"Lebatardshow. Welcome to south beach sessions. Wanted to do sort of a one subject south beach session here with somebody that i find to be uncommonly informed on the subject of climate change in a way it feels like we all should be but people just run away when they hear that phrase. It just doesn't seem anymore today like when you read about german floods wiping out villages or chinese subways filling to the halfway point with water and just all the things that are happening in places on fire record. Heat all over the place It seems fairly obvious and overt that we have a earth threatening climate problem and from that space at mackay who likes to make cool things and does creative. Things decided to make something that might be a comedy and might not might be hard to classify like his last couple of movies because he just went somewhere for six weeks to write this movie and it came very quickly to him and now he's made a movie. That is going to be on netflix here. Next month about climate change anyways all of which is to say out of..

Obviously and i just wanted to introduce the audience to you a little bit by graphically so thank you for being with us but let's start there when and how did you decide that you were going to try and make a go of it a hard way as an artist as a writer that is not an easy way to make a living no non especially back when you get into the business they the first of may tell you jay school was if you think you're going to make any money in this business. Think again go down to speak men holland goal Go into the business though. Go into the mba program. So now i mean to me. I think that I always felt like. There really was anything else. So i had to make a go of it them and i'm glad that it that it's worked out the way that it has but it certainly has been a circuitous route. What were the challenges early on. Well i think that the first thing you know growing up in in boston and then going to school in philadelphia temple university the the first challenge obviously was trying to figure out where you fit right. "Welcome to south beach sessions. We have been using this platform in recent months to introduce you to people who are working for metal arc media now and you know at this point. If you've been listening to our show that kate fagan has come aboard. We've made another announcement today tom. Haberstroh is also a part of metal arc media now officially you will hear from him on this platform and its story and how we got here. His biographical journey to us. And we're gonna do. Kate fagin story now with you because we're very excited to have her. If you haven't checked out journalistically just what she's done. In the last couple of weeks. For sports illustrated she wrote a cover story and she did a mystery crate for us on sue. Bird and megan repeat. Oh that's going to just elevate everything we're doing around here and her new book is called all the colors came out and a lovely tribute to her father and it's coming out today. We've promoted it way too much around here but you should read it. It's an easy read and it. We'll tell you more about kate fagan than maybe this interview will. But what made mattie run was also a new york times bestseller for her and so. We're just thrilled about the work. I believe she's gonna do the best work of her career right now because she's more ready than she's ever been. She left the espn because she was kind of bored by the daily minutia and so we chronicle her work there and what she aspires to here and the starting place on. This conversation is a charity that she cares about because the last time that we talked about this with her it tied into how it is that she left espn to go ten to her father at the end of his life and repair the things in their relationship that needed some healing. So kate fagan. We're delighted to have her aboard here. Here's part of her story. Though starting with wide as she's involved with that charity. Look you might think that the worst of it was a while we were on air. But i almost went to e r an hour later my wife had to say you're not going to the er for eating a pepper so i didn't go to the er but i almost did the so. There was a fighter flight. Moment there so you had to be talked out of it where you picking up the phone micro During a car and just looked at it. I was like i think i should go to the er. Because i the only time. I felt pain like that was when my appendix ruptured in high school. So i just was really scared that it wasn't gonna stop and she's the one that was like you just gotta you just gotta endure the pain any point being that. If you thought that it peaked on air it did not gonna do it again here for this south beach session right. I'd say goes pepper right reaper. Does kate not know that. We're going to air all of this about her struggles. That's going to be the starting point on her suffering that she almost went to the hospital. Because that's where we're starting with kate fagan. We're delighted to have her. Be a part of everything we're doing around here. Metal arc media dan. Lebatardshow was god's if you're not familiar with her work it is about seven years with. Espn espn w doing writing feature stories. Outside the lines and then her path took her elsewhere to write some books and do some other things and now she returns to sports and sort of sports. And the way we're going to do sports around here which is more sociological than it is sort of digging down on the granular thing. So we're happy to have kate fagan be part of everything we're doing here. You may have been introduced to her when she did the hot pepper..

