"The beauty of this draft week the best week of the year. His. Like holiday seasons. Yeah. It really is. So when we look at this draft Todd, what is the most intriguing storyline to you. As we head into Thursday night collar Murray. I mean, he's one of the most intriguing players we've ever had in the draft you think back a year ago, he hadn't even well technically started a game could be because Baker Mayfield was was suspended for one series. And he wanted to put the a sixty three yard run on that on that that game. But he really wasn't. He was just a backup player. He was signed to play baseball. He had to negotiate with the as to go back and play college football and start a basically just bet on himself. He made a bet he's got four point six six million dollars with the Oakland A's in guaranteed money with that contract sitting there waiting for him and he risks injury by playing, but he also takes a shot on on himself knowing that, hey, if I have a great year, maybe I can go. Football. And if I'm the first pick in the NFL draft, which he very well could be I could be looking at thirty million guaranteed. So that's a twenty basically twenty five plus million dollar bet. He made on himself that he's close to cash in is about to cash amazing story. I mean there guys I talked to the area scouts get as I was preparing for games this year. We have backed back games that they played Texas Tech was the second one. And I remember starting, you know, wanted to know because he was playing so well wanted to know if guys were area scouts what they had for terms of grades. What what they thought they spent time working on them and the two guys I talked to now now like easy going back to school and play for another year. So I'll have time next year to evaluate them. Or he's going to go play baseball next year. So I'm not gonna waste the time. I got four off of lineman for Oklahoma bunch of other players coming out from this class that I'm going to focus my time and effort on so even into late October NFL teams or even thinking about. Guy as a possibility. And now he could be the number one overall pick by team that used the tenth overall pick and traded up for a year ago to draft a quarterback. I mean, it's fascinating stuff. Yeah. Gamble that. No baseball team will ever take again this. You'll remember Russell Wilson was a test case for shorter quarterback. Yeah. And it helped obviously collar Murray this test case for the for the Oakland Athletics. What they did with Billy bean never allow a kid at you're gonna draft in a top ten with the have the opportunity to be a go play your football game a chance to showcase their skills. And you lose that Becky nothing. They got nothing in return for that pick no compensation but spend it forward to the question..

"Okay. What do you think? I mean, who who who are the ones what they ought right? All those boxes you say if this team has x y and z Murray's guy, which one. I think Jacksonville make sense from from this stamping that. And I you know with John deep Lippo he can adjust what he wants to do. But you know, you have a run game. You know, you have a defense, and if you can get back to playing anywhere near two years ago on the defensive side. Now, it's bringing someone who can who can add to the run game and doesn't have to be throwing the ball thirty times again. So I to me that one would make sense. And, you know, everyone says will you know, this place. They don't have an offensive guy that in some places don't, but Bill O'Brien came from the patriot way in justed his system to Shawn Watson, and you know, the from the verbiage to the tempo to the play calling and just the different things that Watson was doing in college and having success. He's a great example to me of a guy who halfway through his coaching career can say, you know, what we've got a swap out what we did. And we've got to do it to make sure quarterback is comfortable. And I think we're starting to see the league transition more as. The quarterback, and and really the college game sorts trickle up from the college level to the NFL, well and your mock draft Todd mcshay here on the rich Eisen show from or right around the Super Bowl time your second mock draft has Jacksonville and the Broncos and the Bengals all passing on Murray. Only to have the dolphins go and take him. What do you and put that together with the notion again that it's crazy to start tanking for player that's coming out? But what if next year what are you put together their Todd? You know, I I struggle with the first of all I don't think he makes this decision Cuyler Murray to to walk away from the four point six six million dollars with the Oakland A's and come to the NFL if he didn't get. I don't wanna say sure, but I think, you know, strong input that there are teams in the first round of on. Now every team I talk to and I don't talk to teams really have quarterbacks already because they they typically give an honest opinion. Everyone's like, there'd be nervous with Murray nervous because of the size nervous because the right system for nervous. Because if things don't go well early in his career is he gonna pick up in head over to play baseball and not even be with us anymore. So are we getting the full five years of us a first round pick on? So there there are risks involved. But to me this guy is he's a special player at the most important position. And what's the difference between an inch at this point? I mean. And everyone says always not thick we build, and and he doesn't have to wipe frame, and listen he stood next to multiple times. He's he's thicker and people seem to think he is small. He is gonna come in around five nine, but we've seen we've seen guys at five ten and a half to why can't five nine five nine and a half to it. And again, the last ten years we've seen quarterbacks who are six foot and shorter have a few of a lower percentage of balls bat it down, then guys that are Sichuan. In paula. We've seen the game changed completely with quarterbacks. Running more the most in terms of last ten years of quarterbacks have ever run have run was this past season by a large amount. And it keeps going up every year and quarterbacks throwing the ball at higher percentage outside of the pocket than ever before compared to inside the pocket. So again, the game is changing and it fits guys like Tyler Murray now, and you don't have to be that six four pocket passer to have successfully. Now, we're talking. What about Zion Williamson maybe sitting out the entire year to save himself for the college basketball draft? Even though we have not heard from him and coach K says he wants to play..

