"Let's talk about Kevin Williams here now. What is going on in his life as all this is going down? Yeah, and the crazy thing is because of the fact that everybody knew the Vikings wanted to draft Ryan Sims the year before, they had overcorrected and decided to keep their first round pick a secret as possible. So they saw Kevin Williams, the defensive tackle at the senior bowl that year, and never talked to him again. Didn't talk to him at the combine, didn't talk to him at pro days, didn't try to do any interviews. They didn't want anyone to know that they had interest. That's how much they were trying to orchestrate their ability to draft him. And so Kevin Williams on draft day, you know, he figures he's going to be a top 15 pick as best as he and his agent can figure out, but he has no idea the Vikings have any interest in it at all. And in fact, he assumes they have none because they never really circled back with him out to the senior bowl. And so he's at a cookout outside his house in Arkansas and he's not really paying a ton of attention to the broadcast because usually when a team is going to draft you, they call you ahead of time and let you know and you start talking to the coach and the general manager and then finally you see it on TV that they've actually formally selected you. The first moment he had any idea something was happening. His brother's girlfriend starts screaming while she's watching a TV from the inside and they run in and what's wrong, what's wrong? Well, you just got drafted by the Vikings, and he's like, what? That's completely, you know, news to me. I didn't know that. Then his phone rings. And then he finds out that the Vikings had taken him at number 9, and he's happy and he really didn't know in real time at least any of this stuff had happened and he immediately goes to the airport and gets on a plane and flies to Minnesota, so he was one of the last people to find out the circumstances of his being drafted by the Vikings were almost unprecedented in the history of the NFL. And discredit, he said it really never bothered him. He never really thought that he needed an explanation or felt disrespected by the debacle as he called it. What about his money, though, because I feel like everyone who's listening to this is probably wondering, well, wait a second. How did that affect him financially? He was the 9th pick. The Vikings wanted him at number 7, but they weren't able to draft him there. And so The Rookie pay scale was different in those days and actually much more lucrative than it is now, but it's still was based on the spot in which you were drafted. And so he eventually got the 9th player money. If you compared it to what left witch got at number 7, it was a little bit different because he was a quarterback, but he probably would have had 3 million more dollars and assigning bonus alone if he had been the number 7 pick, but in terms of, you know, could he protest or could he file a grievance or anything along those lines? There really wasn't much recourse and he was just looking to move forward as well. And it all worked out in the end because he's a borderline Hall of Fame type player and even in the previous year when the snafu happened with the cowboys and Brian McKinney, you mentioned both pillars of the franchise in that particular era. So it all worked out in the end for them luckily for them. Yeah, they got the player they wanted as it turned out. They got them cheaper than they wanted when they finally did get Kevin Williams. There was this huge celebration in the draft room. They had all been sweating and very nervous and trying to figure out what was happening. But when they eventually got Kevin and there was official from the NFL, as Mike Tyson, we were in a very celebratory mood at that point. Okay, but regardless of all of that and they're celebration because they got their guy, I would imagine their fan base was probably mortified at everything they had seen transpire on television. So I'm guessing like most teams, they had a draft party or some sort of interaction with the fans. How did that go? Yeah, they had actually had a huge draft party that year because they had the number 7 pick when you're in the top ten, you can anticipate a really good player coming your way, maybe somebody you've heard a lot about in college football. So in their little indoor facility at their old practice place, if I had four or 5000 people there. And so the party was being sort of emceed by the radio announcer at the time and currently Paul Allen. And Paul Allen, in his mind, wanted to see the Vikings take Terrell suggs. And so he was leading the crowd in shears of suggs, suggs, suggs, and so they all had this anticipation that the Vikings were going to draft Terrell suggs there and we're going to get this great high end pass rushing prospect and that's a very exciting thing for any fan base. So when they missed the pick and other team starts jumping them, they kind of get quiet and are confused and as Paul Allen said many of them were inebriated at the time. And so it's the kind of what you would expect if you were at an actual game, I guess, and there was a run of mistakes. And so then they finally get up on the clock and instead of taking Terrell suggs, they take Kevin Williams. And so at that point, the place just went was like shaking in booze and anger and people throwing their memorabilia on the ground and storming out and all these kind of things that happened in that moment. So Mike tice is coming from the draft room in a very celebratory mood and is hoping to come into this draft party and pump up the fans, finds a very different environment when he walks in the door. Okay, so he walks in the door and how do these fans greet him? They let him have it. And in fact, both Paul Allen and Mike Tyson when I talk to them, remembered one sort of elderly woman in particular walking right up to him as he's coming up on the podium and the stage that they had set up and just dropping profanity on him and there's a famous clip. Audio clip that was recorded at that time, a tice is so taken aback. Okay. Okay, calm down. And that clip is still used here in Minnesota on their sports talk shows whenever people get too excited in their debates. And the takeaways of this story is that as funny as it sounds to us now and how crazy of a scene it sounds like it was at this draft party. It