beautiful woman who was probably in her forties. I'm guessing talking about the power of hugs to connect people and the the needs that they need. They couldn't possibly hate though. I think that's part of it. The other thing that's important to children when their children around that I offer a hug to later the parent if it's okay with you and okay with your child may help your child if the parent says yes and the Child Says No. I don't touch them and I'll say the child. Nobody touches you without your permission. So it okay that you're saying no when I was in. DC there was a family firm of Dominican Republic and it was a mom dad and probably like a seven or eight year old boy and he didn't want hugs. If I said okay we can do this bumps or high fives and he did both of those so a few minutes later before I left he approaches me and opens his arms so he was asking me for a hug. So I'll continue educator and this is about consensus. Well

"We're starting something new and exciting every week this month, we're going to debut, a different elsewhere segment focusing on music from around the world. And what that music tells us about the place where it comes from. So today we're gonna start with a song from south street. Popstar Shuba tells us a lot about mental health in the state of South Korean society. I let's hear a little bit of this. Now, he's a k pop star. But the song sounds a little bit more like Lincoln park that anything else fair warning. Get bought and get your nut Jim debt on that jock. So what he's saying here is it was around eighteen in my social phobia began sometimes I'm afraid of myself, thanks to myself hatred. Other times in the songs he says things like the memories I want to erase from that day at the concert. I was afraid of people. So I hid in the bathroom and stared at myself. It's very clear what he's talking about here. It's a personal emotional and mental breakdowns. He talks about going to therapy with his parents, and this isn't normal for pop, right? Alex, not even close. In fact, South Korean music industry is you've been very sanitized and censored and on top of that this kind of music, which is exported around the world to be mostly kind of happy. And or even if it's sad it's supposed to kind of have a message that universal. And so anything that kind of personal to the popstar or on personal issues. That's usually kind of taken out of these kinds of songs, right? Like, it's like fluffy could've romance. But like really kind of candy poppy like it's very chaste. It's definitely not usually things like. I was afraid of people. So I hid in the bathroom and stared at myself, what's really interesting about this is it's not just chew by himself the band that he's in it's one of those popular Cape acts in the world's it's huge. It's just massive even in the US now. And they also talk a lot about mental health social Ilya nation. This is just really breaking the mold for k pop not just in a solo act. But also, the main act imagined the backstreet boys are in sync or something like that talking about this. Like, that's how big this is they're they're just a massive act where what and signs like this are well received and actually celebrated in South Korea. And there's a reason for that. Right. South Korea actually has the tenth highest suicide rate in the entire world and the second in the OC after with Elena, a no if you really go into the numbers, there's the suicide rate is distributed surprisingly around ages like there's a lot among the elderly, but it's the top cause of death for South Koreans age ten to thirty nine. The large h range. That's a lot of people and the number one cause or saying, yeah. The leading cause of death while it's not clear why there's been a lot of research as to what's going on. But no, no one's really sure the point rather that South Korea has a mental health crisis. And it's also the case that in popular culture and public discourse most of the conversations rounding that mental health crisis has been surpressed. Right. I it's rare to hear someone as prominent Shuba talking about it. Right. And that's why these you're so interesting 'cause they're hugely popular. And if you listen to music there are other songs like this when you know about the singer's mental health, but they're also songs about things like the immense pressure that South Korean students face in school. It's not scientific, but the extreme popularity of the band definitely suggests that this message is resonating with people like a really basic level, or at least they're using their popularity to bring up really important issues, South Korean society needs to talk about. That's right, right. And so came up often stereotypes. Being dumb and shallow and shiny is becoming a vehicle for social expression for bringing elements of South Korean society. That's been pushed the margins were really important to the fore. You know music like this. Catchy..

