"We just watch a random. Tv show sometimes. The villain is actually introduced before the hero. If you watch star wars new hope came out in seventy eight. Is that right. Nineteen seventy eight ish. Eighty one of the the first seen in episode four star wars in new hope is not luke skywalker. It's actually the massive seventy-seven. Hey i'm not that off. Thank you keeping all these years. Actually straight is harder than the looks. But seventy seven where george. Lucas made the decision that the first thing he wanted to show on screen was not luke. Skywalker was not obi-wan-kenobi was framing evil. The first thing you see on screen is actually a sift. Battleship destroyer takes up your entire screen. He frames evil right out of the gate. One of the reasons. Why star wars harry potter and lord of the rings are so popular. They all they all tell the exact same story. Tell it differently. Someone who doesn't have parents raised by their uncle gets a strange fight's good and evil understands that they have to find either either lord lord voldemort or they have to fight darth vader and eventually they realize the true fight is within themselves but every story that we tell must have a villain with a chinese corona virus the virus go back and forth between the two who is the villain who is the man that pushed forward the lies and the deception about the origins of this virus. Who is the man. That is the darth vader the voldemort. Who is the man. That is the evil dr the mad scientist or we have a name and we've covered him for quite some time here on this program but he should be a household name. He's done everything he possibly can to try to make himself seem unimportant in unknown to you. He is one of the reasons. Why if you are facing a termination because you're vaccination status. This guy is behind it. He's one of the reasons why we mass mail and voting. He's friends with ouchi. He's friends with gates is the go-between of the entire alliance. Literally of what we are looking for. This man is named peter becic. He's a british zoologist. Let me stop here if you go and you look at kind of wear a lot of these press releases come from and a lot of the people behind kind of when the cia gets involved in dealing with foreign intelligence. The cia has something with zoologists. I don't quite understand it. I don't i don't know why this is that one field of study. It seems there is more agency overlap with zoology than anything else. Maybe we can have some people that have worked in the agency on this program and tell us why back in february of two thousand twenty and we know this because of the declassified vouch emails the medical industrial complex with ouchi and you clause and the entire machine that is the cdc the nih the fda they were scrambling and freaking out when they realized that this mysterious flu and pneumonia coming out of china very well might be tied to gain of function research. That was here in america but there was one man that they all leaned upon someone that was not on. Us government payroll someone that had an extraordinary amount of power someone that knew all the heads of state and knew the people that were in charge of the public health divisions and this man peter dacix was the man who got intimately involved in orchestrating and concocting scheme that the lancet journal of medicine just called the lancet in february of two thousand twenty which quote attacked conspiracy theories suggesting that the virus does not have a natural origin. Peter desk got all involve he flooded the zone. Full court pep pressed mass propaganda campaign. Now why was that important. Everybody why was it important. In february of two thousand twenty to make you seem feel as if this thing just came out of nature. Because peter dass and fau cheesy and stop gottlieb and pfizer and madonna. They all didn't want you to blame. Who was actually responsible. This was a cover for the chinese communist party. Especially in an election year when donald trump would've been able to use this in frame this as an act of war against america and he might have actually seen an approval rating increase the lancet they published this using all their credibility and concocted by peter desk through this statement which changed the american news cycle. And we've been saying it came from a lab since day one so many people including republicans fell for this. This is one of the most important stories in the world. not gonna find this cable. Tv do you know what big tech and big government have in common. They both want to silence. Any dissenting voices into submission. Let's say you're proud gun owner and wanna talk on social media about the right to bear arms. Well chances are you're postal flag by a constant moderator and you might end up on some government watch lists the fight back against having your voice censored by both big tech and big government. I recommend express. Vpn you see. The problem with big tech is not only do they censor you but they also track what you do online..
How the Wokeness Is Killing the Simple Joy of Sports
"I caught up on this, Uh 30 for 30, ESPN special at the 1986 Mets, the World Series team. Jim is a big Mets fan producer, Jim and he had told me this is such a great show. You got to watch it. So I sat down for four hours. I couldn't turn away the 1986 Mets, and it reminds me I was a Yankees fan, not a Mets fan, but I was very happy to Mets won the 1986 World Series. I was a kid and I was I was 12. I mean, you know, I'm not thinking about solving the world's problems at 12 years old. But I was happy for them. My mom was a Mets fan and that stunning World Series victory, of course with the Bill Buckner era and it's a real shame, because you know, Bill Buckner is such a great player and became You know, it's infamous for that one plane he shouldn't have. He was such a great player throughout his career. I mean, it was just right. Jim Buckner was a great hitter. I mean, if phenomenal player and it's really a shame that a lot of people just associated with that one moment But I watched that upset victory. The Mets come back in the ninth, and I remember just losing my mind being so happy for my mom and she was screaming, jumping up and down and this guy Phil's house we were at it was a friend of Of hers at the time. But Comey thinking How mad I am now. I don't mean like man at the world are mad at you. I mean mad at what the sports world. Dead. I had such special memories and I was a kid sports. I did I, uh, you know those moments. You you all know. I mean, if your guys ladies out there you were at a game with your dad or your mom or whatever, and home run gets hit in the beard gets thrown in the air and everything like that. People throw and popcorn, peanuts, crackerjacks all over the place. Whatever. Everybody's just going nuts together something about the collective energy of the crowd. Sports brings us that. It's a form of entertainment. You don't see that the movie theater, right? I mean, very rarely in a movie theater. You know, you're not watching, like return to the Jedi, where Luke Skywalker throws Darth Vader over the thing, and everybody gets up in cheers. That just doesn't happen. But it happens in sports, right and those moments I missed them. I've been, uh, stranger to sports for the last few years because of the Wokeness and I just don't want to. It's just not my thing. I just can't take it and I'm really mad. Like many of you are There's a special moments to me. I remember every second of that 1986 Mets World Series. I remember there was sitting at the end of the couch on the right side. And this guy Phil's house watching that And that feeling of elation and joy. Why'd you have to take that from us?

"It was so we spent like the normal six-week rehearsal process getting the first three hours ready and we opened that and then the player was struggling. With the second part he was supposed to deliver on opening night so we could start rehearsing opening night of the first three hours. Deliver the second three hours and we start rehearsal at the same time and he didn't and We had about a. I think we had about a week and a half to two weeks to rehearse the second part before we put it up and and that was stressful and i was playing the lead and i was just basically on stage the whole time. Six hours of lines. Yeah yeah and and people would cycle in and out and and a member kind of freaking out and then we go to open the second half and we have no you know and and all of the the the the lighting cues get dumped out of the computer and we have all of the critics off because the first half was kind of a hit and everybody was really excited about the play. And all of the major papers. The tribune was there. All of the big people. Sometimes was there waiting and We don't have any lights and the thing. Is that all of the visuals for the play. Were all lighting because we're changing From france to england we go here and there. And you can't change outset so it's all different lighting and very complex lighting and it's all gone and the director comes backstage and he's like well we're just going to bring up the house lights so they can see your face. Let's let's go guys. We gotta go. We did like that and we did it. And we got a huge standing ovation. And i realized if you have a good script and you have actors who knew what to do with it you can create a product and you can see there is and there's just enough light to see them. You can create a product. That's that's worth money In theater you that's great. That was that was pretty good. That's the highlight this interesting jason. Be what are your thoughts on technology advancements that allow actors to not only reprise their roles with their youth restored if they wished but can actually allow stars to be in films and shows after their death. How do you feel about that well. For like carrie. Fisher or like we were talking about making you look younger a spike. He prefer. I don't think we're there yet. I don't think. I have not yet seen a credible instance of this happening legless in lord. The rings didn't well. How about the tarantino film. He looked younger. And you know what Yeah yeah him to capri all right. Yeah younger definitely One did work and during proving proving. Also irishman was the big one. Oh you know what though that kind of bothered me. Carrie fisher. i didn't buy. I didn't even by the new luke skywalker. Even though i wanted to my mandal oriented. Yeah i gave in. That's that's exactly what i was. I was so invested in that moment. That that i was like i don't care i'm there anyway. If i'm really honest about technology as impressive as it was just not quite to the point where i am not. I'm just. I don't know i don't have to cross any gulf to to to ban so but we're gonna get there as what's your favorite show on tv right now. What are the shows that you're watching.
Governor Ron DeSantis Conserves Conservatism
"I like that. I like your style. I like your style. Jim. We gotta book at at Les lightsaber in the front and back. Of Iran Kenobi. Run the Skywalker. Round to detail. Now there's a little debate I had with the not really a debate, but I was charged with the W F T. L Radio Great radio host this morning on the morning show when a live interview There's a debate would rob about Rhonda Sanderson, Florida Like what if we lose Ron and he runs for president? I don't know. Listen, I don't know. I like obviously, President Trump would probably clear the field in 2024. But they said, Well, do we lose him? And I said, Listen, I wouldn't look at it that way. I mean, think about it is wrong to Santa's more valuable to the citizens of Florida Specifically, if Rhonda Santos is the Florida governor or the president, United States I don't know. I honestly can't tell you that and I can tell you this. The bench in Florida a strong We got an up and coming representative on the West Coast Whole Collier County area over there. Byron Donald's You may have seen my Fox news whose spectacular But as long as Rhonda Santa's keeps conserving conservatism and doing things that conserve conservatism He will highlight him and others on this show with Rhonda Santas. Strikes again.

"Seeing that blockade runner and the star destroyer. I didn't know the names of the ship. They didn't know the didn't need to write with that. Opening of that film is not gonna keep repeating that that is iconic but it did it it. It changed everything like it did. It changed everything and it is something that is continuing. Now i'm thinking of the space balls version of the parody times. But i remember that moment as clear as day and then you know we had a we might have had a bootleg copy that that we would watch at home and honor on a grainy vcr after hundreds of times with my brother and that opening scene that introduction at appearance of the person that we would come to know as darth vader stock in my mind. And i think those few minutes that those first few minutes of the opening scene of new hope are some of the most impactful an important movie milestone moments in cinematic history period. Fight me no it it it. It's it's it's i think it's to go back to to like the idea that we want to go To the thing about star wars have maybe separates us from other franchises Would y galaxies edges so point important. Because you want you wanted to go there like everyone's like i want to experience that i mean there've been other movies that take place in space right including star trek including two thousand one a space odyssey but to there was something different about star wars and i think those opening scenes and the characters you got introduced to in that first movie and sort of the things that you saw. It was such a stark visual. I hear people tell me all the time and i experienced it as well as like seeing those droids walk in the desert. All in that opening part of the very first movie was just like i. I wanna go there. I want to experience that. I wanna see i. That's a universe that i feel like really exist and i think that set the tone in those first few shots and you were just so enthralled without a lot of dialogue being spoken at all And that's that's that's really what set the tone so that is a is definitely not on my list but it definitely would be on on any other list. I would definitely put that on there. It crossed my mind. It should be one two three four five six seven eight nine and ten because that that's where our minds were blown and how many countless filmmakers have said that that moment change inspire them. That was the lightning rod for countless generations of people who fell lois his franchise with myth with storytelling with george joseph cambell. It changed everything. It changed everything for me. I didn't know moves could be like that. And and like you lou. When i think about star wars especially as a young man i i remember fondly wonderful moments and memories of my family when i was growing up. We didn't have a lot of my parents that have been ended up getting divorced. But the moment was star. Wars legitimately and i mean the any hyperbole where some of the finest moments when the four of us were a unit a collective and just like the found family and a new hope. That was something that stuck with me and still does the state. Which is while i pass it on to my kids like we all do and you and you both pass it on to the people that you know. Read what you write and hear what you say on your shows and it goes to how impactful that moment was because it it has this thing. Credibly long-tailed domino effect years years decades and generations later. So my my next one on the list is one that actually comes from the least grossing box office star wars movie and the least critically rated stars movie yet got the lowest ratings by critics and it was actually the lowest box office not even close and that is from the two thousand eight clone wars movie. And it's not necessarily. Because of the moment like i the movie for those of you who don't know were just four episodes thrown together because george. Let's put this on. A big screen wasn't actually designed to be a movie. And if you've never seen the clone wars movie i will give you a little short cliff notes. Version basically job at the hut son stinky gets taken By an and asaka to get delivered back to job. That's that's that's so again stinky. I'll just Allow you to to really name. And i mean i'm trying you know if you're trying to piece together. Why would it stars movie. Be that low critically rated in that low box office because the the plot of the movie was stinky to get reunited with his dad. Job so But i will say there was a moment in that movie The two thousand eight climbers movie that has honestly in a way helped define story decisions that are still being made in the star wars university this day and it was the moment that a soka tano came down the ship and we were introduced to anikin. Skywalker is apprentice. And it didn't make sense at the time. How could anna can in between these. Two movies have an apprentice. Where is this character in. Revenge of the seth You know a lot of people did not like this character. They called her annoying. Who is this and yet. There is an entire series that is about to start filming and will come out in the next year or two titled soka and they're she's getting her entire live action series. That decision That the idea that a socha was character that nobody liked it. First and now is one of the most popular characters. In the entire franchise. The actress who brought a soak into life. Ashley eckstein helped define a lot of phantom for girls and women with her clothing line universe and really gave a voice to a lot of people who felt like they didn't have a voice and she inspired still inspires to this day tons of and girls as she goes out to different places and at the same time. socha was a main storyline and manda laurean season two. She's actually the one that told us what baby owed. His name was grow and also on top of that. A lot of story decisions between rogue one and the new series the bad batch and the mandatory with characters like tan and other storylines. There have all come out of lucasfilm animation and that was the first time we really got to see lucasfilm animation department with the clone wars movie in two thousand eight and that character coming down the ship in two thousand eight asaka versus the soka that we see in the way that people view her You know what is this. Thirteen years later Is just it was a monumental moment We didn't know that at the time but it still is having its effect felt to this day and for probably many decades to come including it. That movie was Was that the headman for that. Movie was day baloney who is now doing interviews on good morning america. And you hear people like carl weathers talking. About how big of an impact. Dave looney is made on his career And and john fabra everywhere he goes. It's like it's like a package deal. It's jon favreau and baloney and all of that sprung out from the least viewed least box office grossing and lease critically acclaimed star. wars film. The movie in that character in particular Ah soka tunnel has defined fandom for thousands upon thousands of people including people naming their kids. Asaka i have met at star celebration. Many many people come up and they'd say oh. Yeah this is my daughter asuka and it's just all came down from that moment of soka coming down the ship so one we were still feeling the effects in it so modern. Maybe doesn't seem right but that two thousand eight climbers movie is still impacting. The decisions at disney makes now and lucasfilm on stories.
Behind the Desk: The Story of Late Night
"Began because jenny was writing monologue jokes and she noticed that there were jokes that she loved that. Seth just could never say out loud. That voice belongs to the very talented amber ruffin. Before becoming a host herself of the amber ruffin show on the streaming service peacock amber was a writer and performer. On seth meyer's late night show on nbc amber and her pow. Jenny hegel another seth writer brin the shows writers room one day just kind of riffing on the fact that as a black writer amber and a gay writer jenny. They naturally thought of jokes. That were decidedly the frame of reference for seth who is neither black nor gay and also guy the new movie star wars the rise of skywalker features a lesbian kiss and for most women sodas college. We didn't think it was going to be anything. We just thought it would make us laugh. Seth like this is great will do it on the show. We do not show great and we were like okay. Well we did it and then they were like. When are we going to do the next one. Is you got to be kidding. Me on its survived. It was a jenny's idea because she didn't like the number of perfect less in jokes that we're going in the garbage. There is no area off camera more important to every late night television show. Then the writer's room let me take you inside for a tour throughout the long history of the the typical late night writer's room would resemble a corporate conference room after the visigoths got through with it a conference table and chairs yes but also piles of debris rolled up paper balls of failed jokes empty pizza boxes half eaten doughnuts allison silverman who has written for legends jon stewart. Stephen colbert got her first exposure in the late night room for another legend conan. O'brien more. Like what

