Fresh update on "soho" discussed on Behind the Badge

"No matter where I am with room in Washington or traveling, you know the things that happened in New York. It's New York City's sort of like a national. It's almost like a state, um in itself. The politicians in New York City you run for mayor of New York. It's like running for a national position. Keep in mind. I don't know what the budget is these days, but back when Rudy Giuliani was here, the budget was about 40 45 billion, I guess. And one of the biggest budgets in the country bigger than most state budgets. So it ZBIG job. There's a lot going on in New York City, but the one thing I've learned Over the past. 2025 years is what happens in New York City. Um, has a lot to do with what's happening in the NYPD as a sweet talked about from time to time, you know, in 1994 when Rudy Giuliani came into office Nobody wanted to live work visit, go to school in a place where they weren't safe. So into you dealt with the crime, which at the time was completely out of control. We had about 2200 homicides a year, highest shootings, highest robberies. Just, you know, a crime haven if you will, Um, you know, as Rudy Giuliani came in the office and address the crime for every percentage point we saw Crime reduced. We saw increases in economic development, real estate values tourism, Um, when New York City went from being Rotten apple were one of the most crime infested cities in the in the country in the world. We went from that To be in one of the top, you know, cleanest, safest cities in the nation, and there was a lot of hard work behind it. Andre. It sort of stayed that. Why, from Rudy's time in office Tonto Mayor Bloomberg's time in office on Ben Mayor de Blasio came in and things started to change. Things really took a turn for the worst over the past year. Um, the antifa movement, the Black lives matter Movement. The riots what went on over the last summer. Then, on top of that you had Cove. It The code restrictions on guy mean restrictions, probably unlike anywhere else in the country. Um, they have decimated decimated the city. But I want to take a step back to the rights. I want to take a step back. To the aftermath of the George Floyd killing. Um in Minneapolis, because after that there were protests and demonstrations and riots all over the country in cities run by Democrats in New York City, the city being one of them. The one thing that come out of that riot from me on we have talked about this. From time to time. Is the overwhelming violence. That people engaged in Um, you know whether it was looting. I mean, not not only stores, individual stores whole main drags all through SoHo like an entire street. People went store to store busting out windows, stealing everything inside whether it was Chanel or Louisville, Teton or proud of some of the most expensive stores in there in the country. They did it in SoHo. They did it on Madison Avenue. They did it on Fifth Avenue and the police at the time were being directed by the mayor. And specifically, I heard the mayor say. He wanted the police department to handle this with a light touch. And as I watched the riots as I watched what was going on around the country, I saw the light touch turn into constant attacks on the police. Tom's getting hit by cars run over by cars, people throwing Molotov cocktail at the cops, people throwing bottles, stones breaks, rocks spitting on them. Um and what I saw what I personally witnessed. Is a lack of response by the cops. So I have to tell you. I was stunned the other day when Leticia James, the attorney general for the state of New York. Filed a lawsuit against the police Department and its leadership T o end. An alleged pattern of using excessive force and making alleged false arrest against New Yorkers during the peaceful protest Now I'm not sure what peaceful protest She's talking about, but I didn't see any peaceful protests. I saw a few protests that started out peacefully and turned into mayhem. That's what I saw. And I want to get somebody else. I I know this isn't just my opinion. In my imagination, So I wanted to get somebody else in here that can talk about it and Rob all Donald is a former detective with the NYPD. He's a friend he serves on the board of brothers before others. Police fraternal group. He's also on the pipe Fitter Foundation, which is Eddie Gal chief Eddie Gallagher, U S Navy chief, his foundation that helps men and women in the military and the police departments around the country. Um Rob, So, listen, man, I I'm having a hard time. Remembering any peaceful protest where the cops used excessive force. Did you get to see anything like that? No, no, absolutely not. Commissioner, You know, like any makeup of protest, and you know, through our training through the years of dealing with it, you know you have 60% of protesters. You have 30% opportunists, and you have 10 to 15% of that hardened Anarchist in tag anizers that look to start that fuse to light that used to start that spark to let the opportunity go. And that's what we saw here and we saw how violently team the chief of the department, You know. Four star uniformed chief was assaulted and got punched in the face that one of these Where in the past decades have you seen that these were peaceful protests. These were opportunities to route to riot they were targeting areas of commerce. That had these high dollar stores. These Gucci stores defend the stores, the coach stores on DATs what we saw and through the whole thing..

