"Look at it. Much Tom. TMT. That was too much talking. TMT. Too much time. Too much time. All right. So do we not talk about the Red Sox at all? Is it like Bruno? It's been like this for months. What are you talking about? What are you talking about? What are you talking about? What do you mean? This guy comes in every talk. How many games up are we in? That was so passive impressive. Socks have won 5 in a row, which is amazing. Over 500. Yankees have won 6 in a row. They haven't gained a single game in that 5 game win streak. 11 and a half back. 11 and a half back. I'll do the math for you. That's 12 in the loss. I'm not talking. Keep talking, rich. And I'm running it in there. It's rich August. I hate this. This is why I hate it. It's June 7th. June 7th. He's dead on. It's June 7th. I'm not talking. What are you talking about? Two or three injuries were down. The Red Sox would be at first. Excuse me. Thank you. Keep talking. No, no, no, keep talking. It's okay. It's something that I'm reveling in every single day. I'm speaking it into existence. At the end of the year, if we get 28, what does your manifesting is? I'm not happy. You can just hang it out. Mike, manifesting. Join me in manifesting. Join me in manifested and I think he understands he doesn't understand the nature of baseball. You're manifesting you got three more wins to go and the NBA Finals, you're manifesting. You're manifesting right now that Celtics are manifesting every day since January 1st. We ended the season. The season's give it to me. Baseball season is closer to the beginning than the end. No, it's kind of over. It's over..

"In my house that's going to say the words go Lakers. In earnest, ever. It's just not happening. It's fine, right? It's sarcastic. That's right. You gotta add in earnest. I love that. I remember when I met Magic Johnson, we were doing a tie in for the NBA and with the Fantastic Four. And it was the Fantastic Four versus. Magic. And he walked into the gym where we were shooting this commercial for three days. And I went, you mother, and I just swore out. You did. I did. And he burst out laughing and he went. That's right, you were Celtics guy, and I was and we laughed, and he was a gentleman and couldn't have been more gracious and amazing. And then he started to regale me with all these incredible stories about he and bird and you know, I kind of look at those guys as the quintessential sort of old warriors that they've survived all the wars and now they have no one else to relate to, but each other. The gladiators, and that's the way it felt listening to them. And I went into my trailer at the end of the three days and there were 5 signed basketballs on my desk in my trailer. And no one asked, I didn't ask him to do that. It was really, really lovely. Yeah, when he signed a bunch of basketballs and left him on my trailer, which was lovely too. So I mean, he's a class act, and was incredible, and was funny to be able to swear at him. And I said to him, magic, people think that my voice is scratchy because I smoked or something. It's from screaming at you. You know what I mean? It's from literary and screaming to be heard at my dinner table growing up. Understood. Because Greeks were allowed. But I told them the nicknames for all the Lakers from that time that we had, like, worthless. Who was it? You were there. I do love that spike. And again, that does play in winning time, one of my favorite lines of the season. Was from the scene, and I've mentioned this a couple of times on the show, so for listening and viewing audience, I apologize for repeating it. Where John C Reilly's Jerry boss is talking to Jerry West. They're having this character. This conversation about which coach is he going to stick with, which is going to go back to McKinney, or is he going to stick with west head and Riley? And he asks Jerry West for help than Jerry's like, I don't want any part of this conversation because you're going to stick me with if I'm wrong, I'm just going to stick with me and all that. And he tells us, I'm asking everybody, I'm even asking my priest in west's line is like, I don't want to ask him, he's probably Celtic fan. That made me laugh. Out loud. I was on a plane watching it coming back from New York. And I laughed out loud. Because that's exactly cursing at Magic Johnson and reminding him about all the nicknames from back in the day. And that's sort of sports spite is another thing that we love about this guy. What a great writer, the dialog is just crackled. She leaps off the page and again, you know, as an actor, that's what you're always looking for is great storytelling. And insightful and we look for truths in stories, right? It's not about people I always have this sort of missed number of, oh, you're a great actor. You must be a great liar. It's not true. It's not true. You're looking for the truth in whatever story you're telling. And people can discern what's true and what's it? That's okay. I'm so sorry. It's all right. You're comfortable and we appreciate that and you're not telling you. You're telling your story. I like it. It's all good. Well, you know, it's all good. I try to keep it clear. Actually, do you have a few more minutes to stick around here? I do. Okay, very good. Because when we come back, I want to talk about Tom Brady and I want to ask you how your dog's doing because I miss your dog. Very much. Okay. Okay. Very good. Michael checklist this year on the rich eisen show. Also, I want to talk about the Red Sox. That's coming up next on the right challenge. Thank you on the rich eisen show.

"The directions that he gave me. All right, now just terrify him right now in this take. Just absolutely. He'd come over whisper in my ear and just so John C Reilly doesn't hear? Yeah, so yes and here just absolutely terrorize him now. And I'm like, okay, Jonah crash. Well, you did. I mean, you did. It's just a fun process and really, really talented folks. And from everybody, everybody, the DP, everybody is really, really good. And Celtics are up next in this story. I'm not talking about now, but back in the day. They're up next in the story. They win next if I'm not mistaken. After we just watched the Lakers win and magic is the MVP, the Celtics are up next because magic gets hurt and then Riley comes in and I can't wait for the scene when Adrian Brody finally slicks his hair back and coming. And he suits. You know that's going to happen. And so just one last question on this, when do you start shooting? When does this happen? When we showed shooting my understanding is late August early September. it. Yeah. Yeah, and we got to come to set one. Dude, what are you doing? I'm going to talk about the crash. And then we come down and shoot a little behind the scenes. And we hold it and HBO's got their own BTS thing, but we can try. And I'll see what I do. That's what I mean. Let's see. So here we go. So you're going to be that we don't ask for it. So you get in the cigars back, you're getting the whole thing back. Well, you know, I have to say, I'm a little concerned about the cigars because I did quit smoking cigars 20 years ago. Were they real cigars? No. No. They have a, they have a tobacco wrapper, but it's a cacophony of crap inside it. It tastes like the bottom of a shoe. It's just not okay. I don't know what they put in it. I didn't want to know. It's horrible. But they make me smoke. On top of it, they have me huff in that sucker. Riley's smoking cigarettes. You can even hear it burning. Like you could hear these cigarettes burning. Now, and you know, I love the way they shoot it, though, and like.

