"The Commerce Department confirmed in a statement last night that it will delay by a week restrictions that were originally to take effect today on TIC Tac. This after President Trump told reporters on the White House South Lawn about the deal between TIC Tac and owner bite, dance and others. We'll have nothing to do with China. It'll be totally secure. That will be part of the deal, and that will be both the oracle as you know, and Wal Mart. And I think it's going to be a fantastic deal. The president said. The deal also includes a $5 billion fund for education without specifying the money. How the money is being paid or who's paying it. As people remember and more and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the talk is heating up about who will replace her. And perhaps more importantly, when, but first over 200 gathered for Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial in front of the New York County Supreme Court building here in Manhattan. It featured live music and a spray painted art on a huge canvas. President Trump has already said he will nominate a woman to replace her and Mitch McConnell has promised a vote in the Senate. Hillary Clinton weighing in on Ginsburg, but also on what she sees as the undermining of US institutions. What's happening in our country is incredibly Dangerous. Our institutions are being basically undermined by the lust for power power for personal gain. In the case of the President or power for institutional gain. In the case of Mitch McConnell. Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House, the president says he has a few people in mind. I've gotten to know many of my thing is probably From a legal standpoint from a sophisticated understanding of the law. From a constitutional standpoint, I think it's the greatest list ever assembled. Among the front runners is Amy Cockney Barrett, presently on the federal appeals court in Chicago. Federal officials say they intercepted an envelope containing the toxic chemical rice, an address to the White House. The suspicious envelope was pulled in a government facility that screens mail sent to the White House. They're trying to figure out who mailed the envelope. Former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders talks about new memoir and Woodward book

"Sanders is a former White House press secretary. Newly released book is entitled speaking for myself. Faith Freedom. And the fine of our lives Since of the Trump White House. You can fell around Twitter at Sarah. How could be good? Marty said. Good to talk to you. Good morning. Thank you for having me. Yeah. Sarah, tell me what's the one thing you want is to know based on the book about this president that either of supporters and detractors do not know. Well, I think the biggest takeaway there have been a lot of books written about the president and about the Trump Administration and after 2.5 year, spending nearly every single day of those 2.5 years with the president, I wanted people to see the president that I got to know the Donald Trump that gets up every day fighting for our country and that really loves America and wants to see it succeed and be at its very best. And I tried to write stories and moments that highlight that that show a different side of this president, sometimes a softer side, the compassionate and generous side that I had the privilege of seeing every day. There. We had Jonathan Karl on that that long ago here on the farm. I think they believe he had written a book as well. And he talked glowingly about the president out spine of the relationship inside that White House press room, but Is this common with the president and in some of his detractors I think they're certainly always been tension that exists between the press corps in the White House staff and the president specifically, But it has ratcheted up in this administration, the amount of negative attacks and the tension between the press and the White House is higher than it's ever been. But there are certainly I think plenty of good moment to and there are good reporters out there that are trying hard to get good information to the American people. Unfortunately, they're usually overshadowed by the loud Most people in the room her looking to be more of the story, then to report the story and that became too common in this White House and in this presidency. Speaking with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former White House pressing, sir, of course in the recent released a brand new book entitled Speaking for myself, Faith, Freedom in the Fight for Our Lives Inside the Trump White House, Sarah the Woodward book. I think one big question that a lot of the present supporters have is this. Why did he give him such Accessibility. I think that after Woodward's first book about the president that was so negative, the president was hopeful that if he injected his own voice into the story, he could change the narrative. Unfortunately, Bob Woodward's been writing books about presidents for a long time, and very few have ever been positive. So I'm not sure that he was going to be able to change anything. He has. Woodward has a formula. He sticks to it, and he sells books and has done very well in doing that. I don't think I would have advised the president to spend that much time with him. But one of the things I find refreshing about this president if he isn't afraid to take questions from reporters, he does that almost every single day whether it's in the Oval Office, the briefing room or the South Lawn of the White House, he is accessible in a way that we have never seen a president be in modern history. There was. This has been a lot of criticism of Bob Woodward if he believed he had information and the president on tape. Of things that the president claim one thing in public and a love thing behind closed doors. And it would impact health and well being of the United States and its citizens. He had an obligation to report that did he not. Absolutely. He would have had a moral obligation to do that. That's why I don't think he felt that anyone was actually in danger as if he was more focused on selling books. Look, Let's not forget the president started talking about the Corona virus in January In his state of the Union address, he took early actions banning travel from China at the same time that Democrats like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi were attacking the president for taking that action. I think the president has really tried to do everything he could to keep the country calm, not collapse our economy completely while protecting lives and protecting livelihood. Having said that, did he lie? That's that's the sexism by his critics. But I don't think so. I think the president again he didn't want to create panic. I think we saw the similar rhetoric come from both from Joe Biden, he said. We don't want hysteria. We don't want people to panic. I don't think it is abnormal for the president of the United States for the leader of our country to want to keep our country calm and to keep people focused on defeating Disease and keep park economy from completely collapsing. I don't think that that is is wrong for the president to try Todo. The name of the book is speaking for myself. Faith freedom of the fight for our lives Inside the Trump. White House By Sarah Huckabee. Sanders. Sara. Thanks best look to the book to you as well, Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

