"It was the one handed and really I think he had like two fingers and maybe his thumb on it. It was an incredible catch, but you look at this catch and you slow it down, you know, the defender had both hands, ten fingers on that ball. And how did Justin, I still watch that. I'm like, I don't know how he came up with it. I was standing probably ten feet away. And I was jumping up and down because I couldn't believe he caught it. But then I never really saw the replay. I didn't see the replay until I got the game was over. I'm scrolling social media, and I'm watching the highlights. I'm like, oh my gosh. This is it. We're seeing a better catch in a bigger moment. Obviously, you mentioned Stefan Diggs. I mean, the Minneapolis miracle, that was that wasn't like a great spectacular catch. It was a great moment that he was a part of it. That play the timing, the moment on fourth down. Seriously, it'll go down in one of the best catches, at least in bike in history. You know, one of the things that this team didn't make the playoffs a year ago, but it didn't have to be overhaul changes, but maybe just a change in the voice in the leader and Kevin O'Connell comes in as the new head coach. You've had a chance to see him for it. Now half a season. What's been the biggest difference that you've seen, Bill? You know, I think there is a relaxed nature to the way that he approaches the game and I think the guys really respond to that. You know, you hear all these older, more experienced coaches, kind of complain about the new generation of players. They're like, ah, these guys, they just, they have to know the why all the time and you have to over explain things and blah, blah, blah, and you know, I think for some coaches, it kind of exposes them that they can't just yell at a player and say, go do that because that's what I told you to do. You know, that style is, it's hard to bridge that generational gap. And I think with the way Kevin's come in, he's all about the why. He's all about the why as a leader of men. This is why we're going to do things on a day to today basis. This is why we're going to do things on the X's and O's. They don't have a lot of yelling Sessions. I don't think anybody's going in the meetings, feeling like they're just going to get beat down and ridiculed and embarrassed. You know, kind of like when we were coming up on football. That was sort of the deal. You dreaded those post those next day. Because you feel like sometimes you feel like you're two inches high because you're just getting the beat down so much. It's not like that. It's an environment of respect and I truly think that they care about the players and the players feel that it's genuine. I think there's a lot of coaches that try to say one thing and they do another, but I think with Kevin and his staff the way they communicate, the way that they walk the walk. Guys can tell that they're not fraudulent that they're genuine. You can follow him on Twitter at Nacho lieber, also on Instagram at Ben lieber official. And Ben, what's the difference with Kirk Cousins? Obviously the numbers are showing itself, but these were the games that Kirk Cousins would lose. And yet this year, the Vikings are winning winning these games. A lot of it has to do with the quarterback. Why is that? Yeah, a lot of it does have to do with the quarterback. And I think, you know, they've kind of alluded to this a little bit more of a calculated risk-taking with Kirk, they're letting Kirk know that, hey, it's okay to throw interceptions. It's okay to throw in a tight windows and take a shot, take a chance. Be a little bit of a gunslinger. You know, I think, you know, Kirk under Mike Zimmer, it was so much like, hey, we're going to protect the football. We're going to run the balls Dalvin cook. It's all about, you know, time of possession and limiting mistakes. And I think too often, Kirk kind of took the safe route because he was afraid to let his head coach down thus letting his team down. But I think the whole team now knows that Kirk's got the green light to rip it. And you look at a couple of those throws in that game, the one that we just talked about Justin. The other third down play that got us down to the two yard line was another JJ catch in the corner of the front corner of the end zone. That was a ridiculous throw that I just don't know if Kirk the last year a couple of years ago would have made that throat because he would have seen color. He would have saw a double coverage and like, nope, I can't in this situation make that throat. He's been given the green light to be to take some calculated risks. And now that the players know that, they honor it, respect it. And they don't give me trouble on the sideline when he makes mistakes. They brush it off and play the next play. There's a couple more minutes here with Ben lieber and we've talked so much offense offense offense, but they brought in said area Smith. Patrick Peterson had two interceptions. This defense has been the staple for the Minnesota Vikings for so long for so many years, but obviously it's a little bit different this year. What are we not told are we not talking about this defense enough? I think because the defense categorically is not something that's going to blow you away when you look at the statistics. They're not outstanding in any one area, you know, going into the game yesterday. They were I think the worst defense in the red zone basically any team that gets inside the 20, they're scoring touchdowns and an unbelievable rate. They finished the bills finished three of 6 yesterday, but early parts of that game. It was staying true to the trend. So I think that it's kind of a defensive anomaly. They give up plays. They'll give up some chunks here and there. They'll let offenses sustain drives and pick up first downs, but then for whatever reason, there's a magic to the season. They get a key sack. They get a key takeaway. They make the key plays in the critical plays when they need to make it. And you mentioned mentioned pat P, you know, he's been phenomenal. You know, this new shift in defensive philosophy and the way that they cover guys is working right to his skill set. You know, I am jealous of you being because as a player, we've both been players and you know when you win a football game, that flight home, you went on the road, that flight home is always one of the best. You have so much fun. Tell me about these plane rides home with the Minnesota Vikings, man. Two weeks ago was Kurt cousins with no shirt on. He's got the chains on. This time is Patrick Peterson. He taught his shirt off. He's got the chains on. How crazy or how fun has it been? Seeing these guys get on that plane ride home. It just seems like a different culture with the way they've been able to celebrate their success. Well, you know the unfortunate part though here, Kirk, is that, you know, when you're a non player and I'm now in the clinical broadcast team. You know, I got to sit in the back with all the unwashed. All the pretty people in the players, they get there up front and first class business class or whatever it is and you know, you load from the front and the back of the plane. So

"Phrase. You can't be cautiously optimistic. Like somebody saying coldest hell it's an oxymoron and the cowboys to me are an oxymoronic team. Good are you bad. But you can't be both and right now. It appears that they're both. They are both and that's the craziest thing that's always stress performance. Not so much outcome. Obviously you get to a point where outcome has to become the priority or else go far. You find yourself outside the playoffs but this team right now. In terms of performance and terms of dak prescott coming back last year dak prescott. They were losing gangs in the beginning before to injury. Correct but he was on. Nfl historical pace pay this year. It's okay because you guys have split. You guys are wondering what right now but is it okay to dak. Prescott has the fifteenth highest passer rating. When you have top five in. Nfl history is that okay. I don't know is it. Kennedy's sixteenth for tip. When that's not who dak prescott supposed to be in this office would always receive converting your deck. But okay when i see you pass the test tells you only got three neck american. Ooh talk about this defense over here. Could they got double digits. Thirtieth is booth. I lose so many friends. 'cause i tell the truth all the time you probably stick out for me from me. I am rooting for you. To tell the truth. close one. i liked sale sale. What did i tell you. What did i tell. Y'all know said this. No i said this gonna put it on where it belongs day. I said this this go now. Dak prescott is paid. What are you doing wait a second now. Debt you all these sixteenth right now in passer rating wait a second now deck you only fifteen th right now in yours. You weren't doing this last year. So you're doing this two years ago. That prescott was fourth in league turnovers. But we didn't care we turn to buy. That can't be my dak prescott now. My dakota rain can't be him but now that he's out a man has changed america. Tried to warn you that press gets paid things will change in. His perception will change. I just needed to make sure we stopped and brought attention to this. Proceed sir i will precede protect my boo protect. Yeah you'll come up here. Maybe look it's two games. It's a sample size. Obviously he's off individually to a different start slower start. I think they're really trying to figure out the formula. Look the dallas cowboys when they run the ball like they ran the ball against the chargers. They are eleven and oh hunter seventy five plus yards like dan baugh and that's the problem with one. Here's the thing. Run the ball. Tony polish stop playing. I would say well you know what if you put them in zeke's conditions. They stack the box. Get no they don't want people. Let's do some deep now because we need to do a show with the film. Study and the laser out and rewind click. But 'cause people aren't they stacked the boss was eastern policy. Or are you a they. Who's zeke to do with zeke. Dust going there get a cloud of dust and helping pass protection because right now these players are not working out for you. Put paula in the same position. Same play call and then you see explosiveness. All i'm saying is i think the money is dictating. Why the place election is going to wait. It's going it's tough for them to just finally commit to the run game. But i look at it. It's okay that now pay. Tom brady got great tees to play right now. This team is playing a little suspicious. Coming up if andy can play. He's gonna start box. Mark sanchez will help us her. If the bears are making a mistake that's next. Don't speak for yourself. Lipid this this weekend on fox. Dr saturday strong with the new and pre game show eastern soldier field chicago then at noon eastern note to gain kasich pubic noon. Saturday begins at ten eastern fox in the fox sports. Andy dalton. no mandy left. Sunday's game with an injury the avoided. Acl tear also avoided contact. I don't know i got hurt. Just feels replace the vet and interception with just under a hundred total yards in the win. Save money that dawson is healthy. Going to still be joined now by sports. Alice mark sanchez in the house santosh called bingos bears game on sunday so mark. How big of a mistake is net. Maggie making andy. Listen i before we answer the question. All i got to say is i sat down. Nagy and the pre-game okay and in the meeting getting ready for the big game on sunday called the game and he drew the parallel saying. This is what. I'm trying to do here and sanchez. You'll understand your quarterback. I said okay. Hit me coach. Alex smith patrick mahomes. Andy dalton justin fields. That's where he's going. He said i lived. I was in kansas city. I saw how much better of a quarterback that patrick mahomes became Running scout team and learning from alex smith. Now i said i understand coach. I get it makes sense in a vacuum and in kansas city. Chicago's a different animal. Now i mean. These people are calling for fields as soon as it went got her. I mean there was barely a second of ono. Is he okay. It was fields is on the stop. Stop doing traffic. We got our guy. So i understand the intent and i believe that might be in the best interest of andy so he gets the play a little justin so he gets to learn a little and organization. I understand that but in this market. That's a tall task to pull off right now. I mean i don't envy his position. That is really really hard but you could see the contrast in in fields there's flashes but it's not all there yet but he's a rookie to so it's expected andy. Dalton is a well first off. How big of a mistake as maggie making is making a huge mistake. He's making mistake. Here's why andy. Dalton is clearly better than justin fields. Right now we can all agree on now but just in fields going to take leaps and bounds. Justin fields is going to get exponentially better. Andy dalton is going to get incrementally better. Let me bet on exponential growth. That's where i'm at fellas. But and that was prepping for this. And i was like. I'm about to sit by my dog mark sanchez. Remember mark sanchez. top five. Pick remarks roles in thought. Just be able to five to one. Hundred love digress. I di- i apologize. You ipod ninth place. You got laugh. It's not nice gun. Yes i look. I'm a cut to the chase. You did not get rid of mitch. Trubisky for andy dalton period. That's what it comes down to. You did not get rid of mitch. We did bears fan. That's not what we did. Mitch trubisky he was i. We got the full crinkle up full screen up. Just talk talk. Mr bisky was twenty five and thirteen in his last thirty eight games. Andy dalton eleven. Twenty two over the last three years mr bisky. He wants sixty six percent of the games. Don't he won. Thirty three bump out. That mitch went to the playoffs twice. Don't goose egg mitch pro bowl. Don't goose.

