I'm on a bunch of pop culture podcasts this week. Did a rewatchables on Monday night. We did Black Hat. Also was on the Big Picture. We did a big Denzel Washington movie draft. I got way too competitive. And then on Wednesday night, Amanda Dobbins and I on the Prestige TV Podcast, we broke down the first two episodes of season three of The Morning Show. The most ridiculous show on television, not just this year, but every year it's on. It just wins the title automatically. If they had a ridiculous show category at the Emmys, they wouldn't even have any of their nominees. I mean, maybe winning time would get nominated. I don't know. But Morning Show just clears it out. What a batshit, crazy, ridiculous show. Wow. It's really like they created a podcast thing so we could just break down the morning show. That's really, I think, the real reason behind podcasting in general. Coming up on this podcast, Million Dollar Picks and a little Vikes Eagles at the top. And then editor at large at the Ringer, Brian Curtis, who was also a giant Cowboys fan, comes on and talk about the Cowboys. Could this be the year? Keep saying that, but could this be the year? And we talked some NFL stuff. We talked some sports media stuff. We talked about documentaries and just all the stuff that happens when Brian Curtis comes on. Oh, we talked about Joe Buck and Troy Aikman as well, who have hit a really interesting milestone as a combo. So that happened. And then Kevin Hench, my buddy, the Red Sox fired their GM today, and we couldn't resist spending 20 minutes recapping. One of the four -year oddest, strangest four -year runs the Red Sox have ever had. And we're still in the middle of it. And I still don't understand why Mookie Betts isn't on the team but also like, man, since the 2018 World Series, the Red Sox have just been a hot dumpster fire. And I say that knowing that they almost made the World Series two years ago, but when you look at everything that happened, wow. So Hench comes on and talk about that. It is all next. First, our friends from Pearl Jam. ["Pearl Jam Theme Song"] All right, I'm taping this part of the podcast. It is 11 .31 East Coast time. East Coast Bill is here. East Coast Bill is in Boston. I was visiting my daughter and doing some other stuff. And Thursday Night Football came on and I thought it would be a great idea to do the top segment after Eagles Vikings. East Coast Bill fell asleep at halftime. It was a new record for me. I guess I'm old. I have another birthday coming up this week. This is why I live on the West Coast because I talk about sports for a living. And East Coast Bill gets a little sleepy when the game is kind of boring and plodding along. So East Coast Bill missed some time, had to catch up, had to do a little rewind. Fortunately, there's so many commercials. I was able to still watch anything, but the Eagles beat the Vikings. They're now 2 -0 on the season. And I would say it's an uninspiring 2 -0. They probably shouldn't have covered against the Pats. They could have lost. This game they win, they don't cover. I guess on the good side, the DeAndre Swift, they traded like a 15th round pick in 2038 for them. And this little way they put together their offense where they load up on wide receivers, they hit the jackpot with hurts, and then they just say, you know what we're going to do? Just grab running backs because there's 98 of them every year. We're just going to grab two and pay nothing for them. So offensively, they look great. Defensively, you saw it last week with the Pats. The Pats were able to throw it on them. Mack almost had 300 yards in the last three quarters of that game. This game, Kirk Cousins, over and over again, heroically going for the cover, finally gets it. The Vikings cover, they don't win. Home team's now 5 -12 against the spread this season. Underdogs are 10 -7 against the spread. But for the most part, not allowed to report, the Eagles just state. They messed around in the first quarter and then said, screw it, and ran the ball down Minnesota's throat. I was thinking, Eagles, Cowboys, if you were going to make a combined over or under for wins for them, and I gave you 26, would you go over or under 26 wins combined for the two teams? They're 3 -0 right now. I would probably go over, especially when you look at the NFC and you think Philly, Dallas, San Francisco, lock those three down. I like Green Bay, Detroit, maybe New Orleans, Atlanta, and maybe that's the seven for the playoffs. And then you have Tampa Bay and the Rams. Who knows what was real and what wasn't real. Tampa Bay beat Minnesota by three in week one. We're like, oh, Tampa Bay, that's interesting. But now Minnesota's 0 -2, maybe that doesn't even matter. Rams, who knows? I mean, they just have so few good players that the moment two of them get hurt, it feels like their free fall will happen. So the NFC is already kind of uninteresting, I guess is my bigger point. Unless the Giants can rally, and who knows after the 40 -0 debacle last week, they're playing Arizona this week, so they looked out of that. But for the most part, it seems like three good teams, maybe the Packers, maybe the Lions, maybe the Saints, and then we're going to have a really bad seven seed. So if you're Minnesota, and you're looking at 31 of 270 teams started 0 -2 and made the playoffs since 1990. 31 out of 270. I can't do math, but that's not good. If you're Minnesota, at what point do you consider trading Cousins? Cousins was all over the place on the internet this week as a possible Rogers replacement. He makes 35 million this year, that's it. The Jets, I think, could do some chicanery if they wanted to. They have this thing where the Packers, it's a conditional, I think second, that turns into a first, but the Packers would have to waive the right for the condition. Clearly, Rogers is going to play 70 % of the plays, but still, they'd have to figure out some way. But if you're the Jets, could you somehow trade for Cousins and save your season? We're going to find out a lot about the Jets this week against Dallas. They get annihilated and they're one -on -one for the season, but annihilates Dallas them and they have to look at their offense and go, all right, we have a really good team. What are we going to do? Is it Jacoby Brissett or do we swing big and try to get Cousins for a year? Cousins has over 700 yards and six TDs in the first two weeks. He's been a fantasy god. I don't know how that plays out. I wish it was like basketball where I could just put stuff in the trade machine and see if it's going to work. For some reason, we made football trades more complicated than basically anything on the earth. I have no idea how the Jets would trade for Cousins, how it'd work, what the mechanics of it would be. What's he worth? Is he worth a first rounder for one year? Is he worth a third rounder? You just never know. Again, DeAndre Swift went for a 15th rounder in 2038. Cousins, I have my eye on because if you're Minnesota, you're not good. You were completely lucky last year to go 13 and four, whatever it was. Now that's evened out and maybe you start looking