"I was in the sixth grade of school. I resume my studies, and it was a happy 20 years from the day Taliban came to Kabul on August the 15th. What was your first emotion? Hope? I told my friends two days before the fall of Kabul to be prepared, they will mocking me and said Foreigners are still here, and there is no way Kabul will filter the control of Taliban When the Taliban took control of Kabul. I was in shock for three days I was not able to eat or drink. I cried the law and was listening to the news, hoping it was a dream. I'm seeing I'm in a walled Kabul garden. To meet Jamshid, Russian guard 24 year old University student. There's presence of not to members in Afghanistan brought a lot of opportunities to me to my little sister after September 11th. I went to your school. This was a big opportunity for my generation. The NATO armies say 20 years is a long time. It was time for us to leave. Did you want them to stay? No, it didn't want them to stay here in Afghanistan forever. But what we want from them just was to leave Afghanistan responsibility. Do you think that you can live? A life. That you want here in Afghanistan now under Taliban rule. Absolutely not. I want freedom, but Taliban Don't want that, and that's so hard for us to stay here in Afghanistan and achieve our dreams. That.

Now the statue has been cut in half and the pieces will be taken to a storage facility. The granite pedestal is staying put. For now, its final resting place will be determined following the community effort to reimagine Monument Avenue. Just after a week into the new school year at nearly 1000, D C. Public school students and staff members are already having to quarantine because of covid this after more than 100, students and staff members alike reported a positive test for Covid 19. Our news partners at NBC, four were first to report close to 40 campuses are affected by the quarantines at Johnson Middle School in Southeast D. C. The entire sixth grade, has been told to quarantine at a media event this week. On Wednesday, D C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, praising the CPS contact tracing efforts for helping out there will be cases of Covid. And that our systems to detect those cases are robust and our systems to isolate those cases are equally robust. So from my perspective at this point, all of those detection systems and reporting systems are working, uh, the way they've been designed bells are encouraged all eligible middle and high school students to get vaccinated. All D C. Government employees must be vaccinated by September 19th or be subjected to weekly testing. Schools in Maryland to get Covid test from the state districts have to allow parents to opt into testing by sending in a permission form, something Montgomery County's executive says is problematic, Executive Mark Eldridge says the biggest problem comes when a student doesn't feel good. If her parents hasn't given consent to be tested. We will have to make decisions based on symptoms so he'd prefer an opt out policy, allowing more students to be tested, and he also wants rapid tests are giving schools rapid tests, they'll be able to determine quickly whether a student has covid Or just the sniffles. Unlike last week were nearly 800 students were sent into home quarantine with the decisions being made based on symptoms. But when the test results came back, it showed only 25% positive. Why States Are Sending Transgender Athletes to the Sidelines

"Katie barnes can you tell me a little bit about becky pepper jackson. Becky is an eleven year old girl. Who loves to run with her family. Favorite sport cross country. And the reason why i love it so much is because my whole family have always done it most nights especially in the summer they go out and run a mile together in through the rolling hills of the west virginia countryside. You remember the first time you ever ran for a long time Running with my mom when she was on the stroller. When i was in the stroller now troy and becky's just like every other kid except she's transgender heading into sixth grades. The first time she'd be able to run cross country for her school. She really wanted to join the team. But west virginia passed a law. That would have made it impossible for her to do so. A bill moving through the west virginia house would place new restrictions on transgender student. Athletes kabila supporters believe transgender athletes. Have an unfair advantage over non transgender athletes and so her mom and becky sued in order to get the right for her to run cross country with her peers. This is all stemming from a transgender student here in harrison county that wanted to run on her middle school cross country team. The american civil liberties union filed a lawsuit on her behalf. Mbeki's the only young transgender person who is faced with this issue. It's a sippy is poised to ban transgender athletes from competing in women's sports in schools and universities florida. Girls are gonna play girls sports in boys. You're going to play voice sports. That's what we're doing at least twenty four states at least twenty five states at least twenty-six states have now introduced similar. Bill's over sixty bills targeting trans youth. Specifically