"We can handle that by looking at it kind in a microscopic way and taking it day by day actually wanted to ask you about that. We're talking to less need. He's the general manager of the rams. Were live here on seven ten. Espn from rams training camp at uc irvine. In your job. Can you describe to everybody listening how you ultimately form the roster only in day one what positions are really up for grabs. How many roster spots do you kind of already know forty forty five. How many guys could actually out here in practice. Catch your eye. Make the team i mean. Could you just talk about in your job. How you ultimately create the roster right running backs different right all of a sudden. There's a somewhat urgent crisis so okay. Now we gotta figure out. Kim guys that we believe in they just don't have experience right came. We trust them to write. Go get that experience on the clock. But there's also this element when you have to keep fifty three players and you're built in a way where you're looking at two thousand twenty one but you're also looking at twenty three. How do you keep as many young players as possible. So there's these battles where wow we're going to have to cut some players that we've probably like you want to strategize to maybe get them the practice squad and things like that. You're always nervous so it's interesting probably position by position right. There may be like. Oh let's go back to running back coming into this camp. it was. Hey we knew are one and two. Who's going to be the third player on game. They may be active. Who's getting jersey that that person might have needed to cover kicks more than he needed to run the football now all of a sudden those guys who were battling to cover kicks are now battling to write. Carry the ball some battling to figure out. Hey can they pass pro. When it's you know when it's crunch time on third down so each position group probably has different scenarios going on in a case by case situation. How's morale from a protocol standpoint. I know things are a little different and after the after the no fan season each team guys as a different way i mean. How are you guys in terms of how you in the business of the football done at this age especially with everything. That's well. I think i think probably like everyone wants the planning and the protocols maybe the drama around that takes precedence. As you're planning in. I think once you step in to begin the two thousand twenty one season right but balls the main thing and that's going to dominate your day. And that's gonna probably take the drama out of that right but remember the protocols the vaccination all that right is put in place number one right to probably protect health. Number two is to mitigate spread and those things are important and their priority and also probably bleeds into whether you're going to have a successful season or not based on whether you lose players because of the protocol or things like that so it's all working together. It's it's just another variable but we. We went through it last year. Those lessons can be applied again this year because at the end of the right protecting health and in preventing spread is also going to bleed into right a healthier football team on sundays. Which gives us a chance to beat the enemy last. How many years you've been the general manager of the rams. You know what. I think this is going into year ten and let's see this is year five in. La two thousand sixteen was the first first year so that night the first game rams are playing the niners were standing on the field in san francisco. Oh yes i remember that. Talking about jared goff because he was the first big but he wasn't starting that game. Who's the starting quarterback. That night anybody case keenum case keenum and i remember you and i talking about that not your case keenum or six five. That guy would have been like a first round pick because his college career was spectacular but keenum to goth and here we are stafford. I mean it really is an interesting thing to watch happen as the years go on and the players changed and upgrades happen it positions especially because most people thought you guys were locked into a contract. What made you think you could get out of that or get creative about trying to get out of that. It's i think number one you've got to have you have to have ownership whose understanding and is going to allow you right to get out of that contract and and the caps the easiest thing to handle right but there's some front cash that you invested in but the the reason really gets down to. Hey there was an opportunity to add. Someone like matt stafford. I mean that's like when brett farve hit the market. He was close to forty right. When peyton manning hit the market was cut it was coming off an injury. It's very unprecedented. That a guy like matthew staffer with that experience at that position comes available. Now it's up to us to analyze. That opportunity is the opportunity worth right going for and if it is. Hey what's the cost of it and you like anything right. It's it's cost benefit analysis and we thought that the adding math matthew staff were the benefits outweighed. The cost last question. What's that place on your t-shirt bro. That sounds like a cool joint. Christie's village cafe mandates. It's my it's my favorite Neighborhood restaurant so i'll check it out when it's it may be for. My wife is probably because it's where i wanna go. Every time we go out she likes a little more variety but christie's is good breakfast. Lunch dinner what are we doing intermittent fast. So it's only dinner. But i think they do breakfast lunch and dinner but good malibu because we see how almost z. Cuisine obama man. Come on right. What'd you say. I mean from alabama right. Yes yes so. That's where they didn't do this kuzina. There's so it proves. There is some element of evolution. We all all for the good in the bed less appreciative great to have. Yeah right on day one hair it rams training camp and we are alive here. Rams training camp driven by your southern california hyundai dealers. Get the hyundai. You've always wanted. It's your journey own. it clinton..