"south lawn" Discussed on What Trump Can Teach Us About Con Law

"Hey. How's it going? Good. Little Quiz for you. two words Hatch Act, what does that mean to you? Of caught little bits of this in the news, and this is some kind of rule or law that means that. A. Person in the executive can't use like their executive position to be running for office or something like that is that is that close yeah. That's pretty good. That's pretty good. So Mrs is because of the Republican National Convention of course, and what we've seen already is the use of the White House for the convention. So the first lady has given a speech there, and the president is about to give speech on the South Lawn of the White House. So not only is this unprecedented for a modern president to use the White House in this way, it raises this idea of aren't there laws about this kind of thing. So there is this thing called the hijacked there are. But the answer is actually bit complicated. So the Hatch Act is a depression-era law that says, basically, government employees can't participate. Politically partisan activities when they're on the job and I mean the motivation for the Lai thinks pretty clear like you don't want employees to be using the symbols of their job and then also advocating for their own political beliefs or working for partisan political activities while they're on the job while they can do things when they're at home or off duty. Presumably the president and the vice president or never really off-duty. So how does it apply to them So here's the kicker. So well, you've heard a lot of things about the hatch act the Hatch Act applies to all of these federal employees except for the president wise president because they have to campaign by necessity I mean that's okay. Yeah that's okay. So that's true but the problem is, of course, it's not that trump just goes up to the South Lawn himself he has tons of his own employees helping him do this right and setting things up and making sure everything goes smoothly. Presumably they're all subjected to the hatchback. You know as far as will isn't there a law that is supposed to take care of this people don't do this. Well, that's complicated too because number one if you're a political appointee. The office that's supposed to monitor for haczek violations, which is called the office of special counsel. They can recommend or find that someone's violated the Hatch Act. But if it's a political appointee that is someone that the president has personally appointed during his term, a cabinet member, it's up to the present to decide. Well, you know that's a fireable offense I'm going to fire you for violating the hatch. Act? which is pretty unlikely for president trump to do. It doesn't apply to the president, but what's the big deal here? Just like we've been talking about for awhile it's all about norms..

