Times Square, NYC Then And Now

"If you haven't been. I will make sure that you feel like you have. I hope that you enjoy this episode. You know new york city is fantastic. And i love it a matter of fact i have been there many times and i used to live there as i will tell you in this episode but i also want to tell you that it was in the late seventies and eighties entered the nineties. That new york city star to lose its attraction. It started to lose the people that came to visit and it star to be a real dumpster. People didn't want to visit new york anymore and so it was the governor's the mayor's and police commissioners started to take back new york city rebuild new york city one step at a time starting with times square in nineteen eighty eight is to murray hill in new york city. I lived in a three story. Walk up but first and second avenue on thirty first street not exactly prime real estate but safe enough. It was near the united nations and right above the entrance to the queens midtown tunnel Now you know if you are a new yorker or visited new york you know exactly where i lived then a couple of years later i found myself living in the salvation army apartment building for women. It was ideal. It served two meals a day and it was right across the street from the much coveted. Grammercy park the oh so glamorous and it was a close walk to eighteenth street between fifth and sixth avenues where i worked. I thought it was a dream. Come true and it was. I never really ventured to the west side past sixth avenue or anywhere near times square. Well that's what we're talking about. Today is times square and new york city. Everything i needed was right around where i lived but times square was unmistakably a major part of the city no doubt a black guy on the city a disappointment to the twelve hours of manhattan and somewhere that was to be avoided if wanted to dodge trouble darkness dealings and drugs. If you have seen the two thousand and nineteen movie joker with walking phoenix. Ps and by the way. I suggest that you might have an idea of the area and new york city. That was the cd and trashy times square. The closest thing. I can compare it to is a scenes in the movie joker to find a seedier place was difficult when they were filming. The movie and times square didn't look like does today so in the two thousand nineteen movie joker with no cd place to replicate times square. Really the producers of the movie had to go to newark new jersey a real old fashioned pit hole. If ever there was one to newark that was of the same timeframe as the movie never fixed up and never given a real chance to survive and today's society. It's a real shame but it depicts it perfectly times square where beauty came to die. No kidding in nineteen eighty six. When i was there there were multiple pornographic theaters and times square. The motion picture association of america introduced its rating system that included an x rating dip became associated with pornography. And so all the movies that were in times square were x. rated or the dreaded triple x. and everything was pornography back then pornography and. I should say drugs. The times square as a porn capital error was part of new york city's in the seventies and eighties amid its fiscal crisis. And later the crack cocaine epidemic which was rampant and it wasn't until the mid nineteen eighties that there was a push to clean up times square and new york city

"For no reason, memories of the summer of Nineteen, ninety-four surface in my mind. I had just graduated from. and was living out the last month of my off-campus lease the idol sunny days getting everywhere by foot. The sense of freedom mingled with fear because the only thing I knew about what awaited me was that I hadn't planned enough. Didn't know enough. It's strange to admit but sometimes I miss that summer terribly. I miss the innocence, even the haplessness of myself at that age. Twenty two. Still a child but believing myself to be something more. I miss the ways my then best friend and I played at adulthood. One Weekday afternoon we took a long train ride out to the beach. When we arrived it was lunchtime. So he sat down at a boardwalk restaurant for French fries and glasses of cold white wine. Then we took turns visiting the restroom to change into our bathing suits. I must've gone I emerging wrapped in a bright sarong nodded behind my neck. I remember the exact feeling of pride of youth of the pride of youth and the satisfaction of is upon me as I strode back to our table. A few minutes later, I heard the slapping of sandals as my friend made her way back from the restroom in a lavender one piece with high cut legs and a scooped open back. The sundress she'd been wearing was draped over her finger it waived behind her like a flag. I watched her as it for the first time realizing that her body had somehow raced ahead out of girlhood and into something else she seemed to feel it too and gloated in it on her slow strut back to the table. An. Older woman followed her admiringly with her gaze. And I felt something like fear. Fear rooted not so much in the fact that something was ending though it was. But rather that something real an. Was Beginning. Today's poem is two D be by Edward Hirsch. I Miss Your apartment on West Eleventh Street where I slept off the front hall and a bedroom that would have been a closet in another city. The plants breathe easily in their heavy pots, but the radiators knocked all night like ghosts trying to reach us from the other side. The traffic on sixth avenue was a slow buzz someone rattled a dog chain in the moonlight that bathed the school yard across the street. Lights seeped in through the barred windows. I get here faith rustling around downstairs getting ready for work. Unwilling to. Die. If there is a West village and the other world, we will someday meet there. I'll reach over and hug you will make you uneasy. Let's go for a bottle of wine at the tavern near the branch library, and then stroll over to Cinderella for Prosciutto and melon. You can buy a pack of cigarettes at the corner and explain the architecture to me. Maybe, I can stay at your place until I get settled.