"And i wouldn't change anything movie and character movie and character will like you jar binks because thank you actually do like charter. But lose gonna slam sort is going to get it out of the way now. Now it's the empire strikes back But the empire strikes back in a new hope is sort of like one in one a to be honest. The last jedi is probably the best made of any stores we but the price strikes back and star wars for sure. And it's totally darth vader. Because as an english teacher by day. I finance skywalker to be the most shakespearean the most complex The most fascinating to break down to analyze. I've actually used anna skywalker to teach hamlet. And i just think he's fantastic character. I was gonna say half-jokingly. But i don't listen what i make jokes. I don't want people to get mad because they're just jokes kidding around. You know which actor d prefer hayden who attacked which actor has a wider dynamic range of emotion. Jake lloyd or hayden christians in but again not going down that road at all for me. And i think i've said this before a new hope i'm not saying it. It's better than empire one better but for me new hope like is my star wars and it's the and i love origin. Stories had love the the dirt and the grittiness about that that film and even just sort of how it was made and like you. I'm i'm an obi-wan-kenobi fan through and through so Before we get into the into the list. I will tell you. I think you know this is an interesting list of try and put together of how difficult is it for you. Who are such deep fans to try in not only come up with these moments but then to sort of rank them because what i was finding was i sort of had this brain dump which is what i normally do. And i'm like wow and a lot more things on my list than i thought and then trying to limit it to ten ish knowing that there's going to be. Overlap was even more difficult. Because i got to the well. How do i leave this out right. How do i possibly leave this moment out. And what i think we would do is go around the horn and then at the end we'll sort of try and agree upon a list of maybe the three in whatever order we decide if we can agree upon not to three of the most iconic the most important the most memorable star wars moments and again. I want to acknowledge that. While i do not my phantom does not go as deep into even all the things that are on the small screen. Certainly not the books and things like that. You're welcome to include anything on the list that you feel is appropriate. Because i will tell you that there's a couple of mine that are a little bit outside the four corners to a certain degree so Because you are my guests. And because i am so wildly curious Sort of keep the same order. Ryan and dan and then i'll go and sort of go round robin so Ryan you can. Do you know what you think is is number ten on your list and work your way down to one or start with the one that you don't want dan steele i've got a. I've got a few that i know. At least you will not steal. So we'll we'll save those for later But i was thinking about this topic. And it's it's it's got me thinking because you know there was really no criteria for the top ten. So i was thinking do i think of all the moments in universe that i think fans will will recognize as these things happen in universe in a movie on. Tv show that we all kind of understand. This is such a big moment. And why i think we sometimes points to moments like the chewy. Were home moment in. The force awakens when they when chilean honda back on there that i think that's a moment we all stand and cheer and if i stole somebody. Sorry i've just copying luo you just throw seven and when one But thinking about what happens in real life right now not met not in universe events that have happened since nineteen seventy seven or before nineteen seventy seven that kind of have helped define the star wars saga. And i think we might get into some of those But i did want to start. This is one that i think this is actually in universe. This is a moment in a film that i think to me ranks as number one in and all the films all You know eleven films. Television shows everything books. You name it. This moment is the number one moment in any star wars film for me so in in meta universe for this one for me Is the moment where. Luke throws his lightsaber in return of the jedi. So we all know the big epic finale return of the jedi george. Lucas is one of his best. Things he does is finales of movies Like he ends his movies very well. It's always the death star trench or empire strikes back that that that Just powerful ending of them staring out in space and then return of the jedi to me as the best ending in all star wars. And you have this this moment. Leading up where luke has helped redeem his father. He's brought anikin skywalker. Back your face down with the emperor. What's going to happen. Everything seems to be coming to a close and luke starts to have his anger overtake him. He chops his his father's hand off and he looks at his mechanical hand. The emperor's like well no matter what happens here. I've either got luc on my side now or vader survives. I've got better the emperor has one. He thinks he's one. Luke turns he looks up throws his lightsaber. Says you failed your highness. I am jet. I like my father before me that to me. If you ask somebody says what is what is star. What is the true meaning of star wars. What is the lesson. We take from star wars. I would point to that moment. The moment that luke throws his lightsaber doesn't care what happens to him next. And says you failed your highness. And he tells them that majete like my father before me and then of course the emperor says then you will die in shock. Somebody lazy lands on the ground. But that also leads to vader picking him up throwing them down the shaft in that to me is my favorite star wars moment it's number one All of star wars is the moment luke. Luke cities mechanical hand realizes what he's what he's becoming throws a lightsaber and that to me defines in in one two three scenes however many scenes. You wanna consider that that defines what star wars really means the purpose of star wars to me. Wow so i say well because it wasn't on my list. I didn't even. It didn't make the cut for me. Which is which is what i love about. Having all of us together is that everybody's list is going to be a little bit different Dan was an on your list. Your a.
Should The Simpsons Cast Be Replaced With AI Voice "Actors"?
"With most of the actors who voiced characters on the simpsons well into retirement age and the show seemingly having no intention of ever stopping a meeting. Cut wallover at wired. Uk wondered. could the actors all be replaced with a i rep locations. It makes a bit of sense off the bat. Near the proliferation of deepfakes circulating online aside major movie franchises have increasingly been patching together old footage of actors who have passed away like carrie fisher and the rise of skywalker and paul walker and furious. Seven or even just to fabricate a younger version of an actor who coincidentally had an entire body of work from their teenage years to use as reference points like robert. Downey junior in captain. America's civil war and will smith in jimmy man and with the simpsons. You only have to create the voice shortly. that's far easier especially with over three decades of content to pull from wired turn to tim. Mixed smithers canada-based. Ai researcher and media producer. Who builds a speech model that can be trained to mimic anyone's voice and notably has already recreated homer simpson for a few youtube videos including one where homer stands in for julia roberts in notting hill. Here's how he does it. Quoting wired mic smithers built generic. Ai model that can turn any text into audio speech in english when he wants to make a new voice he tunes the model further with two or three hours of new data of that particular person. Speaking along with a text transcript it focuses in on what makes a homer voice a homer voice and the different frequencies. He says after that it's a matter of asking the model to generate multiple takes. Each one will vary slightly and choosing the best one for your purposes and quotes bonnets. The performance is pretty flat as wired. Says it's quote as if he's reading out something that he doesn't really understand the meaning of and quotes which is pretty apt for homer still in the hut the performance. The show would probably be looking for there are other startups around. The world. Likes an antic in the uk and replica studios in australia. That are working to add. Some of that emotional resonance to a voice is using actual actors to help train them performing different lines over and over again with different emotional tones. Technically if you had someone recite all the existing phonemes in the english language or redescendu since that contained them all you should be able to then piece together any possible words. He wants but in reality. People's accents emotions can change things just slightly enough to make the process exceptionally challenging. Although absolutely doable and the time it takes to train the ai decreases over time with more data. Both semantic and replica studios who work primarily with video games where. There's a lot of intriguing possibilities with things like getting a character to say the player's name or whatever. The player wants them to or having a i basically work as a stand in until a real actor comes on board both of those companies say the actors they work with get paid anytime their voices are used in a game and this is a key element for me. Not just what rights doesn't actor have if they're only ever used to train in ai and not perform roll themselves so to speak but taking this back to the simpsons what rights do actors have whose voices are recreated to be their characters the screen actors guild affords actors certain bargaining rights over the use of their likeness. Which does explicitly extend to a performer's voice and while his protection is being rapidly expanded and reexamined as technology evolves you can impart think crispin glover for its origins after crispin glover declined to revive his role as george mic. Fly in back to the future. Part two they technically recast him. But they saddled the new actor. Geoffrey wiseman with prosthetics and employed classic stage tricks like having him upside down or wearing sunglasses to obscure his features as well as the use of some footage of glover himself from the first movie. Unless you were well aware that glover hadn't returned for the sequel. You probably wouldn't have had any idea that the george mcphee racine was any different from the first movie so glover sued the producers for using his likeness without his permission and for not paying him for the use of the footage. He shot for the first movie. But the legality of all of this now banned far beyond simply using a performance likeness and in many cases. Who is allowed to do what isn't so clear. There's copyright law which could give authority to the studio or whoever owns the rights but that counteracts with the right to publicity basically crispin glover thing and that's especially tenuous with cast as well known as the ones from the simpsons. You know a lot of people know these actors and if in a i replicated homer were out there. Advertising for some product people might assume dan castellaneta who voices homer is endorsing the product even if he had nothing to do with it so it's a tricky path to tread and personally. I'm a bit wary about the idea of ai. Replacing actors were any type of artists. Mean that's not to say that i don't want. Ai involved in arts. I think various tech can produce really rad art. I just don't think it can replace human-made arts and especially with something like the simpsons you know on the one hand. It's been on so long that it's the perfect fodder for ai. Replicated voices because then it could live on beyond the actors. And i guess honor them in some way but on the other hand. It's been so long that there are countless voice actors out there who can nail the characters voices perfectly and probably with more emotion.

