Why 10 Super Bowl Appearances Won't Satisfy Tom Brady
"Hey thanks for joining me man. Good to be here. Seth wicker sham is a senior writer at espn and he's covered. Tom brady since his rookie year in the nfl. Words with you. Seth you are. Espn's resident. tom. Brady you've been covering brady for nearly twenty years. I believe at this point. You're the first person to report. That brady was looking for a way out of new england back when that was on thinkable and honestly kind of dangerous to suggest in the boston area. But your piece out. Today ahead of. Tom brady's tenth super bowl in tampa bay with the buccaneers. It actually begins a decade ago back in new england. What happened a couple years ago. I was in tom. Brady's house and we were in his living room and he was telling a funny story about bill belichick. It was a saturday morning meeting before a game against new york. Jets and bella. Check was watching film of mark sanchez. Running out of the pocket rolling to his right players it is heels and he had a wide open receiver about sixty yards downfield on the opposite hash. So that's an almost impossible. Throw to attempt. I mean few quarterbacks ever would try that throw even fewer would complete it and the way that brady told it to me. That ballot check was just watching the play unfold and he was like just throw it. He's wide open. Why isn't sanchez. Throwing the ball and brady's little thought bubble was hilarious because he was thinking. I would never even attempt that throw. Do you have any idea how i would look in. Tried to throw that ball. And meanwhile checks just like can't get even more open. He can't get more open. Just throw it in. The way that brady explained to me later was very interesting because he said i see each play within my limits at the time. I didn't really see the significance in that statement. But when you watch. Tom brady now aged forty three years old and the entire sporting world asking how. He's done it how he's been able to get another team to the super bowl. I looked back at that statement. And i found a lot of answers in it was brady frustrated with ballot check. Invalid check suggested as much. I wanna get deeper into. Brady's thought bubble there. I think he thought it was hilarious. He he saw it as a defensive coach who had no bearing on the reality of how difficulties throw that ball. He wasn't frustrated with ballot check. He was like a little amazed that bella check thought that that type of pass would be so easy i mean. That's that's a john elway throw. That's josh allen throw mahomes through. There's very few people who could ever even try that and here. Ballot check was talking about mark sanchez. Saying he's not going to get more open than that. Just throw the ball. As kind of an indictment on the quarterback where brady saw it as you know something that was hard to believe. Couldn't believe that that his coach thought that a throw like that with that easy. And when you look at tom brady look at the arc of his career. He's someone who's kind of always understood his limits and by understanding them so well he's found a way to transcend them so those limits that he has this keen understanding of and that being this superpower. It is something that we can. Plainly see in contrast to josh allen and john elway and patrick mahomes and lamar jackson. These absurd physical talents. And that's been clear set ever since we saw brady with shirt off to be honest at the combine in two thousand but because he is also the greatest of all time without real serious dispute at this point playing more super bowls than anyone ever by far at to ask if you fully buy his explanation that that superpower is in fact and understanding of his own limitations. At first i didn't. And i remember. I was once in his house in two thousand thirteen back when we thought he was getting old. 'cause he was going to be thirty seven when the season started. And you know he can't play forever and he said something really interesting. He said there's nothing that will be able to replace football. And hopefully it gets to appoint where there is when i retire in nine ten years and he said it so offhandedly and so smooth that it was it went right over my head. It was a shot across the bow. Here was a declaration to play until he was aged forty five and he someone who has made a mockery of conventional wisdom. And so i thought there is no way when he said that that he was someone who learned how to play football within the scope of his own limitations. But as you watch him play you actually see it on the field. And i think that it helps define him as a football player because he can't do what aaron rodgers does. He can't do it. Patrick mahomes does these sort of amazing acrobatic throws but what he can do and what he's always been able to do is pick apart a defense and bleed teams to death. And i think that that's what he was getting at when he talks about playing within his own limits because he's so deadly an accurate when he throws short.