"Depending upon if they're scouting and their game prep. Says to let's assume it's uh, laser razor, says Matt. There's an opportunity here if they're in this coverage, and they're in this front. With Justin. We can take advantage of something you might want to think about that. I got no problem with it. Now. If you tell me they're going to alternate plays If you tell me Justin's going to shuttle in every fifth let no I agree with you. That's for Saturday's That's high school stuff. But if there is a particular coverage and a particular front and a particular situation at a particular spot on the field That That plays there. Go for it. I'm okay with it. Absolutely 100%. I don't want to want that. And then for those that love to talk about the risk of injury, there is a risk of injury there. Now. I'm not necessarily someone that's afraid of that, because it's football. There's always going to be pain. There's always gonna be injuries, right cap. They're always so I'm not necessarily afraid of that. I just want him to have full autonomy one or the other. For me. I don't want Justin fields out there for just a certain package because Andy Dalton can't can't get it done. If any, Donald can't get it done, he shouldn't be the quarterback. But what if any, don't is getting it done, But the situation calls for a particular play. You're like, Whoa. That's gonna work. Yeah, That's what David Montgomery's for. David. That's what Damien Williams is for. Is he not? I mean, that's why that's why you have certain set of plays offensively, got offensive players to make offensive place. Let them do it. Let fields learn on the side because that's the game plan, right fields on the sideline, just like Patrick Mahomes. Just sit there and just watch. That's the game plan. So let him have the You know what Don't disrupt the man. He's going to have the visor. He's got a like a little clipboard. He's going to start writing stuff down. Yeah, let him be able to learn because that's the plan right? Because we're the Kansas City Chiefs. Except that we don't have the cancer cheap players. That's who we are same game plan cap. You want something new, right? You like to have a new game plan, But no, no. What now? You does it just dust off what he learned from Kansas City. The whole thing is a microcosm of Kansas City. Let's have these kind of crazy gadget plays and let's have these, you know, let's do this. We're having a veteran over the kid. Let's do what we learn under Andy. Why? What if I love the idea that he's BU when it actually is being Andy? Yeah, every coaches that way, but not to the letter. I mean everything. All these plays are Kanzi plays. So I said, without the can see players over over the weekend, Matt Nagy actually compared Andy Dalton to Alex Smith, and we've done the the You know, This is his version of Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes with the Andy Dalton Justin Fields for the first time, he actually said, Here's a quote he's probably I mean, almost identical to the preparation of how Alex Smith was there very similar, not just in the prep part, but in the personality and how they lead in practice. We'll see how Andy is on game day. I know how Alex was, but they are very similar in that regard. Just very calm, You know, but yet competitive. I'm surprises. No Kansas City barbecue place in Lake Forest. Just for just for men. I mean, the whole thing wrong. Kansas City, right? We Royals fans here. No. I mean everything cap everything right to the letter. But when and I'm not talking about his won loss record when Dave wants that came here. It was all about Dallas when Lovey came here. It was all about what he learned. Tampa Tampa When Tony Dungy went to the cults, it was what he did at Tampa when he went to Tampa was what he did in Pittsburgh, like Every coach has somebody that they're going to run their stuff. Yeah, but you should win with it. One of the cans City playbook win with it by bringing in Chicago. Apparently that playbook doesn't travel very, very far. What if he said to you, Dude, I haven't had a quarterback now I feel like I do. And I would tell him. Yeah, No, it's like he tells the press. Yeah, No, I probably don't think that's true. Okay. Matt Nagy. Time to get the offense, right. This is courtesy of hanging with the big hurt. This city is just they know defense, and what I want to do is I think that's a great question by you because it's time that we get this offense back. It's time, you know, and I love defense. Trust me, but I love offense to and I know our offense has not been good enough. Um, and it's time that it gets better. It's time that we score more points, and if we got to score 40 points to win a game, then let's do it. I'm okay with that, and I accept responsibility for that. I will not shy away from that. And that's why I think Ryan and I working together to try to get the best players in here that that can do what we want to do. But we're ready to four more points. You're you're 100%, right? There you go. Sounds good. Get out of the twenties and all these offensive categories and I'll be convinced. Let's go 3123323776 give us a player not named Justin fields that will have to make an impact. Sunday night and this season for the Bears to have success. 3123323776..

"The season if they could have chosen for one of these guys to be good pretty clearly. What's for drew. Lock to be good given what he's signed for longer he's younger. He has more upside. But i also think that to be honest with you even though they pick teddy i. I sort of think that there's a decent chance. E them both during the twenty twenty one season they. I would be surprised if they both started up. These five games. Like how dare you be grid could fit together to. You're saying he's gonna get banned book. Yeah i didn't say they were smart. Said they're going to do it. So i i think stuff like that where like i think they might go back and forth and i think in the long run. You're hoping that you're winning games without having to have your quarterback be great but if ted he's great all the better i let's go to a similarly unlikely possibility ten percent chance in san francisco that jimmy garoppolo starts sixteen or more games this upcoming season that the chiefs other diners actually do the alex smith patrick mahomes philosophy and jimmy garoppolo was healthy enough to pull it off see. I think that's ten percent thing but my heart was telling me no chance that happens and i think everyone is rooting for trade links to play at some point right like because it's more fun. Not necessarily he's going to be a better quarterback. But i wanna see you. A college handles do with that type of talent we already saw peak in the in. The preseason I don't think he's gonna be able to resist the temptation. If trae lance kids anywhere close up to speed able to start at an nfl game. I'm not sure he's at that point right now but i think it's possible by november december. He will be I yeah i did leave one game. I said sixteen. Plus jimmy. garoppolo doesn't have to start. One game could start one game. This season follow the mahomes path. But i don't want this to happen. I wanna see trae lance but we'll see We have a couple more. Can you give me an afc one here. Yeah we get twenty. I don't wanna say twenty. Seventy we get somewhere between twenty seventeen twenty incarcerates. I notice a big difference between those two versions of carson wentz. Now i talk twenty eighteen. he was. He was like a fringe top. Ten quarterbacks statistically at least right but twenty seventeen was the mvp or close. I would you know i'm okay. I'm just going to say twenty okay. Only ten percent chance that fly. I wanted to go in the middle. Okay let's say he puts together a top aide to ten season okay. I think that's fair do you. I mean he's coming off of a fractured foot. A season where he was totally broken and he is publicly making it clear. He has no intention to get vaccinated fight. The might be lower than five percent outage. Put it that way. But what would it be if he hadn't broken his foot and was vaccinated Pads twenty five percent okay. Don't think it's like twenty nineteen was kinda good right like there is still the the dak wets to be going on. I had to write a whole piece on. Bless your heart. Who's who's starting at left tackle for the colts in week one. I don't even know. Is it going to be eric fisher. I hope he's on the gophers lewis. And i don't think he's ready. I think that's the one thing you think about the colts. Oestron offense applying. But i don't know falcons going to be strong this year. I don't think that's a given. And i don't often line was as good as To be last year I mean they had a wizard in terms of getting people. In the right places exactly and they. They don't have that anymore. No they do not make it. Call phillip. I guess they probably still have number by question. Is said that you think the jags might win that division. Assuming what what. The colts compete for it and win it. I don't know twenty percent chance of admission. Five percent chance of winning the division. Probably see i think i would put that right in line with the jaguars which is five percent. Trae are making not. Because i think the texans are not gonna win and i know you shouldn't say that about any. Nfl nfl reading napkin protected by like one percent. Chance sure i. I really think it's like forty titans and then thirty. Thirty jack's colts. I don't think there's much separating the titans from two other teams. I know people are excited about tight jonesing by just really good. That gives them take a step back with everything that's happened. Like the numbers. Look good in a lost. Their offense coordinator lost two years ago. Took a setback. Might take us another setback. This year is moss. Will i need to call. It might have a chance of winning. If carson wentz is attended at like even if he's like a slightly below average it's always not the worst yes. I agree If i go. Nfc here another okay. Let's do another unlikely division winner. Six point five percent per espn's football power index of all little higher than fbi. In this one the falcons win the nfc.

