Energy efficiency can help make housing affordable

"Many U., S. cities are in dire need of affordable housing and what is available often needs repair. But making buildings more energy efficient can help. Chaining out the window skulking resupply installation and route the building changing out the back system That Khalil Shaheed, a senior policy advocate with the natural resources defense council he says, making efficiency improvements can lower utility bills for renters, and if the utilities are paid by a landlord that can help them avoid raising the rent. But. Many building owners lacked the upfront cash required to invest in energy efficiency improvements. So she heat says it's important to have utility and government programs to help cover the costs and he says those programs should be paired with agreements that prevent apartment building owners from flipping the upgraded units to a higher market rate. If we can't support those owners that provide affordable housing to low income families in multifamily units where taking a huge step at a huge burden off of those building owners and allowing those buildings to stay and to maintain affordability. And at the same time providing residents with safer and more comfortable homes.

The article by the Anna West is called Hillary's hypersonic missile gap from 2017. There are two huge takeaways from this article. Number one. A lot of American companies were being aggressively pushed, Shall we say, shall we say to join the scope of the project in Russia? One of those companies were conveniently donors to the Clinton foundation, too. Beard. You know Clinton after Bill and Hillary, not George Clinton. It's got a screen shot one from Diana's piece. That's three and a half years in is fantastic. It's calm. I. Think he's attractive to so many people because we don't behave like a charity. Now, that is any way to denigrate chows as a child. She's fantastic. Brilliant things Supplement stuff that arguably government should be doing but did have have real profound pup calm is a charity but we behave and communicates in ways which may be more like a a modern brand. So we communicate through music and comedy and football, and running and cycling, and or those kind of things which we tap into popular culture So we've seen huge growth in the last three years most notably in the use of helpline, which is which is more than double. So it's a brilliant privileged to be able to run the thing.

The practice of anti racism, diversity, equality and belonging needs to evolve and be lifelong. Undoubtedly, there's a lot of work to be done work that is being further complicated by a deadly virus. That has forced us to change the way we deliver our services work that is being threatened by a diminished, diminishing level of donations and other refugees Dreams, which could translate into a diminishing level of service. We were talking about those earlier that there's there's a lot of news outlets that have a A queer corner. Yeah, that kind of focus. Ah! We're confident, Poised Huffington Post's Queer Voices Rand That's been around for a while. Right now, it feels like there's more and more happening in Forbes. We were talking about Forbes earlier and just suddenly, all this Good queer content. Yes, being well, a cz we had mentioned in Ah previous show. I forget if it was last week or before that, how on Facebook, So much of the representation of transgender folks is Coming from websites of a negative impression. Yeah, folks, it's and generally speaking, there's been Hard times for a lot of the especially print publications. Ah of LGBT Focus The Blade, Washington Blade and others. You know, Bay Area reporter etcetera. And so it's really refreshing to see Maur LGBTQ representation and more news stories being published. Not just from the same old publications, the advocate and out, etcetera, right? We LGBT Q nation etcetera. But other publication sources also All right, ringing of sorts. Yeah, at least what they founded The study that you're referencing, um anti transgender Facebook content shared by right wing news sources generated more engagement than content from pro trans or neutral sources combined. Nintendo Direct Mini: What We Learned from the Partner Showcase

"Nintendo surprised everyone late last night by announcing that it would be airing a Nintendo direct mini partner showcase early this morning. The surprise announcement last night read on July twentieth. We'll debut the first Nintendo direct mini partner showcase a series focused on titles from our development and publishing partners will share a few updates on a small group of previously announced Hashtag. Nintendo switch games? The quick window between the announcement of the thing and airing the thing. And specifically pointing out that it would only cover previously announced games lowered my expectations to the floor, but there were at least a few surprises. Here's what they shared. I the direct started with a cove in nineteen disclaimer, saying basically that the future is uncertain, and everything could change including release dates, but then they made their first announcement with was planned DLC for a game whose full title is cadence of high rule crypt of the neck, dancer, featuring the legend of Zelda. The game released last year, but it will get three new DLC packs, which will release through October. The first pack adds new characters to the game. IMPA shadow link and