Stories That Scale with Casey Graham
"I'm your host. Daniel tardy and my guest today is casey graham cases. The ceo of company called gravy. Maybe you've heard of them. Probably have because all they sponsor this podcast. We've been telling you about them. These guys are friends. They're good people and they share the vision of helping business owners win. That's what we're all about here. In case he's built an entire company around that one principle that if you'll show up and love your customers after they become a customer that creates a winning business guys. You can't just look at the the sale taking place as the finish line. Not the finish line for your customer. It's the starting line and you've got to deliver excellent with your service until you get them to become a customer for life everything you want out of your business doesn't come from getting your customers pay one time. It gets them if paying time after time. And so you know. In every survey you read for entrepreneurs they want freedom. That's the thing they want whether it's time freedom or money freedom and all that stuff you don't get freedom by getting people to pay you one time you get freedom people paying you consistently time after time and so my thing is not just yes. Let's take care of customers. Yes let's love them because they're people yes let's serve them well but also if you want to get what you want on your business this is where it is it comes after they start paying and that's why we just always say hey one of the best things you can do is pay attention to paying people. Pay attention to pay people. And that's our mantra. We talk about all the time. And that's why we do what we do. We talk an entree leadership that one of the six drivers of a peak performing business is obviously you have to have a great product or service but the way that you deliver that doing it with excellence doing it in a way. That makes them go. Wow wow these are people they care. They went above and beyond. They're not like comcast or these companies that just don't have a heart and we call them. Go you know. They've got my money but i hate it and i'm trapped. These people actually are giving me more value than i expected What are the key to doing that. Yeah a couple of things is is understanding number. One that they're human beings like they're not they're not a number on a dashboard or a spreadsheet and so what i see is that that business owner spent so much time looking at dashboards they forget that these people really have like real lives and real stories and real stuff going on and really busy and somebody's got sick and their family and there's crisis and have fear and they have all these things going on in the beginning point of anything that you create and what you guys have done so well entreleadership and what davis done so well is rose understanding these are humans and start there and celebrate there and live there instead of. We want to get all these customers. Well one of the first things we always do is we say people's names like we tell stories about real actual people and that's the first place that we say star. That's that's number one were human. You know it's interesting you say that i think we're all susceptible to forgetting at scale especially we get a lot of customers starting to watch percentages of increase or decrease in. It's just a dashboard is in a way to try to get your head around all these numbers and all this stuff. But if you're not careful we forget these people one thing. I have right here in the studio just to help me when we're having these conversations is a picture of actual entreleadership customers. I'm looking at a amanda. She's executive director of brain ballots center. She's gonna franchise to help with Childhood development she's in orlando florida. M looking at her face. As i speak right now and several of them because here in podcast i wanna remember. This isn't about just making a great podcast. There's people out there like amanda who are listening. And what's going on anna's world today. I don't know she might be scared. She might be excited. She might have just had a record. Mont she might decide to lay somebody off. That was really hard. And so i think what you're saying is really important that we have the faces and the names of our customers and their stories front of mind for us all the time. How do we do that to Level of making sure that our team remembers this who were here for because we have certain pieces of our teams that aren't necessarily frontlines the administrative side of the business the accounting side of the business. Obviously sales is out in front. They're interacting with customers. How do we make sure our whole team remembers the names. The faces in the stories. Yeah we'll internally so. I think it comes with culture of what we celebrate. You know we always talk about what get celebrated gets repeated and it. It's true inside a gravy. We have something called gravy biscuit and slack. Meaning that when we catch somebody doing something right Or they live out our core values. Somebody who call out a gravy biscuit because we're a virtual company so we don't get to see all of this and so we throw it up in the s the gravy biscuit in one of those is around the idea of doing unscaled things for people because delaying unsalable things. Like for instance. If somebody ops out of your email newsletter literally texting them getting on the phone and calling him and saying hey listen i just don't you opted out of bundy's letter and i'm just calling you. I don't want you back in. I just want to understand why. And you give me your perspective on it and then you end up doing that. You stalk them on social media you see that they like smoothie king you send them a smoothie king gift card and that one unscaled thousands. You can't do for hundreds but you could do for one because what we found about things. Is that the story scales so you can scale the story of the unscaled things. And that's what creates the magic internally of doing. Andy stanley says do for one what you wish you could do for every one yes and then oftentimes when you catch people doing something right you scale that story and then you shared over and over and over again.