"Less need has put on the headset. You gotta make glasses himself comfortable. How come y'all get to see practicing. I don't well you can turn around. We don't have to look at that and also you know if you really care you can watch the film later. You're not come on man really. Lets you know what it'd be good to get an independent point of view. What do you think independence. What do you think. I said to clinton. Here's what i said you're reading. I watched matthew stafford throw his first ball today. You know what. I decided super bowl champs one throat just like how do you think about that. That is that's that's limited data in a big bet. I like it. i'll tell you this. I think you guys got a great setup about out here. You know what i mean. I think these fans coming back. I think this is a fun situation. I think this is something. I'm going to ask you this. I just feel in terms of how players and how teams appreciate this kind of a setup. Here here's a story from today. i was told jodi. Camillus new special teams coach Thirty three years in the league. I think he went to tony. Pet stores who by president of football adman kind of handles our cap and said. Hey tony if anybody ever complains about this camp send my office in thirty three years. This the best in the nfl. Wow so he's got a lot of experience. So i think our players feel the i. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise has to be there has to be some rosenthal right but when you do go through a year no fans and then you come back and feel them and fill the energy. There is an element of okay. We might taken advantage of that energy that that energy when it's not there it's not there and this this is not even this practice and and then this alan iverson said practices just practice. But there's energy here. Yeah there is and i would be curious to get your feedback on. What a new quarterback a veteran quarterback with hall of fame statistics behind his his name. What does he bring to that energy with. I think the the the totality of the big picture right where team that believes we can contend right content for the division. See where it goes from there we have. We have a young team but we got a lot of core pillars core players. That are in their prime. We've got a head coach. Who's maybe in his prime. Hopefully a lot of years left but definitely in his promise and to be able to add a quarterback right. Who's got that experience. Who's in the prom. Been in the pro and to be able to come here and just fit right in and add to it and not necessarily be intimidated. Maybe by expectations intimidated by a really really impressive head coach. Play all of those things just shows you what the actual let's call it experience and pelts on the wall can do for your psych and who you really are less need joins us here on. Espn seven ten but you mentioned expectations. That's the real thing you know. New guy comes in little couple more eyeballs on the on the football team. How you all manage that in terms of who you are as a franchise never mind who you are in terms of your twenty two putting out there week one. It's interesting when there's times when i've been a part of teams right where you go while expectations are are maybe a little much it might. Maybe you were a team that played well finish nine and seven the next year. You're supposed to be a playoff team but you really hadn't made the playoffs yet. Or maybe you. You lost that playoff game and the next year. You're supposed to to win it all but wait a minute..

Data Visualization Accessibility with Sarah Fossheim

"Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you get started in the topic. I'm sarah fulltime. i'm located in norway. Oslo and i'm a designer and developer and actually got into the topic of data this and data physics disability around two thousand seventeen. I was also working on a dashboard for health data. And that's also like how i how i discovered Complex and interesting this as you said because we had to make sure that people would not make mistakes based on that thought because it handles about people's health so had to be very understandable and did my research on how to make this is understandable as possible and in the user research of trying to figure out what it was the user snead's i discovered how much of an ex disability issue graphs can be because people want to see the graphs to understands data and to make the. It's more understandable so seeing that perspective. That's how i got into it and that's also how. I got more into accessibility in itself as well. Because a lot of people in this industry i hadn't heard much about accessibility. And then as well. Once i realized the challenge at hand and the big impact it can have on people's experiences. That's when i got really interested in and started exploring it more as well. Yes and so. I think that the standard association everybody has. And here's a quick test for listeners. So if you thought of red green color scales. I think it's like the default association data is experts have with accessibility. Like oh we need to think of colorblind. People which is good which is good but it doesn't stop there. So what else are things to consider when we talk about accessibility. In data visualization yeah. I think it's funny because the reading green issue. That's one that i stumbled upon so much because when i start at my research in two thousand seventeen the majority of articles that i found on google was make sure your callers are not reading green and moving on from that actually realized the another caller thing as color interests.

At the Masters, Lee Elder Gets Another Moment in the Spotlight

"For more now on round one at the eighty fifth masters. We welcome in jimmy roberts. The voice of masters digital koi here in the opening round of eighty fifth masters. Let's let's start where it started on thursday morning. The elder joins jack nicklaus gary player as an honorary starter. And of course he broke the participant color barrier here at augusta national. What's the significance of what happened. This morning i was really moved. I mean i have been to that. Honorary starter ceremony. Going all the way back to gene. Sarazen and sam snead doing it. Lots of times these rituals. I don't wanna say they're hollow but they don't grab you this morning. Did you know it was you. could you know. I don't wanna be overly dramatic but you could see it in his eyes. You know how how much this meant to lee elder and you know looking at him. It made you think back to what he had endured. And what it must have meant to be a black man in georgia in nineteen seventy five and to be the first you know and and it it just made you think about. What did that feel like you know in the significance was just so

Oregon's Sedona Prince calls out NCAA for sexism due to weight room disparity

"Sedona prince who is a women's basketball player has had a video go viral and social media in this video. She shows the weight room that the. Ncaa is set up for the men's tournament in indianapolis then. She shows the weight rack that the ncaa has set up for the women's tournament in san antonio the men have entire spread complete with multiple fitness machines spread out over an entire ballroom floor. The women have one rack of dumbbell weights and a mat. Yep even though they too had a ballroom floor when the ncaa was asked about this they said it was a space issue and they had no room to set up an elaborate weight room for women but prints shows an entire empty ballroom that they obviously have used. Is this story something or nothing. Oh it's absolutely something. The double should be ashamed of itself. The people that set up the facilities should be ashamed. If you look at the men's training facility. i mean it's a full-on weight training facility and for the women's just this one little rack. Its like your home gym for an entire women's basketball team. Yeah i mean. I think this is the sort of equity and good for this player. I forget what team the players. I wasn't sure either but sedona prince's her name mace. I actually think not only. You're right double down on what you said. I think this could cause major fractures in the way. The ncaa is treated by the government. They're pretty a nonprofit. That gets tax. Breaks and everything else. If i was a female senator or female congressman and they don't fix this overnight. I mean overnight. I would take away some of their funding. I would take away. Some of their tax breaks this is. This violates title this. This cannot be legal based on title nine.