Shadow Zelda and then characters named Aria and Frederick who I believe our original characters. I fancy myself a bit of his elda. Didn't immediately recognize those characters D second pack will add thirty nine new songs to the game. The third pack, which seems the most substantial Ed's a whole new story with new songs where you can play as skulk the tags from yours mask who can change masks to adopt new abilities? The character pack is available today in the other packs will be available later with all the pacts eventually coming out by October, and then the game will also receive a physical release with all the DLC bundled in one box on October twenty third. I played and beat cadence of Jairo Crypto the neck road answer featuring diligent of Zelda, but ultimately liked the soundtrack a lot more than I liked the actual game. I would go so far as to say I love the soundtrack, so I am excited to hear all the new songs. I don't know that I am really eager to actually play the game more, but I am also such as Zelda soccer that I probably will. The next two announcements weren't really announcements so much. The Game Rogue Company was shown which looks like a pretty. Pretty unspectacular third person online shooter with cyberpunk sort of theme. It didn't look bad by any means that it just didn't do much to stand out. Same goes for the next game. WWE TO CAPE battlegrounds. There was some new gameplay and we saw some wrestlers who were likely well compensated to show how excited they were about the game. They were playing, but there wasn't much. That had not already been shared the mini, direct and strong, though with two big atlas announcements. Shimagami ten say one, which was basically Shimagami Tennessee, three and Japan. Is Getting remastered for release on switch next year. I would love some help here in the form of a correction because I find the Shin Montgomery ten say series to be pretty confusing as it has all devolved into different spinoffs like persona, which itself has all kinds of spin offs. I was always under the impression that knocked turn was spinoff as well, but I guess it is part of the mainline series, and this rerelease will have the number three in the title, even though it did not have a three in its North American title when it originally released in two thousand four. In any case you know where it belongs in the Shin, Mugabe cannon really isn't. All that portent the important thing is that it is generally considered to be one of the best, if not the Best Shimagami, ten say game that isn't called Persona and it's actually the entry that I play the most. It has some MON elements to it with demon collecting, and when it originally released, it featured Dante from devil may cry. Suggest character which is a cool idea. I'm curious if the rerelease will keep that Dante Cameo. It also just has a great art style to it and I'm happy to see it getting a visual overhaul for the switch release. It is coming spring twenty twenty one after that a trailer was shown for Shimagami ten. Say Five a game we have known about since two thousand seventeen, but this was the first in some time. The trailer didn't reveal much. A teenager looks like they're given some kind of demonic choice and I don't know that they make the right one. The game is coming in twenty twenty one, but the trailer didn't anymore specifics than that. I had low expectations going into this thing and they were mostly met, but I was surprised by the nocturnal announcement. That was very cool. The Internet seems generally annoyed that Nintendo has not made any big summer announcements and that with paper Mario Animal Crossing having been released. It really doesn't seem like they have any big games for the rest of the year. which is true, but the weird thing is. Is I. Don't know that it really matters to Nintendo. Twenty twenty can kind of just be a low key year for them. Because animal crossing was just that big of a hit. It feels like they are in no rush to push anything out. Because everyone is just going to keep buying animal crossing anyway, they can barely keep up with demand for the switch consoles as it is. Now with all that being said though I think Nintendo kind sees the cancellation of e three as a blessing in terms of how it likes to announce Games paper Mario was announced and released within a few months. And I think that's how Nintendo would always prefer to do it. Keep the window between announcement and release small, but e three kind of forces them to make these big proclamation announcements all piled up on top of each other and share things many months before the popular November release window with E. Three out of the way though I think Nintendo is taking advantage and will make individual announcements for games. Just shortly before they actually release. There is that rumored Super Mario collection that will gather a bunch of three D Mario Games maybe nintendo will detail it in a dedicated direct, and then release it within a month, or so closer to November, and maybe in the unlikely scenario that breath of the wild to is coming this year. They will do the same thing. have a focused dedicated direct for the game, and then it will come out shortly after or maybe as I alluded to earlier, Nintendo will just look at animal crossings absurd sales. Do a round of socially distant high fives, and just push everything in originally had planned for twenty twenty into twenty twenty one.