Republican Voters Reflect On The Republican National Convention

"The Republican National Convention wrapped up on the South Lawn of the White House last night. That's where President Trump gave the final speech of the week He talked about law and order about American greatness and bash Joe Biden. We wanted to hear from some conservative voters on how the message is from the RNC landed this week from President Trump's speech last night. I feel like this was the line when he said that we do not put our trust In politicians or government. As our Saviour. We put our faith in Almighty God. Listen, Dick button, and I would second that when I saw the young man speaking about how he was cancelled. So were you talking about Nick Sandman, the young man who had Had the experience on the National Mall. So he got featured and talked about the idea of cancel culture. And it's something that is very important to me because my Children are more conservative. When they go out to college, or even at work. They will be. I don't know they will be bullied. I feel that there is an issue of freedom of speech. This is Dick Button ing. I agree, Chauncey. I really appreciated his speaking and for a young man. He really did a great job of stating. How he throat there were so many black Republicans Black Latino Asian, It was sort of a multi racial vision of the party that isn't necessarily in line with the data of the voting patterns. Can you talk about what you thought about what you heard from those speakers? Well, I think it's something that needed to be pointed out. Yes and tohave the black people coming forward and making that statement I thought was good. It was absolutely necessary for the convention to have people of different backgrounds and different status in life because It's the media and it's the message and that's what's causing all the unrest that saying Either you're here or you're there, and that's unfair. It's been unfair to the president from day one. You said something that this is the cause of unrest. This divisiveness What's your response to the viewers who say the cause of the unrest is police misconduct? Listen, this country is a big country with a lot of police departments and They probably are and there is justice. That's nothing Serve properly to say that it's systemic to state. It's systemic. To me, that's cowardice. My daughter is a nurse. And there are good nurses and there are bad nurses. There are good doctors and there are bad, doc and there are good policemen, and unfortunately what back we spent, and I'm sure we've all had that. Paul. Let me let you jump in here. Clearly, there are instances of excessive use of police force. Police officers are, in fact human beings and some human beings. They're bad things, whether by mistake or by malice, the insistence on framing The use of police force in racial terms has ruined any chance of an honest conversation about it. Right now, the president is dealing with a number of crises. There's the pandemic, There's thie. Massive job loss. And there are these protests over police misconduct. The's are all things that have happened under his watch. It's a little different from being new to the political scene and saying Here's how I'm going to improve things. If voters on the fence and watching all this why should they not think that the buck stops with him publicly here? I'll jump right in on that the president actually tried to get out in front of the Corona virus. The steps that he tried to take initially were blocked and he was chastised for them by the opposition party. As well as the riots that have been going on. The president has offered help to the cities and states. Not only has he been rejected, he had been ridiculed. He's been told to get out of there State He's been Billa vied. It sounds like what you guys were saying is the message to voters is None of this is his fault, and he tried and he needs another four years to improve the situation. I would go so far as to say it's sabotage.

"Yeah, I don't know if he was walking home or just walking out to get to where he was trying to get to in order to get home. We have a story on our website for a few minutes about this, but shows from the video. Of him being escorted by decent police to a crowd of protesters. Yeah, he walked pretty far. I mean, if he was walking to his car, he had a bad mark in space. It's not easy to park around the White House. I will tell you that, especially in a week like this, where there's just been a lot more closures around the White House. You know, security barriers have gone up. So pushing out the perimeter even further. You gotta walk a ways to get out to your car. Well, I guess that was quite a few demonstrators out there, too. So they were all right so in the South Lawn, and that's where they get the main event was held last night, the president laid out sort of an optimistic view of the future. Which I guess going back to the Democratic that last week's convention There's certainly a contrast between the two You know, it wasn't really like a campaign rally speech, the one that we're used to it. President Trump spoke for a long time 70 minutes, which makes it the second longest acceptance speech. But there was very little improvisation. He really stayed on that script, and that's not something he does. When he's out in front of supporters were kind of expecting that, you know, he's been itching to get in front of a large crowd for a long time. And he had it last thing on the South won more than 1500. People there. But for the most part, you know, he went through a long laundry list of what he says, are his accomplishments of the past 3.5 years, and only in the final minutes or so, did you go into a list of what he would do if given a second term and much of it was pledging to continue what he's been doing that long list of what he's done since he took office, You know, I think he's still At length about the Corona virus pandemic more than we've heard all week at the Republican convention, certainly defended his handling of the pandemic. But this is an issue where the president's poll numbers were not great 9% our latest polls and disapprove of how he's handling it. But he did criticize Joe Biden called for more shutdown something by then said in our interview with him last week. But if the scientists said it, he would do it. But president last night said That's not a solution to the virus, but rather a surrender well. He also says he believes will have AH, vaccine by the end of the year. And that's pretty optimistic. I mean, most of said spring of the earliest, but we'll see what happens. Trump paints optimistic American future at RNC finale

