Nashville Songwriters Association's Bart Herbison Shares a Story
"Start back though a little bit in the wilder days of Nashville when it was really growing. You tell a great story. One about your very building that you're in. The office building. If people were to come to Nashville and to see if they were to drive by you're building. What would they tell that story? Because it's really a famous building that you really it has nothing to do with Nashville songwriters, but it's where y'all have now. There was a man named Harold shedd. And Harold was from breeman, Alabama. A musical area, breeman, Georgia I'm sorry. And had worked in muscle shoals area, a musical area might as white an asphalt doing radio jingles. And one day hero went, I record jingles, I can record songs. And took the ill advised move of mortgaging his house. To sign a band named young country. When I say built, that would be a lie. Beg barred and stole some really antiquated studio equipment, put it in a room near music row and recorded this band. And the record labels, let me shout. Hey, did this man? Some of them like, what the hell do you think this isn't country? I don't know what this is. They're off temp other off key, never call us again. So Harold had invested everything he owned, and I think quickly learned, maybe this isn't that easy. And the band was ready to walk because they were a bar band. They played around the south making a living, they had kids. They were older about this time. And Harold goes, no, no, no, no, no, no, we're not done. We're going to make a second record. And over months and months and months when the ban wasn't touring, they did. And Harold Senate to all the same labels, and most of them didn't even listen to it. And they said, what did you not understand about we hate this? We hate you because this isn't country. It's like southern rock. We don't know what it is. And so that was that. And there were three songs left. Harrell said look, let's just record them, and by the way he named that room the first music mill. And so they recorded them. All but one, they had one song left. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, as happens in the music industry, RCA was not happy with the Nashville people running it. So they come down and fire everybody at the record level. Everybody. And they bring in, I think he was 27. He was in his 20s, a kid from New York, named Joe galani. He goes to his big lovely office and what used to be the Sony building and they're showing him around, he sits down, there's one one cassette tape. Sitting on his tape player. He puts it in and goes oh my God.
Jeopardy’s Mike Richards Is the Fraud I Said He Was
"Whenever there's something that's delivered kind of hot kind of controversial, it's often put out on Friday late afternoon. Such was the case with Mike Richard stepping down as the host of jeopardy. He's not going to host this show. There were multiple controversies about this guy that emerged in the past few weeks. And I'm happy to say, I told you so, a lot of you felt he was the best one for the job. He had the best credentials, et cetera, but I said strictly by going after a guy just this knowing the guy the way I know him, he's not the kind of guy any woman would feel comfortable around. And I'm not even counting the sexual accusations and all the shit he said to pregnant women. But the problem is the show had already started production and, you know, they had to air. They're going to end some of the shows. I think it's 5. They're going to air the 5 shows that they already made with him as the host because it's not fair to the contestants who won some money. So of course he made the big apology. I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to jeopardy over the last few weeks and the confusion and delays. This is now causing, I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence. He's never going to do that. And there was a biting article that came out in the ringer, the ringer dot com is a place to go for some good journalism from time to time. And they talked about how offensive he was and the sexist comments he made. And especially toward his female co hosts, and he had this podcast called the random show, Arian, do you? He hosted that I think in 2013 and 2014, and there were a lot of off color remarks he made about Haitians and Jews. And that all that shit made the anti defamation league call upon jeopardy produces, which is Sony Pictures television to investigate this. And that really began to get them bothered.

"There's a bunch of free reports, a bunch of free data there. You can check out some metaverse stuff that we talked about in weeks past. You have insight segments where we highlight some of the data coming out of YouGov that's relevant to our audience and relevant to the gaming industry. So go check out YouGov dot com slash BOE and if you're looking to get connected with them, you can reach out to any of us. We can put you in touch with you, gov. We thank them for their support. You can workshop all your really cool email goth punk names and throw away all your ones related to criminality. You'll be perfect. All right guys, let's do one more story and then we're gonna do our lightning round. So I have one more sort of bigger story and then we're gonna do a bunch of really small for those of you who are new here lightning rounds a lot of fun. We do very fast paced. We will like blow through like 5 or 6 stories here. But I have one last one that I wanted to talk about here. And this is Sony in the news. Sony, the headline caught my attention big time. It was Sony starts buying up eSports events as demand for consoles fall. And basically what this is talking about is Sony, I love even the first sentences. Sony's now going after PC gaming fans, a sales of consoles are swamped by gamer switching to PC gaming. The Japanese companies made a push into eSports in an effort to get PC gamers to buy Sony games. And what they did was they bought tournament portal repeat gg, which I think we talked about briefly on the podcast at some point. Repeat that GG hosts like a bunch of tournaments and eSports events. They've held according to them over a 100,000 tournaments with more than 2.3 million participants, but what's interesting is Sony sort of, and look, this is a journalist writing this, right? Like whether that's internally the strategy exactly is hard to say.
