"Your research now is looking at a number of different things this. What are you trying to learn to help? Sort of get a better handle. What's going to happen with changing fires jeans? Or what could maybe be done to not change saints. That were impossible Would what kinds of findings are getting out. Search the looking for as part of this problem so my role with weekend is to provide information that thank might not offer otherwise half so to provide information chemist and Maud lawyers don't have that relates the atmosphere to the ground. Yeah so that's my goal for we can and for upcoming directs ACU- In my research I do look at patterns of Fire Regime Change That is motivated by climate and The reason for this. It is predicted that fire regimes and severity and the amount of area area burned will increase under current climbing change in areas. So if you know this is supposed to happen and you know where it's supposed to happen. We have satellite data where we can monitor these regions so one area of research is to say okay. Is it changing and the answer there is yes and that is published It seems like another step would be go to go into the temperate forest and see if you see changes as much as you can. They're a little bit more complicated in temperate regions. Because you're more people and we've moved into the we are the winter interface. Another another area of research that I see is is key to Interdisciplinary connections is looking at smoke plume height and we now have space baseline our client he on Calypso and two can take a vertical slice through the atmosphere and see How high plumes are and see their vertical step through the atmosphere and we don't do a good job of placing smoke milk in the atmosphere in models and we were getting better but we need to verify validate figure out what type of smoke milk? How high smoke goes depending on ecosystem fire weather? There's a lot of connections we haven't had because we didn't have this type of data available statistically before and the reason that's important is if you don't get the height in the atmosphere right you don't get the transport writing because air higher up an atmosphere coz faster and if you don't get the height you don't get the transport and you don't get the connections between to where it comes down. So smoke is as a cloud condensation nuclei so that will change precipitation and inhibit precipitation in the near field smoke black carbon organic carbon and can also circulate and land on the Greenland Ice Sheet. which should has And when it does it can force Ice In snow to melt more quickly than it would other is now. If it's covered snow immediately the deal is done. They'll beat us the same. There's been a change. So so you're again. You're going to need that perfect scenario but it can cause decreasing of ice and snow more quickly than would otherwise and that would be the climate feedback. BLACK SMOKE ITSELF IS CHANGES OUT BEATO and which can be positive or negative feedbacks to the climate system. So all of this. This is important. So we got smoke affecting the precipitation and water cycle smoke therefore also having more to do with Climate just in that secondary effect of not only its own Interplay with a solar radiation but then Howard air assaults come as a result or turning into cloud more but then you've also got the melting of the ice sheets depending on whether they're Sudi on tougher knock because black carbon doesn't is all readily As if you do get melting you could possibly meltdown to another layer that has more black carbon black carbon at earlier ages her when there were large deposits gifts you know and then which is a very complicated subject especially good? I was Our working I was on a project of Greenland ice sheet project and They're a my. My team members. Were on the Greenland Nice Sheet and they took ice cores and they found this this deposit. That was a pretty large. It was extremely large and so my job was to find out where it came. Came from where. What how what fires to? What buyers could we attribute this? This layer of black carbon this by mass burning signature and it turns turns out that it wasn't the biggest fires. A lot of the biggest fires and a lot of the dominant transport path is underneath the ice sheet. That once used to be the dominant transport transport path and you would think that black carbonates deposited for all these big huge fires but it turns out that there were some medium mm medium large fires burning in Canada and there was a low pressure system that picked up and carried it up and dumped it on the Greenland. Then I she flew corre ever good sense of timing for yet it has to be a good sensiti me. It was a good sense of timing and the recent that's important is. Everybody thinks that we have all this carbon on the greenland ice sheet. It was because it was march. Fires will that's maybe not the case so it's a different way to look at it and often when people look at ice cores