Two College Football Powerhouses, an Angry Commissioner, and the Big 12's Uncertain Future
"So max. It's early august college. Football season is still about a month. Away has the news of the past. Few days really destroyed your final quiet days of summer. Yes certainly while to think that you know. Usually in in her line of work media days tend to kind of be that starting point for us of it's all downhill from there and coincidentally the big twelve just had their media days in arlington texas. A couple of weeks ago. Not a word was mentioned of realignment or fears of realignment or of texas and oklahoma being on the way out or on the fence or anything and so forever to go through all that sort of polite typical preseason talk and stuff and then within a week the world finds out about the scheme that texas and oklahoma had in the works clearly for quite a while here pretty jarring just for everybody. Well the reason why we brought you on. Max is to explain what in the world is going on in the big twelve and also these claims being made against espn and what to make of all of this. So let's start here. Can you describe how important the two teams that will be leaving. The big twelve texas and oklahoma are to this conference. It's really hard to some. How much texas. And oklahoma mean to the big twelve from a financial standpoint from just sort of a brand perception standpoint. These are the two powerhouses of the conference. They are always the two programs that rate the highest in recruiting the get the best players square. Marvin talented fresca. Certainly texas has struggled to win in a big way over the last decade. Despite having so many good players but oklahoma's one six street conference titles is the big twelve champion for the sixth year in a row for the fourteenth time in the twenty five year. History of this conference. These are kind of the tent poles of the conference there. The top of the food chain here in this ten team league and you know the money. They bring in benefits everybody in this conference.
The History of Grand Central Station
"On a snowy january morning in nineteen o to a train operator entering midtown manhattan missed the stop signs. The train pummeled into a danbury express train on fifty sixth street the collision killed fifteen people on impact. At least forty more passengers were bruised and burned and two died within a week at the time it was the worst train accident in new york city. History there had to be a solution for the smoke from the train. Steam engines that fog the tracks. The new york central railroad's chief engineer william j. wilderness. Had a solution while the phrase lightbulb moment may not have been in the popular lexicon yet wilga said his inspiration came to him quote in a flash of light. It was the most daring idea that ever occurred to me. We'll just wanted to demolish the existing grand central depot and swap out all the stations steam powered trains for electric ones. Getting rid of the noxious fumes would help. Train operators see their path ahead. They could even run underground more tracks beneath the surface. Meant less need for bulky. Train sheds on street level. We'll just figured the leftovers space could house retail businesses and encourage private development. He envisioned the new station as a so-called gold mine and he was right today. Grand central terminal is a bustling masterpiece spanning forty eight acres and forty four platforms in the heart of manhattan. It's one of new york's biggest architectural gemstones and arguably one of the most majestic transportation hubs in the world but any building with so much money traffic and history as its fair share of

K l b j dot com This segment brought 7 48 tied Jeffries and don prior. Good morning, getting word that around Austin City Hall. They're tearing down the Chaz Encampment, the autonomous zone. You know those those folks that are rug homes, not handcuffs. That's the name of the group. They put a bunch of tents around the city. We're getting word that now The police are down there, right this very minute taking things down. So so there we go. If you're in that immediate area, we'd love to get your eyewitness reports at 51283605 90 like the sound of that. Do you feel safe going into what? Downtown Austin. Maybe during the day you do. But at night at sunset, How do you feel about taking your family? You know down to see, you know, maybe it's something at the paramount or go get a steak dinner somewhere downtown. How do you feel about owning a business downtown? Considering the mass shooting this weekend barrage several shootings over the weekend in multiple locations. How do you feel about your downtown core city? Right now? We've been talking for years about dirty sixth. Yep. We have