"The family schedule is the wolf. Though Lancaster's house is the lion often rendered in gold ground of red awhile established house from the south. The warm color Palette for the Lancaster airs more on the side of jewel tones much like other southern family clans. The House tyrell schedule is a golden rose on a greenfield whereas sizzling color. Palette of Dorn was inspired by both Indian and Moroccan sensibilities Clapton has remarked quote. I loved designing the costumes worn by the people of door and the door. Niche are hot tempered and Brash. With a disdain. For Convention they embrace a wide spectrum of sexuality and many have children with their lovers out of wedlock. It is such a radically different culture. It was extremely important that viewers immediately realize that this was entirely separate from the capitol. I wanted the doors dresses to look barely there. As though they could be worn without underwear and slip off at a moment's notice. I mean seriously. Dohrn was one of my favorite regions or lands in the entire series. You could basically just put anything any of them. Were wearing into my closet and I would be real happy about that and we will talk about. Dorner stress a little bit further in detail in a while. Then we have. The House of Tar. Garin needs little introduction to their scheduled for anyone who has even seen a single episode of game of thrones. It is of course the dragon and one of the main leads of the Entire Series Of course Aka Khalidi Aka Danny target area in the color story. Which is embedded dance costumes? Very much follows her character. Arc perhaps more so than any other character over the course of its eight seasons and like you said about Dorner April. I think we will discuss classy sartorial journey and more details when we focus on her specifically and as one of the main characters. She had a lot of screen time so she had a ton of costumes to talk about on average cast. Clapton has said that she was responsible for designing around a hundred and twenty costumes per season for the lead characters and this doesn't even remotely include the secondary characters and extras for whom her assistant designers and other members of her team are responsible and Clapton says quote. The whole goal from the start was not to make this a costume drama. It's not velvet dresses and pretty things all the time. When you watch it you really believe you could be there. These are real people with foibles and they and it's not doctored is not sanitized and CASS. Given your professional history. I bet you know a whole lot about this. So talk to me about the role of agers and dyers in film and TV costuming and real quick. I just WanNa say to when when you mentioned all dressing all of those background characters for every scene costumers are usually one of the first departments to be on set so those customers are probably getting there at two or three. Am in the morning on those big days. And they're usually the last one of the very last departments to leave so Kudos to the hardworking costume. Department on game of thrones so aging dying. I am not in dire but I have done it. It's really an art form. It's highly specialized skill that people really spend years and years and years honing. My first experience was on Terminator Salvation. Which I don't know if you've seen me. But you know post apocalyptic so it was like here. Here's a shirt out. Rip IT TO PIECES RIGHT. Make it look old and aged and so. I did and then it was like okay. Well now you need to recreate that three more times. So that's kind of the interesting part about aging and dying. And what makes it such a skill? Is that not only? Are you ripping something to shreds your then recreating it over and over again and dying also? Is this highly refined art forum. That's really about getting the color. Just right the all of those vibrant colors we witnessed in Dorn. Probably all died by the costume department. So it's really integral to creating these worlds visually and no easy feat and Clapton apparently agrees because she has remarked interviews quote. If it takes three days to make a costume it takes another three days to destroy it and break it distressing an aging costumes. It is such an art in itself. You make a costume vets new and then you have to look at it and look at the character or extra whatever and asked what happened to this person so we may start by fading with the Sun and you'd probably start washing it because that breaks the costume down a bit more quickly will do hand stitching repairing on some because again that gives it its character and then we look at the particular moment and the story and see what happens to it for instance. If it's burnt we will work outweighs to singe or rub grease into it to give it more life and I just want to say that aging is very fun and I waited that. Michelle had at least a team of ten Adrian. Dyers probably more for specific episodes because everything April just mentioned. I said it's fun. But it's also incredibly labor intensive. It's likely that every single costume. Michelle made went through the hands of aging dying team. Aging dying was critical to costuming. The hundred of actors cast in roles where regular bathing just might not be part of the characterize routine and at one point or another that pretty much included. The vast majority of the roles on game of thrones especially the extras playing commoner soldiers etc so. The role of the agents was incredibly important on this production. And I just want to point out that the extensive aging and dying on each garment would have prevented. Eli Them from being able to be washed or even dry cleaned. Customers have more than a few tricks up their to battle this. But I do love this quote from Clapton. She says after the actor's worn a few days in the sun it gets even better nice and ripe. Wow I can only imagine what the Wardrobe Department smelled like on some of those hot and on that note. Perhaps the time has also right to take a short break for word from our sponsors world where everyone is confined to their homes. Society begins its largest been watched date in the Hallowed Library of Hulu or perhaps on a shelf of. I think it's time I have to admit working on. This episode was a little bit intimidating due to the sheer number of characters. That appear within this series. I mean I kept asking myself. Who SHOULD WE FOCUS ON? There are so so many characters that I love and we're not going to be able to go into detail about each and every one for the sake of time I mean it's little things like Clapton saying about the character of various she says quote. The robes have enormous leaves that conceal his hands. I like the idea that various could gather secrets inside them. And for any of you who might need a little reminder or haven't seen game of thrones virus was a master with constantly shifting allegiances. So Clapton's costumes. Who Shall we begin with? Well how about some the ladies we meet and the very first episode. There are so many strong female characters in this saga which is one of the reasons. I love it so it's really hard to pick one to begin with but let's go with Sonya Stark. She's particularly interesting because she likes. Her siblings really has to grow up quite quickly.