because there's a lot of carbon dropped in one place if isn't at other ice cores around the world they'll think well that wasn't a big fire year but that might not be the right way to think about it that it still might have been. It's suggest that the transplant path for this case just went one place sits at different we. We hadn't been thinking of it like that before. One other factor urban wondering about is this the deposition of this these aerosols ultimately. You're gonNA affect the ocean because the oceans most of the planet. The there's a fire in the plume happens to head out over the ocean and that's the falls out because it's not aw say in the stratosphere or might live the logger does that affect bio biological production in the ocean at all or effects. I would imagine that it would. I would imagine that the micronutrients and smoke doc would definitely affect the ocean's primary productivity and I've seen some studies that have shown that There's there's a lot of micronutrients that come off the fires burning in Africa and Dustin the Sahara. He'll so we have all these micronutrients and they're transported towards awards. Brazil and as they drop off you conceal higher primary productivity in the oceans becoming less Jason less and less and it turns out. There's some studies that have shown that you need these micronutrients in Brazil. From these fires they can be traced from Africa cut to Brazil and without these micronutrients that are rained out in Brazil. You would not have the rainforests because there aren't new nutrients there so in the large large geologic timeframe. The tropics and the tropical forest and Brazil would not exist without the micro nutrients from fire fire and dust from Sarah. He'll and and Africa are now like cookie. I have one more question is something you don't have to know to study study fire. It's like everything in the world ultimately connects to this sort of cycle impacts and feedbacks is there. Is there or anything in this field. That's all I don't need to know about that. Because I studied fire. I am interdisciplinary. I tend to think that way. I don't think we'll ever look at fire quite the same way knowing. altarpiece takes now. It's a new thing. Yeah IT'S A. It's a big cycle Michael. It's which is white so interesting so if you're interested in climate and you're interested in car bed and how it cycle fire fire ski fire ski Fed ed by weather and climate and whether in climate determines what the ecosystem will be as well whether whether in a larger scale and beads right back economist like the guy in principle that guy. FIFA whatever appreciate it very much because you do explain explain quite a bit this is. This was fun..

"Aw Yeah fire can set succession in a different direction. I fire fire cycles. Carbon fire can cycle uncle carbon and result in more carbon in the atmosphere because a lot of the peatlands whether they are in the tropics or in the boreal forest they've been stored linnea and it's going to take centuries and Millennia to get it back or it doesn't come back by carbon goes Serb into the air attack an hour now. This is another thing. Some fires burned particularly hot. Some with what happens to their carbon. Does it go a high in the atmosphere and stay a little longer or visit in the oceans fairly quickly were whereas going for the larger fires and some of the fire era that were the car. Fire for instance that was detected by the weekend campaign. There were several piracy bees and pyro. CB's can inject through the Topa into the stratosphere where they have incredibly long lifetime similar to volcanic activity so the height of the plume again. China's another factor not just the ecology of the forests burning but then the dynamics of the fire itself. That's another factor. You got your guest pile up cashews here making very difficult to do your job. It's a big. It's a circle feedback. Right yeah you have to have fuel it has to betray enough to burn. You have to have the right rather Weather conditions and then the fire. The smoke plume can pop up through the trope applause. Cacophony Higher Cumulus is a piracy set is a term that is now something everybody talks about. Uh but I don't remember people talking about so much say a couple of decades ago a true. It heard it but no one really talked about. But why is it now A common term because we have the satellite data. That's available to prove that's really happening. It was it was my krom who is here now and has given tots Mike from the came up with a words piracy be a pyro. Cumulative Emma's piracy us and he actually has a little talk. You Know Web mail now that we all get on because you can kind of predict when they might occur. So we're all. There's all kinds of chatter data but in the beginning there were only so many satellites and he said. Hey there's this thing happening and I think these. These fireplace are popping up through the trope applause into the stratosphere data sphere and many