Miami Beach imposes emergency curfew as partiers overwhelm city

"Reporting a party ending curfew imposed after fights, gunfire, property destruction and dangerous stampedes broke out among huge crowds of people in Miami Beach could extend through the end of spring break. Any beach commissioner is voting unanimously Sunday to empower the city manager to extend the curfew in the South Beach Entertainment District until least April 12, effectively shutting down a spring break hot spot in one of the few states fully open during the pandemic. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gilbert was on CNN today. Well, it feels in some ways like our city is a tender right now, you know where one of the few destinations open and so people are flocking here in huge numbers, you know, and it's not just about not wearing masks and physical distancing. It's also some of the folks that are coming are coming with bad intentions. Others Brawls and even gunplay. And when you have these levels of crowds you can't really manage unless you have enormous policing. And all that mixed creates a lot of peril and a lot of concern, and I do worry. I know all of my Colleagues in city government, and many of our residents are worried about it. So Mayor are you considering shutting down some businesses? What if you were to shut down bars for the next say three weeks? Well, last yesterday we had an emergency meeting and we way did just that in our entertainment area. We haven't eight p.m. curfew now. So it's closed out at eight p.m.. And that's what she saw. Where are police? Sort of trying to get folks off the streets? We've also by the way, taking the extreme step of closing down our causeways eastbound. After 10 p.m. at night just to stop the flow of people coming here, so all the local traffic and residents in hotel guests really will be able to come to the shore city, which is an island so it's you know, it doesn't feel Like there's there's real issues here of management. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gilbert today on CNN. The police in Miami Beach say they've arrested now over 1000 people, including charging 350. With felonies.

City officials voted to extend a highly unusual eight pm curfew for another week along. Famed south beach with the possibility of extending. Its well into april if needed and stressed. This isn't the typical spring break crowd. They said it's not college students but adults looking to let loose in one of the few states fully open during the pandemic law enforcement officers from at least four other agencies along with swat teams were added to help contain the raucous crowds. But it wasn't enough off. Local officials have struggled to enforce covid ordinances. Florida has no statewide mosque rules. No limits on capacity or other such restrictions. Courtesy of republican governor run descent pro business stance. Local officials and businesses have struggle to balance courting tourists to boost the economy while doing so safely amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic local residents complained. "So this is very exciting for me for a number of different reasons. Welcome to south beach sessions. Most special of these. I think that we have done in all the time. We've been doing them. I'm dan lebatardshow and my guest. Today is a partner and this is a bit of a love story here because this is a man who has been a bit of a mentor to me. A man who has cared about the same things. I've cared about a man who comes from privilege not at the earliest routes but at the top of espn is the most powerful executive in sports and he decided on his own to hand down some of that privilege to some minorities that he empowered. And then i in turn did it. Espn his work spiritually. He was an executive at rolling stone at the time when magazines were flourishing and when rolling stone embodied a certain spirit in america as literary man and educated man and for a really long time he was the most powerful executive across sports. He's also my friend. And someone i love because he has given me a great deal given my family a great deal of opportunity of belief because espn was under indexing with hispanics and they needed somebody hispanic on the air and so we created a television show in which i was not hispanic enough so we brought in my father's a cartoon character and he was extra hispanic and skipper would sit on the end of his bed and watch. That show is original programming that he had made for the network. Because he was trying to do things like playmakers pushed the boundaries. So i wanna talk to john skipper. My friend my mentor guy. Go into business with an i entrust with his beast of a thing that you guys have built and trust him implicitly. Because he's a man who i admire. I respect i love and he has done a great deal for me and my family. So i'm happy that last stage in his professional career and one of the last stages in mind that we would get to team up again and make content. Like you helped me make it. Espn for the audience. That does not know everything that we have in miami. That was taken nationally. Was done so by this man. He built this studio. He made it close to my house. I told him for many years. That i didn't wanna work for. Espn for many years. How can you make something more. Miami than what i got. I got an afternoon drive. Show miami. I'm the lead columnists i'm on. Pto your big show in miami. Make something more miami. You can't make something more miami. Okay lebron's getting there. Let's build a studio miami. Your data will do the show with your brother will do the art and you will hire your whole family. That'll make you more and we'll put it on ocean drive. How's that dan. Your defiant rebel..