"ESPN Chicago APP. So here's Doc Rivers on the Snitch Hotline and what he expects that happen in the coming weeks and months. Turn in LeBron Yesterday I'm turning in. You know, pop today. I'm trying to turn all these guys in. I think it's phenomenal. We're going to be the only team left when I'm done with this hotline thing, so I know you know, it's funny. I know about it, but I I don't think it's a problem at all. I think it's good, like way do you know this is not some normal think over. It obviously is not only that you can get sick, but you could get other people sick. And so this is very important for all of us. We want to do our jobs. So I think having a hotline, I guess that's what they're calling. I guess that's important snitch line. I made a joke yesterday. I'm Patrick Beverly. And I just saw idea LeBron get an uber just saying, you know the one thing that I don't think he's been really reported. But if you kind of think about it, it makes sense. Disney world has cameras everywhere everywhere. So like, even if you think you're trying to get away with something that you're going to get caught doing whatever you're not supposed to be doing because the entire theme park has cameras everywhere, you know, just like big Brother's always watching us to begin with, like you're walking downtown in a metropolitan city. Those cameras catching you doing BU every everywhere so likely watching you on that Disney campus. I'm telling you that, Marcie exactly. And when you're in the park, you start to realize like how they're hidden, you know, because in Disney and like they try and make everything blend into the the atmosphere, so so carbon yesterday, I sent out an email to the draft. I thought it was important because we're all coming into work, and we're all trying to keep each other safe. We've kind of made like our own safety bubble here against Kobe, 19 here at the station at ESPN 1000 we have Things to clean all this protocol in place to try and keep us healthy, so we can do good shows here on ESPN 1000 throughout the pandemic, So I set up the ESPN 1000 snitch Hotline. We I launched it yesterday and I sent out the email. We have a few phone calls yesterday, complaining about different things they've seen here around the office. I have a few more more calls here. If we go to the answering machine, the ESPN 1000 snitch hotline. Let's go. The first message. Yeah, I'm calling in I'm a worker here at ESPN and I've got issues with a teammate. I'm back in my office, usually doing my work in the morning and he keeps coming back at odd times and telling me these weird stories like yesterday he comes back and starts telling me about how Cheryl Crow hit out of the one time I don't know what's going on. Comes back clean. It's later than he ever told me some story about Kevin Garnett. What's going on with the cover and then, like, you know, trying to get work done, and he comes back and starts patently about a story about 1/3 of its key when he was a panel. It's just really strange. He he's he's doing a lot of weird things with Telling stories, and it's recording me from getting my work done, so I just wanted to know what you know what's going on. And maybe we can get him to start coming back and bugging me. OK, thank you. Whoever left that message. I don't think he's worried about getting the role in the cove in Verona. He's just worried that this guy's bothering him too much. And you can't get his work done. That's a different kind of snitch Hotline. This isn't an HR situate. This isn't harassment situation. HR For that way. Appreciate we don't want Teo. Say anything bad about those snitching. Wanna allow an open forum so they can let us know. In case there are safety protocols here on ESPN. 1000 there Not being meant We encourage it. Yeah, So it's the ESPN 1000 snitch Hotline. Ah, we have a second message. Let's let's take a listen. Okay. We're reluctant to do this because I don't want to be a snitch. But I thought it was appropriate. I'm not gonna live saw a Chinese late fifties, will do, describing his follicly challenged With his shirt off. Basically admiring himself in the mirror, checking out some sort of tattoos or new tattoos E out, And I just thought that violated both the OSHA rules to hit the rules and all the rules common sense. Common decency. I don't want to see another naked guy, half naked guy in the men's room during the covert out outbreak, so I just thought I was I would do that Sylvie out, but we were trying to keep the names off of this. That's why this tip line is important. Actually, we've got to catch the half naked man in the time of Corona virus. Posing and looking at his tattoos, boy, all the indicators kind of point to one guy. I mean, I don't want to say anything. I'm not here to point fingers well, and that's why this tip line is important. I do I do like the like. He was trying to disguise his voice on that last call, Right? Don't want receiver at Boston College, ESPN 1000 snitch hotline, and we For today. We actually do have one last message. Let's take a listen. What? Hey, next line. I got this bald guy in a trip to Jersey. Keep Telling me that he's a bush inspector for skulking, and he keeps checking out my bushes in my trees and everything. I need some help over here. I'm not even in Sochi. And then he's got a big thing that he's cutting my bushes and he keeps yelling at the bushes to pick that. I got to go and check this guy out. All right, So there it is. Sounds like a personal property issue that he's dealing with. I don't know. I'm not sure it's for the snitch Hotline with Verona. I don't know. But hey, let's say so. That's hard. ESPN 1000 Snitch Hotline will keep it up all week. Just making sure that the safety protocols or met here at ESPN 1000..

