"In Elizabeth, New Jersey reporter Alice Gainer, with terrifying stories of how fast the water roles when the Elizabeth River crested it sent water about 8 to 10 FT. High trapping some people in their ground floor apartments with nowhere to go heard her screaming and she was like, Help me help! I sell you okay, Several people saw their neighbor, a woman in her thirties, go outside with her dog. She was on the truck, but they say she went back into her apartment became trapped and died. Heard of me because I know that girl was in there. The mayor says. Three other people in the complex also died. A man in his thirties and two people in their seventies. Two sisters aged 67 84 1 of them blind. Kept trying to position themselves above the water. We stand up anything The water was up to. Here He was singing. Come my hair. Jesus. Come on. Sonia Rivera lives upstairs. I kept step, stopping on the floor to make sure they were still alive. First responders arrived in a boat to Rivera's, and within minutes, the fire department used a saw to drill through the floor so they could rescue the women below. I say, Why are we are gonna do you? The hurricane? The waters is up to Of the year, but they did have been like five minutes. He was three minutes. I think we should have been gone. She came out of the water praising God and I was right there with a reporter Alice Gator on the Gulf Coast. CBS's Jim Priscilla covered the landfall of Hurricane Ida and joins us Allison Island downtown New Orleans on Famous Canal Street. I've gone the past week or self, uh, here in New Orleans. Uncovering Ida experiencing Ida. I also experienced Hurricane Katrina here 16 years ago. And a couple of general observations first off in terms of the city. I think there was far more damage in Katrina, then from Ida. Now outside the city. It's the exact opposite a lot more damage outside of New Orleans proper, especially to the parishes, the bayou parishes to the southwest, Tremendous, tremendous property damage. In Homa places like that mortgage city, Thibodeau and then further south down towards Grand Isle, But I can tell you having experienced both Alison but in the aftermath of Katrina I and my colleagues from CBS and really colleagues with the other media who were here really feared for our lives because of the lawlessness, especially the first 345 days after Katrina hit. I remember Katrina hitting on Monday, and the storm itself wasn't that bad. But then, of course, the levees gave away in the city flooded and we all know the history, but I haven't had that sense at all with item in terms of these past several days after either came and going on Sunday came and went on Sunday. I haven't felt any kind of personal danger or or fearing for my safety. I'm curious, Jim. I know that, as you just said you were there for for Katrina. And I know you've also been talking to people that are without power and food and water and might be for weeks. I wonder. If people there are wondering what the heck is the government doing that This is a huge problem. All of these years later, I see a lot of people saying, Where's FEMA? Where's FEMA? Where's the help for us? Yes, it's you effect here is the class shape of deja vu all over again. But yes, In terms of the power situation, many of these people are reliving the misery and, frankly, the hell they went through after Katrina without power without any condition. Obviously, New Orleans is a warm place and even this time of the year Every day. It's it's in the nineties, mid nineties with the heat index well and well above 100. It's just miserable. You're sweating. You're frankly, your smelly. A lot of people haven't had a shower for a week or so. So, yeah, it's very difficult. Very little warm food is available. Virtually no stores are open a handful if they have a generator. Some of the grocery stores have reopened again on generator power. Again. Yeah, People are very I certainly not to the degree, the frustration and the anger they had after the train. I haven't sensed that with this, but at being said, give it another Whatever week or two for these poor people down here if they still don't have power and our conditioning, uh, they're gonna get pretty desperate. CBS's Jim Priscilla. Coming up reaction to the Texas abortion ban. That's next on the CBS News weekend. Roundup. I heart radio Earth is here with little tips for a healthier planet. Ask Geoffrey: Chicago's Old Passenger Rail Stations

