"Repeating that process over and over again really helped me to develop good solid problem solving skills that I would take later into my career. And you know, you were absolutely national bank for a long time, like almost 9 years. And even after that, you worked at a couple of other places for a pretty long time. You worked at slalom consulting. You worked at junction ecommerce on demand. Like when you look back at these experiences collectively, what do you remember? I definitely remember leaving city national bank and making that decision. What caused me to leave, for me, money isn't everything. And what's more important to me, or at least what was more important to me at the time was growth opportunity in learning. I felt like I needed to learn and grow, or at least get paid really good money. To stay in my seat. And at the time, I felt like I wasn't really growing in the way that I wanted to grow and stepping into opportunities that I wanted to step into. And part of that was because I was working for a bank in 2008. In the middle of something called a financial crisis in a Great Recession. So I was kind of not in the best industry for that kind of stuff anyway. And so I decided to leave at the time to pursue growth in my development. So I remember going from this non technical company to a tech company injunction EOD and all of a sudden connecting with some of these things that I've talked about learning in my computer science education. I was like, oh, okay, that's where this really applies. And so I got to learn a lot of cool stuff. And to do some things that would set me up again for a success later on. I got to work with worked in a large company with thousands of employees..

"Brought to you by the ragu cook like a mother cookoff. A reality show that finally admits it's not real. Listen and subscribe everywhere you get podcasts. Michaela shifrin out of second race in a row after missing a gate in the slalom by Howard fendrich. Two time Olympic champion Michaela shifrin's second race at the Beijing games ended even more quickly than her first, a 26 year old American skidded out of control about 5 seconds into the opening run of the slalom Wednesday, and is out of the event. That was even less time than her trip down the course lasted in the first run of the giant slalom on Monday. This time, shifrin went over to the side of the hill, sat on the snow and bowed her head. Shifrin came to China as one of the biggest stars of her or any sport at the Winter Olympics, a dominant at times Alpine skier, who has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager. She has said she plans to enter all 5 individual races at the Yang ching Alpine skiing center, and one gold would make her the second female ski racer to win at least one at three consecutive games. So far though, shifrin is over two, unable even to complete a substantial portion of the first leg of either of her first two events, both the slalom and giant slalom are specialties of hers to run technical races that combine two times. It is not stunning that she hasn't won a medal, let alone a gold as shifrin herself so often reminds everyone, anything can happen on any given day. What is truly surprising is that she has been so off for games so immediately in each of her two trips along the course, known as the ice river. Shifrin's next race could be the super G on Friday. She never has competed in that event at an Olympics, but did win it at the 2019 world championships..

"Rate of change. Is there or is it somewhere in the middle whereas depending on the type of change you know some changes is better served in phases and some as just it's more of a strategic thought process in which you should continue to build upon. Yeah lots of about their. I mean i think you know so let me take a step back and just think about the word change itself so fundamentally i think change is good you know. A lot of people are afraid of change but changes very very good. What what i think about with your question is how do you deal with. Changes probably really important concepts in. So you know. I'm not i. I love the snowball analogy. Because i think it's probably something like that. It's not like a big event that you know every once in a while you'll see a big event come along in that forces change and that's you know those are the disruptions that everyone talks about However i i think the reality is that the change comes all the time you know you. Can you can have a change of viewpoint e you could have a change in direction there could be a change and influence or change. That comes along. That kinda intercepts a plan that you might have had been really comfortable with the the important piece about this. I really do believe is is thinking about change proactively. And that's why i'm a big fan of thinking about the future. Because one of the exercises that you can do is actually try to disrupt yourself and you know if you if you force change upon the situation it forces you to think a little bit more broadly about what those changes could be and how they influence a strategy or how they influence the direction or even a desire. So you know i. I hope this is answering the question a little bit. But it's it's very subtle topic. And one that i think needs a little bit of muscle memory to develop some some expertise in dealing with i agree..