Can you pretend that we're friends really quickly because I this person's following me. Just don't be afraid to rope in others that looks safe have clean shirts. You know right this. We just get right into this what you're also add that. I even got my scaredy cat sister and my boyfriend who hates most things into FM. I guess thank you you those two. Those are the victory people guys who aren't interested and women who are like. I can't listen to high. I thank you so when my older brother was a teenager. He was a regular again and it was always getting into some sort of mostly harmless trouble one day in two thousand eight. When my brother was a junior in high school he decided to stay home when my parents sister and I went on a little Lake Day a few hours away <hes> just when we were about to get ice cream. My mom got a call from my end. This is what I heard what he's where is he okay. He did what Oh my God okay. We'll be there too few hours so it turns out my seventeen year old weather and a group of his pals were hanging out in one of of their female friends. Nice ass wealthy neighborhoods filming a movie in this movie. They were pretending to kidnap the girl. Well girlfriend had been taking acting acting since she was eight and pulled out all her girl they dragged her into the car kicking and screaming and then sped away the girl's neighbor saw this and immediately called nine one to report her. Oh kidnapping shout shout out to the neighbor for calling nine one one and asking questions later while the police wasted no time put out an amber alert and shut down the highways. They pulled over my brother and his friends and arrested them. Oh my they brought them to jail and we picked him up after we finished our ice cream looking back on it now even even though it was a pain in the ass for my idiot brother and my parents. I'm super glad that neighbor took action when she thought she saw something happening and the police reacted so quickly and took it so seriously if my brother was a real kidnapper they would have saved a girl's life. I don't think they're ever charges filed against my brother and his friends but I was only in the forest grade so I was dumb. He's thirty now and still basically dumb teenager. He hasn't kidnapped anymore. Girls so we are seeing big improvements stays sexy and always tell your neighbors before you kidnap doc your friends shelby shells. Larrea and identify having a troubled older brother also I. I wonder if they still use that but it. I bet it was great. Seriously kids in high school who make movies on their own are so cool. I think wait a second that was from Shelby Tarantino in the beginning Louisville okay. Here's another one ready. I'm just going to tell you it says. EMT Not Story Great Howdy Howdy Howdy my great grandmother was murdered by serial killer Donald Harvey which inspired my lifelong love of true crime. I'm well. He'll timidly landing me in career field. I am in today. This has nothing to do with that by. Oh that's just her opening. Yep <hes> an emt not and Morgan employees. I have lots of stories from both of these but the ones that keep me up at night the ones from the morgue noche but <hes> I have seen it all but my favorite is about what I accidentally brought home from an autopsy. This summer was disgustingly hot as we all know which lead to some particularly unique circumstances for us at the morgue contrary contrary to popular belief more are actually pretty clean and we use enough bleach that it doesn't smell too horrible so when I walked in the door and immediately gagged. I knew it had to be bad. We had a case in which is something on us too but what I wasn't expecting was all the little critters during the autopsy. A few hundred maggot started dropping to the floor okay gross but no big deal. Here's where it hits the fan. A fucking mouse leaps out of the body bag and onto the floor. I can handle anything except for rodents. I built to the other side of the room and the little mouse's else's darting around searching for a place to hide. So where does you decide to go right towards me. Great thankfully my shrieks of fear scared it off. Can you imagine being a morgue worker and an an T and and you've seen so much shit. You're scared of my that's what I was GONNA say. Just everyone has their thing yeah. Everyone has their thing for some people. It's like I don't understand how you could would ever do it. Autopsy and then the other people like I don't understand how you could ever look at amount yeah. I like that one. There's clearly a right and wrong thankfully including my shrieks of fear scared off and it runs under the door and into the supply closet after the day is done. I come home and take off my shoes expecting to shower and eat cheetos to only to find that somehow a maggot got under my shoe covers and into my shoes fortunate leaves only one but after the mouse I was just over it to make a long story short. I panic over little critter pathetic. I know are pathologists. Eventually finds the mouse a week later who sadly had the ironic fate of dying at the morgue. Oh stay sexy and adopt up catch to keep the mice away from Cincinnati. Wow Tear at thank you