"Yankees coming up with Alfonso Soriano, powerful, right headed swinger. And Joe Pedro Martinez, as you say, but it started pumping his fastball pitching aggressively. That's when he pitched well against the Yankees Saturday is his wind up the first pitch on a fast ball over the outside corner for called Strike to Soriano, a little different approach from Soriano. He's been swinging at the first pitch, but I think they want to try to make Pedro worked in this ball game. How a curveball that hangs Hyeon away for a ball one ball one strike. One of the reasons they have been successful on occasion against Pedro is they've gotten his pitch count of high Earth early in the ballgame, so he's not able to go deep into the game. There's the 11 pitch curveball, and Soriano helped him out on that one. That one another almost like a little blooper off to the outside, and Soriano changed it. Well, I think Boston figures they found a weakness and Soriano the slider off the plate outside or the breaking ball. Away and he's been swinging at one to offering fastball on the ox are off the outside, swung on and missed right. Three. Sorry I chased that one. That's what they've been doing, throwing sliders away hard sliders away. And breaking balls away and anything away. They just been able to keep it away from him. Nick Johnson. Very interesting. "Yes that's going to be a really dangerous player again I'm throwing him in the mix as someone who I think could be a starting caliber they have good communication behind and they can pass his men off a d can stay in front of just about anybody Lebron depends we'll see how he looks this year one on one but generally guys can alot of to attack him so I that's the green can guard just about anybody so I think that would be a really interesting look what one of the things I like about the those three sort of guard offenders right Bradley Green and Casey P is that they both have very good individual strengths in specific areas that matter for Perimeter Defense Avery Bradley we already talked about him as being a about his strengths being at at the point of attack ACP is really good as sort of staying connected through screens he is a great lockin trail player he knows how to shoot the gap defensively against screens then get in the passing lane and Dan Green I listen to you and Danny talk about help and shot-blocking guards a lot and Danny Green is a guy who I know that you always sing his his praises as as one of the better sort of transition and shot-blocking guards and he's he he just really those great help instincts as as a weak side player who can guard the wing and so if you can play that we'll be times where those three skill sets are going to be super important to be on the floor all at the same time and I could see then when and you may call for a closing lineup that calls for those three skill sets over baby some of the more shot creation and size that Kyle Kuzma brings to the court silas to a quick lightning round it's on the other players we haven't talked about yet maybe how you see their role playing out and whether you think they'll be in the rotation when everyone's healthy assert Quinn Cook Yeah I'm not sure about cook honestly I think he's going to be in a dogfight for minutes with Alex Caruso I do think the his shooting will we'll be valuable especially in pick and roll situations I but I think that if Rondo is going to be essentially your your backup point guard that it made you come down to what Vogel values more or what matters more on any given night the shooting ability in floor spacing that cooked can provide or maybe the more rugged defense that Rousseau can provide yeah and we'll see whether avery Bradley as hitting shots mattress aside hey we need we need to get someone out here but yeah I do think that he's probably not coming in the rotation early on but I think he's a a reasonable backup option if needed Troy Daniels East similarly break glass in case of emergency yes and I think that he's even behind cook in that scenario there's the Lakers don't have a lot of big names eh guard but they have a lot of guards and Daniels I think he was the first signing announced in free agency and he's probably how the guy even though his skillset matters as just like a a knockdown shooter that I honestly think if the Lakers could do it all again they knew their off-season one's going to go exactly how it did they would have probably used that spot on a more versatile defensive wing who could guard bigger wings like US small full retype six seven six eight guy yeah I mean now those guys at the minimum are not particularly prevalent mcdaniels to me as a okay regular season player he can hit shots if someone goes down he can play with Lebron and you're at least keep the offense I mean he is atrocious defensively any kind of a one on one situation though Jared Dudley Dudley is gonNA play he's probably the fourth forward I could if I could envision lineups where if Lebron is not in the game and Davis or even if like maybe an Danny Green and Rajon Rondo where you've got floor spacing interchangeable parts at the forward spots and then a pick and roll dive man will will lob threat next next Toronto so I could envision that where that's sort of Dudley's role where he's not gonNA play every single night but when he his play he'll he'll be in that you know twelve to fifteen men minute range probably get two shifts yeah and it's difficult to see him playing much more than that with his injury history an age and then to white can it seems like it's just GonNa be out there might be some nights where he doesn't play especially in Kuzin comes