"Liotta, who played the lead in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, also struggled to avoid typecasting, as did Paul sorvino, who played his mentor in the film. Why would I want to get into that? Just don't do it. I want to talk to you about Jimmy. You got to watch out for him. And the once a gangster always a gangster thing didn't just happen to featured players quite a few of serving as Goodfellas henchmen found steady employment with suburban mafioso Tony Soprano a decade later, including Paul Herman, who played beansie. This maniac. Right from the Zeppelin standpoint. And Tony sirico, who played walnut sculpture. He would have been done. Still, this wave of modern mafia epics was just that, a wave that crested with The Sopranos, almost two decades ago. There are still occasional mob stories with Italian faces, but in recent years, a more egalitarian Hollywood has turned its attention to African American anti heroes. Asian cybercriminals, drug cartels from Latin America, and as the mafia recedes, so eventually must its interpreters. Do you ever feel like nothing good was ever going to happen to you? Yeah. And nothing did. So what? I'm alive. I'm surviving. All 5 of these actors still robust and working at the start of this year are now gone, which is perhaps unsurprising in actuarial terms, but still comes as a shock. We tend to freeze actors in the roles we best remember, Khan was in his early 30s when he made The Godfather, young, vital. What the hell is this? It's a city of message. But it's now a half century later. Leota was in his 30s, serving of RICO and Herman in their 40s and 50s

His publicist, roger Neil, said he died Monday morning and Indiana of natural causes. Our hearts are broken. There will never be another Paul sorvino. He was the love of my life, and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage. His wife, didi sorvino, said in a statement. In his over 50 years in the entertainment business, sorvino was a mainstay in films and television, playing an Italian American communist and Warren Beatty's reds. Henry Kissinger and Oliver Stone's Nixon and mob boss Eddie Valentine in the rocketeer. He would often say that, while he might be best known for playing gangsters, his real passions were poetry, painting, and opera. Born in Brooklyn in 1939 to a mother who taught piano, and a father, who was a foreman in a robe factory, sorvino was musically inclined from a young age and attended the American musical and dramatic academy in New York, where he fell for the theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1964 in bajor, and his film debut and Carl Reiner's where's papa in 1970. With his 6 foot four inch stature, sorvino made an impactful presence, no matter the medium, in the 1970s he acted alongside Al Pacino, and the panic in needle park, and with James Caan in the gambler. Re teamed with Reiner and O God, and was among the ensemble in William Friedkin's bank robbery comedy, the brink's job. In chanji avildsen's rocky follow-up, slow dancing in the big city, sorvino got to play a romantic lead and use his dance training opposite professional ballerina and ditchburn. He was especially prolific in the 1990s, kicking off the decade playing lips and Beatty's dick Tracy, and Paul Cicero and Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, who was based on the real-life mobster, Paul verio, and 31 episodes on dick wolf's Law & Order. He followed those with roles in the rocketeer, the firm, Nixon, which got him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and boz luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet, as Juliet's father, Fulgencio capulet. Beatty would turn to sorvino often, enlisting him again for his political satire, bulworth, which came out in 1998, and his 2016 Hollywood love letter rules don't apply. He also appeared in James gray's the immigrant. Sorvino had three children from his first marriage, including Academy Award winning actor Mira Sorvino. He also directed and starred in a film written by his daughter Amanda sorvino and featuring his son Michael sorvino. While he learned that Mira Sorvino had been among the women allegedly sexually harassed and blacklisted by Harvey Weinstein in the midst of the hashtag me too reckoning, he told TMZ that if he had known, Weinstein would not be walking, he'd be in a wheelchair. He was proud of his daughter and cried when she won the best supporting actress Oscar for mighty Aphrodite in 1996. He told the Los Angeles Times that night, and he didn't have the words to express how he felt. He said, they don't exist in any language that.