"Yes still somehow hanging around until I thank being there. Yeah exactly yeah you're right. It's more about more about name recognition in these days production on the field. I think that's very fair. I think that's very fair. Learn talk about here Mike Evans. which is a weird thing here? Alright Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. said that Mike Evans with a hamstring is expected to miss the rest of the season that came out yesterday. Then today Bruce Arians said they are not going to put Mike Evans on our because he was able to return from a hamstring injury that he had earlier this year in a pretty quick timeframe. So tell me just helped me as somebody. That doesn't know anything. Make sense of this you can. I think I don't know where Jeremy's Getting the information but obviously he's got a source who's telling him that he's expected to miss the rest of the season which probably means that. The injury was serious enough to suggested. Suggested at this point if you go okay. We're going into week. Fifteen two to four week injury. They might just shut them down. So this is not necessarily against Bruce Arians but the idea that Oh. He came back pretty quickly from a hamstring earlier. This year like the also got a brain member that sometimes these veterans get like the Green Lean factor. So you have Egypt Green who does not WANNA be shut down. And they're holding the door open for him even if they don't think he's going to play because there's a possibility that he might take the field and you give them the opportunity to prove themselves at the end. I think that's sort of what Mike Evans has earned he says don't put me on on. IRA wanted to see if I can come back and they say okay. You're valuable enough. Not Everybody could make that call by the way you have to be valuable enough player on the roster. You have to have something that shows that he's he's proven that he can work his way back. He's a quick healer if you will and there's so many nuances especially with hamstrings hamstrings. You know how it can be Adam thiel and didn't think he was going to miss any time and now it's turned into over a month essentially so I think that if fined for fantasy purposes I would not be counting on Mike Evans. But I wouldn't necessarily drop okay. which is so frustrating especially by the way again he has been Stanley? Go all the way through week. Seventeen so just it kills with Iraq. It just kills you with a roster spot that you want to replace.

"Hello everyone and welcome to the cyber wires research Saturday presented by juniper networks I'm Dave bittner and this Says our weekly conversation with researchers and analysts cracking down threats and vulnerabilities and solving some of the hard problems of protecting ourselves in a rapidly evolving at next work twenty nineteen to learn share and collaborate with game changers from companies across the networking industry this year's event features keynotes from burke -secutive as well as special guest speaker Irvin Magic Johnson along with over forty breakouts and masterclasses led by distinguished engineers as well as various opportunities for certification testing and training visit juniper dot net slash next work for more information that's juniper dot net slash Ns T. W. R. K.. And we thank Juniper for sponsoring our show and thanks to our sponsor and Vale whose revolutionary zero reveal solution closes the last gap and data security protecting data in use. It's the industry's first first and only scalable commercial solution enabling data to remain encrypted throughout the entire processing life cycle imagine being able to analyze search and perform calculations on sensitive data all without ever decrypted anything all without the risks of theft or inadvertent exposure what was once only radical is now possible within bail learn more at N. Vail Dot com so hopefully a broken one point zero was actually conducted twenty thirteen that's Sean Mirani he's a security analyst at independent security evaluators the research were discussing today is titled So Hopelessly Broken Two Point Zero and we looked at a few of the same devices that this research initiative covered a smaller selection and we Downton published I believe fifty two vulnerabilities across those devices many of which allowed remote compromise of devices now these were all small office Home Office embedded devices such as routers network attached storage devices or NASA's and we kind of picked up where we left off in two thousand thirteen in two thousand eighteen the opposite broken two point Oh and this time around we broadened our scope to more devices and what we found is that a lot of the security control it manufacturers had been implementing in the five years between those two research initiatives were not sufficient to prevent remote compromise into similar manner than was on twenty thirteen well before we dig into the most recent research to continue with the background from what you discovered in two thousand thirteen the initial effort there was to look into these IOT devices this and see where the vulnerabilities might be yes that's correct and as you say you discovered fifty two cvs's back then yes so based on that you decided it was time for a refresh was the methodology as you approach this round of research there were a couple of phases we had to determine which devices to look at I in host and we went with popular consumer grades devices that people were actually using end would probably care about there were vulnerabilities so once we acquire those devices us our methodology behind with scanning looking for network services that were running on them and mapping out the exposed attack surface within the web application because most of the on feature administrative web applications by default and so that goes hand in hand with looking at the firmware because most of these device manufacturers their firmware publicly available either on their websites or through some other means you can essentially download the firmware extracted and look at the entire files system that's going to be loaded onto the device and that includes a programs they're going to be Ryan so that's those sort of reconnaissance information gathering scanning phase after that we did handle on testing that involves manually poking at the web applications and network services that were exposed by default in order to identify any weaknesses any Angela signs of our abilities that we could go back to and right up and disclose let's go through a few of these devices together and sort of walk me through what you discovered and in how