"Smoothie King ruled the day So money spin offs. You know a time. There wasn't a lot of spin offs in the sixties or the fifties. This show on the family generated so many so many spinoffs. The first one was Maude. Correct. Yes. You know the word spin up. Always interested me. I always thought about you Bring on a player that you think I can't work in his or her own show. And she's kind of a Bush league player on DH. You're what you're trying to do is groomer or him for the major. That's that was the terminology. I always Okay, thinking about it. What we wanted on all in the family. We wanted somebody to come along that would reached through the depth of a lot of years. Beats the hell out, you know? But I learned something like an old relative with a gret. Yeah, You didn't invite her to the wedding. How could you have done 27 years ago? That person coming at you with that? More was ah, Cousin, a za girl and best friends of either. Yeah, The whole family was sick. The whole family was sick, and Marty was called to come. Take care. I remember the episode. It was absolutely vintage because it was the first time I think I saw Archie Really beat up by somebody that with it needed to be either playing that role with that grudge that came back from that came over the years. Now, now from Maud came good times. Didyou get flak at the time. Because of the portrait trail of this black family. You know, in Chicago that it was, it was more negative. We got flak. Ah, couple of years in there was some slack. Some of it was helpful because it was about why Ah, right is the only black character Uh, supporting a family working three jobs. Why is it not the truth in America, people move up. Move on. And several, uh African American newspapers carried stories like that are hints of that, Uh, feeling. And that motive we were taking about them. Actors, uh, do the Jeffersons, but it's certainly motivated. Moving on up. Absolutely right. Right. Right. Right. Which I would say you Remmy remedy that with another sitcom. So the Jeffersons and I forgot, you know, obviously. The Jeffersons came after good times and in it surprises me always because really, they were, you know, so proud. Prevalent in the first season of of the show when you develop those characters, you know Isabel Sanford and I know Sherman Hemsley came a little bit later. Did you ever think in your in the back of your mind? Here is another show or did it come to kind of later? If you did good times. Bush league characters Wherever I mean, you couldn't you couldn't hire a good actor without wondering if that good actors shouldn't move up. And, ah, that motivated this. Much of the thinking. Is anything else would never find us see this glorious performer in his or her own shop? Sure. And then there was one day to time and and read that they're you know when Maude you know when, when the abortion issue came up on Maude, this was a episode originally written for Bonnie Franklin. On one day at a time. What decided to go a different route in a whole different show with this with this subject matter. Well, it was written originally on. Not that it was the same script that you know that was finally done because Joan Harris, who later created Golden, Gross wrote, It's responsible for the abortion episodes on all in the family. The one. I can't remember who it was the team that wrote it for Bonnie Franklin. But we were. I don't remember exactly why we have made it. But we've certainly intended to make it when somebody came in with a newspaper article about a woman in her seventies that was raped. And as we talked about, Dad, we saw it. You know, rape is usually considered what? What they look for. First is what What was the girl doing to entice the guy horrible, which they're sure to her spiritually short of So this kind of thinking, uh, and speculation And certainty that older woman I ever seen this story are rape to cause us to say, Let's do it with Jean and not with a young woman. Gotcha! Gotcha. Well, I will tell you, you know, one day the time. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman Fernwood Tonight, Sanford and son. So many others. Silver spoons, fax the life different sorts That just came from you Square Peg. Well, you know, giant collaborating. Absolutely. But still out of out of all the other shows outside of all in the family. What show? Would you say? You're most proud of outside of all in the family? Well, I would say more good times. Ah, Okay. All right, All right. All right. Fair enough at one spectacular thing about it. And that was that it's It's set up something at the beginning. And, uh, you know, it was on five nights a week, so there were several 100 episodes. And it concluded on the same thing, which began it wished to explore the impact of the media on a simple housewife. And the media drove her crazy and her on the data stuff Kind show. Uh, as result of the inquiry of three, the hard hitting media bullshit. I can't say that. Can I, uh, whatever you like, Uh, they drove her crazy and that's one of the best acting jobs have ever seen. Very cool. Very cool. Now