around and going, all right, let's pack in this year. I don't know what would have to happen, what number they would have to get to. Would they have to be one and four, one and five, one and six? But Cousins to the Jets, it's a fun talk radio topic, at least. We're not doing talk radio here. We're doing sleepy sports podcasting, but Cousins to the Jets has always felt right. It's always felt kind of perfect. He always just felt like a Jet waited to happen at some point in his career. The Jets fans listening to this right now are like, how can he keep doing this to us? We just had the Rogers thing. We had Zach Wilson. Now you're gonna throw Cousins at us. But again, Cousins, a little bit of a turnaround. He was in that Netflix show. He's kind of the big winner of quarterbacks with Mariota being the big loser. But I feel like the tide's turning on Cousins. Even Primetime Kirk today, always a disaster, gets the cover. Who knows? Put him in New York. We'll see. Philly's got, they're just basically have to figure out what their team is. They've already had a bunch of injuries and they even had a little AJ Brown, Jalen Hurts. Who knows what happened on the sidelines there, but didn't look awesome. But they have two months here to figure out their team. They're a big stretch. Week nine, Sunday, Dallas, that's home in Philly. Bi -week, week 11 at Kansas City on a Monday night. Week 12, Buffalo home. Week 13, San Francisco home. And week 14 at Dallas. So again, Dallas at KC, Buffalo, San Francisco at Dallas. And that's gonna be the five game stretch that determines are we a one seed? Are we a two seed? What is our season gonna look like? And they just have to get there. They have to stay healthy and they have to get to that point. So not a lot of lessons from Philly, Minnesota. Do I regret staying up? Although I guess I didn't stay up because I got this little nap in at halftime.

A highlight from The God Who Keeps His Promises
"Welcome to the podcast of first presbyterian church of gulfport, mississippi to learn more about our church our beliefs And our pastor, please visit fpcgulfport .org Throughout the old testament god made a series of incredible promises Promises that defied his people's expectations And in his time he fulfilled every last one of them in today's study of first kings 8 We'll consider the god who always keeps his promises Including those that he's made to you and I You know one of the very lowest or worst times for god's people Occurred back in the book of numbers is in the wilderness god's people were in the wilderness now Why were they in the wilderness? Well, they're in the wilderness because that's where they chose to be You see if you remember the story god had told them I have made you i've created i've set aside for you a promised land It's yours go for it And so they sent in spies to check it out to see what it was like to see if they indeed could take it However, when the spies reported back the majority of the spies said no way They said the land is great. No problems there. The land is great the problem is There are giants there. The problem is we're just a bunch of people in the wilderness They've got cities like jericho with walls that are high. They've got armaments. They've got soldiers who stand one and a half times above us God may have told us to go there, but we can't because we'll die And so they spent their time in the wilderness. And in fact a whole generation died out Of that level of distrust or lack of confidence what god told them to do So they're wandering in the wilderness. That's what made the book of numbers so sad They're in a place No one wants to go doing things that they shouldn't be doing and they do it for a whole Generation and they did it based on fear They did it on the basis of that. We just can't do what god has told us to do We know god is strong. I mean, of course, he's strong. Look what he did to pharaoh. He brought all those plagues 10 of them and yet And yet he won't do that for us. I mean he did it back then but You know that was then this is now They had enough faith to remember moses. They had enough corporate honesty to know what happened In their recent past and yet they didn't have enough faith to think that what god did in the past had any bearing on What he would do in the future god says go into the land. They say no We'll die despite the fact That one generation earlier god had literally swapped the armies of pharaoh under the red sea that god had brought down all these plagues If you're god, you're thinking to yourself, you know, I think i've made a pretty good case for myself Am I willingness to protect you? What are you doing? But the people were were fearful They're anxious God had made them a promise They just doubted his ability to come through on it Is that where you're at matters of faith a whole generation of israelites That's where they were at They had enough faith to believe god was there Do you believe god's there I hope so The problem was not that they didn't believe he was there And their problem was not that they didn't believe he'd done some really cool things a long time ago. The problem was They didn't think they would come through for them in this particular instance. No matter what he had said. They knew he'd promised They just doubted the reliability of that promise and for some of us That's our concern We don't doubt god exists. We know he's there Sometimes we doubt whether he loves us enough to count us in that promise And other times we just doubt whether he's actually going to do the very things that he said that he was going to do Well today's text we're seeing psalm is stopping the presses. He's taking the people by the lapel He's shaking him and saying dear heavens. Do you see what god has done? Not a word failed Of what he said not a word not a syllable has failed what he said he would do And he made some of the most amazing promises You could possibly make to people who are in no position to believe that they'd ever be received He told abram old abram and old sarah that they'd have a not just a kid But a progeny the more numerous than the stars in the sky It was a promise seemed unbelievable to fulfill and he fulfilled it to a t He's done everything that he would say he would do and the reason that was important for them And the reason that's important to us is because he's made you a promise, too He's made you a promise about your future And the question is can he come through will he come through In today's text psalm wanted to encourage his people and god wants to encourage us that the answer is yes Let's look at the first couple verses. Let's start with verse 54. Then. Let's work our way through the balance verse 54 And so it was when solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication to the lord That he rose up from before the altar of the lord from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up To heaven All right. Let's stop there in the verses immediately preceding today's passage The temple was done it had taken a while But the temple is now done and king solomon if you read earlier in chapter eight, he had