That's W I X DOT COM in. Stay tuned after the show to hear you can take advantage of Wick special offer for talking tech listeners. I've been playing all weekend with the new iphone in eleven as a camera. I'm Jefferson Graham. You're listening to talking tech. I know you want to hear all about it for the first time in years. There's actually a real difference photographic photographic with the new eleven pro models two big things now you have three lenses instead of two on the previous plus models and you have the ability to shoot in virtual. Darkness both are really cool. The third lenses probably the thing that you'll use more often. The darkness thing is a gimmick but what a gimmick I invite you to take a look go to my youtube channel. YouTube dot com slash Jefferson Graham or go to USA TODAY DOT COM and check out our gallery and you'll see the images. You'll let's see the photos you see it all. I also have some on my website. Jefferson grab dot net. How's that for a lot of promotion. Let me tell you about what's going on. The Third Lens is an ultra wide dangle similar to a go pro or the lens that went on the Samsung Galaxy S. ten earlier this year. It's a little less distorted. Apple is a little better photographic weekly then Samsung so that's really cool basically what it does is it will open up your landscape shot and give you a much wider point of view if you're taking a picture of a mural all in downtown L. A. Like I did it will get the whole mural as opposed to just part of it. In the past I would have to reach to a panorama nightmare. You can shoot in total darkness darkness and get a really really nice looking shot. That looks like it was lit. What you will have to do is hold? The camera steady apple is basically taking eight photos of the same shot and merging them all together to bring in the brightness and the colors is similar to HDR photography and it's pretty pretty cool. I think you'll have a lot of fun with it. What you will not get is great lighting tricks for video. It's the same video so if you're going to try to shoot a video in low light. It's going to look pretty bad. I was Kinda surprised. The video and good light is as great as any iphone has ever been of the iphones are expensive. It's not cheap getting these great cameras this. You'll only get them. If you're going to spend a thousand dollars or eleven hundred dollars to start on the iphone eleven pro or eleven pro Max if you've got an older phone and and you only take average daylight shots you're not gonna see that much of a difference. I defy you to find the difference but on the low light and the third lands were the edition. If you've got the bucks go for it questions from twitter where I'm Jefferson Graham. "Can, too. Just a handful. A tickets still available at WGN radio dot com slash Jefferson. We need to have that attorney and women's, she's representing Veronica back sometime in the next week or so just to follow the story because it was kind of frustrating, wasn't it? There are a lot of unanswered questions. My buddy art here says, I don't think this is the city's problem. Thank you. Art. This from seven seven three. I have a somewhat similar story that my girlfriend experienced when she led her nephew use her car, he unfortunately, had an accident, her car was disabled, they said it was going to be towed to a city pound on lower Wacker drive, but it wasn't apparently they left her car at the crash site never towed it. I happened to look it up on the city's ticket website and her car had accrued several tickets from being left at the crash location. John was on hold. So I could have answered your question insurance does not pay for damages caused by criminal acts. So the insurance company isn't going to be a source for this family whose I won't even go into all of the details. John sounds like veronica's leaving out some information. So as their attorney, a lot of you are a little dubious about the version of the story, I was giving you, but we'll continue to follow that. But a couple of you'll here it is. Is this the one L if? Found it because it involves an alderman in Chicago, and an Audi so and I couldn't find the other story that listener Texan, not sure if this is it or not. I won't take the time right now. But, but. Steve, maybe you remember but, you know, this business of the city toes, your car, maybe you did nothing wrong. There's a mistake with who's card is or whatever. Then the city says, we've got it. It's crewing daily fine. And then if you wanna back, you've got to pay a lot of money and you didn't do anything wrong to begin with, that's the case of this. Veronica woman, but didn't that happen to an alderman or state, lawmaker their nephew or somebody was driving their car was involved in an accident? Or maybe or something the then he was on the hook for it. And he did nothing wrong, and he made great efforts to try and get that resolved that is legislatively. And I that's all I remember. So if anybody else can fill in the blanks, we should go to ask him, but his experience, I think you're talking about an incident that involves Senator John colored tin. His son. Sound familiar? I don't remember all the, the car impounding and all of that stuff. All right. We'll we'll continue to work on this. Continue to listen to WGN for details this week and for the rest of your adult life. Speaking of