Going to cut him. I don't know, maybe only cares about. He probably only cares about the bottom line, so I'm probably giving Stan Kronke way too much credit on this. He probably doesn't care. Fantasy Football Forecast: One BIG THING you should know for every Week 2 matchup

"I sit out the way New Orleans versus Las Vegas raters. We saw New Orleans showcase really really solid, really great defensive performance against Tom. Brady and the buccaneers They were pretty on disappointed as a team, lot of penalties on their defensive side of the front. The saints rebel to take advantage of that. La Raiders played against the Carolina Panthers last week and gave up thirty points. It's very possible that New Orleans doesn't look as Resi as they did against a really solid defensive front in Tampa. Bay and they might have their way with a raiders team that is still kind of pretty young and trying to get their footing and all this stuff. They don't they had an injury to majority of their wide receivers in the last game. So Dan, Waller seems to be their only solid option. At the receiving side of things that might mean there in Waller's uptick in target's share and my means, he gets an ends on this year or this week maybe something good happens for him I'm buying all the stock now I'm Kamara right now for this game, this should be Alvin Kamara. KAMERA's two touchdown, a hundred yards from scrimmage plus game. This is this is the one I wouldn't see why would be any otherwise and to be quite frank. I think that a lot of players on seem to have a really big game and this would be a really fun game to see trae Kwan Smith. I'm going to bring them up again. This'll be a fun game Trey Smith. Look to be a solid. Relieving game just for brevity and sake of saving saints, fans of fantasy fans alike, some worry as to what the saints offense can look like without Michael Thomas Soaking up a lot of the defensive pressure. All right. So Fancy implications all over the place you know Josh Jacobs. This could be a really good test to see just how much they believe in Josh Jacobs as a pass catcher because I don't know how much he's going to be able to do in the run game considering New Orleans is when had and still does on one of the better run defenses in all the football. I think the best game. Pound for pound this week has to be the night game on NBC, where New England is playing against Seattle that they're going to be playing in Seattle New England the we have a kind of banged up cam and she says it's the there's no hamstring issue but. Of Most people are saying that he does, Kinda. Have a little bit of a hamstring thing going on and we'll see how that affects him with all read option stuff and what we saw from last Sunday's performance maybe we started to see cam throw a little bit more, and then we can really see just what this doing his offense really has to offer for them sure that bill will have them ready for whatever and we saw sea hawks offense that basically let Russell Wilson do what people have been asking. Them to let Russell. Wilson do for basically the majority of the back half of the dense. You know twenty seventeen was to let Russ Cook and Cook did Russell Wilson? Do He only missed four passes? He had A. Great amount of yardage great touchdown passes de que look. Nice at times he did have some drops of course, Tyler Lockett looked really good. Chris Carson looked amazing. In the past game. We had some really good screens run in for touchdowns. They got tight ends involved the plethora tight ends at the seahawks own and their defense was literally flying around all over the place. Now, there are a lot of garbage time touchdown stuff in that Falcons game that I'm not GonNa hold against the defense when it mattered. Jamal Adams and of course. Everybody else in that defense just looked phenomenal. They just looked physical. They looked like they were flying around and making plays they look very formidable as team very formidable. So. That is a game as the May have a lot of implemented implications on things so KEEP IN MIND I think one of the better secondaries in the League is New England's granted they played against. The, dolphins but they did not allow that many receptions or receiving yards at all for either receiver on the dolphins and Tyler Lockett, and care very athletic fast guys but. It's going to be tough. Is GonNa be a tough about we'll see what happens. They may have to change up the strategy of leading Russ Cook for this game in particular and work through the old tried and true run the ball and try to make something happen later on in the game. But for US Russell Wilson owners like myself I hope they just let him throw the ball a little bit more that'd be nice. That would be fun I think we'd all like to enjoy that. So moving on towards another game I think the Baltimore Game at four, twenty, five eastern standard time on CBS is going to be a good one, Baltimore versus Houston. This game can go I think Houston is a team that kid look Jacqueline Hyde and they've been jekyll and Hyde ever since the Shawn Watson is come on that team and. Not Sage. It's the Sean played bad last Thursday. But he definitely did not look comfortable one hundred percent of the time and you just was trying to make plays. His offensive line wasn't there fully stout at all and when it was time to just throw throw throw things Kinda got out of hand for Houston Houston can't be a team that gets to behind too quickly or else it is going to be nightmarish for the offensive line. And it's going to be a bad day for Shawn Watson even though he can make miracles happen at will while Samour's in perfect position to take on a team that showcase bad tackling display. So this is a team. So if this is the time where you want to be like, okay JK Dobbins, he didn't have that many targets but hey, he got two touchdowns in is the time to test out the JK Dobbins is going to be. The album? Kamara. To Marketing Rooms Mark Ingram. So we'll see what happens here Lamar he this seem doesn't tackle well, Lamar could have himself a anywhere closer to forty to fifty yards rushing easily against this team if he wants it, and of course, Mark Andrews is a guy who I would think would eat very well against the Houston team that allowed drivers Kelsey to get like five catches in the first half with ease marched up and down the field with ease Look to see how David Johnson looks in his second bout. David Johnson had a nice surprise of a Comeback Week one performance that a lot of people were speculating was possible and he delivered for the most part. So that was encouraging for many people to go ahead and see so I wouldn't. Put it past him to do it once again. That's really really against the I think that Brandin cooks is still a bit. So that would not be. Great for folks owners. And I would be looking at anybody who has. Willie snead Willie snead was all over the place last week and it was almost to a shocking amount of how much willie snead was dependent on and I said Willie snead. That was not who I meant to say I meant to say will fuller will fuller will around the field for the Texans last week and I would like to see him continue that stretch because that would be. Pretty awesome to be completely honest. I. Would like to see a will fuller healthy and showcasing that he is here to stay in this league and thus it would not make me feel nearly as bad for short.

