"Well this is. I gotta say you know my my primary objection to the death penalty is that they get it wrong so fucking often but it's might as well. Sometimes they do get it right. Yeah this seems she. It totally totally deserved it. Yeah i mean. I don't think fit. She was insane on any level. She was a sociopath is what she was very likely narcissist. She her obsession with all that was she wanted that baby to have her face as the first face. It see in life rather than just let her be born. And then snatcher away. Which is the common approach four. Yeah baby snatchers. Yes yes and that would be the difference there with baby snatching like you said versus feed all snatching when they have to cut the kid out of the mother. Let me you would think that that would be a crime that would only be seen in the big cities but no it's actually on the rise fetal abduction. That's crazy. Yeah if guardian at a very interesting article about it. A- posted on our facebook page. Do that ladies if you're considering fetal abduction seek professional help. Yes fucking nuts. Absolutely go and find a psychiatrist. I yes in that bizarre phenomena. Yeah very bizarre. Loud weird phenomenon in my thoughts. Were with that. If she really wanted her face to be the first one that the kids season she wanted to feel that rush. Why wouldn't you go become a nurse where it could neo natal deliveries right. You know yeah. I mean to help the women that's actual work. Yeah it would be ailing. People who steal things are not really generally big on the whole work ethic thing. Yeah well in violence. Sociopaths are not big on helping people either. Eight so Yeah it was just so sad. And i we. My heart profoundly aches for that family to lose to people like that. But i almost think that branson's case is the weirdest of the well. Yeah they still unresolved very strange. Just vanish like that. It is nets also posted on our page. If i can find the reward is what are the portfolios for people to give information if you think you know. There's some ordeal in pre in skidmore. That explains it well. No not the portal. The hell like the portal to the f. b. i. office. There's a portal at the fbi. But you're probably called in city office about it. If you fell likey something and.

You might use something like a been slow to bring you down is i. Don't know last. I don yeah. As far as i can tell. There's no hard evidence that he was using methamphetamine Well you know. We've seen several times over the course of this show where police make shit up to fit their theories. Say for example yorkshire ripper. Oh she was out at two. Am she's a hooker. Yeah this is very true. And that was the thing with sp if you watch some of his interviews And this actually kind of segues into our next case. There's shit there is another big one. This is the other strange wine and arguably the bloodiest one that happened in skidmore ended this one. You skip ahead to december of two thousand and four in the house. Of bobbie jo stinnett. She's a twenty three year old dog breeding mom. She breeds rat terriers in cells in a little house in skidmore and one day in december. Her mom comes over and finds bobby joe bleeding out in the middle of her floor in that house blood everywhere and her words on the phone when she called sheriff espy. Was you have to get here. My daughter's stomach has exploded. Not her exact words. You often hear together. Yeah not in sense eight exactly and i mean this is again. A tiny tiny town of less than three hundred people and bobby joe was a little bit over eight months pregnant with a baby boy.

I wasn't able to find anything specific but i wonder date faddish on the other side of that too with the guys who are getting chopped would have there might have been masochistic going on there but so did he have any medical background at all. No oh he would read a book. Son anatomy and physiology and orcher. He entered it the perfect way to impale somebody but Well yeah they. That's not ready to. It's not really a delicate skill. No not at all There's really no bad way to impale person. Yeah if that's what you're going for It was interesting because they He had a person usually with him taking pictures when he would do this too. And they found all of these pictures on his hard drive of mr rogers taking the Severed members of all these men and putting them in played swearing them as hats Chewing on them and he actually said in a court filing that he quote retained ownership of the parts by eating them. Well i mean and from the legalistic point of view. There might be something to that if your doctor. Yeah yeah. I mean he. I just i don't know it's so weird. Yeah just unbelievably weird. But they caught this guy after one of his. I don't know whether you him quote patients or victims. Yeah came into the er bleeding in the urologist. "In after that is when the whole jumper cable thing happened and people. They were getting worried when they didn't hear from him. After about four to six hours that day and ultimately it was branson's grandmother who came over to the house tat night. She found his wallet in his keys in everything in his van. Still there and the radio was even on and they had the furnace on in the house in naperville. So i guess it was still a little cold dagger but she thought it was strange. And ultimately she and branson's mother called the cops to try to report him missing and the police from what they were saying. We're kind of brushing it. Off saying yeah. Oh teenager he'll be back. he's probably off with friends. He's that what they were saying. They're the quote from branson's mom was sowing wild oats. He had a girlfriend at the house. He didn't have to go somewhere. Well yeah i mean do you have that fact which that actually gets a bit more interesting and complicated to the more that we're going to get into this case but after a while it became clear that there was you know foul plays somehow involved here and the police did take it up in all seriousness looking for branson and they raised state reward along with the family and Private businesses in that area to ten thousand dollars for information about it but ultimately what was interesting here with prove to come from the very roundabout way in columbia missouri. which is about. I would say two three hours from skidmore. If you were going uh southeast arkansas. An ice seventy west of saint louis columbia is most known for the university of missouri. Being okay tigers They make an arrest. In colombia of a man by the name of i can find it here lost where i was instance van finding the radio genes. That.