"Time for us here at south beat sessions as this is our final episode. Under the espn umbrella. Many things have to go out to pg and anthony calatayud who were essential during our time here at espn and not just building out this brand the south beach sessions brand. But also the lebatardshow and friends network. There's so many people to thank on the technical end which is why push dan out of the way because he doesn't really have The technical background in this but just suffices say that this podcast doesn't get off the ground and all the creative things that we've done with laboratories and friends over at espn does not happen without the help of those two people primarily so i wanted to make sure we shouted them out before we got going here with our interview with big boy dana. Big boy become random friends so this one should be really good. I also want to thank ziprecruiter. The presenting sponsor of south beach sessions. Because they've been with us basically since day one. They've been a great partner weekend and week out. Ziprecruiter's always there for us with their support. So thank you so much to them. Let's get on with this. Big boy interview famously. One half of outcasts alongside. Andre three thousand dan big boy get into. Obviously he's time without cast which is still active. Even though they're not making music outcasts never broke up. We talk about big boys unique knack to stay away from all the drama in hip hop lot of drama in hip hop. You never see big boy's name attached to what we find out what's happened to the boom boom room. Those people that are sort of similar in age to me probably remember big boys amazing classic episode of mtv cribs where we all discovered the boom boom room. So real fun things there. You're going to enjoy this south beach sessions supplying one under our espn umbrella but do not fret. South beach. Sessions is going nowhere if you subscribe to south beach sessions. You'll be happy to know that new episodes that will continue once time with espn ends. We'll still show up on your phone. If you haven't subscribed to south beach sessions do so now. "And it looked like she'd been waiting her whole life to take care of this. Little girl stepped in whom it was all did you. Did you feel much in the way of regret or remorse? Like because you had or something just through an ignorance because you just didn't you didn't know you didn't know any better. You were just caught up. In the vanities that men get caught up in. It wasn't just that I don't want to say that you know I don't want to paint a picture that I was you know. No we're not getting married because I don't have. It was all happening. We just we met each other in our thirties. We you know we started late and we did try once we got married. We did try to have kids but by that point biology sort of taken over but yeah there we had CHICA. There were many times where I said boy if I could go back in time and do it all over again. I wouldn't have taken so long to get married and I wouldn't have had tried to have children in any which way now that's it turns out. Life is funny and a child list. I part of my life has been replaced with. I've got more children than I'm responsible for now. Ryan wasn't anybody I know. I know all fifty two of those kids all but six of them. I admitted which means I sat with whoever brought them in. Be It you an uncle or a friend or whoever was you know and had to decide on taking them and saying no to ten other children because that's our rate once you yes to one you say not ten others and you know. I don't take that lightly it's very solomonic. You know having to decide really in many cases who lives in dozen because the you know they're going back to a place where there's no food where diseases rampant where. There's no water where you could get. Cholera are or or Zeka or any malaria or any number of diseases very very easily and so I take every child that we bring in very very personally. I know the whole story. I you know I speak real now. As a result of being there and so I talked to them when they start with us when they're three years old two or three years old and they basically are being raised by our orphanage in the people there in me so I'm very involved with fifty two lives young lives all the way up to college. Age Kids all of that sounds overwhelming match. What you just described their sound. What do you mean it sounds totally overwhelming? Well everything everything in life if you throw yourself into. It can be overwhelming. And I'm sure your television shows radio shows you feel at the end of the day you're exhausted is overwhelming. You organize your day in the way that you need to now. I cannot do all the things that I used to do because I have to take care of these children you know so. I write a newspaper column but I don't write very many of them you know last year. I really am a part timer at best. I do a radio program but I get ten weeks off a year. You know which I said to them. I have to have this right. Can't do this anymore. And when I go to Haiti off the air you know because a main eighty every every month so you know things adjust and you make your adjustments for what's important in your life but if it's a joy and for me it