really cut deeply on a lot of the people who were involved in part because it was embarrassing, but in part because it happened for reasons that they couldn't really explain at the time. Well, the one thing you can't say publicly in those scenarios is, hey, our owner made us trade down because he's cheap. Yeah, exactly. And that sort of is the bottom line of the reporting I did and so it was well known that they were not operating on the same budget as a lot of other teams, but it was not known then that the owner had demanded it's a 100% that you have to trade down. You might trade down if you get a great offer or a player that you wanted ended up coming off the board or some other circumstance, but it's very rare that you go into it knowing that no matter what the circumstances are for financial reasons only you have to give up your spot. Let's just play a game here for a second. What would it be like if that happened today in 2023 with all those fail safes if someone got jumped today with social media and everything being brought to you instantaneously? How would that be reacted to? I think the draft would be burned down. I can't imagine that it wouldn't over it wouldn't overshadow everything that happened for the entire draft weekend that there would be investigations and Roger Goodell would have to have a press conference and everybody would be wondering if the NFL had tried to tilt the draft towards from one team to another. That was one thing that never came up at that point was the NFL playing favorites trying to help the ravens or hurt the Vikings and that's something we hear a lot more about nowadays, especially with the advent of gambling and all that sort of thing. So the NFL would have, they would almost certainly have to hire like a third party investigation to figure out what had happened and to prove to the public that there had been an honest mistake or an honest explanation as opposed to just kind of as they did 20 years ago letting the teams sort through it on their own. I mean i'm listening to seven ten on popping around to see what else everybody else is talking about. I don't care about anybody else's talking about seriously. So here's what i would tell you. And this is like super inside radio. And i'm curious to hear what lindsay and laura field about this to the longer i've done this. The lesson less. I actually listened to other talk. They decided to set it up where they had bueller. But they could have had shir zor and buehler pitch in this series and it didn't work out that way because of the way. They handled the brave series. I heard mason ireland. Actually talking about this. With greg and greg was trying to make the case that this was the right move because the braves of the better team which look i get on paper. The braves are probably the better team. But here's what. I would say greg bergman or any dodger fan at this point and cap. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. You gotta get over this thing that the giants on paper aren't as good as some of these other teams. The giants are the best team in the national league by record. And you have to just understand that and the dodgers. I can beat them in a series. But i sure as hell don't want to see them in a one game scenario which could happen for the division or the now the fact because they screwed up the rotation and. I'm normally not a guy that criticizes dave okay like i am. You know meek app you. And i are team dave roberts. Okay but i really feel like this was a little bit of mismanagement now. Do i think in the long run. It may not be a big deal because they could still win the division yes. they've made. They've caught them. Which is i didn't expect for that to happen. However we got to get over this. The braves are the better teams. We need to know greg. That's wrong okay. The giants are clearly the better team this season. So i'm going to say this to you. George i disagree in this way when they were playing atlanta they were still as i recall two games. Be hatching san francisco giants. They were still two games behind san francisco. San francisco wound up going on a streak where they lost four out of five five out of six something like that. And they lost the first three against milwaukee in that series before they played the dodgers for me. My opinion was you stay with your rotation because instead of worrying about the three games coming up. I'm worrying about the three games that are sitting in front of me right now. Now look you can say that. They screwed up. Because they lost that series to the giants. But let me just remind you against the for the first game that they lost. They scored two runs in the second game that they lost. They scored one run and in the third game that they lost. They scored four runs but they scored two runs until the top of the ninth inning. They the offense and the bats were not what they had been prior to going to san francisco and by the way san francisco was was really i mean they they were using bullpen days for the last two games so to me i would put more of it on the offensive side of the dodgers and less on the manager and his decision for the pitching rotation. That's my opinion. Okay fair enough you know what. Let's tackle that on the other side. Get people's thoughts on it. Also i wanna get into the uc aspect of all this ucla love. "The next one. So here's a really weird one for you guys. The manager of a mcdonald's franchise in. Canada has revealed the story behind grimace the purple pal of longtime mascot ronald mcdonald. And it's left a lot of people very confused. Brian bates who's worked for mcdonald's for ten years casually dropped it into an interview with cbc news over the weekend quote. He has an enormous taste. But but it taste bud. Nonetheless page told the network in an unofficial explanation adding that the character was meant to show that food tastes. Good is the fact that grimace is actually a giant taste. Bud a big deal or no deal sodano. I think it's a big deal. I never knew what the hell he was. So i mean the fact that we finally get this reveal whatever i want fifty years later. Whatever the hell. I think it's fascinating so i've always wondered Whenever he popped up somewhere. I thought maybe it was some sort of blobby. Dinosaur thing cartoon thing but a taste but kind of makes more sense. Now i'm gonna go the opposite direction. Here