"Okay cast. Is it time that we get into some specific characters? That's why we're here. Yeah I think it's time Have to admit working on. This episode was a little bit intimidating due to the sheer number of characters. That appear within the series. I mean I kept asking myself. Who SHOULD WE FOCUS ON? There are so so many characters that I love and we're not going to be able to go into detail about each and every one for the sake of time I mean it's little things like Clapton saying about the character of various the robes have enormous leaves that conceal his hands. I like the idea that virus could gather secrets inside them. And for any of you who might need a little reminder or haven't seen game of thrones virus was a spy master with constantly shifting allegiances. So Clapton's costumes. Were very poignant for his particular character and while we can't dwell on various we'll try to include as many of these little bits and bobs of information like this about as many of the characters as we can so CASS. Who Shall we begin with? How about some of the ladies? We meet in the very first episode. There are so many strong female characters in this which is one of the reasons I love it so it's really hard to pick one to begin with but let's go with Sonya Stark. She's particularly interesting because she like her siblings really has to grow up quite quickly on the show When we meet her. She's a spoiled. Teenage Young Woman living with her family at their ancestral home in the north winter fell as a backstory for the stark women. Clapton actually imagined that to pass the dark cold evenings of the north of favorite pastime. Might be embroidery. So we see quite a lot of embroidery on their garments. And even at one point we see them. All embroidering. Together caitlyn stark's sitting embroidering with her two daughters Samsa and the youngest daughter of the Family Aria and cast when I say that some of the decisions that were made or so smart and nuanced in terms of character development that you might not necessarily notice them on screen. I'm not kidding. Clapton has said that in this scene. Saez EMBROIDERY IS NEAT. And precise will that of her younger sisters is always messy not necessarily due to her younger age but rather her willful nature because it turns out as we find out that she's far more interested in the art sword. Play than the art of embroidery. Sandra however was conceptualized to be quite an accomplished seamstress in her own right. Clapton imagined her making Oliver on clothes. And executing her own embroideries which is lovely when we first meet Sansa a winter fell. She wears the star blue however the shade. She wears is a bit lighter than that of her family which was intentional. It really set her apart in a way. This makes perfect sense. Also because once she becomes betrothed to Prince Joffrey. Her family allegiances become tested when she moved to King's landing. Her clothing quickly makes an abrupt shift away from those dark blues and she begins to favor the Komo asks styles and pink and green color palettes worn by her future mother in law thirsty CLAPTON SAYS STONE SET. Even switches up her hairstyle at this juncture to more closely resemble servcies. Long twisting locks. These costumes are prime examples of the importance of costume as a vital storytelling tool this goes any production of course but especially in a show. Like game of thrones where they are incredibly important and not only distinguishing worlds from each other but helping to show a character story. Arc Saunas costumes as with all the characters. We we'll discuss today relate an incredible amount of essential information to the audience. Even if you might not have consciously perceived it yeah for instance You mentioned that Sansa begins wearing pink and Mauve in particular now becomes a favourite of stances because it somehow a blend of stark blue with the traditional Lancaster. Red and this shade is the ground color for her elaborate gown for her nuptials which is the first garment. I'd like to talk about in detail. Because Clapton has noted that she chose a quote gold and Mauve shot brocade fabric that was embellished with metal hip pads to make the gallon. Feel slightly. Armored cast is really the embroidery on this piece that is spectacular in symbolism. Clapton says the seizure of the House Lancaster. The