is a joy to take care of these children to give them an opportunity and watch them flourish and we have. I mean Dan. It's I get to see Childhood in. It's real pure form. We have no computers. We have no Internet. We have no television. We have no radio. We have no headphones on kids heads or anything. There's no Pda'S NO A game. Boys were or whatever they're playing nowadays so the kids have no influenced from the media or TV shows or anything so you see children you realize that an eleven year old boy if you were to come down there with me and I walked in and they said this is my friend. Danny's he's a good guy you know what the boys would come up to you and one of them would take your arm and put your arm around them. He might be ten or eleven years old and realize realize that would never happen here because they've seen too many shows about how you're not supposed to do that at a certain age our your but they don't know so they're just affectionate and you know they come running whenever anybody walks in and they want to get to know them they have a million questions. I want them a picked up a thing at a toy store that that I'm always looking for little toys that I can get my bag and it was these little beads and it said when you put the beads into the water. They'll grow to be like ball. Small Ball size set. This is great because it's small. I can carry down. That will go so I bring him down. They all gather around and got the younger kids. I said all right. What's this magic? And I put beads in the water and nothing happens and the watching and two minutes four minutes five minutes ten minutes. Nothing happened so I. I'm sorry I didn't let me go back and look so I get the thing and I look on read it in. It says may take three to four hours I go. Why didn't I read this? Oh God so I said I'm sorry. Just forget it. You know. We'll come back later so I went out and did you know I stopped by all the business I have to do on the other side of the orphan and like three or four hours later a couple of the kids come running mister Mr Miss come come Kucuk. I said what the balls are coming in. They sat there the whole time. They never left. They just sat and watched these little things in the water until they blossom for three or four hours that kind of patients that kind of timing that kind of lifestyle we don't see here and so I'm totally blessed to have an opportunity to witness that and to revel in it You know and I do my best to try not to mess it up and so even though we have over the years we've put more and more money into it. We have better facilities in trying to help people help us. But we don't spend it on Internet access and you know and everybody gets a ipad or anything. That's that's not necessary. You know we spend it on schoolteachers in booed and and as a result we got some really pure amazing kids. I really appreciate catching up with you if people want to help you. That are listening to this if they want to help with some of these things because they feel moved by what it is that you're talking about how can they do so very simple. It's half eighth. Haiti Dot Org is the web site. Have Faith Haiti Dot Org? If they forget that that can always be my name. Dot Com Mitch ALBOM DOT COM and. There's a section on there for the charities that we operate in. They can go to that but we we welcome it in any kind of help. It takes a lot to run orphanage for fifty two kids and we need a lot especially now with the corona virus down. There we're on lockdown and it's breaking my heart because you know they have A. They have a a band so I can't lie in and I'm on the skype with them every day. And you know when it rips into Haiti. It'll go like wildfire because there is no protection there and you know you can't tell people to stay inside and you can't tell them to put their food in the fridge. They don't have refrigerators you know. They don't have freezers that everybody has to go outside everyday to get food and so it Wa- and there's the access to healthcare. I think I read. A statistic is one doctor for every three thousand people so You're talking about you know or one nurse even so it's GonNa really devastate that country when it takes hold a bit and I'm praying that our kids you know we've got ourselves locked down but we're GONNA we're GonNa need all the help we can get so people wanna go to that half eighty dot org and make any kind of donation we'd love. Mitch thank you. Say It's sincerely it's heartfelt. You have been an inspiration in every way because professionally. You were something to behold. But what you're doing. Now is a somehow more sizable than that. Which is a bit flabbergasting because many people would argue that. You're the best sports writer. There's been well I. I don't know about any of that. Dan but I I do know I appreciate talking to you and I really appreciate your giving me an opportunity to to a talk about our archives down there and she because the you know the world is full of a Lotta forgotten children and we don't have to all do massive things. Verb just does a little thing you know and the next person does a little thing. Next person does little thing it adds up. And we're living that now obviously and I've been aware of that for some time and so I appreciate the form to To share it. And it's good to see you in likewise will do this again soon. I hope we do this again soon. Good talking to you Mich. I'd stay safe down there right. That'll do it for us here on South Beach sessions this week. Thanks again to Mitch. "south beach" Discussed on Le Batard and Friends - South Beach Sessions