"Maybe have an entire team that just there to think about the future and come up with innovation and then start ups that might be their entire business model they that's maybe why some serbs come and go so quickly you know. They've got an idea and they're riding on it and it could be home. Runner could be strikeout. What do you say to the rest of the companies. You know the ones that aren't so big that they have a dedicated team and the ones that are established enough that they're not just a concept Like for example let's say you owned citrus farm is can you. Can we apply the learnings. Are the takeaways from your best internship. Ever and apply them to companies outside of the big the big ones in the tiny startups. George got me on that one so for probably for the benefit of your audience You know i am the owner founder. Vay company called arbor delays as well. We're a small business in the sisters citrus industry so thus reference You know i I think that thinking to the future and you know exploration imagination and especially within technology in this day and age should be isolated to the big the big companies like this is. This is an opport- age. Almost an imperative for smaller companies as well to think about this and again a very pragmatic example is look at what happened this last year. Those companies that didn't have a digital presence were ones that really struggled when things started to lock down and so there was a mad scramble to just get a website launched or delivery services created. Or you know things that we could do in this environment for survival. And i think that you know not not to say that you could have predicted this. But having having this be part of a methodology that a company goes through Frequently not just once a year in in a retreat but frequently throughout the year to think about the future and explore big concepts and do a little bit of you know kinda crazy exploration of wild ideas is just paramount's because if you don't there are others who.

"But we knew that it was important and we knew that there were some really interesting things that we were probably going to find. And discover and talk about and explorer. You know the the couple of things that we did know that we series around of me number one part of the whole premise of why we did this and why we're helping customers really look towards the future. Is that the futures coming really fast man. Technique in technology has been on. This kind of roller coaster high-speed accelerated pace for a number of years in his only getting faster and so our clients are recognizing that and they are looking for us to help them look beyond the headlights to to the future. Farther out into the future to try in not be caught off guard into think broader in think bigger so so there was that element of that You know. I think. I think another another aspect of this was There's value in actually doing research in this space because we know that everything is changing. I mean if you look at any industry. I if last year was just the perfect example of this with covid cove comes along and changes a lot of what companies are how they're operating what they're even doing sometimes and we were starting to hear a number of things around this like it's not that cove it necessarily changed thought process but it definitely accelerated things and broughton towards the presence that were in the future so this process of looking after future with different perspectives. In trying to make sense of that or or try to analyze that or try to predict it is something that we thought was really interesting. I do love the fact that you're able to start this project in had the freedom to try something that you didn't actually have you didn't know exactly where it was supposed to land right. And have you been able to distill down effort into some kind of key takeaways. We have in well. We're still learning so first of all it's you know we. We have a ton of data. Now which is you know best. That's fun in itself just to see what we can do with the information data that we've collected already but some of the key takeaways or not necessarily like you know kinda clear breakthroughs. We're not we didn't stumble upon the next next iphone for example right but what what i found really interesting where some of the themes that we explored. Though how can you take a utopian lens and apply towards thinking of the future. How can you take a dystopia and len and apply that towards thinking about the future. What if an external force comes in as a disruptor to vision that you have an have. We seen examples of that in learn from those from the films that we watched you. Might you know one of my interns said something that i thought was really profound in this whole study He said that. Hollywood is really good at showing us the tension between events. Like there's there's something that happens in it's a great storyline. That's in a film but the tension around like say privacy versus You know just just availability of service. That's attention that we're dealing with today and finding out where the boundaries are of how you think about that is really important discussion. One that companies are dealing with today if nothing else that's also a skill that we're learning a little bit from the movie industry about in how to help customers of ours work through those tensions. Yeah i think. I mean you. You obviously said that there were on a a roller coaster effect happening. But with i think kobe and the last twelve months there's been an acceleration especially with technology component when it relates to kind of the concept of imagining the future. Where are.

"All the way to the modern blockbusters and we and everything everything from the technologies that we saw to the feeling that we had the context around it and we just treat it as a big research project. Yeah there's a housing fund there. I mean first of all yes obviously to have a job where you can sit and watch movies is just seems like a dream that as thinking a lot about this since last time we talked and it's very it seems obvious when you set it up that way. I mean we're in the commercial interiors industry and creating a creating physical. Space can be sizable investment. So one of the things. Our design team is very capable of doing is using technology to help visualize space that doesn't yet exist so they can get a feel for what that future state might look like and they can make changes based off of that that visualization. and so. You're doing some tammy hollywood. Obviously they spend a lot of money and a lot of time and a lot of resources and they do it very well. So you're taking this this great abundance of films that already are out there. And you're basically saying let's analyze these because that's the other piece is the scientific part the data and that's what i'm fascinated about is like when you get into the quit the coolness of watching films as an internship aside were you guys trying to what was the kind of the end goal was just to say we saw twenty examples of teleportation. Or what what were you going to try to do. With that data once it was collected. Yeah it's it's a great question and one that we really didn't have a great answer for when started out. Which is which is why. I kinda when i when i say. I'm really just so thankful that. I worked for a place that really values exploration at the core. Just pure generation you. We weren't sure what we were looking for..