"Earlier, but I it's not a shock to me. So, you know, we still have the rights to him, but looks to be he's going to have a nice little football career. And and we are going to be rooting for them. Nice little football career. I like it. How about how about a guy who was phenomenal baseball player, but Marcus share market share, of course, Puerto VSBN. Now. What would what would he do? You know, what he did? He do the same thing. Did. If I would have been a first round draft pick out on the NFL. I just would have said no minor leagues. You have a chance to have even if he's a backup quarterback is entire career. You're gonna make thirty million bucks. Right. You know, maybe more. And I think it's one of those things his upside and football is all pro Super Bowl champ. And you know, he'll be able to you know to be as good as he can be on that football field to share yesterday. Stephen a Smith show. Huge news. I think about this. If you're cliff Kingsbury, are you not at least considering you have to be considered. Josh Rosen showed the world as a rookie. He was the fifth best first round pick of the draft last year fifth out of five. Are you an offensive mind hired for your quote, unquote, offensive genius? Going to take. Josh Rosen who you inherited. You did not choose. And say this is my guy because frankly, Josh Rosen is nothing like anybody did cliff Kingsbury has coached. Nothing. Is that who you're gonna ride with? Or are you going to put your Mark on this franchise? The Arizona Cardinals who could frankly use any Mark right now, positively. Trade rosen. I don't really eat get gotta think you're at least talking about it. I I don't know. That's not my business. And then draft Cuyler Murray and now cliff and Cuyler can go into the Arizona sunset together. Maybe I'm crazy. I do that a second. I will do that as ownerships gotta be on board. Do that in a second. Collar Murray football. No baseball, not a shock. Why? I love I don't even know if it's about money with him. Four point six six million dollars just to sign a contract with the as yes, he had to give back all, but I don't know two hundred ten thousand. I think is what the number was like that's the number. I saw from Jeff passan baseball insider. Because he's gonna make more than that football. I don't know if I love how do you not admire the guy, even if you're the biggest Oakland Athletics fan on this planet? How do you not admire the guy who doing what he loves the most good.