"L. O.. This is Dan Le Batard. And we have been remiss in south beach sessions in bringing you the side of another gender in Sports We've done only Jemele Hill on South Beach sessions and Danika Patrick and so I wanted to bring you someone who is unbelievable double at basketball She is part of the most dominant American Patriotic Olympic. Thing that we have Brianna Stewart is excellent at what she does us and despite that excellent can still be a struggle to make a living in the United States which is why she has had to go play in China and other places. Because America America doesn't value the dominance of women in sports the way other countries do so. We're GONNA talk to Brianna a little bit here and then afterward we're GonNa talk to Sarah Spain in as well because she's got some real expertise about the struggles. That women face in sports as they are really excellent and yet still have trouble bill drumming up value the way that Americans do the currency. Let's talk to Brianna Stewart pumped about this around here to have Brianna Stewart on South beach sessions with us because there's nothing in sports better than a little patriotism wrapping the things that you care about and the United States kick everybody's ass all over the world more than anything basically is in basketball. I don't think like. Do you have a rivalry. Brianna with the The soccer team because You guys are more patriotically. Excellent excellent than they are right. I wouldn't say survivor but we definitely support each other A lot well. What are the similarities? What are the when you support each other a lot because to arrive where you guys have? The Path is so much different than it is for men Brianna like it is so much different so there has has to be a kinship between you guys at the top of the food chain in those sports. Yeah I mean I think you see the way we prepare paracel represented ourselves and You know going and doing what we need to do When it comes time to to win gold medals mm-hmm and you know we're going for seven Olympic gold which is insane when you think about it like that but It's it's about making sure that every time we step on the court on no matter if the people change a little bit as a team where ready to dominate. Can you explain to us sort of what it feels like a to you emotionally just to wear the uniform for the United States Yeah I mean it's through houses God but you when you're NFC besetting and you have on the court and you look down and you have your say Written across your chest It's something that you dream of and you know I remember when I was a kid. My My base goes always to play in the Olympics to win. Go buttle because for me I can't I can't imagine anything better than playing the sport I love and represent at the highest level possible. You had a relationship right. You had a an intimate personal relationship with Kobe. Bryant wasn't just motivated from afar right yeah And I we had a relationship for sure. So what happened here and I'm sorry to make it news of the day on you because I really do want to talk to you about who you are how you are in the things that That shaped you but I am stunned. Brianna as I look across sports. It's not just football. It's you know Tiger Woods. It's a joker Jovic Vich at the Australian Open being mentored and just crushed by this and I'm curious what the last few days of felt like for you. We did have definitely been that very tough. I think. Obviously the news of Kobe's passing and G G and those other stuff victims was a shock to to the entire world and I think when the news broke and when I saw you know I didn't WanNa believe it just doesn't make sense like there's there's no way this could have happened and then when it was confirmed and type of thing it was you know and it was tougher on the reasons it was tough because we're with USA basketball right. Now and Kobe someone that is such a big supporter of women's basketball and he He's had a relationship with every single person on this team. And it's it's. It's still hard to come to terms with really but we had a game. The next day we played uconn which Kobe and g g were were avid. You can't supporters and there wasn't emotional night At the end of the day we knew that we had to get on the court and represent. It's not their legacy. What would you point to and say these things along my path when I was a youngster? They're the things that most helped shape who I become uh-huh and what I would change the way that I was raised. You know my parents instilling certain things and to me that they carried over into basketball. You know working hard being humble. I've had a lot of success in my career but you know continuing to to want to reach new heights just enjoying the moment. I think that sometimes we get caught up in all the other things that are going on and still having fun and what. I'm doing what were some of the things that