A former navy reservist from McLean, who stormed the U.S. capitol on January 6th, 2021, and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler, was sentenced today to three years in prison on gun charges. The sentence imposed for hatchet speed in federal court in Alexandria was just 5 months less than the term sought by federal prosecutors. It is a much longer punishment than the one year term that was sought by speed's lawyers. Speed is 41 years old, a military veteran who held top secret clearances while working for a defense contractor. Students didn't get on the bus in either case. Police say in the Lawton incident, the driver was there for another pickup and no criminal activity is suspected. Drew, who spoke during a conference offered the first detailed description of a shooting that shocked the city and was notable even in a country like the United States that seems inured to constant gun violence. Dru had previously said that the shooting was not accidental and had declined to elaborate. Drew said he wanted to clarify remarks he made just after the shooting on Friday when he said there was an altercation before the shooting. He said it was more like an interaction between the boy and his first grade teacher at richneck elementary school, 25 year old Abbey's Werner, drew also revealed that the 9 millimeter handgun used by the boy was legally purchased by his mother and was in the family home. He said the boy brought it to school in his backpack the day of the shooting. The teacher put up a hand in a defensive position when the gun fired, and the bullet went through her hand and into her upper chest drew said. Although her injuries were initially considered life threatening, she has improved and is currently listed in stable condition at a local hospital. Dru Hales Werner a hero for quickly hustling her students out of the classroom after she was shot. He said surveillance video shows, she was the last person to leave the classroom. Drew said a school employee rushed into the classroom and physically restrained the boy after hearing the gunshot. He said the boy became a little combative and struck the employee. Police officers arrived and escorted him out of the building and into a police car. The boy has been held at a medical facility since an emergency custody order and temporary detention order were issued on Friday, drew said. The Justice Department is reviewing a batch of potentially classified documents found in the Washington office space of president Joe Biden's former institute, The White House said on Monday. Special counsel to the president Richard Sauber said a small number of documents with classified markings, were discovered as Biden's personal attorneys were clearing out the offices of the Penn Biden center, where the president kept an office after he left the vice presidency in 2017 until shortly before he launched his 2020 presidential campaign. The documents were found on November 2nd, 2022, in a locked closet in the office said sober said the attorneys immediately alerted The White House counsel's office who notified the national archives and records administration, which took custody of the documents the next day, since that discovery, the president's personal attorneys have cooperated with the archives and the Department of Justice in a process to ensure that any Obama Biden administration records are appropriately in the possession of the archives said, attorney general Merrick Garland asked U.S. attorney for the northern district of Illinois, John loch, to review the matter after the archives referred the issue to the department. Irrespective of the Justice Department review the revelation that Biden potentially mishandled classified or presidential records could prove to be a political headache for the president, who called Trump's decision to keep hundreds of such records at his private club in Florida irresponsible. The news may also complicate the Justice Department's consideration on whether to bring charges against Trump, who has launched a repeat bid for The White House in 2024 and has repeatedly claimed that the department's inquiry of his own conduct amounted to corruption. The latest in a string of Pacific storms blamed for at least 12 deaths soaked California on Monday, prompting evacuations of some 25,000 people, including the entire town of montecito and nearby areas of the Santa Barbara coast due to heightened flood and mudslide risks. The montecito evacuation zone was among 17 California regions where authorities worry a series of torrential downpours since late December could unleash lethal