Two College Football Powerhouses, an Angry Commissioner, and the Big 12's Uncertain Future

"So max. It's early august college. Football season is still about a month. Away has the news of the past. Few days really destroyed your final quiet days of summer. Yes certainly while to think that you know. Usually in in her line of work media days tend to kind of be that starting point for us of it's all downhill from there and coincidentally the big twelve just had their media days in arlington texas. A couple of weeks ago. Not a word was mentioned of realignment or fears of realignment or of texas and oklahoma being on the way out or on the fence or anything and so forever to go through all that sort of polite typical preseason talk and stuff and then within a week the world finds out about the scheme that texas and oklahoma had in the works clearly for quite a while here pretty jarring just for everybody. Well the reason why we brought you on. Max is to explain what in the world is going on in the big twelve and also these claims being made against espn and what to make of all of this. So let's start here. Can you describe how important the two teams that will be leaving. The big twelve texas and oklahoma are to this conference. It's really hard to some. How much texas. And oklahoma mean to the big twelve from a financial standpoint from just sort of a brand perception standpoint. These are the two powerhouses of the conference. They are always the two programs that rate the highest in recruiting the get the best players square. Marvin talented fresca. Certainly texas has struggled to win in a big way over the last decade. Despite having so many good players but oklahoma's one six street conference titles is the big twelve champion for the sixth year in a row for the fourteenth time in the twenty five year. History of this conference. These are kind of the tent poles of the conference there. The top of the food chain here in this ten team league and you know the money. They bring in benefits everybody in this conference.

"Everywhere. All right. Thanks so much. Megan, You have a great day. Here's my problem with with that is again. We're not addressing. The criminal aspect of this and we're not addressing the familiar familial aspect of the families where the families and well and he mentioned these young people get their hands on a gun because they're denied an education While these young people should also be Being guided by their parents by the elders in their family to not go that route, and so many are not right. That's how you end up with a 15 year old from Colleen. Getting in a car with others with guns and coming to sixth Street and shooting it up. And that's why it's frustrating. I don't think it doesn't matter to me all the resources that you could put on reimagining the police all the resources that you could put on banning all the guns across the nation. It doesn't change the criminal behavior or the lack of a good role model, and that's where I think you have to start. But None of the politicians. None of the parties do that. All right. Here are the numbers you can call or text with your thoughts at 51283605 90, Texas lawmakers continue the special session. They are ready to vote sometime this week on the new election laws. Governor Greg Abbott was on Fox yesterday with Chris Wallace, who kept pressing Governor Greg Abbott. Why do you want to make it harder for people to vote? He asked him multiple ways. Why are you restricting voting rights? Why are you making it harder to vote? Here's Governor Abbott's response to that point with 24 hour voting one thing that we want to make sure that we have is integrity in the ballot box system, and we need to have a poll watchers and monitors and Kennedy. It's hard even for a county to get people to be watching the polls 24 hours a day. We are providing more hours per day for voting to make sure that anybody Leave any type of background. Any type of working situation is going to have the opportunity to go vote so that 24 hour voting is something that Abbott emphasize that has really never been allowed before in Texas, but it came about in Harris County during the pandemic, and he says, We want to make sure the counties in the future don't go off on their own unilaterally. And create things like 24 hour voting, and I just don't understand that where Is there someplace in the United States that has 24 hour voting? I don't think so. I could be wrong. I don't know everybody's voting laws, but I don't think that I'm aware of No Yeah, so I don't again. This is one of those things that I don't understand why they're making that the issue of why it's harder to vote. As he said. We have expanded. Voting times. There's more time for them to go and vote and I saw that in this new legislation that they're working out. They they They have taken out the part about the Sunday waiting till afternoon or whatever it was that they were going to do to go and vote and still have those early morning voting hours. So that the not having the time now it's not an argument. It wasn't before, but it really isn't now. Chris Wallace also tried to press governor Abbott on the mail in voting. And the governor said. We want to make sure we have integrity and that part of the system we're not going to allow counties to mail out ballots to everyone who's on the voter list. People have to request them first, and we want to make sure that the right people are casting those ballots. We want to verification process so that the legal ballots are being counted. Even Democrats and the Texas House of Representatives, and they agree that as it concerns mail in ballots that is an area where improving the mail in ballot system. Is a way to achieve greater election integrity. So what Texas is doing is we're making it easier to vote by adding more hours of early voting, then we had in current law, but also making it harder to cheat with regard to mail in ballots. All right, that was Governor Rabbit yesterday on Fox 51283605 90..