Thank you so much that means a lot to me You know in starting this conversation today. We could obviously talk about the research stuff. But i wanted to start more at your own childhood because i think it's i get a real kick out of every time i read that you created intelligence test when you were in. Maybe even elementary school. Can you kind of tell me about that story. Sure when i was in elementary school i didn't created i did poorly on. Iq tests is a young kid. In the late fifties early sixties. They used to give iq tests every year to group iq tests. And i did very poorly on them and you might ask how i know since they didn't give us the scores. But when you get the test and you only finish one or two problems and everyone else's turn the page. It doesn't take a high. You realize that you bombed so when i was in sixth grade i was sent back to a fifth grade classroom to take an easier tests that they thought would be more suitable to my ability level and because it was a fifth grade classroom my was less afraid and i think i did better i in seventh grade. I decided try to figure out why did so much trouble when he just said. I did a project on development of the mental tests and i devised my own. I teach us the very famous thoroughbred test of mental gallotti's stone. Which i'm sure you've heard of in. It's so widely used still haven't gone along with everything else from winners

There's a but have done this from the three person team two now and every day i put on the paint and i think that's the difference and so when you're talking about i'm trying to figure out and make this decision. I have a handful of advisers that i coach one. And it's that's the difference. Is that bringing in somebody who has doing a circus show who is an phenomenal. Athlete is fine. But there's a big difference between that person even the people who put on the pain and that's a big big difference would put on. The pain is such a powerful statement. I cannot wait to talk to my team about that tomorrow. Because i just thought that's right. There's nothing in the world you can have the experience. You can have the knowledge but if you have both that that that's the big difference maker. Okay so you have. The maximum advisor podcast. Probably never in the show notes. Everybody needs to subscribe to that. It's freaking awesome. Okay i wanna thank you one. 'cause i knew you're going to be great guest you. I have a page of crap that i just wrote down from you. That i'm actually gonna bring the mighty which is why i'm so grateful for my job. I get to talk to people like you and interview them and learn from someone to pay back. I want to say thank you not just personally. We're getting you all sorts of shouts on social if somebody wants to work with you in any way whether that's you know learning more about signature you've got books. You got a book which. I have a excellent. I told you have it anymore. Say gave to friend of mine. What can i do for. You would tell everybody how they can engage you. Somehow because you're genuinely good person. And i wish you all success in the wall. I appreciate that the easiest place to find me is. I mean you can go to chipman dot com which is simple of all my stuff runs through there. But i'd love for people to check out the podcast. We're not for everybody and i've heard you say a whole bunch of times that one of the good parts about having a podcast is that people can listen. They can listen to place non-threatening an easy for them and they can get a pretty clear idea who you are and who you aren't and whether or not you're there kind of people for anybody who would want to know anything about me since your wealth group or anything like that. I think the best place to start is to go to maximum adviser. You can do it on. Itunes or maximum adviser dot com. Check it out. You'll we've interviewed a lot of people mad included..

"I won't say it's the least important part but it's the part that if you wanna scale. You can train other people to do that. Part so you systematized than the last to invest and by that i don't mean municipal bonds. I mean invest in your clients. So that is we have some some things that we do around that with the intention of nurturing lifetime relationships and finally escape so if you do those four things the last one is scale where you document everything you staff up. I'm a big believer in staffing before the before the aid. I can say that a hundred times but but you will be sad. Oftentimes if you don't invest ahead of time and then again you then you get into the ability to have aquisitions air and so the inorganic growth comes after you doing these other things. So that's that's how we built. Social group is by that systematized part the ruining the day-to-day practice most advisers are great at it. It's i mean again. It's kinda the next level of potentially commoditisation is that you know. So you have to work on your unique process but those other parts of the team building just ri- attracting the right people and and having you mentioned we've had a full time marketing person for four of the five years that we've been independent completely full time now. She has a staff of three. But we believe that perception matters and we believe that that content matters building attract in investing in systematic ways of growing your business and then scaling or the things that i think if you want to go from again and fifty to two hundred and fifty million to a billion dollars is those other things that you really have to get so i. I'm i'm thinking that i'm hearing our listeners. Say okay so. I joined the signature while strategies that singer wealth grew. I think you've done a great job with that. But i don't think that's still explains i'm gonna put you on the spot here. I don't think that explains this growth. You're good dude. I gotcha brother. I would love to and i plan on continuing our relationship wallpaper this podcast but that doesn't explain whatever percent growth that is year over year. In all of these people wanted to hitch their wagon. What the hell are you doing to get. Attract these people to your system and then having them stay if your mind. Let me talk a little bit. About what the system is right. So essentially there are. When i look at building a business whether it's a practice or because all our signature wealth group the group of advisers where advisers can affiliate or we can do an acquisition their practice or however usually that's kind of a progression right. All that is is an out spring of our original practice of the lab. When i look at building a business kind of the methodology that i use i call basis and basis stands for build. Which is your teen your vision. Your culture get really clear about what it is that you're gonna build and then attract so that's bring in new clients educate motivate which for me educating and motivating is you may call it middle of funnel in marketing terms for me than the where our podcast and blog commanded our podcasts. Because i wouldn't refer anybody here all. Oh my heart oh my heart goes chipotle brutal man so i love the fact that you focus on that but so so part of problem with right now is this idea of finding ways that people can accelerate their influence whether that's through their marketing through their growth and development as a company. Or whatever what do you think has been the the way that you 'cause you've accelerated your influence very very quickly. You are very influential. How did you make it to the people. Like i'm gonna join that guy because you are the face of the company right. I mean i understand. You have a whole company. However, they their focus on working with kids is always hook and personal narrative of what is your sort of Mac outside of school. It is not it is not how what is your GPA from sixth grade to twelfth grade? I mean, yes, of course that factors into it, but they constantly get kids into school that have gotten a couple of things here and there and things like that because their extracurricular activities are so strong and because of their passions outside of school are so focused. So I hope that that for the moms out there that are just like, how is my son ever going to get back into college if the grades are so poor or something like that or if you stock doesn't have this 4.0 GPA I can tell you from experience that that is yep. Calories: What are they?