"Chicago's old passenger railroad stations for decades acted as the city's front door where people from all over the country arrived seeking a better life or just the thrills of the big city. Jeffrey bayer takes us back to the golden age. Rail travel in this week's ask geoffrey. Hey geoffrey good to see you paris all right so we have a question from larry gardner of skokie he says. Could you do a story on the old train stations that once stood in downtown chicago. Well of course we can. There is as you mentioned. The the late nineteenth century the early twentieth century this was the golden age of rail travel when people traversed the country on trains. And of course right at the center there at the hub of it all was chicago. It's hard to believe. But as recently as the nineteen sixties there were six passenger train stations in downtown chicago today. All passenger trains that come into the city from beyond the suburbs. Go through the last one standing union station which is now owned by amtrak. It's designed including this now. Demolished concourse was right along the river there and the colonnaded main building which is still standing right behind it. In this picture of those things recall the grandeur of rail terminals in those glory days of designed to wow the traveler of the way many airports do today met with. Certainly the goal of another neoclassical designed terminal. Check this one out owned by the chicago and north western railway you know classical buzzards and it stood at what is today. Ogilvie transportation center which is operated by metra. That station included ornate concourses. Waiting rooms even dedicated spaces for barbers and hairdressers. People traveling across the country The chicago north western railway traced its roots to chicago's very first railroad. The galena chicago union established back in eighteen forty eight. By chicago's first mayor actually will be ogden. Certainly the golden age of travel there and then another key player. Of course you hear references pop culture all the time the illinois central oh absolutely That country that company billed itself as the main line of mid america. It was a dominant player. Both in passenger and freight rail their main passenger terminal was called central station once stood just just south of grand part right on the lakefront there. The railroad built this mammoth terminal in one thousand nine hundred three in part to accommodate the influx of visitors. That were expected for the world's fair that year you'll notice almost all of these terminals have clocks or clock towers so people hurrying to catch trains didn't have to fumble around for their pocket watches that of course they had watches it. All central station was also an important point of entry for many african americans who came to chicago from the south during the great migration with like so many of its contemporaries central station met the wrecking ball. In this case in the mid one thousand nine hundred seventy s amtrak diverted there trains to union station but there is still an active platform. Eleven street serving the metra electric line and i gather it's the inspiration for that residential development around their central station. Which i believe. Richard m daley lived there for a while and not to be confused with grand central station. Of course right. That's right and yes. We had our own grand central station. here in chicago. Not new york's wasn't the only one ours was at harrison and wells on the western edge of the loop. Read along the river for about eighty years. It was just north of if you know we're river city's development is today Traffic declined grand central after world war. Two this photo with the board of trade there in the background was taken in nineteen sixty seven at the end of the stations life. It was torn down in nineteen seventy one and this is one of several places in the city. were abandoned. Railroad land is being redeveloped during construction of the new development on this old site buried. Stones from grand central station were actually unearthed and they've been re purposed for a river walk. One chicago train station of actually is still standing So in addition to union station is dearborn station. South loop although of course. It's on train station anymore. You can see its clock tower visible all the way from the north side of lube looking south down on dearborn but what happened to the top of that clock tower. Take a look at this early photo. And you'll notice it once had this huge wooden flemish roof on top of it but in one thousand nine hundred twenty two. It caught fire. Look at these incredible photos from the scene as crowds gathered. Luckily firefighters were able to save the building. But but not that tower roof. I the nineteen seventy s. Most of the train. Shed was demolished but the facade and portions of the terminal were preserved as part of a mall. Serving printers row by the building is still called dearborn station. In fact peres as you just pointed out. Many old stations live on in the names of new developments of the one. You mentioned central station. Just south of grand park word. Mayor daley used to live and then a new apartment building at harrison and wells is using the grim central name

