"This'll place has been kicked. It's been battered. It's been bruised, and I could sit up here and give you coach speak all day long. I could give you, you know. Hey, we're gonna win this many games. I can't. But none of that matters. And you guys don't wanna hear it. Anyway, You've had enough of that. So excuse my language. All right. There we go. That is a lion's head coach Dan Campbell. He starts off by saying, I'm not gonna give you coach speak and then gives us something like less actionable and way way weirder and we're still in the family hours, So I feel like it would be inappropriate to get to the next part where he starts eating people's Appendages, but we bring on the Steve Atwater toe. Ask him Mike Tyson a speech right if it was that speech make you want to run through a wall for that, dude. Not really. Not really. What which? Which part lost you where he started talking about eating decaf, sir, was what What? What? What? What Ruined it for you there, Steve. That man you say was it wasn't inspiring, man. I wouldn't kill him it did You think it was kind of corny? Because like for me when you hear a speech like that, and you get some of these, like sticky moments from coaches like the one we're Tony Sparano, we're not like had a burial service for that football like you either. Really, really love that. Or you think it's super corny? And like I can get up on the latter camp on that I'm saying it doesn't motivate me like what's up with this dude, man? Why am I here? Yeah. And, uh, yeah, I would tell a story about one of them one of my calls back and do it. I'm gonna put my black come on, Steve said that happened one time. We were in a locker room in the way the game and, uh, yeah. Course try to do something to get us fired up, and it just didn't work, man. Way had to break it off over. You got the way you know you got the brakes feed off of you. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. You gotta be careful with safety team before the game. Yeah, I was. I remember talking to Trevor Pryce. And I think I've shared this with you before we I think we even talked to him at one point, but he would always like we had him on after use with the Ravens. And he would talk about the Ray Lewis. You know, the X X man, you know, dance that he do coming out of the tunnel. Everything and he's like I just stood over on the sideline with rolling. My eyes is like none of that matters. If you can't get jacked up to play football, you were in the wrong profession. You know what that goes to show how there's so many different levels of players and then their mentality. Then you know the great coaches can reach All of the different players, you know is some way or another, because some guys they don't want to hear any music. They don't want you jumping up and down getting hyped, But other guys, man, I was like that I had to get height, man. I couldn't just I could just walk out on that field and go hit somebody, man. I had the idea they had to be into it, man. Yeah. What did you do? What was your break? It wasn't l cool J. Mama said, Knock you out. Yeah, OK. Yeah, right Singing. All right. Cool. I'm good with it. I would the other way with it. I I needed to calm down like a little Tuapse. I put on some some, like classical music here, like some pocket bells, cannon. Can I get a hot pocket fell. Can can I get you know is that he's got a string quartet to dial. I was I was too and I didn't want to crush my opponents too hard. So I mean, e can't even I Can't You ever meditate? Yeah, that was then I was like a Buddhist monk. Zander, you got raindrops falling and I feel like marriage on the mind or so the pocket elves can. I couldn't think of anything that was trying to come up with something. He did five bucks with this. I'm gonna go get married. That's what I'm doing. Boxing on in D minor hit. Somebody want to fund a gonna find that girl propose. She's alright. Already off the real Steve. It's good to have you on. We appreciate you joining us. We're having a fun car like I want to get your take on this because we're having a fun conversation last night. Got a lot of feedback today on Twitter about this. We're talking about the quarterback tears and this is something we you know, we used to do back in the day with Mason. We were talking about because everybody keeps saying Well, if you have a chance to go get a quarterback in the tear of the Shawn Watson. You'd go ahead and do that, because drew Black will never get to that tear. But the thing is, you can win football games with a quarterback in the next year. Plenty of teams don't have a top five quarterback back because there's 32 teams in the league. Math says. That's impossible. So do you think Drew lock can and will get to the next tier? Which would be like their car? Matt Ryan? Jared Goff, Can he get there going there Do you have? Do you have him with three or four? I have him in the lower thirds here. I haven't been in the tear that you're you're either looking. You're looking long at whether or not he is. Guy for you. He's developmental, or you need to bring in competition. That's the tear he's in right now. Yeah, And you know, I'll be honest man. I'm never one to underestimate the ability of a player to improve. Um, but it takes a lot, man. It takes a lot of hard work. It takes a lot of film study it takes. You know the right coaches, you know, pushing the right buttons to You'll make the guy I wanna be inspired to do it and then yeah, you gotta have skills to do it. I think he does have the physical skills to do it. The question is Will be put in the word you know, is his process of process that's going to get him to that next level. And