Tens of thousands of people who evacuated Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region are risking their lives to return to homes close to the front line. Western intelligence says inconclusive fighting continues in both Donbass and curzon. Part of the reason for that, Russian commanders have to decide whether to fight, to take more territory or a defend the territory that it has. They don't have enough troops to do both. "What an experience for them. I mean, our problem was that like some crappy hotel on the middle of the wear, you know? That mirror sorvino starred in it. You know, throw me and Michelle are whatever. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, and so anyway, so here they are for dancers together and then these two other guys. And I just thought, if they don't dance at prom, I'm gonna be ticked off. Sure. They gotta show off their stuff. I know. So anyway, so but that's not their style. They're very humble kids. But John told me the next day, he said, mom, no one was dancing. So he in this other gal went out and started dancing. And started everybody off. That's so cool. Was it like, I mean, do they dance to is it? Like, I don't know, what is it? What kind of music are they dancing to at first? What was their first? I asked him that. He did not remember. They did not have a prom theme song they did not have king and queen. And so but he also then he said he got pulled into the center of many dance circles. That's cool. Like being in the concert, kind of. Yeah, yeah. So, you know, I would have paid good money to be a fly on the wall there. Did they have parent chaperones? They didn't. Oh, you know I would have been first in line if they was going to say. I'm surprised you didn't sign up for that. Yeah, no, so there were no parent chaperones. So yeah, so he just had a really, really good time. And as I was taking him over for the photos at one of these gals houses, I was like, really revel in this. This is in person. We are not locked in. This is IRL. Right. That's so cool. What a special memory in weekend. Night. I mean, we can that's awesome. It was really, really. It just filled my cup overflowing, overflowing. So it was fantastic. Yeah, I got some good pictures. Good. Yes, yes. So.

"We find ourselves in another movie altogether. It's a different movie altogether. It's a very dark, very scary movie, and it's all because of Rayleigh Otis face and his menacing voice. Because never for a single second, and this is even true when you watch the movie a second or third or fourth time, never do you stop believing that this guy on the screen is a stone cold killer. Capable of anything at any time. You never think, oh, what a performance. You know, a good actor like Ray Liotta doesn't give you time to think. You can't stop watching him. You can't stop being scared. I've often told people if you're in a movie theater, if you don't have time to tap somebody on the shoulder next to you and go, boy, this is really a good scene. It ain't. It ain't a good scene. If it's a good scene, you can't stop watching. And Rayleigh yo this charming menacing and charming, how do you do that? Psychopath, sociopath, but the mental illness he has isn't really the issue at hand, labeling him, his name was racing, Claire in that movie. It doesn't make him any less terrifying. So yeah, well I saw a raise performance in Goodfellas. I loved it. I think that lost it now and then and more or less forgot that this guy was an actor in a movie. He's very good in that film, but Henry hill is a bit of an asshole. The real joy of Goodfellas is staying a step or two ahead of the film the whole way. We know he's going to screw up. We know it. Just a question of how and when and given a part like that, ray Leonard is going to turn in a fine performance, but there's no room for menace in Henry hill. And menace is what Rayleigh is all about. That's why, as much as I love Goodfellas, you've got to see something wild. So when people eulogize Ray Liotta, for his performance and Goodfellas, I'm not going to complain. But I'm going to be thinking about if you really want to see how totally great this guy could be, how he does that thing that only great screen villains know how to do and make you simultaneously scared shit and yet unable to stop watching the screen, then you gotta watch something wild. It'll teach you everything you need to know about just how great ray liota was. More than any other role in his long and impressive acting career Ray Liotta will be remembered for his work in Goodfellas, obviously. He will live on forever in Martin's crusades crime drama as Henry hill, the young Italian American man who grows enamored with the local mafia while growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950s. You know, there was a bit of a Jew in him as well. But you can't forget the story, the money he makes, the bonds he forms, the lathe is his life completely changed and unraveled in the pursuit of power. It is considered one of the best films of all time. It has to be. De Niro Pesci Bronco, sorvino, it's hard to narrow it down, but there are some of the best quotes in the history of movies in this movie. When I was dating a girlfriend named Karen, who lived in Staten Island without around the corner from Sammy the boulevard, you know, we were obsessed with Goodfellas. We spoke to dialog all day long. Karen Tito lived around the corner from Sammy the bull gravano and we drive by the house and this is when things were really happening bad with him and John Gotti and people wrote rat across his garage door. And all we could do all day, me and her and my friend TK and her girlfriend, Michelle. We saw that movie three nights in a row in the theaters. Now the guys got Pauly as a partner and he problems he goes to Pauly. Trouble with the bill, he can go to Pauly. Trouble with the cops deliveries, Tommy, he can call Pauly. But now the guy's gotta come up with Pauly's money every week, no matter what. Business band fuck you, pay me. Oh, you had a fire, fuck you, pay me. Place got hit by lightning, fuck you, pay me. I mean, it's some of the best writing of all time. Anything I wanted was a phone call away. Free cars. The key to a dozen hideout flats all over the city. I bet 20, 30 grand over a weekend and I'd either blow the winnings in a week or go to the strongs to pay back the bookies, didn't matter. Didn't mean anything. When I was