you went about discovering and also what the implications are are there any of the devices that stand out to you that you want to start with among these different devices we found abilities across each one of them some vulnerability classes were more common than others and in particular I would like to talk about the terror master to four twenty network match device does that one had quite a few vulnerabilities that we identified so what's interesting about the master device their use of encryption to obvious gates the HP files were stored file system though the web application makes use a PHP for server side dynamically generating pages for handling requests on the back end and so in order to you hinder reverse engineering attempts what's termites are done is encrypt each individual. PHP file with a static key and an IV balls Zeros once we figure that out by looking at the firmware and identifying the script where all that encryption and decryption processes occurred we decrypted the PHP files themselves and we're able to identify vulnerabilities within those scripts that led us to quite a few findings including command injection bypasses cross obtain cross site request forgery. I believe very common web application vulnerabilities yeah so I'm a couple of questions first of all what is the Tara master device what what is it built to do it's a network attached storage device so allows users to manage files from it has additional applications for accessing those files photo applications it also features a Web hey sean where you could minister the device so what you discovered then again for my understanding is that with the encryption they were doing on these files they had basically coded the key in the firmware is that right exactly not that hard for you to reverse engineer it now once we figured out that he was fairly trivial to get the command go back and access all those texts interesting and so that uncovered arrange vulnerabilities yes let's look at some of the other devices what other ones stood out to ACIS RTD DASH AC thirty two hundred was a Soho router that was particularly interesting because it was the only router it had a buffer overflow class owner ability that we discovered so this was an authenticated buffer overflow which means you had to have a valid log in passwords in order to explain however with authentication bypasses and we've seen that many of these devices have ways to circumvent authorization authentication this would be a remotely exploitable remote execution attack now were there any devices that came up particularly well tested out is not having very many vulnerabilities of aw we found vulnerabilities all the devices the only one that we were not able to gain remote code execution on in the time that we had was this analogy Nasr so we did find fewer high severity security vulnerabilities snoddy Ds to Jay so when you compare results that you got back in two thousand thirteen with what you found this round explain to me what the differences were have how far have we come. I would say we I have not come very far at all while these manufacturers have made attempts to implement security controls that not only make it harder to reverse engineer that devices but in some cases are actual legitimate attempts to protect against smaller ability classes we were still able to exploit remotely most of the device twelve hundred thirteen and get route shells on that so I would say that the progress of these manufacturers have made is insufficient is it the same sorts of things that you discovered back in twenty thirteen or have those things been addressed in there are new ways that you can come at these devices it's essentially the same vulnerability his command injection is very widespread among these where are they coming up short overall would end. Do you have any insights onto why they may not be doing a better job what's keeping them from doing a better job I don't know specifically what's giving them from doing a better job or and whether or not in fact they are now taking steps after the fact there are publication to improve security posture but I think it's a matter of incentives until the companies are incentivized to improve security it's always going to on the back burner for them it's not going to be a priority now you all went through the responsible disclosure process and you got different responses from different companies sued or some of the highlights of what you went through with that part of the process for the most part the responsible disclosure process went smoothly when we reported vulnerabilities most of the any factors we talked to would reply in a reasonable amount of time and they would acknowledged vulnerability reports and they would fix them and in some cases they even ask the pictures we had some communication problems with which led to some prolonged difficulties for us in the disclosure process notably awesome was next year when we reported these vulnerability snack year so they have a bug bounty program via bug crowd when we initially reported the vulnerabilities it took them several months it's I believe five months for them to even acknowledge and get.

You know, having the ability to take a good close look at what the son was doing. So certainly I mean, I can't say for sure what is going to happen. But looking at the data. I'm just suggesting that it doesn't look. So it's going to be as as big as originally predicted be interesting. We have a satellite about a million miles out. So so that looks at the sun and gives us some pretty impressive weird photos in every spectrum just about the sun produces, and they're really eerie to look at and there's a sort of an ongoing thing with the SoHo satellite it's on. It's off it sees things that it shouldn't have seen then suddenly goes off. And I think right now it's off again. So was off again, I believe isn't it. The last time. I saw I think it was off off year. Do you have any comments on a couple of images that appear anomalous that have been captured by SoHo I've seen those images, and their you know, everything that I can't explain it whatsoever. There definitely anomalous. They could be anything if they try and give some kind of physical explanation for it. I I don't see where they could come up with that. Because it just looks too strange and then. You know, it really is interesting that as soon as they capture something like this shortly thereafter. Oh, no so hose gone again. I'm mean, we're we're we're we jump on conspiracies were that way. But I mean, it does seem a little strange you do. Well, yes. Yeah. There's no question about.