Calories: What are they?

"Let's start with what a calorie is and how we know. How many calories of food contains a calorie is a unit of measure like an inch or a kilogram only instead of measuring length or wait a calorie measures energy. Technically a calorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise one gram of water by one degree celsius. Calories can be measured using something called a bomb calorie meter. Isn't that name. You might even have built a crude version of a bomb category meter in sixth grade science class. In broad strokes submerge in a bucket of water. And you put a thermometer in the water and then inside that submerged chamber you set something on fire. The heat generated by the combustion raises the temperature of the water in the bucket. And you can measure that with the thermometer. And then you can calculate the amount of energy or calories were in the thing that you said on fire so we used to use bomb calorimeters to calculate how many calories a given food contains these days. However it's much more common to estimate. The number of calories based on how much protein fat and carbohydrate food contains and those amounts can be determined through chemical analysis. Now when we're using the word calorie in relation to food by the way we are actually referring to kilocalories. Sometimes you'll see calories abbreviated as k cow. And that's what that refers to when we say that a food contains sixty calories. It really contains sixty thousand calories but all those zeros would be a pain to deal with. So just lop them off and believe me. This drives physicists. chemists absolutely nuts that. Why do we need to know how many calories food contains well when we they just food. We don't literally set it on fire in our stomachs but our bodies do release it's stored heat or energy and then we either use that energy to power our biological processes or if we've taken in more energy than we need we store it for future use if we habitually in more energy than we use we gain weight so we use calories as a guideline to determine how much food energy a person needs. We need enough to fuel growth and maintenance but not so much that we start storing a lot of fat there are calculators. I'm sure you've seen them. They can estimate your daily calorie needs taking into account your age sex height of activity level and then there are databases and labels to tell you how many calories are in foods however as james implies in his question. There are few problems with this system. First of all those calorie needs estimates. Can be way off. You can plug your details into an online calculator and be told that you use eighteen hundred and forty seven calories per day but look you need to take that number with a truckload of salt. Energy expenditure varies hugely from person to person. Even if you. And i are the exact same height weight age and sex and we do the exact same workout. You could burn four hundred calories more or less than i do. Every day and energy needs can also be affected by genetics body composition hormones drugs and a million other factors and moving targets and just to make the whole situation just a little bit more ridiculous. Those readouts on your treadmill peleton fit. Watch or diet tracker that. Tell you how many calories you burn doing. Various activities are only slightly more accurate than asking the magic eight ball. But wait. there's more calorie counts for foods are also not as reliable as you think those numbers that are listed in your calorie counting app represent average values foods so even if you are measuring or weighing your food with great precision well. This apple may be a little bit sweeter than average. That banana might be a little less ripe. This not might have a little bit more fat. Even for packaged and processed foods. The calorie count. That's shown on the nutrition. Facts label is just an average of variation of plus or minus. Ten percent of that value would not be at all surprising. Secondly those calorie counts are estimated using formulas that may or may not be one hundred percent reliable it was recently discovered for example but the standard formulas that were in use for most of the last hundred years. Were overestimating the amount of energy that we humans are great from nuts. More modern methods suggests that owens for example provide about twenty percent less energy or fewer calories than we previously thought

