Scrape Off Some Soil Before Bringing Plants Indoors.

"And I I know Bringing your plants indoors. You gave me a tip I. This time of year I always remind you. Use it every year and it was just a few years ago and you said before you bring them in scrape some of the soil off the top of the right underneath the plant. Yes mark and it. It is not a sure situation. It would not work in a great big greenhouse but for us with relatively fewer pots and things I like to I actually it's a little set of garden tools handles about six inches long one is a rake one's a shovel and not forgotten right now the other, but I like to rake off that top. Oh, no more than quarter inch, even eight inch that will be picking up many of the shed. Body parts of little tiny insects. It will also without a doubt help clean up the lick the eggs I'm sorry that have been laid into that soil over the summer. Then you could simply rest the top of the pot with. The same deft of new potting. Soil. Not. Garden. