I knew at 11 Bellingham police are looking for the three men who assaulted western Washington University students tonight it happened around 5 o'clock at the corner of 24th street and Douglas avenue just south of campus. Police say three men got into a fight with a student and then drove away. Those students suffered minor injuries. They did not need to go to the hospital. Anyone with information is asked to call police. Tonight, police are hoping this photo will help them track down the man who stole an SUV with four kids sitting inside. It happened just before 7 this morning on one tenth avenue southeast and Kent, all of the kids are physically okay. Police say one of the kids jumped out and a two year old actually tumbled onto the pavement as the car thief sped away. The man seen here eventually stopped the car about a mile away and the other two children got out and found help. Anyone with information is asked to call police. And they were able to tell deputies exactly where to find the man who they say took the product without paying. Stores are getting creative when it comes to countering shoplifters at Ulta Beauty in South Hill, a man suspected of stealing close to 20 bottles of colognes and perfumes didn't get far because one container had a GPS tracker. I think it's great if it helps me. I've been to many stores I've heard on the South Hill where I see people grab stuff and just run out. Staff at the store called 9-1-1 with the description of the man and the card he got into. They also shared the coordinates from the tracking device which led deputies to a Target Store about a mile away. I mean, just getting scarier and scarier every day, like the technology and how small it is. I mean, I think if they're informing people, then if it's within the store, they only have the right to do it. But I think consent is a good thing. Deputies found the car with $2800 worth of fragrance bottles in the back seat and quickly found the suspect inside target collecting clothing and jewelry. He was taken into custody and later identified as Elijah Harper, who prosecutors say just got out of jail three weeks ago after serving time for burglary. According to court documents in this latest case, Harper told deputies he planned to trade the merchandise for fentanyl. His steely steel, I guess you get, I guess you get caught. Why not? Well, investigators say Elijah Harper also had items stolen from a raw store. That's in addition to the fragrances. Tonight, he's in jail. He is charged with trafficking and stolen property and theft. Back to you. All right, thanks, Joel, retail industry experts say there are some drawbacks to GPS tracking to stop shoplifters, but the devices show a lot of promise. Not only do we have the normal, heavy slowing on the northbound five drive through Tacoma, but we have about a 20 minute delay from Tacoma to federal way because of this three mile backup heading up the hill out of fight. Past the scene of the crash near the truck scales, which has been over on the right shoulder almost most of the morning. So deal with very heavy slowing mayor sticking in Pierce County eastbound 5 12 is jammed heading From Canyon overthrew South Hill and then down into the Puyallup area. We have heavy slowing on the Valley Freeway heading up out of 4 10. Give yourself about 44 minutes to go from Puyol up to rent it now up in King County, the North Bong. Five drivers got about a 4.5 mile backup from South Centre to just after the Boeing Access Road. The crash that we've been dealing with here has been blocking the HIV lane and the left general purpose Lane for the last little bit. This is one of those days that you're going to be 10 minutes late before you walk outside the front door. That's what the delays are on just about every highway right now. Some are even worse. For sure. The eastbound 5 12 drive has six miles worth of bumper to bumper slowing to deal with from before South Hill all the way down to the 4 10 interchange in summer. We've had two crashes this morning on that corridor, which have cleared but we have, you know, basically Combined those two backups and we are looking at lengthy, lengthy delays there. And then you're looking at probably about a 50 minute trip on the Valley Freeway. Today, they're slowing getting up through Ellingson. We had an earlier crash up near Highway 18. So there's a lot of work to do there out of the north End. We've got about five miles worth of slowing on South found I five from The effort area down past almost 1 28. That's because of a crash over on the left hand shoulders never really been blocking right there where you come on at 1/12 in south average, So we're up at 50 minutes from effort to Seattle or Bellevue, which is about a 15 minute delay. Pulling away from Lynwood on both five and four and five is no picnic, either, So we've got a lot of work to do there. 50 minutes as well from federal way to Seattle as we're seeing, slowing up towards the Kent Des Moines Road and then more from the middle of Boeing Field, rented the Bellevue 35 minutes. Tacoma has been slow all morning continues to be so and then you get up to the Fife area and you're losing minutes up to highway 18. How are things looking, Sally? Well, we've got some work to do as we approached seven o'clock as we reach our first peek of the morning. I'm going to start with the three mile backup that is slowly breaking up on eastbound 5 12. You should try to make your way over through South Hill and then down towards you all of the crash to started all this. I think it's just left to one police vehicle over on the right hand side, but either way We have some work to do there once you get through that Puyallup to rent and probably running around 42 minutes. Not all that bad. We've got about 17 minutes out of the auburn area, So we've kind of eased a little bit there on North found 167 north. Beyond I five into the Seattle area hasn't really been all that bad through the Kit Des Moines Road today. We do have slowing there. But it's not as packed in or as long as you might experience on some days, But we have some work to do. 20 minutes up into the South Centre area and then about another 2025 to make your way into Seattle. So about 45 minutes from February to Seattle were still working with the remnants of this crash on North found 99 right at the First Avenue South Bridge, which has caused some problems on 99 509. Of yourself a few extra minutes there nothing out of Redmond or is equal to get in your way. As you go west found over to Bellevue or continue across the lake. Really? "How's it looking out there, Sully? Well, we're building towards our first peek of the morning, Erin at this point, and so we're starting to see things really fill in Dortmund. Four or five is just jam now through the S R 900 area there through the north end of the S curves. Give yourself 30 plus minutes to make the drive now from renting to Bellevue, and because we're so slow there that last two miles on the U. N +167 also very heavy. About 20 minutes now out of Auburn, and probably 45 all the way from Puyol up, So we're really starting to fill in the northbound I five drive