"Those are the ones to go to school. First, the high schoolers can learn from home. In theory, they're not, but they can. Yeah, theory, but they're also the ones that are cheating war, I think absolutely. And I don't know why. Now that you mention it. I mean, I know that they could learn at home, but they're not doing a very good job of that. I don't know why we're making it so difficult to get the high schoolers back in the classes. I would I would sure make that I would Because by the way the school year is about over. I mean, they're talking about these middle schoolers coming back in March. I guess that's halfway through the spring semester, right? If if, if only then we're going to start talking about the high schoolers. You're not going to be back in the classroom this year. That's what it sounds like. I can actually see having another year tacked onto education. I don't think that's a crazy idea, either. They lost so much, you know. When when I get to be King Jan, you're going to be in charge of this. So hold on. We're going to get your number and address. We're going to start sending the documents to you. Okay? I hope I live long. I do, too, because you're gonna be in charge of this. Is that such a crazy idea? Let's just tell everybody you're doing fifth grade over again. You're doing sixth grade over again. You really don't lose anything, Do you? Because everybody else will be in the same boat. I mean, some of you hold your kid back for sports. What would the harm be just telling everybody you're repeating your sophomore year? You're doing second grade all over again. If you're a parent of a kid in school, Tell me what I'm not thinking of here. Like if it's a race with Japan or China. I'm not sure how we win. Push the kids out the door with one less year of learning. And so 18 year olds going to graduate from high school in China and ours will still be in there junior year, but E think we can survive that. I don't see the harm in that right. Is that a really good idea? 3129817 200. Again. I'm not caring for a child at home, so I guess it would be one more year of your kid in your house. And you having to deal with that? But you're already doing that. I think some of us if we had a way back machine would like another year of our kids at home. And plenty of you will tell me that your kids haven't learned that much this year anyway. So what's wrong with just skipping a year? What's wrong with just saying all right? You're going to go ahead and finish the year. But then, next year, you're 1/6 grader. It's the same thing you're gonna do. Sixth grade math. It might be a breeze for you. Maybe we'll even tap into seventh grade math. Let's all kind of make this that gap here. And more. I think about it right. Everybody will actually do better next year, having ahead at least some exposure this year. It's got to be some flood this ointment. I can't think of what it is. They carry your on WGN. What do you think? Well. I'm a teacher. First of all, and I feel like instead of making everybody repeat. Why not Just meet everybody where they're at or do the best you can to me? Everybody where they're at now may be changing the curriculum a little bit too. A job race to push everybody ahead. Let you take this for what it is and give everybody a little extra time. So say that sixth grader I'm talking about will be in seventh grade next year, But we're going to scale back to seventh grade curriculum, knowing that they aren't that well versed having gone through a year of the pandemic in the sixth grade, right? I mean, if that to say that they aren't kids learn a different levels all the time. We have to adjust chickens in the bathroom all the time of parting of different levels. So I think it would be make more sense to just let the kids move on where they are. They've already been through so many different changes. And all of that, Why make them feel like they're involved? They're repeating a grade instead at and do the best you can. I guess it's some point, though we would hope And I guess if you're 1/6 grader, this sixth grader we're talking about. By the time they're in 12th grade, they will have had plenty of opportunity to catch up on the mist material, right? Scratch. All right. Carry a picture. Thank you Wanted 18 year old or, you know, 21 year old being a year below, like those big milestones. Being a different grade than the rest. You know what I mean? Like That probably doesn't make that much of a difference, but Don't know. My thoughts are just need everybody where they're at and work from there. Yeah. Where do you teach by the way? Occasion. Arlington Heights, Okay, you're not CPS. How are they? What grade? Do you teach? And how are they doing it out there? Well, I am at a Catholic school and I'm a resource teacher. So I do pull out for different kids in reading and we have been in person since August. Since we had a capital, although not have you had any outbreaks. How's it been going? We've been going very well. We've had a few classes that have had to quarantine for different reasons. We've only had a handful of students to a padded. None of the transfers have been through school. How many kids in a class at any given time? Well, they've done that, too. They done there's about 15, depending on the grade. 