Sony Pictures Says Woke 'Tarzan' Is on Its Way
"So here comes a story that we've seen so many times lately, and I'm mad at myself for not saying this beforehand, so Sony Pictures. Apparently has big plans for the iconic character of Tarzan. After the studio picks up the screen rights to the screen legend from Edgar Rice Burroughs estate, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is planning a complete overhaul of Tarzan, their plans are being described as a total reinvention of the character and the intellectual property. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? You have to be, if you live in these times, you know, you know what's going to happen here without even me saying it. The studio is reportedly looking to bring the character of Tarzan to a place for audiences in this time and space of the 21st century. Please there's no other information. They have no producer on board, no directors, no stars, no filmmakers, et cetera, so it's just the fact that they got the property. Now, most of us know the story of Tarzan, it's pretty well known by this point, here it is anyway for anyone who has perhaps been living in a cave and just woke up from a coma. So Edgar Rice Burroughs creates this novel, Tarzan of the apes back in, I think, 1910 or 1912, ties in as the son of a British lord and a lady who find themselves marooned, his mother dies when he's just an infant, his father's killed by the leader of an ape tribe, so tajin is adopted by one of the apes cala. And he becomes one of them, he learns to climb, hunt, swing from branches, due to thing. And he survives with the jungle as a wild animal. And during his teenage years, he meets a young woman named Jane Porter who's also become stranded in the jungle. And Jane teaches Tarzan and he's falling in love. She teaches him about things and eventually she teaches him how to rediscover his human identity. Well, I see a problem right away. Isn't this cultural appropriation against apes? And isn't this a bit of a white savior story? What was I thinking back then?

Is there anything Sony specific that we have that like, you know, what if they did their next resistance, which resistance kills on looked fucking, but if they were like, came in, this is full from the ground up like Alex. We are. That would be pretty. Anything like Alex man, I just want more of that shit. I just want more. Anything else you guys can think of? I know we're prime in the pumps for Sony, and there's not a lot right now that we know what they're doing, but I like the Iron Man thing they did for PS4. That was not a bad game. Yeah, the Iron Man had some issues, but overall I liked the main setup of that and I thought they did with what they had, which was like shitty ancient move controllers. They did a pretty good job. Like a full fledged game. Along those lines could be. There was a full fledged marvel game for a while, not full fledged. Wow. There was a marvel game on steam for a while, where you could be like hulk and a couple others. It's already been removed from steam for reasons I never was able to find out. But the problem with superheroes is they're flipping all the time, even Iron Man. VR fear is a good one. BR fear fear. Oh, that really old. Yeah. Man, that's where they did cool tricks with their AI that made counter assault recon. Yeah. That's a good game. First encounter assault recon. That's what fear stood for. I forgot. Wow. That's some old ass shit. Fear is like over a decade old, isn't it? Yeah, I think 2001. Okay, I have a question for you. Would a killer app be this? Be honest, no negativity..
The Fall of 2015 Was a Golfing Dream for Smylie Kaufman
"Get your tour card obviously that year, right? And then you go, and then you go win in Vegas. And you say to hell with this, this is the easiest thing ever. What was I doing in college trying to play top 5? I could just come out here and win right away. Yeah, you know, that fall, man. What a dream fall, huh? Well, I was playing so well. And the guys coming off of the web really like, you don't have a break. You just go straight into playing. That's the best thing that could ever happen for a young pro is like playing a smaller, not the biggest tour event, but still the big, the big show. And you get out there and you're just like, all right, I'm still in playing mode. It's not like when you got your card in years past where you had to wait all the way till Sony. You wait three or four months and you're not, you know, you're not as fresh as you were coming off a web tour finals, which we were. You know, we had a week off then went to Napa. It's like, you're still in a pretty good golf shape. I think that was an advantage for me that I finished tenth in Napa and then when the following week and just had an awesome fall, it was the best. Some of the best golf I've played on tour was that fall and into all the way into Augusta.