Author Michael Murphy on 'Golf in the Kingdom'

"This is Alan ship. I am delighted to be joined by Michael Murphy author of Golf in the Kingdom still going strong eighty nine Michael. Thank you for doing this well. It's a pleasure. You have such a unique place in the game Euro Golfing Kindo as in your early forties. I'M NOT GONNA say it was a Lark but it was a you're not you're not a Gulf writer. You're not a novelist it just emerged from you in ever. Since you've been this Oracle you've been this grand old man of letters in the game you you tell shape how think about it. So are you still tickled that all these years later people are still finding this novel enjoying it? Well I I love it. I could say channel that because it was not only the first book I wrote the First Book I never tried to ride and I started it as I was turning forty and it was published in one thousand nine hundred ninety two forty seven years ago so when I was forty one so here we are now forty eight years later and it has. His Life Taught Me. I could ride so that in itself was an enormous pleasure and a big force to shape by subsequent life. I never thought of myself as a writer. My brother Was the designated writer in our family might and he had been a successful novelist and my grandfather had delivered John. Steinbeck and Salinas or you and I were both born and You know rules can get us. Signed the kids growing up and I was supposed to be a doctor and Than the more for me Thought I'd be a psychiatrist. And then got to Stanford and found myself in class on comparative religions of that led me to the philosophy and the way of life that shaped me ever since when I was nineteen and twenty but never along the way there was thought. Start writing books so anyway. When I sat down to write this book really did come in a flood. And it's Been living in me ever since I've written eight books now but that one If it were to be one of my children Children it would be among my books. It was my first child by far the most successful and I would say influential. Books are mysterious things. I like to say sometimes. Ufo's identified writing objects you W os or you are os. Son identified reading objects that can open worlds to people. And that's what's actually happened with this book with golf in the Kingdom one of the things about our shared hometown of Salinas which is just a dusty little farming community in the Central Valley known to John. Steinbeck doesn't have that much else to recommend it. It's not that far from pebble. Beach Golf links which figures prominently in my life story and and was important part of Gulf education. So tell us about your early days of playing pebble with with your brother and of course guys would haunt the Cosby Klanbake back. When he was really a big deal with Hogan snead Nelson and Bing crosby's the star in the world so is important from Stamford but it starts with your golf education before that while. That's right I mean we've had very fortunate childhoods you and I and my brother and Yes we would there be there at the crosby so I get to follow Ben Hogan around and watched him up close and personal before and after his accident. Which was in I guess January of Nineteen forty-nine so he missed that whole year in the hospital but he used to partner with Bing crosby and that was fun and Johnny Weissmuller who was the Great Olympic champion of became Tarzan. And the movies anyway. It was those great events and of course plane pebble which to this day remains by far my favorite course and it has to be. I mean there's of course in the world I think more beautiful than pebble. There are others that when you look at them would be beautiful. But to match the incredible range of moods it gets into with the shifting light the shifting fog the filaments of fog that cut across the fairways and all but anyway quyen pebble seen Some of the players in particular Hogan up close definitely was an influence on on golfing. The King wrote about it will hoge himself makes a handful of cameos in the text. Including what was it? The moved you so much about him well his magnetism on the course then he won eight out of eleven majors. He played over that period from forty eight to fifty through fifty three and he After the accident he paid just eighteen tournaments through fifty-three thickening one ten of them. He won virtually every major so he was the top of the game. He was to golf then way. Tiger Woods has been also the quality of his presence and when he would crack this out Just by the second hole at pebble for those who have been developed. Now it's then built up but there was a big field of practice in the pros as well as the onlookers. Got To sit down and watch him. Maybe there'd be hundred. Fifty people big big arena there watching him practice and it was a sight to behold because he had an immense repertoire of shots to fade to draw low high and the silence and that meant a huge impression on me and. I'm sure that as I sat down to write though I didn't plot the book or shape the book deliberately around him that influence. I'm sure was like an acorn growing into this conscious. Us of what the game could be as a kind of If you WANNA call it Yogi you can call it contemporary. You can call Chamonix even exercise golf itself is what in the eastern martial arts. Would you could call a Kata which is a series of movements. That trigger it is said are esoteric anatomy that is the complete person we are both in the flesh and in our soul are in the consciousness itself and golf swing. You could argue is an unnatural. Act It's not like running or throwing which are species learn to do and could do To survive. But you don't take a tee up a ball and hit it at the on charging tiger you know as a member of the tribe so it's an acquired skill that requires the most gypsum concentration and commitment to play it. Well and for this reason he and other reasons it evokes corresponding states of mind which can be interfered with with strong emotions whether rage or grief or sorrow which can produce by this fiendish challenge to get this small ball into this tiny hole and to go after four five hours over the course of four miles. You know. It's on the face of an absurdity. A why are we doing this? And that can occur to while playing. Why am I doing this but you do it? And you have these incredible pleasures and experiences and then as I've discovered through Responding to the book experience you have to call super-normal Mr Cool or cold. In other words the game can do that and It helps to be in a beautiful place like Pebble Beach. The you bring to this conversation. Just leaps off the page. I mean that's I think why the book is in bird because as you say it's this pursuit of ours is is maddening. It makes no sense but we do it anyway. And we were able to put a voice to having a correspondent. Brad faxon about the book and he said what I love about it is it made it okay to to speak of these things and you gave us in vocabulary to this experience at the golfers of had. But I you can get those tools so you matriculate to Stanford and as a fellow Salinas Person. I know it's not the most open minded place to Nag towns little conservative. But you have sort of a life altering experience stafford and what exactly happened well. I was so inspired by this professor. Frederic Spiegelberg he them a born and raised in Germany and Taught was teaching Stanford Comparative Religions so I got exposed to eastern philosophy and meditation contemplation than and particularly the world view of Indian philosopher. A named Sheera window who had been educated in England very elite education. His family had instructed his patrons in England never to let him speak any Indian language so he wanted to English but he was a philosopher and writer kind of a renaissance figure and developed a worldview. That's been the most basic influence on me. There are many influences of prompted me to do what I've done and of course the mystery is. Why chose this story? I could have gotten so many other directions but I consider myself very lucky. A Norman Mailer. The writer argued that every aspiring writer is given one free one by God and that was my free one and it was the first one and it in turn golf in the kingdom has shown me that this birth of new capacities is much more common than most people realize because immediately upon publication people started letting me know about their mystical experiences called experiences on golf courses. I wrote the book on some inspiration but I if you had asked me then that people would be having experiences you know immediately lawyer. New York wrote to me and was just couldn't get over this book. It helped him understand that. How on this particular occasion he'd been standing on the T. of four hundred yard and there were no players between him and his forces have been the green said he could see clear. A ball marker the size of a dime on this whole quarter of a mile away. Two of his playing partner couldn't even see the green. I got it was there. So he wondered. Is this the sort of thing you're talking about or a woman rights to me right away and says the yearbook helped me in? Because not long ago I was playing the eighteenth hole of at my Country Club as the sun was setting and when we got to the green the sun had set but it was still shining through the green and I felt that maybe this was some after glow on my is some retinal shock or something but when they went into the clubhouse who shining through the walls and it shown like that for three days and I was in an exaltation and thank you for writing the book because I found author who bite understand this experience so when you then I started getting these things. It pushed me in the direction of seeing the genius of sport to elicit this experience but not reported by sportswriters very often. You know there've been a few writers who have glimpsed this John Updike. He recognized this and Bernard Darwin. You know the great writer grandson. Charles Darwin he read the links of either down one of his short stories. I mean he certainly could see it. The mystery of golf by Arnold Hall Taint. So there's been a vein of golf writing that shows this power of the game not only to enchant but to reveal these capacities so that in turn has led me into other sports. And so I've been out to meet with coaches and players of ever since about what you would call the inner game of Sport and that Inter has led me to appreciate how prevalent it is in everyday life but not commonly discussed and recognized until recently. Thank you God for giving me go for the Kingdom as my first book.