15 is the max for the up to I think third grade and then 18 for the upper grades. I believe I'm not 100% on that. But I think that's what it is. I got it. Carry lots of calls after you now. Thanks for joining us. Have a good day. You're welcome to the thing. Yeah. Take care. What about you, Phil? You're on the air. Thanks, John. Yeah, my my kids Air 1st and 2nd year in college and my thought on this is there's a lot you developed in and knowing yourself and your social aspect and and who you really want to be when you're in those first years of college and to have them be virtual Feels like you're really, really losing something in that concerns me. Yeah. I hadn't thought about the college kids because you're paying desperately for that, too, aren't you? Yeah, well, maybe an alternative for Mr Biden is instead of just forgiving college debt. "Old are you in this? Recounting your sixth grade or something? Yes. What were the Dumb or ignorant or wrong, headed things that people say. Two Ah! 10 11 year old kid who says I'm in the wrong body. You're too young to know what really annoys me because Like if I'm too young to know that I'm trends. How is assist kid? Not too young to know that they're not trends, right? And like it's the same like if someone comes out as gay or something. Sometimes people will be like. Oh, well, You're too young to know that. Yes, if you like. A little boy says he has a girlfriend like kindergarten age and they're like, Oh, my God. That's amazing, Right? So cute. Yeah. Words because it's just so core. Yeah, You couldn't not know it almost And like there are plenty of people who don't realize until they're a lot older on that's okay, Sue, and then there are also people who were realizing no super strongly from like aged to most of the time. Not always. But most the time people won't come out until later because Air conditioned toc think that they can't feel that way. They don't let themselves feel that way. Well, what you wonder about, you know the How much depression that would bring on if you were really It is dangerous to have to feel that unknown in the world. Yeah. You cut your hair really short when you were young. Yeah, yes, in I think fourth grade. Did you love being mistaken? Quote unquote for a boy? Yes. Yes, I remember One time my friends. Family invited me out to dinner. So I went with them. We went to a restaurant. And my friends like, Wouldn't it be funny if you pretended like we're siblings and stuff, and I'm referring like, yes, but I get to be the boy. Mm hmm. And it felt so good. Tell me about deciding That you're ready to change your name and you're ready to make it public. In your in your school community. I don't really know if it was me deciding that this is what I was going to do More than me. Just sort of thinking I cannot not do this. If that makes sense, like It was at the point where I felt like I could not. Function. Normally, if I continued like being referred to by a name I didn't feel comfortable with and as a gender. I didn't feel like I was on that. I wasn't And at this point you haven't worn girlish clothes and years and years and years. Yeah, the last time I had worn a dress was when I was like, nine. And then I continuously thought my parents until they eventually stopped. And how did you tell your school? Me the story of how you framed it for people. I actually wrote a poem about it. I went up and I made a presentation and I read the poem. And then I sort of explained briefly what it was. And I was like, Yeah, so I'm Not going by this name anymore. I would like to be referred to but he him prone, owns all of that. And then we passed around note cards so people could write down questions or comments they had. Yeah, And what did they write? I think I got a few questions about how it was possible how I knew. And for the most part, I got mostly comments about like how proud they were me. It was the reaction more positive than you expected or more nonchalant than you expected. Like, what did you expect going into like? Were you scared or were you excited, Tonto say Once and for all like I am not that person. I think a little bit of both. Yeah, I honestly expected to not necessarily negative because my school altogether is pretty good about all that, but I sort of expected more people. Just sort of feel like I don't understand that and well, there were some they were willing to understand and willing to try, which made me feel better. Yeah, it was people that I known for years had been in my classes for years. And they were like, Hey, I know I do not completely understand this. But you are my friend and I care about you. So I want to understand. I remember walking out and it was lunchtime. And then there was a group of kids in my class group of boys in my class who would always sit together at lunch, and I sat with him a couple times, and one of them looked at me was like like, saw me, sort of like walking around awkwardly. And was like, Hey, Alex, Do you want to come sit down with us boys table? Yeah, and I ended up sitting with on that lunch, and they just kind of treated it like it wasn't any different than if I Had been outwardly presenting us nail like since they first met me. There's the catch your boy, and that's just who you are. So you can come sit at the boy's table now, if you want, Hmm. So it was overall more positive than I expected. What's your grand parents say? Because I just think about generation like going back like an 80, year old and 90 year old 100 year old like It is 70 experience in there so You know that the growth and understanding Over the last 50 years has just been tremendous. It's hard to imagine what an 80 year old would think I was honestly pretty scared before that reason, but I'm lucky to have very like open minded grand parents and stuff. Um, and they were willing toe learn, Maura, and they also already had known some stuff. Uh, I think they had a friend whose grandchild was trends. I can't remember if it was male, the female or female to male, but trends in some way. Um So they had some experience already with it. They think they know people who are like gay or stuff like that. So it wasn't a completely new topic to them. Um, but overall, I was pretty scared. And when they do, they sent me a really sweet long text message. Um.