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends and teammates during this difficult time. And oh, man, we had a big fire over the weekend involving some illegal fireworks in Austin. A lot of injuries over this fourth of July holiday weekend, most of it do with gunfire. You know, we we we Shot off some fireworks, illegal fireworks ourself on because it was within the the the county lines and, uh, us and just about 100, other people in our neighborhood, and I don't know Not Many people respect that, that that that law but but because there's fireworks going off all around us, but I hadn't really been up close to fireworks in a few years. And some of the stuff we were at my niece's house and some of the stuff that was being fired off, honestly. Just sounds and feel you can feel it in your chest. When it goes up. Some of it just seems a little bit too powerful. What are you talking about? What do you mean? I mean it just the the the the the overall Uh, concussion feeling a little bit too much for your grand seemed like Well, now it just seems like that injuries like this would not be uncommon now. I mean, it's just they've gotten so powerful. So incredibly powerful. Let's say sound that they were hard to buy this weekend to man. They ran out quick because of that shortage of the fireworks supply. All of all, the fireworks come from China. They were sitting in the loading docks in California ended. Houston still in cargo containers, according to the guy was talking to their own supplies. We just have a tough time getting a material here getting product to the to the location, he said. But I noticed some of that We bought We shot up there at Lake McCann in the the images on the boxes in the containers. This is made in China, right? And this is this is one of the big, expensive ones. I think it cost just like $60. And there's like 40 rockets, and it is just it's just truly amazing. But are the images painted on the outside A. Is it had Abraham Lincoln writing a grizzly bear? Shooting an A R 15 into the air. That's that was beautiful man. That was beautiful. It was I was like, Yeah, that's Yeah. That's freedom of Lincoln Riding a grizzly bear shooting his ar 15. That was the declaration on the outside of the package. None of us feel more free than we do when we're riding on the back of a grizzly bear that that right none of us. You got that right? But you you're saying your What are you saying? Grandpa? You want some laws in the books to limit fireworks? What are you talking about? This morning? You say you want to Shut down six streets and now you want to limit fireworks? Well, you agreed with me on that a couple of weeks ago, but apparently you've abandoned that, But no, I have not abandoned that. I do not think we should shut down Sixth Street in the terms the way you're talking Well, what we need to do with sixth Street. Obviously, as we have to make it. The goal needs to be for businesses to be able to thrive. I don't know how businesses thrive down there at all More police. Yeah, absolutely wall to wall. But what do you want to do with fireworks? I'm not saying I'm not calling for a ban or Anything. I'm just this is the first time restrictions And if you know, I'm not calling for anything. I'm just saying, it's incredible How powerful I mean, we're listening. You know, around our neighborhood, it literally sounds like a war zone. It's incredible it is. I mean, it is an awesome sound. There's no doubt about it, but I was just kind of taking them back at when you get up close and personal with these Fireworks that you can buy yourself. It's like, Damn, Yeah, I mean, it's It's uh, it's strong. It's strong, but it is fun. I'll give you that. But you Have you seen? Some of the videos have been circulating over the weekend people pretty upset about fireworks being shot in neighborhoods. I mean, there's been tons of videos over the weekend of, uh, angry housewives coming out and screaming at the kids in the street or Clinton is screaming at the fathers in some cases. Yeah, mad at the fireworks. You've seen it, right? So you've seen some of these videos? No, but I don't doubt it very angry. Meanwhile, let me listen, if you've got pets, Sometimes your pets are a problem with the fireworks. So they have a problem with the fireworks, and some people get very emotional over that. It's just not what it used to be that you had firecrackers. You had bottle rockets, and you had Roman candles. And and so that's the little stuff. Yeah, but but it used to now it's stuff that it was that was that mortar fire or was that was out of firework? I'm not really sure what I just heard, but so I don't doubt Did you get scared? Not didn't get scared. Alright? You second just impressed. I was impressed, Uh, made an impression. Just told me you've got to be a little bit more careful these days. You might get an arm blown off. You know, I'm reading through the comments. Yeah, This is pretty interesting. I'm going to find this audio here because she was pretty upset. Yeah, that's that's a neighbor. That's a neighbor in the in the Ticktock world mad because everybody's on the street shooting fireworks, and that's how she handled it. She went out, screamed at him. She wanted to stop. It was very angry about that. Literally just screamed. Yeah, from the top of her lungs out with words just screams. Well, she was She was trying to scream louder than them, I guess, but it was, uh I want to. I want to play the audio, but she drops a few f bombs and as the explosives are going off behind, Oh, no, but she's really upset. You might have had a couple couple cocktails..