You know, what it's time for. Well. Let's roll it out. It's time for the takes on your. You're gonna need them to handle these sporting hot takes. Scott tapes with Scott Robinson on the Mark leeann fan. Legendary Scott Robbins, another round of the Scott take. How are we doing today? Student like a game show thing a fun weekend. Was it fun? All right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Always good times. You're following the news a little bit that bring you down. Yes. Matter of fact, what's leading the takes today. You know, one thing I wanted to just get this out here right now that Elizabeth Warren e well, it's probably going to run for president of the United States saying that she feels like it's time that we have a woman president in the United States of America. I would say that. Yes. Elizabeth you're absolutely correct. I hope he run because we do talk radio and hilarity that will ensue by you running for president will be show stopping. Yes. All right. Finally, we get to a break cabinet today. Did you hear that two cabinet beat somebody up and went to jail? He didn't go to jail. They went to jail were just talking about this deal. Ueno's drinking, buddy. The one that he got pissed drunk with apparently is the associate professor North Carolina State university said in one instance, sprint cabinet initiated a fight that led to the arrest of a mutual friend when bread got drunk. He was often belligerent and aggressive on one of the last occasions. I purposely socialized with bread I witnessed him respond to a semi hustle remark. Not by diffusing the situation by by throwing his beer in the guy's face starting to fight that with one of our mutual friends in jail. He said I'm deeply troubled by Kevin. And he's his drinking says a lot about the type of person he is. Okay. Let's break this down for go ahead. Okay. Do you think the issue of the drinking in his past is going to be an issue as far as anybody voting? Yes. For him. No. I don't think on the supreme court bench is going to be doing keg stands or have a beer in his hand when making rulings or judgments now. No, I'm not saying that like a Jeff flake Murkowski, no. They're still going gonna vote him through even when the drinking stuff it because I think it's going to be out there. To at least portray him to drink a whole lot more than maybe he'll let on blackout drunk and not remember anything. He did the night before that sort of thing therefore knowing whether he did was sexually assaulted someone or not no I'm not saying blackout drunk, but if you get people from his passing, no the guy he was boozer back in the day like high school or college. He really could kick them back. Yes. Because he said, yeah. I drink beer, we all we liked beer. We and sometimes too many. That means different things to different people agree with that. So is it possible? It can be a problem as far as someone just saying, you know, that that just makes me uncomfortable that he drank this amount. And Dr Ford said that he was really drunk when this happened. Do you know is it possible that he doesn't remember? Well, that's the thing. Right. I mean, that's what they'll be getting back to do. I think it will make a difference or not. With the way someone could vote I suppose they could fall back on that as an excuse as to why they didn't select him. That's what I'm curious. And the answer is I don't know. I don't know what the answer is going forward apparently also removed. You take from a mattress damn him. The thing is you still don't have Dr Ford's friend, Leland Kaiser to say she was there or new Brad Kavanagh. Right. That's pretty problematic. I'm hearing the FBI investigation may be done today now. Yes for real. Yes. For real just read that one before I came in here today. Wow. Possible surprise you David today or tomorrow, it would because I mean, President Trump did authorize the expansion of of this investigation to include the other two accusers and all that. So they're going to be looking into more than what was initially thought. We'll see very interesting. All right next up on the new kid on the block who just happens to be Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Have you seen this guy? Didn't even real is. It looks like a wax statue. Serious. So apparently Trudeau they say caves and a last minute NAFTA deal making good for the US and not as good for him. The case against him is this will increase global warming maple trees will die candidate. We'll go belly up and a from bowing to the tyrant. Trump children will no longer have maple syrup for their egos horrible. The breakfast table gal, dating it. Quick is the reaction in Canada. The Trump really one that negotiation because goes out there saying this is going to be great for us for everybody win win win. Yes. People in Canada are feeling like I think we're probably saying that I don't know if they are not. Okay. I don't know. Yeah. That'll be interesting. Jeff flake said there is not a chance in hell's half acres. I would've agreed to reopen cabinet be background checks. If I was