"The Degi. That I worked at it manufacturing which loved I really felt the call to ministry at twenty nine and I was arguing with God, I, I had a great manufacturing jobs that I just love love the people. I worked with love the work, and so my argument with God was, I'm a cheapskate. So I'm gonna save all retire at fifty five and that's when I'll do ministry. So and I knew it was wrong. And, and it was doing good work, right? So it's like I, I can do both and the company that I worked for sold when I was as he owes thirty three so here I am. I don't have a college education of project manager, making really good money and I don't have the background to go anywhere else. So I had to start my own business. Still kind of arguing with God and then the business became successful destruction. So it was okay. Well God when I make this much money then you can have me as it's just been this constant up and down battle, and it really came to a head and in two thousand eight we were doing great work here. We'd come under the umbrella as fiscal agents of, of three different churches, who had, you know, funnel money through if people want to donate send our kids to camp, we had we were working with, you know, different sports agencies to scholarship kids for sports, but it was really kind of self funded through churches through our construction company. You're my construction buddies, and we had space church lettuce sublet. We knocked out walls and an old prosthetics manufacturing plant they made arms and legs we turned it into a defacto community center with foosball tables, and mill creek foursquare church was just a, a huge part of that they have. At a lot of construction workers there who came alongside, so it's really fun and my wife and I, we just amassed a lot of real estate during this time building houses doing a little bit of developing and had millions of dollars in property, you know tied up and. Remember back in two thousand that whole housing crash thing. So here we are millionaires were thinking that we're going to liquidate, all of our assets were living like poppers were still living in a little farmhouse with would. He driving old cars, but we have this dream that we're going to start a shelter and transitional housing on a farm and we're going to sell off everything in two thousand nine and build this, and then God took it all away the crash happen. Those sudden, wait a minute. Here's a stream, but now, the money's gone all the money, not, not only the money, the income, and the ability to even care for ourselves. And you talk about no control. I it was the local CitiBank not the, the big national, but local CitiBank stallworth in the community. One of the most stable construction lending institutions in the country, and they, they went insolvent, and I'm not getting my draws and all of a sudden, the money's not coming in. And finally, in June of two thousand eight sat down with another VP's and said, we're not going to be able to honor all these draws, and I had already been mortgaging my house, 'cause all my subcontractors, were buddies, and they went insolvent, and soon after my other Bank, Washington mutual. So then I went over to frontier Bank, and I'm working with them. And then they went under and pretty soon, what was solid, what we're good investments all this work over twenty years of scrimping, and saving living like a Popper, and in less than one year here I am with seven. Kids now still foster parenting with no way to take care of them. And still had this burden to start a shelter. So what do you do with that? I got to the point where I realized I had no money. I couldn't take care of my family. God still had this burden as call of ministry, and I knew I'd been fighting him and just yielded said, all right. God I have no income no way to care for my family, but I will go ahead and start this, this shelter this dream that you have. And so that's, that's how hand in hand. Got started. It was out of complete failure, and being hate saying getting kicked in the teeth. But that's kind of what it felt like that, that God was going to continue kicking me in the teeth until I yielded. And it was it was scary, too, because I don't have the ability to start a nonprofit, so automating the ability nonprofit I knew nothing about running a nonprofit having a board. We just did stuff at a construction company. And if I was broke one of my construction buddies that helped me out. And so we just. Maybe describe it as just kind of in cowboy right? I wanna scholarship these kids for sports. You just did it. You didn't. There was no accountability. There was no budget. There was no grants. It was us kind of did what you felt that the kids needed looking back on it. It's not a sustainable model to very arrogant model. It gave me a lot of control over people's lives. There is it can be intoxicating when you are helping people at feels good. And you can lose sight of the fact that God, gives everything and you start almost a little bit of God complex, like on the one writing the check. And it was good stuff. It was we were able to do things like I, I knew somebody whose, whose wife would have died without a surgery, and it was only eight thousand dollars. Right. And you send that eight thousand dollars and it feels good right now. I don't have eight thousand dollars to send to tell somebody, but God provides it just when we're doing what we're supposed to do. He brings it in. It's really brought me to my knees over the last ten years to just say. Yeah, I, I really own nothing. I own nothing. I didn't own anything. Then even when I thought that I did and God called me because I don't have the ability to start it on profit to run a nonprofit. So it really went from a place of have the ability to make a difference too. I am making a difference with the ability of others in on, on a community versus on yourself with some friendships were just kind of coming along. Yes. Yes. So it was it was a really interesting time and, and the local United way Snohomish county, human services department, the city of everage and local nonprofits, churches, people who knew what we'd been doing in the community. He was just amazing to watch them all come alongside and say, we, we love which you've done, but you need some workstation you could do this, and you broke let us help you so, you know, the county for example, they, they brought us in. In. They bought tables and chairs they funded for me to go to grant writing class United way came along. It's now called the community foundation of snowman county back, then it was called the greater Everett community foundation a Mattie, Metzker and carry and these, these people who came alongside and said, let us teach you how to set up a board that will pay for these classes will start sharing your story with funders, and it was just a crazy time since we started it for the shelter. One of the reasons that I was just going to build it knew they'd come was my wife and I did after hours emergency placement and we found out that it was actually illegal to care for kids in any facility based environment, if they were under thirteen years old when they came into care, and those rules were written in an effort to abolish orphanages, the reality of how it played out, was the fact that if you go to drug raid, the police, and there's kids there, they call CPS workers, and it's going to be the youngest least experience kids. Right out of college. 'cause his worst hours and they pick up six kids, and they're trying to strap these screaming kids into the back of a car in they're working out of a car. They drive around calling foster parents who don't have the capacity, or the knowledge on how to care for that many kids. So the kids hear their story over and over, you know, I don't know if they have life. I don't know where they I don't even know if they're related. Do you won't take them or you take Billy but not Susie? So the kids adhere here. This played out my wife and I this was heartbreaking. But in starting this first piece this shelter. We had the vision now, having to do it with the help of a nonprofit, we had to have insurance. No one would ensure me we had to have a license and the department children's ministration didn't wanna give you license because it doesn't exist. It was just crazy times at sure member flat broke no money to make.