you know all the are these the coaches that can get the best out of them. You know, that's that's always a question with every player man. Can your coach get the best out of you? And if you're close to get the best out of a man, you gotta go someplace else to play because there's somebody out there that could get the best out of them. You gotta hopefully Hook up with that person and hopefully that that person's CO Sula, But, you know, time will tell. But yeah, I think he can do it will be that zoo. Another thing That's on Sondra Locke. You know, the only quarterback tears I ever was worried about was when coach down the passing play, and I had to call it in the huddle. Everybody looked at me crying because they knew that was not gonna work out. Well, but when you were when you were out there playing right there played you talk about coaches get the best out of guys you saw. Did you ever see guys that you knew right away? You say Well, this guy's You know, your training can pick all this guy's not gonna How do you handle that? As a professional? Maybe you're saying a guy when you see him play and he's like you're not giving this up. You get in the campaign, you know, you know he doesn't have the ability. I mean, no matter what the coaches, you know, he doesn't have the ability. When you get in. There's a defensive player. Let's say you saw a quarterback in camp, Okay, I'm about to go pick this guy off before you get sent to the house to work as a banker. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, well, everybody kind of knew it. And, you know, I was forced to be on a team where our coaches and scouts everybody, you know? They were real man. They were. They weren't beating around the bush trying to, you know, keep everybody's feelings. Try to keep everybody happy, man. A good man. You're not gonna be here, bro. Zone, you know? Don't That's a good environment to be in when guys could be, I think sometimes now you know, I don't know if you know coaches and everybody are as honest with the players as they were back in the day. Um, you know that everybody is worried about hurting people's feelings. Uh, you know, at least in some organization, you know that I'm sure there are some organizations where they just straight up with you, man. I hate when you have a hard time making this team. Um and yeah, but way had guys like that..

"And informative. I feel like I'm the spicy nuggets of Twitter like it is kind of delicious. It's definitely fun, but in the end, it's It's mostly empty calories. And you probably not doing yourself You're probably getting unhealthy, just dining off of me. She's e mean I just try to stay away from I used to, you know, get into so many fights on Twitter, but then I just tried to stay away from it. You know, it's just Like there's some people where you just can't take their minds. No matter how good your points are just not going to change their mind. But it is fun sometimes you to indulge in, you know, show people up sometimes, but you know, I tried to like, keep it limited. That's it. That's the smart move, and and by the way, been that little spicy nuggets thing. That's a lot to unpack. There were going to come back to that in a little bit. All right, Ted, let's Let's talk about the other Broncos here for a little bit of this, a guy that does film analysis for the athletic. I know you've looked at this team before, and I'd love to know kind of a recent. Look at it. Remember, I think we had this conversation. Last time we had John, but I want to kind of refreshed and come back to this. What drew lock was coming out of Missouri. Versus what he is right now. What? What are you noticing about? What you thought of him as a quarterback then and what he has become. Now are there reasons for optimism, or is it a lot of what? Similar things you expected him to be able to do? Well, you know, I did not see a lot of true love before this Raiders game. I probably watched one or two games and preparation, but I mean, he only played it out game to play this season total secure that seven. I think it's a slightly seven. Yeah, so I only watch maybe two games in preparation for this game. I watched his entire Every snap of him last season and watch a lot of them at Missouri and my takeaway was this guy has Great arm talent. I love his aggressiveness. Sometimes he's too aggressive. If we saw against Raiders, his footwork is just Mess like he dropped that angles and dress back too far. Which makes my heart around the office of line and he throws off his back foot too much. And you know all those things appeared in this Raiders game again. So unfortunate. I don't see much of a progression from Last season, and you know this season he is going to from one play caller to another play caller is limited off season and no preseason game as we all know, so he's still learning is offense, but just some of the mechanical Technical things that he should have been working on his offseason. Unfortunately, just hasn't got better from from what I saw. And that's what we're trying to determine. Here. You know, we've been talking about this back and forth is this Sondra Locke is that a combination of things are his interceptions, the symptom or the the root cause of the problem, and you go back and look at the tape, and we've talked about this with the center constantly getting dumped in his lap, the right tackle issues that the Broncos have had their now unlike right tackle five this year, uh, you know, trying to try to get some protection around him. How much is actually on a young quarterback Still trying to correct the things that are wrong, and how much of that is on a guy who does not have