More Sheep than You Can Count: Transfinite Cardinal Numbers

"What are we talking about today. We're talking about cardinal. Infinity is obviously yes now. You you said infinity's the i love the title. If i may real quick the title of the show is more sheep than you can count obviously. That's an allusion to infinity. I love it a fantastic and the reason why we chose that is because there are sets of things collections of things that cannot be counted and And i mean there's a very real sense like not even all the real numbers right like not real numbers. All natural numbers right one two three four five et cetera. You can count all of them. Theoretically they are called countable because you can put them all in a list that has the first item at the first place the second item at the second place on and on and cover all of them. There are some sets. You cannot do that. With and one of those sets is the set of real numbers. And we'll show why on here but basically you cannot. You cannot list all the real numbers in any way shape or form. You will always leave things out any list no matter if it's infinitely long the really nuanced facts about infinity and that will we've we've realized in the field of mathematics and the last two hundred years one thing. I love about this episode. Though is i got especially interested in this topic when i taught sixth grade math. And what's cool is we're going to get into this in a little while but we had to do these socratic seminars. At the school. I taught out it was a charter. School and the kids started exploring infinity completely on their own and they had these group discussions that got into this and what i found a wonderful is there are. There's absolute overlap between some of their discussions. Like i think one of the topics that was brought up was does a circle. Have the same amount of points as a sphere and yes. I kid you not that we had sixth-graders talking about this socratic discussion. Not not everything was maybe correct in that discussion but most touches on the kind of cardinal anthony that we're gonna talk about today for example the answer to the question of does a circle have the same amount of points. A sphere surprisingly is yes and we will find out why.

"I remember, you know Quinton, I'd throw baseball in front of his garage would they had plate glass and I broke the glass and don't have a broken plate glass window on the front of my garage due to a boy related issue. Yes. Exactly. And I remember he was punished and I told him we were so tired. I was like, I will take your punishment, right and he was like, you don't want to take this punishment. Yeah, but that's how that's the relationship that we built this level of vulnerability and and love and camaraderie that we have for each other has continued to grow and now he has children are the best friend country has children. So it's amazing for us to get together to pour into the next generation of boys about our experiences that we had growing up and why we continually are so tight now I think part of it is what you said Jen about women women's friendships girls friendships are so different than both ways. We love you know, we can just sit in a circle and talk and we're just happy as can be and and what you said Charles is playing it's all comes back to playing and boys playing together, maybe not having deep meaningful conversations, which moms are always wanting to have with their boys. You know, when is he? When are we going to have those deep meaningful conversations and to recognize that birth? Poised that act of just hanging out together of just being together. That is the glue. That's the bonding. It doesn't it doesn't mean that there aren't those deeper conversations age appropriately but that the the glue is the doing together the playing together that is a wonderful wonderful description of that doing something together and going back to that length of time to form friendships. We did a lot together you think you know we were laughing we were going through our teachers that we had from first to sixth grade just laughing at those times with a lot of things because at that point in time you went from kindergarten through sixth grade in this basically in the same class..

