Global news powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over 120 countries in San Francisco. I met Baxter and this is Bloomberg. All right, back to Hong Kong, Brian. All right dad, thanks very much, 23 minutes past the hour. Let's get to this one. FTX founder Sam bankman fried facing more charges. He's now accused of conspiring to bribe Chinese government officials, joining us is Eva Benny Morrison, Bloomberg, legal reporter. So add it all up, it's 13 counts here, and if we put them all into some different categories, it's fraud, money laundering, campaign finance violations, and bribery allegations. These latest allegations under provisions of the foreign corrupt practices act, let's talk specifically about that. What are prosecutors saying he did? Yes, we certainly adds another element to San beckman free's case. Prosecutors are alleging that what sorry prosecutors are alleging that he organized the bribe of $40 million whether crypto assets to government officials in China. It's alleged that he was trying to get more than a $1 billion worth of crypto that was frozen in some Alameda research trading accounts on two different exchanges in China, unfrozen essentially. He tried to hire attorneys to do some lobbying on his behalf to make that happen. Prosecutors say, but when that didn't come to fruition, he turned to trying to pay a bribe to get those funds released. Now, we mentioned the 13 charges of those which would be the most serious. This one certainly sounds serious, but compared to some of the forward charges he's facing. It pales in comparison. The penalties for wire fraud securities fraud conspiracy to commit commodities fraud are certainly a lot higher. We're talking 20 to 25 years maximum in prison, whereas the foreign corrupt practices act. Bribery of defense, we would just talking about attracts a penalty of about 5 years in jail. What was presented as evidence or perhaps that has to wait for the trial about this effort to alleged effort to bribe Chinese officials. How did prosecutors become aware of this? That's a very good question. And we might have to wait to trial to figure that out. Prosecutors did highlight this as evidence that bankman freed said publicly that he had distancing himself from our major research, which was the hedge fund arm of FTX, but behind the scenes he was still pulling the strings. Prosecutors have spoken to a number of witnesses and former employees who used to work there. So we can assume at least some of the evidence to do with these count comes from that. I want to ask you about two more areas, essentially the trial itself. And then also the detention conditions and the bail conditions. So let's start off with when are we going to get into the meat of this with the trial? Beckmann freight is scheduled to base trial in October. It will probably run over a few weeks. Usually cases that are this complex and dense end up being adjourned in the trial isn't as quickly as it's been put down now. So we'll have to see whether the defense and the prosecution stick to that timeline. So a lot also is written about the bail conditions and his own security and whether or not he needs to be supervised and I hear they're talking about now having a guard posted to walk us through some of the changes in that area. Yeah, so the defense and the prosecution in this case have been going back and forth for months with the judge trying to figure out new conditions that will subject bankman free to a lot more monitoring in terms of eating computers and smartphones and encrypted messaging apps. Finally, today, the judge signed off on some of those new orders. He will get a custom built laptop essentially. That only allows him access to a dozen or more websites he can access FTX is internal database as part of his legal work to prepare his defense. And one of the most unusual aspects of the new conditions is that there has to be a security guard at his house whenever visitors come around or they have to hand over their phones and any other devices and be subject to a metal detector to see if they're hiding anything. And this all goes to the judges concerned that bankman freight will try and try and communicate with a former colleagues and potential witnesses in the case. Ava, thanks so much for joining us. Time for an update on global news where it's 6 minutes past the ara and we begin in China where president Xi Jinping is warning of a tough fight against COVID and interestingly he's now acknowledging some internal divisions within China. At Baxter with more from the Bloomberg newsroom in San Francisco Eddie. Yeah, exactly right, Doug, president Xi alluded publicly for the first time about the spontaneous protests that came from most COVID zero policies, but first, well, he claimed victory. With extraordinary efforts, China has prevailed over unprecedented difficulties and challenges, and it has not been an easy journey for anyone. We have now entered a new phase of COVID response where tough challenges remain. He said tough challenges remain in China's fight and he says that the nation's strategy now has been optimized to protect people's lives and minimize economic costs. She says a country has put people first and put life first all along and now has prevailed. Yeah, there another on the way in the middle of the week. And Kathy hochul took the oath of office for a full term over the weekend, the first woman to be elected governor of the state of New York. This day belongs to little girls. And to young women, who will grow up knowing that from this day forward, there are no barriers they can't overcome. Hochul says there are fights remaining for women all the way from the Supreme Court down, and Katie Hobbs has taken the gubernatorial oath of office in Arizona, the first Democrat to hold the office since 2009. In San Francisco, Ahmed Baxter, this is Bloomberg, Doug. All right, Eddie, thank you. Let's get to our guest and Barry is with us and his founder also managing partner at thread needle, joining us from here in New York and it's always a pleasure. Happy new year. Thanks for being with us. I think we can agree that one of the key themes last year was soaring inflation and aggressive tightening of financial conditions. I'm wondering from your point of view, does the narrative change, I know we have to begin talking about recession, but are we in it at kind of an abrupt turning point or are we going to see pretty much a continuation of let's say the last quarter? Continuation of the