Similar to marvel wanted this a spin off not just into a sequel but to other properties as well delve deeper into the mortal combat mythology. With maybe a miniseries for hbo max. "For this film. So therein lies the plan that allows me to review. this film. Even spaulding directs the film. Gerry adams is credited with the screenplay mortal combat legends scorpius. Entertainment in coordination with ed boon as well as his nether realm studios it was released a digital streaming platforms on april twelfth. In two thousand twenty. And then it was followed by physical media on april twenty eighth and the film is directed and produced and written by those who specialize in the warner brothers animated features specifically for the dc comics superhero line of animated features. Jeremy adams was selected for the screenplay he was somebody that the warner team new was very much into martial arts. Fact is would roll during their meetings. Every time he mentioned another martial arts movie reference or namedrop cynthia rothrock he seemed the perfect person for the job. He's also huge fan of science fiction and horror movies and he was very very familiar with the mortal combat. Videogames adams drew from his experience and being a father and knowing that he would do anything to avenge anybody who dared harm his children. His plot with scorpion was going to be like mystical version of the liam neeson film taken and the worked hard to provide as many call backs to the mortal kombat games as they could within the short framework to try to give fans exactly what they thought. They want it now. Unlike prior efforts where the story was mostly told from the perspective of liu kang this feature was going to provide the point of view. And the origin of scorpion. Who happened to be favorite character among fans of the video game series since his debut in the nineteen ninety-two original now. Very well improvising adding a lot more humor to his dialogue. In fact he improvised so well that when mikhail started doing his lines the producer. Now mikhail suspect that there's going to be a lot of discarded fart jokes that he tried to throw in here in the special features of the blu ray. Of course that did not necessarily come to be. As far as how i judge it. It really is going to depend on what you're expecting going in if you're just if you've been long-awaiting mortal kombat feature that was going to do justice to the video games in terms of its graphic violence. You're going to get that here. Maybe you'll be more enamored with it. But i do think that the film does grow cramped and unfocused by trying to jam in the original motor conduct characters and then showcasing. The tournament aspect has been covered in prior entries. It's very redundant to what you've seen before. We'll give him some slack because it's been quite a while since we've seen another mortal kombat movie so if you are not as familiar with the original films maybe you'll get a little bit more out of it here and character development though is pretty scant in this film. It's only eighty minutes long. So that's going to disengage. Some viewers who are not intimately familiar with the lore lingo the personalities from the series. Already going into this film and it does linger very long on those pornographic levels of violence. And in my opinion it does come at the expense of its storytelling and that makes scorpions. Revenge fall somewhat. Short of being what i would consider to be an excellent film for anybody who is not already in avowed fan of the series that has been waiting decades for somebody to finally adapt the game into a movie that was every bit is ultra violent games. No saving these characters for sequels. You know maybe that might have worked better. You're taking a gamble. Here that is going to be a sequel though. So that would have allowed a fleshed out main story instead of this scattershot approach of shoe horning in characters and signature elements just for the sake of putting them in now. Larry kaslow the producer of nineteen nineties. Mortal kombat films. He did not depict m. rated fatalities because he recognized that what was novel in the video. Game industry mortal combat at the time. It's violence was very novel for its period. That is pass a in the medium of films ripping out another person's spine while that may never have been done in a video game before you've seen throughout the whole nineteen eighties freddy krueger. jason voorhees. dismember horny teenagers for like over a decade in a similar fashion. So in a movie form it doesn't have that unique appeal pornographic displays of violence. Obviously that's going to save the games fans were ecstatic to see a version of mortar combat. That reflects the game but for those who don't play the game. It's going to seem like the kind of movie. Mel gibson might make if he were trying to direct an animated martial arts feature too padded with violence at the expense of the stories focus or the depth of the characters and also not working in its favor is that honda's story arc. It gets pushed aside at some point in this film. To make way. For the earth round fighters and the combat tournament and adapt dissipates the momentum to cater more to what fans are expecting to see instead of servicing. What it takes to make a compelling narrative from beginning to end so it does fall short there the nature of the film's ending does leave major story threads still hanging in that implies. That warner brothers intends to continue these animated features with other characters presumably so long as there's interest among the fans now as far as my great for this film. Well i'm of two minds about it. As i mentioned it does deliver the goods. That fans are going to be expecting but it doesn't really do a lot for people who don't come in intimately familiar with the premise story. The characters can you watch film and be as excited about it as somebody. Who's a fan. Probably not. I do think that you have to carry at least some love for this