controversial laws. Alabama's governor has just signed into law, a Bill, that outlaws abortion, the only exception being if bearing the child could lead to the mother's death, where if the child might be stillborn or die after birth the law doesn't go into effect until November, and maybe it will never go into effect, given the inevitable court challenges, but you've probably got some questions about what's happening here. And I do to Dana hall. Mccain is a countless for a host of Alabama newspapers, and she joins us now on WGN. Hi, dana. It's john. You're on WGN in Chicago. How are you? I'm great darn. Thanks for having me. So AL dot com, Alabama dot com, AL dot com is where I find you your opinion pieces appear in newspapers in Huntsville, what other cities, do they read you in down there. In Birmingham, and mobile Alabama. Got it. So what's your beat them the political scene? Cover the intersection of faith culture and politics, which is, as you can imagine never ever controversial. Faith culture and politics. Suppose politics and faith are more interwoven in Alabama than they are in Illinois. They are intrinsically interwoven. We are a largely evangelical state and really since the nineteen eighties with the rise of the moral majority, and what we know now as the religious right there has been sort of a conflation of, of faith, and political activism, in the deep south, and Alabama certainly exception to that states are sovereign. I got into an argument with some friends in a podcast that we did today. And I said the people in Alabama can do whatever they want, and they don't have to care. What some slick talk show hosts in Chicago think they're, they're sovereign. They they get to enact laws. Anyway, they want, and if they stand up to a court standard than than that they win they get to do whatever they want. But there is also this notion of a separation between church and state. I just wonder what your thoughts are about that. General divide down there. When we talk about, you know, the reason for in acting pro-life legislation, obviously, for people on a personal level their views on life into thank are often rooted in a religious worldview, or a biblical worldview. But also for people who are, you know, scientific thinkers and constitutional thinkers, they believe that the preponderance of science right now, though. You know, wonder about when life begins, we, we look at children now forty pounds in the womb and watch their song, then and kick and make funding expressions. And they are undeniably, human beings. And, and so if you, if you understand that they are human beings in the win and understand that our positition, protect life, and liberty for, for all people. Then it becomes just a constitutional issue, and it doesn't really have to be anchored to particular religious worldview, and I guess, that's why there's no exception for rape, or incest, here. If it's life at conception or six weeks question. Yeah. It's a question of person hood, it's a question of when science tells us that a person is a person, and I, you know, legislators in Alabama introduced still have made no bones about the fact that it has been written with very bold stroke with no exceptions for the very reason of establishing the person who argument for future legal challenges their their, their legal strategy. Here is to have this law challenged by the federal court with the hope that it will travel all the way up judicial chain to the supreme court, and we'll be the catalyst for a new examination of his way. I wonder if they'll writing that stringently almost dooms it. I mean, if they really do on, well, love Boertien, or make it more restrictive in Alabama. Maybe they should have dialed it back this makes sense. If you're looking for a fight, but it might not be a very practical solution. Shen. That's a that's a fair point to make. And, you know, legal analysts have been all over the board. You know, listening to people discuss the, the effectiveness of this strategy over the past three days since the Bill was passed by the Alabama Senate opinions vary widely about whether or not this is the most effective way to, you know, fully produce the number of abortions zero in the state of Alabama, and I guess, only time will tell how the courts will treat it and, and what, what will happen there, a lot of us have seen pictures online in the reporting of this of the twenty five white men in the Senate who voted in made this reality. But it started in the house, can you talk about the demographics who voted for this dude, any women vote for this did any Democrats vote for this. Yes, the Alabama legislature on both sides, overwhelmingly Republican, and overwhelmingly conservative. And there are not enough women in the Alabama legislature. But many of the women who are, there are staunch pro-life conservatives. And that's just, you know, they are a derivative of the culture that we live in. They are overwhelmingly evangelical and, and overwhelmingly conservative, and pro-life. There. They're a lot of pro-life women in the state of Alabama. And I'm not exception to that. So I understand. But so it didn't cut up a gender line racial line. I'm just trying to think of you would think that the Democrats, for instance such as they are down, there would be fighting this where they the Democrats. Absolutely. Yeah. The democrat in the in