you had to endure along the path that made it most challenging just adversity. You know you can never expect what's to come that type of thing. I'm coming off A ruptured Achilles so my first game back was on Monday. USA Verse Yukon. And it's just like getting getting through that being resilient and and realizing that you can't understand why everything happens. That's an awful injury that's a That's an injury. That's hard to rehab from two. That had to be terrible right all of it. Yeah I mean from from start to finish it was. It was a pain. Yeah when I did it I did it when I was playing overseas and You know I wasn't prepared for it. I wasn't cared for for. What was the calm and like you said you know? It's just a hard thing to rehab. The the Rehab is super tedious and the beginning. You can't do much and you can't walk on it. Obviously I couldn't walk for like twelve weeks And then that was just a lot of boxers that needed to be checked in order to kind of move the next round of Rehab. Do you have to play overseas and forgive my ignorance on this. Do you have to play Klay Overseas because the United States isn't good enough at supporting what you do here to put a value on it it's lucrative the WNBA and now we have a new CBA CBS where the salaries are going to be a little bit better but we have a cat and it makes it tough to compete with overseas where you know you can make a lot of money in a seven month period and sometimes we have to make decisions are for our best interest financially. I mean it's the same with you is offered courtesy a ton of money. You're not going to say no unless like it really doesn't work out with with what you're doing a wide or the other countries value more. What you we do than we do? I WANNA say they've value it more. I think that they don't have to have a cab. You know they don't have a a structure where it's like we can only used. Is this much money for our team. They can use as much money as they want. BECAUSE THEY WANNA win and they they're trying to you. Know make sure that their team and their the city is being represented really well. How much culture shock have you had in any of the Travel like that. You've had to do or the choices that you've had to make to take you outside of America I've had some basketball has has really taken me to a lot of different places and it's been an experience for sure. My first team that I played overseas I was can Shanghai. China and Shanghai is obviously a beautiful city but China is hard to compare it to the United States. Especially when you come over there as a foreigner and You don't speak their language so I would think that was like one of my biggest culture shocks because when you play in China you can only have one American so it was me and eleven other Chinese players and it may things interesting when you're trying to communicate. Well you gotTa tell me all of these stories stories though because it's not just that were you. I mean you're vastly more amazing than anyone. You step on a court with but when you and eleven a Chinese women when your your the powerhouse how lopsided was that team so everything gets to have one foreigner. But you know you're expected to do a lot because you come over there because you're one of the best and and expected to play at a high level for for the entire game and you know my two years in China we're not gonNA say anything about them and that way but it's it's tough on your body it's not the same it's like Wnba. Or when I was in college just because we had more resources to kind of help with your recovery and managing do things and you needed just some very basic things in order to stay healthy to care for your body the way any great athlete professional athlete would care for their body audience. Some of that was lacking. Yeah I mean it's just it's just a different world you know. We have a lot of resources in the United States and overseas. They don't always. I have the thing. I WANNA researchers. I would imagine Brianna though that it had to be pretty lonely. If you're the like not being able to talk to anybody stopping opting your craft Being great at what you do and being over there because the money's good like that's not how it works in the United States for men who are good at what they do as you all right. Yeah it was it was only for sure I mean especially so in China You don't get to go home for the holidays so I was over there for the Christmas thanksgiving And that's everything and that's that's one. It's the hardest because it's like you're not with your family and your in China by yourself. What difficulties did you have getting around? Because I couldn't get around Japan without a tour guide. I had no chance of doing that. Did you have some difficulty with that or did you have so. Did you ever translator yes. I had a translator so he made made life easier By the time it was my second year I kind of had a better understanding of of what was going on and how to get around. But it's I mean it's hard you know. The language is really difficult and obviously the symbols does and the altuva completely different. What was your motivation? When you decided that you were going to do an essay in the player's Tribune and that you were gonNA show Show people all