broke, I go out and rob some more. We ran everything. We paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. We paid off judges. Everybody had their hands out. Everything was for the taking. And now it's all over. And that's the hardest part. Today, everything is different. There's no action. Have to wait around like everyone else. Can't even get decent food. Right after I got here, I added some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I'm an average nobody. Gotta live the rest of my life as a snook. Those words in those scenes that Ray Liotta did in those movies, especially Goodfellas stayed with me forever. And when I wrote my screenplay for 74 and sunny, I wrote it with Ray Liotta in mind. And a year or so ago, I got my screenplay to him to read as playing my father, and that's not an easy thing to do, but I went through a mutual friend and he said, I can let you talk to ray. I said, look, there's no money yet for the movie, but I want him to read the script. It'll mean the world to me if he thinks he'd like to do it. It's never an easy thing to do. It's typically a thing that actors dislike, you know? I'm reading this and there's no money attached. Why am I wasting my time? I know, but see, if you like it, then that would help us possibly get money attached. They know it's the whole game. So we got together and I handed him the script at vitello's restaurant. The place where Robert Blake allegedly killed his wife. A week or so later, he calls and says to me, there's some really good stuff in here. I want to ask you because I think it's only fair. Do you think I can play your father? I said, yes, that's why I gave it to you. Only you and annabelle sciorra have the script. I see you as my mom. I use my dad and her is my mom. And he liked that. And he said, he said, well, whenever there's money attached, come back around and find me and we'll make it happen. And now that can't happen, can it? Either way, right? I hope you're not getting ketchup with egg noodles wherever you are now. And I hope to see you in the corn pound. And that's it for today. I'm AJ benzer. It's been a great night. We've seen a lot of stars here at The Shining veil event Courtney Cox Mira Sorvino. So right now we're going to send it back to you Justin and tell us what you got. I got a crush on you, Greg, can you hear that's what I got? Who doesn't? Do you guys believe in ghosts? Yes. I had a personal experience with one once, which is too long of a story, but yes. Me too. I didn't until this. Wow. What about you? I totally believe in him. And I've had my own experiences with them. I, yeah. They're there. We do a whole other show with these people. You know the ghosts don't like to come to my house because I have a rule. Yeah. If you got a haunted, you gotta pay for it. Give me half that ring. I like it. Have you ever gone anywhere where it's haunted? Yes, everywhere, but by the way, I sleep through it. I'm sure lucky. I used to. Knock on wood. Yeah. It's time for around of would you do it. Chelsea handler celebrated her 47th birthday butt ass naked. She shared this video of herself skiing topless. Would you do it? Absolutely, I would do it. I totally would. Because to me, this isn't about, you know, and I'm whatever ten years older than her. This isn't about look at me or look at my body or anything. To me, this is about, I'm free to be me. And I accept everything about myself and I enjoy everything about myself and this is as free as I can be. And I love that spirit and that's what this is to me, so I would do it. But I'm not sure anybody would want to see it. I don't know that I would shoot a video of it. I think people would line up to see it. Get you an only fans. But let me ask you this question. Would you have done this at 37? Did you feel that free and that empowered at 37? I personally probably didn't. Like I think it's taken me this long to get to a point where I don't really care as much about what other people think. You know what I mean? And I sort of understand what do I really enjoy who am I really? What's fun for me, like that sort of selfish anger. Yeah. I love you, Terry. Oh my God. There's so much more for that. Yeah, I never say no to a streaking event. I actually never have. I probably should have when I was younger and even at my age, but I would so do that. It's so interesting. Yeah. Because to me, I never do streaking or anything to be like, look at me and all this stuff. It's purely out of fun, lost in the moment, free spirits. So I like that. That's great. This is a kind of moment that I always look at things like on your deathbed on your deathbed will you be sorry you did such and such and such. This is not, this is you will never be sorry on your deathbed that you had this experience. No, but look at the lady body. Like, the female body is pretty everybody wants to see a brass. You wouldn't do it? No. Have you seen like, if you really look at what's going on down there? And I appreciate that. Like, what's going on down there? But it is not pretty. But it's comedy. Yeah, yes. In the cold. It would be comedy in the cold. A lot of laughs. It's the best for breast, by the way. I think, especially older breasts that are real. You know, it makes them a little bit firmer and a little bit taller. I think ground ice pack before the show. Yes, absolutely. That's why you see me backstage with ice on my nipples. I love can you say, oh, beats from you. Coming up. Usher is dropping some major confessions. You will not believe his secret crush and his first celeb crick kiss. I'm done with this drink. That is. Yeah. Get it more. Give it more. I want the moonwalk. He is dancing on the tightrope. Oh, hi up in the air. Okay, I have no I said I was gonna get rid of this drink and I will. That would make you want me to light it on fire? No, I don't want any fire anywhere near. Nikki, I just have to ask you this. What is the insurance cost on this show? You know, Travis kept asking Simon that, like, all season long. He's like, I just need to know. Like, what's the insurance? 'cause everything we are seeing, but again, and I don't know if it's cut because I come from an extreme sport, like you just, you sign up for this, right? We sign up for the life or death, like it's just, it's in us. We're born with an adrenaline rush. And when I go out to that room, it's like the only thing Terry and I do extreme is couponing. Yeah. I don't know. That.