Trans People Taking Office: Brianna Titone Leads the Way
"So Brianna you and I met on twitter and I'm always taken by how tirelessly you work. It seems like you don't sleep do you sleep. You know. Seven seven hours. That's pretty good. That's better than me. How much you share on social media I also think is really important. So thank you for all you do. I really appreciate it. Let's start at the beginning. Can you give my listeners? A little bit more about your background. You grew up in New York right. Yeah from a small town in upstate. New York in the catskill area class of about one hundred and twenty five students in my high school. So everybody knew everybody's business all the time and for me. I was kind of someone who liked to not be the center of attention and I wanted to be Blend in because you know I was a secret cross dresser and that was something I could never let anybody know in a small town especially in the early nineties. Because that wasn't something anybody knew about or did so I how did you? How did you figure out that something that felt good for you cross dressing? It was at your moms close. Yeah yeah it's Kinda just experimentation and just felt right and I wanted to. I wanted to be a girl but I just. It just didn't nothing matched up with me on that and I didn't have any role models or anything I had the Phil Donahue show and a couple of episodes that I saw about transgender people and and it wasn't really put in a good light but it was very intriguing to me and that was one of the first things I remember Of of my childhood of of anything I really saw about that because I liked girls and the the guests on the show were transgender. Women who were married women right. I was like Oh this didn't make a whole lot of sense but it resonated with me. It's funny I wonder how many people watch the Phil Donahue show and got some sort of reflection of who they are from watching because he was great at bringing on guests that we had not always seen in society. Yeah I mean. I don't think he did it to be a freak show like the Jerry Springer ended up doing but the audience didn't really always take those people very friendly but it was intriguing to me and it was always an thought I had in my head but not having any other role models earning exposure to atten no internet. Of course the time I just kind of your parents supportive. They found out about me because I got careless. I was very good at hiding it and they found you. WanNa be found at all. I did not. I was mortified. I mean the sense of like your heart wanting to jump out of your chest of embarrassment and I think everyone can relate to that feeling of being found out about something. Yeah it was. It was a horrible feeling. And you know they were calm and you know they confronted me about it very nicely and they said you know. Would you like to see therapists? And can we talk about it? And I mean I would other choice I have so we did and I talked to therapists about it and from what I remember. The conversation was this. Oh this phase. Don't worry ban so once I walked in to the first therapist it was essentially him saying. We don't really have the tools to help you few months more pass and I walk into another therapist office and she also within the first minutes to said. That sounds like it's really tough thing. I actually don't have the skills to help you or the tool southfield. Six months later I find myself in another therapist's office this time. It was actually after a suicide and he also said this is a really tough thing but we don't have the tools to help you. At that point I tend to for a year so it was really kind of petrifying experience for me to to just sort of transitional loan and I often wonder what would happen if I walked into. That first step is office and said trends and they just said that's great. Let's let's see what we can do for you know. They didn't really know a lot about that kind of stuff back then and especially in a rural part of New York. The therapist really weren't gonNA know a lot about it. If I went to New York City and saw therapists. They're they might have some more information. Maybe better trained in that. Tell you at this point. I think I was probably thirteen. So Young. Yeah and just because of the sheer embarrassment. I just went outside and I burned everything that I had because I can't do this. What society was telling me that was wrong. Right and also you wanted to feel like you're fitting in in school and you wanted to sort of disappear as you said before and yet how you felt was other than yeah yeah and. I just thought that I just if I got rid of all the stuff and then have it anymore. Wouldn't want to be part of my life anymore and that didn't last long and I was ordering things on the Victoria's secret catalog and making sure I got the mail that day when it came very stealthy hiding it and I continued to hide it from them and they didn't know that I was still doing it until I really came out to them as a trans person in my thirties so I kept from them throughout college. How did you just not have these conversations with them? No I just