Walking the South Downs Way in England

"Welcome amateur traveler. I'm your host Chris Christensen. Let's talk about the south downs way. I'd like to welcome to the show. Aaron Miller from the Armchair Explorer podcast at Armchair Dash Explorer Dot Com. Who's come to talk to us about hiking? The south downs way in England Aaron. Welcome to the show. Thank you so much Chris. Pleasure to be here well Erin. Why are we talking about the south downs way? And can you put it on a map? I first of all I come from this area so I'm passionate about it. The South downs way is I think. One of the most beautiful but lesser-known hikes in England in the south of England. It's a hundred mile pot that stretches from east which is south of London right on the coast and it goes a hundred miles west to winchester and it's a beautiful route because it follows the spine of the south downs. The entire way on the south downs being a series of hills mountains hills. We're talking the south. Downs is beautiful gentle rolling hills that stretch of this way and into central English landscape. When you picture that quintessential Englishness that gentle rolling hills in arable farmland and old pubs little tiny villages and sheep and cows. Because you're on the spine of these down. This incredible view to one side to the south of you is the English Channel Sparkling Blue Sea in and then the other side is this wheeled. Which is this valley. That seems to stretch on forever. And IT'S COOKIE CUTTER. English field far as the I could say. And what makes this really special is? It's the national trail for south downs. National Park which is England's National Park. I think turns ten this year. So it's really a working landscape for like for your listeners. That come from the states or other places. I love the national parks in the states. I'm a huge fan right about them. A lot and most of them are obviously protecting. He's wild spaces. But the town's national park is a little different is actually a UNESCO biosphere reserve which is an award. That's not been given out to that many places and it's to do with the relationship between a land and its people and the sustainable relationship harmonious assistance between the ecosystem and the people that live there and have lived there and work that land for centuries thousands of years in fact. So what you get. Is this real sense of living landscape. It's not a national park which is devoid of people cut off from civilization It's a national park where people have existed for thousands of years the south downs way. In fact it's been walked for at least eight thousand years. Have records of that so when you in this room you really? Following in the footsteps of people that have worked for thousands of years. There's age hill forts. There's Bronze Age burial mounds. There's Roman history so you get a real sense of that as you will through an feel like that history and culture can imbue a place with debt when you're there you get the sense of this living landscape that is very typical of England's and very friendly in welcoming you're passing through these little villages and it's a little off the tortoiseshell because I don't think many international tourists do so when you coming off the trail to stay in these tubs or these different places overnight. You really stay in local One a drop down to this pub called the five bells and the local cricket teams in having their Green Tea and Gossiping About Pu. Bakes the best scones and all that sort of stuff. So it's really you're eavesdropping on this. Little World of the south of England and I think a lot of people when they think giving they think of the south of England to landscape inspired love artists over the years for everyone from Virginia Woolf in the blooms regroup to painters and musicians. So you really feel like you're walking through a landscape that has a lot of depth battle texture to it and there's a lot of great beer too so that was helps o'clock and one thing to know is when you talk about this being a national park in UK the UK Veasley being a smaller country than the US. Where I live doesn't have as many national parks. That only has fifteen so when you say. It's a national park. It's one of just over a dozen national parks in both England. Scotland and Wales altogether. So obviously fifteen are the fifteen best sites that were worthy of being named National Park. So where are we starting? So there's two options I started in Eastbourne which is on the south coast and made my way west from there and I did that for a special reason because when you do it that way there's a really great finish to the hike which I'll I'll keep his as a surprise for example a Lotta people choose to do it the other way round. It's the same elevation same difficulty. I think a lot of people choose to do it the other way round because when you begin winchester you slowly make your way closer and closer to the finish. This really dramatic finish walking towards east born in this place called the seven sisters. Which are these beautiful chalky cliffs that the White Cliffs of Dover the famous cliffs on the South Coast and these be bit as beautiful? I did it the other way and I also did it in a very fun way. I did it as a one hundred mile. Pub CRAWL

What's at Stake in the New Hampshire Primary?