I am going to the urologist today. I believe that society I'm going in. I'm actually cone in two weeks, so I gotta go. You gotta listen. This is what I do. I just to stay healthy. And if I didn't have cancer in 1981, where I got diagnosed with cancer, I would have never gone to a doctor. I would have never thought about it. But you're one of those people. You know, we actually got scared into it out. So it's like so violent and I'm on Saturday night line and then you know the story and then they go. Oh, guys make my brother and we'll rest his soul Doctor heralds and brilliant doctor. Brilliant guy. Great guy. My sister Carol's husband, You know arrested so and he said, You got a thing in your throat and I go. What is that? Oh, it's like a dune where we think it's a tune when I'm gone. That's not a tumor, and I'm in the middle of SNL. Yeah, no. So they open it up on dit was a tumor and then a hole. It's a long story where it was benign. They gave you don't do that. Can you stay? Told me that was benign. They said. No, no, not a problem in the hospital. No, it's actually benign and then out, you know the story where I and then Dr Rock, says, Joe, send it to N y U To a guy named Dr Bluhm down there and let's take it. The second opinion. Rock was in medical school at the time. Is that why I was a resident at the time is that wild and I knew him associate. Yeah, so, Yeah. So he goes, Send it down there, So they cut into it like I always say, like Paul Sorvino cut into the garlic on my good fathers that video razor blade liquefied when I hit the panic because you got to get it like this, you know? He's gotta be thinking is gonna look with fire. Yeah, so so sure never came back. And there was a measure Larry carcinoma, which is an aggressive form of cancer, by the grace of God. Thanks to Dr Charles. And you know, I was okay. But money. Good guy Ever since then, then Doctor Belski remember my doctors and they told me you got to eat. You got any antioxidants? You gotta take the right thing. You have to build up your immune system and I stay in all that. So now when I have to go to a gastroenterologist, I go when I have to go to a G P a go when I have to go, Uh, we'll have to watch a hot fudge sundae melt on an airplane across the country. By God. I have to eat 72 milky ways and then take Tom's Because my stomach's upset. I do it. Health conscious Help just is totally other guys, but now I go to different specialists. I would like I told you my lungs because I heard that that the virus can hate your lungs. So I panic like, oh, my DP I go. I got to get excited guys, Joe, you don't need explain. Can I get me everyone's and I go get my mugs and thank God they were okay. And that will go to the urologist. And, uh, hopefully everything will be right there. You talk about the alimony. I can only imagine what your medical bills are away. The things you get when you have to get But listen, you you really have to go to the doctor. Yes, sir. You got a deductible on our on our health care. Do you know that? You know that? Why don't have the company health care? But they will. They will have a deductible. Mommy, Mommy and Daddy's I don't have you. Look at you guys. Will you go in? I gotta tell you, you go in and deductibles are like thousands of dollars. I don't know my wife's wedding. It's ridiculous. You know my wife's plan, which is a great plan that the company that she works for, and I'm on her plan. When I had all of my issues with my cancer. I'm thankful that we had the plan because it covered a considerable amount of the chemo and the radiation. I think my out of pocket cost was somewhere around 3 to $4000, which is remarkable because you could you know you could do all that house for all that stuff about 3 to $4000 out of pocket. Now some insurance plans. You could be paying tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands just to be treated for cancer. So but but the deductibles now are so like they raised the bar so high, it's almost impossible to hit the deductible like my sleep apnea. I have to get supplies every so often have to change the mask. Give to do certain things. Whatever. I pay for all of that out of pocket. I don't because by the time I hit the deductible where it makes sense, and meanwhile I have something that listen I could die if I don't use this machine And it's yet it's not covered under Look. You're laughing. You're anything like your wife? No, No, no, no, wait. Wait hour ago. I was a caller on this program. You've got that fat a million times, which I am. Now I'm talking about I need a piece of equipment to keep me alive and you're laughing. You're laughing about it, But your wife just goes. I'll hold the machine. Yeah, I get it. I'll tell you this. I tell you that my in laws moved in yesterday, my father in law went out of that as sleep apnea because I came downstairs this morning to get the shower or whatever. And they're Beth. Their bedroom door was a little bit open all I was here in the nose, which is exactly what that is. That's leave apnea. You're gasping for air because you can't breathe. So when he and I have to have a little talk is gonna go for the time when I used to have friends, like when I was a kid. If we have a sleepover and my parents no, I can't even imagine what your sleepovers Oh, I'm coming with you. I'm gonna tell you.