prayed a lengthy prayer That's okay. He had a lot to say so he praised this lengthy prayer and during this prayer. He'd recounted god's faithfulness Sometimes that's okay, too We pray to god and we thank god and we remind god of what he already knows the things that he's done And by virtue of us reminding him of what he already knows we remind ourselves of what we need to hold on to going forward So he prayed this lengthy prayer and then he rises up and stands but as he stands he swivels And he looks out a bunch of folks whose faith was probably like a sine curve Ups and downs from person to person maybe from day to day maybe from hour to hour Solomon was looking at those who had doubts and anxieties not that different from those that many of us had He's also looking at some folks that he knew to be hard -headed You ever read moses experiences in deuteronomy ministering to god's people just hard -headed people David had had the same experience psalm and already as a young king. He had seen the same thing the people are hard -headed They not only tended to reject a lot of things that the prophets and leaders said But they also tended to reject what god had said, but god had still been faithful That was part of his prayer. Thank you god You've been so faithful we've been such such goofs we've done all the things we shouldn't do we've really messed up But you've never let us down You fulfilled everything to a t meanwhile. We're just staggering around the wilderness Even as they'd come into the promised land It's still their faith was like a sine curve and psalm praises says god. Thank you that you don't operate the way that we do Thank you that your promises are reliable So in verse 54, he wraps up this prayer and now again as he swiveled to talk to the people He wants to both encourage them and to challenge them. Let's see what he says in verses 55 and 56 Verse 55 then he stood and he blessed all the assembly of israel with a loud voice sang Blessed be the lord who has given rest to his people israel according to all that he has promised There's not failed one word of all his good promise which he promised through his servant moses If someone were to make you a promise What's the first thing your brain does? So it makes you a promise. What's the first thing you do? Well, here's the first thing I do You think through and you say well what other promises have you made in the past? Because I think i'm going to adjudicate Your ability and willingness to come through on this particular issue On the basis of whether you came through on other issues If someone makes you a promise you immediately you can't help it you think of the track record You think is this a reliable source? Of information promises and the like we consider a new promise in light of what has been done with the old ones Well in verses 55 and 56 Solomon says look there are still better promises yet ahead if you think that this promised land is cool Just wait till you see what is yet to come there's better promises of a better land. There's a better moses coming down the road There's all sorts of stuff in the future that we have to hold on to By faith and in order to believe those promises of that outcome you need to look back and ask Did god come through and what he already said he would do and in verses 55 and 56 he says yes He says look god said some amazing stuff in the past And he delivered he delivered on things that seemed impossible for him to fulfill and so with a loud voice in verse 55 He basically tells the people he says You are the most fortunate of all people because your god Unlike the gods of the philistines and the canadites and the moabites and the amorites and the hitites and the jebusites and every other Ite he says unlike them your god has an unbroken track record Unlike the pagan prophecies and pagan gods of stone and marble and wood That have failed consistently habitually That have let down the very people who have bent the knee to them unlike those people You have a god who came through on every last thing he told you he would Blessed be you and blessed be the name of the lord And he wanted them to remember some of the things that god had done in fact, that's healthy. That's why we read the book That's why we study the old testament And the new as we understand we remember what god has done and how that applies to us We think about the things he did how amazing they were and if he did those amazing things Maybe yet there'll be a resurrection from the dead. Maybe yet We'll all go to heaven. Maybe yet all the things for the future will be fulfilled if he's done all these things in the past You know, as we said some of the things that god promised Defied expectations and the belief of everyone who heard them at the outset I already mentioned abraham and sarah You take the old couple tell them that they're going to have a child and they've been barren all these years and where time has passed Sarah's reaction. I was just to laugh it seemed utterly implausible God made them a promise that seemed utterly implausible and yet he he came through Psalm looked out and saw the descendants He saw the fulfillment of this one promise Think even further back think of noah god promised to this one guy this one Paragon of virtue and just a sea of apostasy and unrighteousness he says it's going to rain But you're going to make it because you're going to build a boat However, it's not going to be just any boat You're going to build a boat big enough to fit all the creatures within the creative realm within it now dear heavens If there is a promise that just defies expectation and belief that it could ever be fulfilled. This is it Of course noah trusted god and went about building a boat in god's time It was filled with animals and god's time the rain came God made a promise that defied expectation then then he fulfilled it Just after the time of when they entered the promised land they came up to the city that god's people You know, they crossed the jordan they come in. All right, so we're in the promised land. Uh -oh. Uh -oh What's that big city with a big wall just right over there? Oh my stars. We made it across the jordan We're in the promised land, but now surely we're gonna die God says no, I promised you got this you got this I got this i'll take you through this And they're like, well how we don't have any weaponry We barely made it across the jordan. We've been in the wilderness. We don't look at that wall And god says hey and rolls up his sleeves. So this is proverbial sleeve so to speak and says tell you what Just march around the city playing the instruments in the light Do that. Sometimes the wall is going to come down who would believe that? Well, they did And god responded God made a promise and god delivered Back in deuteronomy 12 god had said this he says when you cross over the jordan and dwell in the land Which lord your god's giving you to inherit and he gives you rest from all your enemies all around so that you dwell in safely Then there will be the place with lord God your god chooses to make his name abide in deuteronomy 12 written during the time of moses