"Thank you for joining us. Remember the brand new show Clay Travis and Buck Sexton is coming up next 11 to 2. And this evening we've got Dan Bongino with his really great show 7 to 10 tonight. There are new developments in the sixth Street shooting that left one person dead and multiple people wounded just a couple of weeks ago. What's happening, Melinda? Well, We're getting word that a press conference is going to be held a little bit later this morning with the district attorney Garza as well as the LAPD chief shit con they are going to give What they're calling significant update in there, saying, As of now they're dropping the charges against the 17 year old that they had arrested and accused in the sixth Street shooting. They said as the investigation has continued, They are now closing in on a new suspect. As of this morning that 17 year old tab was still in Travis County Jail. Um So, Yeah, they are going to give us more information on this a little bit later this morning, I guess maybe, uh, what? Where the investigation has led that has has led them to drop the charges against the 17 year old. Maybe where we stand on the Fort 15 year old? Yes, And who this suspect? New suspect is And if they have them in custody already? Well, and you may remember that the Mean teens from Colleen on Sixth Street, One of the teens said, Hey, I had been shot by the 17 year old a few days earlier in Colleen. And then we got into it there on sixth Street and guns came out and the shots were fired. Uh And so that was the background on it. There were a number of witnesses, according to the police accounts, and they got testimony, and they took the 17 year old in they took in the 15 year old and charged him. So this is going to be really interesting to hear what they have to say. They've got a lot of Halo cameras down there. They get video of things that go on. Maybe there are new witnesses. Maybe somebody changed their story. I was going to say I get a feeling. Maybe that 15 year old pointed the finger, this one if the story about him being shot by him Earlier is true. Still, maybe it was some type of revenge. I'll make you go down for the shooting in Austin. I don't know there. We don't know, And that's what we're going to. Hopefully find out in this news conference is what they have found in the investigation that has led them to drop the charges against the 17 year old and what they have on the new suspect. There were a couple of things it didn't seem to match up. Remember how the police said they had recovered eight shell casings from the scene of the shooting in all of them were from the same gun and yet They said they had witnesses and even participants who we're talking about more than one person pulling out a gun and firing. Yeah, that there were several guns. So that didn't quite square up with with the accounts. We'll see how that plays out will keep you up to date and we'll have a full update when we come back after Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, we're here Live in local 2 to 4 with Ed Clements. Would you pay a 16 or 17 year old 50 grand to be a manager at your fast food restaurant that seems like a lot of money for a young starting out teenager, But that's how desperate The restaurant industry is right now to get workers. Garrett Reid is CEO of Lanes, Chicken fingers, and it's based here in Texas. And he tells the Wall Street Journal that Melinda's right I'm so desperate to find people To help work in my places and manage my locations that I'm actually training some 16 and 17 year olds and they're going to make 50 grand managing my chicken places, and he says he hopes to get them trained up and get them to some of that experience, managing in hopes of being able to open some new restaurants. Down the line that they would then be able to oversee and run that location..