through. Tacoma is solid as well. And then you have a little slowing near the can't Des Moines is road but then from the middle of the Boeing Field area Into downtown is pretty heavy looking at 40 minutes now to make that drive. We do have a new crash to tell you about that's on north beyond 99 there across the First Avenue South Bridge. Looks like it's in the right hand lane is causing just beginning to see some backup there out of the north End of 35 to 40 minutes from effort to Seattle or Bellevue. Nothing that should shock you as you pull away from Lynwood. Just the normal crowding. We expect. And we're still working with this crash on eastbound 5 12 is to try to work our way down from South Hill over on the right hand side. There still have the police with this multiple vehicle crash. That wasn't too severe, but it's just caused enough of a bunch of slowing there. So plan on losing about five or six minutes through that two mile backup. Cairo Radio. It doesn't quite reveal the accident that the congestion seems to be right at the end of the on ramp there, and it looks like we've got probably at least one lane blocked, not confirmed yet. It's hard to see from the camera. At least we have something to work with their the slowdown seems to start around South Hill Mall. That would be probably a good 10 minute loss of time. So far, we'll keep working on that for you to get more information on the Valley Freeway, partly because traffic is trapped back on 5 12. That's eased up a bit as you come up to 24th in same Sumner, But beyond that, it's a little bit slow. And then Auburn starting to bog down at 15th Northwest, it looks like we're up to pretty close to 30 minutes. Now on that drive between Puyallup in Auburn up the Valley Freeway, a little slow approaching four or five as usual this morning. They're federally to Seattle. Looks like probably about 31 minutes. Now it's getting a little more crowded. On that stretch approaching 5, 16 and ever to Seattle, holding it about 29 minutes, the slowing their starts north of Lynnwood, but it's very minor timer. Blistering Heat Wave Continues to Bake the Pacific Northwest
"Wouldn't want to hear any of these words in the weather forecast historic, dangerous, prolonged unprecedented, but that's exactly how the National Weather Service chose to describe the record breaking heat currently being experienced by millions in the Pacific Northwest. Want to wait in Tacoma, 1 13 around Puyallup, the South Hill grams at 1 10 Kent, Auburn about 1 11. Same thing in bottle and like I said, Farther east, you go Edmonds at 104. Monroe wants to homeless 1 10 to 1, 12. I mean, these are outrageous. These are just absolutely outrageous numbers for here. That's K I R. O s Nick Allard with the numbers for those close to Seattle. It got so hot that at one point, the U. S. Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, had to be postponed as the trackside temperature closed in on 150 degrees. We'll get into the summer games later this hour. But first Jeff Barrett Deli is the meteorologist in climate specialists for CBS News on Twitter. He's known as at weatherproof. He joined us earlier today from Central Park in New York. And I started by asking him what meteorological conditions have led to such extreme weather. Yes, so the meteorology behind it is pretty interesting. Very wavy jet stream lots of undulations in the jet stream and basically, it's elongated from north to south. So when it does that it slows down, everything slows down. The whole pattern slows down and we end up with kind of a blocking scenario in the atmosphere and There's a very specific block going on right now in the Western U. S. And that's called an Omega block and an Omega block is a pretty textbook block. And really, it doesn't allow anything to move. So what happens is the the hot air kind of pools. Intensifies and circulates around. And right now that happens to be located across British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. And so it's just sitting and spinning and intensifying. I mean, we're looking at some really ugly delays. And when it comes to travel times, it's well over an hour from Olympia to Tacoma in about 72 minutes now from Tacoma to Olympia. I wish there was some improvement for drivers on 5 12. We have some crowding. And not only as we come up 167 and 4 10 that you have some heavier traffic near the South Hill Mall, the canyon exit and, of course around the fairgrounds. It looks like we are dealing with this issue on south and four or five north of 100 and 12 that's taking up the right lane. Also watching the crash on both directions of highway 18. This is out near to 40 Force, the closer to Issaquah Hobart Road in that vicinity. But if you're going from Seattle to ever that's gonna take you about 50 minutes and a lot of heavy traffic right now, and a lot of places, including North and I thought from Lake City Way into Mountlake Terrace and around Highway to again No big surprise here, But there are some backups on south and four or five coming out of Bellevue. And this has been pretty much locked up since two o'clock this afternoon. All the way through Newcastle. In turn, It's really made the drive difficult on westbound 90 outside of Factorial. Drivers continue to struggle south and five from after 85th. It continues to get really heavy outside of the Duwamish River curves. I believe there must have been something going on out near the Duwamish River curves because that was a slight break in the back of their but we're starting to see traffic really pick up after highway 18 and heading out towards the to come Madonna and yet they're still working with the incident. The hit and run incident those on 4 10 and Bonney Lake. This is out near Myers Road Traffic. One lane is open in that area. But we're looking at backups on 5 12 outside of Steel Street, and actually, but we're really heavy on 5. 12 is we passed the South Hill mall heading out towards the canyon. The collision caused $15,000 in damages to his car and somehow just missed crashing right through his windshield. Those bikes are probably £20. Plus, it easily could have gone through the window.

Today We have more people out on the roads right now in the Olympia Lacey area and because of the conditions down there with redo have packed snow and ice in between the lanes and even in some spots, and some of the lanes themselves on I five. We're starting to see very heavy slowing in both north and south bound directions of I five right around. Marvin Road, which continues to see the South bound off ramp blocked but also Martin way as people are trying to get off their so expect to see some significant delays in that area. But based on the conditions, the further north that you are driving getting out of that area, you should be out of most of the stuff that's on the roadway by about the north End of J B. L M. And then after that, it's going to be a pretty good Dr. Looking at about 30 minutes to get you from federal way into Seattle 30 minutes out of the north and as well, the roads up there, actually, reasonably dry, didn't get much snow last night, or even much precipitation at all.