people some people said wow. That's pretty interesting. You know. Law and other people said UH special malarkey. He was very very much pooh-poohed and then as we started to get more satellite data or observations more way of more ways of looking at things and he just kept on fighting and fighting adding and fighting that battle until now it's accepted and now in his latest research. He is the person with David Peterson. whose younger Tall Guy He they have shown that the latest piracy B.'s. NBC British Columbia. This past year they were equivalent to you can make activity. And then there's a lot of grid term. What terms in terms of the mass injected into the stratosphere and the tyne fine it stays in the stratosphere and goes around on a charcoal now Radiata Beth Effects may be different but in terms of mass not sulphur so much assault But Yeah big effect. Yes pretty incredible. It use incredible. Cumulative says the cocaine no and there's a a lot more of them than had been originally thought even gone back in time and said everybody you know they would find aerosols in the stratosphere and they said all we must have missed a volcano and he has connected fires and said. You didn't miss a volcano. This was actually fire. So he's gone back in time time so when you're tracing back in time where when he's doing that what what is he looking at. One signature is a is he looking at that he puts together multiple bull types of information. Some would be from the ground that people report that there because we know when there's big fires it doesn't matter how remote they are. We know what we know about the big ones and there is aerosol signatures that you can see in different satellite data that he uses. He used to be Tom. It's now uses only so zero zone. Yes yeah and you can see the signatures the signatures. You kinda remind updates days when a lot of the upper areas of research was tracing the signature of nuclear tests and that way back San retrace his steps to figure out. Where when the test was that probably correlating with? Go go physical activity in the ground as well but Yeah Yeah that's interesting. It is interesting isn't it yeah. We can trace a lot because of how we've changed environment..

"Aw yeah fire can set succession in a different direction the atmosphere because a lot of the peatlands whether they are in the tropics it's up into the air attack an hour now this is another thing some fires conspiracy quickly were whereas going for the larger fires and some of the fire pause into the stratosphere where they have an incredibly long lifetime similar dynamics of the fire itself yes that's another factor you got your pile up betray enough to burn you have to have the right rather weather conditions and then visa is a term that is now something everybody talks about a common term because we have the satellite data be a pyro cumulative Emma's piracy us and he actually has a got her but in the beginning there were only so many satellites and he said hey there's this thing Tom and other people said UH special malarkey he was adding and fighting that battle until now it's accepted and now in his AP's NBC British Columbia this past year they were equivalent to mine is stays in the stratosphere and goes around in a sharp whole now radiative edibles cumulative says a full Kano and there's a all we must have missed a volcano and he has connected fires and said signature is a is he looking at that he puts together multiple the big ones and there is aerosol signatures yes yeah and you can see the signatures that signature self you kinda remind Senate retrace his steps to figure out where when the test was that probably correlating with go because of how it changed environment.

"Exa climate change so any work that I do has to do with fire connect all the pieces and see them as being important to connect and we can what's interesting is that they're looking at the chemistry from aircraft at the controls how dried fuse are and how available they are bar the species that are and gases and aerosols that are important to air quality the rules are that controlled by whether longer term weather which six hours to dry leaf or or Lichen but it takes occur fire that consumes more fuel so even in the same ecosystem the everybody is talking from a different place and it's hard to to think thinking about the differences in these ecosystems and what's happening on the ground and the they would say that the atmosphere controls the ground perspective is sort of where you start environmental studies How did you I wanted to understand more of what was going on and as I understood that got my adviser said if you're interested in carbon it's in the boreal and that's where my most of my field work has been done in Siberia summoned Canada's we really can't go there anymore because it's this massive northern continent because science can be inhibited there and it's funding so if it were funding there are people that are interested.