"Chief Chikane again. Overall, we remain a safe city, and I think that people should keep that in mind but also keep in mind When you come downtown. You need to be safety conscious. Down here in the 400 block of East Sixth Street, where motorcycles lined the roads because the Republic of Texas motorcycle rally is in town. Here's one guy going by On a Harley Davidson. People are just hanging out having a drink. There's really no way of knowing that there had been a shooting here 12 hours ago, except for the blood stains on the street. Yeah, Life carried on mostly as usual on sixth Street. During the day and into Saturday night, Lorenzo Bell was visiting from Houston for the RAC Rally. He said he was a metro police officer. Things like that happen when you get a bunch of people together. You know what I'm saying? Somebody go get Out of line. Never in my wildest dreams today envision waking up to to find that a mass shooting had taken place on our own sixth street in the heart of the entertainment district, and it is Horrifying and shocking. Austin City Council member Kathy Tebow represents the area where the shooting took place. She and a majority of her counsel colleagues responded by calling for greater restrictions on access to firearms. It's an area where they have a little authority. I will do everything in my power to make sure that our community is safe as possible. No one should live in fear of being shot when they're enjoying a night out with their friends. Advocates for increased police spending from the interim chief to the police union are using this moment to argue for growing the size of the force. Interim chief Chikane says the department has too many vacancies, although he said they had five shifts fully staffed On the night of the shooting. Opponents have increased police spending like the Austin Justice Coalition. Argue that Sixth Street on a Friday night is already the most heavily policed area of Austin. And they say, adding more officers will not prevent mass shootings. I'm Nathan Bernier in Austin..

"Now here are tired of Don. Yeah. Oh, my God beat that We're talking about breathing automatically comes out. Wait, wait. I hear that, and that's just right now. We have a male with a gunshot Want to just some of the scanner traffic between E. M s and police during that mass shooting there on sixth Street in the entertainment district, and police have now confirmed 14 were injured. One has died, and it was a tourist visiting from New York. A 25 year old man named Douglas. John Cantor and his family has Some social media post this morning really being critical of the de funding of the police movement, and his brother especially is pretty upset. And, uh yeah, So here we go. The search is on for an additional suspect. One has been apprehended in this shooting a juvenile. We're being told they won't tell us the name or anything. Police confirmed that one person was in custody of juvenile Sunday and have yet to determine the charges that he will face as of this morning. And they're looking for possibly another suspect that that is that could be a juvenile as well. In some cases, we don't know that for sure. But that's what they're looking for. You could join us in the conversation at 512836059. It's horrible news. It's hard to believe this is Austin. I don't recall anything like this happening in my lifetime. These kinds of numbers of people being shot in one spot other than the tower shootings in the sixties on you. See the tower sniper, and that's the only that's the closest thing. I can. Uh uh, you know, compare this to and then, In addition to that shooting on Sixth Street, we had Three other shootings on uh on on, you know, early Sunday or late Saturday in the Austin area as well. I mean, we're talking about, you know, 17 18 shootings or 17 or 18 people being shot over the weekend in Austin, and this directly correlates to when they just decided this brilliant idea to defund police and everything else going on in this city right now, which is it's just I do not Feel safe going to the downtown area. I will never ever set foot on Sixth Street again. Now there's also another element of this somehow easy are prosecutors and judges are when it comes to, uh, crimes that lead up to this kind of incident. No doubt about right. I'm sure this juvenile has a record. Let's you know, let's I assume he does. But also in the news. A Houston hospital apparently will be allowed to fire its employees who do not get the covid vaccination. It is required to work there and you federal judge has dismissed the lawsuit brought by employees of Houston Methodist Hospital who don't want to get the vaccine. District Judge Lynn Hughes called the lawsuit frivolous. The hospital suspended 178 employees last week and they could be fired now. The judge wrote that the public's interest in hospital capable of caring for patients during a pandemic outweighs protecting the vaccination preferences of employees. Adding the plaintiffs are jeopardizing not only their own health, but that of the doctors, nurses, patients and support staff at the hospital. The hospital says nearly 25,000 of their employees have already been fully vaccinated. Russell Scott TSN news Right There you go. Jump in at 51283605. 