for doing the work you'd yes. It's important. We don't mean to make fun of you or the little your fear now we you're brave in many way it's ironic. It's ironic and Alaria if you were we'd say to your face yet because it's cute and you yeah no it yeah okay now. This goes almost in the other direction say sexy and think twice before you call the police okay right all right a lot of things times entertain entertain in that episode make judgments. Yeah Judgment Calls Halos. I grew up in Claremont in Western Australia and as such had a natural obsession with serial killers in in fact both my parents were witnesses to the first disappearance in the Claremont serial killer as they were exiting club. Bayview known back then as club Baseb- you when then she was taken. Oh my God why they were there. When I was about seventeen I was home alone when I heard a knock on the door to police officers had come by to show local residents wants photos of possible suspects in recent attack of a fellow officer at Clermont train station. I had a very long look at the faces and said I would get in touch saw anyone and who looked suspect nearby cut to the next day. I'm on the train going to work and I see two older men across from me who I recognize immediately. I changed carriages is and make a frantic call to police. The two assailants are on the train heading to Perth city. I get off the train in the city and they're easily eighty police officers storming the platform ready to take down the

"Your highway exit which is the last one available before this actual crash scene. Now, they have the left lane blocked, and they're starting to work the traffic out through there. Now, I'm not I'm starting to wonder if they're just allowing the traffic that was trapped between the closure, right? Is that right that they couldn't after the bef- before k and they've been out there for a couple of hours. So I'm wondering how that would drive you crazy and impossible to go backwards and get out because there's no way to turn around because there's no shoulders there. There's nowhere nowhere to go. So I I hesitate now to say for sure that the freeways open because it looks like so far. They're still diverting all the traffic off at highway. So then moving some of it through, but they they may not have reopened the whole thing yet. Right. So we're still dealing with at this point, you're being diverted. If you're coming into the scene new you're being diverted off the freeway at highway g and again, you just want to avoid having to wait through that long line of cars that essentially starts now at Ryan road. And goes all the way down to the exit. So jump off at Ryan or even at Drexel look for alternate routes to get down to the highway twenty area. That's where he could rejoin southbound ninety four past the closure and the lengthy lengthy delays ninety four westbound packed in for the Marquette interchange out to Mitchell boulevard where you can go to Mitchell airport and get an Amtrak, right? If you stop it somewhere shorter there, the Amtrak doesn't do much got that stop. What's that touted Illinois that they stop in going glencoe that Glenn Glenview view, the problem with that is is that it's not really? I mean, it's not close to any. It's not really that's sorted near skulk and saw your Evanston. But not really I mean, it's just the oddest place that they put a train station. And what are they did put it there? I mean, part of it is the Amtrak route does not go to the north shore cities with all the population is or along the lake it kind of runs the bailable land was so well, it was a it's a it's a freight train rails. Find them near the mouthwash. Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, brain Steph, Lauren vocal bomb here. Have you ever heard of a group of ferrets called a business of ferrets or a collection of jellyfish referred to as a smack of jellyfish? What about shrewdness of apes? We use collective nouns also known as nouns of assemblage to describe all sorts of groups hosts of angels bands of men and shocks of corn. Are commonly heard these days, but the nouns associated with particular groupings of animals can get weird fast because words in their uses are invented by people when we see a bunch of specific construction, you can bet on it being the result of a language fad and sure enough five hundred years ago, nouns of semblage were all the rage. We spoke via Email with Magdalen Jacobs a PHD candidate in the Vanderbilt University department of hearing and speech sciences. She said these are generally terms that came about from upper class hunting culture in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. They're called terms of Venneri, and they're linked to north. And culture and influence into the idea of proper hunting language over one hundred and sixty terms of Venneri are listed in book of Saint Albans, a wildly popular at the time manners guide published in fourteen eighty six the coached the medieval gentlemen through having conversations about hunting falconry fishing sports in heraldry without embarrassing himself at dinner parties. These collective nouns are found in a chapter entitled the companies of