last quarter Doug feels like it's the most likely to be on the cards, which is the fed continuing to raise rates because inflation just isn't down where we want it to be quite yet. And so until we see the data coming in through January and February, that is when I think we'll have more clarity on whether we're turning the corner here on inflation data and the fed's response to it. And in your view, how do base effects play into all this? Richard, when you say the basic facts, you mean I'm talking about last year's numbers, of course, when inflation started off in a meaningful way compared to what it is in relationship to this year. Yeah, well, I think the fact that we're starting at a point that has got prices much higher that we were means that we would hope to see the rate of inflation come down. But I think we should have the problem that we have at the moment is so much has happened over the last 6 months that was in anticipated. And which the reactions are not yet clear as to what they're going to be. So whether it's the rate at which interest rates came up, what the real impact is that on the consumer, we still don't know yet. So if our consumer default rates, for example, haven't cracked levels that would be onerous, but we still don't know. We know that savings have been depleted, but you look at inflation, we know that some elements of the U.S. economy are still really suffering from outsized increases specifically in industries that are very laboral wage intensive. So while we've seen a slowdown as some of the core issues over the last month or two, we still don't really know yet how they're going to percolate through the U.S. economy and whether it's going to be Q one or Q two or Q three before we see some stabilization. One of the stories that we've been tracking quite closely is the COVID story in China. And the disruption not only to the population there, but also the second order impact, which is supply chain problem. And the third order, I guess, effect that you could make a case for is reorganization of global supply chains and reassuring of many industries in the manufacturing economy. Is that going to be a theme that becomes more aggressive, let's say, in 2023. The theme of chaos, Doug, I think, is going to stick with us for a little bit before longer term effects. And the reason I say that is if you look at what the global response has been to China reopening. On the one hand, it's been sort of euphoria that finally there could be an unleashing of recovery and demand in China and perhaps supply chain issues being resolved. On the other hand, you're seeing whether it's the U.S. or whether it's Australia or whether it's Europe slapping testing back on Chinese tourists and Chinese travelers coming into these nations which suggests that the west has not yet convinced that the possibility of new variants emerging is under control. So I think that's why it's going to be a bumpy ride for the moment. I do think Doug you've hit on something much longer term, which is this idea of reassuring or

"The climate change challenge is a huge challenge in engineering space to build the assets that we need. So it's a massive target. And when you look at what's required of the renewable sources like wind and solar, together with new nuclear power stations, it's an immense challenge. Low carbon nuclear stations, most of those retired by the end of this decade. So we really do need to get on with building our new nuclear power stations as well as large investments in wind and solar if we're to do what's required. New nuclear power stations. Do you agree with that Caroline Lucas? You won't be surprised to know that I don't agree with that. I think that nuclear is hugely expensive. We know that by cost of megawatt hour it's around a 120 patents compared to wind being available for under 50 pounds per megawatt hour. So it is massively expensive and it is massively slow. It would take at least ten, 15 years before a new nuclear power station would come on stream, but contrast that with what we already know about the 649 individual onshore wind and solar projects that have already been given planning permission, but they're not yet built, partly because the government has actually set its face against onshore wind. If we were to build those, it would take us far less time it would take us two or three years and in that time we could actually absolutely create more energy than the energy that we are currently dependent upon from Russia. So energy efficiency renewable energy is the way forward. So you're an engineer. Does that make sense? Will we have enough of what we need? And also at the prices that people can afford. Well, no. Obviously realize that I wouldn't necessarily agree with everything Caroline said that nuclear given the sensible financing is competitive with other low carbon technologies. In fact, the current operating nuclear fleet generates around 45 pounds per megawatt hour. And sure, the news stations that were commissioned some time ago were expensive that there's been massive steps forward taken in reducing the cost of nuclear energy, particularly by, for example, Rolls Royce with their modular, small modular reactor, modularizing, not just the reactor itself, but the whole of the power station, because the reactor part is not actually the expensive part, the expensive part is the massive construction that goes around the older designs. But Rolls Royce has succeeded in modernizing these aspects as well. So the cost is going to be more like 50 pounds per megawatt hour or less if we go ahead and build a fleet where you get the economies of scale and the factory production. So from your point of view, we have to go ahead with that because what we can not make that enough energy from what Caroline is talking about in the time that we have it. That's true and also Caroline rightly was pushing for the new wind investment in the new sale of investment, which is right. But if you look at all the wind energy that we have constructed so far, all of it over the last two, three decades, we've only got 25 gigawatts capacity built. And it looks like we need about a 120 if we're to stay on the journey to net zero. So the engineering challenge of building particularly the more difficult offshore farms is going to be immense. Don't forget we have to replace all of what we've already built in that window. So it's not like we're just adding. We've got to replace what we've already got there because they don't last that long..