avoid it and you hear a lot of other stories from people about losing their family and losing their friends when they come out and I didn't want that partisan I've ever had to do was to my family and friends. Her daughter is now thirteen. What does she do? She calls me doubt sometime. My daughter and I do a lot of hiking. Hiking history and football are among her favorite things. Westbrook can throw a football nearly sixty yards and throwdown with the guys at work. Is that competitive spirit? That's feeling her fight in the race for Washington. I've been at the lowest points in society and worked my way up to where I'm at now everything that I've been through gives me a certain edge. That representatives typically don't have. I I didn't feel connected with WHO I was when I was about five years old so if I just didn't tell anybody I wouldn't have to worry about it but eventually I came out to the world and I had no choice so I discount cross my fingers. I think about parenting and how my mom used to save his thing to me? Which was don't send in their blind meaning. If something's going on I need to hear from you not from someone else and I think that there's got to be a point of relief. That happens when you know that. Someone's hiding something because parents everything and then being able to discuss it in a way that even better for worse even if you decided at that point you know what. I can't be a part of this because the way in which you see me as destructive but to at least have the conversation right relieved. Yeah they were. They said well. We thought you stopped doing that. And I was like no. I just got better at hiding it because I didn't. I didn't WanNA bring up that. Probably hard that they felt too and we don't really talk about it even still. It's kind of just something we don't we don't go there anymore. We just kind of exist as people doing our own things and I was reading your bio and I was like this person has been through so much and you've taken so many different pads in your life so if those of you that don't know about Brianna shot was a volunteer firefighter. Yup What did you learn about that experience? So I joined up at Sixteen as a junior firefighter and junior firefighter basically rolls up the hoses and gets folds the tarps in gets helps out and I got to take a lot of classes at the county. All of the fire training classes that were available and then when I turned eighteen than I was actually able to put the wet stuff on the red stuff. That's what we used to say. Well and then you were. Also you studied geology physics and Electrical Engineering Double Major. I then I was just a physics major and then I went back to the department chairs to say. What else have you got to offer? An geology was great for me because incorporates all the sciences and I really like science so I ended up switching to geology major and then I decided that I had enough credits to get a physics degree too so I got the physics degree and the geology degree and a minor math. What did you study in Grad School? I I got a master's degree in geochemistry

S. staged well this certainly push back from Democrats first just because of a process here Democrats say that the it ministration did not properly brief Congress and give that advanced warning ahead of time and that they should have done that and they have to consult with Congress under the war powers act has bigger Nancy Pelosi says that the house will vote this week to limit the president's authority to take military action against Iran she called that strike last week that took out Qassem Soleimani quote provocative and disproportionate Iraq's parliament yesterday voted in favor of a resolution calling for US troops to leave the country where does that stand well it's non binding but certainly if this is added another dimension to the challenges of the administration has in the Middle East the president yesterday told reporters that the US will demand Iraq pay back the money that the US has invested in that country through the U. S. military any threatened economic sanctions if troops are forced to withdraw if this is not done in a friendly way between US and Iraq it will make a runny and sanctions looks somewhat tame I mean the U. S. has spent billions of dollars of course in or rock rebuilding there but also just for the US military presence the bases and outposts that are there the president has always said he wanted to bring troops out of Iraq this could be a way that he does it by saying they made us do it the president's just wrapping up but extended holiday vacation at his resort in Florida there are there are there any plans for him to address the nation on this nothing sixteen full days in Florida that seventeen if you count the ninety travel down there and today he has no public events here at the White House alright Karen thanks for your time is always say be sees Karen Travers with us from the White House Vermont senator Bernie Sanders holds a very narrow lead over former vice president Joe Biden in the latest poll for the New Hampshire democratic primary the CBS poll shows that Sanders leads