beasts and fowls though, some of the terms referred to people rather than animals a bit of a joke. The book Saint Alban's not only described a sleuth of bears and a skulk of FOX's, but also linked women to geese in the collective consciousness by labeling collections of both Gakhal's. According to Jacobs, this is partially because there is a direct linguistic link from the word gaggle to the middle English word for cackle, a collection of wives was labeled and impatience a group of writers on the other hand was called a worship if language tells us how to think about the world we conceive fifteenth. Century European gentleman's social priorities, though. Of course because you can't keep the kids for making up slaying. Once the construction was introduced in the book of Saint Albans, people started coining their own nouns of semblage. Although a lot of these terms slipped into obscurity in the sixteenth century like much of the lingo, we generate on a continual basis. Some of them were adopted into common speech these days. We don't often have occasion to talk about a sneer of butlers or misbelief of portrait painters, but whoever came up with a staff of employee's a congregation of churchgoers or a panel of judges should congratulate themselves on a job well done linguistically. Speaking. A much of the time that correct term for a group of anything. Let us know our collective views on the disposition of whatever we're naming some of the most evocative terms of veteran can be found in birds the book of Saint Albans lists and unkindness of ravens and a murder of crows, definitely creepy negatives. But a charm finches adorable, whoever I referred to a college of cardinals was probably suggesting they thought the group of little red birds looked like a meeting of academics. But why a group of storks is called a mustering is a little less clear. See us Lewis coined the term parliament of als in children's book series, the chronicles of narnia a nod to chaucer's poem, a parliament of fowls. The term is now recognized in dictionaries is being the correct term for a group of AL's. There are meanwhile, few nouns of assemblage for insects mentioned in the book of Saint Albans, we still refer to a swarm of bees which was recorded in the book, but we don't talk as much about a business of flies or a flock of lice. If you've ever heard of a kindle of kittens that comes in the middle English word kindling, which meant to give birth or produce a litter which was originally used only for puppies. But is now commonly used for all kinds baby animals, a group of adult cats might be a glaring or a pounce, but crowd of feral cats is a distraction anyone concerned about the decline of migrating songbirds can understand why that might be. Dogs, which were as much a man's best friend in the middle ages. As today got a lot of play in the book of Saint Albans, hunting hounds alone got several group titles. A cry a mute a pack and a kennel. Some of the most inventive terms of entry are plied to wild animals Jacobs said because they began as hunting terms, the original names from the book of Saint Albans reflected a specific societal disposition towards the animal being hunted. A pride of lions is a good example others that came later such as a wisdom of wombats may be inaccurate. As wombats are rather solitary and don't spend time in groups, others likely referred to qualities of the animals themselves, a business affairs came from a business affair, it's which makes more sense than business. If you've spent any time at all watching ferrets. These days folks continue to make up new nouns of assemblage and bring back old ones. Thus we can talk about April of hedgehogs an obstinacy of buffalo a bloat of hippos and a game of Wales regardless of whether we're planning on hunting them or not. "Beck. Everybody to Ed Randall's talking baseball. It's so hard. For our next guest to appear. He is the son and the namesake of his father, whom he and we just lost too soon to multiple myeloma. There is no one no one that was more beloved by both the Yankees and Mets fan bases than his father a legend in Burrows. He's here because he feels he owes it to his dad into the great fans of the city of New York, all of you. So with that up early for us on the west coast in the great city of skulk in Washington where I once worked the new pitching coach for the Miami Marlins. What a joy and honor. It is to have Mel Stottlemyre junior with us on Randall's talking baseball. There are no words to express our sorrow for you for your mom, gene. For Todd for the family for the loss of this. Great man before his time. No, I appreciate you. Having me on had. It's. Yeah. It's been it's been tough. There. There's you know. We had some time to think since since my dad's passing and just reflect back on the impact that he's made on on the baseball world on the people of New York, certainly on on his friends and family lives in. It's he's done. He's done some wonderful things and. You're right. It is a tough time to to talk about it. But I'm happy to do it. Well, we're so grateful because you feel that you owe it to your dead into the great fans of New York who loved