lindsey and say no deal. And here's why i had to look up. The definition of the word grimace an ugly twisted expression on a person's face typically expressing disgust. Pain or ryan amusement. Okay so that. If you're a taste bud. And i grimace after biting into a big mac. That doesn't sound. Like i'm making a big smiley face. I'm i hate to be like so overly cynical all the damn time. He's just a big purple thing that hangs out with donald mcdonald and the hamburgers. If that's the world that you wanna live in then go for it. But i believe that. He's a giant taste. Bud i don't know what's the more interesting story in the last couple of weeks. The taste bud grimace guy or the mcflurry machine being investigated by the federal government. What's going on in. Yeah i told you they. On purpose they stay in the news. No they do it for supply and demand. I used to work in mcdonald's so if they say it's not working you're gonna wanna come back. Terrorist attack in British park kills three people.
"A stabbing rampage that killed three people as they sat in a British park on a summer. Evening is being considered a terrorist attack. Police said on Sunday. "Thanks for doing this guys for the last couple of weeks I have been thinking about what role I. wanted the show to play in terms of the dialogue that's happening. With this and I thought it was better than me. Sort of giving voice to it myself that it be a much better to have a dialogue with people is one of the things. I was realizing over the last two weeks outside of my own house. Old I really haven't discussed this stuff in. You know my wife and I have talked about how `bout it, but I really hadn't. Beyond that really. Considered? What kind of conversations I? I would want to have with people outside of my own home. My own faith and I think it is important dialogue to have especially. Amongst photographers photography are actually documenting. What's happening right now, but it will also lived the experience of being. Covering this. Just, just briefly I I experienced the LA riots back in I think it was ninety to ninety one. And one of the things and I grew up in that neighborhood I grow near arts in Normandy probably about two miles. My family's home is is there. And one of the things that I remember very vividly. Besides all the cast that was happening is the presence of a lot of photographers in those communities. Not just the photo journalist, but a lot of people who were just photographing independently. One of the things that really bothered me about that. Is that a lot of those people had never come to the community photographic before. That, many of them would not come back afterwards. And then later on when I would look at portfolios. like six months to a year later I would see images. That were made during the riot. But they were without any sort of context or any sort of greater egg relation of what had happened what led to those events happening? Changing and that's spurred me to work on a project. That I've been working on now for thirty years on downtown Los Angeles largely because I felt like at the time. This is years before it became what it is now in terms of gentrification, but it was a part of Los Angeles I had grown up in and I felt that had been dismissed to a great degree and I just wanted to. Use My camera to sort of illustrate. What I felt was beautiful, interesting about a part of Los Angeles that was fiving and important to a minority community here in Los Angeles now it's become gentrified in now. It's completely at very very different thing, but as I see the events of the last couple of weeks, I have thought very much the same thing. You're saying all these people going out and making photographs. And I just felt like you know us as photographers regardless of race. We have to think about. Not just the kinds of pictures that we make, but those pictures are intended for. And the impact it can have especially if those of us who are out there. Making photographs are not working journalists and I just wanted to have a dialogue with both of you. Because you guys are both working photographers on the east, coast. Photographing these events and Photographing. Events. Not only American society with Black Cultural Society before going to continue doing this. And I just to hear I your own personal. How you are both Alliott. Both are personally experiencing these events. And then we can get into much greater conversation in terms of the role of photography now and going forward, cherise, I think you can take since you've actually been out in a failed. No Laws I've had experiences of male male family members and friends who have had violent interactions so having that personal story it gives me a perspective when I go in and I'm actually covering the current the current things that are going on now with the protest in the demonstrations that are happening all over. ME. What I will say is this time it feels different of cupboard, protests and things before, but this time it feels like the youth are really what what I've seen. What I've noticed is the youth are more engaged in their on fire in their serious You can see that there are so many young people out there. In their organized they have an agenda. They have action items. And they're calling for certain things to be done or they will continue. With the protests with the work that feels very different, because it's a stronger a stronger voice now the other thing I'm seeing that's different out there are. There are more white people out there this time. Whereas before it was mostly black, people who were calling you know saying. Stop doing this to me. And calling for change now you have white youth who were out there as well as I saw other people, too, but like I said it's been mostly like a younger movement in terms of who are really out there in the numbers with them. Having what experience yesterday was. They have printed out their agenda and these action items in. They've given it to their legislative representatives. They're calling them. They're following up, so that's been probably like the biggest thing I've seen. Is that the youth are more engaged which. May Have Time In. They're not giving up in there, not scared That's the other thing you know. They're not scared to voice the problems that they see. They're not. To demand for these changes. This time around of being closer to home and