Movie Makers Say No to Russia Showings
"Good morning, sunny bunch, it's a Batman week. I've got to talk to even though there's a war underway because maybe finally American movie theaters are going to be crowded. Yeah, I think it's safe that there'll be pretty crowded. Assuming you want to go see The Batman because that's the only thing that's going to be playing in most of multiplexes. I mean, you mentioned you mentioned Hollywood and Ukraine. It is worth noting that all of the major studios now universal paramount Disney, Sony I'm missing one here. Have announced that they are going to skip putting movies out in Russia. Warner Brothers is the one I miss Warner Brothers, of course, has a big movie out this weekend, The Batman. And they are, they said, we're putting a pause, we're putting a pause on the release of The Batman in Russia to join the growing international commercial boycott of Russia. So, you know, Hollywood, there's only so much Hollywood can really do with any movie with Russians as villains.

Charlie Describes His Journey of Fighting for Liberty Through Faith
"Look, we're all in the fight for liberty and liberty is not man's idea. It's God's idea. And we as Christians, we are, we are called to do more. And I gave my life to Christ, and I was in 5th grade. Sony 5th graders out there. I encourage you to give your life to Christ. All right, there you go. Good year. That was the year 2005 when I was in 5th grade, by the way. And it was a good year. Are you serious? Yeah, that's right. Oh man. And I say it was the most important in my life when you enter into God's eternal family. And you answer into the kingdom of God. As you get older, that means more and more to you. And you realize, really, what grace is and what your relationship with Jesus Christ is. And I was raised in a Bible believing church in the suburbs of Chicago. And I was always taught that we as Christians in the church should never comment on what's happening in the news. Never comments on what's happening outside of the walls of the church. We just do the gospel. You know, we try to increase our budget, build bigger buildings and do more baptisms. That's it. And don't question it. And I bought into it. And as I started turning point USA, I always felt that had to be outside of the church, never talk about the church. And then I met my now pastor rob McCoy, who's an amazing American a great man. And calvary chapel Thousand Oaks, California. So Charlie, you're looking at this wrong. He said, you're trying to set the captives free. You're trying to fight for liberty and try to make people live virtuous and moralize. You're trying to fight for a constitutional republic that is a gift from God and try to motivate God's church to do more in that regard. And he made a very compelling argument on how the American church founded this country. How the American church was the leading force for defeating communism internationally and also some of the Marxist forces here domestically in the 1950s and 60s. And so he was kind enough to have me speak at his church, and then I went and spoke at Jack hibb's church, another great American and dear friend of mine. And I thought to myself, wow, what if the church really stood up and proclaimed with courage the way that Jesus told us to in a time where everything seems to be falling apart, the church can be the leader at
The Regime Being Run By Pharmaceutical Companies With Daniel Horowitz
"Daniel, and one of your pieces of my memory serves me well, I'm going to dig it up. You allude to the fact that this really is a regime that is being run by pharmaceutical companies. That this is about the small group of pharmaceutical companies that are calling the shots. Is it that sinister? Is it that diabolical Daniel or is there another explanation to this? I mean, I think it's broader than that, but certainly one of the lead ships in that armada of the system when you talk about the system, the cabal, the globalists, it's the pharmaceuticals. And I love how you call it the Fauci virus. China virus is really off message. The likely knew about it and maybe they had some involvement. This ain't the Chinese. They used Wuhan because it was offshore. This was done by UNC UNC Chapel Hill berwick, Jurassic, Fauci, and all the pharmaceuticals that were in it. By the way, fun fact, UNC Chapel Hill, which is the ground zero for the getting function of research for coronaviruses. You know that they're the ones who had Remdesivir. Gilead, somehow got ahold of it. Look it up. UNC Remdesivir. How is it that the only thing that was ever approved, which as I wrote yesterday have an article on this at the blaze NIH's own website says it causes liver toxicity and renal failure and we're seeing that with Sony patients, which is why a lot of people come in moderate moderate COVID, they should get over just like they go into the hospital with pneumonia every year. COPD, we have this treatable and they die. And it is the Remdesivir. It's one vicious cycle. I don't wanna say equal. Would they be comparable if you if you not not not you know like you said removing the game pass and multi-platform titles and it was just triple exclusive. Yes at if. I was sitting in the store and i'm looking at a system. Xbox has like one or two. Sony has like maybe four at this point. It's not stuff's not out for another two years but at this point looking you know without internet or game pass or anything like that. Yes i mean. Obviously the playstation would be more enticing. Because there's more titles that belong to the playstation. 