them. They did. And you know, if my dad lives, seventy seven wonderful years and his great doctor namer there in New York when he was diagnosed and his other doctor in Seattle, doctor, Jan add koets really gave us if you if you really look at it from from the cards that he was Delton with the nasty disease that he had and that he fought in battle to the end, the really gave us today gave us twenty more years wonderful years of fishing trips of, you know, some some baseball and just continuing to be the great mentor and the person that he was and he he taught us all a lot about life those last twenty years. I bet I bet that he did we're going to we're going to break the phone system here for Mel Stottlemyre junior. We welcome. Your phone calls for him Yankee fans Mets fans. Baseball fans, who admired this man, who admired his father, the toll free number is, you know is eight. Eight eight eight nine two nine five nine six nine light it up for Mel Stottlemyre junior. What a career on the field. We think focus as the years pass. Mel on the great work. He did as a pitching coach for both teams. But as a pitcher, unfortunately, it was post dynasty. He came when it was ending. He came up from Richmond and pitch bleed to get them to the World Series against Saint Louis in nineteen sixty four. And then thereafter, he threw forty shutouts. He won twenty games three times. He had one hundred and fifty two complete games. He threw two hundred fifty or more innings in nine of his eleven seasons in his great career. And throughout the thing that stays with all of us was what a picture of class and dignity throughout his career. Obviously the great playing career. And you know, my my dad just in getting to know him the way that he looked at things and never taking anything for granted. And how he how loved the game of baseball. And in what you know, what he played for and just all the values that you wanna see in people. So yeah, he he played on some teams where they had some lean years. But I know I know how he was wired and how he thought that really led into his coaching career to where. You know, I I always admired respect that his players had for him and later on in life. You know, ask after grow up in the household and having a wonderful dad, raise you, you watched him admired the work that he did with those guys and respected. He had it. And you know, it all stemmed from the way that he treated people paying attention to details and how he treated everybody not only the fans the people that call his name when he was walking around the streets in New York and his own sons his his family. I mean, he taught us awesome wonderful lives. And I know a lot of his pitchers have had some great things to say about him since since his passing and very sincere words. He had a career earned-run average under three with the second baseman behind him. Who was I'll be polite shy about middling the double play. This is a ground ball pitcher with a great singer. Who could never assume the double play and yet never complained. Never complained. And that was the store, you know, we lost. My little brother Jason when when he was eleven years old leukaemia and Jason had a lot of of data. And he just just the way they battled and look life and never complaining. They kept kept grinding things out. And you know, my dad was born in Hazleton, Missouri and come from a little place called math in Washington and. I know that's the way that the path that he took to to get to where you did all those great things. And he he he lived by that and any coach by that. And he lived to the end and toddler saw about life, and how to live and what a great message, and you know, I pinch myself times. It's. I just knew as my dad, and so many people knew him of this this, you know, a man that they put on a stature and headed mired and honored and. Was an idol to a lot of people, and you just touched on something. He had a trait that separates, great baseball coaches. Mel he had relentless empathy. Well. He he showed my brother, and I a lot of love all the way to the end. And I know he took pride in that. And it it was something he didn't have to nounce to the world that he was gonna do. And and he did it and he loved his players. He talked about it all the time the respect that he gave them and the process it took to get to those guys to get the greatness out of them. And he really did instill a lot of time and care and to teach one of them. But it wasn't just as players. It was that way is his friends and people that didn't even know him that would stop him on the street. That's just how my dad was. And so well loved and in light. Just the respect. That's probably you know, my brother, and I had some time to reflect back and just the greatest messages and lessons in life. That we've learned is is how my dad treated people and how he loved people and how he looked at the world and his job and in his life. And what pitching coach catches bullpens. He thought that was the best way to see what his starting pitcher was going to have that night. And it still is that I did it when I was a younger pitching coach. Unfortunately, I had about five knee surgeries. So get down