90. Bob is on the top of Don show this morning, Bob. Hey, how are you all doing this morning? Thank you. Um, look Wanted to share some information with you because I believe that it's going to be taken down off YouTube shortly. It's a miracle. It's been up there for three days. But I added, uh Todd last night on my Twitter Mhm because the podcast is called big, uh, the dark horse podcast. The gentleman who runs that podcast. His name is Brett Weinstein is an evolutionary biologist. I've interviewed him before he was on. He was on Bill Maher. Just a couple of weeks ago. Yeah. Correct. And he had two gentlemen on one of those gentlemen is the inventor of the M R n a vaccine technology. His name is Dr Robert Malone. Mhm. And he has some very grave concerns about the vaccine. It's doing some things that it shouldn't do, he can concerned about the adverse effects. He's also concerned about the pushback. On therapeutics that are safe. And effective. And If the inventor of the Mrna vaccine technology is concerned than I'm concern, and it's a long podcast, but what I would tell you is that there are there's you know, underneath it. There's always the description and sure, sure, yeah. And the timeline. So if you look at it, you can get to the information you'd like to see what was the one piece of information. What was the one piece of information that you took away? That was disturbing. Or, uh, Made you think a little bit. Okay. Here it is. The MRNA vaccine when they give it to you. It has a spike protein. That Spike protein is loaded into a fat cell that should stay in your shoulder and then your immune system goes to that area. Reacts to it and then spreads throughout your body. What he said is happening is that Spike Protein is leaving that area and it's ending up in places like the bone marrow and the ovaries. So that means that there are consequences for reproductive health and for your immune system. Every cell for your immune system is created in the bone marrow. What happens is when that spike protein moves to somewhere. It's not supposed to be your body reacts to it like the foreign body. It is. And that is causing these other symptoms. You know those those folks that are rug homes, not handcuffs. That's the name of the group. They put a bunch of tents around the city. We're getting word that now The police are down there, right this very minute taking things down. So so there we go. If you're in that immediate area, we'd love to get your eyewitness reports at 51283605 90 like the sound of that. Do you feel safe going into what? Downtown Austin. Maybe during the day you do. But at night at sunset, How do you feel about taking your family? You know down to see, you know, maybe it's something at the paramount or go get a steak dinner somewhere downtown. How do you feel about owning a business downtown? Considering the mass shooting this weekend barrage several shootings over the weekend in multiple locations. How do you feel about your downtown core city? Right now? We've been talking for years about dirty sixth. Yep. We have and dirty Sixth Street has the types of bars that attract, uh, different kind of crowd. It's just a shot bar. It's not just a bunch of college kids at all at all. No, I I agree with you taught. I don't think I don't think the majority of what you have on 63. They're going to be college kids. I think they're over in rainy. I think they're at it at the domain and elsewhere. Maybe other parts of downtown But but not 636 Street to me is, uh and I'll be honest with you, Uh, it's made up of a bunch of really not so great people, and I think a lot of really uneducated uh, folks I don't know associated with college students and tourists. If any tourism I think it's tourists who probably don't know what the hell they're doing. They shouldn't be there. Um I don't feel safe on sixth Street. During the day we went down to sixth Street where we're downtown for meeting a few years ago, we decided over the Sixth Street needed this pizza place during the day. We were costed three times by homeless people, and I saw things I didn't want to see all this before. We even sat down at the restaurant. Don't feel safe there any time. I've always thought it was by design the City Council. What really wants these shot bars gone on Sixth Street. You don't go there. Nope. I don't go there. I and in fact, I know very few people in this building that go to Sixth Street. Maybe some really young employees, possibly. But I think there is this this this thought as well behind closed doors at Austin City Hall, that how about we let the Let Sixth Street deteriorates a bunch of shot bars, let them just fade away and let them and then we transformed this area into high rise condos. Well, I'll tell you mean, they often say that they need additional housing rights. They often say we need more affordable housing downtown. We need more places for people to live. I'm just curious. There's there's not a whole lot of advocates on either side of the aisle. To support and prop up shot bars on sixth Street. No, uh, one of the issues you're going to have us for development, though, of course, is that the majority of those buildings down on sixth Street or historic, so they probably would not be able to be demolished in this town. I would rather see those things have the shot bars go away and turn them into thread, hopefully thriving businesses or condos. Yeah, I mean, turn the existing buildings in the Condos or incorporate those into two new development. Yeah, we don't need six street anymore in this town. We we don't I think again, Speaking of college students, I think the majority of those