I have also, I also know you've stayed very active over the decades to speak up for the bill of rights, obviously producing these shows. I would think you would. You would have to be in specifically the First Amendment. You know the people for the American way. In the late eighties, you began the Environmental Media Association to make sure that the entertainment industry was, you know, environmentally responsible, which is very early on when you think about the early Excuse me the late eighties. Declare yourself to get people out to vote on countless others. And here's a little known fact that I think people might not know in 2001. You and your wife purchased one of the first published copies. Of the United States. Declaration of Independance. How cool was that? Patronymic. Okay, this was one of 26, known to exist in the world was the only one in private hands. And, uh uh, it was this group were printed the night of July 4th 17, unlike the one that was signed that was signed over months. Uh and, uh, and there's only one copy. But this was printed to be sent by horseback around the 13 colonies. And there are 20 something left. And so I looked at it as our country's birth certificate. The night of And we had the best time in the history of good signs. Uh, sending it around the country with the cooperation of major Watchers in the U. S Postal Service. It was fabulous. Well, that's what I love about. It is not only did you purchase it, though, but you, you you took it on the road. You let people see it. You shared it with a country that's pretty. Didn't I hear you? I hear you. I'll tell you what nominated for an Academy Award induct into the television. And he has bragged about the medicine cation that he has taken and again their articles by medical professional saying this could, as I said earlier. Could have an impact on judgment. So to be clear, because a lot of folks are wondering the speaker of the House does not think at this point that the president of the United States should transfer power. No, I don't think the president should That that is what President Reagan did. That is what President Bush did. President H W. George Herbert Walker Bush? That was President George W. Bush did but s O. This is ah, a path on how that Can happen further. If the president is incapacitated or cannot make the judgment about his own transfer of power could be you. President Trump needs to transfer You don't think he needs to transfer power right now, just because he's that's not my positive. It's not my judgment. It's not my judgment. That's why we're establishing this specifically tohave a bipartisan Permission to make the kind of judgment God we're into something just never ending sons. Never ending stunts is where we are Now. My opponent means take a drug test. We're going to replace you because you're on medication. Just we just that's the world we live in now. Never ending stunts. Ah, Anybody even suggested that like anti viral medications, render you fit for office. Ever. What are you talking about? You crazy old bag? We are in the era of since I don't know why Trump wouldn't turn this around. So happily take a drug test so you can see every drug that I'm on and discuss with doctors. I think Joe Biden should also right, Let's do it. Let's do it this afternoon. We do with seven wall being a cop, and we'll go over. The drugs were on duty Trump Bill in Nevada rights Guys. "Smoothie King ruled the day Never heard of this guy before. All of this started for those of you wondering what's going on this. D J V shows Friday the ninth Doug Staffan, Jennifer Horn, Victoria Keelan music in this hour 23 after the hour. Starting with a focus on country singer Morgan Waylay isn't waving a wallet is not going to be the guest. Supposedly this weekend on S N l. He breached Koven protocols, the head of his appearance on the program. It was a video apparently opposed to do his instagram account. He didn't special by how he would He has reached the protocols, but said his actions were pretty short sighted. They've obviously affected my long term goals in my dreams, he said. He apologized SNL. Fans of what is Who is this guy? A new up and coming a country star. I saw him in concert He opened for Luke Bryan a few years ago under stadium. He's kind of a I don't know, I'd say definitely. Every the country singer to me and it isn't makes him stand out of it, he said. Lauren Michael's encouraged him by saying they'll find it in time to have him on the show is a musical guest said That meant a lot to him. He's planning work on himself after the incident. What is what was because he was a jackass, and he admitted it. He said. He was immature. He has a lot of growing up to do. And he was partying down into in Alabama last weekend without a mask on he was captured on social media, not social distancing. And so, SNL said, Look, we can't risk the entire cast and crew here because of you being a jackass. So I get it. But SNL is very SNL has always they have big names established names, but they also always book people that are just on the cusp of being, you