I've never watched the whole thing of any. You know i. I try at it i it. It didn't stick. But then a couple of years later i went at it again and i ended up watching it through. It's pretty good cool. I'm gonna have to do that. But i mean these to wendy and greg known for you know the party scene having fun out there and again. This is the thing with these small towns. There really isn't much to do in the way of fun besides getting intoxicated. Going to vandalize being something. I should know you know i. Yeah you're looking at about twelve to may be fourteen thousand people and that is win Mary villes university is in session. So you'll get an eleven elson not but to start that off there's a really interesting story from Eighteen eighty eight looking forward. Oh yeah it's on my written one here. There was a fellow by the name of dr perry tablet or talbot do a little less than one hundred years before ken. Racks would be killed in Well in its home and it's very nice home and not a way And it would be one of the first notches of vigilante justice. On the county's bell. I think if my entire family from my parents on down moved skidmore we would increase the population by fifty percent. We'd say i mean. I actually went to high school in the town of about six hundred so i kind of get that dynamic as well We didn't have any violent crime and that little pound but yeah. I understand the dynamics run. My parents are from towns in idaho that were even smaller. Oh well so yeah yeah yeah. I've seen those kinds of places. Yep it's the two thousand seven flood the nod away river. I'm not sure what chris level was but yeah i mean skidmore is basically a place where you would saying nothing happened. It started in eighteen. Taxing time: How the pandemic will affect filing your taxes

"Tax filing season will look a bit different this year with the corona virus pandemic showing up here too there are several things tax filers should be aware of starting with the good news on those code relief checks you will not be taxed on the money that you've got on that but Associated Press personal finance reporter Sarah Skidmore sell advises anyone who collected unemployment benefits in twenty twenty to remember those are taxable they really face penalties and fines for failing to claim that income and if you were able to work from home last year don't get carried away with trying to write things off the home office deduction is really tricky because an employee of a company can claim it you can claim if you are self employed or a business owner but it has to be very truly dedicated space it has to be used solely for work and nothing else so your kitchen table or you also can eat dinner or your bedroom we also happen to sleep those do not count the IRS will begin accepting tax returns on February twelfth I'm Ben Thomas

"I listen to several podcasts. Every week and it is especially a thrill. When i can bring onto host of one of the podcasts that i listen to on a regular basis because i feel like i know this person already but we've never had a conversation in this case. It's actor bradley. She he's the associate professor of religion at skidmore college. Which i look where that was bred as like you must be snowed in spirit man. I'm here in southern california for california boy whose deaths from maui. This is not my native environment so well a little bit of your background. You actually went to zoos. The pacific university. Which is right down the road from where i live where you got your be in philosophy and always wonder you know when a undergraduate majors flossy where they planning to end up. You ended up getting a master's in philosophical theology at oxford. And then you did. Some time in france doing postgraduate work in philosophy. And then finally you finish up at the university of california. Santa barbara doing your piece de and religious studies. I just want. It's tell my listeners. If you ever enjoy some of the conversations i get into on this podcast. With my guest that crosses over into this post evangelical political sort of realm. The person feeding me. Most of my information is now my guest on the show. That's kind now thank you. That's flattering thank you can. Let's start with your story. Because i think what set you up. Not just as an academic to have such a substantive take on what's been going on during the trump years before trump years where we're going to go after the trump years is also not just rooted in your research but it's it's based in your own life so tell us a little bit about that. Yeah i let me just say thank you for that flattering introduction and just. It's it's an honor to be here. So i've been looking forward to this for a long time and i'm really grateful so you know for me i. I grew up in north orange county. My father's japanese-american my mother's white woman from tennessee. And they met in the middle He's from hawaii and we grew up. Your belinda placentia fullerton area. I did not grow up religious. My dad was was culturally. Buddhist is what i would say he. He mowed the lawn. At the buddhist temple on maui in inkatha louis he. He went to japanese school there. But when i was thirteen and ask them about what it meant to be a buddhist to give me a book and i read it and i thought after i read it he would discuss it and i realized later. He gave it to me because he didn't know anything that was in it. He just didn't want to have me ask questions about what it meant to be a buddhist at fourteen. I had a very extreme conversion at a evangelical mega church and a conversion meant that i went from the kid who was hanging out with other teenagers behind the movie theater. Smoking and drinking and doing that kind of stuff to within months standing in front of the movie theater asking people if they knew my savior the lord. Jesus christ and if they knew where their so would be return ity. Tell us a little bit about how that dramatic conversion took place. I was invited to wednesday night. Bible study at rose drive friends church. rose drive is part of that network of quaker churches that richard nixon grew up in so i i was invited to that church by a girlfriend and i thought you know i'm fourteen. There's not a lot of ways to see your girlfriend on a with night off to pragmatist and there's no way mom can say no to this. If i want to go to church she's gonna say yes. So let's do it. This is a great plan She dumped me very quickly but that youth group became my second home. I found there what you would find in the ninety s at youth groups all over the place. Young cool hip leaders. They had tattoos. They played the guitar. We have a lot of fun games. The bible messages weren't boring and all of a sudden the existential angst. I had about the meaning of life and the depression that i faced throughout my entire childhood. I found answers found solutions to my condition. In jesus in god and so a very quickly i went from a kid probably hanging around folks who are going down the wrong direction drugs and alcohol and other stuff too when my mom asked me what i wanted for christmas on my When i was sixteen. I asked her how much she was gonna spend. She told me i said mom. I want you to give me that money. And i'm going to buy as many pamphlets and tracts and bibles as i can for people in nepal and i'm going to send them there because that's what's important and that's why how we should be using our money. Now i gotta ask you bread. Did your parents on the one hand. I'm sure they're going well. This is nice. He's not hanging around with those bad people anymore. The water bozos right. Okay right these these these yoga right but but at the same time is dislike. Did our son just joined a cult. So it's exactly what you said. For mom. there was times. I think she was relieved. But you know when your son is saying. Hey i don't buy me letterman's jacket for the basketball team. Send the money to nepal for bibles. I think she kinda wish. I was back to the guy getting caught with the kid. Smoking pot again. I mean she was kind of like. This is a little extreme. It was a lot harder for my dad. My dad's japanese-american guy. He grew up in the cradle of asian american. You know Communities on maui. His life was in the buddhist temple even though he he really didn't wasn't a practicing buddhist so for me to join a mega church especially church. That was ninety percent. White was really hard for him and it took a lot of convincing to let me go to the wednesday night. Bible study or the retreat or the youth group party or whatever.