long time before solomon God says this is going to be a future you're going to have a place and there's going to be a temple and in that temple My name will abide well again Psalms looking out at people who had anxieties about what would god do in the future and he says, please Look what he did in the past Please if you have anxiety about what the future holds if you have trouble believing Aspects of what the future the promised future to the church as a whole or use an individual, please Look at what he did in the past and see how he came through and understand. Nothing's impossible In fact god honestly a hundred percent delights in doing things you don't expect in ways that you wouldn't expect That's just the way he operates So he says here just hear the promises evaluate the promises against promises of old and understand That there is a track record that you can turn to whenever doubts strike whenever these concerns come to mind So in verses 55 and 56, this is what he's saying and he goes even further than that He says not only has god fulfilled all his promises, but not a word of them has failed It's not like he did everything in the abstract that yeah, he delivered, you know largely what he said he was going to do You're at a contractor If a contractor is going to build a house or you know Put up a shed or doing a number of different things and they go out They start to work on the thing and so forth and then when you're done you look and you say well He did largely what he said he was going to do. I mean, I don't love everything It's not all perfect, but it largely honored what he said That's the way most contracts with most individuals and everything work largely they're fulfilled Solomon says the contract the covenant the promises that god has made. It's not just that he fulfilled them largely He fulfilled them to the letter not a word had failed of all the impossible things That god told his people to expect unbroken track record. Let's look at verses 57 through 60 verse 57 And so may the lord our god Be with us as he was with our fathers May the lord god who did all that stuff long time ago to people that generations earlier May he do to us as he is done with them May he not leave us nor forsake us that he may incline our hearts to himself to walk in his ways to keep his commandments And statutes and judgments that he commanded to our fathers and made these words of mine with which i've made supplication before the lord Be near the lord our god day and night that he may maintain the cause of a servant and the cause of his people israel As each day may require god is the god of every day of your life Not just god of this whole thing or god of when you're finally saved and on the other side. He's god now Whatever you're doing today this week He is the god of this day verse 60 that all the peoples of the earth may know that there is a lord That the lord is god and there is no other All right. Let me ask you a different question. I asked one earlier. Let me ask you something different Have you ever had someone that you've loved or trusted? Leave you Have you ever had someone that you've loved or trusted leave you volitionally Have you had someone that you've loved or trusted walk away from you or reject you Neglect you although you needed them There's few heartaches for those who can relate to that There's few heartaches as great as being left by those that we love It can be just heart -rending to have someone's presence in your life there for a season and then in a different season in your Life when you desperately need them They're not there If you've experienced that You may find that even months or years later that the hole hasn't gone away It still hurts With that said notice what solomon said in verses 57 through 60 He said may the lord our god Be with us as with our fathers. May he not leave us or ever forsake us You know the gods of the pagans disappeared at times They went off and did their own thing, which is why elijah mocked bale and the others perhaps your god is sleepy We need to wake him up is what he told on mount karma what he told the prophets of bale The pagans had gods that could go away for a season the greek same deal That gods would be busy up on mount olympus, maybe they'd care for you one day maybe they wouldn't But here solomon tells his people and god tells us That he's with us just as he was with our fathers just as he was with moses Whether you're here your name is bob or stew or frank or fran God's with you. God's with you every bit as much as he was with moses That's an encouraging thought because We don't feel like moses most of the time But his presence is with us his presence is with our church And so solomon says, you know if we understand that and we cleave to him our future is bright It's so bright because the right man is on our side the man king. Jesus The right man is on our side, you know, even if the whole world should turn against you Which given enough time it might Even the whole world should turn against you. God won't even if every other promise is broken If even if every loyal friend breaks ranks with you in the time that they come god won't And when you're hurting in that midnight hour when you feel all alone, he says i'm with you And we got this together I'm with you and we got this. All right, let's look at our last verse verse 61 our last verse So now he's encouraging the people about how to respond to these promises and god's presence and the like verse 61 He tells the people and you can imagine his hands that he says it he says let your heart therefore Be loyal to lord our god Let your heart therefore be loyal to lord our god to walk in his statutes and keep his commandments as it is this day This is a benediction of sorts it's a blessing It's also an exhortation And in this exhortation king solomon tells people what he told them previously He says if we believe all this to be true if we believe there is a god in heaven if we believe that he loves us If we believe he's told us how to live Then the evidence of that belief is not simply what we profess with our mouth the israelis profess things all the time That wasn't their problem It's what they did with it how they acted how they responded Remember, we've talked about the difference between orthodoxy and orthopraxy orthodoxy is the easy part orthodoxy is just accepting propositional theological truth And saying amen. Amen what's harder is going out those doors and acting accordingly So solomon he puts his hands out and says hey Aaa Be careful to be loyal to our god and to keep his statutes his laws and his judgments Let me ask you do you remember you remember what your first car was? I got in trouble. I talked about cars recently What was it pinto? Was that what it was something like that? I got in trouble I called out a car and someone said that was my car. So i'm not gonna do that I'll call out my first car. My first car was a brown mazda b2000 pickup Man alive they were a lot smaller and they're making pickups these days pickups these days or something else You know, I had this little thing going down the road and like so