lion was stamped at the back of her neck suggesting that Sansa was now their property. However the embroidery on the girdle that criss crosses her chest and encircles. Her waist includes Dire Wolves. The schedule of the starks as well as fish which was essential of the family from which her mother. Caitlyn comes from additionally we see embroidered. Dragonflies assemble that seems to be unique to sponsor herself her own invention which symbolizes her feelings of captivity. You also see that. She frequently wears dragonfly necklace as well during this period cast. Clapton designed the jewelry. In addition to all of the costumes on this show on how right no small fee and and we must say that. Clapton did seven of the eight. Seasons of game of thrones we should of course credit April fairies wonderful designs. For Game of thrones season six. And that's when ferry took over for Clapton when Clapton was taking a small break to design the costumes for the Netflix series. The crown which I'm sure many of our listeners have also seen but because Clapton designed the preponderance of this season's. It's really her work that we're focusing on in this episode. But I digress. So let's get back to this jewelry. Class has said that she always designed the jewelry with great intention and that the jewelry pieces seen in this series were oftentimes some of the most deeply symbolic items that a character would rare and that rarely if ever to she create a piece of jewelry which was not in service to the story arc or character development so basically the jewelry was just never gratuitous embellishments ornamentation. Command makes sense too because if you think about how. Tv's filmed you know you're seeing close ups a lot on the character's faces so you're really going to see a lot of those jewelry pieces highlighted on the screen close up and so take for instance the necklace that Sauna adopts after she escapes the clutches of the Lancasters. She wears different variations of the same style throughout the show. It's this large ring. That's about three inches. In diameter. It hits her high on the chest just below the neck and threw it is threaded this long chain which dangles well below her hips at terminates with a long pointed sewing needle at the end and as. Clapton is noted. Quote this is an unbroken circle. Symbolizes strength is symbolic statement indicating that sauna is ready to fight. It's also a reference to her sister. Arya who carries a sword called needle likewise on says white wedding coach for her marriage to Ramsay Bolton the front closures feature two clasps from which dangled to large metal fish. And this was a nod of her mother's family tolleys. So the last and final ensemble of that. I'd like to speak about. Casts is another giant Norma's spoiler alert. So we will issue this once again. Fair warning friends. I'd like to talk about her. Coronation Ensemble from the final episode. Of all of game of thrones you know samsa has now prove yourself one of the most resilient characters in the entire series you know. She's often abused as a female pond. By the men in her life husbands or otherwise but in the end she outlasts all in his crowned Queen of the North. Yes and her own. Samba really is a metaphor for her journey. Clapton states I have given her a costing that featured imagery referencing the events of her life and honoring family and friends whom she had loved or at offered her guidance along the way although saunas coronation gown was blackish Grey Clapton. Actually use the exact same textile as the one she used in white for Marjorie. Tyrrell's wedding to King Joffrey who was formerly Saunas betrothed. Are You with me here? Despite their common fiancee Marjorie was Kinda Sansa in King's landing when no one else was so using. This textile gained was really a nod to the shared experience and their friendship. The style of skirt seen on says coronation gown was once seen earlier in the series worn by her mother. Caitlyn stark. And that's not the only familial connection referenced. In the silhouette of this unsolvable the cloak she wears is asymmetrical similar to the one that her sister Aria in the final season and the embellishment on Santa's cloak is laden with meaning one shoulder and sort of pseudo sleeve of the cloak is embroidered with fish scales again a reference to her mother who was murdered