That boba fett wasn't around for luke's cameo considering that bobo once hunted down and tried to kill luke in his friends that would have made for an awkward reunion. The Mandalorian season 2 recap
"As it connected to those things those broader things in the galaxy And and i really liked seeing how it played out and anything that gives me more luke skywalker at his height at the height of his powers is really fascinating to me. Especially when they've treated it with this this nuance between light and dark. This really interesting place. That luke occupies. I think i wasn't expecting to have something meaningful senate about luke skywalker on the mandalorian. But here we are and I'm i'm really excited about that. I can't wait to see the special on christmas. The disney gallery one hour behind the scenes movie. So yeah when this time. It's only one episode right last time it was like eight episodes wonder if this a function of the pandemic i actually what i wonder. Is that if it's because they've covered so much of how the show is made that there's not really too much more for to delve into since the second season would be just more of the same in that department like able to fit a lot of that stuff now into the since they have the world established and so they'll still talk to some of the film and stuff like that but i i wonder if they're just not as much to cover with the exception of talking about bringing these quote unquote new characters into
A Star Wars and Marvel bonanza
"The price hike. It seemed inevitable. I mean it's still cheaper than netflix and considerably cheaper than hvl. Max i would say if people ask me whether or not get disney plus i tend to say like star wars and marvel. Do you have kids at which point. It's definitely word this the sheer volume of content. I'd say it's ok. Okay no for sure. I mean for me. I've got i've got kids. So disney plaza lock. I think anyone who's got a family. This is this is our ramaz. Get a among the many different streaming options that we have nowadays Let's get into the shows. I know star wars near and dear to your heart. So let's let's go there first. They announced or talked about ten shows. Let's let's break out. What are some of the new shows that you're excited for low because of out vehicle order Talk about soka. I dawson brought the character life in live action for the first time in season. Two of the mandalorian and that that's a lot like a backdoor pilot for this show. It's just like suggested that she had her own adventures. going on. this was not a surprise. It is a delight though. It is an interesting we. I think we talked about this earlier. The you know the fact that not to get too deep spoiler as they chee. She was offered a role to mentor. Baby yoda no. You really need to go somewhere else. They felt like definitely had that back door pilot vibe to because like i'm sorry i'm off to other adventures. I've got my own thing. Got to deal with and allow that did seem like a setup for its own show. I'm actually late my own. Tv show salena catch trade this game and it gave a pretty clear idea of what she was up to not to get into splutters between between that and the rebels finale. From a few years ago we have a good idea what her objectives are for this show. Yeah we don't wanna get too deep into spoilers. Maybe we'll we'll devote a whole episode of that later on this year to speculate on what what that might be both water. Somebody other shows that that were announced. It was the next big one we knew this was coming for a long time but they talked about a little with last night and give us a sense that or confirmed that it was filming next march And that christian hated christiansen was returning as dark later. Very very exciting news. That one definitely took me by surprise. tactic territory hidden christmas activator. That's that's interesting. As opposed to advocate skywalker. Which would suggest that he appeared in flashbacks as anikin. But saying he's vader would suggest maybe that he'll appear in four seasons or something that is unclear. It's definitely it's intriguing. Another property was with a character. That's near to many star. Wars fans hearts landau gets his own show yet. These were ten on the ground because we don't know if it's going to be live action or a cgi animated series. I feel like donald glover should be involved. Because he was so well received solo so fingers crossed that he will be returning and then there are a long list of other ones kind of run through them really quickly because we unfortunately only have so much time on this podcast okay so there was the ropes quadrant movie directed by patty jenkins of wonder woman fang which is really exciting. That's super cool. That'd be a fighter pilots. There's the bat batch which will be a follow up to the clone wars at those cartridge orig- use there. There's adore which is about caffeine door from roquan. There's tyco tgi movie which we still don't know what that's about our coop concert raiders of the republic. Which is set around the time. Line of the mandalorian and could be about current june because she became a marshal of the new republic but again that remains unclear star wars visions which is automated shorts from abbey craters. That's really cool quite different the acolytes which obviously is that almost excited with the malls because that is set in the era of the high republic which is two hundred years before the phantom menace. And it's like about some sort of a dark site warrior and it could reveal stuff about the Era some different cool. So those a lot. I know being a super star wars fan. I want to get your opinion on this. Is this too much star wars. It certainly was too much reward announcement. I think parceled out over several years. It should be okay especially since the movies will be quite so frequent. Like i remember when it was only like six months between the last year and solo that felt overwhelming with tv. It's a little different as so you can kind of watch out. I'm at home in a more relaxed environment. it's a lot of star wars. There's no escaping that. Yeah yeah yeah i mean. Brian made a good point before we start recording that you know a lot of these might be one off shows ryden. Obi wan will probably be a one-off sled that that kind of makes sense that they'd wanna have this pipeline but it was a lot to digest all in really what was about thirty minutes a thirty minute presentation just for the star wars section. They're just kept pumping out one announcement after another rapid fire a lot but also i think that's partly a function of the fact that they're no conventions this year star wars celebration was
Apocalyptic Battle for Take-Out Dollars: Uber Eats Pits Star Wars against Star Trek
"A. From wondering David Brown and this is business wars daily on this Wednesday September thirtieth. It's hardly a stretch to say that the pandemic has been delivery services, best friend, take-out meals, or so much more attractive when we're avoiding other people that's meant a surge in revenue for leaders and Hungary rivals Uber Eats and door dash in the second quarter ubereats. Gross delivery bookings totaled almost seven billion dollars a jump of well over one hundred percent from q one. Before we all started eating in as a privately held company door dashes keeping a lot of data to itself but the number of people using dash doubled from ten million last year to twenty million now according to research firm Emarketer. Possibly, to Ubereats Chagrin Jordache became so ubiquitous that it was responsible for more than half of all US meal delivery in April. Wow. That's according to market researcher. Edison Trans last week linked in named DOOR DASH number two on its list of top fifty startups based in part on exuberant hiring plans. The companies expected to go public by the end of the year Uber eats holds about thirty percent of US market share despite their rapid growth neither door dash nor ubereats has yet turned a profit chew on. Then these rivals are employing ever more creative marketing strategies in their efforts to. Become or remain top takeout dog ubereats constructed a quirky ad campaign that celebrates competition itself a sort of Meta Mezei the latest ads featuring unusual rivalry between get this star wars and star Trek. They star none other than Mark Hamill Luke skywalker in star wars and Sir. Patrick Stewart's Star Trek's Captain John Luc Picard they compete ferociously almost grimly in games of air hockey and connect for. But when an uber driver delivers a delectable dish, each breaks the foreboding mood to politely thanked the driver in this Ad. Stewart. Armed with Cricket Bat and Hamill carrying a baseball bat in a dark empty warehouse. Tonight. I'll be eating a Veggie cheeseburger. On Shibata. No tomatoes. Tonight I'll be eating four cheese. Tortellini. With extra tomorrow. Tony. Stewart so it's come to the. Thank you. Proper. Part of what makes the spot? So amusing is that the argument tomato tomato is, of course from the classic George Gershwin. Song, let's call the whole thing off. But of course, neither UBER EATS NOR DOOR DASH is planning to call the whole thing off quite the opposite if takeout became essential in March, it's remaining. So in could see even more growth this winter, a second wave of the virus causes more lockdowns. In Uber Eats case, the company says the campaign celebrating rivalries already been a huge success in Australia Taiwan Japan, where it launched last year and ad featuring Kim Kardashian and a fictional Australian character pushed uber eats brand awareness in Australia two levels quote on par with McDonnell's the company told Ad Week the new Stewart Hamill Lads bring the campaign to the US in Canada but whether the cleverness of ubereats his ad campaign can steal away
The Great Lego Scam
"There's a massive scam going on, but this GAM isn't about the coronavirus or vaccines it's is about Lego. Tom. Glasgow lives in Dayton Ohio and he got scabbed he has three kids, seven eleven and sixteen, and they all love go, which is how he got into trouble. He'd been looking for a Lego X ray resistance fighter for his son that's the spaceship that Luke Skywalker an RTD to fly in star wars and so perusing facebook one day I saw an ad for it for what seemed to be a low but maybe not a too low of a price. and I thought Oh good. Let's grab that real. Quick Tom's is at the time x wings were going for about sixty or seventy dollars but the addy clicked on facebook listed it for a lot less the X. Wing was half price just thirty bucks but when the box arrived in the mail and Tom opened it, he found out that this great praise it came with a big catch. The pieces weren't the same quality they were. They were marsh more flimsy and they didn't have the same tolerances. They didn't go together quite as nicely as regular legos. The. Helmets for some of the mini figures weren't dual mode molded with a transparent pieces and solid pieces. They were just all solid and painted over yellow. Transparent Tom had bought what turned out to be a knockoff Lego set a counterfeit. He admits he may not have paid as much attention to the ads as he should have. But you know like it was this great deal and he trusted that in AD online would just be Like a group, the company that makes Lego in Denmark it more than five and a half billion dollars in sales. Last year like Oh is a huge business but this is not just a toy. Lego is an investment. The company retires it's kits after wild stops making them. So if you buy and hold something really popular and the price goes up, you could make a lot of money.