"In general I look at fire and feedbacks thanks to climate change. So any work that I do has to do with fire I'm not only ground-based but I think from the satellite in air quality auty some interdisciplinary and that something. That's different about me is that I try to connect all the pieces and see them as being important to connect I don't do any work. That doesn't have the word fire in the in the word and the work So with and we can. What's interesting is that? They're looking at the chemistry from aircraft. They're also looking in the models but what people haven't done is if they haven't connected it to the ground the fuels on the ground and to the fire weather that controls how dried the fuse are and how available they are to burn. You're so you could have different. Ecosystems that old different amounts of carbon and the new species specific emissions to get the species that are than gases in Arizona that are important to air quality the ecosystem whole different amounts of carbon. But even if he had the same ecosystem system that holds the same amount of carbon depending on. How dry fuels are that controlled by whether longer term weather which which is a combination of Temperature Nunu precipitation wind speed and relative humidity and then it adds up over day so if you think about injured only takes makes you know few hours to dry leaf or or lichen but it takes longer to try the deeper duff or the larger diameter type fuels. So if you have love a drought are real dry season and you get an ignition. That's going to end up being a bigger fire that consumes more fuel so even in the same ecosystem that has different types. That has the same amount of you'll you'll have different types of emission because of the fire weather and it's just something that hasn't been connected the the everybody is talking from a different place and it's hard to to think outside your field so if your satellite person and you're looking down you're thinking of fire detection actions and fire rated power and let me go ahead and get my emissions. But you're not thinking about the differences in these ecosystems and what's happening on the ground and the atmosphere is fueled from below from my perspective but from an atmospheric perspective looking down They would say that the atmosphere controls the ground and the really connected as what is. What would you say is your respectively? Obviously climate is a big part of our looking at but as a biosphere perspective is sort of where you start environmental studies How did you get into the point? We're fire became a focus of your interest So I went to school our back to school because I wanted to understand more of what was going on. And as I understood that that temperatures were increasing and the climate is warming I was interested in carbon the amount of carbon on the ground so that My adviser said if you're interested in carbon it's in the boreal Oh forest and most of the boreal forest is in Siberia so my actual area of expertise expertise is in Siberia. And that's where my most of my field work has been done in Siberia summoned Canada's well but mostly in Siberia which is three fourths so the part of course it's very important and it's a shame that for political reasons. We really can't go there anymore. Because it's this massive northern continent continent that we don't have scientific access to and they really need us bear they really need sites because Because science can be inhibited. There and Siberia a real vibrant scientific community looking at the boreal forest in Siberia were in Russia or anywhere if it would be it's funding so if it were funding there are people that are interested interested..

"Welcome to ams on the air. I'm Dakota Smith I'm Jeff Rosenfeld. Nima mean sense. Where here's podcast? All things weather I wonder and climate fire can cycle carbon and result in. It's more carbon in the atmosphere. Smoke Black Carbon organic carbon can also circulate amland on the Greenland Ice Sheet. And and when it does it can force Ice And snow to Norfolk. Leave Dakota one of the things that you do is you you. You're involved halted an area of research where you know you connected to. So many different aspects of the community and there's a lot of interdisciplinary that goes on and is there ever been anything that like SORTA surprised you. How how what you did was related to their field or the the the the the strange combinations of people who get together because of what you're doing doing or what your group is doing? I think one thing that I started learning as I was an Undergrad and Grad school was how many different professions and fields were her impacted by weather and In some aspects climate and and when I saw all my friends you know doing their work and becoming wing you know expanding in their careers and getting jobs. I realized that so many of their fields were impacted by weather but they had nothing to do with me either the environment or whether in general I think as a scientist we we noticed that more than public. I mean when I when I've done videos and I explain to pay the the water just the water cycle. If if you look at the water cycle everything we do with our water from drinking it to take a shower too to waste in it to everything we do with a shower with the water is just. That's her live I. If it's all connected yeah I really feel like the interconnectedness of the world has become more and more important to us as we start thinking more more and more about how to deal with climate change or even just day to day pollution issues that may or may not affect climate long-term. But are the the questions of how we deal with waste or how we gotta clean up the air and this is one of the great things that came up in an interview. We just had at the annual meeting in Phoenix this year with Amber Soja of the National Institute of Aerospace. She's a An expert in fire and in particular in fire and Siberia. And that just sounds so remote to me it but when we started talking she just opened up this subject from the dirt under your feet to the trees overhead too high in the atmosphere to the ocean's to climate change change all across the world all connected to the together in ways that I hadn't thought of before so I think it's really. We're taking a listen if you think that weather and climate means that we're all connected to one another you understand that had a far deeper level Listening to talk walkabout..