the Senate walked out of the vote and, and didn't even participate with hotly contested by them, but they just really have the power. I mean, we have a super majority right now. And so, you know, they can they can make a you know, an, an oral Jack Jackson and let the record showed they were against this legislation, but they've really lack any Maine's stop it. If the belief is that like begins at conception. What about in vitro, if a couple is conceiving that way, then are those lives protected or what's the status of that? That's an excellent question. And there was some discussion in the Alabama Senate debate about that nuance in the law. And I believe there's actually language in this Bill that talks about this applying to unborn children in the win. Yes. Right. Would not apply to embryos that are frozen and fertilize and sitting and waiting to be implanted now on an ethical level. I think it's a question that deserves pondering if life begins at conception. And, and we may as this debate progresses, get to a place where that, that's something as a culture that we began to discuss more and, and decide what we think about that. And I understand you description of the constituency there in Alabama. But I also have seen in a number of places today. The one in four women have had an abortion, I find that hard to believe, but let's assume for a moment, that's true. I wonder what women generally in Alabama think if twenty or twenty five percent of them themselves have had this procedure. Extraordinarily difficult to believe particularly in the state of Alabama where there are only one or two twin aches that provide abortions. I mean, it would be almost logistically impossible for one in four women to a have had been need and be have had access to the services that I I'm going to push back on that a little bit. And say I, I find that to be a bit inflated, especially in a state like Alabama. Perhaps, but I don't think that would be the case there. So it passed the house. What was the vote in the house? I do not have that number in front of me. I wish I did. Passed easily I can tell you that and Beazely passed the Senate. And then the, the, the governor seemed to be a little cheeky about her affiliation with this. She was saying up until the time she signed it in private that she would wait to see how it was written. Was there any doubt, though, that the governor would sign this? I don't think there was because governor IV has been on the record for many years as a supporter of the thanked t of lie. And, you know, the stage was set for this back in two thousand eighteen when Alabama voters passed a constitutional amendment, affirming, that we are state committed to pro-life values and restricting any usage of state funds for abortion services. And, you know, a lot of people saw that as a as a fluff amendment because as long as rosy, wait fans. It didn't really have any teeth but it was. Throwing down the gauntlet I felt like and Emma, governor was very much a proponent and in favor of that particular amendment that even though she hoped her cards, pretty close to her chest, about particular vote, a lot of times, and she's careful about what she says. I don't think there was ever any really any doubt that she would sign the Bill O eilly, lots of calls and texts about what they're doing. An ala Bama might standing is the Bill won't become law, even though she signed it until November. And that's if it survives, whatever court tests away to Dana hall. Mccain writes, about faith culture and politics, columnist at AOL dot com. Series of newspapers down there. I need to take a break..

The joy of photographing in the rain --with a smartphone

"Talking tech is brought to you in part by northwestern. University offered in partnership with north Western's Feinberg school of medicine. The program prepares students for emerging opportunities across the healthcare spectrum. Details are at SPS dot northwestern dot EDU slash informatics. So I just photographed a winning in the rain this weekend. And it's an interesting experience I had to shoot through a garbage bag to protect my camera that said in Los Angeles, we're having a very odd season in that. It's raining a lot now to those of you outside the LA that doesn't mean anything, but for us, this is different. And I went out to photograph the rain in L A because it it looked so different. It looks amazing colors and reflections, and I learned something big doing this exercise. Which is why am I shooting on a camera? I love my camera. But my smartphone is water resistant. This was such a liberating experience with a smartphone. I could do anything I could shoot in fountains. I could shoot in puddles and not have to worry about the camera. So if you wanna shoot in the rain, which I highly recommend again, beautiful reflections, a whole different look to your urban environment. And you're not shooting on a smartphone. And you want to protect your camera. I have a few tips one reach for the umbrella. It sounds obvious. But admit it, you didn't think of it because most don't shoot with one hand hold the umbrella in the other you can get a camera covering or a garbage bag this garbage bag work rate. Just smash a hole through at tape tape. It around your camera, and you are quasi protected. I don't know what would happen in a flood. But in addressable, it was fine stand under