Biden twenty seven percent to twenty five percent Elizabeth Warren is further back eighteen per said Pete booted yours is fourth at thirteen percent again in New Hampshire the new report shows the US states will need to tackle greenhouse gas emissions to be climate change the study released by the rocky mountain institute stated that the shrinkage of coal mining has decreased electric power sector emissions but natural gas and other fossil fuel emissions have remained the same the institute hopes to see greenhouse gas emissions reduced by eighty percent by the year twenty fifty a South Carolina police officer has become the first U. "Philly one thirty four to when eighteen Minnesota once Ecksteen chargers. One twelve surprising. Arizona one twelve and in the bottom. This is a shocker Atlanta's eight yards batter on the road giant sixty yards better on the road or they're at home this week. That's what I'm saying. So but Tennessee is number twenty three Tennessee's Purdy road or home. Rely also, but actually only thirteen yards difference. That's interesting. But I guess they're not that much better at home. So just to finish up. The only teams that are negative on the at home Detroit. Seattle that blows my mind. Seattle's fifty two yards batter net on the road this year. Pittsburgh giants Atlanta. But we might think all it's a small. But if you're looking at yards, it's so much better than saying teams one in four or whatever, right. Yeah. But it's just the binomial. But it still one game that's giving you a hundred and thirty eight plays. And so you one hundred thirty eight data points. But I'd argue yet still one data point that doesn't make any sense you're saying you'd rather have one day the point rather than to me. That's the only if you can't trust per plane the NFL were fought because I mean think about it. There's only sixteen games in a year. We're never going to be able to six on enough. Just for all games. Forget eight what can you know about eight game? Well, I'm just but I'm saying, no, you just said was each games. One data point. You can't get anything from the per plywood. Rather look at down on white BP. I'm about that. I'm talking about per play in might be. It might be. There's all kinds of ways to get at. A play basis. But if all we're looking at final scores, I don't think we can figure anything I agree with that. But I do think you look at a team like Dallas. They don't have a big home field advantage for whatever reason they've had a monster extremity year where they've so much better at home than on the road this year. I don't know what to make of it. It doesn't it conflicts completely with the historical data Dallas is actually one of the best teams on the road, historically, relative to home. But the funny thing is the yards backs it up I was hoping to get it. You know, I was hoping Dallas would be at the middle of the pack reaffirming the point. So it's something to watch. I am not going to press the button, I was going to get scared. This is RJ bells dream review..

It looked like it was in traffic, but his ability to place it over the linebacker in front of the safety was great. I mean, I thought Brady played better than I've seen him play a lot of games this year. But there were so many scattered big plays for Miami. And whether that is just kind of a blip, just more of an aberration. From Miami's ability to strain those together rather than New England's defense playing poorly. I don't know. But at the same time if you're the patriots, that's what you can't allow to happen. When Brady's playing like that you can't allow several fifty sixty yard touchdown snap. We combine the first stock down with my challenge. Like. Sure. That's that works. I want to talk about this for an extended period of time done. I want to talk about the Washington Redskins figured. That's what you're talking about. Thomas. Boswell columnists in America for a very long time for a very very long time big influence on on young Kevin car for better or worse. And on young Robert Mays for sure Ben for better worse. Meaning on my end. Not certainly not on. I I mean, mean. I he unleashed helped helps hone my writing style. Which is now been unleashed onto the planet for better or worse. He's he called the Redskins a lot worse than bad. It looked unprofessional and the more. I think about it. That's like Kevin card disappointed, dad, tone, the more think about it the more. That's just one hundred percent, right. It's not just bad. It's not like the Bengals giving up fifty one to the saints or whatever, it's unprofessional. There's a quote in there. I can't I can't even fathom announce from Jay Gruden that product was not a reflection of the work that went into preparation Gruden said. However, it did look bad. Yeah. No shit. Jay. That was one of the worst. They were down forty to nothing to a giants team that I haven't the giants. The jets are not the worst team in the NFL or anything. They've won some games vector on kind of a mini hot streak, but you have to give me something a little better than that. You went out. And you said that Mark Sanchez knew the