"So You you said you were chasing tiger woods around today. How did he do? Not as good as he did on Thursday You know there's a lot of hope for tiger woods around this tournament because he's the host of it and he's chasing snead and eighty three wins. Two breaks needs record. He's never won here. The best he's ever done twice was second in a tie for second but that was a long time ago but there was a lot of hope for tiger going in and of course on the first hole on Thursday he makes an Eagle Putt to start his day to get the two under. And how far is that Eagle? Putt twenty four feet eight inches. You know and him and Kobe were friends. So there was a lot of Karma there with that. Start but to be honest with you. Tiger looks tired on his second nine. Both days I mean. He looked really good on his first night. Shot four under on Thursday but then on Friday you can see. He had no legs left in his swing and a lot of that has to do with everything that comes with being the host of a tournament. We saw tiger doing things I had never seen him do before six interviews with local. Tv stations which he matvere does it a regular event but when you're the host of event it's kind of what you gotta do.

"He made a good point. A real good coach is going to want to bring at least one of their coordinators backyard. Brian Westbrook talking to England patriots. Who still have a little work to do if they want a first round bye? They need either a win against the dolphins this this weekend or a chiefs loss to the chargers should be easy in theory as the Patriots. Crush Miami forty-three nothing earlier in the season but Brian Patriots. Absolutely if they want any chance of making another super bowl I think they do what they want to have a chance. I don't know that they have a huge chance. But if you WANNA have a chance you certainly need that by you. Need those home playoff games and it's because Tom Brady hasn't been great on the road even though these special at home and all the road Game with all the home games that they've had all those super bowls that they won on the road in the playoffs. He's been four and four and so when I watched his team all season long. I look at this team in the first eight Games the defensive scoring they're getting special place from the special teams averaging almost thirty points again right. Then I'll watch the last seven games. I'm watching his team. Defensively still get some big plays. You're you're not getting the scores. The special teams still some big plays. You're not getting as many scores that way in ostensibly only score averaging twenty points a game. That's a big difference and so having that home owned by having the ability to get adamant healthy. I think is going to help this team giving Tom Brady. An older quarterback a little bit of a break certainly helps us football team but plane at Gillette. Let Stadium it's the biggest part that's going to help this patriots often. They unquestionably need to buy all right. They've never won the super bowl without the by. They've never been to a super super bowl without the by okay and that's when their offense was really good. They still couldn't get over the Hump Without that so they definitely need it now. And they're playing you know. I don't think it's just coincidence. Maybe I'm you know wear rose colored glasses but I don't think it was just a coincidence that last week now. The play offs or nearing that. Tom Brady plays better. That the running game gets on track and I think they're going to be playing their best football at the right time I don't think they'll win the AFC. I don't picked him as a favorite. But I do give him a shot. I get more overshot. The Nick does but they'd still need to buy no matter. What and bill check is the best in the league? I don't think anybody I dispute that at preparing for the opponent. Fifteen and five in the regular season off a bye week and they're gonNA need it if face Kansas City in the in the second round they're going going to need the extra time to prepare for Pat Mahomes and that's something case. He has to worry about because ballot check with two weeks to prepare is dangerous. We saw what he did to Sean. mcvay Hey and that's still you still see the repercussions from that with the RAM. So yeah they need to buy week and if they get it. I think they'll be relatively dangerous. Let's let's think about this from a slightly different angle. If they don't get a by it means that after they finally for the first time in two months played a great football game against against the bills with the division on the line in theory. They lost at home to the dolphins a seventeen point favorites. So if they don't get the by then everyone. AH The train that I've been writing is near Solo conductor for the last year or so that the Patriots are done and we are just waiting waiting to see the official it will be overrun with folks jumping on with no tickets. If they don't want to buy. Because it will mean it will mean Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Flora's former Patriots defensive coordinators that go to my moods. I think it's an interesting wrinkle. This game went to Foxborough and beat them in a game. They needed to have so if they don't have a by. They're they're drawing debt. Now drawing slim drawing dead not only because they have their extra playoff game but because they would've played their single worst game of the season in their game that will be set that six or seven days before their playoff game with a by. I still am not a believer that a team that to my I played one complete game of football. Both sides of the ball all for four quarters one time in the last eight weeks is all of a sudden going to be able to do it against the two best teams in the conference. Kansas City in around one around to at home and then in Baltimore in round three now Is there a scenario. Where Tennessee gets the six seat upset? Kansas City and so new England then gets Buffalo Houston and then Tennessee goes to Baltimore. Upsets them if the Patriots Path is the bills and in the titans and both games are in. Gillette is yeah I suppose there. There's your one percent but a realistic path involves them having to face Kansas City again and one note on that they're thirty and ten in the postseason under Belichick and Brady which is just a bananas. He's fact they've played forty playoff games one thirty of them. They're seventeen and one against teams. They did not play in the regular season the only time. They've lost a playoff game against the team. They were facing the first time was the super bowl to nick. Foles in the eagles they are thirteen and nine which is good but not overwhelming against teams. They are facing for a second time so one of the narrative heard is on the Patriots. The second time around in the postseason that has not been the case for them. If you're going to get them do need to have faced them earlier in the year to have shot at the giants teams that beat them in the super bowl. Both of them played lead them in the regular season. So what Kansas City in Baltimore have in common. They played them in the regular season. Houston as well if somehow they have like Houston so for all those reasons with even with the by. I'm not buying them but without by they got no shot because it means they lost the Miami game they need it with their by and you made a great point Chris. The two weeks off is huge because it gives Bella checking opportunity this game differently. I remember we played them in the Super Bowl and of course there's a two weeks between the last regular season game the postseason game in the championship and and the Super Bowl so we're preparing for two weeks straight to face a three four defense. Three down linemen four linebackers. They come out in a four three four three linebacker so offensively offensively. Your mind is blown because they changed everything up but in that two weeks period. They've done a total shift in their completely different defense. Something they hadn't shown all year long. That's what whatever team that comes into. Gillette maybe facing if they get that by. That's GONNA be huge. I brought this up earlier. That's a lot of that falls on Bill Belichick. Now I mean you know we. We haven't seen the best of Tom. Brady this is where we always have this debate that we've had for years and years brainier. Isabel check while Brady has clearly fallen off the peak where he's been if gp don't think this maybe.