"It is a leak out there when it comes to receivers for the saints. Yeah it's not great. It's not a great situation I do have some faith in sean. Payton food they i- faith in that offensive line. And i wanna have faith james. I think it would be a tremendous story. If he's able to be a good quarterback. I mean even if he's like the fifteen best quarterback the top fifteen ten to fifteen range. I still think that's a great story. You know if he gets to revive his career debt himself a long term contract. Whether that's new orleans or somewhere else it would probably be new orleans rate if it works But i think that would be a great story. So i you. I'm pulling for him. To rebound i mean you know it is a like like this is the chance. I mean if if it's not this year famous it's not gonna be any time in the future and stranger things have happened. Can call you back to the argument. I don't think you can rule anything out when it comes to quarterbacks but I i would figure amazon starter for the whole year if he stays healthy Baby tastes hell comes in for a game. If james struggles i four interceptions in the first three quarters of a game or something i think case him has a role but unlike the bronco situation it kind of feels like this one is going to stick a situation on the other hand where things are. They worry less clear until maybe an injury seems to have sealed. The situation is san francisco. Where trae lance of course was drafted third overall. Pick the niners trade i to move up and get him of course. Trade lands is the quarterback of the future for these francisco. Forty niners but jimmy garoppolo was still on the roster unguaranteed twenty five million dollars. Do jimmy garoppolo that guarantees if he's on the roster for week one of the nfl season. I was always volition. That jimmy garoppolo is not going to be on the one roster whether he was gonna traded before the draft whether he was traded after the draft whether he was going to get cut. I just didn't see the logic in keeping a guy who has his injury history on the roster in week one guaranteeing a salary when you know. You strongly suspect that we don't know but strong expect at some point during the season they're going to turn to trae lance and now it's like what they fractured. Finger trae lions jimmy. Garoppolo's kind of locked onto the roster. So what i want to start with. Lindsay is do you think jimmy garoppolo is always going to be teams week. One starter or do you think trae lance had a chance where he could have won the job in camp and the niners jimmy garoppolo yet. Cal shanahan seemed really committed to this thing to the jimmy was going to be there guy And you know. I think we're going to talk about the bears here coming up because of matt nagy and his history. If anything does this situation in san francisco it probably is the closest thing to the chiefs. Alex smith patrick mahomes model. But the chiefs did not dabble with patrick mahomes. They weren't like let's bring him in for little spurts here and there. Let's design packages. They just said we're not playing this guy. He's gonna be our backup quarterback Because that's what that's kind of where the pressure comes. Otherwise that if you go back and you talk to people who are around the chiefs set in two thousand seventeen. These stories have been written a lot. Everybody in that building new. What patrick mahomes is doing. They knew what he was doing to the scout we on the scout team and what he was doing to their starting defense. They knew what he had done. In training camp So it was kind of just building. The scenario of what exactly was happening in san francisco. It's this kind of a different dynamic where we're seeing what he's doing. They're experimenting with bringing trae lanson for these these packages whether they're running packages or you know potentially some passing packages where they're splitting reps back and forth all that's doing is making this an extremely challenging for kyle shanahan. Because i don't think this is even as much of a football thing now. This is really going to be kind of a team. Management and stress management crisis management thing. Almost now for for kyle shanahan to deal with and you know i think he he really enjoys the media misinformation. He loved it. I think the predrag cycle. I think he's you know it's been kind of funny for him to the you know the last couple of weeks ago who's going to be your starter that stuff but at some point if garoppolo is not playing well it's gonna become a thing. It's going to be something that he's going to deal with within his own locker room and it's going to become a thing within the fan base and i've been around places where it has become a thing where you're hearing about it in the stadiums your hearing about it. You know you take your kids to school and his kids teachers and the dad's of his kids soccer team you know. They're going to be asking him constantly. And i think they already are asking him. It's going to become a thing that's probably end up weighing on him. So i'm really curious to see how you know. Kyle shanahan manages that whole side of this because look we all know. The trae lances their long-term starting quarterback. We all know that right. We know the jimmy garoppolo is not going to be here next year you know. His contract is extremely tradeable after this season. So how do you go about managing that when you have a team that should be able to compete for a division title this year. It's going to be really really difficult. Taking guys will get back to.

"I'm at right now. And everything and just the offense is a whole cows mexico so just to recap do not play poker with that guy Wiles jimmy his. Your guy would cost. Shanahan regret choosing jimmy over trae lance. Regret what. I'm gonna go the other way. Yes i'm gonna do upgrades friend of the show on the show brennan. I'm to go. I'm gonna say yes if kyle shanahan and i don't even know if this is allowed by the nfl. Bylaws is playing fantasy football in a group of his college buddies. High highschool buddies. And he's like you know what second round i'm gonna take jimmy g. I think he would regret that if we're playing fantasy football. I think it'd be a bad pig but you know what we're not. We're playing real football. We're winning games actually matters and you know what if you've got a hand the ball off most of the time in wins a game. Will that matters. Okay i know all the analytics are all. Oh he's no good. I know he went to the super bowl. But that doesn't count. It doesn't really wasn't really in the super bowl. It's a figment of our magic. It's an nfc that went to the super bowl. I think it's there. But i'm not sure to the super bowl. Okay super well. They both lost further record. Kyle shanahan is seven and twenty seven when jimmy g. is not his starter. Okay not awesome. Not awesome is twenty. Two and eight when jimmy g. starts so yes trae lance is the future i get it. You spend a lot of draft kaplon. But jimmy g. wins football games and if you look at the forty nine or schedule if he can get through that rough patch. Early on jimmy. G. is going to be the quarterback of this team for a long time but at least through the season if he starts losing games. Sure that's not his thing. But i don't think he will. I think it'll be the quarterback throughout the season. I think it will be a more akin to alex. Smith patrick mahomes. After the ended the season jimmy g. can go somewhere wonderful and win some games and trae lance will take over so no. I don't think he will regret. It is the shorter answer. I agree with you while he was deaf and not regret the decision. Like you pointed out. He's twenty two and eight as the starter. The only knock on jimmy g. really is can stay healthy and he's not gonna while you're not gonna throw for three hundred and fifty yards a game because he came from learning from. Tom brady if go hand the ball off and throw ding dong route. That's what he's gonna do. I'll he's going to do is win games. His dad is not going to be pretty. And it's not gonna be sexy but while he's out there going over the check downs and throw into the tight in kills on shore out routes you can best believe shanahan will be telling like listen. I know he threw it to the in here. But i want you to throw the ball. This is what i brought you in for. So jimmy. j. is gonna get his routes. He's gonna play all year. He's gonna win if he stays healthy but it. Trains is going to begin. Tutored by shanahan on a silent on what he wants trae lance to do once he steps on a fair kinda reminds me when alex went to the nfc championship. And yes. he's a winner but harbaugh deal likely. What cabinet was going to bring to the team when it comes to being more explosive as office so yes. Jimmy is going to be the thought. He's not regretted. They can't wait to make that switch to be more explosive offense. Yeah so i think this will surprise wild because wilde's is forever in love with jamie and i am not quite so much but i don't think you'll regret this either. What i think needs to happen for this to be successful is four. Kyle shanahan to be more flexible than the great and super bowl champion andy. Reid was in that season. That wild is alluding to because in that season. That was a very good chief. Seem that had been to the playoffs. Years prior mahomes isn't ready and then the out of practice. It kept week by week. Most people didn't see this. Obviously because nobody cared about the chiefs back before mahomes started playing and people aren't reading the candy star. But i am from there every week was like wow. This kid is getting better. And better and alex smith was alex smith and the chiefs started off well and then went into a slump and then they go into the playoffs. And there's no real super bowl threat at all because you knew. They were limited the quarterback position and they end up losing marcus mariota in kansas city in round one i that say this. I think most people feel like jimmy. Geel start all year unless he gets hurt and we'll give it to trae lands. I don't think you should need some massive losing streak in order to potentially turn the reins over. I just think you need to see enough from trae in practice to know the moment not going to be too big for him that even if the niners are seven and four if trae lance is all like okay. He's got the playbook now keep in mind didn't really play last year because the covert stuff in front of the small schools so i do think that the jump is going to be massive. I just think shanahan. If what i know is the niners. Can't win the super bowl jimmy garoppolo. I know wilde's like they almost eight yet. They almost did and they didn't. And may by the way the niners that year could have won the super bowl. Jimmy garoppolo teams aren't as good. They're not they don't have quite the same weapons on either side of the balls they had the the year they went to the super bowl and their defense is not as dominant and robert sollers gone and to force buckner is gone. It's not the same team. So you need more out of your quarterback. So i just think he needs the flexibility of even if we're playing well once i know why no and if that makes jimmy g. upset so be it. He'll still have you writing to soften the blow but so brandon. I think it's weird if we can throw up the schedule again. If he wins those games against some great quarterbacks and then have the by that would be the natural time to bring trae lance in but if he beats the packers any beats the seahawks and he beats collar murray. I don't know how you like. All right let's bring trae. Lance in tradesmen playing great to to play great defense against the colts play khalil mack. Or you wanna play the rams i. I don't know when you bring him in. And we know brian floor as did this. Fitzpatrick was winning but he felt like a one year. Rental intuit was the future floor is still made the move or like Kind of a head scratcher. Fitzpatrick was winning. He was a pro about it. But then as the as the year went on all of a sudden the old switcheroo to was back on the bench fitzpatrick's in in the fourth quarter. Now look to. It doesn't seem worse for wear to patrick feeling well in washington but it wasn't odd situation so the question i have for you. Is this if jimmy. G. is winning. Do you think it's too weird to take out a winning quarterback in bringing a rookie would definitely be weird. Because this isn't like you mentioned a ryan. Fitzpatrick wasting every team ryan. Fitzpatrick bentiu for the last. Five years knew he was pretty much going to be a rental. Jimmy was brought into the franchise guy. So if he's winning. Shanahan knows this isn't a sprint. it's a marathon. I think he will want to have. Jimmy have a very successful season where his trade value will go up even more into say. Hey next year. That's when we will ride trade. Lance would get so much capital for jimmy because he finished the season. You see him when he took us in a playoff now we can go with our young guy trae lands and we can also get a draft pick awesome collateral. Some players for jimmy g. once he had a great season issue. That's that's fair point. And that is what the chiefs did and they ended up getting a good return for alex. Smith i still i and maybe this is just the bitterness bitterness. The wrong word but the longing is a chief's fan. I feel like mahomes rookie. Or they could have gone to the super bowl if they would have made that quarterback switch now trae lanes. Isn't patrick mahomes. But i still feel like that was a missed opportunity and also jin. I know you were speaking euphemistically but you said poker so.