back maybe they would go a little bit smaller in earlier it might go with Dudley instead of him or you know it'll be Kinda like ten minutes a game five minutes coming in for Javagal with it's three minutes left in the first quarter then Javaid comes back in with seven minutes left maybe even a little bit more than ten minutes but Jill Bakken and then they closed the half with add says rolling or the Lakers are up big or they're basically in Bobo in control and there's not a need to play Davis a lot at the five you can see javelin white you know basically play forty four forty two minutes combined the isn't clear to me that McGee is better than though and obviously he also the the he was here last year that got a longer contractual committed I mean I think Dwight is still a great defensive rebounder Dick when he's in position and he can really load up he can he he looked stiff offensively I like the way that he slid its worked he did on the offense of glasses well again you know the warriors didn't didn't have a lot of size but he was basically just getting in there and typically a lot of ball balls out and I think that he's going to have some value there as just sort of your journeyman backup big who can play fifteen to twenty minutes as the big strengths for this group we haven't hit on yet I think we've we've touched on a lot of them just size length obviously Lebron when Anthony Davis that's the starting point for Wolfer strengths I think that they can be a good defensive team I've I've heard you talk about them MM defensively on a couple of earlier pods and I'm sort of an alignment with you I think if things break right for them they could be sort of.

"What's called the Dana white contender, series and goes and I have been to plenty of those let it be known man. Some of my favorite times of the year and season three is upon us. Dana white can Tuesday night, contender series starts next Tuesday, June eighteenth. How're you doing? Good to have you here. I'm good to be here headlining. This man, this is big. This is like I'd rather headline the first Dana why contender of a season because, you know, there's ten of them in, like by season five you might skip one or whatever. But I'm telling you man in the new year, I'd rather headline this than like. Uruguay's. I think so. Yeah, I mean Dana White's right there with two matchmakers, you know, and like there's a little bit of extra added pressure because you've got to win and impressed that you get that, that second dose of reality. It's kind of a little bit of a reality show, and that's who they're going to give contract who sometimes it's one fighter sometimes it's three at think I may have seen four or whatever. Phillies want Manny Machado, Bryce Harper

"To be feeding clear Phillies fans display all they've done. What they've done has been extraordinary despite all they've done. This off season would be considered an utter failure as affiliates. Don't walk away with Manny Machado. I can I can guarantee you for certain the front office is here. That. And I think no matter what it takes whether it's three thirty or three fifty or even north of that. I didn't the Phillies will do whatever is required to get done. Yeah. I said to Scott Miller, my sense was that John Middleton who made the comment about the Phillies, you know, perhaps spending stupid money. He would basically have to grab the steering wheel away from the front office analysts. What do you think? I I agree. I mean, those if they find a way not to to pull in Harper tho those are going to be word that he eats for very long time. I can assure you of that. All right. Let's talk about Manny Machado earlier in the week. I wrote a column in which I suggested that. I mean, I flat out don't think that the timing of the Machado signing is right because I don't think they're pitching develop enough. We we know that they have is tremendous wave of prospects coming you, send me a note after that though that maybe disagree a little bit both to an extent, I agree into an extent. I don't offer you both sides of the aisle. Here's the Padres. Lost ninety six games last season. And now have agreed to three hundred million dollar deal with Machado in that dynamic is practically without precedent. Before yesterday. There had been thirty nine nine figure contracts handed out to free agents in major league history. But only two of them were signed by team that won fewer than seventy games the previous season the oath. Dick's cubs. Went sixty six ninety six signed Alfonso Soriano to one hundred and thirty six million dollar deal. The twenty ten nationals went sixty nine ninety three. They signed Jason worth to a one hundred and twenty six million dollar deal. But the Padres of the top ranked form system, according to baseball America among other outlets, including our own law since two thousand five thirteen of the fourteen teams with that number one distinction made the playoffs BUSTER within two years. And the only exception was the twenty eleven royals and they wound up making it to back to back World Series in two thousand fourteen and twenty fifty. So let me ask you if you were Peter Seidler who is the owner of the Padres. And he's the one who's making like that not a general manager like AJ prowler. Would you have made the same decision that would have made the exact same decision? This is this is a city. In a franchise now that has the opportunity to explode because of the because the chargers have left they play in as we all know the best climate in America. Now have the opportunity to be the biggest show in town. I think Manny Machado though, he isn't Bryce Harper. In terms of celebrity is probably that present a better baseball player. Just in terms of his tools, Dan, Bryce Harper is I will go on record as saying that he will be well worth three hundred million dollars over the next ten years. And I will also point out that the five year player option is not something that shouldn't should should go without being mentioned because as you know, the collective bargaining agreement expires after three years, you never know what the market might look like in five a really shrewd move by Manny Machado when his representation to give them that player option after five