"The time is now seven forty five. It's morning edition from NPR news. I'm Steve Inskeep. And I'm David Greene. Kyla Murray can certainly play baseball. In fact, he was a top ten draft pick by the Oakland A's back in June. But he can also play football pretty well. He just completed a season as quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners and he won the Heisman Trophy. So what do you do if you're in his position to pursue baseball or football? Well yesterday Murray announced that he is filing paperwork to enter the NFL draft. And to talk about what that means for him. And both of these sports turn to Jeff passan who has been following his decision making process for ESPN. He joins us on Skype. Good morning. Jeff. Good morning, David. How are you? I'm good fascinating story of of this athlete. If he's if Murray's entering the NFL draft does that mean baseball's off the table for him. Not necessarily in that is the confusing in fascinating part of this whole story. The Oakland A's drafted Kyla Murray with the ninth pick last year and gave him a signing bonus of four point six six million dollars. And there is one caveat that he could go back to Oklahoma and play football for one year. It was almost like a parting gift for him. And the as thought that he was going to have fun at Oklahoma. And maybe throw a few touchdowns and be back in spring training and a fulltime baseball player the next year. Well, Cuyler Murray went out and had one of the statistically greatest seasons in college football chosen wins the Heisman Trophy, which makes everything. Harder. And suddenly now NFL teams are interested in throwing first round grades and potentially guaranteeing him even more money than he would have been making baseball. So you say baseball not off the table. Does. That mean, I mean, he he could be like a Bo Jackson Dion Sanders and actually play both of these sports professionally. I desperately wished that were the case as a child of the eighties who grew up worshipping. Bo Jackson and loving Dion. Sanders. I'm with the the rigors of quarterbacking in two thousand nineteen and the fact that coaches want you to be in the film room, all the time and learning playbook. It's just not realistic to think that Kylie Murray could be a quarterback in the NFL and a center fielder in baseball. Now that being said could he potentially place a minor league baseball in the off season in play football year? I want it to be true. I really do the the big question with Tyler Murray, though. It's not which does he choose. It's can he be successful in either. He has not played baseball barely at all since going to college. And the problem in the drawback with him in football. And the reason people are questioning his ability there. Kinda Murray is only five foot nine we haven't seen a quarterback that short in the NFL since Doug Flutie. So he's no sure thing in football either. Does this story? Tell us anything larger about sports in this moment. Yeah. That you don't have to specialize in. And this is something near and dear to my heart. Having written a book on baseball players blowing out there arms because they throw too much as kids and the idea that Kylie Murray did not himself say I have to choose baseball or football early. "Deal Trevor Bauer and number of players, but this changed in the two thousand sixteen collective bargaining agreement now because Tyler Murray has signed a minor league deal with the as with a four point six six million dollars signing bonus. What ends up happening is the as can essentially call him up to the big league team now and give him guaranteed money autumn majorly contract now that doesn't mean that Keiler Murray is going to be in center field for the Oakland A's this season. What it means is that they can say, hey, here's some extra money. We want you to choose baseball over football will still let you get seasoning in the minor leagues. But sooner than later, you're going to be up with us, and you are going to be our center fielder of the future. So what's the concern? In with that. Especially with someone who hasn't played a lot of baseball and whose future as a baseball player might not be so guaranteed in terms of skill. And that's exactly what it is. They are betting on the tools of Cuyler Murray. He's had fewer than two hundred fifty at bats at Oklahoma. And granted his last season, which came off of playing football really didn't have any time to play baseball and went out and slugged five fifty show. The incredible speed that we've seen on the football field convinced the as to take him with the ninth overall pick. Now, it was decided risk because the as understood we're going to give this kid almost five million dollars in guaranteed money and allow him to go back to Oklahoma and play one final season of football purely on a bed that his athleticism is going to translate to baseball. We still don't know the ace still don't know whether that's true. But what they do believe is that the kid his makeup in his skills are worth that extra money that it's going to take and they're having a concerted and decided effort Billy bean was in Dallas Dave forced the as general, man. Manager Barbara McHugh for major league baseball marketing executive they were all down. They're not talking money yesterday. But according to sources what they were doing saying. This is what we believe your baseball future. Looks like in this is how major league baseball as a larger entity can support it and part of that future. As we hear involves marketing. But on the other side, you look at stars like Mike trout, and you wonder where are these guys? I don't see them in national campaigns. They are not in my face every two minutes telling me products, but you're telling maybe Cuyler Murray that he will be this great star of baseball. So what does baseball have the offer to show that that could be his future that he could be this great star that they can't seem to make other players into that is such a legitimate question Ryan. And if you're Cuyler Murray sitting there and looking at the way, major league baseball has such difficulty growing stars..