"Hour of the show and not the end quite yet. But we're glad you're here. It's been a very busy afternoon with all the alliance move. We've also continued our series back to school talking to reporters from various college newspapers in the southeastern conference We've had a lot of fun doing that. And ashley wood's joins us. She is a sports editor of the crimson and white in tuscaloosa. My that is a coveted position. I can imagine actually thanks so much For for joining us. Congratulations on your your essential to that row. And and how are you like to be back on campus. I'm doing great. Thank you for having me today. Paul it great to be back on. Campus i was online for the past year. And a half and it just great to be back in school so i'm just trying to imagine getting back to campus and i know there's there's so much to do but i mean it was it was it just the normalcy of it seeing friends just returning to college life. What what what was the most important thing i guess. Just returning to normalcy of It was very weird being at home. intel schools do schools and alba being at home for a brief period time taking classes and just being disconnected from kansas. And also just all the stuff that was going on during twenty twenty at the time. It's just very very good to be back on campus. I think all of us would dream as young journalists to be The campus sports editor but to be the credit camp sports editor in tuscaloosa. At this moment in time. What is that like such a great opportunity. You know before i decided to make my journey into journalism political science major about always had a soft spot for sports particularly football and growing up. My dad is a hardcore alabama. San so alabama was always on the house on saturdays whenever we can watch it It's just very great to be a part of such a such a program here at the university of alabama being able to cover football basketball. I'm just so privileged to be here. Not that i know anything but I strongly encourage that political science background. It will help you as taken from someone who went down that road. Let's talk about this year this this football season. Because you know. Alabama is always the epicenter of conversation but what What are your observations already. As we are now just a week and a half away from the first game in atlanta. Yes um of course alabama diversity in the after the epicenter of the conversation a week out. I mean it's just a very great album looks to be a good physician to repeat this year. I mean even though they lost some key players. Like dylan moses devante smith patrick's or tan the third to the second to the nfl. I believe players like Don mechi third Will anderson. junior can really step up and lead this tie this crimson tide team to another national championship appearance and possibly another national title ashley. It's it's i'm i'm stumbling for words to ask your dislike to be on that campus in and maybe it maybe it's normal to us. It's all you've experienced but to be on that campus. In the era of nick sabin especially at this point in time. It's it's a great experience. you know. I am actually not from the tuscaloosa area. I am from delaware But my dad has always been a alabama fans kinda why i've always watched it from afar and just being on campus coming from such a small state like that word coming to tuscaloosa alabama and just seeing how big is in person. I don't i think. Tv doesn't do any justice being here in person on game days whether it was last year you know the smaller type of field or in regular pussy at times where it's like hundreds of thousands of people tailgating hundreds of people hundreds of thousands of people going into the games. It's just a truly at all expiring experience to be here especially her really hardcore football fan. I think you answer the question. In part the my curiosity has got the better. So you're in delaware. Your dad you said is an alabama fan was was he the connection or was there some other reason other than Some of the most obvious reasons that you went to alabama that was part of the connection. I do have family. That grew up in school then moved to delaware before i was born But definitely that connection with Him being such an alabama fan and always just kinda observing from afar and watching it. I i grew up. I wasn't too in to college football. And as i older i got more into it because it was just something that me and my dad could bond over. Yeah i don't know a lot about delaware Spending the news a lot in the last year but I wouldn't think that's a real hotbed of college. Football up there no. Nfl definitely takes precedence over college. Football although you d- does the university where does bring in some things. Come watch football games ashley. Judd in terms of alabama. This year. and you help us with this. Because it seems like the alabama fans that we hear from which aren't necessarily the students that you encounter every single day or just they just don't think this program is ever going to lose a game. I know that's not realistic. But is it like that among the students as well that we can be like that around the students. I mean like it's very much embedded in the culture. Alabama is the team could be in quite frankly. It's very hard to be alabama so definitely it can run into the spirits of students here. I do remember in two thousand nineteen versus lsu. I don't think a lot of people really expected us to lose to lsu especially a lot of students so the morale within the students was very dejected..

"Fields seems like the quarterback that will steal the yards and one thing that I've seen over the past couple of years that a defense loves when a quarterback is able to steal yard. It keeps your defense on the sideline and keeps them fresh. And I think that Chicago bears you heard Steve talking about nagging experiment with your whiskey? Yes, I see some of the seer malaria as far as athletic ability abilities. Been able to steal those yards out there, so I don't like him going without nothing. Fields is the answer. Okay. How do you respond to that? I I believe that when you take a look at Steve Young and Hearing from Randy Moss. They look at Justin Fields with someone that can play the position also garner yards with the legs. That's something that any dolphin can't do, Uh, and we can see the difference between the two quarterbacks. Dalton is in the pocket. He has a good strong arm. He's put up numbers with Cincinnati. We've seen this, but they feel like the raw. Natural ability of Justin Fields can provide a different dynamic that the Berries have not had the position so I get it. I understand what they're saying. They're saying, and by the way, it's like anything else right? The NFL, the shiny new objects going to get all the attention that old bike over there. That's get got cobwebs like, you know, it's a good bike, but I got a better bike over here. Got something better than Justin Fields. It's It's new. It's fresh, correct, right? That's the difference. I get it. It's around us all around the league by the way. Get someone new in the position. You're like, Yeah, Let's see what that guy can do. Okay, so I went back and Pulled up some news clips about when they drafted Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, and a lot of the narrative was. I don't know if this guy is going to talk about where analysts wrote. I don't know if this guy is going to make it. He's out of that goofy offense at Texas Tech, and does it translate? It never has, and I don't know, but he's got a big arm. That's what I That's what I thought. We all know now that he's going to go down as a legendary player in the sport. That's what I thought. When I saw him in college, he see those crazy big 12 games 50 to 49, just like no defense play. Defense is optional. CORRECT that saw him running around out there in a circle. I'm like, the only thing that was his positive. He's like a Second generation athlete, right? His dad, Pat Mahomes, pitch for the Cubs, the mats, a whole bunch of teams, so he was Familiar with the pro lifestyle because he grew up in it. And By all accounts, a great person very easy to coach. And so I went back and also looked at the records of the Chiefs. Okay, The Bears were eight. Nate last year. Yes. Andy Dalton was not on our team. Andy Dalton was not very good in Dallas Now. I don't know if anyone would have been good in Dallas. It was a bad team. Last year, they were banged up all of it. You know what the records were with Alex Smith at quarterback for the Chiefs. Okay, he had started. Four consecutive seasons for that team. Andy Dalton is a brand new guy. He went 11 and 5 12 and 4 10 and six went to the Pro Bowl. Some people were saying he could be an all pro. Well, he you're not going to bench him for a rookie. You're not And then once the rookie got his feet back, then they moved him to Washington. Alex Smith was putting up big time numbers. We don't have that here now. We do not Totally different, so I don't understand how you can comp Justin Fields. Andy Dalton, Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes. I don't get it. I can just try and I try to boil it down is and how to simplify it from my head. I just compare the bear situation to the Jets and the Jaguars and that they don't believe that they can win and they're okay with their growing pains. Even with Borough coming back, That's him going. You're going through the growing pains again. He's coming off an injury. The Bengals aren't going to be very good this year, right? But what about the Bears? Risk reward when it comes to Justin Fields. We believe in him because why do we believe in Justin Field? I believe in him because I saw him in college. You believe in him being here? Okay, so and I believe in him because of what I saw as far as leadership. All those things, but he wasn't coached by Matt Nagy in college. Ryan Day, Correct. So that's why Kirby smart, good coaching, But I guess my whole point cap is that what those other young quarterbacks they're not expected to do. Much of anything is an evaluation year for the Jets and for the Jaguars. Right. Okay. And then Matt Jones mayor may not start for New England. It might be cams. And then maybe Jones will start at some point, but with Justin Fields Are you going to get to where you want to get too, which is the next step? With him. If youse has full autonomy as a quarterback, can you get to like to win a playoff series play? I'm sorry Playoff game would Justin Fields at quarterback? Can you get to the next level? Or are you going to stand still and just get to the playoffs and lose again? What if I told you he played like Justin Herbert did That's great. Now. That team did not go to the playoffs. Yeah, that team got their coach fired. But you look and go. Oh, that kids are beast. Your patient enough to wait right As bears fans. We are very impatient. Do I think this team can win the Super Bowl this year? Despite what Jim Miller told K. Jay Z. The answer is no. They can't he said. They could win with Andy Dalton gets the Super Bowl and win it with an correct and that's ridiculous. Yeah, so I would rather put my future in the hands of Justin Fields and go. I'd like you to learn on the job. And if I happen to go seven and 10 You're good with it, right? You're good with that. Yes. Okay. I'm good with it. I'm good with it because I want to accelerate his development. You get these guys on a rookie deal for five years? Yeah, And then if they're good I just saw it. The guy in buffalo Josh Allen got $258 million. Well, when you pay someone that kind of money Guess what Somebody else is gonna be sacrificed off your roster. So you want to try and win as quickly as you can. I just want the head coach would be flexible enough to understand that he has got a stick shift and not an automatic. This has a different level of car then when he's had to coach with with the Bears, agreed. It's important, though, came like I know what he can do on the college level. Have college eyes when I watch him, But in the NFL, I think that his skill set is similar to a lot of good quarterbacks in the league. Very an excellent quarterbacks in league Now I need to know that can Nagy acquiesce and allow him to have his natural ability, coach him but also let him have his natural ability. Runner run out of the pocket. Be able to survey the scene run with the football, whatever it takes if he said to you chip map. Jonathan. I was listening this morning. Having my coffee getting ready for practice and I've got to tell you guys The best thing for Justin is not to start the season because he's not ready. Not to go through the growing pains and whatever the record is, it is I have a responsibility to 52 other guys in there, and the best thing for our team right now is for Andy to play. We play good defense. We run the football. He doesn't turn it over much. We have a chance to have a solid season. Justin will get his time. If he said that to you, How would you feel about it? I'm totally fine with that. Cause I know Eventually Justin's going to start. I don't think that the season will be squandered because Justin doesn't start right away..