You Contain Multitudes of Microplastics

"Scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm any Snead, plastic is lightweight knowledgeable, durable. But it also become so widespread that it's ending up in a lot of unwanted places including our own bodies. That's according to a new study, which found that humans are consuming shocking amount of so-called, micro-plastics micro-plastics kinda current working definition is plastic less than five millimeters. So people commonly quite that to something like a grain of rice, or assessments seed and down in terms of size class. I will say that most micro-plastics if people are interacting with our quite a bit smaller than the sesame seeds size which, I think always kinda shocked people when we start talking about the numbers because they kinda can't, you know, they can't see a lot of these things at least with the naked eye, Karen, Cox apiece, g candidate marine biology at the university of Victoria in Canada. One of the authors of the study, which is in the journal environmental science and technology micro-plastics come from numerous sources they can shed from larger plastics, or they may have been designed small to begin with further study, Cox and his team pulled together past scientific literature that calculated the number of micro-plastics in things we commonly consume such as tap and bottled water sugars seafood. Even in the air that we breathe, this analysis, help them figure out the baseline amount of micro-plastics that people are consuming every year. They couldn't include common foods like beef, poultry vegetables, in dairy in their analysis because data on them doesn't exist yet. In fact, their study could only account for fifteen percent of people's caloric intake, even missing the majority of what people swallow the research, revealed that at the very least humans appeared consume somewhere between seventy four thousand one hundred twenty one. Thousand micro classic particles every year, that number goes up for people drinking bottled water rather than tap water. Now is all this plastic safe to ingest? Scientists simply don't know, yet kind of the first estimate of dose, you could say rights with your thinking, in terms of toxicology Eco-Toxicology dose is very important factor to think about. And so this kind of presents the first estimate, but it is very much a underestimate, because of what we don't know. "Which would tie him with Sam Snead has got eighty two and Tigers got eighty one right now and a lot of the golfers who had media villa abilities. Today were asked questions about, you know, Tigers Eighty-one and this answer by favorite Rory mcilroy. I thought was pretty interesting to have the average that he's hot and obviously it win season when seasons whatever it is. You know, if he does surpass that direct Korda's needs. Yeah. I mean, I in my book, just no one difficult, it is in this day and age to not an astonishing in any damage to to win on tour. It's almost more impressive than the fifteen. So let me ask you eighty two eighty three PGA wins, all time more impressive than fifteen major victories. Ooh, man, that is a good one. I'm going to say that when you counterbalance the number of regular tour just overall tour wins with the fifteen it, I still put Jack ahead of them. I think the may because nobody ever talks about the fact that Jack Nicklaus also has nineteen runner ups in major so I'm gonna go when you have almost forty combined. First second place, major finishes. I think I think it's the majors. Then when you take away, the majors out of that total. So now you're at what sixty five total wins? A lot of those are still impressive again. They're not throwaway tournaments. Tiger played a lot more at the beginning when he was think at one point, they were saying his winning percentage was like fifty percent. It was something silly, the clip that he was on for quite a while when he was world number one for years, so on and so forth. I'm going to go with the fifteen majors. And here's why the the field at all of the majors. Not it's never week ever ever, ever, ever, ever, and are guys who went three majors, and, you know, five or eight you know, regular to or wins that would call that incredible career. So I'm going with I think the majors is harder simply because the field that's there for every one of them. The I'm gonna have to agree with both of you. I think ROY makes a good point. But there's just nothing quite like winning a major championship. There's nothing quite like the US open the British Open, more so than, you know. The WG see event but that'll be it remains to be seen. Look, if he's even in contention on Sunday. Honeybees Can Put Two and Two Together