"First of all, let me just say the most important thing. Liana? You guys need to know how I can get area oversaw cheese fo- for coat. The girl. It was God. Oh, I loved it. Yes. The eliminated queens or back, but somehow know them, apparently I was very random who got to come back. And who didn't we long for Kahane months freeze, Mercedes Iman diamond Russia O'Hare? How did they not ask? Russia back. I gas this. Why? Who was like the queen's that they chose. I was a little confused by like no fence, Honey, which by the way, Honey. Oh, honey. Which was so funny. One honeys later like this like referring to his beard as a full on dick magnet. Honey, I was like it's also a pussy magnet. But I know you're not into that. So that's fine. Yeah. It was funny. Like the the queen's that they chose to bring back. I mean since soja was definitely the wildcard there. But Raja was the one who stood out to me of like, oh why because she was so much drama when they want to bring her back. Yeah. Exactly. So skelly repel tells them that win or lose the eliminated queens are not coming back into the competition. And I'm guessing that about twenty four hours later at the end of the lip sync. Rupaul was probably second guessing that decision Brian. I think that he would have rather than any of the six two comeback to make this to have limited to have kept either one of them. But in terms of the three that didn't come back. I would say in looking through them and thinking about it. They're probably the three that you may say may have stayed one week too long in a lot of fans opinions. But again, I will say that I did not love Rosia as much as I may have other may I thought I would have coming in while she was here. But I think it was last week. I was like I miss Raja. And then all of a sudden we get to this week where okay, she'll be back at least. And then she's a no show. Yeah. No show. Exactly. So rupaul tells Brooke that as the winner of the challenge she is going to have to pair up the queen's. And here are the payers Brooklyn. I gets I pick for herself. And she gives herself shocker plastique. Oh my God. I was so bored by this. I wish they would pick him out of a hat or something. So get sugar cane all well and good Evi oddly gets Scarlett O'Hara, a curious Davenport. And Honey Davenport is the battle or the joining of the Devonport so should say they Angie area over Sachi who's going to get some print in this episode and the gag Liana soak in soju. Okay. So I I just want to say about so GIO like, I know that it's like, oh, she was the first now, and she made some sort of tool thing in the first episode, but really she was just supposed to be a canvas for to be painted by silky. So the elephants the makeup all of that would have been silky. And so the only hindrance. Have been oh, maybe soju can't walk in heels. That would have been really the only thing. But ultimately it came down to what outfit can you put on the Queen? And then how can you paint them? And I feel like that's where Sochi really failed. Ultimately was in the painting in the outfit. So I don't think it's any like harsh critiques against soju. Although rupaul like definitely thrown soju under the bus. Let's like oh you paired over. So do I'm gonna throw soju under the bus because I'm a little irritated with her. And plus I heard some tea from the roscoe's viewing party about what was going on with soju. So before we get to that immediately the Dreamgirls, which if you don't if you have been in the show, that's curious Davenport, Sochi nutmeg, nausea and Vange either the Dreamgirls their little clique, and they have been helping each other all season they suspect especially a Curio who are gumshoe of the season. She suspects shenanigans. She thinks it's silky is. Absolutely. That he's absolutely being set up for the fall by Brooklyn here, and I have to agree with Mike..

Evil can only be defeated by kindness between people kindness. The months, courage. Muslim I keep going back to this idea in my mind that. A big part of me like I wouldn't want to be kind to them. Like, I I would I'd be angry. I would want apology from them. And I I'm just wondering why you do it. I mean, do you do you think it actually changes people's minds? I think it's changed. The people minds a lot of people when I show them respect always respect back. And I'm kindly. They always come back and do it because I really really low democracy. I think it's a very big problem that we talk so bad about the office. I love peace peace. We take peace for granted. But if you want peace you have to do something for peace peace is not something natural. It's because of that everyone try to tolerant ideology. I try to place to different mindset, you.