Truth vs Hollywood

"Welcome to truth versus Hollywood I'm David, Chen and A. Truth versus Hollywood is look at films that are based on a true story, but we don't just talk about the film. We also talk about that true story. On this podcast will touch on what really happened. How that differs from the film and why and we're not just talking, heads will hear about the true story through interviews from experts, witnesses and people who were involved in it. It's both the real facts and the real facts are l. fix. What do you think that Joanna I loved it today Ridge? Today! We're talking about Martin. Scorsese's classic film Goodfellas Goodfellas is based on the book Wiseguy. Nicholas Pathology which, in turn is based on life of Mobster Henry Hill Hill was actually alive when the film came out and was very pleased with his film based on him, and as we'll talk about later, it definitely had an effect on his life. Pathology worked with Scorsese to write the screenplay and the film was. was a complete. It nominated for six Academy Awards and won one Joe Pesci for supporting actor. It's considered one of the best gangster movies of all times. If I put it on their list of one hundred years, one hundred movies and the Library of Congress decided that it was culturally important and added it to its preservation archives all right well. Let's get to the movie itself. It stars Ray Liotta. Hill Robert Deniro as Jimmy, the Gent Conway, who's based on Jimmy the Gent? Burke Joe Pesci as Tommy devito based on Tommy desimone Paul Sorvino Paul cicero based on Paul Vario and Lorraine Bracco as Henry's wife Karen Hill. Many real life figures at this movie was based off of an apparently Henry Hill ended up getting paid five hundred eighty thousand dollars because of the use of historian, this movie, which is a lot of money to pay to a mobster who has done very horrible things you know in watching this movie again. John Robinson one of the things that. I kind of realized you know or reflected on is the fact that we've been lost you decades seen so many movies about bad men, doing bad things, and that this movie kind of one of the prototypical examples of how they can be glorified an elevated in this. Movie makes that lifestyle look really glamorous while at the same time depicting some of the negative consequence lifestyle, but at the same time it does rubbed me the wrong way that like the people who are involved often are rewarded. We also saw this Martin. Scorsese's Will Wall Street as well. Similar dynamic, there so I'm kind of curious like as you're reflecting on your overall experience of watching the movie, and now that we know little bit more about what happened with the real life characters, and we're GONNA. Talk about it during the courses podcast like. How did it strike you that? This is based off of Real Person I. Think Scar says he couldn't have picked a better release. Go subject to to glum onto here than Henry Hill because though he is gangster and he's fully involved in this gangster life, he is a the likability of this character, which is really what's Cortesi was going for I've seen interviews. We talked about the nineteen thirty two scarface, which was the first time he ever saw. Gangsters depicted as really likable. When you Henry Hill. And he does terrible things, but he's a gangster who is a little squeamish. We see this the film and it's corroborated by true story of his life. He was violent crimes, but he wasn't a a mass murderer and You know the the charisma of him. I think is really important. He wasn't one of the most vicious people in this story. And so I think you're making good point that like. If you're GONNA choose an entry way into this world. Henry Hill is probably the ideal candidate in this case so. Well, the film opens with three men driving in a car, having a seemingly normal evening. It's then revealed that there is a captive in the trunk and than shortly after him, we mmediately get Henry's voiceover with the iconic line as far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster. It's one of the most. Openings and Awesome History Joanna Robinson after nearly three decades. How effective did you find this opening? Well, it's funny. I did not see I was eight years old when fellows came out, or maybe nine so I did not see it in theaters and I didn't see it until later in life and but by then it already seats into the culture because it was so iconic. You know there's. Maniacs good feathers, pigeon parody, and like all sorts of stuff, so I'm going to wear of the beats of it, even though the first exposure to goodfellas was. Is what you're saying. Thousand percent absolutely. But you know so by the time I had seen it. I had also seen so many things that had imitated it, and this is true of like so many of our great films like by the time you get around to watching it. Maybe you seen a bunch of people. Knock it off and so you're like well. How groundbreaking? Is this