"He has that that that signed sealed and delivered. But now we want to go into the NFL draft. So even without questioning his character because you, and I both agree that he has every right to do this. I don't think it's wrong for an organization as they will. Why won't you change your mind again? He's already changed his mind once. Yeah. And it helps him right now to basically straddle the line for as long as he can write he can still withdraw from the draft. And he still has the option of telling teams not to draft him or you can be drafted. And not report the as would presumably expect him to report to spring training February fifteenth, which is eleven days before the scouting combine start. So we could theoretically not even go to the convoy ain't got combine and still be taken in the draft. But he would be into a minor league season by that. Right. So there are going to be decisions that need to be made fairly quickly. And it certainly feels. Based on him declaring that he's leaning towards football. But there are rumors that that is just maybe a way of getting leverage to get more money from the baseball side of things and to say, this is very clearly an option that I have if I'm good enough to be able to get both of these offers. I'm going to get the most I cannot have you. No, one should begrudge him that and that's causing baseball to do things that they wouldn't normally do there is a you're not allowed to give a drafted player a major league contract. But essentially because he had already signed a minor league deal with the as they fast track the neck deal next deal. It's almost as if you've given an extension to a it's kind of like cliff Kingsbury actually to pick a guy who's a fan of his right without actually doing anything at the collegiate level at his job. He immediately fast track to a college to NFL job. That's sort of what's happening in Jeff passan. Our new ESPN MLB insider. I goal wingo. Kind of explaining how they were able to take a guy on a minor league deal that had not yet. Played a minor league game and fast track to the kind of money than a major league deal would offer. Whip Cuyler Murray he signs that that minor league deal for four point six six million dollars has been an Oakland day for more than half of the year now, and the circumstances that have changed our that. Oh my God. The guy was really good and won the Heisman Trophy and football is an actual legitimate threat now to go and get him. So we need to figure out how to keep him inside of baseball and giving him a major league deal in that extra money really is probably the best and only way, and that makes a lot of sense to hear the a great explanation of how it's done, Sarah. But I also look at it from Cuyler standpoint say why not go to the combine why not go to the draft. And then figure out what you wanna do like get the actual information of where a team drafts you. And then make the decision the hard part is that that that hurts everybody in the process. It hurts the NFL teams because they don't know how when he's going to be it hurts baseball because they have to sit there and start a spring training without. Yeah. I mean, it certainly is not ideal. But it's it will. Give him more information to us when he makes a decision, and I think most people I've heard talking about this are saying since it seems like he might prefer football to baseball and right now as a first round draft pick that's a nine figure. You know? There's a swing between the nine figures and baseball if you do well versus quarterback, money, etc. That if you still like football more try that I you can always go to baseball. The reverses much tougher. We'll Jeff passan ESPN major league.

"Claire for the NFL draft is today dies majo-. Fy winner is going to have to choose between playing baseball and the as organization playing football in the NFL. Here's our brand new baseball insider Jeff passan on the decision. Greeny the answer ultimately is going to come down to money. Now, the as gave Kyla Murray four point six six million dollars in signing bonus coming out of Oklahoma when they made him the ninth fifth, but then he went won the Heisman Trophy. And so in order to really sweeten the pot. They're going to have to put him on the major league roster. Give him an additional signing bonus. Now, this doesn't mean start with the Oakland A's does choose to play baseball. What it means though, is that it's an easy way to guarantee him money and essentially by him out of his football career, clearly his football prospects have grown he could be first round pick. But the as believe he can be a superstar baseball and in order to fulfill that destiny they're going to have to pay them to do. So. Start with this. Congratulations to the kid. He is in his remarkable. If Murray does chose baseball hits his