I had this mazda b2000 pickup now I did love the car. It was my first car So of course, I loved it and I waxed it and polished it and shined it and like at first Then I went to college and still had the car and I had other priorities or other things that interested me other pursuits for my time and suddenly it wasn't even just a lack of washing the car Other things like I don't know oil changes just things that you just should do, you know, the common sense stuff I was like nah this This car hasn't let me down before right? I mean, I didn't give it an oil change in the last month So it probably doesn't need this one month. Well kick that forward a while. What happens i'll tell you what happens It ends up with me on i -5 north of eugene oregon on the side of the road having Say flipped a rod. I'm those you know cars better. I don't know what happened bruised a rod broke a rod Whatever there was a rod involved and it stopped working And so the car stopped working and it never drove again. That was it I kissed a goodbye it went on a tow truck and it was and it was gone We tend to prioritize the things that are important to us It's easy to ascend to propositional truth when it's right in front of us the people there at that time With the new temple and the hurrahs and you know the celebrations and the dinner on the grounds They were having back in this day. The people were excited. It wasn't hard to get them excited It wasn't hard for them to get amen and all that the hard part was in nurturing and caring For that which god entrusted to them down the road and for prioritizing the same things through their actions that they prioritize with their lips Right here and the sad thing was that they wouldn't When I say this is the high point of israel's history up to this point i've been it What does that imply? It implies that things got worse Which they did God made a promise I got you I got you in your future And they had made promises to the differences. They didn't keep theirs And so they backslid in the most egregious of ways to the point to the sad point as we studied in our review of ezekiel Last year whenever it was To the sad point that the same god who came to dwell in this temple in first kings chapter 8 would leave it and ezekiel 10 He would depart the temple leave it as ikabat empty of his glory There's things that have been trusted to matters of faith if you're a parent if you're a father There's things that have been entrusted to you to look out after your loved ones to nurture their faith To take care of their faith to take care of your own faith so that it doesn't get broken down on the side of the road When life circumstances throw you a curveball, which is inevitable There's bins in the road. You can't see coming So The way that we grow and sustain our faith is by immersing ourselves in the faith by doing what god has Said all right before we wrap up or in closing here I want you to notice at the very end of verse 61 He says something interesting and at first when I looked at this text a few years ago I missed it, but I don't want to miss it today verse 61 He said let your heart therefore be loyal to the lord our god to walk in the statutes and keep his commandments And then he adds these four words as at this day Solomon knew the people's history He wanted them to have that particular day emblazoned on their mind to do that Which they had promised to do that day in the time yet to come and yet As we said just a moment ago They wouldn't Roughly 400 years later after this text That day would be a distant memory and they would have forgotten it 400 years later there would be no more cheering There would only be what we call lamentation There would only be disaster Roughly 400 years later as we said before god's glory would depart the babylonians would show up. That's a bad trade They gave up the glory of god. They received the babylonians Ezekiel 10 says this the glory lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim and the cherubim mounted up from the earth in his sight Same temple look Can that happen to a church to a denomination a nation? Yes, yes, and yes It can happen if we don't keep the first things first It can happen if we don't prioritize that which we're called to prioritize It can happen if we stop trusting god and start trusting ourselves It can happen if we ignore what god has said in his word And start coming up with our own precepts and following the wills and wants of our own hearts In this passage that we've read today Solomon god through psalm is reminding the people that hey, there's some intentionality i've made you a promise and yet and yet There is a degree of intentionality on your part That your future is going to be heavily predicated upon. What will it be? What will it be are you going to be zealous to do the very things that you promised me on First kings 8 that you promised you say you're going to do you say amen. Amen. Are you going to do that? You won't if you're not intentional about it and in time In time the temple might be empty and in time churches or denominations can follow suit and if you don't think that's possible Go to europe Go to new england Just see places that once not that long ago resonated that once With at least a cultural religiosity And all likelihood of something far stronger now be turned to just empty husks of what they once were If it could happen in israel if it could happen in europe if it happened to england it could happen in the bible belt Our responsibility Is to cling to that which god has delivered us once for all through the saints And to champion no matter what the world tells us no matter what's going on in the culture around us Let the culture go to the wind This is what we're called to adhere to and salman put it before the people in an old testament context Said do this and live The same is true for us Let's pray Join, dr. A highlight from MARKETS DAILY: Crypto Update | Crypto Market Remains Tepid as Broader Economy Holds Its Breath
"This episode of Markets Daily is sponsored by Kraken. It's Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, and this is Markets Daily from Coindesk. George Kaloudis here again with your daily news roundup. On today's show, we're talking Bitcoin, the macro economy, the latest headlines and more. And just a reminder, Coindesk is a news source and does not provide financial advice. Bitcoin and Ether remained little changed over the past 24 hours, another sign of just how tepid the market is. Even the entry of payment giant PayPal into the stablecoin market failed to move the needle in any meaningful way. Both Bitcoin and Ether haven't moved much in price on the day and have had low trading volumes over the past few weeks. Yet another day of Bitcoin and Ether, the stablecoins. Bitcoin is currently trading at $29 ,482, while Ether is trading at $1 ,840 per token, according to the Coindesk market index. And shifting to the traditional markets and the broader economy, there are lots of things happening in the world economy. For one, the world's largest export economy in China has seen its export volume drop big time. Compared with those of a year earlier, China's exports to the U .S. and European Union plunged by more than 20 percent each last month. 