folks are on the east side of I 35 on sixth Street going to a lot of those new bars over there and restaurants as well Jump in at 51283605 Daddy out West Rashid in Austin on the tide of Don show this morning. Good morning. Good morning. How's it going? Good. What's going on? Nice. Okay. I didn't want to quickly terrified something. Okay, now, I'm sure a lot of your listeners probably don't want to hear this. But this is a simple truth. Jihad does not mean what a lot of people typically mean, which is like a holy war that is a form of jihad. But jihad typically are generally means any type of fighting against any type of oppression or injustice are things that you Personally deal with like, for instance, an alcoholic that's trying to quit alcohol, drinking alcohol, walking by a bar and resisting the temptation that is a form of jihad. If you listen to her comments and what she was saying in English, she was telling the students you all are the class of justice. She was explaining to them what they need to fight against, which is depression, racism, all this type of stuff that in air B that that situation that would be called jihad. That is, that is that is what Jihad is. I just think that it's being misunderstood that she's saying jihad, meaning that fighting, you know, taking up arms and fighting against, uh, invading government or are mere that's not at all what she's saying. So what she said in English is exactly what she said in Arabic. So the word jihad means a wide variety of things. How are we supposed to know? Well, it's the same way you all do whenever there's no Yeah, used shooting somebody I'll do investigations. Y'all, you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I'll do your research, but, you know, I'm sure a lot of people already know this because Muslims all over the world have already told people this a million times, But it's like what people want to believe in what people want to, you know, do so right now. I'm fighting jihad right now because there is a crispy creams right in front of me, and I can't gain another prime. That's your personal job for this morning. Okay. Thanks for shot. I appreciate it, man. All right. 51283605 19 go to.

"AM to two PM on news, radio K. O B. J 6 48 Todd Jeffries and don Prior. After that shooting this weekend Governor Greg Abbott. He tweeted out that Texas DPS is working with Austin police to respond to the downtown shooting and ensure that the perpetrators are captured and punished to the fullest extent of the law. He goes on to say thank you to a p d in the first responders for saving lives. Join Cecilia an eye and a prayer for those who were injured, and that sparks a lot of criticism in the Twitterverse heels hater. Here's what she reached tweeted afterwards in response to the governor's tweet. This mass shooting is your fault, Greg Abbott, You made Texas streets even more dangerous. You and Cissy Me may have. Well use your pointless prayers. For yourself. We don't give a crap. Wow, Here's another one. Here's Here's another tweet from someone named. Let's see. Laura B. Law Enforcement's specifically asked you not to pass permit list carry, but you happily signed the bill making no one safer. Forgive me if we don't believe that you really care about anyone that was injured or killed in gun violence and the people who respond well more that measures not in place yet. And this young man that's responsible for the shooter. At least being charged with it was a juvenile and wasn't supposed to have a gun in the first place believable. You know, it's it's just It's very clear what those toy truck there. People who believe that guns themselves are the big issue here. You're never going to change their minds that you're not and and and they refused to, Uh To really look at the big picture here. It's very easy for them just to go to Greg Abbott and and and blame him. They could not be more wrong. Here's what Greg Kosar tweeted out over the weekend, he says, While the uptake in gun violence here in Austin is part of a national trend, we know that gun violence is preventable. We must recommit and doubled down on efforts locally to reduce gun violence, reduce widespread proliferation of guns and save lives. That's what Greg Kosar tweeted out. And then Eric G. With his Baylor logo on his tweet, he replied. Mayor Handler in You have defunded police. Police numbers dropped emergency response. Time skyrocket and now mass shooting. You're doing a bang up job, comrade. That's what the Tweet says. Jump in here at 51283605. I'll tell you the see Greg Abbott. Uh, I'm sorry. Mayor Adler has has has failed misery. He failed immediately. His statement His initial statement about this was so weak. And and and it's so tone deaf and so wrongly directed. He and now City council going on vacation for six weeks just in time for this crisis situation we have here in Austin. That's paid vacation. That's Petey. Oh, man, the way that's PTO stuff right there. Sure, Hope. I mean, Cabo San Lucas is nice this time of year. It would be a perfect time to be really would. Oh, my God. Really would. Yeah. Well, listen best to him. That's to all the city counts, so some tells me It's Mackenzie Kelly might not be taking a long extended vacation. I have a feeling she might be working. She's on the job. You think I I don't know that for a fact, But it's just my gut tells me that she might not be looking at a place where she can just you know, get some sun. There you go. Alright. 