during the slaughter of the red wedding earlier in this series where. I know soda of My Life. But you got you have to watch. Don't watch it. You have to watch it. Because it's a pivotal point in this story so back to the clock descended from that same side. Just below the fish scales. The cloak also features motif of beaded and embroidered. Red Leaves which Clapton says were inspired by winter fills crimson leave. We're would trees on the other shoulder of the cloak. We see a beaded embroidered head of dire with an merges from the for trimming at the neck of the clock this is a tribute to lady. Saunas dire with who was killed by in the first season and the dire with monty appears again in this. Assemble this time a tribute to her brother. Rob The former king of the north at the red wedding where he too was murdered. He wore a class with the motif with the heads of two dire supporting each other Clapton. Smartly reused the same Motif in Santa's coronation crowned and we're not done quite yet of beneath the cloak and over her gown SANSA. Wears a metal corset. The sculpted motifs cut out of the metal. Corset are kind of sinuous and they reference the branches again of this. Where would tree? And while that's has now forsaken the metal ring of her favorite necklace the long chain culminating with the needle at the end now hangs from her waist which is yet another reference to her absence sister. Aria who has fled the capital for parts unknown. And my question is. Will we see an entire series? That is just about Aria. I hope so much. Sandra had many rivals if not outright enemies to defeat to get to this point of course perhaps none so formidable than sixty lancaster married to king. Robert Baratheon Sir. She was also the mother to the heir of the throne Prince joffrey along with her two other younger children Moore sell it. The latter was sent to live in Dorn at the age of nine to be more or less raised by the family of the Dornoch Prince Tristan to whom she was promised as a future bride that surface. Three children are not her husband's the king and instead the result of this ongoing incestuous relationship with her twin brother. Jamie isn't exactly common knowledge to everyone else in the show we were. We learned quite early on but in a circles that are aware or suspect. This cast the entire right of succession to the throne into question. Serious deception in terms of the paternity of children would be far from her last and over the course of the series she really emerges as this protagonist villainous. Par EXCELLENCE HOWEVER. This wasn't always necessarily the case. When we first meet seriously as Roberts Queen she had very little agency of her own and for one of her very early ensembles Clapton designed Pale Blue Green dress which was embroidered with bird motifs. She says quote. I love the idea that she sees herself as a cage bird and just to drive this point home cast this blue green shade for the dress was also used in the wall coverings of servcies bedroom as if she was little more than decoration or ornamentation for the palace itself and how quickly things would change. I actually think that we could. I personally think she's like one of the worst greatest villains of mystery so after King Robert Dies of wounds sustained while hunting. Thursday is now the Queen Mother meaning. She's the mother to the king and as inexperienced as teenage joffrey still is Sir holds considerable sway over him and her own. Political ambitions quickly reveal themselves not only in her actions but also in her costumes. The changes in costumes for instance. She now adopts the Lancaster family read and increasingly wears the families lion single April. You noted earlier in the context of sunset. Sir Sees Gowns were Komo ask and Clapton has noted this as a reference as inspiration for these designs. She also looked to the silhouettes of the Middle Ages as inspiration for much sir style. Yes and that medieval inspiration is quite evident in the long trailing sleeves. That sir she is so fond of the dress that she wears to Prince Joffrey wedding term. Margery Tyrell is a wonderful example of Clapton skill at layering. A lot of these aesthetic references a gold ground with a subtle gold fully MOTIF. The dress features signature hanging sleeves golden embroidered lions at the shoulders and a highly unusual neckline..