"Joining us from Manchester New Hampshire this morning is Concord monitor political reporter Paul Stein Hausser great to have you back again the twenty wasn't twenty four now hours now before the polls opened what what are they open tomorrow at seven AM yeah most towns seven AM most close at seven PM some go till eight PM but it's it's you know ever after the caucuses last week for most Americans were back to normal I guess this is the primary it's a normal election to go in your vote it's not like a caucus though I think most Americans will be a little more familiar with how we do it here in New Hampshire yeah we've been talking about election security in the first hour here so any any sense from election officials in New Hampshire of what they've done in the wake of I would just sort of double check their systems yeah there has been a full force show of force here by the secretary of state's office bill Gardner the long time secretary state up here he had a news conference with the governor the Attorney General to reassure Americans that the results here should hopefully be controversy free these paper ballots up here in New Hampshire on on the voter in New Hampshire I thought my paper ballot and put it in and that's how it works up here it's a little old school you know what old school nowadays with all this hacking at all the history we seen the last couple of elections old school pretty reassuring isn't it we will tell our eyes he's been viewers and radio listeners that the C. span networks have lots of coverage today throughout the state so look for our schedule their C. span dot org and we mention the president also appearing tonight in Manchester seven o'clock tonight but Paul sign Hauser as you watch you wear in the state you think most of the candidates are trying to to focus and why well most of the population in New Hampshire is in the southern third of the state that's where the larger cities mostly are aids in closer to Massachusetts and and the sea coast and that's were mostly concentrated candies concentrate though nobody ignores going up north to the north country to the mountain the White Mountains but most of the population is basically from Concord south down to the Massachusetts wide enough for most of its campaign traffic is traditionally coming out of Iowa Joe Biden said that he took a quote a gut punch what's he been doing differently in New Hampshire he has been downplaying expectations and big time at the debate on Friday night he talked about how he took a hit in Iowa and he said I'm likely to take a hit in New Hampshire the next day on Saturday he had a news conference I was there I I asked him are you writing off New Hampshire any push back pretty vehemently but but it's pretty clear from what what Joe Biden says what what its campaign tells us reporters that they're not looking for a victory here they're looking to get out of your hopefully for them with a third place finish and move on to the more friendly climate the more diverse electorates of Nevada and South Carolina two states to follow to Hampshire providing South Carolina with that majority African American electorate on the democratic side that's his firewall he's hoping to escape here with a third place finish the polls indicate that might happen but Hey bill in may not in addition to Joe Biden who do you think has the stands the most to gain and the and the like wise the Lok most to lose from the New Hampshire results yeah that's a great question first of all Bernie Sanders the poll suggests he's going to win here but you know what that's expected he's the senator from neighboring Vermont right across the Connecticut River he won here big as he was a huge four years ago when he be the eventual nominee Hillary Clinton by more than twenty points so he's expected to win and if he wins I don't think it's any huge bump out of that because again he's expected to win people does it has a lot on the line here of course he surprised everybody in the political world with that I guess you'd call it a victory but by this this this much right though Bernie Sanders also claiming victory in Iowa but for booted yes now the expectations are much higher and if he doesn't come through well then that is an issue he's been getting some extremely large crowds these last couple days yesterday and all of his the events combined he had more than five thousand people which is a lot up here in New Hampshire so yeah a lot is on the line for him let's talk about Elizabeth Warren the senator from neighboring Massachusetts this is kinda almost home turf for her as well and there's a history of Massachusetts politicians running for president doing very well in Austin winning here thank John Kerry think Mitt Romney right so if she doesn't perform well here she comes out of New Hampshire limping like bite may come out of New Hampshire limping as well as he finishes fourth or fifth that's an issue especially providing because his campaign coffers are starting to get a little thin but for war also if she doesn't perform well here that is an issue which you will continue want and finalists hawk about eighty clover shark the senator from Minnesota one of the latest tracking polls here the Suffolk university poll for does the Boston Globe and WBZ came out late last night and it suggested that she has surged nine points over the last two days so we'll say bill I mean these calls may be accurate and they may not but if she has a big win here they give her a big boost if he doesn't perform here is that the end of the line for her and finally this talk about a couple the other candidates in an almost exclusively campaigning just here in New Hampshire making I guess you could say there for the final stance like senator Michael Bennet of Colorado all he's been doing is campaigning here told the gap or the Congress went from Hawaii and if Paul Patrick the former Massachusetts governor who's been campaigning here and in South Carolina if none of them perform well here well do they go on and finally I I I don't leave them out cause injury and was really rising for so many months but the a tech entrepreneur had a disappointing finish in Iowa he says New Hampshire is a natural place for him if he doesn't have a strong a word a

some extremely large crowds these last couple days yesterday and all of his the events combined he had more than five thousand people which is a lot up here in New Hampshire so yeah a lot is on the line for him let's talk about Elizabeth Warren the senator from neighboring Massachusetts this is kinda almost home turf for her as well and there's a history of Massachusetts politicians running for president doing very well in Austin winning here thank John Kerry think Mitt Romney right so if she doesn't perform well here she comes out of New Hampshire limping like bite may come out of New Hampshire limping as well as he finishes fourth or fifth that's an issue especially providing because his campaign coffers are starting to get a little thin but for war also if she doesn't perform well here that is an issue which you will continue want and finalists hawk about eighty clover shark the senator from Minnesota one of the latest tracking polls here the Suffolk university poll for does the Boston Globe and WBZ came out late last night and it suggested that she has surged nine points over the last two days so we'll say bill I mean these calls may be accurate and they may not but if she has a big win here they give her a big boost if he doesn't perform here is that the end of the line for her and finally this talk about a couple the other candidates in an almost exclusively campaigning just here in New Hampshire making I guess you could say there for the final stance like senator Michael Bennet of Colorado all he's been doing is campaigning here told the gap or the Congress went from Hawaii and if Paul Patrick the former Massachusetts governor who's been campaigning here and in South Carolina if none of them perform well here well do they go on and finally I I I don't leave them out cause injury and was really rising for so many months but the a tech entrepreneur had a disappointing finish in Iowa he says New Hampshire is a natural place for him if he doesn't have a strong a word a decent finish here what's next for him