"This is scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm any Snead it takes the big brain a human brain to do math, or so you might assume, but scientists have found that other animals such as chimpanzees monkeys and even pigeons can perform some addition and subtraction. Now new research shows that the honeybee with a brain the size of sesame seed can perform basic math researchers put honeybees through one hundred trials to try to train them to add and subtract. They put the bees in a y shaped maze and presented them with a certain number of either yellow or blue shapes yellow indicated the beach should subtract while blue meant they should add the be then entered the decision chamber where it was presented with a correct answer. On one side an incorrect answer on the other side if they pick the right answer they were rewarded with the sugary solution. If not they got bitter tonic. Water. The researchers also put the bees through another test trial without a reward or punishment to make sure there weren't any scent marks influencing the bees choices at first the beast picked answers at random, and you say that the ability of the base to do it in stop the chance of which is fifty percent showing us the Beza just choosing randomly. But over time the competence comes up to about eighty percent. I think sir the actions that poem quite while. Scarlet Howard, one of the study authors a post doctoral research, fellow neurobiology in cognition at Paul Batty university in France, she says the bees were even able to add and subtract correctly when presented with a number. They had never seen before the studies in the journal science advances things like this can let us know that there's a lot of complexity there and the debris in mind. Not as simplistic as we want. Cod Could Cope with Constrained Climate Change

"This is scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Anne Snead. Clears coral reefs are obvious victims of climate change. But a warming rolled will also challenge. Many other animals, for example cod. The fish play a critical role in marine ecosystems in human economies climate change could devastate Atlantic employer cod. A team scientists wanted to find out how rising sea temperatures ocean acidification might affect these fish populations when the old with all research vessel into the barn c and called Atlantic caught and Buller Cottam brought them back alive into research facility. Another Norway Fleming, doc marine biologist at the Alfred Wagner institute in Germany. And then this facility we raised the eggs and Lavi under different temperature ocean acidification. Mimicking the conditions expected for the next case to come. The researchers place the eggs in larvae in various carbon dioxide concentrations as well as three different temperatures scenarios one the business as usual scenario for humans continue to make greenhouse gases at current rates an ocean waters increase three to four degrees celsius. They also tested in intermediate scenario of two degree celsius rise and a best case scenario where water temperatures rise only one degree then recorded a survival rates in larval development. The results were pretty clear. So so what we found is that with Olsen ocean acidification, the eggs become more sensitive to temperature extremes. So this means that there are some tolerance range narrows, and that we found for both thesis, and we also found that the use more energy to regulate against the stress of temperature and Oceana. Acidification the studies in the journal science advances. And when we use these data in combine them with the temperature with the climate projections, we find with the worst case scenario that will be decrease in exa vibe chances of about fifty percent and many of the important spawning areas of those species other these populations might be able to adapt by shifting their spawning grounds northward. The question is if the species will find also suitable feeding conditions in those attorney to spawning areas, so it could be that the temperature is right. But they won't find enough food up in the north big changes in cod populations will likely have ripple effects Qatar food for many other animals like birds in seals in countries, like Norway, depend on the income that caught fisheries hall in. But the new research also offers a bit of good news on the positive side. We. Find that in the scenario where we successfully limit global warming to one point five degrees, both pieces would be able to successfully reproduce in those areas where they as born currently. Thanks for listening for scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Anne Sneed.

"You were bitter about because you were raised as just kind of a second tier citizen is just second class citizens, but we couldn't go to country club unless you shag balls or something like that. And I got to learn who the great golfers were HOGAN and Snead in in those type of guys as players. And then of course, I followed long was Arnold Palmer because he was from Latrobe Pennsylvania, and I'm from Pennsylvania, and whether you were staying use your Joe Montana or Arnold Palmer or any of the guys from from Pennsylvania. You just rooted for them, you know, and so I got to be not necessarily part of Arnie's army 'cause I never could go to vent, but I've followed golf because Arnold Palmer. And then I didn't like Jack Nicklaus when he came along because he was better than Arnie. However, I met Jack Nicklaus and his wife, and he was so kind of person. Yes. So gentle of a person. And when Jack Nicklaus started playing he was kinda pudgy, you know, he he he's the bear. Okay. And they call him fat. Jan. Yup. But you know, when you followed in recognize that kind of greatness, and then of course, Gary Player Leetch venial, and, you know, white cough and all those guys gosh, Tom Watson in those players, and they got to be so good. And they they represented the country. Very well. And so I just liked golf as a kid. I never played much golf because I you know, we weren't allowed on golf courses as colored kid, and I use the term colored because that's what it was back there. Right. Yes. And I still use the term at time. If I'm worth with was brothers or somebody like, Mike, I'll say what me, you know. Reggie how you feel good. For color, man. Which gives you a communication and translation where it makes them close. There's a closeness to the term. Yeah. Okay. And so I'll I'll use the term in bonding or or building relationship when I see a guy like Mike is recognized him on on the golf course. Whether it's to be aired or or or the chunky nece. He's a brother that's doing well and abandoning an advancing the cost. Yeah. Okay. So, but I have always been a golf golf fan like the etiquette of it. I like the class of it. And I admire the greatness of the player, she young and old. How did you not let you not being allowed on a course to play? How did you not let that make you bitter about the sport and still continue to play in these programs? And he's love the game. It it does. I still have a residual of difficulty. I live in Pebble Beach, California. They have maybe one or two. I don't think I think one African American member at Cyprus I've only played at once. So I'm I'm I'm it's painful for me to go by it's painful to me to to live there and have never really been invited. Or asked to join. I would love to to join I've been invited to Augusta several times with Ozzie Smith the rebels down in place every year after spring training. And I've always been a little uncomfortable to go because I remember when they wouldn't allow us to play, you know, blacks or could only catty that center at cetera. So it still does impact me because of I have a residual just just the difficulty of of the memory came up during a time when? Yes. That was normal behavior. Where now it's the almost the exact opposite. Yes. And so, yeah, there's going to be a little bit residual like I can tell you that it be short nineteen sixty four five. I remember when they allow Negros to vote, and I was eighteen nineteen years old. Wow. That's man. That's just fast for the big picture of time. That is not a long time.