system. Well, what the hell is wrong with your system? In fact, the worst case scenario is that this is Mark Sanchez when he knows the system. I would go back and say, actually, we were just joking. Mark Sanchez had no idea what the system was. I just Mark Sanchez six or fourteen thirty eight yards two interceptions. Josh Johnson comes in eleven eleven for sixteen one nine five one touchdown wanted reception. So game was already over. I mean, of course. But it means I'm not saying Josh Johnson. Did a nice job. I'm saying they got two hundred thirty combined yards from. Crappy quarterbacks. I don't wanna do the Callan cabernet thing this with everyone else is just that you I mean, it's embarrassment. They're not looking at them. Everything else. It to me. It's more about just the thought processes that go on with NFL offenses, NFO coaches to say and put out there that Sanchez the guy you went with because he understood the system and that is his redeeming quality the ravens within a week changed every element of who they were offensively because they had a better player available to them. And that style of football was more conducive to them winning football games. And they're giving the chiefs are run for their money. Almost completely because they're weird offense with their talented quarterback gives them a chance. This is not real Matt Nagy invented a play on Friday that had ten linemen with it. Yes. It's just it's so so so ridiculous to me that a team is going to come out and say because Mark Sanchez. Ios was the coach with our offense coordinator when he happened to be the quarterbacks coach in New York six or seven years ago. He's a better option for us to win a football game on Sunday that a player that's considerably more talented than him that happens to like play in a different style than we use the excuses..

"And the issue though, is that the next day I had a wind direction that would have been blowing into the bedding area and I'd knew the spot so good if I go, I want to go back in right away, right. See all these books. I knew if I moved my my, not my stand, but I moved, whereas hunting sixty yards farther north to where most of those came by thought, I'd be able to get a shot. I was pretty confident the wind be good. Well, if the wind was good, I can move sixty yards. But when wasn't good, that takes restraint, man, it takes restraint to bag it because the winds bad. Yeah, and it was. Yeah, I was taught so badly wanted to go back in there and seen Sony. I was like, this is such a Honey hole, but I just knew if you wait till the conditions are right, you will kill it here there if you go back in there tomorrow and just hope to get lucky, you're messing up. So I said, Nope, I'm not going to go the Honey hole. There was one of the piece of public. I'd seen on the maps that looked pretty good at. I hadn't been to ever before. I thought, well, I'm gonna give this other spot arrest way to the winds right on the go check out this news Bob and this new spot kind of had all the same things going forward. That night number one spot did. It was long, the right period corridor. It was hard to get to and it was tucked behind private land. They had food on him, but what made this one hard to get to versus the first was that rather than walking river, I'd walk more than a mile up on top of this big bluff and then go down one of those Steve nasty canyons like you were talking about, like basically sliding down this canyon. I had to bring tent poles because I didn't have truck it sticks or anything. So I had like tarp pole. Yeah. So it was not ideal but was all head and as well. I need something to give you some kind of pours and sliding down this, so got down. It's not so bad that needed to repel in NASA better repellent, but suite of. And that's next year. The got down this canyon getting this little piece of public land again and same kind of deal. They were deer bedded back in this public Russian olive Cottonwood brush. They would transition through this little piece public outdoors that private land with alfalfa. But again wasn't right close enough. So I did see another mature buck that were shot at if I could of. But he was about one hundred twenty yards away. Bunch of does little box. Not quite as much action as the first night. But again, it was. I felt good. Like I've got. I've got. Huge giant book. Not a big, huge giant. Like when he got. I'd take similar in that like definitely, you know, three, four, five year olds. Somewhere in that he was probably four or five years old and he's a ten pointer con titan tall, like one thirties, somewhere on the me one forty for if we care about score, you like lots of all, here's a buck. Yeah. I mean, it was a bucket. Yeah. So it's cool to see that too far away. So then I waited till they all went through way to after dark everything and transitioned after those fields snuck out of there again. Now I've, no, I've got two different spots I can work with. So depending on winter action, whatever other conditions might change, I can adjust. Now you hunt by yourself. Car camping by yourself, car, camping, sleep in.