ceiling, then that decision will pay off their seventy-five contracting. Baseball history worth one hundred million guaranteed dollars and football history. There's only been one, and that's Matt Ryan. But there are a million different permutations to this. And obviously money is one part of the decision. And there are a lot of other parts of it as well. First and foremost, the kid should do whatever's in his heart that he wants to do that that goes without saying, but as far as now, you're an NFL evaluator on him. He is small you watch him play. He looked short out there. They'll measure them at the combine. And that'll be fascinating. Are you concerned about the height? Of course. I mean, how could you not be? But I get it. The game is changed and all that type of stuff but five eight five eight so if he measures five ten some people be a little more comfortable with but but I'm not it's still a size speed league. You know, I know Dan, totally disagrees with me. But that's how I feel about it listed you see on your screen. They're listed at five. Ten a lot of people don't buy that. Again. The combine will be very interesting, Dan, you love guys are always listed accurately. Greening we can trust. I just when you watch guys throw like the you've got you can't just find people anywhere to like throw the natural way that he throws the football the explosion in his arm. I said this when he steps on an NFL football field. If he does he'll be as ethnic is anybody on the field. And we've talked about the game changing ten years ago. I would've sat here and said absolutely not. But where the game is. We're the rules is the distribution aspect. He'd be more like a point guard. And we've seen these shorter quarterbacks. Drew brees. I talked about this with Baker Mayfield last year. Drew Brees was so great because he's obsessed with it. Russell Wilson is so great because he's obsessed with it. Those guys have become obsessed with their craft than we saw it with Baker Mayfield this year. That's the thing watch. These throws Baker the throws matter. And I know if you're gonna tell me that this kid was two inches taller in a lesser thrower. We'd take him. He is in incredible thrower of the football. That has always been an always. Will be king at the position. I'm on record is like with Baker Mayfield. I have a lot of questions about him. He proved me wrong. He was a better throw or better better NFL quarterback than I ever thought. He'd be already. So to me. That's where I'm like. Golly. For years. I say new it heck of my take in this little little tiny guy to play quarterback, no chance. But right now this Baker Mayfield all these type of things he proved me, you know, he proved me wrong little tiny guy has one great big decision to make any has today to do it. So we'll see what he does. And we'll keep you covered on it. In the meantime, we get back to the Cowboys. They lost six straight game in the divisional round was their season a success or failure Steven coming in hot. But his next..

"Trophy winner. The fairly has been trophy winner. And he's got. He's got a dilemma that. We would all love to have you see? He is not only the Heisman Trophy winner. He is. Also, I think it was the ninth pick overall in this past year's major league baseball draft, and he got a four point six six million dollar signing bonus. But he won the Heisman Trophy. The question is. Will he or won't he? Shoes. Baseball over football or football over baseball. And he basically with the Oakland A's and all of this. He said the Oakland A's. I want one year. I you know, I backed up. Baker Mayfield who won the Heisman trophies. I overall pick went to. You know, went to the Cleveland Browns had a pretty pretty damn good euro, thanks consider. And he said I want one year and the Oakland A's said you got one year, and then when you're done, that's it. You're done with football you over here like, okay, cool. And then he won the Heisman Trophy. And people are looking at him and saying what would you do? What would you do you think? Okay. Baseball long-term you see the mass. I think it's one hundred some players major league baseball signed one hundred million dollar contract. I don't think there's I think there's maybe a handful that have done that in the NFL and the one hundred million plus plus plus in baseball. I mean, you've got guys like Giancarlo Stanton. Who are you know, three hundred million and right now? Bryce Harper is looking at you know, three fifty to five hundred million is what they're talking and he's a free agent. You got financials to think about baseball sounds great. But insane that not everybody makes it to the major leagues and you look at the financials of being a football player. What do you do his baseball signing bonus with the Oakland A's is four point six six million dollars that.