cascades of mud, boulders and other debris in hillsides stripped bare of vegetation by past wildfires. The mandatory evacuations came 5 years after mudslides from heavy rains struck nearly fire scarred slopes and canyons around montecito, an affluent coastal enclave 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, causing widespread damage and killing more than 20 people in January 2018, sheriff's deputies were outlying flooded roads in armored high clearance bearcat S.W.A.T. vehicles to rescue residents trapped by high water. The torrential rains, along with heavy snow in mountain areas, were the product of yet another atmospheric river of dense moisture, funneled into California from the tropical Pacific, powered by sprawling low pressure systems churning off shore. "That are so heavy? I can barely lift them, let alone an entire attic full of Christmas decorations. And it immediately just made me feel like a pretty terrible daughter because I knew the expectation was that I was supposed to keep all of this stuff that somehow one day I was going to have my own house and I was going to fill it up with the stuff and Our lives were just really different. That was never going to be my thing. So I'm standing there having this moment in the house looking at this dining room table, and my dad says to me, you got to go clean out the closet in the bedroom. In my house for my entire life. The specific closet was always called the closet that eats everything. And it was called this because if you lost something in my house, no matter where this item originated from it wound up in this closet like that room in Harry Potter, where all the missing stuff goes. Like a series of pneumatic tubes, like would connect the garage in the kitchen. And no matter where this item originated. It wound up in this closet a bit, like, lose a shirt and I'd be like Mom, Have you seen my shirt? Well, did you check the closet that eats everything? No, Mom, why would it be in there and she's like, opened the door and pull out the shirt is this the one you're looking for? Just happened more times that I could count. But The real reason that I was anxious about going into this closet was because it was also where we kept all of the family photos. And the scrapbooking materials. So I made a plan. I was not going to engage with any of the stuff. I was just going to sort the stuff because nostalgia is the enemy of all successful cleaning expeditions. So family photos keep one pile old unsent greeting cards throw away another pile. And that lasted for about five minutes before I'm knee deep in the family photos going through every single one of them, and I'm looking at pictures of us around that ugly table Thanksgiving. Rarely afforded to black people at the time especially in the jim crow south while mamie attributed her later career successes to growing up the she did. She was not shielded from the stark racial realities outside her home. When she was six years old she witnessed a lynching in an interview in nineteen seventy six. She described knowing she was black at a young age. She said i became acutely aware of that in childhood. Because you had to have a certain kind of protective armor about you all the time. After graduating from high school. Mimi received a scholarship to attend howard university. A historically black college in washington. Dc she intended to study math which she loved but the professors proved uninspiring. Then she met a student. Named kenneth clarke who encouraged her to try out psychology. Kenneth suggestion led to me means lifelong career and to their forty six year. Long marriage the summer after mamie graduated. She worked in the law office of the prominent. Acp lawyer charles hamilton. Houston it was there that she witnessed preparation for racial segregation cases. When she went back to howard in the fall for her master's degree in psychology she planned to address racial disparities in her work. Mimi's thesis surveyed one hundred fifty black preschool age children and set out to understand at which age black children became aware that they were black for the study. She and kenneth presented the children with different photographs including of white boys black boys and images of animals and other objects. They asked the boys to pick which picture looked like them and then asked the girls to pick which picture look like their brother or other male relative mamie and kenneth concluded that the boys showed a racial awareness at three or four years old which kenneth described as disturbing mamie and kenneth were on the forefront of a shift in the field