and dirty Sixth Street has the types of bars that attract, uh, different kind of crowd. It's just a shot bar. It's not just a bunch of college kids at all at all. No, I I agree with you taught. I don't think I don't think the majority of what you have on 63. They're going to be college kids. I think they're over in rainy. I think they're at it at the domain and elsewhere. Maybe other parts of downtown But but not 636 Street to me is, uh and I'll be honest with you, Uh, it's made up of a bunch of really not so great people, and I think a lot of really uneducated uh, folks I don't know associated with college students and tourists. If any tourism I think it's tourists who probably don't know what the hell they're doing. They shouldn't be there. Um I don't feel safe on sixth Street. During the day we went down to sixth Street where we're downtown for meeting a few years ago, we decided over the Sixth Street needed this pizza place during the day. We were costed three times by homeless people, and I saw things I didn't want to see all this before. We even sat down at the restaurant. Don't feel safe there any time. I've always thought it was by design the City Council. What really wants these shot bars gone on Sixth Street. You don't go there. Nope. I don't go there. I and in fact, I know very few people in this building that go to Sixth Street. Maybe some really young employees, possibly. But I think there is this this this thought as well behind closed doors at Austin City Hall, that how about we let the Let Sixth Street deteriorates a bunch of shot bars, let them just fade away and let them and then we transformed this area into high rise condos. Well, I'll tell you mean, they often say that they need additional housing rights. They often say we need more affordable housing downtown. We need more places for people to live. I'm just curious. There's there's not a whole lot of advocates on either side of the aisle. To support and prop up shot bars on sixth Street. No, uh, one of the issues you're going to have us for development, though, of course, is that the majority of those buildings down on sixth Street or historic, so they probably would not be able to be demolished in this town. I would rather see those things have the shot bars go away and turn them into thread, hopefully thriving businesses or condos. Yeah, I mean, turn the existing buildings in the Condos or incorporate those into two new development. Yeah, we don't need six street anymore in this town. We we don't I think again, Speaking of college students, I think the majority of those folks are on the east side of I 35 on sixth Street going to a lot of those new bars over there and restaurants as well Jump in at 51283605 Daddy out West Rashid in Austin on the tide of Don show this morning. Good morning. Good morning. How's it going? Good. What's going on? Nice. Okay. I didn't want to quickly terrified something. Okay, now, I'm sure a lot of your listeners probably don't want to hear this. But this is a simple truth. Jihad does not mean what a lot of people typically mean, which is like a holy war that is a form of jihad. But jihad typically are generally means any type of fighting against any type of oppression or injustice are things that you Personally deal with like, for instance, an alcoholic that's trying to quit alcohol, drinking alcohol, walking by a bar and resisting the temptation that is a form of jihad. If you listen to her comments and what she was saying in English, she was telling the students you all are the class of justice. She was explaining to them what they need to fight against, which is depression, racism, all this type of stuff that in air B that that situation that would be called jihad. That is, that is that is what Jihad is. I just think that it's being misunderstood that she's saying jihad, meaning that fighting, you know, taking up arms and fighting against, uh, invading government or are mere that's not at all what she's saying. So what she said in English is exactly what she said in Arabic. So the word jihad means a wide variety of things. How are we supposed to know? Well, it's the same way you all do whenever there's no Yeah, used shooting somebody I'll do investigations. Y'all, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I'll do your research, but, you know, I'm sure a lot of people already know this because Muslims all over the world have already told people this a million times, But it's like what people want to believe in what people want to, you know, do so right now. I'm fighting jihad right now because there is a crispy creams right in front of me, and I can't gain another prime. That's your personal job for this morning. Okay. Thanks for shot. I appreciate it, man. All right. 51283605 19 go to.