there. And it is tough guys are filthy nasty. Not that those guys weren't that. My dad caught. But you know, he he caught my brother, and I all the way, you know, in the off season when we were still playing and he loved to see the baseball from that other end what it was doing. And he could always he could always tell what was going on based on what that baseball was doing. It's I like to go down at the other end of the plate now instead of putting a glove on was standing in the batter's box. Oh hito. He'd has said that male could spot a change in your grip from the dugout. That's astounding. You got his head a good set. Is and. Like, I mean, he this is an hand invested. He never announced to the world that he wanted to be the greatest, but I can tell you everything you ever told my brothers. And is if you're gonna do something I want you to be the best, and I want you to do it. Right. And he looked at his job that way, I used to go down and visit him for spring training before I was going to go off and play the endless hours of watching videos getting to know these people so that when you can have those conversations he invested the time into that person that it took to get to know him. He was stricken with multiple myeloma, and he treated the disease an incurable cancer he treated that disease is a challenge to conquer in an opportunity to inspire others and on the phone for you mail. He's Kathy Giusti who is the founder of the multiple myeloma research foundation who loved your dad and loves your mom in you and the entire family. She's calling from Aruba. And we thought that we would put her on the air because I know she has a few things she wants to say, Kathy. Welcome to Ed. Randall talk baseball. Hi, ed. Hi now. How are you? Cathy. How're you? I got I'm good and Ed you are so right. I had how much love and admiration for your dad, and for your entire family the way he fought for disease, and I'm make I just. He would do anything to stay alive and keep say all around town because he never wanted. Anybody else to worry about him? And it was such a sign of a great leader. And an amazing patient inspired us. Not that. Oh, cathy. It's. No with my dad how he looked at how he battled that disease. He just you know, he he just waited for for something to turn or for another form of treatment to come out. He just knew that you guys could give him another year that he would take that year. Yep. Partner too. Because at you'll remember how amazing he wise at building awareness for my Aloma. Andy. MIF? I mean think about all the things that we did together. You know, he would come out and do the events and the Yankees would come and he'd raise awareness and do the interviews and the most memorable moment I ever have is walking out for the pitcher's mound between now Don Bailer for the subway series. And I remember looking at them and going to guys were walking all the way out like you taking me out to never thought this. And they just sit there, I'm Jami. Instead, you can do this. You can definitely do this, and it was for the most memorable moments ever ever in my life. And in that time there was so much wariness of ace around the disease and everybody became so much more familiar with it. And I think one of the reasons gets diagnosed earlier, and the reason we were able to raise dollars and bring their treatments was nose to Mark up on that. I'm so happy, you got to know him on that level. And you know, if you look at all the great things that he did as a player the coach, and you take those last twenty years in the people that he he mentored and talked talked through the tough times that they were going through, and he could relate and was there for people. I mean, people just strangers could reach out through emails and sometimes phone calls and my dad would take them and try to help them through in and just to give them that mindset and that positive influence that he had to keep going and fight, and he was a great role model for for many. And you hit it right on the head. Just raising awareness for for this disease. And and now being able to to diagnose it, and there's so many different forms of treatments and to keep people alive and keep them going, and we took that three to five year little window that you know, that they gave us and I remember he took it head on. I'll take it in the end the five years, they're going to find another treatment and. You know? It's man what if you just I wish everybody would have gotten a chance to to know my dad of the way that you did. And just the care that he had for the world and for people, and and the time that he took its he could influence a lot more. But I know he touched a lot of people's lives. And your mom, and like the pillar of strength when he was going to stem cell transplant into the hospital and just try to spend so strong. Like can was just amazing. I please give all of our love, Kathy. Thank you so much. You're you're so good to join us. Thank you very much. Thank you, Kathy. It's a gift. Thanks. Thanks now. Thank you, Kathy juicy of the founder of the multiple myeloma research foundation. Mel I've got a thousand phone calls for you. Please stay our number.
