"Goes from 200 to $400. So for example of your Live like another community where you have a cold a sack and you're trying to get out of your driveway and you drive. The bus is more in the middle of the street and you drive up on the grass to get around it, And that's the situation we're talking about, because they want to stop people from endangering these Children. They're trying to get off the bus and get back to their home safely. Any other big ones that went to affect this past Friday. That will really have an impact on the state. Well, the biggest one, I think is the Ford the big change before his minimum wage system, So we're now in the amendment has taken place that was passed. In 2020, increasing gradually the minimum age minimum wage into $15 an hour by 2026. So the initial bump that people got was just, you know, mere pennies went from 56 an hour. 8 65 an hour But looking forward to September 30th. You'll see another bump to $10 an hour and it'll go up $1 every year until we hit that $15 an hour. And this is another one where it's. There's there's benefits and its consequences because obviously we want wages to go up. Businesses push back on this because they said, Look, we're not gonna be able to pay people. $15 an hour, especially this was passed before the corona virus outbreak. So this is another factor that no one saw it coming. So that's one way of looking at it. But then people that in the fight for 15 movement It really drove this amendment here in the state of Florida. They say they agreed it would be a gradual increase of wouldn't have such a direct impact on businesses because other states that have just Kind of randomly cities like Seattle. They randomly increase their minimum wage to $15 an hour. No warning, and that put a lot of businesses in real distress in this that he ended up having to repeal the law because it was deemed to be unconstitutional. So this is a phased roll out. Like I said, So I think this is something that's gonna be a long term. You're not gonna see the initial Impacts of it, but I think it'll set up the structure Where maybe down the road, you'll see bigger increases as we get into more of an economic recovery from the coronavirus. You're the face rollout certainly helps. So you're not hitting all these businesses over the head with this massive increase that they just wouldn't be able to handle and you know, down the road when the increases really start toe kick in and hike up the minimum wage. The economy might be in a much better place than it is right now coming off of this pandemic, But I think the big issue here with this minimum wage hike in Florida is that you have different areas and $15 minimum wage in Miami Dade is much different than in some of your more rural county. Some of your smaller counties like a Citrus county to the north of our listening area, So that's the part of it. That didn't make a lot of sense to me because you've got different locations across the state, where an increase in the minimum wage means much much Different things and could be much harder to absorb, and that's where you could see some problems. But then they're certainly gonna be some benefits for people who are in areas mainly or more metropolitan areas where it's easier for businesses. To absorb that increase. I want to take a look ahead to the upcoming legislative session and some issues that could become laws that going to affect a year from now. What's one that you think is going to be front and center one it ties into a lawyer went into effect on January, 1st was Greyhound racing ended in the state of Florida. So that is now setting up a bill that was introduced by Senator Jeff Brandis of ST Petersburg to legalize, um betting, sports betting and so a lot. These parent mutual's had to close down their racing portions. They've been looking for ways that they can stay. In business with gambling and having certain gaming situation. So what he's passing. He introduced this bill, which has been introduced twice before, But I think now the way that the gaming system in the state of Florida is going to emerge again related to the coronavirus once everything starts to open back up again that this may get some more traction. The benefit that he built into it, which I thought was actually really smart is that he would turn they would turn over the licensing of the para mutuals and the tracks and the clubs to the lottery officials so the money that they would get from the licensing For all these sports betting places to open up that would all go to the education, much like the lottery's been doing for the past 30 some odd years, so I think that's where he's going to get support. Mean tying the where the funding is going to go from the revenues that, though make from licensing all these sports betting establishments and the individual owners, and that may be a carrot for the other side to say, Yeah, we can go along with us now. Obviously, they've built in rules or he's built in rules to this bill, where you can't have people that are directly connected with sports team and this goes down to you. Even like the high school level aware of its athletes, coaches, anyone that runs a sports program or any officials. They're connected to it. They would not be allowed to place bets and they could face serious penalties if they were in fact exposed to do that. Well. I've been saying for a while. Now there are two things that are coming eventually. It's only a matter of time. It's it's a matter of when, not if, and that's the legalization of marijuana, the recreational use of marijuana that will come again just a matter of when and sports betting, because these are two things that