"skywalker" Discussed on The Power Trip

Dividend Cuts, Drone Deliveries, and Disney Plus
"Happy Monday. I'll believe you if you say it's Monday. They all do together as we have discussed before it's Day I know it's Day and I think it's not weekend. That's that's how I measure the days now not weekend day night. Three categories so Dan. Let's talk some. Gm less toxic dividends less toxic drones and as we wrap things up. Let's talk about something that you just wrote about Disney plus in whether or not it can save Disney stock but let's begin with the market now at the time of our taping here midday Monday all the major indices up slightly in this as part of a month Dan. This has just been an incredible month for the Dow. Snp THE NASDAQ ALL UP. Big having their best month in years so I want to start there as an investor. Are You thinking about this market? Because we have the market just chugging along this month and at the same time we have most states still under stay at home orders so I don't think about the market in the short term and right now. It's so emotional. So if there's a tiny little hint if like a village in Alabama says it's going to reopen a gym the market bounces up in and has a good day Which which I like that that there is sort of an appetite for optimism. Because we've been through such a miserable time that said I'd be looking at companies that are going to do well during this and after or companies that you really liked beforehand that you believe will bounce back when this is over. So I'm not looking to sort of ride out these trends or see what's going on or figuring out where the bottom is a. I think we've got some reckoning left to come but that's just a guess okay. So let's talk about some of those companies. Gm General Motors announcing its suspending. Its dividend and stock buybacks now shares. Gm down around forty percent for the year Dan. Gm has stopped producing cars. It has not yet announced a timeframe for when it will resume production. Gm is producing ventilators and personal protective equipment. What do you make them the GM news that it will suspend its dividends and stock buybacks? Yeah I think it's smart to preserve your cash when you're not selling any product. I understand I got some blowback on the live show from people saying Oh but you know we count on those dividends. I get it but you can't count on a dividend if a company goes bankrupt so I would rather GM stays in business longer puts itself in a situation where it has more cash long and a longer runway because eventually Americans will need cars this will end and people who were putting off a purchase will buy prices are really good so if you need a car it's actually a pretty good time to buy a car But I am in favor of taking being cautious as you can be right now. If you're a company okay. So along those lines I want to ask you about Disney. Disney has taken some heat for not suspending. Its dividend. What do you think yeah? I think it's a mistake. Look Disney's in a good position in terms of their available cash but they've also borrowed quite a bit of money. I mean. They borrowed the money for the Fox purchase. So to be paying cash. When you're not operating it seems like an artificial way to prop up your stock price. And I'm just not concerned about Disney's stock price in the short term. I'm I'm guessing. Executives are who often have bonuses tied to Stock Price? Okay well we're GONNA talk more Disney at a bit. But first I wanNA talk about a new development in the world of social distancing. Ups on Monday announcing that CVS and ups will start using drones. Yes drones next week to deliver prescription medication to the villages retirement community in Florida. Now Dan you are in Florida. The villages is the biggest retirement community in the country now. The drones will drop off prescriptions to a location near the community and a truck will finish the delivery. So this isn't door to door but this is going from. Cvs to somewhere near where people live. Yeah I mean. They've been testing this it. I think it's actually in Virginia in some rural town with the idea that you could bring prescriptions right to the door and you're gonNA see combinations of this and Robo trucks and other things delivering but the villages a unique place. These are generally stand alone homes or row houses And it's an entire community over one hundred thousand people that are all at least fifty five plus generally a lot older. So there's a lot of reason to minimize contact for these people. But I'm not entirely sure how drone to a truck to the door. Minimizes contact that. That seems to be the same amount of contact of driving the truck to the community and bringing it to the door. I it's a little strange for me but that said I think you're GONNA see Niche use of drones doing things like this drone isn't going to like bring you a Burrito and put it in your hand but it might leave your cvs box at your door or on your balcony or some other location if you live someplace. That isn't densely packed city. Okay so when you look over the next five to ten years in someone who studies the retail landscape when you look at the role of drones are you bullish or bearish. I know you say they're not gonNA be delivering burritos. But what's the role going forward? It's going to be niche. It's going to be filling. It's going to be a supplement in rural places where it doesn't make sense to send a truck it might sense and it's obviously state ver- to send drones but I don't think New York City or Alexandria. Virginia wants a sky filled with drones. That seems like a recipe for disaster. So they will be used. They will have a place but drones are much more likely to be used and are being used by say Walmart in a warehouse to take inventory. That is a much safer. It's it's it's not gonNa hit a you know a random person walking by. There's going to be a lot of commercial uses for drones but it isn't going to be to replace the Pizza Guy. Okay and no beer and wine up. Maybe some here in wine but probably I don't WanNA drone delivering a wine bottle. Have you ever had to why not if you're stairs? It's not fun now. That just seems fraught with issues. I mean I don't. I don't think you could do that. You know what daretodream dare to dream of a day and let's Talk Disney. We talked a little earlier but I want to talk about a few different developments here including something you just wrote about but first Disney today announcing big plans for May fourth now may fourth They will begin. Streaming Star Wars. The rise of skywalker. That'll be two months earlier than they planned. And then Disney also announcing that the final episode of the Clone Wars and the first episode of the mandatory and documentary will be available on May fourth so with all that in mind. You just wrote a piece this weekend. Dan Entitled Canned Disney Plus Save Disney stock. So can it. Yeah and. That's a very melodramatic headline I will. I will put out that. The goal of headlines are to get readership because I actually believe Disney. We'll be fine. It's other businesses. We'll be okay but what I want to really point out is. People are underplaying. Just how BIG DISNEY CAN BE A? When they last reported they went from ten million to fifty million subscribers that wasn't even based on corona virus growth that was based on adding a few new countries like eight or nine countries. Netflixing one hundred eighty one hundred somewhere in that ballpark. Disney plus is probably at seventy five million. Now wouldn't shock me. If in year there at one hundred twenty five one hundred fifty million and their cost structure is dramatically lower than Netflix. Netflix has to produce like two hundred series of quarter and throw them at a wall. They have to pay huge money to comedians. A Disney can pick and choose a few series based on its named intellectual property. You're GonNa Watch the new show starring one of the avengers. You're going to watch a new STAR WARS SHOW. You'RE GONNA watch when rise of skywalker is released. They don't have to spend the money. Net flicks does. This thing is going to be a cash cow quickly. Okay so I want to ask you more about that. And specifically the net flicks piece of that when you talk about their cost structure. How long can net flicks play that game? They're going to have to play that game. It lessens as they get into every market and they've localized content. They don't have the expense of having to record dialogue and new languages. They'll have some shows in each market. Eventually they're in a position where they can may be cut their contents bent in half but their content spend six to eight billion dollars a year whereas Disney pretty much everything Disney puts out on Disney. Plus that's original to the service is going to be a guaranteed hit when when you're watching a show in the Star Wars universe. It is not a big surprise that star wars fans. Watch it So Disney is really in a position where they can keep costs under control there also in a position where they can raise the price pretty easily six ninety nine a month. That's a great introductory price. But do you really think families are going to drop it if it goes to nine ninety nine over the course of the next three years Netflix too. I think can go up to about nineteen ninety nine and that will help some of their deficit but these are the two winners in the space and for Disney this is going to be its biggest segment. Maybe as soon as as well this year it'll probably be its biggest segment because others are closed but in a normal year this will be Disney's biggest segment if not in two thousand twenty one possibly almost certainly by two thousand twenty two and Dan Netflix. Still growing like a weed for the last quarter. They added almost sixteen million subscribers. So one hundred eighty three million subscribers now for Netflix When you look in as we're talking here we're talking about Disney on Netflix. Do you think there's room for both Disney plus and Net flicks to succeed over the next five to ten years or if this were wrestling is essentially a cage match. Were only one of them. Comes OUT ALIVE? No these two already one. It's a case of whether there's a market for HBO Max and Peacock and all the other services out there. Those are going to be harder cells but remember as people cut the cord and they're still eighty something million Americans who pay for cable. That's a hundred to two hundred dollars comes available to some of those people already have netflixing Disney plus so they'll probably dabble in ad one or two secondary services. But I think right now. This is a battle for the bronze medal. I if somebody can establish themselves in third place. That's a strong position to be in. I'm SORTA not counting. Who which is a Disney owned property because who was gonNA get bondholders by a lot of people with Disney plus and it's probably going to do reasonably well and be a driver for Disney. There's not a of original content being produced on on who so it's not that biggest spend But Yeah Disney a net flicks have have already lapped everybody. What about Amazon? Should we include them in the Disney Net flicks discussion? How many shows do you watch Amazon? you know we. I think we we watch a fair amount on Amazon prime. I think really I forget it exists Amazon is the Ebay of streaming services. How you know you forget. They exist and a lot of stuff. That's really hyped. When you actually dig into the research and find out how many people are watching it. It's like three hundred thousand people and they have some shows I've been interested in. I hear good things about the boys. I think that's what it's called and generally I've tried a few things on Amazon and nothing has struck. You're not paying for it. I don't precisely see where it's a particularly big value add. Would you cancel prime if they got Yeah No. I'm not cancelling prime. Yeah it makes no sense to cancel prime because right now. I don't know I'm delivering getting deliveries from. I was like four times a day. Like that's I think of something. I go in and put an Amazon Order. And now you have this fun. Amazon of will show up as opposed to previously when it would come the next day so I just don't think it's a relevant service. I don't precisely understand why they pay for it. Frankly okay okay so. I'm going to count you skeptical of. Do you have a Netflix? Or Disney plus recommendation for me. Well if you haven't watched the mandatory and you should absolutely watch the delorean oriented so right that I also on Netflix. This is a bit of a sleeper but I really liked glow It's based on the eighties women's wrestling group very very campy. The original show actually a little dark and vicious really well done. It's one of those things where you could say. Well I'm not a pro wrestling fan. It's not really about wrestling. It's about the relationships between the people And my wife didn't like it so that that's I would say women would like it but in case of my life that wasn't true and my wife really really really likes ozark and I have not been able to make myself watch it yet. Okay Good Ozark and glow there you go okay for our desert poll as we wrap up here over the next five years. You're on a desert island and you have to you have to buy one of these stocks and hold it. So let's go. Gm Disney net flex. Let's throw in. Cvs and UPS Disney without a shadow of a doubt. Cvs would be attractive if they didn't just by a health insurance company which absolutely is is something that makes me a little bit nervous but Disney has the number one theme park brand families are GonNa come back to Disney up. Whenever they put out the next Disney movies avengers Pixar or whatever it is people are going to go see those. I'm not worried about that company in the long term at all. Okay well there. You have it Dan Klein. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2020
"I'm Shawn Fantasy and this is the big picture. A conversation show about the most most anticipated movies of twenty twenty men. And we've been talking all about the movies of Twenty Nine Thousand Nine on our various Oscars awards conversation shows. We need to look forward now. The reason we need to look forward is because new movies are opening and they're not these dingy horror movies that they try to open January third and trick people into thinking might be decent. Here's there's actual big budget studio movies with movie stars this weekend. We have little movie called doolittle and a little movie called bad boys for life. We've seen both of these movies. He's rolling GonNa talk about one today. We'll talk about the other one later next week. Hopefully you will have seen that other one after that but mostly we're GONNA be talking about movies. We don't really know that much about other than the names and the titles and we're talking about why we're looking forward to them. Let's talk about the big picture aspect of movie going in twenty twenty. I'll just say as I've mentioned at the end of the year last year. The little worried about who will people go to the movies this year. Do you think that I'm justified in my concern. One hundred percent. We talk about this on every other podcast that we make now for the big picture because moviegoing has been Ben. I don't even know if I WANNA say in a state of crisis but it has been changing and the way that people consume movies has been changing pretty rapidly and dramatically for several years now but this feels like the come to Jesus Year I agree so obviously twenty. Nineteen was deeply loaded especially by Disney with mega event movies. Not just the vendors endgame not just Star Wars Skywalker but the lion king and Aladdin reboots Dumbo reboot toy story. Four came through. There were a lot of movies. Movies that Disney at least perceived as moviegoing events now in addition to that we got a lot of great fun stuff we got once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite became a box office success. And we'll the four versus Ferrari and did very well. There's always going to be surprises. I would guess that the movies that we're going to talk about here and you're gonNA choose ten and I'm GONNA choose ten. They'll be some some big ASS. Hits hits among those movies but the movie is not the schedule is not loaded like it was last year. I think there will be a distinct or of panic panic around. What's going on at the box office? Pretty much by April or May I think we have our first taste of the panic. That's coming though. Yes yes so this week you and I saw the movie do little which stars Robert Downey junior as Dr Doolittle Let me say this movie is terrible. It is terrible will in a way that I have not experienced in my adult life and I was in a deep amount of pain watching it. I don't think you had negative reaction to the movies I did though well L.. This movie is very bad. Let's just get that affront if it is not a successful movie but I do kind of put on my. This is a kids movie helmet at some point eight and I think I'm not looking to be as rewarded on a deep emotional or cinematic level as you are or once. I realized that the movie is Robert. Downey junior talking to animated animals. Sure here's my thing. This movie makes cats look like grizzly man. Like it's really true. I think that I had a better time doolittle than I did at cats. That's astonishing still worst experience that I've pat movie in like five years. There was no plot and it was creepy people singing weird songs about what kind of cats they are I like I can't I know I've said exactly that five times but I will never wrapped my head around the fact that hundreds of people sought that that was a good idea. The wanting one thing. The cats and Dr Doolittle do have in common is that they are both based on previously existing Ip. There's been not one but two different iterations of Dr doolittle over the years. Of course the very famous nineteen sixty seven version with REX Harrison. And then Eddie Murphy came back as a doctor doolittle of sorts in the I believe in the early outs. This version has had some trouble in the reason. It is so bad ad will the reasons it is so bad manifold. Let's start with some of the production problems so in April twenty nineteen Hollywood reporter had a report about the struggles of the making of this movie. They wrote the new photography lasted twenty one shooting days not including new postproduction work according to insiders and came after an overhaul courtesy of Chris. McKay the helmer the lego Batman movie. Now Chris McKay was not the original director of this Dr doolittle movie which I believe was originally called the voyage of Dr Doolittle. Yes and it was written and directed directed by Stephen Geoghegan Listener. Stephen Geoghegan wrote and directed a movie called Syria which does not in any way resemble the story telling the joke writing the the general disposition of doolittle. Those two things have nothing to do with each other. It appears that Stephen Geoghegan was just a little bit out of his his depth in making a movie like this teach on report. Sources say that it's become apparent to the studio and producer. Susan Downey Joe Roff and Jeff Kirschenbaum. Last fall that the movie budget at one hundred and seventy five million dollars needed some surgery. Geoghegan is known for his Oscar. Winning work on layer dramas traffic and Suryana is his first time tackling visual effects heavy production. That was also comedic in tone own. Self they bring in these new folks Chris McKay among them. Also I believe the writer of the teenage mutant Ninja Turtles series was brought in to Do some script doctoring. Bring didn't help I don't think we need to recap necessarily story. It is technically a voyage. doolittle does go on a voyage. Why do you think they've changed the title? Because I have no idea. Maybe they're just hoping that if all you hear is little. Then you'll think of the other. Innovations I have Dr doolittle and then go see a movie when you say you. Who Do you mean? I people with children people who go to the movies. I don't know. Would you recommend this movie. The parents parents with children. I don't know what your life is like or what your parents rearing is like. I really don't. I don't know what you're looking for in a experience with your your children. We don't have to talk about the entire movie but can we talk about a couple qualitative issues with the film. Fire Way you turn to me about twenty minutes into this movie or maybe it was like seven minutes but it felt like twenty. It felt to me like nine hundred. And you pointed out aghast that Downey junior performance was dubbed not just align here there but literally his all of his voice work the entire film the entire fell. It's very obvious as you're watching the movie s and I also have to say the dubbing is. I turned back to you and asked whether other Robert Downey junior is supposed to be Scottish. or whether there were some troubling racist elements to his voice. It really is all over the place in not got a great way. So the dubbing does not achieve anything additive to the movie. We can only speculate what had happened. My guess is Robert Downey. Junior is an adventurous actor and he likes to. He likes to make choices certainly felt like he made a choice in the original shooting of this film used a certain voice or accent and then they the production decided. This isn't going to work now. It's possible that there was even a sort of production error like it wasn't properly recorded. Yeah that'd be incredible mismanagement of this movie. That's in play. But the other actors that appear in the movie and we should say a great many quality actors appear in this movie up chief among among them Michael Sheen doing his damnedest to play a compelling villain and my beloved. Jessie Buckley shows up in this movie. With two lines of dialogue. She sleeps on a bed. Basically throughout the film Talladega how. That is Jessie Buckley until about sixty minutes. And it's very strange. Antonio banderas shows up Antonio Matarese Oscar contender Antonio Banderas. Who is fine but none of those figures seem to be dubbed? They all seem to be using their natural speaking voices. And there's no eighty are in play here so the whole thing is just absolutely confounding and it is highly distracting as you're watching the movie every time you see Dr Doolittle onscreen and he is on screen all the time because he is the titular character. You're like why. Why is the track sink? Not Correct with the film. This is a film released by a major studio. How did how did this? Hundreds of million dollars spent on it. I don't really know it's it's it's staggering and an unfortunate You wrote down here that the dramatic climax of this movie is literally a Dragon Fart. Which is true spoilers? I guess I often as people in my generation do misuse the word literally. But in this case it's literally what what happens. It is literally what happens and I just I I was in and I was in pain in the eightieth minute of this movie. I was like God Damn Emmett. I'm supposed to be alive in the world. A little community harrogate that his bad movie. But I think I said to you afterwards. It was no less sensical to me than say Melissa sent. And I think I probably turn to you more times during the listen to it was like what the hell is happening opening. And what are we serving like the children of America