'cause i mean we've said it multiple times and monkey just pointed out again. Game pass is a game changer. So that's why. I'm trying to get that out of this conversation. And just talk about the games that they're making available to us from each platform. Because yankee passes gonna win all day with her. Xbox is going to win because of game pass day one you pay fifteen dollars a month. You get all their gates. There's no comparison. But i just wanted to talk about their properties and what they're giving us our getting them for at this point in time because you know play. Ps five had a well. Ps four had got a war. But ps five doesn't really have any exclusives yet. Were still playing. Ps four and you know those types games but it won't be it'll be another couple of years for get exclusives. Yes i think. Sony games popularity. What would would would get that vote but just looking at it because i was thinking about elder scrolls six. That's a big one for me. Huge star field. I mean it's exclusive and it's the same people that did fall out but it's in space and it's like yes fable which is a classic title. It's not you know it's famous for its choices You know. "Narrative helps explain how the hackers might have gained access to data without anyone noticing with someone perhaps literally transferring files onto drives inside sony and then just smuggling those drives out rather than establishing some sort of external network connection with another computer then at some point. The hackers introduced the tools to wipe those systems. Which have been done remotely or on premise. But that theory is a little iffy. I mean it's it's certainly possible. I don't know if i would go so far as to say plausible. There were definitely sony employees. Who had beef with sony. Sony was going through. Layoffs in two thousand. Fourteen and morale at sony was pretty low but it's it's challenging to see how this kind of approach would also have hackers say. Let's throw the off and cast the blame on north korea Also one of the arguments that supports this. Is that the evidence. That was dropped. Had a particular harm toward sony and was targeted specifically at sony and that Only people in the know in hollywood would not drop that specific information that i think is a spurious argument because the information that was dropped was in huge huge chunks of data and yes there was incredibly damaging stuff thrown in there but it wasn't necessarily targeted right. It was more like the shotgun approach. Lots of little pellets. Some of which are hitting the target. But it i don't know necessarily that. The hackers had a deep appreciation for which bits of information had potentially the biggest punch. I think it was just that shotgun approach. Then there's the theory that the hacks orchestrator wanted to hurt sony for financial gain and this story says that the person responsible. Maybe they went into short sell sony stock. So that's when you borrow stock in a in a specific company from some other investor. You sell that stock at whatever the current market value is. And then you wait now. You have to return the stocks you borrowed at some specific deadline. But while you're hoping is that the stock price will drop so then you buy back the shares you borrowed but you do so at a lower price and you get to keep the difference anyway. That was another hypothesis being thrown around. But the really big one. The main one. The one that the f. b. i. Pushed was that. North korea directed a government. Funded hacker group to conduct these attacks. And some of the evidence seem to point that way such as the fact that as i said the code was definitely compiled on machines that were switched to the korean language and that some of these ip addresses associated with the attack appeared to be from korea while some security experts questioned the reliability of the evidence cited by the fbi the national security agency or an essay said it had more ironclad evidence that supported the link to north korea. But it was not able to publicize what evidence was due to concerns about national security which then critic said was oh. Isn't that convenient in two thousand eighteen. The us department of justice charged a man named park. Jin who was believed to be in north korea as being a responsible party in several hacking attacks among them the attack on sony he was also charged with stealing more than eighty million dollars from a bank in bangladesh and being partly responsible for the development and deployment of a famous piece of ransomware called wannacry. Us officials said that a multi year investigation led to the discovery. That park was off one of the hackers responsible for these attacks and that he belonged to a north korean backed hacker organization called the lazarus group. The officials said that park had headed up a company in china that posed as a legit tech company..