"And then out west just north of sixth avenue between Kipling and SIMS next to Woodley. Okay. So it's car day today. Kevin Kalkin shared it auto tech, affectionately, call him uncle Kevin people laugh at it. But I just because of the as my one per customer. Okay. I'm not a customer told me he's big and cuddly. So that's why. And she said I can trust him. And then Mark was just talking about taking his car to him. And he has that trust factor. Honesty integrity, and he does something he suggests repairs that should that you are good idea. And then some that have to be done so he doesn't like hard sell you. He say this one might last or might not. So he has recommended repairs. And then what he considers riccar required repairs, and then we have Nick yahtzee flexed in Colorado. He just fixed a car for me. I'm gonna let you in on a secret. I dunno listening anybody listen. I rented a car once. So did Mark, I'm not the only one and there was a tie. Hiney Dinger to know in, I think, marks got into HALE, and he took it over to Nick because he would add to pay thousands, Nick fixed up. I had a little tiny thing, and I said. The real story, though with the kids. The kids that came to the door and said. Do you own that car? I says, well, I'm renting it and he said, we accidentally we're playing we were playing around in accidents. Hit it. Now they had to knock on doors. Find out who had that car because it was down the street. And I said, did anyone see you do it? No, how old are these ten twelve and in between there and I said boys, I'm very proud of you. I mean, why did you do it and the one kid said because it's the right thing to do man. You know how do you get mad at a kid? I wanted to say her, so I go out there and look at it, boom. Sony, Nick, he fixes me up. He fixes me up and fixes it. What twenty minutes, I you know, so things like that. People are listening right now. They have new car and they have apart and letting how much a ding like that the quarter-sized sixty to one hundred dollars. Think about that folks, and your cars like new he doesn't report Carfax. Now today. I want to talk about that and go to go right to the phones. But here's what I wanted to talk about. You do not have to report to Carfax. People say, oh, all you have to deterrence companies have to Carfax is not an official agency, like like the Better Business Bureau is not an official agency now Carfax has way more credibility. They go out. Then the better business rub that Carfax goes out and gets information, but you don't have to report it. So if Nick does repairs on your are he doesn't report it? Never you can report it. But you don't have to. Okay. I think in some cases it can hurt. You Mark had an accident once had the car completely fixed perfectly and they listed as major damage, why don't they put the part where it was fixed. Kevin you report because a lot of people want they can opt in enough out, but it's a good history method, I know someone asked you not to under your agreement. Now, once you, do you have an agreement with Carfax or not. Yeah. And we cannot dinner out. It's for each car. Okay. And why would someone not want it? Some people are just information phobia they didn't want. Okay. Now, let's talk. All right. Glenn, we just saved to home this morning for an elderly woman, eighty-five. This is what the troubleshooter shows about Glen talking about concrete. What's what's going on? Glenn. Well our contract with this construction company get built construction LLC get it built. It's called. Okay. I like it. Yeah, I liked the name. I mean, and the Cody is the person that owns this company, and he also works with a different name to as a classic Crete creations. Now, does he own both? Yes. Okay. Yeah. I called him under classic creek creations. But the contract we signed with get it built construction and his name is Cody. Yeah. Cody March, March banks, March banks, okay? So now what's happening? The problem part well, we, we, we sat down and talk with the guy and we showed him on a brochure what we wanted. He actually had the brochure. And we says we want this, right. Yeah, it was kind of a was stamped. Yes. It was a stamp walnut colored. Now, did you put that in the conch contract? No. But that's what he said, he does science San. But what does the contract say you signed for I'm just curious, okay? The contract that we signed said that it was trailed overlay trailed. Hold on, bro. Hold on. This is really serious. You pick the stamp, but on the contract. It says trout. Correct. Okay. Keep going. I don't know the difference. You know, I mean I'm not a concrete guy. So anyway, he said that he could do this, that I got you keep going. What happened? Did you end up getting traveled? Well, no. But in the contract that states that he will provide to sample boards for our approval. So we, we, we said, okay date, and he came back with these to stamp with these two samples. And they were nothing. Like what the brochure looked like? I mean you know there were nice looking, but are they stamped? No, it was a crowd. The difference. It was a trowel trial for those listening is a hand tool that makes swirls or straight lines. It's like if you picture a trout finish on stucco where you see the swirl that's a, that's a trowel, a stamp looks like fake grout, lines and individual stones or brick and it's stamped to look