running for reelection. There you have it folks there you have it flake knows the voters in Arizona wouldn't agree with what he did since he didn't have to face the citizens of Arizona in this election. I'm gonna go ahead and vote this way. Well, he's trying to also plan out his future. That tells you what you need to know about him. Right. He has written a new book the art of the cave, which will be. I do have to ask this question because it it. It comes up every now, and again because people are lauding or liberals are lighting Jeff flake for pushing for this FBI investigation. They're they're loving the idea that this guy is willing to cross the aisle. When was the last time you saw the media rejoicing around a democrat. Who crossed the aisle to work with Republicans. Isn't it always the responsibility of the conservative to cave on conservative principles? You got to go back to the Carter administration for that one. And it's it's not so much even talking about this particular situation. But it just it strikes me as odd that every time a Republican reaches across the aisle. It's well, they finally wised up and did the right thing. There's never that pressure on Democrats. No none whatsoever. No. If if anything if one of the Democrats does want to work with Republicans just squish not standing up on principle. People would say the late John McCain sided with Democrats they called that guy a racist to running for president. That's that does that's a whole different rant that. I know what you're segment, but whenever they talk about. Okay. You can rent whenever they talk about. Like, we're all the good Republicans. Like John McCain and Mitt Romney, you trash those guys when they were running for president give me a break. Yeah. Well net flicks is going to let viewers pick the ends of episodes. This is interesting, isn't it? You like that? Yeah. I would like to see them included in the political Rena the outcome would be different for Hillary. Wouldn't it? She would select yourself to weaken. But no band camp doesn't like it so much. I'm like a well, I understand that. I mean, the art it's the art thing. Right. I mean, it's the direction of a movie and the scripting and everything else. And if I Joe six pack instead at home and change the ending of it because he doesn't like it. Well, I mean, first of all you're spoiling your own experience. Right. You're choosing to do that. Here's the way, I want this to end or are you talking about you're going like three fourths of the way through and then you get to choose like choice. A is it ends happy. With the way. I want choice b is it doesn't who's gonna choose b. You know what I'm saying? You know, what you're saying? But I mean, you can't go into the Louvre museum and change Mona Lisa's expression dist- because you wanted to be awestruck in one picture frowning in the next smiling in the other or is it is a piece of art. Could you also say you you go with whatever the artists wanted the ending to be? And if you didn't like it, you could choose this alternate ending and then watch that part again. Yes. I don't know. I mean, obviously, they're just trying to make the user's experience that much more enjoyable. I wish they would do that with music. With bands. Case out here. What's that? They're say, I don't want the long fade out here. I wanna I wanna call them here. Yes. On that real quick. This is what I would do take take what band what band that we all guns N roses Led Zeppelin. Okay. This is what I'd say with a guns and roses or say, even an Aerosmith would maybe recorded new music. I don't I don't want to take any more time than three days for a new song. Okay. I want actually you would slash to go and work up a riff, actually, what you to write the lyrics. I want you to bring the in on day two and finished the production on day, three whatever you got at that point. I'll take it. But I don't want fourteen years Chinese democracy. And if it was Tyler and Perry, you'd be like, there's a Marshall amp. Stephen, you can sit and write lyrics come up with the riff bring the other guys in later. I don't want much time taken on this. But I just want real just raw rock and roll. You used to do. Yes. Brings us for Tyler kiss. Your Sassafras also means what? Yes, whatever it would be. Yes, I would like to choose that ending for that band. Colorado marriage proposal on a mountain ends with the rescue of Texas couple who decided it would be a great idea to shinnied up a mountain get up there and get sick because of the altitude, and then lose their way and have to be rescued later. He was trying to impress her with a nice try to impress her. They almost skipped the vows and went right to that till death. Do us part almost immediately. Okay. So you hate that part because you think it raises the bar for every other guy. I just thought these two never procreate. Yes. Yes. It does raise the bar for his thought was in the right? But he didn't want it to end like that. Sure. Didn't all right, by the way. She said, yes. Yes. Even after bonehead made her go up there, Scott, Robin.