Colombia's 'Cocaine Hippos' Must Be Stopped, Scientists Warn

"Colombia's cocaine. Hippos must be stopped, Scientists warn. Not bad news for you, but it's bad news for the hippos. Please tell me about the cocaine Impose. I'm curious. I am now firmly entrenched in my decision to go with the bad news first, cause it's got cocaine hippos. Pablo Escobar's hippos are taking over the marshlands of Colombia. This so called cocaine hippos were illegally imported to the country by the notorious drug Lord. What the rapidly breeding beasts have now grown to become the largest invasive species on the planet. So here's what happened. I guess Pablo Took control, and I should know this because I did. I did a school report on him when I was in, like sixth grade, which was a crazy person to pick. But you know, even back then I was kind of a baller. So when Escobar was killed, authorities took control of his 7000 acre estate, including a personal zoo. And here's what happened. Four of the hippos escaped. With no real predators. There are anywhere between 80 to 100, descendants of the Escobar's former pets terrorizing the country's lakes and rivers. Scientists have projected the hippo population could surge to 1500 by 2024. Hippos posed a threat to the natural wildlife since their urine and feces are toxic, potentially sickening other species and even humans, So what they're probably gonna have to do is that I have to kill the hippos They don't really want to, but they don't really see any other option. It's pretty insane. I didn't even know at first you hear cocaine, hippos. You think maybe the hippos have that habits or there, there were being used to smuggle cocaine or something like that. Oh, my mind didn't go there, but you know what your that's not about Take No, but I think it's just more of an ode to their former owner. It's funny, though. How a lot of those drug lords and a lot of crazy guys and history loved having You know dangerous pets. Was kind of like their bugaboo. They just loved it. The big tiger's big casts all that stuff. I'm noticing that trend