like that. Okay. So keep going. So anyway, I told him at that time. Yeah. When we signed the contract, I gave him. So wait. You, you sign the contract gave him money saw the samples rejected the samples. Right. So I gave him one last chance, I says, if you can't make a sample board that looks like just a brochure, then I want my money back. And so he says, okay. And so he comes back with a Meanwhile I told him that what I discovered that by looking at her front entryway, that I says, I called him that MRs Cody all this is stamped. It's not traveled. This is all I need is a stamp concrete, and he says, oh, okay. Well, I have to go and Doug a, let's do this. Okay because I don't want to hear this misery, as far as each step. What finally happened? The last step did you cancel. Or did he go through with it? That's, that's one or the other. Did he cancel? Or did he go through with it? No, we can't because he couldn't provide you with a sample to approve correct? So therefore key owes you whatever you put down. I would think so. And you shouldn't have put anything down. So how much did you put down ten thousand dollars? And what did he do it now he can't get it back? Not answering the phone, of course. And it's I hate giving you bad news. It's very unlikely. You're going to get it. If he's if he's a bum. It's unlikely he probably spent it. Yeah, my guess too. That's why tell people don't put money down. And if you must put money down there are specific ways to do it. Or you know there most of the time, I don't like any money down until the job is started. And you've approved all that, then you say, okay, let's sign you get the samples before the contract, not after his contracts is that I know. But you say no, I want it before you know, you're in control here. You're the customer. So here's what I want to know. Where do we go now? He's not answering his phone. You can't get a hold of him. He had by think it was his best speech ever. Honestly. I really do. I think is his best speech ever. Appreciate phone. Call my friend some screwed on this. Hey, Dylan, you're on KOA NewsRadio. Yeah. Curious I I've been driving from monument, and I just trying to sixth avenue going northbound on twenty five and yet to see a single snowplough from the department of transportation. Single plow. On the road protest over an hour now and not a single pow about an interest. So on the roadways, but a little curious as to why the lack of planning seems to be showing that kind of the worst our they have a hundred plows out. Now, my question is out of how many how many plows that we have in the state of Colorado. And I mean that is genuine question. I don't know. Yeah. I don't know actually work for the state government. So I can find an answer on that. But I'm curious about, you know, why exactly it's seeming to be no reaction with them at all. I cannot tell I can't tell you you find out and you let me know. I'll see your question and raise you my question. How about that? And I've got the button the push button thing artists. How are you artists? I am just fine. Mandy, you know, this whole wind chill thing. Yeah. I grew up in Ohio. There. I was born in fifty one seventy seven moved out here. Up until the last year. They don't do it anymore. Oh, okay. What you'd run the gauntlet on the ground? Yes. Yes. Exactly going from seventh avenue to sixth avenue, and you could do that all indoors so world's largest department Chauvet towards the sixth avenue side were all the case is fueled with perfumes and men and women dressed all in black would be like spritzing everybody as they came running go after you, they wouldn't say would you like spreads. They would just be like be like an Apache line. Finding your way through an Apache line. It's very dangerous. Some people are seriously, you'll it'll trigger headaches trigger migraines where you get some people would gag. You would see them they'd be. It's like almost like they were having an asthma attack. Yeah. And you wonder it and they said, yeah, I'm alert. Come allergic to these perfume. I would lie and say I was allergic is because I just didn't. I don't wanna hurt their feelings. Be like your perfume is horrific. Well, thank God, they stopped that practice because a lot of other department stores was shouting to do the same thing because remember back then Macy's lead mortar and brick stores are this followed. But you have a story for us. You could do I cannot do this story 'cause I touch with your feminine. I think my female site vacated me at birth. Why was just talking about? It was a story that I saw on the Daily Mail. I get a lot of my my content from the Daily Mail. Do they always have really weird stuff like this one? Perhaps the question in the headline of this Daily Mail story is should you be matching your perfume to your menstrual cycle. Now before you turn the channel just bear. With me. It's interesting because you know, through that through the time of the month as we call it, some call it I called it Martha some people call it two genera, I think marie-antoinette's used to call it that. But anyway, whatever you call it you go through different. You know, your body is there's lots of physiological things happening to you. And one of the biggest things is your sense of smell is at your height. It's not the most intense during that time was almost to the point