"Was that the. Hackers committed the crime but the media was disseminating the information to the public on a scale. That would not have been possible by the hackers alone that in fact the way the hackers were posting information was really challenging to sift through. Your average person isn't just going to troll through a pastebin site to read through mountains of textiles to look for something juicy but media companies had folks like on staff or probably a lot of unpaid or barely paid interns. Who were doing precisely that thing all day and so sorkin argued. The hackers southern goals realized not through their own efforts but because the media was taken care of all that bringing more harm to sony and the people who work there which is at least partly true. I think honestly. I don't think we really have any good guys in this story because we've got so many which was clearly the victim of an attack but it was also a company that had a lot of skeletons in a lotta closets. Then you have the general media sensationalizing every revelation and then you had the actual hackers who were responsible for the attack itself. It was kind of like a tarantino movie. Everybody is at least to some degree. A bad guy. On december sixteenth we got a major development in the saga. The hackers presumably the hackers anyway posted a threat stating that movie theaters. That chose to screen. The interview would be targeted for attacks. Likening the effort to the terrorist attacks on september eleventh two thousand one the department of homeland security issued a statement saying that it had no credible evidence that any such attack was actually being planned or prepared and so there wasn't any evidence to show that this was something that was really going to happen but rogan and franco canceled their promotional tour for the interview and movie theaters including big chains began to issue statements. That they would not carry the film. Sony pictures seeing this quick response from theaters makes the decision to postpone the release of the interview. essentially canceling its debut on christmas day. Now i should add. This was really after movie theaters had already said they were not going to show the movie. But once sony made this announcement there was a huge backlash against the company with people calling the studio to reverse its decision. But we gotta take a quick detour. Here right okay. And the old days of the movie business movie studios pretty much owned a piece of every part of the movie making process. I'm talking about everything from you. Know the production studios that were shooting movies to the companies that are actually producing celluloid film to shoot on two chains of theaters to where you would show the film but the us government broke all that up because it was considered to be anticompetitive and a monopoly and so then movie theater. Companies were divorced from movie studios and they had more of a say of what films would would not show in their respective houses. So sony could reverse its decision in fact it ultimately did but it couldn't force theaters to play the interview. 'cause sony didn't own the theaters and a lot of theater. Just didn't want to take on the risk. Without you know you know the become the company that potentially put audiences in mortal peril or were associated with that desire. A few theaters still had plans to show the interview. But then you know. Sony makes decisions so then. Those theatres announced that they would instead screen a print of the film team. America world police which was made in two thousand four and which features kim jong il kim jong june's father as The antagonists of the movie. And if you're not familiar with team. America world police That was made by the creators of south park. So you probably get the gist of it. Anyway paramount pictures released a statement..

"A conversation that is not held often enough and never with enough sincerity or gravity. But we also know that you know. What kind of content drives clicks right if you write about cybersecurity. You're gonna get a fraction of the number of clicks that you're gonna get if you wrote about how certain male executives were making way more money than their female counterparts for example ultimately media is a business. So you kind of see where that's going to go right. It's no surprise that media companies are going to really focus on the stuff that drives traffic. Because ultimately that's what drives revenue. Sony leadership went into damage. Control with sony chiefs amy. Pascal and michael lynton sending out a memo urging patience and understanding among sony employees. Saying you know calm chill out. It'll be okay. And the two stated that the hackers had taken a large amount of information and that it was pretty safe to assume that any information about the employees themselves could have been a part of all that and that. If sony had information about you as an employee there was a really good chance that the hackers had info at this point. So i think this was a clear effort to get ahead of problems like people finding out how much they were paid compared to their peers. Which definitely promote some uncomfortable discussions if it were to turn out that salaries weren't equitable across the board. Also to kind of alert in plays like. Hey you might have to pay very special attention to things like your credit report now because your personal information including stuff like social security numbers is now in the hands of hackers who are making it freely available. So you end. If the hackers don't do anything with your data they're making it freely available for other cybercriminals to make use of that data by december third another dump caught headlines and this data dump included stuff like scans of visas and passports of people who are working on various sony films so even more personal information this also included some notable celebrities like angelina jolie there were also documents that include the user names passwords for the accounts of several sony executives but one thing that got wide circulation was a collection of sony. Employees takes on the works of a. Mr adam sandler turns out a lot of sony. Employees have a low opinion of adam sandlers art and it was stories like these that received far more media coverage than the actual attacks. Because again juicy right watching. Hollywood eat its own is something that the media thought was very entertaining and drive a lot of engagement then again. You could argue that. There wasn't a whole lot. You could say about the attacks other than you know. They had happened while some people had been circulating the theory that it was north korea behind it all even in the early stages there were there. Were no smoking guns that you could point to rather there was a suspicion because of the timing along with the upcoming release of the film the interview and the reaction of north korea's media to the idea of the film the interview so ball people were mentioning north korea. There wasn't any definitive evidence yet. To kinda lean on in fact on december third sony issued a statement that said a report that north korea was behind the attack was not accurate on december fifth someone claiming to be the guardians of peace sent a threatening message to sony employees and on the eighth someone claiming to be that same group posted a message on a file sharing site that said sony to quote. Stop immediately showing the.