"Cuyler Murray has been completed all season. What had it tonight? Chilled this moment white the season this fall for Oklahoma's quarterback Tyler Murray earning a significant individual honor as well. The two thousand eighteen Heisman Trophy is awarded to Kyle Murray below this is. This is crazy. This is a this is an order. Something that I'll never forget it something I'll always cherish the rest of my life breakout season, certainly boosting his draft sake. But a higher. Of course. That's if he goes the baseball Rupe? Which is something. The Oakland A's are apparently expecting Murray was taken with the ninth pick of the MLB draft this past spring signed a four and a half million dollar contract in June, which a lot of the play football for one final season Oklahoma before joining the as the San Francisco Chronicle reporting the as are expecting Marie to declare for the draft. Prior to Monday's deadline ESPN's, Jeff passan reporting. The as were told recently Murray would not be going back to Oklahoma. Although the team still expected him to report to spring training next month the plan would be to keep him in major league camp until mid March the as then leave to start the season in Japan and Cuyler Murray would report to a ball in Stockton, California, Murray, certainly complicated. His future though, by leading Oklahoma to that twelve and two record and a spot in the college football playoff. And of course, the Heisman our Mel kiper. And Todd mcshay have noted Murray could be a first round pick. Insider Chris Mortensen reporting Murray is getting first round feedback around the NFL ESPN insider, Dan Graziano, I think there's a legitimate chance based on the people. I've talked to the Cuyler Murray if the enters the draft would be a first round NFL draft pick and part of the reason is just the simple money aspect of it. His baseball signing bonus with the Oakland A's is four point six six million dollars that.

"I think that something me and my family will talk about at the end of the season and way out the options of what the NFL thinks of me. Cuyler Murray on his impending decision of either accepting his four point six six million dollar signing bonus and joining the Oakland A's or pursuing a hypothetical NFL career today. Notably collar was named the player of the year the betting favorite for the Heisman. You think his mind is kind of starting to change? I'm starting to think that his mind was never made up in the first place or his mind was made up in this way. Please fill me. I'll be a first round, right? If you tell me, I will be first round pick. I will come in play football because I would really really really liked to play football. I'm just not at the point yet of believing that five foot ten listed quarterback is going to be a first round pick in spite of how dynamic and talented. He is. But I think he would rather play football. It's just a matter. Whether somebody's gonna make a word is while it is interesting to examine the rhetoric that we've seen and heard from him because his agent, by the way is Scott Boris like Scott Boras knows how to create a Mark. Place. He knows that maybe insuring the four point six six million dollars from the as getting that in hand is Steph one step two is where this kind of gets interesting because I don't know if it's an ally manning thing like I don't want to be in San Diego. I don't know if he has a favorite city. I don't know if it's a first round thing. All I know is that if that is the rationale for why you would actually go and play football. Like, you're not concerned about yourself in the way that I think we are concerned about him. It's about your health, man. Well, once you though Scott Boras in there that gets interesting because I never heard has got Boris represented. No football player, which is to say that accounta- very went to play football. I'm pretty sure he would go get a different agent. Scott Boras really ain't trying to hear from that. But wait till we start getting those leaks about how calamari K read a defense. That's from Scott eight about to get money to somebody else. What are you crazy? You will make giant binder he will have mystery teams. But also do that coming up next good John wall? Perhaps go to the Knicks old. That's on the table. This is that on the table in any way that happening. Does. He look like Bo Jackson. You did that ad? He looked like Bo Jackson to you know. Okay. He's my highs major though today's number. One hundred seventy million dollars. That is how much is left on John wall's contract once four year extension kicks in beginning season. But the New York Post reports quote some in the league believed the Knicks are stocking up their young assets. And we'll make a major play for wall and can comes vailable and quote, Don wall in this city, a good idea that depends on who you're talking about. Is it a good idea for John wall? Probably not is it a good idea for the Knicks. Probably not is it a good idea for me. That I have ever heard if we get John wall up here ticketed late at night all the time and refusing to answer a question with anything other than what he actually thinks. That's right. You put that in New York that will be so much fun. So dumb for the Knicks. So cool us terrible for the next. But we talk about legends at the Bank. He a legend at the club. Please roll the video boat in New York City in New York and around New York as we get to look at some archival John wall birthday footage. If you could please put up there, it is this dude had a birthday party. His your boy, Drake. Absolutely. There's numidian there. There's a there's a mellow in there that the JR switz-. Everybody Swiss pizzas there. The point is this is still a legend in the city. John wall twenty-first at greenhouse which is what we're watching footage of. But there's also video of his twenty seventh birthday party. The guy is just out here in ways that like if you have a sugar addiction Bill you don't invite someone to go to the chocolate factory. And that's kind of what this feels..