"They're more pro. Ready up. They might be more pro ready. But i think it's just the wheel that teams want to win now and they understand the presser. Foam property management the understand the pressure from fans and other things about justice field. I think the nfl suggested feels andy dalton as well because that brings a huge market by their schedule. Right now No slouch out of the gate. He would be facing the rams. Obviously matthew stafford would be there at the helm for the ramp. I would say this. I think the answer as to why quarterback start sooner now number. One is the realization that while they're on their rookie deal. It frees your underpaying a potential so much you have more resources gets so everyone deal window as the time to do it and even the first year if they're not great. The most persuasive argument. I think is getting the experience now. I would remind people. Patrick mahomes who is already the best i've ever seen do it like apologies to everyone in terms of the very best i've ever seen. I think it's patrick. Mahomes hole right now. You just you got crazy crazy. You're not going to dismiss aaron rodgers. I'm not dismissing anyone. Rogers one beef from you. Kinda are not not in the ciba's you're not gonna do today mall. You're not going to do all time. Who's the best running back you ever seen. I'll go wall to so you're dismissing everyone else. You know you're not dismissing everyone else. Both you stop that nice try. The point is mahomes incredibly great. By the way you want to bring up. How can you want to bring up that. Roger hold up. I'm not gonna get sidetracked. We can get into that in another debate. And i will prove my point. You wanna say. Aaron rodgers fine either. One of them started as rookies. The reason i bring up is because he's doing it now and he's sat except for maybe one start the whole year behind alex smith and he was protected and he learned point molly. He sat behind. Alex smith a guy who could play the game of football air. Rogers sit behind far a guy who could play the game of football. I'm not sitting. Justin feels behind the rear rifle. Anti donahue no probably can't play anymore book is not your best point of the day. Yeah that is no question. The difference here it's garoppolo and trae lynn. Different malibu more like alex smith and mahomes. It's more like do you think that's a fair comparison garoppolo to alex smith. No take your quick to take. Alex smith over garoppolo alex smith who but actually garoppolos. Winning percentage is absurd durable. We're getting sidetracked again. We're not actually giving point reason. You want okay fine. I will stop down and beat you both in this argument so alex smith is more was more durable throughout his career in spite us and catastrophic. And then jimmy garoppolo. Who's much earlier in his career if you want to argue who had more success when they were on the field at an earlier point in the career the answer is clearly garoppolo. How many super bowls has alex. Smith gone to as pointed out garoppolo. Did it for a team. That couldn't buy a win when he wasn't playing right. So but i'm not trying to get bogged down that i'm simply saying garoppolos. A proven winner in the nfl. Right now like at a different level than andy dalton so garoppolo trae. Lance is more like alex smith. Patrick mahomes i agree with that. That's why my reasoning for justin fields is a little different here. My reasoning for fields. If they had a good offensive line. I go with. They have an awful offensive line. I don't want to see the kids head taken off. It's already happened once in preseason when things are simplified they can't protect the basser. that's the problem with chicago. That's why i said. The last time i was on his show is key for the chicago. Bears amax to get their protection. Squared away that was just a simple miss protection but often salon. But we look at other plays with just feels. He has alluded that pressure. He has picked up things with his legs. I down giving his team a sport. Listen i'm gonna tell you this you don't wanna lose the locker room. You don't wanna lose your fan base. You don't wanna lose everybody else. I think the locker game number one. You don't want to lose your job. I think the locker room is the strongest point. That's the real danger. Is you can lose a team. If it's clear to everybody in the room that dude should be starting. Are you hearing. That's what the team wants. I mean we know what the fan i'm not. I'm not hearing that right now. But i can just know him is telling me molly my heaven since since i've been born to spectacular. There's no way anyone in that locker rooms not thinking. It's a totally imperfect game that you're trying to do as perfectly as possible everyday. Come out i'm trying to do it. I'm hoping this year is my best year. That's the prediction. And i'm not for that. I'm into doing the work. Is the process going to be right. I'm gonna work my expletive off to get it right our quarterback dinner last week joining us now at forty four years old. Is it possible. This could be his best season. Ever dan absolutely and because the pieces that remain intact with them having so much success last year are there and then some. They did all that last year. And tom brady threw for fifty touchdowns and that was without a guy like oj. Howard who got hurt and tours aco's experts round pick the super talented gotta figure out a way to use them. That was out with without a being gave part of their football team for the whole off season in the in the season. How did they end kind of intricate Integrate a little bit more that he's a full part of their offense now. Geo bernard a pass catching tailback. And i think tom brady. Is this guy that i've often said this. Quote motivation is tweeting. Give me habits. He's just so obsessed with his habits. I can see. Tom brady having another big season a better season than he did last year because their offensive. Line's intact now. Just gets to go. It is possible. It's possible that it's possible. He could have his best season from a certain point of view. I would remind people like you michael jordan. The of all goats right there are some people could argue that actually. He was a more well rounded complete player. When they won seventy two games and the championship with pippen. "Brewster. I am shocked at youtube. Football men absolutely shocked. I mean no. This is not the right play if jimmy g. should be started our jimmy g. should play until he either gets hurt. And we know there's a good chance to get hurt or if he doesn't play well but no quarterback worth is soul. Wants to have another guy coming into play on third down or another guy. Coming here for gimmick. Plays here or there or another quarterback coming in every second or third series. No that you don't drew brees did it. Yes but he was forty years old by that point. He needed a break. He was fine with it at that. Point jimmy garoppolo is twenty nine. Jimmy garoppolo still thinks he's got his whole future and career ahead of him. Jimmy garoppolo is saying the last time i was healthy. I eight minutes away from winning the super bowl. No this is not the right move. Look this could be. And i do think is a good chance jimmy. Kaji gets hurt and that's when trae lands is thrown in but you don't need to throw him in right away. I wouldn't mind it if this is an alex. Smith patrick mahomes situation. It wouldn't hurt trae lands who only played one game like the last year and a half and that was at the f. c. s. level in the missouri valley conference. It wouldn't hurt him to sit for one year and learn at the feet of jimmy. Garoppolo learn with a top team in the nfc. In my opinion that wouldn't hurt him at all but again he might get thrown because jimmy g. gets hurt but i don't think this is good. I think you need one quarterback especially when you have a winner like jimmy g. who's twenty two and eight as the forty niners starter and no same forty niners same coaching staff. Same running game all of that. Same defense they're seven twenty-seven without jimmy g. over the last four years so he's not air rogers but something about this dude gets wins in san francisco. I think it should be him until he gets hurt or just stopped playing well this season but jimmy. G's always hurt. He's missed thirty nine games in the last seasons. So you can't rely on jimmy d so jimmy d worth assault shore when he's available but he's never available so therefore he's not worth. I liked him alive but he's not a reliable player. Which is why chalons is in the building to begin with so because of what you mentioned the fact that trillions is very raw as only played one game in basically year and a half you do need to get him out there little bit get him in gametime situations. And how can you do that without completely. Derailing the locker room to lavar point without taking without creating a quarterback controversy because the fan base obviously wants to see trae lance. You put him in situations where he can do what he does. Because you media trae. Lance are such different players have different styles. Putting him in in these situations is a perfect way to get him reps because he needs it because he is so raw see what he has what he what he is really going to be available to you moving four because he is the future and make sure he has some feet on the ground because jimmy g. is always engine. They have have to put him out there. They don't want to put out there completely. Raw not having played in a game in the last year and a half and then he has to go in and start because jimmy g. is hurt so i actually think this is the way to solve all of your problems. You get him some reps in a way. That doesn't completely derailed the locker room and made jimmy feel like this is not his team. Even though jimmy is fully aware that he's not the future anymore. They gave up a lot sooner up and get trae lands. Jimmy is aware this is his last year with the forty niners. It might not even be his last full season with the forty niners because if he plays well and someone gets injured then they feel like trailer is capable. They may trade him mid season. So there's a lot of moving parts. That shannon has trying to balance here but putting him in situational place where he can play type of ball that he plays which is very different. Than what jimmy d does is the perfect situation for the niners. I think it's a great move that he did it. I also think it's good that he said he's going to do it so that it doesn't become a shock to everyone when they put him out there and then it becomes a conversation of turning the team over. no he needs reps. He's very raw. He's obviously the future. Gbd's aware of his situation standing with the team because of what they gave up to get him. This is a perfect scenario for everyone to your point joy. No quarterback worth assault is is in a situation where the team trade three first round draft picks to go get another quarterback. Let tells me everything. They know everything you need to know about how they feel about jimmy. Jean i'm glad you brought up alex smith because alex smith was there with colin kaepernick and colin kaepernick got meaningful reps early on and was was such a different type of player that it caused fits for for defense. And you got to understand. There's only so much time in a week to prepare for a team and when you've got to commit the energy as a staff to stopping a totally different style player and then you've got to commit meeting time and you've got to commit reps. It helps it helps you so much because you can't commit to jimmy g. and so it