of your vulnerability. What made you decide to do that? I think the biggest thing was it was three falls ago and The metoo movement was was just coming about. And you know I had this story that I wanted to share with people and I don't know one and what's the appropriate time to do it and then when that came about I was ready and I was ready as I could have ever been. You know still very nervous. Didn't like to make myself feel vulnerable in that way. But I wanted to be able to you know so people that Yeah I've I've done a lot of good things but other things have happened to me too and I and I'm still here and I'm still okay and and hopefully help people in that way when you say you wanted to share that and we're looking for the right time to share it. It self evident the article but for those who haven't read it. Can you explain why you wanted to share that. I mean I wanted to share it because it was time and I was overseas in China when I was doing the article and when I posted it and writing about my story on being a victim of sexual abuse it was an appropriate Britt time in our lives and you know with everything that was happening in society and then the world and the me too movement I you know was this kind of encouraged by the other victims. who were speaking up and ready? You were inspired that. You didn't have to be alone with that anymore. Correct and not only. Did you not want to be alone with that anymore. You were going to share it with everybody because you didn't want to be alone with it. Yeah I mean the people that were close to me. Were aware of what I went through but it was just something that I wanted to to show my my whole true self the world and you know it wasn't something that I was hiding. It just wasn't something that I hadn't said and I was ready to say Kinda make it Known to everyone. I'm curious because these things are so damaging Brianna they are they end up shaping you ways known and unknown when you've gone into the depths of examining the way that that has altered you and what it is that you you had to do to overcome that. What do you come away with? I know it's a broad question and that encompasses a lot. But this has to have something to do with shaping your world view. Yeah no I think I think it's it's definitely something this shape me and you know what happened to me when.

"south beach" Discussed on Le Batard and Friends - South Beach Sessions

"This is South Beach sessions and I'm the executive producer of south beach sessions. Mike Ryan Dan last week. We had billy ray Cyrus on and it was just a bunch flash paper. It was fun. It was inside. He was a laugh riot this week. We're talking to a mathematician. That's right. We're going to slow it down. The pace was too fast last week. It was crazy billy ray Cyrus <hes> I just wanted to talk about Pete Rose and nothing else and so I said I wanted to be a little more elevated with the discussion and this dude has fascinated me for a long time. He's a former offensive. Lineman who is now a mathematician and we're talking about one of these high end indeed mathematicians where he does math. Maybe not good will hunting type math. Maybe not beautiful mind type of math but he knows a great deal about complexities and mathematics that I'm sure you guys don't think you're interested interested in as we start this because people hate math but I do think you're GonNa find this guy interesting where he makes it to the top of football he makes it to the top of math and he seems to like math a lot more than he liked football and the degree of difficulty on both of those things is very high so it does matter fun on. He does math because he wants to get better at math what that's right. What what's the endgame game is to be great at Matt? That's the end game so tell the people about the sponsor sponsor. I'm telling you what we want to do with these south beach sessions is very umn. You don't know what's common <hes> and this one. I'm telling you even if you're not interested in math just like perhaps you weren't interested in m._M._a.. When we talked to Ariel Awani even even if you're not interested in math I think you're gonNA find interesting that this guy rather do a math problem then be with his wife sometimes because his wife understands him understands that he's an unusual mind and understand that he can spend nine hours with a problem and not notice her which is another kind of problem? Different property is going to have to deal with later in life but right now. He says his wife loves and understands him so let's get to that Dan. Sometimes you want to hire somebody. That's good at math and you know where you go. ZIPRECRUITER DOT com slash beach. Thank you for answering the question Chris Cody. I've noticed on the on the mystery CREPE podcasts. You're getting pretty good with the AD libs. I was curious where you meant well. It is very challenging. I'm talking about hiring to find qualified candidates. It can sometimes take a very long time too many applicants Pinson the whole deal ziprecruiter makes it easy go to ziprecruiter dot com slash beach multiple job sites they sack these resumes and it's confusing review process but today iron can be easy and you only have to go to one place he aforementioned.