"Let me ask you not you Brian. But let me ask you out there in radio land cut. I love that sound so stupid, doesn't it? Listeners if they've ever heard of one eight hundred got junk. Yeah. Probably very few people having the gentleman who created that. And is the CEO. I yes. Is Brian Scudamore? Do I have that? Right. Is that pronounced that correctly? Brian Skidmore scooter more okay, fair enough. So the whole story is fascinating. So I'm gonna go right to the beginning of how you created this business rather unusual story. Yeah. Really, I if you go back to the beginning. So I was born in San Francisco moved to Canada when I was about eighteen years old, and I never finished high school, very ABD had trouble focusing. I was one course shorter graduation now all my friends were going to college. I wanted to figure out how to join them. So I talked my way into college, but didn't have the money, and it was in the McDonald's drive-thru of all places beat up old pickup truck in front of me with plywood side panels filled with junk, I saw that truck. It said Mark Pauline on the side. And I had a dream. I went out and bought a thousand dollars. I had in the Bank my life savings. I spent seven hundred dollars on a pickup truck started the company the whole Junkin there. We are one eight hundred dot Jonquet started. With one truck is now. Well, over three hundred million in revenue all over the States, Canada, and Australia and love, and like it's really is an amazing story how it started. But we need to win whenever I see your hauling junk where do you pick it up? And where do you move it to do we pick it up from someone's home? So someone has a garage basement. They're renovating remodeling. They've got junk cleaning out when they're moving spring cleaning. We take all those items off to recycling stations transfer stations where they will sort through and the Vert most of the junk actually from the landfill. So one thing that's great about the world. And especially about Los Angeles their leaders in this area is they've got what's called immerse Mattel materials recycling facility where acquitted and technology sorts through just about anything you put into their system, and they will take things off all the metal the newspaper, the cardboard everything gets recycled and leading the charge. Leading the world in terms of recyclability. So you're good about if we're taking away junk, at least it's ending up in indecent places. So you're not taking into landfill per se. You're taking it to these centers. And then they just take it from you. Exactly. So if there's anything salvageable in there, we try and take her nature to the homeless for the foundation army to different charities if it's in good shape, the rest, we take these big buildings for stations where they sort through it. And at least things are getting recycled and typically, I assume you which I'm just curious about the cost because I have you have no idea how much stuff I'd love to have you pick up. I just have to do. Have to do it. When my wife is on vacation. What do you charge for this? It all depends on volume. So the amount of space that your junk takes up in our trucks. So given that were across the country. It depends on landfill and transportation costs in each market, but you know, five hundred six hundred dollars for a whole truckload. But if somebody just has a portion of a load than you, we often have a minimum charge in ninety nine dollars an up. So it really depends on volume. But all we we say all the time on a radio ads. All you have to do is point people point. We make junk disappear. All right. So the another part of the story, which I think is kind of neat is it is now a franchise, correct? Yeah. I started the business and ten years later, I franchised. Okay. So what Donald what made you go from a an ownership of the trucks and having employees etcetera to a franchise franchise operation. Why did you make that move? I love I love entrepreneurship I wanted to see others grow and build businesses. Not just myself. So I was inspired by Ray Kroc McDonald's model, which of course, started in Los Angeles area. And I love what he did. And I thought you know, if I can follow in his footsteps and take something where people have skin in the game..