does have a real strategic value there and then he brought up the drew brees point. Do you think drew brees was excited about coming out. Even though he was at the age that he was at. You think drew brees. Oh i need a rest. No drew brees appreciated the value of a team having to prepare for a totally different style. And look if he goes in and he plays. Well they're going to be screaming for trae lance. This is he. He may may start much sooner than we expect. Because the second it goes bad with jimmy g. That young guys getting in. And they're moving forward broussard's started the worth of salt conversation. Both coat enjoy used it again. So i'm going to read purpose salt. An f. t. on the end salt tea is what jimmy g. asia and san francisco. And that's because you know what when when jimmy g. took them to the super bowl he's a defense of staying away from being a super bowl chance and vastly different narrative surrounding him as it has turned out and unfolded for him and his career. While in san francisco. While you'll say it was jimmy garoppolo. That missed the past. That would allow it to them. Winning the super bowl. I saved was the ten point lead that he helped put up on the kansas city chiefs defense. That was supposed to be the cream of the crop. The bell cows of your team gave up a two possession. Game lied about that but now we sit here and we try to figure out. How do we work with lands. What are we gonna do. it lands. We know lances the future. Everybody knows that trae. Lance is the future of this teams. But i'm not if i'm jimmy garoppolo because it's still held true that when garoppolo went dow- this team won six games last year. Six games and you know why because jimmy garoppolo was not in their quarterbacking. Sometimes i understand you look at the fact that he gets injured and he stays injured quite a bit. I get that. But he's been he's been healthy enough to amass some really really good numbers. Winning wise and san francisco. Do not lose sight of the fact that it's not a given that trae lance just waltzes into the starting position and this forty niners team just all of a sudden continues to win at a rapid pace the same way they did with jimmy. I tap it salty from jimmy johns because people are not respecting what this man has done to help that that organization get back to winning. And that's coming off the hills of them having.

"It was very audible. That wasn't towards bad. Being ben albright have beef. I didn't he got had me blocked back. Then we're good okay so my i should've kept it to myself because you got your explain the situation but i mean let's relax. Let's pump the brakes a little bit on most. Okay okay okay. So digs is offended about. Patrick mahomes two point now by the way. I don't think i love that much either. Because you're talking about ridiculous expectations. Now for a guy who i was the number three overall pick where is going to be expecting him to be great to begin with but we should appreciate. Patrick mahomes enough not to just grace. Everybody was mahomes to point out just like whenever they said matt jones had a little. Tom brady and it was like okay. He can throw the ball. Well what tom. Brady's tom brady because tom. Brady's brain is different than everybody else. Just like from home same thing but that has to be great to hear out of the niners faithful. Who thought they were getting. Mack jones for about a month and a half ended up trae lance but this also follows up with john lynch telling adam schefter jimmy garoppolo experiment. He's ever looked on schefters. Podcast felt like john lynch almost said. Hey in by won't come. Trade for jimmy. Garoppolo come on again. And then with what they're saying about trae lance is. Go ahead and do that. Great situation and being with two great quarterbacks in the nfl especially for a team that has been ravaged with injury over the last couple of years. I think it's all part of it. All can be true. Like yeah trey lance from the throws out there online. Yeah he looks really good jimmy g. Looks good as well. But i saw colin cowherd a couple of hours ago. Talked about it saying all you're saying when you're pump and trae lance up this much is that hey the price tag is. Don't come cheap if you want jimmy. G. like it's going to cost you. That's why if both are playing well and you can say that and you believe that you're in a great situation that's fascinating take 'cause my take is jimmy. G. gets hurt. You got a guy who could potentially win the super bowl. Maybe they're thinking he's mahomes two point zero and maybe their unit that way because the alex smith patrick mahomes situation as well where it's like the stories i worked. I was told from anonymous sources. Ooh okay and i'm normally not great this so i might give the person's name. The punter told me cocoa did tell me though was like yeah the the entire year there. What patch mahomes doing against the defense. Because you don't get any reps on the offense. When you're backup quarterback. I think james came out and said that basically the other day. We have said that a lot backup quarterback in the nfl although your job is very significant and important. You're not getting a lot of reps. Because why would you waste any reps between the number ones with anybody other than your quarterback whenever those things are so Paramount in this entire thing. But whenever you you think. About patrick mahomes slicing and dicing chiefs defense all year in the entire team watching it just like god. Damn alex smith was playing like. Mvp like football and he was finally in a situation where you had a head coach. A team around him and he was playing great football. They beat the patriots by like seven hundred. The first week he was in the mvp conversation. This was the alex smith. This was the alex smith that everybody was like. Okay finally number. One overall pick over. Aaron rodgers alex smith and although aaron and alex that thing he was wrong so when when they ship him out of town to washington and patrick mom starts against denver in denver. They win in and he's on the time there was a lot of myself included. There were like alex. Smith is finally playing great football. And you're just going to say get out. And then i got it. That's when i got an actual coke with that was like hey just wait until you say this fucking guy and that has been one hundred percent..

"Lakers. Is there seventeen time champions and that a number. I got my as on so missouri number. Seventeen for me. Well john. you're known to be a patriots. Fan and matt damon recently came out and said that if the patriots and the buccaneers were playing in the super bowl. He would root for. Tom brady well. They play in week four. Who are you rooting for. I would i would root for tom brady and a patriots jersey. I would wear a patriots jersey root for tom. Brady some sort of exotic dip involved chips. Certainly maybe some twelve layer caso obviously liked it. Okay go. I just need a little clarification. Does that mean that you root for tom brady to do well but the patriots to win or you flat out. What tom brady to beat your team. I don't have any stake in ownership in the new england patriots that there might team up. Thank you. I appreciate the not but no i just I don't know. I'm not really a dedicated fan to a team. You know. new england fans are harsh. And i probably am Stonewalling myself member. Returning to new england. But i just kinda like sports for the stories as we all do and when the stories are localized about boston ruined sports that regions fans get excited and of course now the rivalry between the patriots and tom brady makes that story a little more into weeds and more exciting. But i'm a storyteller. I really like the dramatic atmosphere. That sports uses a backdrop. Which is why. I'm drawn to sports but i i can't bind myself to geography. I like to see teams. Excel and i like to see. Certainly people like tom. Brady repeatedly excel at sport especially at his age and his output level is. He's an anomaly. It's it's it's really. It's really something to watch them. Listen to the eloquence sophistication in this. Get up in this very strange dichotomy Who baker was called a bully. And i said he was misunderstood. The team added freelance with the third overall. Pick in april's draft gene however responding to the challenge. Here's john lynch on his starting quarterback on the adam schefter. Podcast is brought the best at jimmy. Garoppolo jimmy zia a big time competitor. And you know we haven't played a game yet but it's playing his best football since he's been here and he's played a lot of good football. You just look at his record. It's something everyone's recognized and he's really plan at high level and that's what Competitors do when when they're challenged They rise to the asian. And i think he's doing a great job of that people. Say what do you do if they're both playing great. That's great another great problem to have and we'll deal with that when it comes again. John lynch on the adam schefter podcast. Max let's start with you. Who gives the forty niners better. Chance at a deep playoff. Run jimmy or is it tree. Lance jimmy g. Let's not forget jimmy g. It's not just that he went off to ano in new england or something. He wins three including the playoffs three times as much as he loses when he starts but because he's been injured so much we also have a large temple of times when he doesn't start so there's this seems to be this impression that you know shanahan could do this with anyone. And he's so replaceable. Well if that were the case then the wouldn't lose three times as much as they win. Same team it's perfect experiment. Same team pick jimmy garoppolo off replacement player right there. They go from winning three out of every four games. They play losing three out of every four games they play. He is making quick decisions. He's doing things that are helping. The team clearly remind them when last healthy for a whole season he was instituted. What pass away from beating. Patrick mahomes in the super bowl. One pass away. He didn't. it was a perfectly designed just didn't hit manual into stroke. It'd be next time he does like. It's a fifty fifty kind of thing. We'll drop was only like fifty fifty to hit a paul okay. So next time he does right. He gives them a chance. Now let's take that a guy who went last healthy for a season was in the super bowl with a with a chance to win versus the history of the nfl. The history of the nfl is first. Year quarterback ever has been to a super bowl has never been in a super bowl. Who started ever never patrick. Mahomes and alex. Smith patrick mahomes like trae. Lance could be amazing. What are the odds. He's patrick mahomes. Patrick mahomes alex smith. They went to the playoffs year. One with alex. Smith patrick mahomes held the clipboard. Next year he set the world on fire. I expect the same thing here unless garoppolo gets hurt. And he's injury but if he stays healthy he's the guy max i love. I love the perfect experiment. You just painted because all paint and even more perfect experiment. Let's go back to twenty twelve san francisco forty niners. Alex smith is. They're starting quarterback solid quarterback actually above average. Actually you could argue star quarterback. He was third in passer rating then. He gets injured in week. Ten and who does it get replaced by a more dynamic quarterback by the name of colin kaepernick and what colin kaepernick do during that year s. It was a second year and he played sparingly in year. One through five passes. What did colin kaepernick do during more dynamic player.