"Or soon. Why is there such an uptake there? Right, so definitely we've heard a lot from Silicon Valley companies like Facebook and Microsoft discuss the metaverse as this next phase of the Internet and that's certainly a business trend that's continuing to take shape in Asia as well. One thing I would emphasize is that Asia and also South Korea has always been a big market for online gaming and that already kind of checks off a lot of the boxes for what we would consider a metaverse and that includes the ability to take on a virtual identity and interact with others in the online realm. So many users in Asia are already sort of familiar with this online culture through the medium of these online games and I think that's one factor that might certainly expedite the adoption of new I don't know whatever renditions of the metaverse that we might see going forward and that might be also why development seems to be a little bit faster in Asia compared to the west and on that end. But in the big scheme of things, the metaverse is still a fairly new concept. Some experts are divided on whether an app like the pedo or rule blocks is actually a real functioning metaverse because it doesn't have the immersive elements of virtual reality or augmented reality at this point. But definitely Asia is on a faster trajectory investments. All right, that was our reporter Ji Yong song. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. And that's it for today's tech news briefing. "Jagmeet singh how do you restore trust. When you've got a prime minister that takes a knee one day and then takes indigenous kissed a court the next and last but definitely not least. Hi i'm monaco's louis harlot o'meara and i'll be here with my very final installment of the much loved outpost news. We will be sad to see it. Go all that right here on the briefing with me. Chris tarmac. How do you solve a problem like korea. It's been confirmed that pyongyang has launched another two ballistic missile tests into the seat near japan after testing a new long range cruise missile earlier. This week hours later. South korea tested its own submarine-launched ballistic missile. All of this came. Just as the chinese and south korean foreign ministers were meeting to discuss how to disentangle this ongoing diplomatic conundrum and bring north korea back to the negotiating table. Now for more on this. I am joined here in the studio by john. Everard who served as the case ambassador ambassador to north korea between two thousand six and two thousand eight. John is a regular contributor here on monocle. Twenty four thanks so much for joining us here in the studio john. Let's let's start with. I mean the timing of these tests always seems somewhat conspicuous but then this is just what kind of happens with north korea's it. Well that's right. I mean the south korean test We're pretty sure wasn't meant as a political signal. The south koreans announced some time ago that they were going to launch this at a time when they couldn't possibly have known what was going to be going on right now whether the north koreans have launch their missiles today specifically to make a political point pops in response of south korean taught tests perhaps in response to the meeting between wang either china's foreign minister and his korean counterpart we don't know pyongyang cost never announces these things The trouble with north korea is that there's always something going on and you can pick any date you like in the calendar large missile. Then and if you're into conspiracy theories you'll find something To give it a political resonance you always find something but then as we say. This one particularly just feels whether it's a coincidence or not the fact that both launched missiles at the same time i mean just what is the significance of that. Should we be worried in that sense of a new set of arms race between these two yes of course we should be worried. I i mean. I don't think the the south korean missile need warriors I broker pipe prepared to take south korean statements that this was defensive and that they want to be able to respond to a possible north korean attack at face value. Thus body exactly what they were trying to do too okay The north koreans on the other hand are getting more and more worrying two sets missile tests. Remember just two days ago. They tested a long range cruise. Missile and a few weeks before that they seemed to have restarted processing at the yongbyon reactor. So they're working with their nuclear warheads. Not just the delivery systems. This is people's find raucous into the sky is bad news. In general but in the case of north korea is particularly worrying because north korea is in such a horrible horrible mess North korea has looked down for nearly two years now because of curvy. Nineteen that terrified about an outbreak. They knew very well that if the disease started to spread within north korea that have no defense against at all. The death rate would be shocking. It's this as exacted a terrible economic toll because they've closed down trade Warnings from the