"Let's return to our conversation with Victoria. Mahoney she was the second unit director for Star Wars the rise of Skywalker and she's she's got a lot more in the pipeline including the first TV adaptation of work. By the late SCI FI novelist Octavia Butler before Mahoney made history as the first woman woman and person of color to have directing duties on a star wars movie. She was a struggling indie filmmaker and before that she was an actress. Mahoney talks about the personal sacrifices acker Fai to move from acting to making her first feature film. I went back to waiting tables and I Hadn't done it for years. I was waiting tables and people who I had done fancy chops we will come in and see me and I'm telling you that I held my Chin up and look them straight in the eye and had no shame in my game I was just like I didn't even I was. I knew what I was doing in every nickel and every time that I made from cocktail waitressing went into short films again as I said that I made in my house because I knew that I needed to work to learn grow and people wouldn't hire me so I thought I'll hire myself. I make my own house in my own way but I had to be behind the camera so I you know over time I lived in the red I shadowed for years. You don't get money for shadowing you go to work for five weeks on. A job is basically an unpaid intern showing. Yeah and just trying to learn watching and mostly someone's therapist because they spent so much time with these guys would just complain complain to look at them. Like I was taking three buses passes to get there by five. Am in the dark and who knows where in California and they would complain about. How horrible something? Whatever then I'd directors all so many directors tried to talk meant guys charge? Talk me out of directing TV. Can you imagine right now my whole career my well being my health insurance everything has come from that. I was open to making television. Television has been kinder. If you know you know Hollywood has not been quick to hire me as a first unit director since then till now ten years two thousand nine to now ten years do you think being a second unit director on Star Wars will change that I know it has because I already know the stuff that I'm in discussions about the yes. Yes and the minute. Jj made that's what hit the point. Was He watermark me jumping into the gang house exactly the point. That's a great phrase watermark. Do because because it is somebody else who has to say. This person is legit rather than that person's work yet that's sad. It is heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking because think of I for me if we didn't have this shape shifting in the landscape if you didn't have that moment where she was able to bring me into TV. And I didn't have of this footage. 'cause I assembled something. Jj asked me to send him to things. And I went in the night and made these clips we sat and put all the stuff together with action explosions things. I'd done. That people weren't regarding thing even though it was there you could go watch it still. It was like we're GONNA get a girl to do action so I don that new watch my film. But if he didn't have that amount of work to reference I I would have been in trouble so. TV ended up being a place. Where film is still not studios as you said? Big Budget Franchise Films Studios Way behind the curve. We're talking with Victoria Mahoney. She is the second unit director on Star Wars. The rise of skywalker own asking about the stories that you wanNA tell there are a couple of projects you're working on one of them is is the Michigan Jordan peele upcoming. HBO Series lovecraft country. HP lovecraft has his own history with racism. And I'm curious. What about lovecraft country and what they can say about where we are and where we need to get to? We'll meet Green. Did this amazing thing that every aspect of what you just pointed out. She flipped it. And it's so bang on. It was an alarmingly exciting job for me to step into their things that I got to play with on the job that people have not done in any realm of black folks so just full stop and The the actors that I got to work with Misha's scripts her words The production design the skull. John Paul Jones Black Man. I've known for thirty years since we were kids and he did some magical stuff on it but what we got to play with when it hits the audience is you will be amazed and it has his bitter sweetness. That most of idea does is that it's so exciting. I and it's heartbreaking because you think two thousand nineteen nineteen I WANNA ask about another writer with whom you're working in that is Octavia Butler. Who is a great science fiction writer? She's also an African American woman. That is called Don John. Coming from producer David Rene and Charles King what about Octavia Butler and what she represents. Well she represents the world to me because that trilogy of books it was called Zeno Genesis serious when I came out now. It's called Lily's brewed. We're calling dawn. And when I read that book I was deeply impacted because I didn't feel reflected in the world and a lot of which you know so subversive it's about slavery colonialism and I'm actually well and he and and coexistence and it's done in this really lovely light light way that you just you need it and then it it's you afterwards. So I took the three books and put them into a series and I should tell you that the first time and we went out to pitch it the buyers were very homogenized and we did not get any traction and no one knew what to do and they looked like they were just. There was no way they were going to give eva myself in Charles one hundred million dollars to make a TV series. It was just it was not even I mean it was like polite light courtesy that they medicine tick the box. I'm telling you and then you know I went and did star was my my business if it was doing when they see us and then we came back we went another pitch around and all the places places. We went musical chairs. Different people at from the CEOS and we had a great experience it was a bidding war and will make announcement soon but it's extremely exciting and and everything that I saw. When I was a young person read that book? That's what's in the show and it's it's really fun. And it's a love letter to Octavia and what she meant to me into many many many kids like me still does so. There's a young black girl who goes to see star wars and you're sitting next to her and you're leaning over during the movie Eh. What are you gonNa say what scene I shot that I did that? What would you point out Well I probably wouldn't say that in a way that it's the same as any DP would never say i. That's my frame. You know because Seoul school but what I would say probably is. You can do that not that I would say. Yes you come Victoria. Thank you so much for coming in Anki so much John for having me that was writer. Director Victoria Mahoney. Ain't she was the second unit director for Star Wars the rise of skywalker. And that'll do it for today. We have more share with you. But you have to sign up at the frame dot org slash slash newsletter of John Horne. Thanks for listening. We're back here tomorrow at the Broadcast Center..
The Mandalorian Deep Dive
"Let's take a look at I. Guess the mandatory series win. You got done watching it. I guess. How overall satisfied were you with it up and down for you like this episode was good? But this episode is kind of a Dud. What what was your first impression as a whole I think I'd dug the whole the whole series whole a few more times? I really dug it from beginning to end when it was down it was still great. Its lowest points were still pretty high points. Okay overall. I really dug it but I also have like a huge love of Westerns and Samurai movies. And this kind of felt like it kind of felt like a way for star wars to play in a new sandbox. It felt very reminiscent of the original trilogy while also managing to kind of have its identity. Yes okay segues is into a good point. I noticed right away on the series the simple things like the fades from scene to scene. Where the same little you'll circular fades aides or sideswipe fades from? Yeah from you hope. You cannot do that when I graduated from film school. One of one of the things they told us in in film school is don't ever do that. It looks it looks amateur. It looks bad. Really for whatever reason star wars can do it and the reason they the reason they can do it is because they just kind of did it at a time when they were defining what Star Wars. This is so when episode four came out or Star Wars or the original movie nineteen seventy seven when that came out already visually. It was so distinct and so oh very specifically star wars that it can incorporate silly things like a like a cross dissolve across fade or a circle Michael Fade or whatever you wanNA call them It can do that because it is star wars and and if you saw that if you went to go watch the avengers and and you see that really slow white from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen to transition. It would look very out of place in Lynn very artificial because because that's not part of cinema language but it is a part of Star Wars language and incorporating that into the man. delorean was something. I've thought was incredibly smart. Yes you actually see that in things like Djeddai Fallen Order And a lot of video games as well. Okay we'll incorporate that in the cut scenes it just it's A. It's an easy visual indicator that this is star wars I love that when I saw that on the very episode. That was one of the simple simple fan services that the what other fans services or things did you see that Cairo. I the main thing. The first first thing I saw for sure was was the rifle and everybody talks about the right okay but it deserves to be talked about talking about man. Does the knife owned the mandatory rifle. Yeah it's It's it's kind of like a long rifle with a tuning fork. Yes that was Boba Fett rifle in the holiday special which is the infamous holiday special which I've seen and it is as bad as everybody says and it's not like it's not like a challenge to go watch it do do not watch it. Don't and watch it. It's not it's not even worth laughing at. It's it's so hard to watch but In the BLU ray release of the Star Wars The star awards box set episodes one through six on the bonus disc. There's actually an Easter egg on their. That has the entire animated segment from the holiday special. Yes so you can actually see that and it's really cool but in that segment it's very much like a Ralph Bakshi inspired character design. It's really Kinda cool but you do see Z.. BOBA FETT teaming up with Luke at first and then he betrays him but he's got this weird rifle that should never ever work and everybody thought it was a cool looking rifle. I never thought we'd seen it and live action. Let alone we would disintegrate people. Yes that was another little throwback to empire pyre when vader tells Boba Fett notice integration. Yes because he had that rifle and rifle disintegrates. Yes it does look a little bulky on him but they still make it work. It works completely nothing about again. That goes back to what I was saying before about the visual language of star wars and again in the empire strikes rex back in the original theatrical cut. There's a shot on cloud city of a guy running through running through cloud city as it's being attacked by the empire but he's holding. What's supposed to look like a futuristic device but even in the eighties? Everybody was like that is an ice cream maker. Awesome husband was just running with an ice cream maker but they brought that back And so the the client played by Verna Herzog. He actually carrying all of his best car in one of those ice cream. Oh and so. That is another throwback that I really so when he opens up the best guard the open up that containers just the ice cream maker and it's the same kind of ice cream maker that that that extra was carrying awesome and it's Super Fund. It has no bearing on anything. If you didn't know that it's it doesn't take away or add anything to it except for the factory like I know that the super fans hansel catch it. Sure the casual fan okay. Whatever you know they won't even notice it but still get to enjoy it absolutely? Yeah and the show is filled with stuff like that. There is an episode where the episode with Bill Burr where they go to like a heist episode. Yes super the prison ship. Yeah there is one on living person on that ship. That person was played by Matt. Land Her who was the voice of anecdotes skywalker in the clone wars. Yeah and a whole bunch of other stuff but it's cool to have that clancy brown played a de Veroni wasn't Ronin. He was different. He was a different species. He was the red guy the horn. Yeah but The Big Guy. Yeah but that was clancy Brown. who was the voice of sabotage press and a bunch of other true in the rebels? Yeah and and Star Wars rebels he was sabotage press. It was really cool to see people from the animation side of things being incorporated into the live action. which is the kinds of stuff? I want to see moving forward with specific characters. Sure On the inverse of that you know we're we're getting to see live action or we're getting see animation people in live action and on the mandatory and then also in Rizal Skywalker. We got sorry guys. I'm talking about it. We got to hear. Canaan from rebels was one of the voices. You heard you heard Soka. You heard every you know people who were doing voices specifically for the cartoons in for for super fans you know which if I may indulge myself they already introduced you as a superfan. Oh good good a resident expert. Sorry whatever is just whatever cooler than I actually am but it was really fun to be able to to see those things. And if let's say I'm talking to you Leigh and you have no idea who Canaan is and we see rise skywalker you're thinking it's super cool because you're seeing this really cool scene. I think it's super cool because I'm seeing is really cool scene and also Kanaan's yeah and so it's just kind of another little the thing and and the reason I bring rays of Skywalker with this is because it's all happening right now right now You know we can. We can talk about this next year when you know when I owned the box set of the man delorean and I own the skywalker. Saga and I can watch those at the same time and and it doesn't necessarily have the same effect because we can watch it whenever this is something unique to December of two thousand nineteen this is as we're experiencing the lore. which again there are some of us like like you and I who will watch the cartoons and the TV shows and read the books and read the comments but there are are some people who only will take the movies or now the TV shows as that's all they know about wars and that's totally cool but at this point you know we saw in the Manda Laurean the child the baby iota used the force to heal somebody and a week later? We're watching the rise of skywalker skywalker. And we're seeing those same force. Power is being used and just from a serial point of view for storytelling. I I'm completely fascinated by. I'm really really excited that I can experience it this way and nobody else was going to experience it this way in now even now. We're we're staring at the New Year here in the next couple of days. People aren't going to be able to experience it that way anymore. Because it's already happened past and it's kind of a lightning in a bottle
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Conversation
"Congruence! My name is Hudson I'm here with professor yes it is. It is good to be here and I think those who have listen to the show will probably long enough where anticipating and waiting with breath debated off this episode. To hear Zaki, ruminate about the brand new star wars. That's right about the star wars episode, but not just Kim and I. Yes, we are joined by our special guest Omar sorry guys found like has gone from one from one to another rumor. So that's right we we are. We normally have a Omarosa for. Critic noted film critic joining us, but we decided to to. Keep it in the family, maybe family. And I'm not a film critic. but I am a huge huge star. Wars. Fan Simon excited to be here. Thank you very much fun talking about the movie which we saw together on Thursday night. That's what we've been doing for the past four five years for all the newbies right, yes. so we are of course talking about the rise of Skywalker and nine, which is the close of this current trilogy and Per Disney's marketing. Of. The skywalker saga began forty two

"By the way looks really weird at this point this is where we got a warning at the beginning of this movie because it was like if you are somebody who suffers from seizures. Here's our epilepsy. Like the strobe lights and the effects in this movie could cause you to have problems and this is the scene when you're looking at how teams face because you never really get a look at his face. He doesn't have much of a face. To begin with his is completely gone completely white and you only see him like inflicts of Light and he's talking to Kylo and he says I want you to kill this girl. The girl that you've been having like sports skype calls with and he's like who who is she and then it's like and then seen cut to the resist. So that's that's the opening. Yeah which I mean. Look it's like think it's fine if you want to do that but again then we just pick up the Pacing Sofa we just we cut to what you you started talking about earlier. which is now? It's time to find the macguffin. 'S A we got A. We got a nice little montage of kylo getting the mccloughan tough in the way he made this movie. They call it a wave finder which I don't understand why they don't just call it a pollock Ron. It looks like macron. It is Hala Krahn. I feel like way. Finder is no different than Holliman. Like you could just say holograms can tell us how to get there. But instead they call it away find her and taper is going to tell us how to get there as in find it. Do they think audiences are that stupid. Whatever well yeah so we see Kylo do it? And then we're GONNA see The North and a half to sit through like an hour of ray and company find their own which is just like a series of planet hopping and like quick joke. Marvel movie lines out. And it's so it's so fast paced and it's like think it feels like we're just waiting for the next action seem to happen and then I'm waiting for that to end so we can again. This is where I had Ebadi for Abrahams because I feel like he's fixing things that were wrong with with the last Jedi. We never got to see our three beloved characters. I use that word in quotes beloved Ray Fan Po in this movie together so he's got together in this movie we they are together a lot in this movie their into their together so much right exactly but you know who's not with them. Rose Tico the worst character in star wars ever hold on us. I do people hate rose. I see see this all the time because I the reason for me personally. The reason why I hate rose I I will remember Kelly. Marie Tran Fabulous actress. I've seen her another shit she's great. I'm Abe if she's gotten hate from the trolls. God bless you girl your your frigging amazing. But you should have done they. They should have given better. I've seen this twitter Hashtag. Rose tico deserve deserve better fish. Plays Kelly Marie Tran deserve better. I don't give a fuck about rose. TICO rose tico honestly Finn in the last shed. I was about ready to have the most amazing amazing choice for a writer and for them to actually sacrifice himself he was going to sacrifice himself to save everybody at the end of the last night. And he's almost there and you're like you're I'm like because I knew that people were blessed I when I saw it and so you're like whoa. This is this the big moment because I I feel like he's GonNa sacrifice of which executive that's amazing that some like primary character is going to sacrifice himself for the good of collective others. That's that's great. That's I wanna see what happens here. And then at the last minute rose tico. Just shoves him office PAP so he can't save everyone. Everyone's going to die. I and she says he goes. Why did you do that? She's like because love is the way we're going to move and we're going to get through this together not by this in like she. has this like awkward. Kiss within what you WANNA do. Awkward Kiss Fine but again like at that point in time she does not know anything about Luke skywalker. Montage like a Ghosts coming to visit or saving. Everybody she doesn't know about any of that. Okay offshoot noses. I stopped him from from stopping this giant machine. That's GONNA kill everybody. Everybody all of the resistance and the first order is going to rule the world and all my friends are going to die. That's what she did by doing that. And then yes luke does come in and save everybody but she. You didn't know that was gonNA happen. So that's why we hate rosie not even not even talking about the middle of the movie where rose in thin or like off the find and some guy who you know again. I'm here talking about Rizal Skywalker. But you're asking me why I hate rose so much and she's just an objectively bad character and I don't feel like you can say that. Ah I don't feel like you can't say that and not have a realistic view of last shed. I like her more than I do. As a character I mean sure I mean I think that she was a representation of one of the one of the core themes of the last Jedi which was the struggle between preservation and destruction. Right like where Kylo wants to burn everything down because everything that came before was corrupt and bad and he wants to build something new and and in a way. Luke wanted to do that as well and and DJ Benishi Oh yeah he's also like this sort of cynical nikolic. Both sides are bad like there's a lot of representation of that idea of just like just burn it all down. See that's what I never. I never bought the fact that the this this is. My my problem with the overall movie is is that I never thought that the that the jed eye that they're both bad because that's not what I grew up with but but that's but that's sort of the point in what Luke eventually learns that is that preservation is actually good. There are good things that came from the Jed eye and that he learns learns to accept that he needs to be this legend for people and then he needs to remain that symbol and he needs to give them what they needed. And so it's also between between PLO and lay this idea of preservation versus like. I'M GONNA go after them and people are gonNA sacrifice themselves. We're GONNA Green Blob ship. And she's like it matters more more that we keep ourselves alive preservation is better. And so there's there's this idea of like holding onto the confronting it and accepting that there are failures ears and we need to learn from them in. Failure is important as we need to hold onto those things and learn from them and move forward but you know even though you like the character rose Tico so you know who doesn't like the character of Roscoe J.j Abrams C.. Rose Tico out of this movie. She's on the screen for a minute and sixteen seconds when she was arguably one of the main protagonists in the last shed I and I do feel badly. For the actress. Culinary had was speaking to E. Entertainment weekly like three three days before the cast saw the first version of the movie release and she was like a Kelly was talking about like how ray and rose the scenes together. It's really cool because it's like you know female empowerment and like how would we often see star wars like two women talking with each other about their respective plights and everything. I'm I'm like now. What have actually been good to see? I would have been down for that but because the none of those choices to me were made in the last shit I but I would like that here again. I like the actress more than the character. The but none of that is evident in this movie. And I've got an official statement from Lucasfilm one of the writers who wrote the film with Jay. Jay Abraham said that a lot of the scenes with arose Seco Warwick Lay Oregon and they obviously had because of the tragedy with Carrie Fisher. They had limited footage that they could use and they said that. A lot of these scenes with rose and layup. ENRA- were not photo realistic enough for them to put them in this movie. And that's why they moved them which is not gonNA make painters rise of skywalker any happier. Yeah but also like I mean that's nice to say but where would that fit in this movie like. This was already very packed movie. They're saying they had lots of scenes is that they would have loved to put in like how could lose like two hours and sixteen minutes or something like it would have been fine with me. It was like two hours and forty five minutes like like I would have been fine with that if I felt like it would have time to breathe more but again turn I ever talked about the fact that we felt like it was both moving too fast to move slow at the same time. And so what you're saying. I feel like I know a lot of people. Blame the jet. I for some of the problems. That rises skywalker has but in a lot of people say the jet. I took what J.J. Abrams didn't force awakens and sort of like shit over right boat but hear me out on this one even if you think that he did bad things with it I feel like at least in the last Jedi. He actually took the things from force awakens. uh-huh and did something with them even if you didn't like what he did with them he actually took those elements whereas riser skywalker. I feel like ignores a lot of those elements. One wants to pretend that they don't exist. which makes it? I think even worse because it makes it really feeling coherent. I mean he had to make a choice. Abrams had to make a choice. Who am I going to go? No I'm going to go with the people who like bloodshed. I am I going to go with the original people who really didn't like blessed I who are subscribing to Disney plus. I WanNa see clone wars and rebels and and and the Old Republic Shit and the new trilogy and Mandal Orien- like who am I going to make happy and I feel like you turn. Armstrong are not the majority here. I I agree. Yeah I'm not. I'm not saying he should have necessarily because there were a lot of people that didn't like it. He necessarily taken that there was an ran with it but I do feel like he needs in order to make somebody happy he needed to not pretend it didn't exist one hundred percent. This movie makes nobody happy. I don't even know you people who are like me who we're like fan boys of Star Wars. I'm we're not happy with this movie but I to me. I'm like again. It's it's all right. It's okay because it totally ignores you. Write it just basically wipes away so much of the stuff that happened in the last Jedi. Like I'm jumping ahead. But the thing with the with the with the lightsaber when he like she had in the last Jedi at the beginning when she hands him the lightsaber and he literally throws it over his shoulder. Like it's a piece of trash again. This is your your your fathers. Lightsaber is like say Reno. Isn't it was important item for him and he just tucks it and themes like what the fuck. That's terrible. I would never look would never do that. And then which is my my mind problems with in my disco. I don't know but I'll end it but it's not like he ever through his lightsaber. And they originally my points that I feel like the Luke skywalker Luke skywalker overall which is totally shit on unless Luke skywalker. That I knew in Love was not present on the screen in the last Jedi and that was is my one of my biggest problems with it but this movie just takes so many of those moments that I didn't like then just wipes them away because there's a point in time where Ray I'm I'm jumping ahead but there's a point in time where chuck's Lightsaber as well. But most luke like grabs. It sounds like a jet is weapons should be treated with respect. Don't you think yeah that was that was like an active dig and honestly asleep at least acknowledging what happened right like it's totally. It's it's the complete. Just ignore ignore the themes of the last movie. Ignore some of the events of the last movie like I'm sure we'll talk about it a little bit later but like one of my biggest problems was like at the end of the movie when the whole like fleet fleet turns up out of nowhere after like an hour but that makes so much more sense if you tie into the theme of the previous.