"With, crises brewing beyond the White House Gates Donald Trump stood on the south lawn last night to accept his party's nomination for president presenting himself as the last barrier protecting an American way life under siege from radical forces. Trump painted an optimistic vision of America's future including an eventual triumph over the corona virus pandemic that has killed more than one hundred and five thousand Americans left millions unemployed and rewritten the rules of society. But that brighter horizon could only be secured. Trump said if he defeated Joe Biden against whom he unleashed blistering attacks meant to raise the Democrat stubborn lead in the polls the democratic agenda he said is the most extreme set of proposals put forward by a major party nominee as trump's speech brought the scaled back Republican national convention to a close he risked inflaming a divided. Reeling from a series of calamities including the pandemic, a major hurricane slammed into the Gulf coast and nights of racial unrest and violence after Jacob. Blake. A black man was shot in the back by a white Wisconsin police officer an incumbent still trying to run as an insurgent trump's political playbook rarely includes Kohl's unity even in a time of national uncertainty, he has repeatedly if. Not always effectively trying to portray Biden who is considered a moderate Democrat as a tool of the radical left fringe forces. He falsely claims don't love their country. The Republicans claim the violence that has erupted in Kenosha and other American cities is to be blamed on democratic governors and Mas-. Vice. President Mike. Pence. On Wednesday said that Americans wouldn't be safe in Joe Biden's America. That drew a stern rebuke from his predecessor in the post the problem we have right now is that we are in Donald Trump's America said Biden in response. He views this as a political benefit to him. He's rooting for more violence not less. He is pouring gasoline on the fire. Both parties are watching with uncertainty the developments in Wisconsin and cities across the nation with Republicans leaning hard on support for law and order with no words offered for black victims of police violence while falsely claiming that Biden has not condemned the lawlessness along with Biden running mates, Kamala Harris offered counter programming for trump's primetime speech. She delivered a speech half a mile from the White House declaring Donald Trump doesn't understand the presidency. He thinks it's all about him. She said adding that. All of us, Donald Trump has failed at the most basic an important job of a president of the United States. He failed to protect the American people plain and simple for years ago trump declared in his acceptance speech that I alone can fix the nation's woes but he is found himself asking voters for another term amid a devastating pandemic crushing unemployment and real uncertainties about schools and businesses reopening without any federal guidance in