"Create your account today before the break. I said that the other shoe appeared to drop. And the reason i use that wishy washy language. Is that when it comes to what happened. There's some stuff we can say for. Sure and some stuff we have to kind of guess. At what when it comes to the stuff we can say for sure. We can summarize it like this. You know hackers definitely got access to sony systems. They definitely stole information. And we know this because they later posted the information online frequently using paste. Ben to do so. Pastebin is a plain text content hosting service. So you can post the code to something in plain text on a bent service but you can't host streaming media or you know working files or anything like that you could post code to a file. But you wouldn't be able to execute file in pace ben format so the hackers released lots of stuff over the weeks following the attack much of which appeared to be aimed specifically at harming sony more on that in a little bit as well on november twenty seventh. Just three days after the hack. Someone in that hacker group made available five. Sony films on online file sharing hubs and they included four films. That had not yet even been released to theaters proving that this was part of the information stolen during the hack. The four unreleased films were anne mr turner to write love on her arms and still alice. The fifth film fury starring brad pitt was already in its theatrical. Run at the time. The hackers also definitely wiped sony systems using legit tools to erased an overwrite data to make extremely difficult to retrieve. Now you probably know.

"Infiltrated sony systems and access a database containing user data for seventy seven million accounts including people's names their email addresses passwords. They're logging there was a question about. Maybe their credit card information got leaked as well. Something that sony said did not happen. But this was just the beginning of sony's woes different groups of hackers. Most of which were using early unsophisticated tools attacked sony online. Entertainment sony websites and numerous other sony sites and services so they weren't necessarily coordinating with one another but rather kind of all acting on an opportunity that presented itself and this isn't to suggest that the people behind these attacks in two thousand eleven were linked to the ones. We saw in twenty fourteen but rather to point out. That sony as a company had truly atrocious cybersecurity systems and practices in place. This was in twenty eleven. So you would think that after that experience of being hit by these attacks that sony would really beef up security considerably and make future attacks less likely. I mean you would think that but you'd be wrong. According to multiple sources. Sony systems had poor password protection like super poor like according to the hollywood reporter. Some servers had passwords like sony. Pictures which you know is not great not super secure and the fact that security was so poor meant that the list of possible perpetrators would be really really big big enough so that even when the fbi would announce a suspect that being a hackers connected to north korea. There was enough doubt among the security community to raise questions about it. All right. let's get back to our timeline. The hollywood reporter article titled five years later. Who really hacked. Sony include the fact that according to leaked internal emails at sony. The company discovered an earlier breach in twenty fourteen. That's the february one and the keep in mind that the big hack. The one that we're really focused on in this episode would take place later that year in november but in that february hack there was a fear that the hackers managed to secure the credentials to get administrative control of a sony. Pictures system potentially uploading malware into the system in the process and as we just covered..