"Just want to put my cards on the table. Right at the front rise of Skywalker is not a great movie. Okay it is not even really a good movie. It's all right movie. Get what happens in less which left a lot of people who are fans a star Star. Wars really annoyed his. They decided to clean up the mess and cleaning up the mess leads to a really really jam packed movie. That doesn't have any room to breathe. It takes a lot of weeks that I don't know where the puck thing force. Helium Lean. How how did you see? She's deflecting line. Lean only Mason Nokia. Whatever anyway it takes leaves is trying to say and I think it's not a good movie however compared to the last Jedi it is like Shakespeare because the last Jedi for like five minutes here getting the this shit the way because this is what this is initiated us to talk about this in the first place? Wow you feel or personal. Do you feel like the last night is a good movie or do you feel like it's just the best of the three. I think I would qualify it as a good movie. Yeah I enjoyed it. I don't understand that. The side is objectively a bad movie. The choices it makes and the things that ask us to do with the characters that we've long loved it just but uh-huh Here's the thing I didn't feel like we need to really have a discussion about that. I feel like what we can agree on is the Disney. Didn't have a plan. They bought a four billion dollar franchise and and decided to make a trilogy which I guess they did that. Just because that's like the cool thing to do like they did trilogies. Let's do one now. But they didn't have a frigging plan. And like I know people have problems with the prequels but as I said so if you bought online at least the prequels had a plant it had a line of thought it had lower like the writing was terrible. Oh and I felt like the execution was pretty bad and somebody effects weren't great but at least I believe that the screenwriters and the producer and the director like had a vision of what they wanted to show us like growing up and then he kills the people killed his mom and then he becomes dark and we saw how that happened. I couldn't even tell you what the last three movies were about like. I guess they were about this girl named Ray who was the daughter. Granddaughter Powell Patine which how did that happen did he get busy. I don't know but like I just like why. Here's the thing. Why do I care about these people? At least I cared about Anna. Can I cared about luke doc I cared about layoffs on never gave a shit about ray fin and I never cared about any of these people. Why did they did they show them my TV? So my movie screen and I'm like why are you here. Why are you bothering me? So that's where I'm coming from. I here's the thing that the rise of Skywalker can be accused of anything and one of them is having a lot of fan service in it but considering that the last Jedi I had virtually no fan service in it I feel like the rise of Skywalker can be excused for like letting fans is literally get wet with themselves with everything. They've got nights of rain on my God. Oh my God lake For Stanley all my God like real Landau Landau like. It does so much that we wanted to see. We hope to see in like this entire trilogy. It was just like shoves them all into one movie. And there's no time to breathe and you're like how the hell do that happened. BALCON game bag. I guess I guess he's back like like he cloned himself just sorcery. Oh again like they did. They don't even explain it. They don't even get a hand. Wait to your and it's just like it happens deal with it and then so we can talk about the movie. Now go ahead. I know you agree with me. They showed about a pre compliant. Yes I completely agree that I mean I I definitely I I will agree with you. I thought the Prequel trilogy was the better trilogy. And it's not even close not even close so thank. God Oh my God okay okay literally. You're not totally malfunctioning. Okay well I also say that as somebody that probably enjoyed the prequel trilogy Morrison focused because I actually think. It's pretty underrated I think that I think George. Lucas is really good at world building and he has a lot of interesting ideas and I know this is a fairly common opinion but he just needs to be. I think edited a little bit helped along with some dialogue choices and so on But I would much prefer stilted dialogue weird performances and silly CGI then like a bland flat world that that doesn't really go anywhere and a story. That is not really a cohesive because that's what star wars to to me at least is it's fantastic and like yes. The new trilogy is much prettier and the performances are better and the dialogue is beer but lots of movies can do that. You know what I mean. The imagination being imaginative. That's would star wars was to me. It's it's really like was when I was a kid like opened my mind to like all of these new crazy worlds and aliens and fun fantasy like things and that's what I liked about it so personally for me. I enjoyed the prequel trilogy much more than and I personally will say well. They didn't know that was going to be Luke's Luke's father in the empire strikes back. They just thought of that along the way so it wasn't like they had a plan back then but they had lucas as somebody who has an over arching figure who was in charge of Star Wars. Here what do you have. Kathleen Kennedy. I guess who just doesn't care really. What way director takes again? I feel like the ends of the three is the best one we because when I saw the force awakens yes it is basically a reprise of new hope fine but like it helped me and I was like excited for where we could go. Oh my God like seriously this is serious. Part of Brent. I'M NOT CLASSIC J.J. Abrams is that he's he's good at starting things. Yes exactly and I'm like Oh my God like who smoke in like what's his backstory and the Knights of ran and how Kylo fall to the dark side. Who's this ray girl and she can do everything? I'm sure there are going to explain that. Not

"Of man that was an arrangement by the fantastic Kelly. Kelly Gruber if you've been following the adventures of the child slash baby on the man delorean. I hope you enjoyed that little Christmas Christmas Carol. Not that was the wildest thing you've ever this is the I read Star Wars Comic Comic Books Special. I'm your host care for Ski. With host Brian Murray and we have so many thoughts about rise of Skywalker if you have not yet seen rise of Skywalker skywalker hang up stop. I mean you don't have to but we are going to spoil the ever loving hell out of it so I guess. Make your piece full spoilers. For all of rise of Skywalker we will not be talking about the mandatory. In 'cause I still haven't seen the season finale but rise of skywalker. This is what we're here for. This is what all of this podcast special has been. Brian are you okay. Yeah Yeah I'm sure our you free things situation normal here So first off. We read so many comic books in anticipation of this movie and there were so many comics that they released saying specifically specifically. Read these in anticipation of this movie. Do you think any of it actually helped your understanding of the movie Brian. No in fact. I think the only thing that I saw that prepared for this movie was The bit of Palpitation from fortnight ornate fortnight the the video game that all the kids are playing these days. What are you talking about? So there was a star wars event and as as part of the Star Wars event in fortnight. They had the audio message that the opening crawl of Rizal skywalker refers to. Oh my God really audio is important. I'm not in the movie. Wow okay okay. I had two pieces of media that I thought did did some at least semi effective foreshadowing of what happened in the movie and one of them was in fucking alphabet squadron..

"It almost feels like blade runner and I kind of dig this plan at even though it's pretty crazy seeing all this black black magic occult stuff basically going on in the star wars film but because it said I dig. It feels different enough that I'm like okay. Yeah let's explore this. I love the emperor's headquarters there here. Because there's this giant trapezoid at first I thought it might be like sand crawler. It's this huge floating building. We never go in. It's just floating. There reminded me of something. Thank you. bye-bye sharper image. You know those little floating toys that have magnets anti gravity severe. Yeah Yeah and is it supposed to be a threat that it could fall on you at any moment. It's open just tall enough for Adam driver who is tall man. Walk under and we get down there. We see the emperor. I thought he was dead. I I mean he's got those milky eyes and I feel like. Jj is taking some Sam Ramey here. He's showing the emperor only strobe lights and quick cuts and quick zooms. uh-huh yeah the emperor has always been some from something of a horror movie. I Linda Blair and the exorcist or death in ignore Bergman's seven seal here he. He has the final order. And it's thousands and thousands of star destroyers. Do they all come out of the is like to see raise them up for they all hiding under the ice and and they had crew so let people under the they have crew with new uniforms like somewhere. He was getting read. stormtrooper armor manufacturer. There's so many logistical questions Russians. He has all these ships. We were complaining. There are too many deaths stars we to death stars in the original and then the droid ship. Oh boy wait for this one. We had star killer Giller base here. Jj's just gonNA say screw it. There are thousands of death stars. Each of these has a death star. Laser you don't even need moon size base aced anymore. You just throw that gun ownership. Yeah but you know that is the history of technology a mainframe computer used to take up an entire room and now it's your watch that seems it's logical. After enough time the power the death star can be reduced to a Canon ownership miniaturisation uncle. Okay logical maybe but satisfy is. It's just really we're GONNA do another planet killer weapon that we have to destroy. I guess that is what is overall nine part. Trilogy is about lasers that planets. The emperor can't let go of a bad idea. It never works but I'm going to keep doing it and you know what that is. The history of success to we can look at it as a series of failures but Thomas. Thomas Edison failed many times before he invented things. I mean this could be the plan to finally get right. He needs to lead it. What's interesting is we know from Kylo Ren is is no interest in joining the old? He's all about reinventing the world in his image and burning the past he doesn't want to join the emperor. That was very very clear in last jed eye. Let's make something new. And he still has that idea in his head. He still wants to be a fascist in charge urge the galaxy like. I don't know if it's that new. Well yeah he still wants control. That much is true but I don't think he likes the idea of having to sit in someone else's chair and so when he's is making this packed with the emperor and yet he's going to kill the girl we'll see pretty clearly. He has no ambition to kill. Ray He wants to use her power to hold sway over the universe and kill the old farts like the emperor but for some reason in order to serve the emperor. He's got to get those nights of Ren back and somebody picked up all of those pieces of his helmet. He smashed in the last Jedi. was that a chimp like from planet of the Apes. Caesar I mean I I swear to God say went to the island banks that are like what are we got. We got Caesar all right. Let's put long years and a mask on him and Caesar will fix this element. Look I totally we down. I want that to be a character in Star Wars. Just have a be an actual monkey with SPACECOM. Let's do it. So he's clinging to this identity the silly identity then again. I've always liked what Adam driver has done into series in the fact that he has not been able to be legit the his struggles for legitimacy feel like the struggles of this whole old trilogy. Jj I'm trying to live up to Lucas. I'm trying to be what you loved in the past and knowing that I'm a fake and on some level hating hating myself for putting on the outfit Yeah. This is a big debate. I have with my wife because she just doesn't like Adam driver as an actor. I'm like okay but I love Kylo Ren like that is is the best part of the sequel trilogy that he is the Vader that feels the pull from the light side and yet that he's a cost player in kind of a poser. I I like all that stuff often so I'm glad to see that. Continue here now. He's yeah he's going back into the cost play with his new helmet. He's got his costs play buddies because everyone is upset that the nights ren didn't show up so JJ's I okay. Okay I'll give you that fan service to get the nicer rendu pretty much. Nothing Adam driver and actor. I've really come to respect. He's good where I didn't know him. When episode seven seven came out? Because I didn't watch girls but since then Logan Lucky Black Klansman. You know if you're going to see one atom driver movie that we can go see a marriage story. It's amazing yeah. He's going to win him. The Oscar I think it's his year he's also in the report streaming on Amazon and he was in the Jarmusch film that came out earlier. Like yeah he's having a big moment and he is a really good dramatic actor and I like his interpretation of having the weight on your shoulders of being greater than what you feel you Dr. He's my favorite character in this movie. I think he's the best performance in this movie. He has the biggest art and transformation also in this movie but here in the beginning. I just think he's showing a great physicality with the lightsaber staff. And I'm disappointed that we don't get to see him because because he goes back under the mask for so much you know they say that the tools of an actor a very much there is. I remember hearing Lavar Burton Complain About that now complain but it was a challenge to him. Playing Jordy La Gorge. You had to cover his eyes and so losing Adam drivers very expressive face I. I'm glad it didn't go for the rest of the film. It but we do cut in between Rennes. Return to the dark side to see what's going on Finnish. ooh Baca and Po- are getting information information from US spy. That POW teens alive. They're finding out as we are. They believe they're meeting with a spy. And they find out that like in this world we still don't have the cloud they have to like throw down a DSL cable. Look into our two and some guy named Buluwayo is going to basically get beheaded for passing them along this information. His repayment. Just win the war. And we're in another J.J. Abrams movie people are going to be running flying screaming shooting for ninety minutes of two hours. I felt like it was the first act was just a video game. It's like go to this planet and get this. Now go to this planet and get this and I go to this planet and Dr This mission after mission in like you're playing a video game why can't we just know that he's at this planet. Why do we need to spend all of this time running around to and fro other than the obvious obvious? Answer of it's exciting it's JJ. I had this comment back when we reviewed his first star. Wars film is that there's things that don't make makes sense but there's just running from place to place and shouting and screaming the whole time and it's exciting. If you're not thinking about it and I I found this great quote that Chris Pine said it was on that first star trek film he had to run in and scream at a blue screen and he said to Jj. Can I have a little more time for the scene. I don't know what I'm saying. Can you help me understand what my character saying and JJ's response. This is a direct quote. It doesn't matter you just run on you say it. It's fast and earnestly and urgently as possible and no one is gonNA care. Yeah but isn't that the success of Lucas did the original star wars faster more intense run around the death star Yael weird space dialogue about the technology. And it's fun like it's not great art. It's fun cheers for my childhood. The feelings that film gives me and yeah. I don't need it to make a hundred percent cents. I wanted to be fun but this just feel again. It is planet after planet after planet object in contact after object in contact dancing aliens. It's just all over the place. It's what's referred you too as a shaggy dog story. It's the idea that it really doesn't matter why you end up from frying pan to fire. It's the delight in watching people have have misfortune and pull themselves out. And you're right absolutely when you look at the original trilogy. It was filled with lingo. That didn't have explanation then. They referred to clone wars and things and we can only imagine what all that was. And when Lucas got burdened with having to answer all of that I think that's where star wars got into problems when they had to explain the back story why things happen and where it all came from that's not been the forte. A of the saga at all. No but I agree with you Jacob in a new hope what I love about that movie is. It's almost nonstop action. But it's is always motivated action that matters and a lot of the stuff with Jj from the stupidity of Y spock ejects EXC Kirk to die on an ice planet in the First Star Trek movie to this. Is that a lot of. It isn't motivated. I may not know what a clone war is and I may not know about the tractor. Beams main reactors. But I understand as a child everything that each group of people on the death star trying to do. We're rescuing the princess. I'm making it so we can escape on our ship and while I may not follow every every piece of terminology the motivations and the lines are very clear here. Yeah I also thought about a video game. Because they're getting a message and the message is going to lead to a ship and the ship is going to lead to a dagger. And the daggers. GonNa lead to away finder. That doesn't matter every thing about this movie. That frustrates me is how little any of it matters. And yet how ferverently. Jj is saying it. I we'll give the last Jedi. This when dry Johnston says burn it all down. It doesn't matter like I feel Ryan..