property going into it to really feel like this is an excellent film. It's okay it's it's got its moments. Animation is good. The voice cast here is good. Good choreography of fighting. All of that stuff is in there but for me it just falls short of being something. I could recommend to most people. And that's why. I can only give it to ask stars out of four two and a half stars. Mice keo meas. I do think that it had the tools to have the talent to be something more. Something better something. I recommend to less of the hardcore fan base. But i think the story is just a little too convoluted it concentrates. Too much on stuff. That's not scorpion. And ultimately i do think that as much as violence does reflect what you would get. In the video games it is extremely gratuitous in terms of the story. it's just dare to try to emulate the games if the games didn't have this level of violence. This film would never have had this level of violence and so therefore. I don't think it services the narrative and when you're not servicing the narrative you're not really doing good storytelling by that point. So i would rather play the video game and get those levels of violence in to watch a movie that just trying to emulate the video game personally so to stars is the best i can give waldo combat legends scorpions revenge now for next week i am going to move forward a year to talk about mortal kombat from twenty twenty one. Mortal kombat franchise after annihilation didn't do so well in nineteen ninety seven despite the critical and also the financial disappointment of that. Nineteen ninety-seven film annihilation there. We're still plans made by producer. Larry kaslow for a third mortal kombat film khazanov work the story idea for the next adventure concurrently while he was working on the syndicated nine hundred ninety eight. Tv show called kombat conquest and has knobs company threshold entertainment. Their creative team was still reeling from the major mistakes that they had made. Or at least somebody had made with. Annihilation the screenwriters brent. V friedman bryce zabel. They vowed they were not going to return for anymore. Mortal combat although freeman did begrudgingly credited assist for his friend khazanov for the pilot for mortal kombat conquest tv series to get it picked up and well as kind of lay out the blueprint for the season ahead. Scott swan were officially commissioned to draft screenplay for the third film the working title mortal kombat three their early draft concentrate on the character of sub zero not the original subzero. Now this brought a lawsuit. By larry kaslow because he claimed that the value of the mortal combat property itself mostly came from his promotional efforts over the years through his movies. Although warner acquired those movies when they merged with new line sentiment two thousand eight his cartoons merchandise he should retain the rights. Everything mortal combat. Outside of the games the lawsuit would eventually be settled out of court each side signing a nondisclosure agreement as to what they got into the film. And that's where we leave. And i do think that's pretty fun like it's it's fun to shoot out all the windows and blow stuff up and i do think like the the helicopters socks but like you know blowing up. Some of vehicles i think is pretty satisfying. There's a school bus section later on in the game Boy that's really bad saying and when you're blowing up when you're shooting up the school bus trying to blow it up. It's men turned into some sort of terrorist weapon. But like like i if i kind of just just busting stuff up with your gun is pretty fun even though the actual gun play e even though actually taking out the enemies gets kind of monotonous. There was one scene referring to before the helicopter. Boston where you keep shooting out those windows and that was maybe two or three moments. I sort of enjoyed it because it reminded me of that game. Rampage like yeah and sometimes there's something behind the window which is a satisfying experience. Oh is that a cd is a plant or something that you eat. That gives you help. I don't know what it was but but then it kept going that scene. It was like when are we going to spending eight minutes shooting out windows. There's no enemy until confused. So i think the balance of the game was was tough. I found myself wishing they had gone gameboy to any with there. Be an any as mario game. And it made sense on and yes. And then they made a gameboy game that made sense on gameboy and they were different games. Yes i thought couldn't have made it a different game because if you were not allowed to use our super scope or light guns to surely there's a whole different game like you do between xbox and nintendo ds just making a different game but they really wanted to port it also. Can we talk about the slowdown good. Oh yes really bad in super nintendo kind of random spots. There's a lot going on. It would be fast and then there was not much going on to be slow. What was happening under the hood. But yet all around. I i feel like i don't know i mean i don't know how hard it is to make game so i'm probably being way too critical but probably they should just play the game ones like. Oh yeah this is not optimized. Let's had half the enemy. I would assume what happened here. Is they just had you know. They had this existing arcade game. That was a pretty big hit and they had aerosmith and they're like well this is going to sell. Let's just turn out as many as we can because it got ported everything. He got bored of genesis. Super nintendo playstation saturn. It got port across different generations and just was just not not necessarily lazily. Where do you see as far as the future for mortal kombat. As far as this movie series is concerned. I see the shape up to be like three or four movies coming out but my question to deal is before i finish chance interesting. Your question is did you pay very close attention at the beginning of the movie how they started.