Building Confidence with Jonathan Van Ness

"Hello jonathan so. I'm a huge fan of queer eye and of yours personally because you're radiating joey all over the place whether it's watching you learn to figure skate on i g or your daily morning coffee boogie you. I really just love all of your content And virtually officiating a wedding. That was also very cool during quarantine so cool so we're really honored to have you on breaking beauty. Podcast tell us from your perspective like what is self confidence. What does it look like. And why is it important. Pay attention to. Oh that's a really good question. I think for me. Self confidence is so important because it will competence is like one of the central tenets of self of like being centered self and what that means is in the therapy that i've done so much of is like we wanna be self led like my idea. Being sulfide is like the person that like. Even if i'm late or things of kind of gone awry like i can still be calm. I'm not reactive inaugurated you know. You're centered selfish. Very like calm clear compassionate courageous. It's like really like the best version of yourself and so confidence is part of that in so when you feel confident that's like a really good indicator for me when i feel confidence a really good indicator for me that my centered south. I miss. i'm not in an a people pleasing my personality. I'm not in a irritated part of my personality. I'm not in like a overly work mode part of my personality. I'm like you know self-led fled so accurately talks about that. There's a lot of people in virtual eaters and spiritual thinkers who think who talk about being selfless. So confidence is such a big piece of that. But i think the thing that people miss the most often about confidence and i know that for myself i did too is that you can be competent and you can have a part of you. That feels really confident about something but then also really insecure about something else and can happen at the same time There's parts of you that feel confident but then there's other parts that you know are insecure about certain things and so the trick is is wet part of yourself. Can you identify with. Can you hear from that part. That might wanna change something or maybe doesn't like something about yourself and say look i hear you like i get it. I understand why you might feel that way about yourself. This is like you talking to yourself. Maybe we got those ideas from society or like something. That doesn't really feel organic to us. Like while i hear what you're saying i need to get in the back seat because actually centered. South is here. And we're not going to be berating ourselves today about that like expectation of beauty that we know that part of me has for how it's supposed to him kind of china mores in it by with this parliament industrial confidence about you know my heart may essence. What i do for my friends what i do for me. The only or feels like super confident about my face. I have i will say this. Maybe i am maybe really competent. But my face is like one thing. I've never been self conscious about like. I've always thought like a really pretty face like i've cobblers. I like i've always been like work. There's other so. I always looks like something. You feel competent. It doesn't mean physical thing it can be a piece of who you are and then just tried to identify with that. Because i think there's anyone who feels completely competent about everything all the time every single thing. Yeah i read in your bio that from a really young age like forever. You were out and i and i think about back then like what gives you the confidence to express your authentic self. Even from a young age. I say the include ryan episodes of like you know there really was like i could really be in a closet if you had like is in ears like if you were in my presence. You were very much like okay. Like i was fully fluid in nancy. Kerrigan kristi yamaguchi oxana by all geos zodiac sign. I also knew about everything about the electoral college in the presidential election of nineteen ninety-two. I really wanted to talk about i. Thought ross perot is actually. When i understood. I understood like the words. I didn't understand the politics of his leaks. I was i was really engaged in the world around me also just extremely feminine and i wanted to wear tights that i wanted to her off the shoulder. Things and i wanted to like run up to my dad's best friends like push them in runaway. Be like it was just exactly how i am now but if i do is coming out of the closet officially linked answering yes to the question of our i was getting asked if i was gade called gay and like just was asked to from such a young age that i think by the time it was like in sixth grade. It was like by fifth grade already done. I'm buying and pamela anderson's. I watch being watch like i you know but really it was david hasselhoff that i get enough up. "To our end of year. Moderator host show. This is the annual episode where we usually invite supporters to appear alongside us on the show. And this time we thought it'd be fun to have. Some of the folks who helped moderate are discord chit chat to join us and talk about not only how they use technology how they found s but also moderation in general joining us preston monroe aka bio cal aka w scotus. One beat aka beat masters. Hello and dan. Christensen aka sergeant muffin. Howdy folks. it's great to have you sarah. Who should we start with. I thought we'd start with preston that's cow and we're all going to ask you some similar questions but really the fun of this is getting to know some of the The monikers that. We're all very familiar with who helped us a lot with the show and kind of where they came to be so precedent hounded technology play a role in your life to this point. It's definitely played a role in my life All my life I actually got into computers late. Probably ninety eight. I think i had a purple mack. Was the first real computer i had actually previous to. That was in sixth grade at an apple. Two but i was There's a big gap in there. Where i was missing things but Starting with that. I mac and the internet i i you know got hooked just like everybody else did and but the key thing was i wanted to know how it works so i was viewing the source code of pages in one thousand nine hundred and creating and made gifts frame by frame before. There were tools for really doing that. Silly things like that but In my current role in banking and finance and i basically manage online banking mobile banking a digital payments for credit cards apple. Pay google pay things like that. So i'm just immersed in technology every day at work. Well you're obviously among friends on dtn s. So speaking of how did you get involved with the show I actually started watching tech news today on the twit network starting with episode one and watched it religiously or listen to religiously to through its entire run Up until the day left including after actually i. I gave it to go for about a month after that. But the new host just wasn't for me In the meantime Tom had launched daily tech news. Show and just kinda followed them from there all right. let's turn to w. scotus one. You may hear his name thrown out as providing things in the twitch chat willy. How did you get involved in tech. Oh oh that's interesting story. So like i've always been fascinated with computers from from a very young age I there's pictures that my the my dad took of Me messing around with Their computer was running windows. Ninety five back in the day so it's It's been a while But the thing that really got me into it and really interested. And it's like a weird angle. I guess but. I was messing in powerpoint. Actually and and just dealing with like shapes and being able to like make things inside a powerpoint like just fascinated me to no end and it's been an absolute thrill to To be doing it ever since to the point where i've At one point. I've been i. I offer tech support to pretty much everybody. I interact with on a on a semi regular basis. So it's really it's really great. Well we really appreciate you offering some of that technology acumen in our twitter chat and to our audience in general. How did you find us. How did you get involved in. Dns well there is a long story to it. but i'll give the short version of it so actually it was through. Lamar wilson. Believe it or not. I'm a big fan of Lamar big fan of all the big tech youtubers in the space. If you if you follow any of them you know the names pretty well. And he said hey. I'm doing a podcast called this week in you too. So i followed him over to there and that's where i discovered the twit network scarred chad which he's gone on to do amazing things as well And found tech news today. Finally enough right as it was winding down about two or three months before you left. Show tom which was funny to me. But i enjoyed it every minute of it and followed you over to detain s. Most of us won't be seeing vaccine until at least probably april may june of next year. And that's okay but we're not talking cove nineteen vaccines today. I'm actually talking about shingles this year. My wife and i finally decided to get flu vaccines for the first time. We definitely wanted to stay extra healthy this year. Heaven forbid as you get older you get sick from the flu and it gets worse than you gotta try to go to the hospital and with what's going on with covid nineteen right now. Don't want to go to the hospital so we got the flu shot and it actually wasn't a horrible experience. Great nurse practitioner. But she said to me of course because you're over fifty you ought to consider getting the shingles vaccine. Oh i had a horrible case the chicken pox. When i was in sixth grade and i was out of school for a couple of weeks. It was so bad she was. I'd highly recommend getting the shingles vaccine. I said well let's do it now. Can't do them at the same time. It's the flu vaccine. You gotta wait so now. It's suggested i get the shingles vaccine. Then we'll get the in nineteen vaccine now. I've said it before.