"You can't play our scores that we have in our leave on a line twenty times while well, there's a couple you can't. Maybe just just out of left field. Maybe you. Yeah. I feel very safe right now. Lebron to line twenty times. Yeah. Well, that'd be an extra nine points for them in in that scenario Lakers are so bad right now at the line they shot fifty six percent at the Linus rounding up. Yeah. They were fifteen twenty seven and look this is this goes back for a couple of seasons. And this is a different team with different players mostly LeBron but the Lakers have been bad free throw shooting team for several years. This is this is just more glaring now because they're good. Yeah. When you're a bad team when you're losing more often than you're not when you're not in the playoff mix when you're not worried about your seating. When you're not worried about matching up or playing, you know one or two possession games at the end. If you shoot sixty percent from the line with differences and make you're not in the game. Anyway. But when you shoot sixty percent from the line or fifty six last night and you're in tight games in the fourth quarter. And specially the way. The west is set up right now you lose a couple in a row, and you could lose six spots of ground in the standings. So it becomes a much more the issues the same. It's just much more obvious because the team's well, I mean it speaks to the way. The Lakers have actually been really good in close games during the fourth quarters. I dare Soriano forum. Blue gold at a good peace out with some of the numbers breaking them down about what they do. I know. Yeah. I do. I just looking for kindreds paradigm this. I'm aware of the deal out works, but they've been a really good fourth-quarter team, which and it's been elevated by the fact that they're overcoming their own issues in the fourth like because this is something that you feel is gonna come back and bite him in the ass at some point. Okay. And I should probably know the answer. This have we ever seen a really bad free throw shooting team make a deep run in the playoffs. There Soriano said it was have we have heard sane a teen..

"A new week and the shrew listeners among you may have noticed that we haven't done all of the team previews. We took a little break from that to get into some other stuff at the over under. Of course, we're long overdue definitely go back and listen to some of those pods, Ben Taylor. If you didn't listen to that one because you don't know who he is. He is done probably the best work of anyone going back and looking at the greatest players of all time the in his series of more rigorous analytical approach than any that I've seen that's been done before. That's that was a great pod. We did the top eight players of all time, but now it's time to talk about the team that probably has the most anticipated season preview of any of these. And that is the Laker and joining us per usual, a valued and honored guests Daria Soriano how you do it. I'm good Natan yourself doing well, I, I'm actually finally back in the bay area after a month out after I got married. So I'm, I'm actually like really raring to go again. Got like the good audio quality again back in my by office. So. Aw, a ready get started. Now we'll don't tell Danny, but we missed you. So it's good to have you back. It's good to have you back. Well. Awesome. Awesome. So I think the place to start here, we've got a little bit of preseason under our belt which were privileged to have for versus the ones the previews that we do a little earlier. And so just what are your overall impression so far of this Lakers team increases in giving a course that LeBron is playing limited minutes? Yeah. Like I mean, I think one of the first thing that stands out to me as at they're playing really fast, like really, really fast. I know that playing the nuggets can sort of boost up your pace as well. Right? 'cause the nuggets wanted to get up and down the floor as well, but they're looking to run at every opportunity, even off of opponent makes they're really sort of getting the ball inbounds fast and and pushing the ball up floor. And so I think the pace at their playing at his been something that stood out from positive, STAN will standpoint. I think on a negative side, the defense is. Clearly a work in progress. There's a lot of moving parts on that side of the ball. I think the limited minutes for some of their players in Lonzo ball, not yet playing that sort of has not helped with the defensive continuity stuff that I, I'd like to see them a little bit farther along in there, but also think that you have to be patient defense even more so than offense. I feel is going to be built on like where my teammates, where can I trust trust. The help is everyone made will making the right decision and moving on a string. All of those things are going to be really tied to chemistry. And so this is where I feel guys being out his hurt them a little bit. He'll to both those the running, I think is going to.