the faith in his offensive line. Be able to protect him long enough to make the right reed and the right throw. I think I think it's a combination of both. But at the same time, you know he is fault he's gonna hopefully, haven't they developing right now? Aren't one of the stick? I think he has to. A concerted effort, not TOC. Even if you're getting your pocket pushback not to just throw a ball blindly up. While you're not getting a good picture of what's going on back there. I think two of interceptions were just like straight up. He looked And I'm not even sure he knew exactly what we're looking at from a defensive standpoint, but there are are simpler things to like, just attacking what the numbers are like. If you have three receivers on one side, and there's only two defenders there and then you have two defenders on the other side. There's three defenders there. Maybe look to the side, you know less defenders first. On and that interception right before halftime. You know, he had trips trips right? Two defenders over there any of the time out, and they're backed up all the way back to the end zone. He could have had it easy completion that You could have gotten to them. Don't worry, buddy got stopped, and you know they could have called time out and that he tried to force the ball to his receiver, and Enzo Jeff jumps it and you know there's 33 defenders over two over there, so just like simple things like that he has Theo. Get better at and you know, hey, just have studied tape a little more and take more coaching. Is it part of see how to frame this is a part of the way he's seeing it. Is it part of the mechanics when you when you watch him do things like that, where he's just not really identifying. What? What were the routes where he should be throwing the bomb? And you're you're talking about a perfectly you split half the field and the left side of the field. You shouldn't even be looking at The right side of the field. You got plenty of options there between Tim Patrick and KJ handler on that play, So when you're you're seeing what he's seeing, is it just He's not looking at the right things. And so is that correctable is what I'm asking. Yeah, I think maybe he's overthinking it. Or maybe he just Feels like against this coverage. I might have a little sliver of space here that have just, you know, just look at the simple numbers like, you know, there's more guys defending my two receivers here. There's less guys defending my three receiver there. On day. Also, he had a lot of trouble reading the blitz. There are some blitzes where he just did not see him at all. Like he had no clue they were coming there, you know, coming from the back side, Sometimes there's free rushers. So he has to have a better plan against the blitz. And I don't know whether that system think that I didn't see a lot of hot routes that replacing the Blitch. Um he just offensively and Individually. He didn't seem like the Broncos. Andrew Luck did not seem like they had a good plan for the blitz. It Z, You know, to be fair. It seemed like that all year. You know, you look the pasture more offense. You got compressed sets on offense on. It feels like the Broncos are going out of their way and we talked with him, Jake. It's about this. Last night. You would get that segment up there on Broncos country that they come. But it feels like the Broncos are almost going out of their way to do it disservice by making things as easy on a defense is possible when you're running compressed, that's like that. It could be difficult for young quarterback to tell Is that corner impressed man, Or is he coming after me?.

He didn't seem like the Broncos and drew lock did not seem like they had a good plan for the blitz. Well, it it zero to be fair. It seemed like that all year. You know, you look to Pat Shurmur offense. You got compressed sets on offense on. It feels like the Broncos are going out of their way. And we talked with him Jenkins about this last night. You would get that segment up. There are brokers country that they come. But it feels like the Broncos are almost going out of their way to do a disservice by making things as easy on a defense is possible when you're running compressed that's like that. It could be difficult for young quarterback to tell Is that corner impressed man, Or is he coming after me? And you know it just It was like that. At this point, the Broncos should probably say You know what Drew was good at Missouri. Let's spread things out a little bit and see what we can. Do You see what we could do that rather than play these compressed, that's that clearly are not working. Yeah, I would run a little more zone read with them. I mean, you know, they called for holding and that one's own read worry he scored on. But I mean, you know, the defense was totally unprepared for that zone blitz. And if you do things like that, in a red zone, it makes things a lot easier for him. Like you said, you know, spread the ball out a little bit on and take advantage of his athleticism. So I agree. I think they should look into spreading the ball out Maura and making the picture easier for him. Okay, So then Now this comes into gets a little bit better conversation. Maura of a maybe an offseason conversation, by the way, chatting with Ted Wynn from the athletic continuity. Okay, so that that's the thing we kind of had thrown around. It came up when the Broncos decide to move on from Rich can gorilla Where true locked. It looked pretty comfortable with rich and they decided to go with Pat Shurmur because they wanted I guess the guy with more experience in the room. As Vic Fangio kind of handles the defense. He wanted a