know, mainstream, and I think that he, Morgan Wall in is probably one of them. It's also nice that they're adding more varieties. I don't recall seeing a country acts on SNL in a long time. I don't recall but anyway, so there's no musical guest this weekend, but I don't know what they're gonna do. I don't know they'll give another skin little dump on Trump. Given please. It's only in the open's Yeah. You don't watch the whole thing. I don't want any of it anymore because I know, right? I had enough politics by Saturday night. And you're just leaving. Yeah, well, have a laugh anyway. All right, the focus on Eddie Van Halen appropriate in the fact that he passed away this week. There's something strange he thought his tongue cancer was caused by putting guitar picks in his mouth. What did some doctor didn't tell him with the story that it was the it was put in the same spot using like metal. Yeah, he didn't use the plastic picks that most guitar players use. He used ones that are brass and copper amalgam. And so he said, he always thought it was suspicious that in the exact spot where he got the tongue, cancer is where the pic would always be in his mouth. I don't know. I mean, look, stranger things have happened. A lot of doctors said. Oh, that can't happen. But I don't know. I don't think I think it's a little more than coincidental. Well, maybe it is the other thing. And this goes back to what Ed McMahon died of Very few people during that era that had more time in front of television camera or on a set. And there's all kinds of electromagnetic energy flying around in those studios, where he realized he had bone cancer, and I've always thought Jennifer That that was the cause of it. Frankly, it's a It's a theory. I'm used to a lot of drugs certainly smoked all the time. We did a lot of everything. But he said My lungs are totally clear my own theory. But the doctors say it's possible so, he said. There's a lot of tribute going on his ex wife, Valerie Burton. Ellie confirmed that He was eventually undergoing treatment for lung cancer. A first publicly shared the news of his cancer in 2011 apologized to fans on the band website. I'm sorry for having waited so long. Address the issue. Personal even cancer can be a very unique in private matter to deal with 53,000. People will get oral cavity or aural far, luv. Sharon Gerald, It's the Yeah Yeah. Cancer this year anyway, it's broader smoking and drinking and doing bad stuff being exposed to bad things kind of crap in the atmosphere that's for sure. So At any rate doesn't take away from the story. The two things important to remember about him was his talent and the music that he left behind and a lesson. Somehow or other to be learned from the way he lived his life 28 a half of the hour on the D. J V program. Some people are open to feedback. Others aren't this is emotional management. I'm Dr Christian County. Some people are eager to hear feedback. They thrive on it because they know that feedback is the on ly way for them to improve what they're doing. Other people have a much more difficult time handling feedback, and that's mostly because they take feedback about their performance. Personally. Feedback about what you do, however, is not the same thing as feedback about who you are, and those who are the best at what they do truly understand that take the time to learn to separate..

State of the art well, It's been it's Europe in Asia for years. And Americans have finally gotten onboard over the last decade or so. But They're very popular. I know in our business. We have been installing them briskly. And designing them. We just completed a project with one which was a unattached master suite, right? Because you snore. Like crazy. I knew that I had a problem. When everybody got up at a boy Scout campout and vacated the space that we were bunking in. When I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, everybody was gone. Why? Yeah, it's the truth that they were about 30 fathers. With sleeping bags and I woke up. They were all gone. And the next morning at breakfast. I said What was up, guys? You're snoring. But all the animals came up to vote. One of the guy I suggested, you know, I used to snore like that. And I found I had sleep apnea. So I had a sleep study and I ended up with a CPAP now. What did the C PAP do? Well, the C Pap Aside from looking like Darth Vader, it gave me sleep that I had not experienced for many, many years. Can I started to dream again? I started having vivid dreams and who was amazing? "Smoothie King ruled the day Good to be back with you after a couple days off watching our white socks, So you know, sad They're not in the playoffs anymore. They're out but excited about the future. But I keep hearing from all my favorite White Sox fans and friends and you know, here's the White Sox official Tweet can't wait to see what's next. I'll take that. And good luck to our copies, right they play today. So in a world of strangeness, uncertainty and bizarro happenings. There is one thing I'm sure of. If you wrote 2020 as a movie there, unknown submitted