I've been watching. Some of my friends out. There believe covering this protest top to bottom in light was such a high level of qualities amazing. Is One of those things where. Fast, forward, twenty thirty forty years and twenty twenty is in the history books. Would be proud to say that I know a lot of top officials. Who when documenting this time in history? So I've been close to home, you know I have a five year old son, and for me. The question of should I be out there? Covering this or should I be here covering my son? and. That's been a big question mark throughout the last week and a half when. The protests began and last night was the first night that. You know told my wife I'm going to go out there. It will fuel events happening in picked when I was close to home in. Backed up mcgeer? Wait now and by the time I got is the crowd had already dispersed. I was online trying to figure out if there was something else happening now close enough that I can get to. And the social media feeds had updated at that time so I, just said all right. Let me just go home. When I got home I started. Seeing all feeds, update and I just. decided to stay home, but you know my wife was. Worried rightfully so I would have been choosing to go out after the curfew. Dowse set in New York, which means that. Just, walk into my car I. could have just been arrested. Just welcome to the car or driving Cardin I'm seeing footage of police officers. Yanking people out of the car the after curfew, so those are the things that you ought. To Take into consideration and you know I. didn't grow was father's radio home so the last thing I wanna do is put myself in this situation where I'm not at home for my son so. I do know that they are the ways that we can be protesting that we can't be revolutionizing. You know it's not just a one-size-fits-all type of situation you know on. We can revolutionize by reading informing ourselves equipment ourselves with enough knowledge and information today. The was not pulled over is anymore. Re can right you know contribute with words you know. I'm seeing a lot of photographers being jerked around with the licensing so so so bringing awareness to how can properly get business stuff to together Sodano? The biggest thing that they really wanted to correct at that time was how he landed when you go back and watch how he landed at. Duke with these huge one handed slam traffic. He's landing on one foot one of the big things you see. Now when he goes up for a dunk whether it's an alley whether he's just throwing it down to hands. This year is that when Lebron plays the offense is is tremendous right there. They're one of the best offensive teams out there. But when he doesn't play when he's not on the floor I should say that offense becomes very anemic even when Anthony Davis was an. MVP candidate in his own right is on the floor. And it reminded me of the years in In Cleveland the three years that Love Irving and and Lebron were together. When Lebron didn't play that team wasn't just not a great team not wasn't just a below five hundred they were awful and given that you've been on the inside you've been on a Lebron James Team? Can you explain to me how that is. How talented players? Once you remove this one guy turned into a bad basketball team. I think it's it's style of play. It's continuity I think that's something that it's it's weird because Lebron James is always you typically been healthy. She's always played in seventy five or more games except for last year due to the groin injury. So it's like this is the guy that each up eighty ninety percent of like court time. So you're what what you're really referencing is like non-core time and even then comes the postseason. This is a man that's going to go from playing thirty seven minutes a night thirty eight. He's going to go up to like forty three forty four minutes a night. 'cause there's no bags and there's no practices for most of his energies just using games. So what you're really talking about is how do you play Good Basketball for eight to ten minutes in it for twelve minutes and that can be tough to find that continuity. It's tough because it's such a small sample size right and yes it's a small. It's a large sample size is when you look at how often it happens. But it's very very difficult for coaches to be like how we're GONNA play for this ten to twelve minutes when the broncos out of the game because when he's in the game everything's everything's perfect. Everything's runs great room and I think that's the challenge. The coaches have a lot of people are talking about Darren. Collison coming in and then interrogating him bats. That's the challenge and it's and it's been a long time. The bron James Challenge is how do we play that 'cause they had with Kyrie Kyrie is a great score but it's like when Bronco go out of the game game that was an opportunity for Kyrie to really explore and really play his game and get his rhythm will Kyrie's rhythm might not necessarily be the rhythm for the the other guys on the court and I thought knock on Kyrie. But this was an opportunity to get going scoring and maybe throw the ball into Kevin Love. which when you had the surrounding guys there wasn't an offense? So you can't really say like hey we need to figure out what we're GONNA do when he's out of the game because that's just realistically he's going to be in the game Ormeau. Rondo at this point Well I I think there's there's two components there's an on the court and then there's a locker room right. There's a locker component and it's like a like say what you want about Rondo. He's a very dynamic guy on and off the court so you WanNa make sure that Rondo understands what your is your team goals are. I think Rondo is in a very different space. And he was years and years ago whether it was in Dallas when I played with them or leaving Boston I think Rondos one of those guys that in this moment right here they need to find. I I think that's Darren Collison being. It's so big the need to find one more guy that can compliment that second unit And so yes do but you gotta look at what can you do. He's a net negative guy adding Rondo very very rare. But no one really questions Kenney still play is he's still a contributor when you're just looking at the second unit and when I tell you that the six years prior that's one thing this year I I mentioned it early.