Are you having sex for pleasure for connection because you want to check it off a list obligation because you feel like you should write any of these things and i think about that. The same idea with parenting. What's the point of being a parent. Because i can't tell you. How do people. I ask that question. And it's like we'll. Because i really want to have a family have family with a dog or a fucking parakeet only baby for that like. Why do you actually want to be a parent. That's interesting and i don't even know that. I know the answer because a lot of time people are like while because i talk a lot about not enjoying playing with my toddler. I'm thirty six years old. I don't know why that's like breaking news but a lot of people are like well. Why did you have kids. Then if you don't like playing with them. And i'm like well. I'm thinking more like big picture. Not you know this two years when he's a toddler if you had kids just to play with them that's a problem yes or just for the love right like people that try to really have to get their secure attachment through their children and not through their adult relationships and so often you see that and it's this totally healing relationship for some people and then that kid gets older gets their own personality and doesn't need you as much and then people go through a huge breakdown of who am i now

I think just like watching pornography is something that has to be done in a measured controlled way because your brain will just take over ongoing to loop when it will become very damaging. And i think that you know. There's there's a lack of respect for anyone in our industry now because you know they just expect you to do anything and degrade yourself publicly. Humiliate yourself you know. In order to just carry on working and the public we may as well be in stocks and people throw things at us i. I just don't think it's the best part of human nature. I think it's i think it's quite distasteful and i i don't like it and i i don't think good for our industry. I don't think it's good for for the mind you. It's you know people should be free to do whatever they want to do. Cacao call must've libertarian. And then then so people shouldn't do this and they shouldn't do that. But i do think it's it's some it it'll it'll get out to control. It'll go wrong before it starts to spike up your that needs to be so you've come guiding voices. I like i was thinking about the other day. It was Is eighty percent eighty percent of. Nfl footballers go broke within two years. And this is after they receive millions and millions of dollars right within within two years new years of of retirement. God as like trying to like work. And i was like what happens. 'cause it's not like a lottery winner right. They often go broke but they didn't earn the money. It's like it wasn't ever real to them in a way but an nfl player you really earn money. Yeah and you really have to be put through the ringer phrase..

"You don't have to have the you just you don't have to have. That story doesn't have to have that. And i don't think it should have that why we doing. Is that going to be good. And i saw this documentary. This is a bit of a tangent with me on this about these. Things called Extreme homes and they're like think about like ghost house right where like people jump out. Ucla these are those. Except you have to sign nda's and you have safe words because they like tape up your head with a bag. They push your head underwater. They punch you kick you electrocute you things like this and they have thousands of people in their waiting lists and the most popular. One is the one that doesn't have a safe word. And you sign a forty six page waiver to go through this experience and this is real. This is real and it lasts for eight hours and no one is paid in. You don't even have to pay you pay you. Give the guy for tens of dog food and most of all of his volunteers and most of the people that are people who've been through the experience itself and i want to inflict on other people and there was a there was a there was a film. Wasn't there with michael douglas. And it was this kind of thing. But basically it's the guy ends up having to fight for his life he thinks everybody's out to kill him and Is it to do with relinquishing responsibility. Is it to do with wanting to feel alive wanting to is that kind of psychology behind. I think could be partly that yet I think he could partly be some of the reason that people want to go to war. You know to to like see proved to themselves that tough that they can overcome deal I know it could be something far darker some twisted part of themselves that they haven't reconciled the wants them to hurt themselves. I don't know it was shocking toward the weirdest part a film over this documentary. Like looking documentary right. I'm the guy who runs this particular school mckay manner. You know he. He his excuse for it was he'd be like unto getting the footage film everyone and and so that just be clips of him with this crazy smile on his face at the editing suite with screens just cameras close up in people's face people like drenched in tears. Sm- sweat mud begging to be let go and him just being like no no and he and he'd be like yeah and screams and he'd be editing like hours at a time you like. What were you doing dude. What is going on with you. I just like oh my god really weird. Mind you i watch. Sas something on the talia vote people trying to do the sas thing right. Yeah yeah the challenge. You have to try and we'll see another one you mean them and the guy takes you through and they end up you know crying and in themselves and obsolete hysterical and going to the most terrible pain. I should look. I could be. I could be badly asked to test score on a hot.

"I mean it's like everyone has access to solve the most violent shocking imagery. Imagine that all time without a filter. I mean i have to click a box that says yes. I very team but like that's not gonna stop anyone who wants to see. I think people. I think people want to see it. I think obviously there is a problem with with a how easy it is to access pornography seems to have got more more extreme. Yes it does on that you know. Clinical psychologists will tell you that it's having an incredibly detrimental effect particularly on young men But these these directors that are not young men these are directors. The i think they just they just get off on on the moment and it is very difficult for Actresses of any age to sort of stand up and say. I'm sorry i'm not happy with us. i don't think metoo movement has done anything i think there's lots of bells and whistles smoke and mirrors like you said and i. I can't see that very much is changed at all. I like to see that. If i'm in fact. I'm going to direct to short film. In the autumn and there there is one or two scenes In the script. That our about sex. But i will be very very very careful and they are. They aren't specifically needed because of what they do to the narrative. They're not they're not just bolted on their essential nerve that are essential part of the story but there will be no nudity. They will be it. Because it's like the. I mean nudity and sex toot very different things. Well human story going be about family. Life death everything in between the sexes. Like that's the middle of all of absolute. Of course it's part of the storm. I mean think about the most powerful people in the world lose half their wealth because they decided to have off with the secretary like it's such a motivating powerful ignore it entirely is almost perverse at that point..