"Targets including eight catches for hundred sixty yards and a touchdown. That that part's not broken. There are a lot of parts about the Steelers that you look at right now and say, all right, maybe we need to fix this certainly defensively. It seems like there's woes that they've got to address really haven't been addressed for a while around there as we make this about the offense and missing levian bell, Antonio Brown acting up a lot. Like what we always say, the patriots locked down everything. When it gets to the season, the Steelers make this work on offense. Like I, we have yet to see over any substantial amount of time enough of a drop off with what this offense of unit is capable of, or the very least what it's intent is and five straight hundred seasons for Antonio Brown's and leading the NFL and targets indicates to me some level of intent with this guy in this spot. That we can worry about the conduct becoming a problem long term maybe. But they've shown me enough of an ability to deal with this now. Then I'm probably gonna pump the brakes on most of that and just wait for AB to show up today. I mean, that's the other thing that gets lost and drew houses agent. Came out and put a lot of these fires out of the tweet. Yesterday, quote, the tweet yesterday was not in reference to anything other than Antonio sp- responding to a person. He knows that former Steelers PR staffer. It was not directed toward a trade or wanting to be traded. It was a personal response to a former Steelers. Employees insulted him any idea. He was asking for a trade is not accurate. And Secondly, yesterday he had personal matter. I talked to him about it. He has an issue unrelated to this tweet or his relationship with the team. And third, anything you see between AB and the coach is AB is an incredible drive to win. He just wants to win first and last the podcast all rise for the honorable Aaron. Judge Yankees fans can breathe. A sigh of relief. Last night is not only do they get a win over the Boston Red Sox down the stretch of the season, which we've talked about ad nauseam the AL east isn't over and done conversation, but the location of the wildcard and where that game is going to take place as the Yankees and the as jockey for position there. Becomes a more interesting dilemma that now got a little bit of a vote of confidence in favor of the Yankees yesterday and part of that had to do had to do with Aaron judge coming back the other day. But I, I gotta address something. We'll hear from Aaron judge in a second. We will hear from his manager Aaron Boone, but I was handed to urgent horrifying notes this last night and things that I think are worth addressing because we come to certain realizations late in life, right? Everyone realizes certain things. I didn't try salad or yogurt until I was twenty one years old and I try both of them for the first time on an airplane. We can't control when the right time finds us, but these are two shocking revelations. The I, I just saw someone tweeted at me in the one eight hundred flowers dot com. "I got about a minute and a half. Cowboys beat the giants on Sunday night football twenty to thirteen the jets losing during the course of the afternoon Yankees Mets lost as well. Go a big game on red zone yesterday. Jerry was chiefs Steelers. It's actually fun to watch. I kept thinking of boomer every time. I saw Patrick Mahomes. I keep thinking to Greg every time. I see Patrick Mahomes every time he threw another touchdown. I I had the love boat theme. I had for like how boomer loves him like love, shiny and new Ben Rothlisberger. They'll seemed about the only quarterback yesterday that had all day to throw the ball. He just there were times. I saw him standing there and looking looking and looking yeah, they scored thirty seven points and they didn't win right? He threw for like four hundred sixty yards or something going on with Ryan Fitzpatrick in your in your box. Ryan fitzpatrick. Jameis Winston get his job. I hope not he he's a bad guy. You hate him. I know he's not a good person. I hope he loses his job to an old man from Harvard thing about that strictly football sense is unbelievable again. But how do you did see some articles from the Tampa area saying that oh when he comes back he'll probably not play the first week, but he'll be playing James Winston probably figure at some point. Ryan Fitzpatrick will turn into Ryan Fitzpatrick is opposed to right now. He's John Elway. Yeah. And he was looking sharp stern for nine hundred yards in two weeks right off the bat. He threw that bomb to Dijon Jackson wars clothes after the game in the press conference that will fix.