guy that he trusted on the offense. That's fine. We're here. There are a lot of people here in Denver that wanna already move on from Pat Shurmur. I've been kind of pounding the table. Look, they've got to figure it out. They've got to get on the same page and you want to keep the continuity. What do you think? Yeah, I think that this season would be hard to judge because, like, Like we said, there was no there was a short offseason. There was no pre season and he's learning the offense. So I think you have to give Pat Shurmur another year. You don't wanna get into a pattern where you know you're just going to from offensive coordinator toe offense, the corner I tell you room a quarterback. Um, And perhaps summer has you know some success? It is, uh, in his track record of success, too. So you know, I wouldn't You just fire him right away. I would give him Other chance and let him try developed through and you know there's some things that are truthful to that. He has to get better at S O. I would definitely go for continuity and keep Sherman for another year or less things that get disastrous for the rest of the season. Well to that end, I've compared Drew lock to Derek Carr in quite a lot of ways. They're they're similar build some raw athleticism, some of tools, similar graph status, guys that people thought of going the first slip to the second. Um, you know, guys that came out of offenses that didn't translate, you know, into the NFL. And so you know, I feel like that, if Drew lock is given time and continuity similar to maybe a Derek Carr that maybe he will have the opportunity, get mastery of an offense and become kind of what Derek Car has become and in honestly, their cars kind of a dark horse MVP candidate this year, if you if you look.

"They play with in the second half. They've got to come out. Find a way to put it together in the first half, then they don't have toe. President Throttle all the way in the second half, but they just keep playing intensity as much they do in the second half there going to be okay because my assessment when you look at this team and everything Every bit of it Take in true, you guys showing me a lot. I'm not giving up. I believe I believe Bronco blue and orange. You know, I'm not you, Dave and Rick and Mr I'm with him all the way and you're either all in or you're all out, and I just wanted to get you guys opinion on I'm not my thought process on that. And you guys are the pop. Thank you, George. Appreciate it. Hello. Sondra Locke. Well, we pretty much just just said what we thought about Drew lock, hopefully, by the end of the season will know whether he's the guy or not, It's still too early to say he's not And I thought, I think it's still too early to say he is. Well, we just haven't seen enough of Drew lock and when you also factor in All of the injury issues on this football team, all the things that he's dealing with. With a decimated offensive line yesterday is number one wide receiver out for the year. Courtland Sutton. I mean, that's a problem. He's got all these young wide receiver still trying to figure out the game. Now. Judy had a breakout game yesterday. But as you said, Dave, I'm glad you went back and looked the first half Nobody's open. These guys are still trying to figure it out. And so that's all on Drew lock. Everybody's looking at like, Hey, drew lock Drew luck. It's not all his problems they II would aside from not really having guys open which is true. I thought Atlanta took away the run game. You go back and look at the first half, which I did. I mean, they're behind sticks lot there behind the sticks a lot. One point, um, in Atlanta got very and teams will do this once they figure out like, Wait a minute. These guys are either in experienced or we get backup players. Atlantis started to get really aggressive and some of the some of the things they called zone zone dogs, and I thought there was a little bit of confusion on the offensive line. They on one play. And I can't. Obviously I don't know exactly how they teach all their protections or what they would be, but on one play, Ah, The Broncos have three players. The centre left guard left tackle. Blocking one defender. And the right guard and right tackle our left block three. Now again. I'm not in those meetings. I think if I was I, I could understand it. So I don't know if that's the quarterback identifying, you know, Tio change the protection or the center. Or whatever. But Atlanta was really good at bringing a variety of pressure. They were really fast. Defensively. I mean, one time, you know, they come off the edge. You get Phillip Lindsay, trying to block a You know £260 linebacker you at one point in play design have a tight end and a wide receiver trying to block a defence of end. In pass protection. So they just were continually behind the sticks when quarterbacks I don't care if it's drew lock or if it's Peyton Manning his greatest Peyton Wass when they see color. That often early in the game. They get happy feet. They, you know they don't want to sit in there and get drill by a guy who was a free runner. They had two or three times in the first half. Where they had free runners up the middle of the offensive line. Well, you go sit in there you be standing there. See how you do what I tell you. What you do You try to get your ass out of that pocket. And then you develop bad habits. Because then you start seeing ghosts. Then you want to get out of the pocket when you shouldn't get out of the pocket. So it's it's a combination of youth. And in experience and a couple of back of players and play design, and you know Tim Patrick, who's really had a great great year.