20 percent. Geopolitical tensions between the U .S. and China have led to manufacturers from the West reducing their dependence on China. Not to mention, Covid induced supply chain scares have led to companies rationalizing their supply chain strategy. What's more, as the rest of the world faces inflation head on, the latest data shows that China actually could be in for some deflation for an economy that is predicated on explosive growth. If deflation takes hold in China, we could expect some serious stimulus packages. In that vein, China will release monthly inflation data tomorrow. Sticking with China, a headline from the Wall Street Journal reads, Country Garden, China's largest surviving developer, sinks into debt crisis. Country Garden Holdings, a property developer that has been lauded by China's authorities as a model for others, missed interest payments on two U .S. dollar bonds this week, marking a new stage of distress for the country's real estate market. So China is looking at falling exports, a potential deflation crisis and a deteriorating real estate market. Doesn't look so great for one of the world's largest economies. Moving stateside, last week, the U .S.'s credit rating was downgraded by rating agency Fitch. The downgrade was not matched by other rating agencies, else we'd be in a pretty scary place. But another ratings agency, Moody's, did cut the credit ratings of 10 U .S. regional banks. The moves suggest that Moody's believes, as do many, that the U .S. banking sector remains vulnerable. Higher interest rates and a potential recession in 2024 are the biggest threats to the banking industry at large. And lastly, moving underground, oil. Oil prices have ticked up over the last month and are at the highest level in three months. This comes as oil producers in Saudi Arabia and Russia have extended voluntary supply cuts recently as we approach a period of expected oil deficits. There is speculation that crude oil prices will move up as demand increases this summer and supply doesn't follow suit. Cartel economies with artificially controlled supply are fascinating. In any event, there is a lot going on in our macro economy, despite it being the sleepy part of summer. And there's plenty to keep our eyes on going forward. Moving on to the price of things with the indexes in the U .S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average is flat. The S &P 500 is down 0 .2 percent and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0 .6 percent. In Europe, the regional stock 600 and London's FTSE 100 decreased 0 .5 percent. Germany's Stacks, meanwhile, fell 1 .2 percent. In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is down 1 .8 percent. Shanghai Composite lost 0 .3 percent. And Japan's Nikkei 225 added 0 .4 percent. In commodities markets, Brent Crude, that's the international benchmark for oil, is down 1 .9 percent, trading at 84 dollars and 21 cents. Gold is down three quarters of a percentage point, trading at 1960 dollars per troy ounce. And First Republic Bank is trading slightly down at 32 cents per share. Today's traditional market coverage draws from The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch.

Dr. Jockers Functional Nutrition
A highlight from How to Burn Fat and Reverse Insulin Resistance with Dr. Jason Fung
"Like people are always they tend to overthink things, right? Things are not that complicated. Body fat and blood glucose are two ways that the body uses to store calories. OK, so if you have too much glucose, which is diabetes, or you have too much body fat, which is obesity, then you have too much stored food on your body. So if you don't eat, your body will use the calories that are stored as body fat or as blood glucose. That's it. That's all that happens during a fast. So why are people like fearing the fast? Like, why is it so bad to fast? When you fast, your body will use body fat. That's what it's there for. You're using it for what it's there for. So why not do it right? Don't overthink these things. After a fast, will you be more hungry? Yes, you might be, in which case you have to control the you know, you do have to control what you're eating. But on the other hand, you just have to understand that there's nothing intrinsically wrong with not eating. That's the reason that your body has has these sources of energy. We wouldn't have survived if we didn't have a way to store energy. We'd die in our sleep every single night, but we don't. So therefore, let's just use it for what it's there for. Yeah. And our ancestors, you know, go back a thousand years ago. I mean, we didn't have refrigerators, pantries, things like that. So it was very common they go through feast and famine cycles when food was available, eat as much as they could, and it was very satiating foods like you talked about, high in fiber, fat, healthy fats, proteins, things like that. So they were satiated and they couldn't really store much. And so there were times where they didn't have a good hunt or they didn't have a good harvest. And therefore they were in a season of fasting and their body had to adapt to it. And sometimes they would go days without food. And instead of getting weak and like just laying there because they didn't have any energy, oftentimes they got stronger. They got their senses were heightened because all of the hormonal mechanisms that took place, elevated growth hormone or epinephrine, different things like that, which gave them a greater ability to go out and hunt and be more successful and a higher probability of being successful because their senses were heightened. So it's interesting what happens. It's interesting. And it's all physiology. Like people like this is all sort of basic human physiology that we've understood. It's like first year medical school stuff, right? When you don't eat, insulin is going to fall, right? So your body is going to start liberating some of the energy that's stored. So glucose is going to go into the system. It's going to use body fat. That's fine. But other hormones go up. Growth hormone goes up, which preserves lean mass. Norepinephrine goes up, which is going to increase your concentration abilities. It's going to increase your senses and give you more energy, which is why we have all these studies, for example. Like they'll measure, say, metabolic rate. And after four days of fasting, what they measure is that the metabolic rate, the number of calories the body is burning is actually up by 10 percent. And people have known this forever. I mean, you think about the hungry wolf, the wolf who hasn't eaten for a while. Is it like just falling down tired? No, it's focused and energetic. That's what you want to be. You want to be the hungry wolf. You don't want to be that lion that just ate, you know, sleepy, you know, sort of like that food coma, you know, post Thanksgiving, sort of like, oh, I just need to lie down, sort of feeling like that's not energy. That's because you ate and you're you know, you need to digest.