"That went. I would answer. I will answer. Yes the right. Now today. Trae lance shares of sit known going for no go in the future but the question was this trae lands. Have a better chance to lead them to the super bowl. They jimmy g. and we talked about it off camera. No rookie has ever won a super bowl. No rookie quarterback has ever won a super bowl. Hey has gone to the super bowl. Chris i'm not even sure rookie has ever super bowl. That that would be an interesting trivia of. Yeah go ahead. I'm sorry let alone one i. So i'm gonna go with jimmy. jimmy g. we know is deficiencies. I and i'm reading the same stories. You guys are reading. About how great trae lance looks how he allows kyle shanahan to open up his playbook in a way. The jimmy g. doesn't right. he's more mobile. he can run the football all that stuff. He's thinking everything up. And i think the kids be good eventually but his way one football game and the last year and a half two years and that was in the missouri valley conference now. We expect them to step into the nfl and command his team. Right away. I think there's look jimmy g. unfortunately probably is gonna get hurt as this year. I hate to put it out there like that. I hope i'm wrong but if it happens. That's when they'll move trae lancet but i think jimmy g. will start the season and if he's healthy he gives them the best chance to reach the super bowl he did do is a winner are he's twenty two eight in san francisco in in no same four years when he's been out that very same team. Yeah he's taking the twenty. Two and eight is seven and twenty seven wisconsin. Here are so something about him where he galvanizes a team and leased them. The victories i get it. When they went to the super bowl they ran the ball ton okay. i'm not saying. He's joe montana but he can win football games and they really were seven eight minutes away from already win the super bowl so i gotta start jimmy g. This could be an alex. Smith patrick behold situation and i'm not saying trae lamps. It'll be patent home but when you start the veteran who you know is good but not great for one year and then you turn the reins over to the young youngster and the rest is his. This is an insane experiment by the forty niners. I i know calcium hands a genius. John lynch drafting. I don't know what they're doing with trae lance. This makes no sense to me. The guy wasn't even twenty one when they drafted him. He's one of these one year wonders. What an incredible year of college any looks the part. So let's draft him. I'm sure trae lances talented. But this idea that he could start one for the niners and lead them to the super bowl is pure insanity. It's just not happening first of all the last rookie quarterback to even get to a conference championship game. I believe was mark sanchez with my jets. And he was a total game manager with an awesome defense and a great running game. You know the forty niners kind of have some of that. But mark sanchez. played board games in college. Then trae lance trae lance. By the way through three hundred eighteen passes in college that has the fewest of a first round quarterback. That's been drafted in forty years. The guy has no experience. Bussard just laid it out. He sat out last season. Played one game. You know basically a showcase game for me. I think he had two turnovers. But i listen. I'm concerned for the niners. Because they have a really good team lavar visit team that again like you said it was basically one garoppolo overthrow away from winning the super bowl. They lead by run defense like statements. Let ten with eight minutes left. And they gagged the game win another off. We gotta dumb jimmy garoppolo very confusing to me. I'm not out on links. Because i don't know him but i'm certainly not putting him in an alex smith. Mahomes sipe analogy that broussard's this used the answer. To the trivia question is no rookie has ever started in a super bowl so there you had that yes. I pulled that up. Technology does give you the ability to do that. Real quick these days You know still i say. Records are made to be broken. Rules are made to be broken. Who would ever thought that you could say that you win. More than joe montana. Joe montana was the gold standard of how you one as a quarterback in this league and look lo and behold haircuts tom brady and he totally destroys it and rewrite how that that that is a written and reported so when i look at opportunities i think ultimately comes down to the belief of the coaching staff and what they see and what they feel and it also comes down to the experience where you may you brought up the inexperience of trae lance but if the experience of the guys around him can shine then. That's where you're gonna see. The the opportunity for trade have success. But i do think that the logical answer is you gotta go with jimmy g. I smell a quarterback controversy in san francisco minds. Ad are getting some help from familiar faces next season. White howard is returning to la for his third stint with the purple and gold. After spending last year in philly. The lakers also came to deals with trevor. Aretha can phase more than wade ellington. All former lakers chris. Do you like lebron's t- bringing their old favourite back. I mean look. It always helps when you're familiar. We're playing with lebron. You know it's an adjustment plan with him so the fact that they've already done it that helps. Obviously they added. Some shooting is not great. shooting wayne ellington bays more. They shot it well last year. Trevor rees we know he's three and d guy but he's older. He's thirty six years old. And now the lebron thirty six so these are all guys. I do like the dwight howard addition. They missed him this year. They missed his banging. They missed his muscle. So they're gonna be big you know and they're gonna they're gonna be able to bully some teams so we'll see if they go that route but they do still need more shooting. And i hate the loss of alex caruso. I think that is big. I mean you have big guys. They're already right so this becomes a much bigger tame. They are going to play bully basketball. They're going to beat you up by not adding a whole bunch of shooting that we continue to talk about you have a slasher you have two finishers and they can create their own shots and and the three ad lebron and russ so to me. I think these are great moves. Because you're basically saying if you don't make your threes and you're going to try to beat us with three point shooting. You're only gonna get one shot. You're only going to get one side. There's not going to be second chance opportunities. We watched our olympic team struggle early on last evening because they couldn't get second chance opportunities. They were getting out rebounded horribly right so to me. I think that they're building the same makings of a team. That can out rebound you and make it hard for you to make plays i. Like what lebron's la fossils did yesterday picked up a lot of old guys fraternity here a lot of late night tv jokes and diapers and metamucil and all that silly stuff but the bottom line is the lakers are still.

"Second-guessing this now, like now that I'm looking at it. Yeah, I was surprised by that and I kind of I put it in bold and italicized it cuz it jumped out to me that you know, they just traded for golf and I was wondering if if that is more your evaluation of golf and you don't believe that he's going to be the long-term answer or you just like Trey Lance that much couple of things on that number one when I did this it was mostly I'm not the biggest golf fan and I'm like, you know, he's just a placeholder and you are wage. To him basically for two years, but you know you could do the Alex Smith Patrick Mahomes thing, which is what I would do because as we've seen there's nothing more valuable than a quarter bath and you know, who knows if Jared Goff all of a sudden takes off in Detroit, then you trade trade Lance or what-have-you Patriots quarterbacks barely ever lose value, but now looking at it off, I think they skip over a quarterback this year and but now now it gets interesting now that if Trey Lance or who have you exact William Wilson or Justin Fields, all of a sudden gets to say the 7 range and 8 range now, I think now I think you're looking at possibly the 49ers in the Vikings and you know, you look Washington and the Colts are going to be looking for a quarterback too. I think all of a sudden that's Prime trade area trade up and do the Patriots it that out. Watch other teams do that. I think that's sort of The X Factor. Yeah, it's interesting. I want to get to that in a couple of minutes because you think that's the the biggest question now that we have that Stafford's off the market. I just kind of look at them and I take the gist of it. Okay, you've got the Jags the Jets the Falcons the Panthers, I think you've got four teams in the top eight that want a quarterback and I think all of those teams will end up with a quarterback. I think one of those teams will end up with DeShaun Watson. So the way to look at this is the Jags the Jets the Falcons and.

"I would hang on the Garoppolo for a year. I would trade up a little bit to get Trail agents who has that Mobility. That would be a good fit for the Kyle Shanahan offense. I keep them together for a year. And then I do the Alex Smith Patrick Mahomes thing for Kansas City took a year to maybe even the end of his rookie year would trade Lance. That's what I would do. But again cuz I want to see the Patriots do well and I want the Patriots fans to you know, yep. Good teams to root for I personally want to see that make a big move for Stafford or somebody else like that and then deal off Garoppolo to the Patriots Yeah, another another thing that happened which is somewhat unexpected even though again, you never really know here. But Aaron Rodgers name kind of entered this where will he play pool of players a lot to do with his thoughts are disappointing loss and his postgame comments after it seems like and I know you wrote about this. It seems like the temperature came down on that a little bit on Tuesday Rogers kind of you know, you know backtracked on some comments there the CEO went on the radio. We're not nuts. We're not get rid of Rogers. So it feels like this might have been Heat of the Moment sort of stuff Rogers being Roger's passing the buck a little bit seeming disappointed and frustrated, but at the end of the day, I have to think this is more about a restructure or or a New Deal, New Jersey. Anything else? I don't see Rodgers moving but you thought it's possible because you've covered him and you think that if he's ever going to make a move like this. This might be as opportunity. You still get that? Yeah page thirty-seven thirty-eight. I think that once Rogers gets away and he talks to his people and any sort of thinks about things cuz he does he's a deep thinker I look it's going to come down to the contract or Rogers is going to force his way out like because he knows he knows what went on with Brady. Jordan was picked last year that irked him that they didn't get him more help instead. They drafted his Heir Apparent he still there. He was the number 3 QB this year. He wasn't even the back up and down Rogers is in the same position Brady was similar position. Not the exact same but similar position Brady was after the Patriots beat the Falcons in that Super Bowl the 2016 season where we go back. The off-season Brady's all gung-ho we all think he's going to get a five year contract extension that will at least keep him there for the next three years, maybe even the whole 5 depending on how things went and instead double-check said there was no contract extension Jimmy Garoppolo still.