it. The pitch. People on the Hollywood folks would say no, no, no. Too much gelatin thiss. The back could never happened. Then come on. Come on Too much too outrageous, too improbable. This stuff. You couldn't write it this way, and people wouldn't believe it. If you weren't living it, that's where we are. You know, there's a phrase I used to say before 2020 and I do not say it anymore. Used to say this I no longer say it. The phrases that'll never happen. That come on battle. Never. I used to say that all the time. I do not say that anymore. That is not part of my vocabulary. That is not a phrase I use anymore. I don't know about you. I'm almost scared to say that. Well as a Sox fan, and not a Cubs fan. Something I never had to say was, there's always next year and with everything that's been canceled this year, I find myself saying, there's always there's next year. I You know, it was funny because there's a lot of sadness when it first happened. But now what? I'm hearing from White Sox fans everywhere. Just just come on. Hey, look at what we got to see this season. Excited about what's to come. There was a season and they were good. So those are both wins, right? Yes, I like the positivity Jordan. I love that. We need that any more than Honestly all day just reading these terrible stories. We need something good. Yeah, we do. We do. And let's let's hope for a speedy recovery for the president and first lady. That is not something I predicted on the list of things again that I thought never would happen That happened. But I'm encouraged seeing folks across the political spectrum like Joe Biden sending well wishes to the president. Very classy thing to do you know, saying that he's praying for the health and safety of the president. You got it. You know, it's it's just times like this is not politically. No, There's um There's a mockery out there. I've seen that, too, in matter what you think about that It is a health situation, so I hope everything's okay there. But so I want to ask you this. It's still 2020 write the next chapter. What improbable thing do you think happens next? Now? It's not like I'm wishing this Yeah, but I don't want it to happen. I'm done if we had no more ex significant events, and nothing big happened, and that was it. For us to have to endure that I would be happy with that. I just wonder is 2020 not over yet, Right? It's not a lot of funny stuff. Sure, Okay, we need to know you got one because no, Because I'm worried about this virus mutating and us being stuck back in quarantine again. She had like a whole new winter. No good cubs have already won the world Syriza. That improbable event has already occurred. And we can't have the You know the Cubs Sox thing that we were all sort of think it would be perfect for 2020. That can't happen. Wall? Yeah. That would have been great. But it also would have been totally on brand that both Chicago teams to go to the World Series and nobody from here would be able to attend. I know I know. I know, I know that that that that would that would have been been fitting that would have fit right into the narrative. What I'm describing 312981 72 100 your thoughts. If you had to write the next chapter. What would it be? Doesn't have to be serious. It could be anything. What would you do? What would you say? All right. So I want to get to this because this is something we tried last Friday. I believe, and we're going to try to do it again today not saying it's a regular feature just yet. Weigh in. Tell us if you love it or hate it, and you could submit your your complaints or compliments to of the bosses here. Three and threes. Wacker Chicago, Illinois 606. So one See what they have to say. "Smoothie King ruled the day. All three hours devoted to your responses. Ladies and gentlemen to what we saw last night in Cleveland Debate number 1 90 minutes on the stage between our President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Both on the road today as the campaign continues by non Amtrak chug a lugging through Ah, Ohio and Pennsylvania and the president up in Minnesota. For the rest of us that went on in a battleground state. We're not in that perfect position of being a lychee Jetshead Julie at a white suburban woman. It's almost like we don't count and a house in the grind, don't they? Don't they really mean housewife? Suburban housewives? No, No, no, I don't think so. You know, I would be considered a housewife notice ate only away term like they did during the Clinton years. The soccer moms, you know, suburban stock. I'm definitely not that right Housewife even have spent a lot of time at the house and I am a wife. But you adopted to the suburban more. I take a nice breath of fresh air when I get off the train. And I would say if you knock off all the noise that took place last night between Trump was mostly injecting himself and bite. And then Chris Wallace and you just boiled it down to the first four topics because let's face it. I think the ratings will indicate that the longer you got into it less and less people 100% every single person. I talked