"This episode of Markets Daily is sponsored by Kraken. It's Monday, August 7th, 2023, and this is Markets Daily from Coindesk. George Kaloudis here again with your daily news roundup. On today's show, we're talking Bitcoin, the latest headlines and more. And just a reminder, Coindesk is a news source and does not provide financial advice. Bitcoin and Ether are still rock solid. Both have proved remarkably non -volatile in otherwise volatile times. They're basically stablecoins. Bitcoin hasn't risen more than 4 % in a single day since June 21st. The lack of volatility has, of course, sparked market chatter about an impending volatility explosion in Bitcoin. But to that, traders, analysts and market participants remain unconvinced that volatility to the upside will come from anything except the approval of the Spot Bitcoin ETF. And so, yet again, we turn our eyes and ears to the institutions and the Spot Bitcoin ETF for some potential price movement. On the topic of institutions, MicroStrategy, the public company that holds 152 ,000 Bitcoin on its balance sheet, is nearly back in the black with its Bitcoin bet after racking up a paper loss of roughly $1 billion. That is genuinely impressive, given MicroStrategy was buying Bitcoin through the height of the bull market when Bitcoin was around $69 ,000. There were, of course, back then, silly articles and suggestions that MicroStrategy would have to sell its Bitcoin into the open market as the price of Bitcoin fell from its all -time highs, leading to a death spiral in price. But that fear seems to be overblown, at least for now. It's a sleepy, sleepy summer in the markets at the moment. Today's crypto market coverage comes courtesy of Coindesk Markets analyst Lilo Ledesma, and I'm cargoed with Bolle. Bitcoin is currently trading at $29 ,019, while Ether is trading at $1 ,827 per token, according to the Coindesk Market Index. In Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is flat, the Shanghai Composite is down 0 .6%, and Japan's Nikkei 225 increased 0 .2%. In commodities markets, Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil, is up 0 .4%, trading at $85 .80. Gold, meanwhile, is flat at $1 ,975 per troy ounce. PayPal to issue dollar pegged crypto stablecoin based on Ethereum. Global payments giant PayPal is launching its own U .S. dollar pegged stablecoin, PayPal USD or PYUSD. The Ethereum based token will soon be available to PayPal users in the U .S. and marks the first time a major financial company is issuing its own stablecoin. Users can transfer PYUSD between PayPal and supported external wallets, fund goods and services purchases, or convert any of PayPal supported cryptocurrencies to and from PYUSD. PYUSD will first be made available on PayPal's popular payments app Venmo. Meanwhile, PayPal said it would provide a tested reports of the funds backing the stablecoin in an effort to thwart concerns about unbacked tokens. Elsewhere, WorldCoins Nairobi warehouse raided by Kenyan police, according to local reports. Kenyan police raided the Nairobi warehouse of identity and cryptocurrency protocol WorldCoin on Saturday, confiscating documents and machines. This comes after Kenya's Ministry of the Interior suspended the project's operations in the country last week. The raid was reportedly conducted under the supervision of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, who said Tools for Humanity, the parent company of WorldCoin, failed to disclose its true intentions during registration of its operations. Moving on to our last update on CRV. Curve recouped 73 % of hacked funds, bolstering CRV sentiment. Curve Finance, which recently suffered an exploit, has recouped some 73 % of funds stolen during that hack. The hack saw the platform lose over $73 million worth of various tokens, causing contagion effects in the broader ecosystem. Over the past week, all $22 million in Ether and Ether derivatives stolen from lending protocol Alchemax -Fi, which is part of curve, were returned. Still though, over $18 million in stolen funds are still remaining. And on Sunday night, Curve opened up a bounty to the public. The protocol itself added, quote, if the exploiter chooses to return the funds in full, we will not pursue this any further, end quote. Former US Attorney Jay Town Talks About Bill Barr
"Sit and talk to Bill Barr was like, across between talking to your dad, an attorney, and the school principal. It was like, you wasn't sure what you were going to get from it, but it was. You just nailed it. Well, if it was 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., there was sort of a different flavor of the bill you were getting, right? And look, all three are very different. Jeff Sessions had a sort of soft southern style to him, Matt Whitaker is a good friend of mine. I was actually with him last week, and he was, you know, he was in a room he was acting for a few months. And did his level best, but general Barr, Bill was, you know, look, he came in at a very awkward time to come in as the attorney general. You have these investigations into the president of the United States, the Mueller investigation being the most prominent. And then, you know, you fast forward, I think maybe less than a year, and then COVID hits, and then you have that summer of unrest. You have the Derek Chauvin, George Floyd, incident, which caused more unrest around the country. And then you have a lot of election issues that were very complicated and he left before January 6th, but that was also a part of Jeff Rosen when he was the acting attorney general after Bill. You know, we used to sort of quip that sleepy little Department of Justice. You know, nothing ever going on. It was, and I'll say this, Doug, it's important that when you're out in the field as a United States attorney and you're running an office of a 150 people, you got 60 assistant U.S. attorneys as the U.S. attorney you're in charge of all the prosecutor investigative agencies so the FBI DEA ATF, Secret Service Marshals. And HSI and when you have the chaos in Washington D.C., which might as well be half a block down the road when you have that type of chaos. It does impact all of the 93 U.S. attorneys in the 94 U.S. attorney's offices.