13 People Shot in Downtown Austin

"Radio goes one on one with Brad Paisley to discuss when he began to consider being a singer as well as a guitar player there was a time when I was just absolutely it was like some quick times in the same but I knew the kindest when I saw Steve roll through and he was a friend of my road manager it is now my roommate at the time I ten but he it was friends with Steve and interviews man I got to go see a play and I saw this guy who sang and played around stages plant all the leads and incredible guitar player and I thought all you can sing and is you know because there weren't a lot of that going around any kind Clapton and that's what I said that's going to be together place souls and sings a song rights keep listening to I heart radio for more Brad Paisley all your favorite artists all right Chuck so I think by eighteen fifty three they're headed I think in the eighteen fifties there's like this drumbeat to have a park everybody wanted to park yeah William Cullen Bryant was one of the big names who edited the Evening Post which is now the New York Post yeah and he was a well known poet at the time and and a beloved figure but you could definitely use the post as a platform to advocate for this green space now again there's a lot of understanding in this day and age that the wealthiest New Yorkers wanted this park for themselves basically yeah they wanted their new CD that they had built to to rival Paris or London and he needed a park they wanted to go show off their carriages in the park but they also advocated publicly for the park for the the working classes the middle class they should have a place to to come in and hang out and this is you know this is America of course everyone will be welcome it's a public parking will be America's first landscaped public park and so people really kind of got on board with this in by eighteen season though that was kind of a lie it was at least the first yeah but by eighteen fifty three I believe work started there was a central park that had been designated land have been designated for the Central Park by then right right and they had a a contest I believe it was the first design contest in the country lot of first that said designer park you got to have a a parade ground yeah get a principal fountain I can have a lookout tower you gotta skating arena sure get up for cross streets okay because people still got to get through there somehow or in a in a palace I'm sorry place for or palace one not for an exhibition or concert hall right very specific rules for this design contest that that was won by two gentleman very famous now the gentleman named Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux I'm goes well okay B. A. U. X. yeah our our vote but definitely not vox valves out six is always silent yeah those two submitted something called the greensward plan anyone with that name and they want for a couple reasons one Frederick Law Olmsted was the superintendent of central park at the time probably didn't hurt now but he was an issue and I believe his boss I can't remember like what position is boss sort of had his boss submitted a plan too early he M. vo they're playing the screens were planted they submitted was just so obviously head and shoulders above every other design that was submitted yeah that it was just clear like from the outset yes these guys should win and it was it's considered a a work of art still to this day although they actually went on to design prospect arc in Brooklyn lovely that's supposedly their masterpiece over Central Park is Prospect Park I mean I love them both yeah they're both great I've never been to either of them that's not true no I swear to god I've never a little park with you but I mean what so okay I walked like fifteen paces in Central Park right it was just like if we were in there for a long right that's that's really the only time yes wow I've never been in Prospect Park boy I have explored there's so much of it but I bet you I've explored seventy five percent of the bottom fifty percent of Central Park well I read I haven't been over like eighty six street a lot north of that but that's where it gets a little more while anyway and not wild like the parties but a little more little more wild as far as the design goes well very purposefully yes right okay I'm glad this appropriately because supposedly the bottom half of Central Park so the part with the park itself is meant to evoke New York state the bottom half is much more urban refined trimmed I don't know sure and it's meant to reflect New York City and then as you get further up in the park it's a little more wild there's parties in coyotes Allah you know Poughkeepsie you've never been to Bethesda fountain I don't believe I have I've seen everybody all night house without getting ring so many episodes reveal on order I can't distinguish reality from fantasy oh man I'm like so like I'm going into my memory of Michael K. turn your right is Lennie Briscoe standing there so is it on TV well I've never seen an episode of that so I guess or even what yeah I don't leave the show you've never seen an episode of the ten thousand episodes of law and order now you're missing out yeah Recinos and I was Briscoe's name Jerry Orbach those two man yeah Benjamin Bratt was a close second to the Chris military or bok thank and then it just keeps going on like they were so good at that all of them were just the media yeah a lot of stuff took place in Central Park so I feel like I've been here's what you do man next time we go to New York I know that we typically stay downtown yeah step by the park well it's just like get out in it I've developed a taste for the Upper West Side but put but not the park right you're so close I will go I'll take a helicopter ride and go out of my way I like Lower East Side in Upper West Side of my two favorites in New York I had the distinct yeah what is what you like Lower East Side I like it and I mean my very favorite part New York is the west village researchers things but I like the recital like it in the East Village the low grungy tonight is there such a thing as the lower west side we're all street now like well I mean Wall Street all the way down but I would say like if I mean I don't think it's called the lower west side like the meatpacking district oh okay yeah I like I like the highline the generally lower west side this was a really great