"Out of one thousand five hundred fifty five servers so more than half of their servers had to be replaced this is all according to a vanity fair article titled the untold story of the sony. Hack by richard stingl At the time of the hack single is actually working for the. Us secretary of state and had direct connection as he was friends with the The then ceo of sony pictures. According to sony itself as reported by computer world the hack represented a thirty five million dollar cost in. It repairs. That was the figure quoted for quote restoring our financial. And it systems into quote according to a sony spokesperson. And that actually sounds low to me. And of course there were other monetary damages as well due to how the hackers would release much of that stolen information online. And then there's the damage to sony's reputation a rep. That already had more than a little tarnish on it before the hack even happened. Meanwhile the details of the attack included links that the hackers left behind two sites that showed off some of the data they had taken so this was more of like a a directory of what was stolen with the actual data itself to follow in the weeks to come as it would turn out the hackers who had infiltrated the system had been hard at work inside. Sony's cyber walls for at least a few weeks at the point where they left this message and some accounts suggest that the initial intrusion might have happened even more than a year in advance because of just the enormous amount of information that got siphoned away. But either way this was not some sort of hasty message that was set immediately after the hackers got access to the system. Now the hackers had clearly already copied a vast amount of information which again depending on the account ranged anywhere from forty gigabytes to around one hundred.

Welcome to textile production from iheartradio. He there and welcome to text. I'm your host. Jonathan strickland. I'm an executive producer with iheart radio and a love all things tech and for today's show i thought i would cover kind of an infamous thing that happened in tech a few years ago so in two thousand fourteen. Hackers infiltrated the computer systems of sony pictures and they stole an enormous amount of data at this was one of the highest profile incidents of hacking in that decade. And it involves everything from political posturing to the studio of sony waffling over whether or not it was actually going to release a movie so i thought we could revisit that story kind of walk through to see what we know about it and what we suspect or maybe it might be more accurate to say you know what is the official stance of the fbi. And what do other people think and also what has happened since including the people accused of being behind the attack. Also stand accused of other cybercrimes. And i should point that early on a lot of these details Around the hack. I mean even now they still remain unknown or at least if they are known the folks who who know it are kind of keeping it to themselves and you know there's a lot of speculation out there with conflicting accounts as to win. Things got started. Why the hack happened. And who is behind the whole ding. Ding darn thing. There's even a suspect whom an entire country insists does not actually exist so it's a legit mystery including conspiracy theories and enormous consequences. But let's begin with the morning of monday. November twenty fourth. Two thousand. Fourteen sony pictures employees. Come in to go to work. "All don't also get attacked but sure. Well i mean first of all my heart goes out to say what you will about any large company or whatever but. I don't wish anyone to have suffered the kind of huge setbacks that sony pictures has right You know my opinions of their movies notwithstanding. I don't wish them harm. So i'm not a big fan of a lot of he look just released. Neiderman back to marvel. That's all i'm saying anyway So they they had several films stolen from them they had essentially in screener for matt. Screeners are the kind of movies that movie studio will send out to to usually two members of say the academy sure the producers guild right. It's the idea that there's there's certain communities that get to see this so that they can end up nominating it for an award or voting for it or whatever and these were clearly coming from this source because they still have watermarks on screener watermarks. So you know it wasn't like a clean copy of the movie had this overlay on top. But these were movies that included ones. That had not yet been released. There was fury which had already come out and anne which had not come out and a few others and so those very high profile but then there was just tons of information that got released as well. Some of it was merely embarrassing things like a list of internal communications between employees that ended up revealing some very personal opinions about the direction of the company. I think angelina jolie's bad actor. I think we need to stop making adam sandler movies. George clooney wrote me really nice email. Yeah and there's even stuff about the president. Oh yeah people had to apologize formerly. Yeah and then. And then beyond that beyond the just the internal communications. We started getting information about things like executive salaries And that's where we really saw the disparity between people of certain races and genders like white men. Hey you guys spent an awful lot of time talking about north korea the interview at the beginning of the podcast right. I mean possibly too much time because jonathan within the show I'm known as the talkie one. Yeah this is this is also important because obviously if you've been following the story at all you know that there had later been Some allegations made that north. In fact the impetus for the attacks in the first place was specifically because of this movie. We talked about the interview. "There's something really annoying that some companies do that rubs consumers the wrong way and i'm talking about engineering a new mount while wildly letting the other one die specifically. I'm talking about sony. Introducing the e mount years ago while slowly letting amount die and not saying anything. Something that was further made annoying by the occasional introduction of a body or a lens along the way and kind of few and far between actually imagine buying that last body having not known it would be the last or that there would be no new lenses coming. That was it. You'd feel kind of crummy. I'd say heck you might even shun the new mount and just jump systems because why not and that actually happened. People have told me so so here now literally years after the last bit of sony aim out bodies or lenses have been released. The company has finally given it discontinued status in other words.