51283605 prevention, starting a business downtown. I mean, consider the violence, the lack of police. The homeless crisis. Traffic gridlock. Yeah, this city council is is I don't know if that's their mission or not, but they're going to gut the economic core of this city. It happened in Detroit happened in parts of Chicago. You could say it's happening in San Francisco and Los Angeles, you know, around Skid Row for sure. Uh, yeah, the economic core of the city is going to be gutted. Why would you live work and play downtown? I mean, how does rainy streets stay safer than Sixth Street? What's the deal? What's the difference between rainy Street? And Sixth Street is six street just full of the shot bars. And and, uh and I don't even say U t students. I mean, some of UT students are mixed in there. But I'll be honest with some of those people that are in that crowd. They're not students in hell. No, no, I I'm let me be honest here. I think a lot of people in those crowds never got a high school diploma. Rainy streets, a whole different feel to me. It's a whole different vibe. It's a completely different type of bar down there type of scene. It's hard to specific, you know, and it's highly residential. Next as well. It's the bar that attracts it's the bar then attracts some of these kinds of people at the music. They play the cost of the drinks. They lure a certain type of crowd. Absolutely. And I've been you and I've been part of that business loosely for years, the bar nightclub scene not just here in this job, but other jobs. We You know what I'm saying? Yeah, you can. You could set up a bar and attract a certain kind of clientele. Oh, yeah. Yeah. You walk down Sixth Street, and it's mostly bars where you look in. It's like God. I would never go in that place. You walk down rainy street. It's a whole different vibe down there. You're right. It does start with that. And and it does attract a different kind of character. It is 6 53 here on the tide of Don show leader. Yeah. I mean, it's unfortunately uh huh. We have hotels right there in that area. Big major hotels, So people come to Austin, and they're like, Oh, yeah, Let's go check out Sixth Street, and that's going to be their first impression of Boston. Like Do you feel safe? No, I don't feel so Let's get back to the hotel or let's find out what this rainy street thing is about and get the hell out of here. Yeah, Going down to the Driscoll. You walk right out on sixth Street. Hey, all right to gunfire. Yeah, Welcome. That's not very inviting. Is this Yes. Chamber of Commerce Day whether they're still talking about expanding the convention center to Yeah, well, in the midst of all of this, thank you. You can't you can't. The City Council can't talk about expanding the convention center until you solve the crime and homeless issue until you give a reason for people to come here again. Democracy Cant Thrive in Chaos

"Jane Fonda was arrested five times for environmental protest outside the Capitol this fall. She accepted a BAFTA film award while being taken into custody and photographs. The actor cast a striking figure in handcuffs in red will coat. It's a color fitting for the protests which are inspired by global school strikes and called Fire Drill. Fridays fresh from her arrest streak. The activists joined environmental justice campaigner and community organizer. Peggy Shepherd to record a live episode of Dare. I say in partnership with AMEX AT SAKS fifth avenue in New York City Peggy has been at the forefront of the Environmental Justice Movement in the US for a long time. She founded nonprofit organization. We Act for Environmental Justice in North Manhattan in the eighties. It helped low income New Yorkers in particular communities of color fight harmful environmental policies. It now fights for better environmental and health policies on a local and national level in the I live recorded episode of Dare. I say peggy and Jane discussed civil disobedience the green new deal resilience and why it is important for women to lead the climate conversation. How can we remedy empathy crisis? That has hurt generations of Americans. Why is the cult of rugged individualism driving climate disaster? What can older generations learned from teenagers at the decades on the frontlines? Peggy and Jane Have Not Stop Fighting. They are women who dare. Hi You know. We have a lot in common where activists arrested. But why have you decided to be arrested and to be active at this moment in time over Labor Day weekend? I felt great malaise because I drive an electric car and I do away with single use plastics and I make all those right personal lifestyle choices but I knew that they're not going to be able to scale up in time to get us where we need to be is a good place to start but it's no place to stop and so. I read a book by Klein that talked about a green new deal and talked about gratitude and it inspired me to get out of my comfort zone as Greta says we have to do and not behave business as usual as you know better than a lot of people. We have decades many decades more than forty years writing speeches and books and getting the word out about the science. What the science says. And we've marched and we've rallied and we've played nice and it hasn't worked enough and we only have eleven years left and so we have to up the stakes and I think we have to mobilize and go into the streets and put our bodies on the