art galleries in the meatpacking district well man play when I first started going to York that was when it was still shady about there huh and like you would walk through Mike blocks and blocks of industrial meat packing plants to get to like the one bar that was opened that would now wanted art of and then Giuliani came in so different now clean the place up well just thank god for him right so the design of Central Park greensward yeah like it's so hard to reason to go right now should this be a two parter I don't know let me ask you has our podcast got a more conversational this question aside hasn't it okay I do think we've always been conversational yeah but I mean like this seems like a unical of conversation well let me say this I think episodes one through four fifty or less conversations than poor fifty three twelve hundred okay but what about I twelve hundred on I don't know all right the greens would point if you didn't know anything about Central Park you may be under the misconception that they just sort of squared off in rakes and things around and that and those like there's the park right and like let's just protect the screen space but it was highly highly highly designed yeah and apparently they used as much explosives is what would later be used at the battle of Gettysburg he supposedly more to blast away rocking and move that rock you can remember the glacier that moved all that down that's a big problem when you're trying to build a park like planted hundreds of thousands of trees swamps that they couldn't drain they deal building further to build like yeah so it was and I don't think anyone really thinks that like they just balled it up and said now we have a park but I don't think I even realized how highly it was designed but as in which is probably a testament to their design because when you walk around your dislike it all fits right that's I mean that's the thing like there they went to a lot of trouble to make it look so naturalistic that you just assume that that's what the land always looked alright in Central Park is actually highly managed tightly designed green space yes that exists in a rectangle that when you're in the center of it from my from what is now in order you can't tell that you're like in the middle of the city and like the idea that like that the the roads none of them are straight they're all meant the curve there's meadows that kind of like go out of sight and there's voids the ramble like the whole would block and all that all of its design to just completely take you out of the city and plops you into this this world but it's just so well done and so natural that it seems like that's just what this patch of land always looked like well in cool that like even in an area today where that land is the most valuable land on the planet maybe yeah that they have protected those eight hundred plus acres now yeah and said you're not I don't care how much money you have you're not going to lop off just knowing we started at ninety fifth street instead right and like what's it gonna hurt yeah we could really use that area but now is protected yeah did you hear like the the the dude bought a two hundred fifty eight million dollar penthouse on Central Park yeah so yeah I can't imagine what else right ever sold in America in America yeah so but says the mountain before we leave that beautiful beautiful the founding work of art yeah Bethesda terrace it is a two tiered arm that's kind of the cool things is like it's it's low and you can walk from the from the top half of it just kind of gaze out upon that in the pond right behind it and then walked down the stairs and hear live music almost every day of the week it feels like sure but that was designed by Emma Stebbins American artists called the angel of the waters she was awarded the commission a very famous sculptor and we gotta gotta knowledge sure sure it's beautiful one of one of my favorite places in the world I've seen it they found a body and this is a loner so I feel like I've been to the John Lennon memorial so we'll see you or was it with you me because I'm almost a hundred percent certain that I've been to that I don't know because the only time I definitely was in Central Park with you I will we went with the former co worker who can a baby status on an early our marketing trip sure remember that person yeah that's the only time it was with us which would explain why he tried to block it from your memory here we.

Democracy Cant Thrive in Chaos
"Jane Fonda was arrested five times for environmental protest outside the Capitol this fall. She accepted a BAFTA film award while being taken into custody and photographs. The actor cast a striking figure in handcuffs in red will coat. It's a color fitting for the protests which are inspired by global school strikes and called Fire Drill. Fridays fresh from her arrest streak. The activists joined environmental justice campaigner and community organizer. Peggy Shepherd to record a live episode of Dare. I say in partnership with AMEX AT SAKS fifth avenue in New York City Peggy has been at the forefront of the Environmental Justice Movement in the US for a long time. She founded nonprofit organization. We Act for Environmental Justice in North Manhattan in the eighties. It helped low income New Yorkers in particular communities of color fight harmful environmental policies. It now fights for better environmental and health policies on a local and national level in the I live recorded episode of Dare. I say peggy and Jane discussed civil disobedience the green new deal resilience and why it is important for women to lead the climate conversation. How can we remedy empathy crisis? That has hurt generations of Americans. Why is the cult of rugged individualism driving climate disaster? What can older generations learned from teenagers at the decades on the frontlines? Peggy and Jane Have Not Stop Fighting. They are women who dare. Hi You know. We have a lot in common where activists arrested. But why have you decided to be arrested and to be active at this moment in time over Labor Day weekend? I felt great malaise because I drive an electric car and I do away with single use plastics and I make all those right personal lifestyle choices but I knew that they're not going to be able to scale up in time to get us where we need to be is a good place to start but it's no place to stop and so. I read a book by