"Maybe it was just the noises. Were well it was. It was just like no no interest on the radio. I do remember. It's just stage with me. I'm not what i wanted to stay. Worst i am watch videos anymore but in the early days of the internet. If someone send you video you'd just be like oh video may just watch the video. I've seen the most horrific things it's like. I'm scarred from these videos. That i sort of like executions or something. It'd be all like someone chopping the hand off or or or man being boned by. Yes which is pretty intense for the whole couldn't believe i kept his socks on the detail which didn't help them get a grip on the little. Maybe he doesn't need a grip actually would have stopped him. Dying maybe highbrow highbrow show. Yes absolutely absolutely but yeah i. I don't know how much nudity is needed. I think an awful lot of its third to titillate and went like. I mustn't age now. Where i'm i went through a phase of sort of not listening to young girls when they were saying things to me. Oh young women. I should say complaining about certain things am i would be like. Oh my god was worse in our day. I'm gonna just give myself a really good hard slap across the face and say look. Don't turn into one of those women that go because it was harder for me. You just have to put up with that. Listen listen to what they're saying. I'm what shocked me is that i think things have got worse in the last thirty years. Not better right. So there was a moment of reckoning. There's me too and as these horrible people taken away from positions of power or i don't think is changed and what changes. Nothing's changed so we have all this the smoke and mirrors and the but then day-to-day working practices. Do you feel haven't changed..

"That taxed if there isn't that perfect fit between what they're feeling what they're saying if that happens to me. All theater is electrifying. It's when you're trying to put stuff in between you stop listening if somebody's riding a unicycle. I'm not listening to them. I'm watching them right the unicycle. If if if if somebody's outfits stiffer somebody else's output. I'm kind of going. Well i'm a little bit. I'm a little bit lost. I should say. Immigrant is so good at shakespeare that he could've just stood on stage and just recited the lines and it would have been better production. He's that good so he was brilliant inhabiting the lines and stuff like that but the the choices would just bizarre. You have what you said. It reminded me of ood trained in russia for a little bit. And there's this expression in russia and it's all like vinnie. Pneumonia been ammonia which means like attention and one of our teachers was like you'll never shiva stage with cap because kept his pure intention audience. Watch cat it's yes it's true. It's true you yeah. So i saw production of antony cleopatra emotional at the national finds i i i just thought it was. It was a brilliant production. I loved it but at the end they had a real snake onstage. I didn't let nobody nobody nobody audience. Nobody was listening to a word. Real is real snake. Surreal so that you could. You could just the attention got so. I think you're chap with the cat was absolutely right isn't it. It's true to snake or baby. Has the same things like sarah baby or people taking the clothes off on. yes absolutely. I'm sorry i'm sorry. I want to play with my dang. You gotta be. You're going to be a little bit distracted..