Chicago's homicide rate decreases for the third straight year
"Three years ago Chicago saw a record number of shootings in two thousand sixteen more than four thousand people shot more than seven hundred fifty killed. That was the most the city had seen in two decades. Both Chicago in two thousand nineteen on a more hopeful note. Preliminary number I show a steep drop in shootings and homicides. WBZ reporter Patrick Smith has been following the stats and updates us on the new numbers and puts it all in perspective breath so there were four hundred and ninety two people murdered in Chicago so we talk about progress but still almost five hundred people murdered there. Were Twenty six hundred shooting victims terms and about twenty one hundred shooting incidents so that you know they're incidents where more than one person is shot so twenty six hundred people shot four hundred. Ninety people murdered both all of those numbers though are are better than than last year. I'm put that in context for us when we look at the past few years. Two thousand eighteen two thousand seventeen and then of course that big jump in two thousand sixteen right exactly so twenty twenty sixteen we had this historic increase. Since then. We've been coming down this year's numbers it's about ten the shootings down about ten percent compared to last year the doubt about thirty thirty five percent compared to two thousand sixteen so we are were were just about back to where we were before that two thousand sixteen spike in violence so that's the macro macro level but when we look at the neighborhood level and where we're seeing significant changes. What can you tell us about that? Well you're going to hear me say this a lot which is like comparing things to twenty sixteen and looking at that. Because we're we're seeing the biggest decreases on the west side of Chicago like The Austin Police District which covers most of the neighborhood of Austin on on the west side that had an almost twenty percent reduction in murders last year for twenty nine eighteen the other westside neighborhoods west areas had thirteen fifteen percent reduction then shootings the west side is what got hit the hardest in two thousand sixteen. It's where the violence was the worst in two thousand sixteen end for the first couple years after that twenty seventeen two thousand eighteen. Even there was some sort of stubborn violence levels. Were still remarkably high and some of those areas so we saw the biggest reduction on the west side their parts of the south side that also had reductions most of the south side and the north side had reductions in violence although there are a few neighborhoods that are still suffering. You know well not just all. There are many neighbors the city that are suffering from violence still but most of the the city saw. Sr Reduction in shootings here Turley back the interim superintendent of CD. How a New Year's Eve press conference releasing the numbers and here's what he had to say about why he? I thought this was happening. Some of the things that have allowed us to to make these reductions I've talked about Particularly our partnerships with faith based community and our partnerships with street outreach workers workers and our partnerships with community based organizations those are really important but also technology has aided Chicago PD okay so he's talking about partnerships and technology starting with the partnerships. What do we know about how? CD's approaching community in the shootings. Well one thing we know is that this this year You Know Actually Mayor Emanuel created it but then now mayor lightfoot invested more in the city's Office of gun violence prevention people are calling for her to do to invest a lot more money anything then what she has to sort of get us on par with New York and Los Angeles. But that's this office that suppose to give a comprehensive approach gun violence prevention. So it's not just about policing you know there was a lot of philanthropic dollars that went into gang outreach street outreach after two thousand sixteen and we actually heard you know I heard from Eddie Bocanegra. Who Works for Heart Lennon runs this outreach program called ready Chicago that that works with people who are closest to gun violence? He gave a lot of credit to two former Chicago. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson. WHO said that He? We really worked really closely with street. Outreach workers that there were district level commanders who worked with them at and coordinated with them and that it wasn't all you know police in law and order. I obviously the police are there to maintain law and order but that they knew that there were better and maybe other ways to approach gun violence besides just just going as hard as you could it at people when you say street outreach. What does that actually mean? So that that's a really good question so there are kind of different versions of that the sort of the version that maybe people are most familiar with. Is something like ceasefire. cease-fire what's called cure violence now where you have people who are former gang members people who are close to gang members who go out and just mediate conflicts and try to prevent people from shooting shooting at one another another Eddie Bocanegra who. I just mentioned. He used to do that. What he says what they're doing now and there are a few different organizations? That are doing this. You're just outreaching to say. Hey don't shoot each other you're saying don't shoot each other and we'd like to give you a job or we'd like to get you some therapy or we'd like to give you something we're not just saying don't shoot we're saying here's an alternative and so there has been more investment in that from from the private sector from philanthropic groups in the last few years. What's really but people have been pushing for the city to start investing more and paying for that to happen and so that you can give give people an outlet in an alternative to to you know violent crime so we hurt the interim superintendent they are also talking about technology? What role is stop playing? Yeah so that's something like the police in the last few years or put something called shot. Spotter which is supposed to use sound to detect. When there's been a shooting so they don't have to wait for nine one one call so police can can respond more quickly to them? There's also they've got more cameras that they've got these strategic support centers in the districts. That's supposed to combine all the different tech- technological the logical options. They have to sort of make response quicker and get more street level information to the police. You know that's something that University of Chicago really helped pilot. They've done research. It is their program program. But they've done research on their own program to say that they saw reductions in the district where they put that technology in their Beyond that you know. We have more police officers than we did. A few years ago there was this is pushed one thousand more police officers under Mayor Emanuel. That happened And then I think one thing that Charlie Beck is not going to talk about is just regression to the mean. Statistically we we had this huge spike horrific by two thousand sixteen were You know statistician might tell you that we're just sort of coming back to normal. I think the big question is going to be are. Are these reductions things where we can keep making progress and actually get back. Get back to a better place get better than we were before. Two Thousand Sixteen rather than just sort of getting back to what is honestly an unacceptable level level of violence five hundred murders a year. No one's going to tell you that. That's okay so we're we're we're back down about five hundred. The question is can we take that next step and actually see real reductions and not. Just get back to where we were before two thousand sixteen and put these numbers into context when we look at other big cities like New York or La. Well New York had a slight increase in its murders this year. La I believe leave state about flat. We still have a lot more murders here in Chicago Than New York and Los Angeles. It used to be that we had more murders than New York. Combine that's not exactly true. That's not quite true this year however they had If you put them together there at about five hundred fifty murders for this year they have millions and millions more people in New York in Los Angeles so as far as murder rate were nowhere near them we had about you know we had about fifty fewer murders in Chicago than New York and Los Angeles together so these are just preliminary numbers we should say a The official figures will come out after the FBI does their audit. How much of a change could we see between the numbers that are being reported right now by C. p. d. and the numbers that come from the FBI not a huge change For Murders for instance you know I think in two thousand seventeen the changes about seven murders from from when they preliminary members to what they actually sent to the FBI. So you'll see that change. I mean sadly that that some of that has to do with a person who shot on December thirtieth and then dies a few days later and that changes inches from shoot a shooting incident to a murder. Obviously all of this is very tragic. So you'll see some changes in the numbers but nothing that's going to throw off these percentages or the big picture takeaways Geico as well in a press conference earlier this week Interim Chicago Police Superintendent Charlie back and we have to stress here he is interim he. He's made very clear that he's not interested the permanent job but he laid out what he hopes to achieve while he is in office. What did he say? Well one thing that I thought was really interesting. He spent a lot of time talking about clearance rates. You know this is how detectives detectives do solving murders and he said that the CPT had a fifty three percent clearance rate this year. That's the highest. It's been in nine years you should look at. WBZ's chip Mitchell's is reporting to to see sort of diving into those numbers more. Not not this year but in the past of how they calculate those clearance rates. I won't get into it but it doesn't mean that they solve half of the murders that happen this year either way. It's great if they're at a nine year high. There was a report that came out earlier this year that really criticized the the detective division homicide Detective Division Chicago. Charlie Charlie back said he's going to be implementing things that were recommended there. I think that that's a big priority for him for his time. Here is getting our detectives to get to a better solve rate solving thing. More murders which increases trust in in in the department among residents and hopefully prevents future violence. So we have to again remind people that CBD's operating under a consent consent decree right now. Charlie Beck let the LAPD through its own consent decree at least part of it. How much power will he have to? Maybe implement some of the changes that are recommended in that decree. Well I think he has a lot of power of making it clear whether or not it's a priority and I wanna be clear that that what I've heard from people is that Eddie Johnson the former superintendent. This was a priority for him. Two people did believe that he truly believed in the changes but there are also problems where they said. There's not enough resources to this. Not everyone in the department is totally buying in. I think Charlie back with with the experience that he has might know what resources are needed to to get a higher level of compliance with the consent decree and make that a priority. I certainly heard from people who were hopeful about him. As interim because of his experience in Los Angeles as you mentioned that he'll make consent decree compliance a real priority of his interim administration and really quickly any word on the search for a permanent superintendent for CD. I have not heard any word. I mean the the applications I believe are due by the end of this week. Maybe next week I I expect that the police board will Abbas recommendations by March or April that's WBZ criminal justice reporter Patrick Smith Patrick. Thanks