You would have said what to me? Yeah. I know I I got played on outlaw country last week. I guess in rotation. Yeah. Wasn't going for all country. I was just going for kind of an honest bear bear record. I don't know what I would have said to thirty years ago. It might have been unintelligible. You didn't know who you were. Then right. I was trying to figure it out. And I was thirty years ago. I was kinda stuck in a wet cardboard box that I couldn't quite punch my way out of with the drinking and the drugs and found my way out and it's been a sea chain since I turned thirty says I got sober. And you explain to us where it is that you ended up deciding look I need to fix this. I can't have my pancreas blowing up. I can't have I need to fix this. Was there a moment that that decision? Got me. Yeah win. My pancreas did love that was kind of after I was taken to triage at at at northwest hostile Seattle, and the pain was so bad with that that I truly I did I wanted because they had morphine enemy, and they had all kinds of stuff, and it wasn't working. "South beach sessions presented by ZipRecruiter. Ziprecruiter, the smartest way to hire. Blow wits. Dan lebatardshow? Thank you for supporting the things that we're doing at lebatardshow friends. We're gonna be growing it out over the next year lot of different content and a lot of different places. And and friends is going to be about talking to our friends, and my relationship with standing Gundy goes back a long way if began really with him calling to just rip the holy shit out of me because of a column that I'd written, and he didn't like the fact that I was saying in print as he was knocked out of heat management. I was saying in print that STAN Van Gundy himself would tell you that Pat Riley was a better coach than he was. And so I got the phone call of right in that don't write that anymore. Stop writing that. And so since then I took that beating and I and I listened to him and we've become friends over the years, and he's a person that I admire who has been made miserable by coaching by being an executive and yet the addiction of it. He keeps returning to it. Even. So he's happier. When he's not a part of it. So stand van Gundy's interesting. And he was honest about his time in Detroit. But before we get to that Mike Ryan tell the people about are presenting sponsors. So the official watch of the NBA and each one of those time pieces delivers quality performance, which traditional luxury the tea, so krono exiles a great watch for those looking for a sporty krona graph with Swiss acknowledgee at an unbelievable price. Shop T, so a U S dot T. So shop dot com that's elect watch and jewelry stores nationwide. So let's get to stand Van Gundy. Here he is as I said, he's become a friend. And we need you to rate. Subscribe and review to support the stuff we're doing around here. Here is STAN Van Gundy. I love this, dude. And I've loved him for a long time. But our relationship started in a funny place, actually, remember where I was I was in a coffee shop in New York. Talking to stand in Gundy on the phone, and he was really mad about a column that I'd written. He just told me and from right, then on no lie. I don't know if you remember this. But yeah, my respect for you is only grown since then. But you the fact that you called me and and just let me up at a nowhere. I think at the time you weren't. I don't think you were even working. I think you might have been an assistant coach you remember any of this. I do vaguely. I mean, I remember the the thing that I remember about it was same thing is is I gained respect for you. Because in my experience at least up to that time. And a lot of my experience Simpson is some of the most sensitive people in the world to to criticism are journalists. They like doing criticize. Thing and and went to be immune from criticism. And that wasn't you at all like you were finding gauging in that. And and listening to what I had to say. And I remember telling people immediately after that, the two were a lot different than than anybody that I dealt with two are a lot different than anyone I've dealt with in that you have such a unrelenting zeal about truth about being honest that you can't get out of your own way in terms of fines or saying things that you shouldn't be saying seriously. And it's something you've never been able to conquer. And it's something you, and I've talked about for the better part of ten years as you've been find how much money over the is. Because you can't keep your mouth shut on stuff. Well, I'll tell you what I've certainly been find enough money that I could've paid at least a couple of my kids tuition through college. So why wouldn't you just shut up stand? Like, why would why don't wouldn't have been known that? That's something that a lot of people that are around me. You know, just can't get over. And I don't really know. Like there have been a lot of times in my in my life. And even said it to you at times that now I'm just not gonna talk. I can do that. I can just devoid. All interviews. You know, especially when I'm not coaching just no, I'm not gonna do anything. But when I'm on and faced with the question. I just I mean, okay. Generally, no, comment and stuff. But I have a hard time doing that. As you know. I mean, I get a question. And my first instinct is I'm just gonna answer it and answer it the best way. I know how now I'm more guarded with teen type information like I'm not going to be critical very often with the media with my players. I'm not gonna say a lot of things that would make somebody look bad that I've coached or worked with but as far as the pinions on issues and things like that. And