"Because I know and the hair is different types who changed his hair part. It's really very distracting. I will say like Mark Hamill's and actor that I have long enjoyed and I enjoy voice work and I enjoy him when he goes real goofy prone to do but when he was in the last I was before I saw the movie like seeking to be up to this year. And he's so fantastic in that. It is incredible. How good he isn't that? It's easily the best performance ever given no question question the last Jedi. I know what he was doing that one because in this one. He's basically playing a different character. Yeah I I don't know he's just. The tone of that scene is weird. Where's the tone of the Han? Solo scene is like reverential and somber and quite lovely and he says I know feels like they're you know. Aw He's they're trying to make him like cutesy. Yoda play the which infuriated. And they do the whole lifting and the whole point that he didn't live I couldn't leave. The island was because the ship was so badly damaged. He used the door to door for. This is all true and yet he's just like Let's bring it out. Play that track for empire getting the ship it five lots of gas worry array here. I don't even look even. It's all ludicrous but also also. It should be like that seen last July when he got to talk to her. Anyway Luke talks to Iota is is like wonderful like it's it's very exactly and then this he's just like well. That guy was wrong. I was scared of being on the island. Land to who you were by the way she did anyway get Outta here and I'm just like even by the standards of this movie. This is really like frantic and I. I don't know Leah's Lightsaber and you're like oh they had a lightsaber and then they had that little. CG sequence of them having a lightsaber fight that feels like Abrahams being like. I'm sorry I didn't give. You've lay a lightsaber. All Carrie Fisher was alive. I feel bad about like and it's just whole frantic. It feels frantic. It's also enough. I hated the lay alight. Saint the idea. But it's one of those things I'm like are we. We're just getting this now. Like yeah why not interested up introduced in return Aja Eh if anything right but certainly. The Force Awakens with the biggest mistake. The Force Awakens makes not much later. Yeah and of course yes we said there was that sort of concept of like well she the last movie you belong to her okay and the only reason they had leftover footage so they could use for this is originally she supposed to be in the whole first hour of the movie cutting back to her at the base and then he decided the the first time the audience. Caesar should be the first time on Caesar so all the scenes prior to Han seeing her were left. And it's a nice moment when Caesar but it's ultimately a disservice to the character. You're making her conform to what's most exciting for haunt. Yeah I mean. Are you talking about just the Luke seen after that is the palpitation. Showdown and the big space battle. That is like seth all the guys who are when.

"You love to look come on and they're like but but there's still finally explain the knights of rent who are they. I don't know there's like six guys hang on and Ben. Here's here's a real Kobayashi. Meru for you okay. Sure if we as we all know smokes guards the PRAETORIAN guards. The Red Boys. What would you call them? It's over and I call them. We're about this dark and heavy metal boys. They're so crazy. I just have nicer under so cool. I love that one one night. WHO's just get out of that? Answer these questions that were bugging me for years. Who are they hanging out? What kind of rent? Great thank you. Thank you I couldn't infer that the Han Solo scene. I like I think Harrison Ford did a good job. He's a a lot of integrity. can't Hickory when there is a scene is so booking demented even within the manic. Sort of sensibility of this After her big fight with Kylo ray gets in his ship flies. Wise not to see the emperor but to Luke's island. Yeah Echo octo- crashes. The ship sets it on fire with remnants of the Djeddai tree or whatever Na all off screen we cut to her in a frenzy like throwing more wood and ship is it's on fire and then throws her lightsaber at Luke's ghost like hatches hatches. It comes out and he's like no way to treat a lightsaber and I'm like mark what's up locked in two years ago. What J.? Yeah.

"Okay so for the last five okay so a pretty resounding series of knows from the hughniverse all right so I said if This movie is like going so quickly if they had instead broking looking it broke it up into two parts and obviously I know it's there sort of constricted to doing it in three. Let's just say that they were able to do that. They've decided that there's too much movie here. So it's like nine part one part one and part two but but I don't think the story is demanding that it needs to be the two parts. I think it feels like you're watching. Every different option in bander snatch all important go like you're seeing everything they ever considered could may be fit into this movie and I think a lot of it is just like out here save that. Put that somewhere else. Make that spinoff put that in a comic. Put It in another script. Whatever it is? There's so many things in this movie that have nothing to do with the story that has been set up with these characters in the last two films things we actually WanNa see paid off. And even if you're saying that a hassle fill the obligations nations of the other fucking previous films there are other things on top of nothing to do with anything interest. I was I was just thinking rubber for school. Just up. My Pal Abu I don't know yeah I'm I'm I you can't help but think about like the other. You know big franchises that like ended this year and you know the avengers is something that like how this impossible task of all these movies and I obviously I I like they killed the knows I and so then I think with this movie the whole time you're waiting for Palestine to die in like this. No tension the stakes don't feel The world doesn't feel big enough in a weird sort of away when they kill palpitation. They go back to like their one jungle. I'm like who's even in charge now like other other planets somehow because Landau just blitzed enough to people and he's like this happening and that too. Okay okay. Great Selana Paul revered is like the best. Guess I'm going with that the other thing I was thinking about was game of thrones in like something the Ed moment that always sticks with me is like Benny Offer Weiss after after spoilers. Danny's dragon coming. Okay and okay look developed the NFL before when she loses a first draft especially she's forgotten about the earn fleet point is she they say at the end of the episode like we. We knew this whole whole fucking thing. We knew that the episode would end with that. Dragon's eye opening restrict. Yeah Yeah I dragging that dies. We knew that it was going to end with a dragon's I like Zombie Ice Dragon and then to me that was like such a fundamental flaw of. We don't care about all the shit that's going to get you you to that point with that. We will eventually get there that we're going to do all of this fucking Zagan and I always. It reminds me of like when I was in high school. fucking hated physics. I was very bad at it. Yeah yeah it was bad but if if you look in the back of Laker physics like textbooks you can like find the answers to like all the even or odd question or at least my school. It could figure that out. We'll Chit Yell. Just do that but then you now I would write. The answer is but then you still had to like show your work and you couldn't do that and I will. Yeah no I I got all the answers and then I did the work. I thought maybe correctly I remember. Remember my physics teacher. Mr Shchukin pulled me aside and he was like why this is all wrong. Why do you still have the right answer and like all this work is wrong and I was like like because I hate math? Don't make me do this. But it was because I wanted to learn built up with getting to the point and I think. Jj was so concerned with getting getting to this ending in you know ending Palpa teen and making the skywalker. Family name like became so much more important that he didn't focus on any any of these characters. I JUST WANNA say. I wish you'd issued a spoiler warning because you've ruined. Both game of thrones and most physics textbooks now I had not caught up to either one yet. Game of thrones tomorrow after all the great buzz. This feels like a good time and I was GONNA say.