"In strategy technology and transformation in very many industries in on managing director within our global strategy team. Today and that's been amazing over the last years. Because i just have a real passion in helping my customers explore. What's out there in the world in help them create that vision which in plan for how to realize their futures and so a lot of it is very creative. A lot of it is really trying to understand the worlds of today tomorrow and try and bring them to life. so that's that's version. That's great setup for what we're here to talk about and it's him excited for this one because we tell a number of stories on this show but this one's i think very very cool the best internship ever. I want to hear about this project that you recently did. And and what we've what we can learn from it. Why don't you tell me set the stage a little bit. You're at slalom you. You're you're dealing with things like technology and transformation strategy. What is the. What was the best internship ever project. Yeah so first of all before you even kind of get into details. I just i this is. This is a theme out. We'll come back to. I'm sure later. On when we talk. But i just have to give a huge kudos to slalom in general Especially our ceo. brad jackson. Because i think that one of the most important things that a company can do is just explore and look for opportunities to just go out there and and find creative ways of things that you don't have good answers for works so in in some of the work that we do like i mentioned i have a passion for you know thinking about the future and helping customers to do the same and so i've been working with a number of customers to do just that at pretty exciting levels and we've been painting of viewpoints of what the world of twenty thirty and beyond is going to look like and doing it in a crate of way with our customers and so I found myself one day in our. Ceo brad's office. Giving him a debrief about what. We're doing with customers because we found it pretty exciting. I know he would find too and we were reviewing some of the materials that that That we were working with our customers on a slide in there which was a kind of a safe harbor tenth slide. It's it's the it's the kind of the slide that you really kinda us to get out of jail free card on on these types of conversations in saying hey you were about to go and try and predict the future and that's really really hard and so basically don't sue me if i get it completely wrong but on this slide. I actually had some pictures of some of my favorite science fiction movie themes and you know by the way. I'm a huge science fiction fan. So i had a picture of captain kirk with a with a communicator. I had a picture from two thousand one. Space odyssey something from blade runner around advertising and the whole point of that slide was actually to convey the message that predicting the future is really hard but there is a group that does it very very well and that's hollywood. The film industry has actually been predicting the future in bringing it to life onscreen for us for decades..

This was serious business, no laughing smiling or crying with his two time Olympic gold. Medalist father holding on seventeen month old Jackson giddy took his first track down the slope few months ago, the look pure determination. It's a look Ted. Liberty knows all too. Well, he's that determined to return to the top for years lady has been plagued by knee and bag issues now healthier than he has been in a while league. These attempting to rediscover the giant slalom form that allowed him to win an Olympic gold medal. Two thousand fourteen Sochi games earned five World Cup titles and the discipline and challenge Austrian Marcel hersher, I don't know if I'm the Ted of two thousand twelve which was pretty fast said lady who plans to compete in the super g and g s this weekend in beaver. His last World Cup victory was Tober twenty fifth two thousand fifteen in Austria before he frayed the cartilage in his hip, tore the AC L and his right knee and strained his back to the point where the thirty four year olds from Park City, Utah needed season ending surgery in January two thousand seventeen to fix herniated discs. There was promised last season with the third place showing in Germany just before the young chain games in February his GS titled defense at the Olympics didn't go it's planned as he finished tied for fifteenth place in a race won. He did take fifth during the combined also on by hersher as an experience legally describes Pyong Chang as fun with his wife Mia Jackson, his family attendance as a racer not so much. I was there to compete and go for medals and came up a little short in the combined and vastly underperformed in the giant slalom. These days he's all about family time, his wife and son travel with him as often as possible league gave his son his first taste of skiing at a New Zealand venue in August. I definitely want him to be a skier. Do I want him to be a ski racer if he wants to it's not something I would ever push on him. Liberty said a big part of my life is skiing. I want him to ski race at least when he's younger. So he has that base. But I wouldn't push 'em beyond just going out there and having fun with his friends. There was a time when his rivals used to refer to him as Mr. g s for his dominance in the event. Liberty had a stretch and time in which he won three straight world championship GS titles and another during the two thousand thirteen season when he won six of eight races in the event. But injuries took a toll on him. He tore his ACL during a training mishap in Germany in January two thousand sixteen his. His back and hip have also hindered him this past summer, though. He went through something he hasn't in quite a while a customary prep period for once. He wasn't rehabbing an injury. He actually got to train high volume to lead. He said, I'm feeling pretty good. Good enough to challenge hersher who has won seven straight World Cup overall titles to be able to compete with him is definitely a tall task liberty said, but I really don't think I'd be out here. If I didn't think I could get back to that point. Pat Graham is an Associated Press Writer.