an all kkob and Onnaing an alcove any type of shelter will provide you cover and keep your camera dry. You can shoot from the car roll down the window and heavier camera protected, but my best tip use your current smart. Phone and just go crazy. Any of the recent like two years to three years additions of smartphones are water resistant? You can snap in the rain. I mean, I ran as I said, I ran into a fountain. I pushed the camera into the water a held the camera up to the skies in let the rainfall drop all over the phones without any issues. And I got terrific footage to is one big issue that you wanna be aware of while you're doing this, which is the touchscreens of the phones are not as responsive when they get wet. You'll need to have a towel or cloth to dry if your hands and the front of the smartphone for successful navigation. I invite you to watch my snapping in the rain video, which is on my YouTube channel, go to YouTube dot com slash Jefferson Graham, and let me know what you think of the video ad love to hear from you on Twitter where I'm at Jefferson Graham, you've been listening to talking tech. If you should photos and videos on your smartphone and you're listening to the show, then you've no doubt been frustrated by the limitations of your smartphone camera. On one hand, it's one of the great achievements of our lifetimes phone. It takes amazing shots in great light sometimes as good as regular camera if not better. But with a fixed lens, you could only go so far so wide. So close, which means you lose folks in group shots portions of a scenic or something as simple as a welcome to side. So let's take a look today at the moment, smartphone accessory lens, another in our series of photo off mobile tools. To make your travel photography more. Awesome. I'm Jefferson Graham with USA today in you're listening to talking tech. There are several companies making accessory lenses for smartphones and aloe clip is probably the best known. They sell affordable little lenses that clip over your smartphone camera and usually give you both a wide angle and telephoto lens that sells for round one hundred bucks in my experience, the wide usually look decent in the telephoto was kind of sketchy. So I've really come to enjoy the quality from Seattle company called moment. You'll pay twice as much for what you get, but I think you'll end up with more than twice the quality for your money moment uses real honest glass in their lenses, which perhaps Allah clip does as well. But you know, these ones feel like lenses, not sunglass shades to stick over your bifocals moment has five lenses available wide angle telephoto super wide angle macro and an and more Fiqh they sell around ninety dollars to use them. You'll need to buy a moment case. Which sells for either thirty bucks or ninety nine dollars. The lenses screw into the cases right over the camera lens, and you get a choice of a plane protective case or one that comes with an extra battery to extend the life of your phone. I've been using the white Angolans which according to moment will extend your vision about two times. The iphone main camera lens is twenty eight millimeter equivalent wide angle and moments says that it's white Angolans will get you down to eighteen millimeter more than enough to open up your group shot and get a complete sign in the shot. I've made a video showing back to back comparisons on my YouTube photo, walk channel. Invite you to take a look. Just go to YouTube dot com. Slash Jefferson, Graham. I was really happy with the photos taken on the lens. They're sharp and crisp and a welcome lifesaver for key shots. What you probably won't like is walkie around with a phone case that has a little lens hanging over it. If you like to stash your phone into your pocket, this could be a problem. I was able to still put the phone. In my pocket, but with a lend sticking out and I did survive if you don't want to put the phone in your pocket and the have the lens hanging out of it moment cells little cases for you to travel. It will hold two lenses and ladies. Y'all might not have a problem, just putting it all in a purse or backpack. I just hope you can hear the phone ring when it's covered up of the other lenses, which I didn't try the super wide landscapes gopro like, look without the distortion according to the company. The macro lens will help you get even closer to those popular food shots moment calls it like a magnifying glass and the telephoto lens would double the focal length of the portrait lands on the iphone, seven plus eight plus or iphone ten bringing you to around one hundred and twenty millimeter. The Anamour Fiqh lens gives you the wide screen look like. You see at the cinema now moment tells me that the wide and super wide lenses are the bestsellers. For good reason. They expand your vision of what you could do with a smartphone. I bring a camera with me almost everywhere I go, but I also grab many of my trash. Photo, walk shots with a smartphone. I would not go on the next occasion without a moment. Accessory lands in my bag. Check them out in once again, look at the back to back shots at my YouTube photo, walk channel, YouTube dot com. Slash Jefferson Graham for my video review. And of course we also have travel videos about what the shoot in some of your favorite southern California locations. I'm Jefferson Graham.