line and engage in civil disobedience and risk getting arrested. I don't WANNA BE ARRESTED. But you know you have to be willing to risk it so I went. I moved to DC for four months to win gaijin fired real Fridays because Fridays is the day that Greta and the student climate strikers have chosen to strike for climate so I want to support them and helpless their message teenagers today were born more than a decade after NASA scientists warned Congress about climate change in nineteen eighty eight. James Hansen told lawmakers at the time that he was ninety nine percent sure that human activity was causing temperatures to rise. Teenagers today have inherited the climate crisis. They have grown up. In a world of apocalyptic headlines and increasingly volatile weather. It's no surprise that they are extremely intelligent educated and now taking to the streets sweetest teenager. Greta Tonsberg inspired a wave of student protests across the world when she skipped school to strike outside of her country's parliament. And so how do you feel that? We really can motivate young people and youth to really be the strong activists that they need because they are going to inherit this climate this globe right now. What I'm feeling is I don't need to motivate them. They're motivating me. They're the ones because they see that we've taken their future not we. The fossil fuel industry has is robbing them of the future and we can't let them shoulder this burden by themselves. So Granny's unite. Older people have to get out there and and we have to stand along side them. This is a collective crisis that's going to require a collective solution that means all of us together because it is a stomach and we know that we can each take the issues that we need. Whether it's changing light bulbs whether it's recycling. We know that we can do all of those things. But we know that it's systemic and that we gotta come together collectively to educate our elected officials and to pressure the policymakers to really pass the kind of legislation that we all need. But we know that we can't do that with the message. Simply reducing carpet or a message. Simple energy efficiency. We've got a really embraced the values that appeal to all of our communities because Oliver Communities are not whole. They're not healthy. We know that millions of people in this country are living with bad air. They don't have clean water and they are disproportionately impacted by pollution and the Environmental Justice Movement has really for the last thirty years were to achieve environmental protection for all communities and we know also that when we talk about climate change and you hear people talk about climate justice. Climate Justice is not just a cool phrase. It's really a term that is focused on the most vulnerable communities. And how we've got to take action to ensure that the most vulnerable are protected because when that happens we're all protected and so we've got agreement deal and we know that that's been an important framework that's been proposed and it's wonderful that she was not prescriptive. Afc and the others who have talked about this framework we know that it has motivated sectors of of our country to get together and fill in the blanks. What they think is a green new deal what they need for their communities and for their lives and that's been a very important motivator. I think in this moment for a long time. There's been this rap that the environmental movement is white and elite. I think even Obama kind of felt that way but my experience is that that is not the case and then in fact people of color who live in the frontline communities have been very much at the forefront of the environmental movement and are the bravest strongest voices. It's a stereotype that people of color don't really care about the environment. Because they're really concerned with with jobs and food and of course we're all concerned with that but what? I've found predominantly above ninety sixth street when we have monthly membership meetings. It's not the more fluent Brown's donors who are coming out on these sites. It's people from public housing. We get so many calls about air pollution coming into their apartments about odors and emissions from trucks cars buses. We have worker training program for under employed young men and we invited them to come to our membership meetings to hear about issues of climate change or toxins in and chemicals cosmetics and they were able to understand the issue they were able for the probably the first time in their lives to talk to an elected official and tell them what they felt in what they needed and so it's about support. People know what they need. They just need some support to be able to advocate and to be able to. Maybe have a place to come and use computer. Have a place to come and ask some key questions. Let me just tell you that the upcoming mayoral public housing tenants are going to be a major factor in who gets elected and we're going to be organizing them and there's coalitions all over the city to ensure that some of the most vulnerable people are the ones who are going to be part of the solution and so I would simply say that the most vulnerable when we address them we lift all boats. It's not about trickle down. It's about lifting everyone up together and that's what creates an equitable and just society.

another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former