Fact-checking President Trump's acceptance speech at the GOP convention

"I in our history, a political convention on the South Lawn of the White House, the People's house thousands of cheering supporters on this pandemic summer night in mid August watched as donald trump among other things formally accepted his party's renomination during a long speech on this night his name. Spelled out in fireworks he followed a series of taped messages the four day Republican convention now over there is his name again. The president talked up our mortality rate tonight though in truth over thirty, five, hundred Americans have died just during. These four days as we watch this as we watched the spectacle. I digress, let's bring in our friends in our New York studio anchoring our coverage and watching it all low these many nights racial Matto Nicole Wallace Joy Reid and I know among other things we have a lot to talk about you of a special guest standing by as well. D-. Brian Thank you. Mary trump is going to be joining us again. Just a moment I do want to give my colleagues here a little bit of a chance to respond to what we just saw. If I think it might be helpful if I just did like a real real quick speed read auctioneers fact check yet just in some of the top lines, we can clear those out of the way. This was more than an hour long speech by the president we think this is the second longest. Acceptance Speech ever given by an American president topped only by the other one that he gave in two thousand sixteen. There was a lot and a lot of it was wrong sense that factually wrong just to be clear a few things. There are not any approved effective lifesaving therapies for corona virus right now there are. There's a lot of hope but there is no. Proven efficacy for convalescent plasma for any other therapy despite with the president said tonight, we also don't have the testing system in the world we have a disastrously failed testing system. We also have bluntly the largest and deadliest virus epidemic. In the entire world, we have four percent of the world's population and twenty five percent of the world's deaths. When the president said tonight, we have pioneered the fatality rate said that wrong? I don't he was blundering there, but he might have been correct in that blender. Joe. Biden. Does Not Support Abortion at the time of birth the New York Police Department has not endorsed Donald Trump's reelection. There have not been three hundred new miles of wall built card into homeland, security his Homeland Security Department. As of this summer, it's been more like three miles of wall built. It was Barack, Obama who signed the Veterans Choice Act. Our troops are not coming home. There are more US troops overseas. Now than when he took office, he has not ended any of these wars that he's supposedly vowed to end Joe Biden has not promised to abolish the production of energy. In the United States Joe Biden will not bulldoze the suburbs This talk about pre existing conditions in the weather and people can get healthcare. The Republican Party in the trump administration explicitly is in court right now, fighting to abolish the protections for people with preexisting conditions that were part of the affordable care act. That's going to be before the Supreme Court exactly one week after the election on November tenth, they are fighting to abolish protections for people with preexisting conditions also last but not least. President said tonight if for those of you who still drive have you looked at your gasoline bill have you noticed how low it is for those of us who do actually drive you don't get a bill for your gasoline. It's not how it works. Nobody males you bill and says, here's what you pay for gas at gas pump. If. You drive

The president's acceptance speech mirrored some of his campaign rallies with topics coming and going and coming around again. Sarah Sanders doesn't do a briefing, but she talked to reporters in the driveway a briefing, though, one for smaller outlets that have two or three correspondents in DC having a set time when the White House. We'll take questions is helpful the other is it's a one stop shop where everyone whether you're typing the news broadcasting it taking a picture of it a one stop where you can do it. And let me give you one last concrete example after the president announced his deal with North Korea regarding the repatriation of American remains the. White house. Did a great thing. They brought out people from the Pentagon who run that process, and they gave us a step by step explanation of a technical process. And I wouldn't have wanted to go to either the president or Sarah Sanders because it's really technical. It's really complicated. And so only only those kinds of experts can really walk us through it. I see that's interesting. That's the argument in favor of daily briefings. But do we have any sense? The White House is going to return to that format. As soon as they decide that it serves them. Well, you know, one of the things as I said, they're all these other other ways that they communicate. "Montgomery makes it easy to eat well no matter how busy you are their fresh healthy ready to eat meals are cooked from scratch each morning using local ingredients then delivered right to your door order delicious dinner just for tonight or schedule convenient weekly deliveries with montre there is an option for every appetite visit monte dot com to save fifty percent off your first order using the code dc fifty every one this is david chollian the cnn political director and this is the daily d c thanks so much for listening today on the podcast well that didn't last long the republican unity fast that we saw on the south lawn touting their major legislative victory in passing that big tax reform bill tax cuts this this unity did not last even full 24 hours because now we are learning as i record this podcast around noontime on thursday there is not yet a plan to keep the government open and funded there are lots of plans by leaders republican leaders that it's going to go through we're going to pass a continuing resolution that keep spending at the levels they are now just until january 19th we'll go to christmas break will deal with this when we get back will not everybody's on board with that and here's the problem to pass these kinds of spending bills republicans tend to lose some of their own and they need democratic votes to help it over the hump but nancy pelosi in steny hoyer in the house the democratic leadership has made clear there will be no democratic votes in last summer their priorities namely the dream act let's say or in the bill while they're not going to be in the bill because uh paul ryan and the republicans in the house have made clear they don't want to deal with that issue right now they want up.