Klein that talked about a green new deal and talked about gratitude and it inspired me to get out of my comfort zone as Greta says we have to do and not behave business as usual as you know better than a lot of people. We have decades many decades more than forty years writing speeches and books and getting the word out about the science. What the science says. And we've marched and we've rallied and we've played nice and it hasn't worked enough and we only have eleven years left and so we have to up the stakes and I think we have to mobilize and go into the streets and put our bodies on the line and engage in civil disobedience and risk getting arrested. I don't WANNA BE ARRESTED. But you know you have to be willing to risk it so I went. I moved to DC for four months to win gaijin fired real Fridays because Fridays is the day that Greta and the student climate strikers have chosen to strike for climate so I want to support them and helpless their message teenagers today were born more than a decade after NASA scientists warned Congress about climate change in nineteen eighty eight. James Hansen told lawmakers at the time that he was ninety nine percent sure that human activity was causing temperatures to rise. Teenagers today have inherited the climate crisis. They have grown up. In a world of apocalyptic headlines and increasingly volatile weather. It's no surprise that they are extremely intelligent educated and now taking to the streets sweetest teenager. Greta Tonsberg inspired a wave of student protests across the world when she skipped school to strike outside of her country's parliament. And so how do you feel that? We really can motivate young people and youth to really be the strong activists that they need because they are going to inherit this climate this globe right now. What I'm feeling is I don't need to motivate them. They're motivating me. They're the ones because they see that we've taken their future not we. The fossil fuel industry has is robbing them of the future and we can't let them shoulder this burden by themselves. So Granny's unite. Older people have to get out there and and we have to stand along side them. This is a collective crisis that's going to require a collective solution that means all of us together because it is a stomach and we know that we can each take the issues that we need. Whether it's changing light bulbs whether it's recycling. We know that we can do all of those things. But we know that it's systemic and that we gotta come together collectively to educate our elected officials and to pressure the policymakers to really pass the kind of legislation that we all need. But we know that we can't do that with the message. Simply reducing carpet or a message. Simple energy efficiency. We've got a really embraced the values that appeal to all of our communities because Oliver Communities are not whole. They're not healthy. We know that millions of people in this country are living with bad air. They don't have clean water and they are disproportionately impacted by pollution and the Environmental Justice Movement has really for the last thirty years were to achieve environmental protection for all communities and we know also that when we talk about climate change and you hear people talk about climate justice. Climate Justice is not just a cool phrase. It's really a term that is focused on the most vulnerable communities. And how we've got to take action to ensure that the most vulnerable are protected because when that happens we're all protected and so we've got agreement deal and we know that that's been an important framework that's been proposed and it's wonderful that she was not prescriptive. Afc and the others who have talked about this framework we know that it has motivated sectors of of our country to get together and fill in the blanks. What they think is a green new deal what they need for their communities and for their lives and that's been a very important motivator. I think in this moment for a long time. There's been this rap that the environmental movement is white and elite. I think even Obama kind of felt that way but my experience is that that is not the case and then in fact people of color who live in the frontline communities have been very much at the forefront of the environmental movement and are the bravest strongest voices. It's a stereotype that people of color don't really care about the environment. Because they're really concerned with with jobs and food and of course we're all concerned with that but what? I've found predominantly above ninety sixth street when we have monthly membership meetings. It's not the more fluent Brown's donors who are coming out on these sites. It's people from public housing. We get so many calls about air pollution coming into their apartments about odors and emissions from trucks cars buses. We have worker training program for under employed young men and we invited them to come to our membership meetings to hear about issues of climate change or toxins in and chemicals cosmetics and they were able to understand the issue they were able for the probably the first time in their lives to talk to an elected official and tell them what they felt in what they needed and so it's about support. People know what they need. They just need some support to be able to advocate and to be able to. Maybe have a place to come and use computer. Have a place to come and ask some key questions. Let me just tell you that the upcoming mayoral public housing tenants are going to be a major factor in who gets elected and we're going to be organizing them and there's coalitions all over the city to ensure that some of the most vulnerable people are the ones who are going to be part of the solution and so I would simply say that the most vulnerable when we address them we lift all boats. It's not about trickle down. It's about lifting everyone up together and that's what creates an equitable and just society.

California governor Gavin Newsom says reports being prepared and the area secured with the entire process to remove passengers expected to take two to three days former FDA commissioner says now is a crucial time in the fight against the virus on CBS's face the nation Dr Scott Gottlieb said the next two weeks are key and he adds that the next two months will probably be difficult with the closing closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former