"It was challenging in many many many many ways. But i found that my class was a problem And i didn't really realize it until until i left. I do remember one of the tutors. We had to have critiques. At the end of showings and things. Now i remember one of them saying to me. Does it bother you that you're the least well educated in your ear. I wasn't but i think. Because i was well she working to sumptuous made I've i've found that very strange. And i said well well no. I don't know how well educated. I need to be to be able to pick up a book. Read words that other people have of written down for me. They've done the work for me now. All i have to do is bring it to life. It's a different scales shouli in my career. I've often found that some of the best actors don't over think that purely instinctive and their instinct for script is extraordinarily because they're not layering. What's going on in their heads and what they've researched and what they've done on top of it they i. I am a lover of puberty when it comes to work. I think that an author wrote a script and knew what he wanted. And that's why he put those words into people's miles and that's why certain thought process works and others don't So i could be fashioned in that regard but i think there is an honesty to it that that audiences instinctively field and they get it and On a nice joyous. And i feel it myself when i go and see things you know. I was thinking because i asked you about one of the favorite favorite whatever. 'cause one of mine was Jerusalem just violent which goes dead now going to bring back okay with with him in the lead role again. How on the west end next year. So huge exciting but it was ten years ago..

"Because you know you have to have a little piece of paper that goes alongside and that means you have to have a degree you know. It's completely irrelevant to the profession. Like uncle to bachelors in acting okay. Great what does that do exactly nothing. So was it crazy or is it a romanticized version of the past. I'm looking at the training back. Thank you went to a very good school. yeah winter. I went to the guildhall school of mucus and trauma as we used to call it. It was Well he didn't have any coursework. We didn't have any written work that behind to do. It was a wild and insane. We had one actress who came in to teach us and she was kind of using psychodrama and she kind of broke us and left us and then off she went and then finally enough. She was employed to combat the following term. To try and help us it. Yeah we were. I mean you know spiritually and emotionally all over the place. We i remember doing lessons where we're at the end of the session. We'd be weeping so badly we couldn't go to the next session But yeah it was the yeah they were. I don't think i enjoyed it as much as some of the people dead You know yeah there was yeah it yeah. I often ask people. This is interesting. Because i've never met someone. Yeah who says that they. Oh yeah it was great. I i'm just waiting for that response. Because they must be someone out there. I didn't have the. I mean we call those trauma center. London i think everyone and again. I'm much more under the university. Banner where they have to maastricht about things that they're allowed not allowed to do as opposed to take over your clothes and cry and if you don't cry contact the kind of thing which i've definitely heard some stories like that even even with all of that is still was like god..

"Does this woman who's fallen asleep onto a partner's shoulder and he's like she's like starts to sort of like make. Those noises like shush she goes starts to snore a bit. Oh hey giggling. This is onstage being friends. Lady sir ridiculous situation but then she started to actually like vocals so she'd be like an half and so he turns to goes quiet. Jeremy and she goes oh fuck off and then goes over and push ahead on just a complete stranger who's next to her and starts snoring their camp the whole hints. Just like this. Because what was going on. Sage was completely uninteresting. Instead the center drunk thinks she was a trunk snoring. Was you know that kind of gets caught. It's gonna yeah yeah. I think she was drunk. And i think that should be on stage one. That's the one drawback of sleep in there. I did a a play call to see how they run. I think it was the second or third job out of drama school. And we were touring south at the war. Timmel theater newbury and then we toured and we. We got to account remember the name of theater. I can't remember the time. It was a seaside town. Prevent to so many of the and the matinee. So they were all sitting in the first two rows and by just before the interval they were all asleep every single one of them just got the giggles onstage and we walk with skip the yet we go to the end of the play of spurs we did. And she said do you wanna come and i. I'm an odd actor director in the. I don't like reading plays. I read them like reading them. I think they they're to be seen and people will all my god. You should you. Should you should read. I'm thinking well. I'd rather go and see it because there's a magic when it's a here and you don't go from the you don't and also the gross aigdirect when i read stuff. I have my version of how we think it should be done right. And they'll go and see shit and go. Do you know what. I don't like that. Because i really so So we went to see all my sons off miller of and i'm just blown away and it was such a joy other. Oh my god. There's this perfect jewel of a piece. And i've i've never seen it. And then i made the massive mistake of going to see it again when when it was up the old vic in a transfer or was it was a new production. I won't mention names. Big hollywood people in your and you came even being like all my song. I'm a goal that which again let the and of course they'd they'd they'd hunt an idea that they were going to look at it from a different. Oh let me guess.