Tio among my friends said that they started to tune out after the 1st 10 minutes and then after the first half hour, they said, We can't take it anymore. Republic with Democrats, Let's see. Let's go through the key four topics and the seas of the topic, said people undecided, at least that I've talked to who really want to know more. Aunt can't seem to get enough yet to make a decision. Ah, most concerned about number one without a doubt. Corona virus, yes, And with that, because it became an issue in the last few weeks because of Donald Trump and then Joe Biden's response. Biden's defense of Obama care with a few little tweaks. And the president hellbent on saying, We've got to get rid of Obama care. I got a much better plan myself. So I would say in the part that a shore about Corona virus and Obama care because it's almost like they were side by side. People are concerned. You know how I'm gonna pay for this God that I get sick. Somebody knows somebody who's related to me. I would say that Joe Biden scored a lot of points with Corona virus. Because again, the president was on the defensive. And on Obama care because let's face it. He was part of the group that device did and implemented it. Hey clearly indicated. You know, I am not Bernie, the out the Caca Sanders. You know, one payer, You know Medicare for all, so I thought he scored points there and then when it came to the Supreme Court and economy, I thought those were the strong issues for Trump. If you had knocked off all the know, noisy, interfering the smart Alec remarks and whatever you viewed of Crystal Wallace's role I would set going into the first half hour you got like, Wow, It's like 50 50 here and then you get into all the other. Well, unfortunately, though, we heard I'm not going to say lies. Perhaps it was just untruth being told, and it seemed to come from Donald Trump. I mean, when you talk about Obama care, he said that by it in wanted to abolish private health insurance, that's not true when he talked about bite and with Corona virus, wanting to support another lock down. That is not true. Biden said that if it got to the point where the scientists said yes, we need to do this. He would consider it. But then he actually walked that back and said You were not going to need to do that. So I mean, it's You know it's stuff like that client and then again, Trump claimed that he shut travel down between China and here and Europe. In here. It was not a ban. He said. It was a band. It was a restriction with multiple exemption exemption after exemption complete lock down is what we needed it. We didn't have that so He, You know, he threw out a lot of stuff that I thought was basically just it was just a lot of B s. Now. Biden did as well. Biden said something. What was it? Ah, you know they were talking about the trade deficit with China. Um, you know, saying that it was, It's bigger than ever before. It's not the case. It's just not the case. But I think the role of Chris Wallace in one of those things you mentioned Wass Ah when ah, they were talking specifically about the travel ban, you know, especially China stopping flights coming in from China. And the president said, Well, you said it was xenophobic. You said I was wrong, Joe Biden. Nobody never answered that. It should have been incumbent upon Chris Wallace's Seo agreed. I agree. Okay, respectfully, Mr. Vice President. Ah, You did say that on such and such because obviously he had the research. But for whatever reason, he didn't inject that because that is a really key point for Trump is like you guys who are attacking me for doing that. And now all of a sudden I'm wrong. I thought that would have been very helpful. Maybe that'll come by in a second or third debate, But I thought those were the key for issues and then naturally, the other issues are important to key concerns. But I wouldn't say as much. To the total population as Obama care Corona virus because it impacts everybody. The economy impacts everybody, and let's face it the recent issue of the Supreme Court because he can impact everybody for the next 40 years old and and actually, I thought it was interesting that the issue of race Theis issue of safety in our cities. Was not front and center..

He was not here for the nonsense and the dream. And he was like I am not here for the nonsense. You guys to willy nilly with the stuff that you do. And he said something like that. I don't think he said tomfoolery, but he was not about us messing around. So he is about that fun life in general. I'd say of all the hosts down here like he seems to have fun with stuff, which is why it was weird. But he made sure to let me know. No, no tomfoolery today. Did he actually eat crow to that happen? I mean, probably chewy I feel like all things if you cook them, right taste like chicken. Right. Like if you cook like steak ever, really tastes like chicken. And then he was the MVP of the league. But he he's said that he wouldn't hit twenty home runs which wasn't like a crazy thing to say the time because he was still like skinny wasn't exactly a power hitter.