"Eight year forest episodes into season. Eight right exactly and then we're going to be done but the best way I would describe it or the best review I would have is a feel like the vibe that the actors are just punching the clock to get outta there. Oh no and I heard a lot of negatives about this avoided all the spoilers and stuff so I don't. I have no idea what happens. I'm watching fresh but I did hear some of the complaints about it you know and then when I started hearing that I turned it turned off that stuff or click away but yeah but pretty much I feel like they've been a decade into this show And the actors are like you know man. We've done on it. I want to get out of here to go do something else. I'm bored like let's just get this over with and move on with their lives. Yeah and that's kind of where I feel from a lot out of the actors in the Kinda just punching the clock to get the heck out of there to get onto other projects. Wow Yeah I mean it's still good. I still like it. They were gone for two two years and the first episode returning was like it was like a nineteen eighties. Let's reintroduce everybody with like these like kind of I don't know they title cards and stuff no no title cards but like it was like you see the back of one of the characters Sonya Stark and then the dragon flies over and she turns earns to watch the dragonfly and then the camera's zooms in on her face she is. She's back to you know like I'm just thinking yourself well. If you were gone for two years you wouldn't have to waste an entire episode reintroducing everybody yeah so I was kind of disappointed in that too but Next was a quiet place. Okay so definitely good what the thing I like most about it was its efficiency. Our thirty like quick. No Oh nothing movie and the thing I liked about it is once they did you see it or no loved it. Yeah okay so once they discover how to kill the aliens. She racks the shotgun and then it ends right. Yeah how many movies we go the next hour of them. Running around with the with the microphone Agra Phone and the shotgun blown away aliens right. I mean the thing that I love about it. Is they respected. The audiences audiences time and intelligent not Syria. Like don't have to tell me like how you don't have to show me that twenty five ways. They're going to go kill all these aliens with the microphone. The ear the what do you call it. The The hearing aid or whatever the yeah the bone induction. What do they see? I can't Oh yeah. Yeah yeah the implant. Whatever that immaculate or implant or whatever you know and then they go around for the next hour killing aliens? I mean a lot of movies would have done that so so does that mean that. You're not excited about quiet place to because I would think that's probably what criteria face to is about right. We're I'M GONNA make a sequel. No they're shooting it. I think this next month yeah I think it's upstate New York I think it's going to be shot. UPSTATE NEW YORK. There should be one and done like not serious because like they told the story left you with enough to just chew on and to think about what would have happened and how everything went down and just let my imagination run with it I think so. We talked about franchise a lot. I think this is where this whole idea of franchise and kind of in a horror for a franchise if you make money in a horror franchise. You're going to have another horror movie you know you're going to have another one that's true you're not gonNA. You're not leaving money on the table so even of it you know as long as it's produced cheap upstate New York and all the New York tax credits for filming a New York State And then you do all of that you know. Oh you're GONNA YOU'RE GONNA make fivefold at least you know I mean let's put it this way. People are going to go see it for sure. Yeah there were a couple of spots though. Were like like I almost dozed off. is just too quiet but it was but it was. The sound design was great. The Foley was great did you. Did you get to watch any bonus features. How'd you watch? Do you watch it on Netflix. And that's okay. Yeah no it was great though. I mean I really enjoyed it this afternoon afternoon. Well when I got back from my ride and after dinner we watch spiderman into the spider verse. Oh good did you like it. Oh yeah that was a lot of fun I did. I really really enjoyed the subtle humor that was sprinkled throughout. Yeah you know tons of comedic relief and you know like a lot of. It's surrounded the pig Spiderman fighter. Man You know and spider pig. Yeah yeah well spider pig. Whatever Peter Parker right right right and then then they're like what a pig and he's he's like I'm right here and then he said something like I dunno he spins a web or something he goes? Yep That's all folks you know unlike legal say there's this obviously nonsense and you're just like really come on. These jokes are so bad. But like you're laughing thing though. Yeah Yeah Yeah. And then. The new are spiderman with the Rubik's cube which was cage. You know and right right anyway anyway. So then we also saw cars three EMOJI. Movie wonder woman and May Rue may rue may roo. Yeah what's May Rue her that one so somme ruse a climbing movie so I know another climbing movie right. Twenty fifteen is when it came out so it's a bit old well at this point. It's a bit you few years old. And Jimmy Chen the guy who did free Solo So he and Conrad Anker and they And another Guy Jeremy Jones Jones and then who's the guy that wrote the book into Thin Air. Jon Krakauer Jon Krakauer. Yeah Yeah So. He did a lot of narration on a two and a lot of talking talking about climbing and essentially the May refer wall in. India has been this like climbing holy grail for like decades that nobody could climb and then the small team of three guys they summited it and able to hit the top so that was You know I mean there was some like the things that happened. There's a twist and