The Hugh Hewitt Show: Highly Concentrated
Who Is Watching the Eyes of the CCP?
"You received an invitation or you asked for an invitation to speak to the Republican governors associated to the national governors association. NGA. And they said, huh? And you showed up and you told them that each of them had been classified by the Chinese government, that got their attention. When you tell the audience a little bit about that story, which they've got to read in full to appreciate, but the CCP has a file on every governor and they are classified. So I had seen hints of this when I was a CA director, but I became Secretary of State. I was able to see it more clearly. And I was able to get this document declassified. It was written nominally by a Chinese think tank. But what they've done at the direction of the Chinese Communist Party was to continue to evaluate all 50 governors of the United States of America. And they would rank them. Friend foe or were working on them. And by the time I got it to classify, I'd also noted that there was a meeting in Washington, D.C., where all the governors would be. And so I called governor Hogan and then governor of New York, Cuomo, and asked for 20 minutes. They gave me 20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. It was pretty sleepy day. But when I began to lay out for them the fact that the Chinese Communist Party was watching them, observing them, running influence operations against them and had measured them, had raided them, essentially said, do we have them in our pocket yet or not, boy, I had their attention. They all, they all turned immediately to their devices or to their chiefs of staff and says, hey, I got to have a copy of that. I got to know where I am. And I wanted them to just be a little taken back, but mostly I wanted to remind them that this isn't just an attack on our federal government. It is at every level of our government today that the Chinese Communist Party is conducting its assault against our freedoms.

Rep. Comer Spoke on the National Archives 22 Hours Before Biden Story
"Because I don't believe in two seconds that no past president or vice president or attorney general Secretary of State doesn't have some document at home or didn't destroy some document I don't believe it at all Is that something you'll look into Yes in fact the national archives is under our jurisdiction in the oversight committee This used to be just a sleepy government agency that was required to give us an annual report in the oversight committee I was the top Republican so I had to be there and the chairwoman was chairwoman maloney from New York Well I think we were the only two in attendance The last time they came before the committee so they never really made any use And you're exactly right We've gone back and investigated every president and vice president has inadvertently taken documents with them There was never a raid on their private residence I sincerely believe in I don't have the evidence We're going to look into this But I sincerely believe that that rate on Mar-a-Lago was triggered by the January 6th committee just doing a fishing expedition to see if they could find anything Anything they could use against Donald Trump So that was wrong Every request we've made to the national archives they referred us to Merrick Garland So not in a good position with the Republicans now This is another agency that I was wanting to withheld their funding until they came in front of us and answered a lot of questions that we had Unfortunately the Senate again didn't do us any favors But September 30th will be here before you know it And we're going to again demand that they give us some answers as to what went on and what actually triggered that right And we have evidence where other president in both parties had inadvertently taken document tone before and nothing like that had ever happened previously So

Amber Athey: Pres. Trump Gave a Measured, Disciplined Speech
"First first things first last night was the Trump speech You know it's interesting I'm trying to cover it in a really kind of sober way so everybody feels comfortable here regardless of who you're going to support in the primary Everybody knows my personal feelings I've aired them a thousand times but I thought the speech was different for Trump because it was very issue oriented And it was characterized by a lot of people is boring Which is interesting because I think it was any other politician amber would be characterized far differently but because we're so used to Trump and the bombast and he's just his general temperament during speeches that he's just almost can't win when you're him anymore You stick with the issues you're boring you go off the cuff and say stuff you're a lunatic you know your Hitler or something like that He's gonna rough spot your thoughts on the speech Yeah I mean I like to see it I think it was pretty funny to watch people characterize it as sleepy or low energy hearkening back and forth to Trump's own attacks on Jeb Bush back in 2016 because typically the words that would be used to describe a speech like that would be measured or disciplined or focused It doesn't get that luxury And I like that he talked about the issues and again it's kind of funny to hear the same people who constantly accuse Trump of being divisive and overly bombastic Also criticize him for the speech that he gave last night But I gave it a good review I like the speech I thought that he did a good job of contrasting his own presidency to the current administration and just sounded really hopeful and optimistic for the future which I think is what the country really needs right now

And while TikTok is fun for the youngsters, it's the latest place for the youngsters to hang out. There's a lot of strange things going on with TikTok that is problematic. One of the latest trends, cooking chicken in cold medicine, where people take chicken breasts and then dump NyQuil all over it and then cook it. Sleepy chicken NyQuil chicken call it what you want. Doctors call it dangerous. And I don't know why people want to do this in the first place. Some people do what I think to start off as a joke, but then some people take the challenge and don't realize when it's a joke. Sure, you can do the ice bucket challenge and that's not harmful to people necessarily. But then you can just do things that are stupid. And these challenges get more and more bizarre as everybody tries to one up another person. Doctors are saying this is dangerous. This could cause death, but it doesn't stop kids from trying and having fun and trying to be silly and stupid and will get attention. They just want to be a part of the crowd. That's scary.