especially when states really could use the revenue and we're still getting a sense of what the revenue. Shortfalls are gonna be like because of the pandemic. But you've got states that they're looking for different ways to raise money to pay for the things that they need to pay for. And you've got two areas in marijuana, legalization and sports betting. That really offers them a new revenue stream and they're gonna take him and they're not Neither One of those. If you take a look at the polling is something that Majority of Americans are against, and I mean the numbers on marijuana have completely changed and sports betting. For the most part, people don't really care. And they've gotten Maura Maura used to the betting aspect anyway, because of the different ways that you could do fantasy sports leagues, fantasy football, all that kind of stuff, which is basically kind of like Betting in a lot of circumstances, so it's coming. It's just a matter of when and it could be this year. This is something that maybe it will get through the Florida Legislature and 2021. Yeah, they have ah, kind of a mechanism. They already figured out that they were going to let the Seminole Tribe of Florida kind of regulated as well because they have obviously the biggest sports betting system in the state of Florida. They tried to do come to an agreement in the 2019 legislative session with the tribe when they were trying to get this bill passed. It didn't really the agreement really didn't get hammered out. I think this is new incentive for them. Try again because of why this is going to come down like you made a very good point about revenue streams and getting the economy growing again. And for like the former Greyhound track owners, they've got to find a new business to get into it and rethink how they're going to move forward, so this would give them a leg up number one to help them still survive and stay open because Look, you got Derby lanes over in ST Petersburg. They ended racing. I think the week before the new year started, but they are gonna have to re imagine what they're going to do now with that facility. And if they can't stay open, that's prime real estate to put. God knows what may be a new race stadium. Maybe our legal correspondent Felix Vega with this first report of the new Year, Felix. Thanks for the breakdown. I will check in with you again tomorrow. Happy New Year, Right. Still to come this evening, 12 things turning 100 years old in 2021. You're not gonna wanna miss that. "We saw a lot of travel during Thanksgiving, and they expect Justus much during Christmas and New Year's for more on all these guideline adjustments will speak to Joel Achenbach, Science reporter at The Washington Post. Now, this is a little complicated, so I'll do my best. And you know this is a science based Decision, but it's also one based in how two people actually behave. They felt that anecdotally they were hearing from the various public health agencies. You know, the county health Department. Hey, people are not cooperating with the quarantines. They're not doing it. So keep in mind. Let's say you've become exposed to the virus. That's when you get quarantined. Not that you have it. Not that you're infected, but you might have it. You get identified? Do contact tracing. You were at the party where someone was known to have the virus. The health Department says Okay, you gotta quarantine for 14 days. Well, what happens is people they don't want to do that for 14 days. It's too long. They're gonna miss work. They're gonna lose their job. Maybe they need the money, and it creates a kind of a lack of cooperation, a lack of compliance, So they looked at it and said, OK? What if we make it a little bit easier? We'll still get capture. Most potential infectious people will make it a little bit easier will give two alternatives. One is 10 days. If you monitor symptoms every single day and never have any symptoms. You're supposed to make sure that you don't have a fever don't have a cough aren't fatigue. The second thing is, you can cut it to seven days if you have a negative Test within 48 hours at the end of that seven day period. Does that make sense? Yeah, definitely. And you know, this is kind of what a lot of people were probably doing already keeping quiet about it. Let's see if I have any symptoms, if not I'm all good in their heads right? Because they want to avoid this very strict 14 days. As you mentioned for a lot of people they could miss work. They could lose out on a job. A lot of stuff like that. So definitely it makes sense that they could reduce it that way. But it also depends on testing. You know, you've got to make sure you get tested in the right period of time. I didn't ask this. And they clarified that either of the two main kinds of tests can be used in that last 48 hour period, either the rapid response Aunt Aegean test or the PCR test. The PCR is more accurate but takes a little longer to get the result. You sometimes a couple days or more than three days, but You know, to some extent, like you said, People are doing what they're gonna do. The government is not going door to door checking on people. Lot of this is voluntary, but the contact tracers. I mean, they're trying to do their job. They call someone up and say, Hey, you know, we think you may have been exposed. People don't answer the phone when they get a call from the health department, Okay. I don't want to know that I don't want to be part of this system settled. They're trying to get better compliance. This eases the burden on the health department and it's a little more realistic for people and it will still capture probably 95 to 99% of the cases.