where you have the dog factor right of a dog or a cat. Yes. The off like that. Factor. Whatever. For Tori, or whatever. But anyway, so like, for instance, at the beginning after the first couple of days when you're like all gotta die. Painful, then then your your mood starts to pick up things. Start to kick in. I don't know what these things are called. But they start to kick in. And all of a sudden, you you need they say these experts say that you need like a citrus smell that will help lift the mood. Yes. Citrusy type stuff, you know, like the perfume is it for you. Or is it it's tried to make you a of well at that time of the month. It's for you. It can help you become a happier. Better more feeling more helpful person. But yes, people typically I think put on perfume, not only to smell nice for themselves, but to ESMA nice for others. I have a problem with perfume. I do typically do not like perfect like Cologne. I used to wear do you remember Jupiter Jupiter? So good. I loved it. But I would wear that. And I wear Tom Ford. What's the difference between a perfume and Cologne? Well perfume seems to be a bit. It's it's always, well, it seems more feminine more florally and doesn't seem to have the hints of more. The I don't know what the sensor, but kind of the less less fruity less, wouldn't you say strong stronger than no that's complete. It's it's the sense the sense of the key. Yeah. Do you not wear Cologne? Not perfume. Never my father design. Not surprise me. No son of mine. He's gonna come in wearing toilet water. Because back then the popular aftershave lotion was old spice space. And then it became then polo was with all the. Right on. Yeah. Obsession that's what we were in high school, the girls we were obsessed with obsession. Did it work did it attract the guys? Well, no because I was actually quite heavy in high school. So I didn't it didn't talk to that heavy in high school. Yeah. I was like I was like at one point. I was about one fifty five on. Five five eight. But I was I was a little thick those little sex school like a milk. Wait, nobody ever. Nobody clarify. Nobody ever explain to you. What being sick? Like, a milkshake means nobody called me on that on numbers. One eight hundred eight four eight WABC it's all positive, by the way, my contractor, Tommy. Message and he said I will take Curtis. What do you do at that point? Well, I will tell you that there are some people that I have to come in contact with frequently. Once in a while, they were just absolutely overdone with the Cologne and to the point where I don't hunt them anymore. I don't I. You do. Yes. And what's that one? Sent that. Oh my gosh. Some some of the older folks are wearing this a little too much. It's the truly Grateful Dead. Nightmare. But anyway. What sick like a gymnast like a gymnast's body? Yeah. Okay. So Mike guy was right? It's not a pejorative remark. It's a compliment. Well in my eyes. It's a compliment. Yeah. I should. A compliment. I would say I think the we've lent to that in. Juliette speak would be well, she's like seriously toned, right? I mean, I think there is a little bigger than tone. Okay. Yeah. Little bit little bit. But you will look at me like with some kind of psycho sexual term. No psycho-sexual. I know. It's just that. They're creamy. Oh, yeah. I couldn't you figure that out. Well, because there's so many ways you can go. Thinking sexual things right off the bat attributed to me a negative comment. Connotation because I thought you were talking about I don't know. I well, there are a lot of things that I'm very I'm not aware of got on the line. Here is Craig from Warwick. The sand is slipping through the hourglass and though chase Santer will be dazzling. There's no doubt that when the warriors move something will have been lost forever. Thompson won the game on a strong put BAC of his miss after he scored he flexed his forearm in a fiery display. We usually don't get from the most laid back of the warriors main men. There was a buzz in the media about Thomson's display is he more demonstrative because he needs to be with Steph curry and dream on. Green both injured during the team's internal spat is he taking more of a leadership role is he feeling his prowess as he approaches neck summer's free agency. Why was he so animated Thomson explained knowing it's the last year in oracle? I'm just trying to enjoy every night and play with as much passion as I can. He said because I know it'll go by like that he snapped his fingers I won't be able to play in front of the same people, obviously. And the warriors will no longer be in the East Bay. So that helps me a lot Thompson said just realizing this is such a special ocupation. And we're so blessed with the crowd. We always have it so easy to get up. When there are twenty thousand people here every night and were selling out. I don't take it for granted. And knowing I was here when we kind of built this thing. It makes me enjoy it even more. Wow, simple words. But isn't it? Refreshing to hear an athlete voice. Exactly. What's important in sports? To know that he carries that feeling of privilege that he recognizes that he's experienced and participated in a special and rare thing building champion from the ground up and bonding with community we're so accustomed to sports stars taking things for granted for not really getting the role.