united nations food and agriculture organisation of of food shortages. A hardened lean time later this year. says the united nations And while all this is going on clear and instability at the top of the regime. Kim's hormone keeps disappearing. Now the problem. Is that a country in that situation. You get into yamamoto syndrome. Which you're looking blank. I'll i'll explain a ninety forty one. Imperial japan knew it. It it was in desperate state had no oil coming in. The only way it was going to survive was by forcing the united states. Out of the pacific and immortal was tasked with organizing this and he told me this is absolute insanity. If you start a war with united states you are going to lose it. And they said no has to be done and he knew that the one way that japan might just might just get away with it will be to destroy sufficient united states military assets in one fell swoop. Fake united states would back down hence pearl harbor now as we know the war in the immortal words of ember here heater did not evolve in the best interest in japan and north korea. Now face the same problem. They cannot afford to do nothing. The country's going down the pan and if they just sit there eventually they'll be a collapse that i think even the top leadership in pyongyang recognized that on the other end they can't afford a long war the only way that they are going to say themselves would be by a lightning strike on the south. And that if you want to do that then having a longest cruise missile having better ballistic missiles is very useful. I mean that that is a very Worrying wait way to look at it. Obviously as sort of active of desperation on north korea's part. I guess then the question is is. Can anyone talk sense into north korea before something like that happens We mentioned at the top of this. The fact that these missiles were launched at a time where china and south korea's foreign ministers were meeting is just conspicuous as well in that sense that you know. China plays such an important role here as a as a sort of ally of north korea. How are they going to be responding to these missile tests. And can they turn this around talk sense to north korea. Remember for the north korean point of view. What their makes perfect sense. If you are doomed you have just one tiny chances of adding you grab it. And it means south korea okay. How the china's responding One thing that's fascinated me about this series of tests is that within hours of the cruise missile launch. The chinese media reporting it with coventry. But they reporting the fact of the moment now that must mean that the north koreans had told the chinese in advance that they were going to do this because otherwise chinese editors have to wait for biscuit instruction for things like this which tends to take about twenty four hours before they're now to report So this was precourt and of course a cruise. Missile doesn't actually breach united nations council resolutions but following this morning's launch. Nothing in the chinese media. They it looks like they too have been caught. Wrong-footed nothing interesting in the north korean media. Either the north koreans on selves having decided how they're going to present this a bit of background here twenty six august as you remember. Chris was a dreadful dan the well that was the day of the bomb at kabul airport which mesmerized the world because of the boom. Nobody paid attention to the launch of core document in beijing the mission and contributions of the chinese communist party lost very formerly by the propaganda department of the communist party it was china's manifesto future is grim reading tub thumping starfish. China has arrived. We are the big kid on the block. Don't mess with us Look quite put some such croutons but that was the thrust of it. A lot of aimed. Obviously at the united states while why also surprised but partly Was warning other states. That china was not going to be messed around now. If you've got an unstable small-state on your border is a bad habit of testing nuclear devices that kind of document that you must've read. And they know that china has put them on notice. So far we've tolerated. You're pouring behavior. You've embarrass china time after time. You just look stupid in front of the documentary. No longer from here on you behave. What happens to slater the loss ballistic missiles that poking in the eye. And i can't help thinking that may not be such a great idea. I mean that is quite incredible in itself that they would be poking china in the eye so maybe china cannot talk sense into them but but at the same time what do you think. China's reaction at this point might be what. What kind of ultimatum might they give to north korea to try and change the situation. They called i mean. China cannot control north korea. This is part of their problem. They carry all the responsibility. They have none of the managerial power. The all they can do All the could do in. The past was to cut off economic support for for north korea and as north korea is has isolated itself in the world in any case know.