"Categorically when I do it so out at all number four allowed the Harney mandatory and you've seen all seven houses one more to come seven eight now there have been seventy one more Love it love and love it. Do you remember last year when we were recording episode and we were like well. This is unquestionably the worst episode. The worst we ever ever recorded and we're like the embarrassed ashamed deleted. Some people were like great episode. We were like. Do we not know anything. This is objectively our worst episode thousand last year anyway. Mandatory there were so many moments in this film in terms of being overstuffed. And maybe I'm just spoiled now because man delorean is giving so much what I kind of want the future stars storytelling to be which is more like we're in the world it doesn't and have to be about fucking sky walkers it's a little more earthy this episode can slow down and for thirty minutes. It's just about this one thing about this place or this one dynamic or just one character Terry. No Bobby Kennedy has a grown son. I do because he was a PA on vinyl. I know because he was in the Middle Oriented Boston in space. Chicken hauling. It's very honky bill Burr also in the mandatory lot of Comedians Bill. Burr was actually wonderful animated. He's actually it has and the gun jokes lead me and my personal I'm all right. It is this thing though where I love how behavioral the man Laurean is I like that. There's this weird eared like Seventies. Hang Out vibe. It does feel like a seventy s western shore. They like ride into town in like something happens like it's like the incredible. It's like an old the old home show. What's it's here deal this week? Not this hyper serialized massive story. They're telling even though now. The plans are starting to come together. What's coming together? Remember all the POWs we met. They're all going to be back for one final curtain call and like Sprang. When something like this story? Bliss comes into the film or Janet comes into the film or the idea of C.. Three PEOs memory getting re centered any of if these things in the movie I just kept on going like this feels like a mandatory in episode That is now being smushed into five minutes of a two hour and twenty minute film. Janet get around spin off so but when that's the idea I guess I'm well I mean Landau is literally like Oh that's interesting underwear from what if you had a spin off movie but no no what Landau I think Billy Dee Williams can't deliver a line without saying leg without it seeming like he wants to have sex with you. He's like well. Let's find out where you're from window. Jesus your grandfather yeah relax. I was so distracted by the fact that it was clearly a sequel like Naomi. Aki Go for it on Janet. Aki Right into her. She doesn't seem she's like let me explain everything about who I am. And what my deal is I turn to and I went. I like that. That's a cool idea idea. It is now just being yelled at me for five minutes because the film doesn't have time to actually characterize her through behavior and through dramatic attic action like everyone needs to announce everything they're doing and who they are and where they stand and how they fit into everything. I mean even degree of like Richard E grant who is so perfectly cast. Here where you're like of course wouldn't obvious choice to play fucking creepy British stuff for help eighteen like original fan. But he's it's lighter. I mean fifteen. Well if you do the math I guess it's like what's Rashidi grand now sixty. He's the means he was like thirty. And Return of the Jedi. Or whatever okay but this is one of the most. That's the thing he's like when he says it it's like said with such important so what he was like a lieutenant like okay and it's like this is exactly the wrong amount of information for me. I want you to just be creepy stuff shirt and just give me that fucking attitude. I want you to actually have a thing that has relevance to the rest of the movie. Just be like. Hey don't forget about me. People are GonNa Comics about me someday. Let me just tell you my deal. Thank you very much. That's my time dropping out wasn't right. Yeah because I don't care about and I just felt that we almost every time a new character actor was introduced. Her new concept is introduced. Like oh this looks cool. I understand the kernel of the idea right. It also feels like a movie that was on like such a speeding train in terms of lake. AAC truly by the time that Solo came out. This film was too close to production and they probably realized sized. Oh fuck maybe we should pull the brakes on everything and not have to hit specific like sort of mandated dates. Maybe we should listen to the last one that become what they need to be right. But this just feels like sewri Bliss Janna Richard e grant all these fucking things. Do are all just like vestiges of like a blue sky despise in disguise brainstorming session with a bunch of fun ideas. They're putting on a whiteboard and then they're like yeah. I think we have room for them. We can fit. We can fit that in and then the movie is just moving forward and Ford and Ford certain they understand Oh there's not actually room to service any this deliciously keep it in. It's just like a thing in there which feels to me like frozen to where they're a bunch of things where you're like like that clearly must be some other thing that at some earlier point commenced. Here's the difference right right right the other thing. Of course. This movie has the problem that you're describing the other problem it has that is also like but then let's not forget the emperor you know like it's looking backwards at the same time wages here Lando. ooh That's all I care about is fees four Central Care Alabama's characters. You did such a good job. Investing me in them and that may all mostly just seem Mike. There's a running from place to place pose. The one who actually has a little to do. Yeah I think because he didn't cut as much in the first two especially because he hasn't had time with them as has like a tree and I appreciate that loved to look upon. God Yes it's fine. It's good the problem. Is that raise already. Burdened with Kiro Quest. So she's kind of just looking in the distance anytime there hanging yes. She walks off in the middle of the fucking desert. has like this sort of half story. I I think about the subpoenas for sensitive. That's fine and this has been like since away awakens. I figured that was what caused. I've always figured occurred that the force was awakening in that movie. That's what you know. Pauses him and of course it was part of. Jj's trick that movie. which is he was trying to? You know the marketing and everything was making. Can you think well I the hero. He's the he's GonNa have to Lightsaber. And then the movies big trick which people I guess sort of forget about these remember raise the heroes the raise the jets. But I'm just like in return of the Jedi. When lay getting a little foresee like it's true Finn but good hint at it but that's fine? FEELS DISRESPECTFUL RESPECTFUL TO FORCE AWAKENS in a weird way to me is that he is not trusting that we wanna see the culmination of these characters that he created these actors that he cast encourage Wjr to own these roles and the movie instead needs to go like not. Don't worry about that. They're all part of a bigger thing in the bigger things. been going on forever which distributes it. That's exactly what it is. Isn't that sort of a fundamental problem. He wasn't concerned with concluding their individuals. I don't know what each of these characters are is. Immune this move which even if you look at it from the grand scale of the prequels to the end of this movie. How is the SKYWALKER? The story about this Skywalker name shirt beginning middle and end than like. That's what he was aiming for. But like I hate the ending so much I a ah but just that it it. It's not about raining just about the French. I just felt shallow. Actually haven't seen which you don't need to see is the frozen to is like we're gonNA explain it Erin. Tell everything and I'm like you can explain what I don't know what you're talking about. And they're like they're act- frozen to his acting like it's frozen eight he finally. We're going to dig into some of the law and I'm like I in the other grandparents. They get intense over. Haven't you ever wanted to know about their grandparents. I've I've always wanted to learn how like mermaids exist in the seat and that's why the sequel to the Little Mermaid should be no. Yeah that's weird like what you're telling me sounds look I'm open the whole frozen bucks right now. I'm waiting for Sunday going to the unknown. I'm also just ten comedy points but I'm also so waiting for like there's GonNa be some messy teller about what happened with that movie because clearly something we'd have seen something weird happening and there's a lot of songs on the cutting for we talked about it on the soundtrack cuddly Grammy Tangent Tangent. Here quickly. Okay and this is the focus tangent this is a focus stores tangent. But I want to lead us down a an alley where you go ahead you you are. Here's your tangent of reward. That's we've talked about many times before. Lucas always contends. No the film about this there are about heroes journeys there about this. It's a soap opera. A study done that kids movies right. But the thing the Kathleen Kennedy Very smartly identified that I think has been the key to trying to reclaim star. Wars is when he offered her the company she said. Look I'm not knocking do it unless I can figure out what Star Wars Weird power is an. I've never been able to identify it and George Wendt. Don't worry I know what it is. I figured it up and gave her the same spiel. He's giving all the time when he's explaining why people don't understand the PREQUELS and why they're wrong and she was like that's not that's not that's not he's like it is it's about this percents best. She's it's not it's not. It's not like hours of them meeting like this and she was like George. What was going on in your life when you wrote? So we've talked about so I just some resetting spirits and he says of course while my father owned a hardware store and I was expected to take over the hardware store and it didn't excite me at all and it felt like a very very boring life and I imagine that there's something greater out there for me and ice-covered film in that got to be my escape and I wrote my own destiny. She went great. That's what it's about stories about not wanting to become your father basic elemental level. That's what's about he said No. It's about story talks about the hero's journey right right and in a way that is like the terminator two trick. I think the brilliant piece of setup in Force Awakens is oh the thing to do here to tap into the core elemental feeling of star. Wars is to invert the previous thing that rather than it being. What if your father? It was the greatest villain in the history of the galaxy. How hard would you fight to make sure you didn't become him that it's the opposite? Of what if your dad was the coolest hero of all time right and what would you do to try to get out from the shadow. So we're talking about the pilots now. Because he is I agree with you. The one of the most compelling Arken working away and it's the Terminator Second Movie Flip It. Then he gets a terminator three and it's like what is it now. Sometimes it's good sometimes. These bad was it now. He's a different bad guy. But you a an old man all this stuff where it's like you can only mirror it. There's an on off switch. There's not a third position and they throw in the third position in this one. Which is ray which is what? If you're a grandparent was a bad guy. Didn't know it so simultaneously. You're trying not to become your bad for but you're trying to convince this interesting empire we don't need to see it again. It's the same thing we've gone. Here's like here's the ARC that they had set up the last movie. Yeah Ray is this abundantly undented powerful new creature of the forest yet. I write Kylo on the other. Hand is burdened by all his legacy stuff and their bond their bond. Yeah is the thing. That's pulling and pushing both of.

"Come on they'd be wearing all imperial guard wears out they'd be like spilling out because it's too small never fully explained who's running running those ships they do say like we're GonNa have to work and then a Lotta kids to grow up and so yeah I I hate being picky. Hey but this movie is giving you so much information you do kind of start to think on it and I tell you what's going through my head right. Yeah go ahead. This looks like you're having crisis commented on the fact that I suddenly looked very sad. I'm staring off into the distance right and I truly am having this like minor minor existential crisis right now okay. You are Griffin numerous over. Or what. Okay everybody's strapping other other about star specifically where Griffin said. He couldn't sleep for days. What's up what's troubling and my brand is strong? I'm just I'm thinking thinking right Thomas flattening right now. Okay and I sit here at this table. I look at four my favorite people in the world. This family we've chosen is the fourth of its the little what's the little guy over for myself. My accent which is also very much untrue. I'm looking at three people I love and also I'm in this room okay. Yeah this is the family. I've chosen this thing that we've made that I'm very proud of okay. This thing that came out of our friendship and having a separate relationship US meeting youth through Ben like all this this thing right that all stems out of initially this genuine love. We had for sitting down and talking about one hundred hundred walking into the prequel. Your and just having fun like riffing on it and being silly lick hocken about gorge. Monikers do all day do this for six year. Like Captain America Fighting Ray George. Lucas could do this all day. And I'm just sitting here as her having this conversation conversation and I had this thought of I find no joy in having not to some degree of beautiful touching moment in the fans. He's like. Wow that's really nice but truly it. Is this thing where I don't know if it is that the particular killer ways in which this movie is frustrating. Or if it's just been sort of star wars overlord over lewd or if it is sort of the way way that the discourse around star wars built Chur and the way that society not society but I feel like the discourse around film in general has become so much more the the I want to come up with definitive explaining why this thing is bad. Yeah which is an uninteresting debate coward I can prove the point. This is why on in arguably this thing is. She's not interesting. It's fine for people to feel differently about different things and we have somewhat made disagree backs doc off of doing yield of Corey. That's sure so. I think as time has gone on the shows evolved. We tried to find. It's become something else what I try to be. And we agree grew. The opposite of is the cinema since type thing where it's like see. Don't you see here are the problems and here is why it's bat. Bat with those right right felt so radical when it came out where it's sitting down explaining everything but now it's just like the most exhausting eh cinema sends and all of this shit and like all of the copycats have just become the like. You know like someone tweeted at Ryan Johnson. Last night I made the mistake of for four seconds logging on twitter after I'd seen the movie and someone had like fucking screen cab this like. Seo Did you see your where it was just like Ryan. I have finally come with the definitive argument for why your films disrespectful Luke Skywalker and he was just like an I disagree I disagree. What are we supposed to say? There's no you're not gonNA pass a law here intact. Maybe add some new appendixes disrespecting of Luke Skywalker a crime illegal. Be Luke skywalker untouchable. Do you remember like a year and a half ago when we are meeting with someone who works at Vulture and the film had been out for. Lash out I've been out for almost a year. That plant point sure and he. Can you believe like ten months later I still am fielding pitches for. Hey just want to reach out. I come up with a definitive of explanation of why last year I was bad. This is so crazy to this. Argument is continuing nine months later and multiple years later. It's like that has become so exhausting that I find no joy in explaining why the stores movie that I don't like is I get that I get a lot but it's also just like yeah okay but like the Internet just being. I don't know cutting back elections happening. What it's just AH voting for no I know? I know.

"The trilogy and then you know the last jedi i and all that and i'm like wow there's no way luke wins there's no way luke wins like not a chance but then when i started going into the non canon and i'm like oh my gosh look say lucic an amazing bad ass especially the older he gets the more bad assery he he gets as well i'm like that's my only chance that was my only hope so to speak to get luke even have a chance of beating spiderman other than that movie version spiderman luke skywalker sorry not a chance just i'm just saying especially whoever thought had the great idea of writing loose skywalker the way they did in the last jedi really i'm still not cool with that at all yeah i've i've been very conflicted about it depending on the day my opinion might change ultimately i was sad that he had to go why would you have someone fight so hard come out the torius in say you can't kill me i'm not even here and then within five seconds he dies because after victoria's it totally wrong placement of nj the technique but killed him the force d'appel ganger take me he's used that in the legend stories that you quoted with no adverse effects not even getting tired right so with that being said you know i i love luke skywalker loves spiderman but yes no way no way luke skywalker comes out victorious just not gonna happen so with that being said another great debate very cool great job as always jay and ray.

"You know that's the large camel looking vehicle we saw in empire strikes back that was in close range in fire directly at luke skywalker the blast couldn't get through a personal shield lucrative around him by using the force and then moments later luke use the poorest to crush and completely destroyed the vehicle now again i'm going to quote a novel luke skywalker and the shadows of mentor one more time after a large ship takes off and it's about it's going to hyperspace hyperspace luke uses a forced to catch it and then hold the ship in place so even with the lesser ability and the course with that why couldn't move use the force to grab a hold of spiderman at a distance keep them pinned to the ground or against something else or even just put them in the air and keep them there and the use of force choke or simply use the force to crush him in fact why would luke skywalker have to even physically touch spiderman at all and by the way jake who defeated spiderman the first time who was firemen's i defeat and how did they do it okay hang on here we go here we go i really i really feel like doctor octopus handed him his first real who what are you thinking of go ahead that's exactly right it was dock and it was an amazing spiderman number three and with dhaka dizzy he pins spiderman and just held them aloft and kind of pin them in place using his metal arms and beat him senseless while he was held in place and then tossed him through a window where he fell many floors to the ground barely conscious so doc ach can do that why can it luke skywalker possibly the most powerful force user of all do the same if not much worse oh that's a false equivalency because you're comparing physical strength connecticut energy with a physical object like the arms with tele connecticut power and a spiderman frankly has faced way more powerful tele connectix i'll give you a great example the phoenix five these are five individuals who had the phoenix force at one time now they were kicking spiderman's ass because the phoenix force is a godlike level power.

"Ray what are your thoughts on that public that's not me publishing something doesn't make it cannon they put a label on those books james is referring to now that label reads legends which is a nice way of saying this does not happen this never happened there is one history for luke skywalker and this is not it but it sounds like revisionist history no another word let's say wrote these books originally and then decided it was yeah well it was originally bantam books in one thousand nine hundred ninety who started the expanded universe with the throne trilogy those went through about two thousand five i'm sorry it went through about two thousand twelve and ended with the crucible once that was ended the star wars expanded universe ended and disney took over and said those books did not happen they are wiped from our continuity and will not be acknowledged again so why did they do that they did that so they would be fresh to tell their own stories like a lot of the ones i'm actually going to mention on my side i'm only going to cannon luke skywalker stuff okay so yeah ray this is a decision on your part so for example you know i get i get where what what jay is saying what's going on with disney right now without insulting disney they're creating a narrative that supports their initiatives and their bottom line so they had this i think revisions histories perfectly of saying it they took away all that stuff they said they took it away because it wouldn't support the sales of tickets future films future shows and what have you and merchandise the way they wanted to i mean you could argue argue why that's the point is it didn't happen number one it's definitely revisionist history it's definitely them setting a narrative meaning disney setting a narrative like james said to push their branding forward which is fine.

"Have been a much more interesting story if it were about any one who wasn't named luke skywalker uh i hate this this really let you down mmhmm oh enormously i don't i do not i think it's an interesting story it's an interesting way to create drama contention what what i've spent the last several days doing is trying what what i said this in in sort of my opening statement i trying to draw a line between the person i saw in the original trilogy the person who in a went from farm boy two jet i master and then extrapolate from everything i knew about luke skywalker and create the person who i saw in this movie and i i just don't have it i don't i don't see i based on everything i knew about luke skywalker if if if if if we were to just divorce ourselves from this movie for a second and i said uh these several things happen you moved far more becomes jet i confronts evil uh overcomes restores in a balanced to the force and you know light triumphs over dark and that there is a did horrible tragedy within the family uh and then i said all right that's the story of this guy and then i said all right flash forward to 30 years from now and here is a very similar situation based on everything you know about the character what would this character do and the luke skywalker of the new trilogy.