Trump creates task force to lead U.S. coronavirus response

"The White House says there is no reason to panic about the coronavirus outbreak it has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization during an appearance at a manufacturing plant in Warren Michigan president trump mentioned the handful of Americans have been diagnosed with that virus people all recuperating successfully but we're working very closely with China and other countries and we think it's going to have a very good ending for so that I can sure you ABC's Karen Travers joins us from the White House good morning Karen good morning what else does the president have to say about corona virus well you know we haven't heard him talking on camera in a couple of days that he tweeted earlier this week after a meeting with its new inter agency task force it is being led by the health and Human Services secretary Alex aides are they're coordinating the trump administration's response to coronavirus president south down with it yet half court on Wednesday in the situation room and tweeted some photos and said we have the best expert anywhere in the world they're on top of it twenty four seven now I have two people who were involved in the Obama administration's Ebola response and they said that the president's message of it's all totally fine it under control then opposite of what the administration should be saying right now because this is a very dynamic situation remember when the president said that at the time he said one person coming in from China now we have four more cases and that first person to person transmission here in the country so it could change you could change quickly or could not develop into anything but that the importance of saying that two people to be prepared it's very critical at a time like this the president's been out on the rally circuits any highlights the president last night within do more in Iowa trying to get a little bit of that spotlight away from the democratic primary field today the head of the caucuses there he talked quite a bit about impeachment no surprise and brushed it off saying it's just impeachment light not really sure what that meant we back out but I think the fact that the acquittal is likely coming at some point by the end of today and then the president will use that so to rally his supporters as he said last night he went through a litany of what he said there is accomplishments and concluded it with you know can you believe it they impeached me we'll see how long that message has legs out on the campaign trail because you know I think one thing we all talked about over the last three years there's always something else coming in there's always another big headline do we know offhand whether the White House has been doing in the lobbying among Republican senators to try to get them to vote against witnesses it's a great question and we were asking if yesterday because it sounds like White House officials are you know we've seen the president legislative affairs team up on Capitol Hill all this week as the Senate has had this trial on going now the lawyers are the ones doing it but it's those people who have the relationships with Senate offices we were told that the president himself has not been doing it I think that that notable because one he is so invested in effort to team with other big policy pushes the president lobbying doesn't help the ones that need the lobbying at you know if if Mitch McConnell is trying to keep some of those key moderates the swing voters with the party the president reaching out to them isn't necessarily the thing that would push them over

"Francisco earthquake. No, not the one from nineteen o six caused by the San Andreas fault. This one was before that in eighteen sixty eight that's when a deadly quake struck along the Hayward fault in the East Bay and cake science editor Craig Miller says the next big shaker will most likely come from there again, and Greg I've always thought that the San Andreas fault would produce the next big one. Yeah. Most people do that. Actually, I think we can thank Hollywood for that. And I'm not saying that the San Andreas fault, doesn't pose a major threat. But if you think about the Hayward fault, first of all it tends to go off big about every hundred and fifty years, and it's are you doing the math here with me? It's been one hundred fifty years. So we're do you think about the Hayward fault is it's been described as the country. Most urbanized fault. It runs north and south down through the East Bay through all of the most developed densely populated areas. Not to mention major infrastructure like an airport railway as a major port. If it breaks with. Let's say a magnitude seven quake it's going to be a major event not just in the East Bay. But throughout the bay area and beyond. All right. So that's pretty scary. What's being done to prepare for it? Well, since the Loma Prieta earthquake back in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine somewhere between seventy and eighty billion dollars have been poured into retrofits and different types of resilience strengthening. But at the same time California's been very late in rolling out an earthquake warning system in the city of San Francisco, for example, has just begun cataloguing all of its tallest buildings and kinda valuating each one of them for their earthquake vulnerability. So we have a ways to go that was K Craig Miller. Tiffany

Thailand, Clark Hodges and Chiang Rai discussed on The Kristen Hagopian Show

"Do it now the twelve boys rescued from flooded caves in northern thailand made the two finger victory sign in their hospital beds major clark hodges was on that rescue team he joined the today show to talk about a rescue of this magnitude so as we look at missions like this we put them out on a risk matrix in this one due to the extreme physical hazards do the the fatigue hazards due to the factors if any equipment breaks down that's lifesaving equipment and it could have catastrophic results if that equipment doesn't hold up when you look at that on a risk matrix that comes out as being extremely high risk level and when you look historically anyone ever doing this there's no precedent that's been set we looked at this and we thought this has a very low probability of success and i felt like i was being optimistic when i told the governor of chiang rai when he asked that in my mind the potential chance of success was anywhere from sixty to seventy percent we were calling expecting casualties the multi national effort though actually absolutely knocked it out of the park everybody came together on this than if there wasn't teamwork coming from every single direction then this would not have been a success so far so good regarding the boys south down they will have to be in the hospital.