you know all true of course but I mean it was. It was really good and well done and it was pretty awesome. That Netflix to that was either either Netflix or no. I think that was Amazon prime. Okay Yeah I think that was Amazon prime. Did you have to go looking for it to serve it up to you. Went looking for it so my we were visiting my friend when Rudi up in Garner Ville Nevada which is like just south of our city Reno. Yeah yeah well. Yeah south of Reno but it's south of Carson City. Just just east tahoe anyway already climber. I've gone ice climbing with them and rock climbing bouldering and stuff with him and so he was. You know we talked about Free Solo and the John Wall and stuff. And he's like I gotTa See Russo. We watch my room while we were there but no it was great though added to the list. Yeah no as far. There's like I I I would say in the list of three I think the dawn wall was the best. Probably the better of the the three I would say may Ruelas second though may room might be first and then free soloist third. I think every still third but it's the academy award-winning freeze right. Exactly and Jimmy Chen. It's all about timing. and Jimmy Chin May Rue and Free Solo. Yes so maybe. It's one of those things things. Where may rue put them on the map could have won him the one who could have won him but they put put him on the map? Got Him noticed. And then you know they make good is free Solo. Although even though it's an amazing film that was great. I mean but by by itself. It's amazing but I think when you look at the story line of May route you just like the story line of you know being kidnapped Kazakhstan and or wherever they were said to Jesus Dan One of those stands. Yeah yeah being kidnapped and like throwing the guy over the cliff and and how. How crazy is that? So just a spoiler for anybody but if you guys don while yet good fast forward words like a minute but to have hang out. The whole Mooney booby thinking that he killed someone and then they tell you the guy survived. And how many years. And then they tell the guy I survived. And how long did he live with the fact that he killed someone until they told him that he didn't you know. Did he go years or something so hilarious and I wonder too like. If they're like okay you know that guy that you pushed overlake. He survived and then I think he was executed in a military tribunal was. Did they say in. I think something like that. Yeah Yeah they're like Oh then he stood trial for kidnapping and they executed them so died. Anyway you know but at least it wasn't like at his hand hand I guess right. Yeah so that's pretty much what we've been up to and Yeah it was cool the place we stayed in Tahoe. The guy had a bunch of late. You know like I was gonNA say late model Chevy or something but he had a bunch of would you say like late releases or something for what you mean well like you. You know just like Blu Ray discs. Oh Okay Yeah. The guy had a bunch of movies there that we wound up watching For some reason the boys wanted to see emoji movie twice. It struck a chord to say I sat through a once and then I was doing other things. The second I was helping. Clarisa doesn't make dinner or something. Who knows but anything's spare me? Yeah how about yourself. I'm sure you've been watching stuff over the past couple of weeks so the past couple weeks. I have been watching stuff but I will tell you that I stay have stayed busy. My work had a new project that we kicked off about a month ago. But it's really come to a head. These past last two weeks Replacing one of our systems or whatever systems getting sunsetted and we use a lot of people use a system like ten times a day. It's just moving files around two different people but it's hard to move large files securely so the security of this this this product that we used all the time you know ten times. I'm is fifteen times a day. It's like it's a little too open so they're like we're getting rid of this Russian troll bots like stealing. It's still a little rough cuts. That are exactly so so. I helped install this. You know this gap system so we can securely share things kind of track things better and get everything Cedeno Bat buttoned-down and super secure. You know there's always problems albums but as long as you're doing your due diligence than nobody can really come at you. So that's what I've been doing like hard core all day and like at night. I'm still like fixing all the folders booster all the people so I assume you're working from home with some of it some sort of it and that's a big part of it. A big part of it is like being able to work remotely but remotely and securely so. There's all dual authentication and all that stuff so super boring but it's super like high intensity at work and then on my side hustle at Casta Dot. FM were Getting going with our APP so the platform is built on the website where we clip out soundbites we clip out little one minute sections of PODCASTS and put com add comments to it and kind of have a stream of comments So while we build the platform and the website..

"Linger long among. The north men when good clean Alassane visited the wall with her husband king Jerash, she subsequently wrote in a letter thrice I flew silver wing, high above castle, black and thrice. I tried to take her north beyond the wall that every time she veered back south again fused to go. Never before has. She refused to take me where I wish to go. I laughed about it. When I came down against the black brothers would not realize anything was amiss, but it troubled me, then and it troubles me. Still it obviously works differently on the show because we saw dragons be on the wall and season seven with the pattern of dragging behavior and discomfort in the north persists. Our pals Zach cram and Riley Makati planet dive into this topic at length on this week's game of thrones pre capitals. So be sure to check that out number seven it.
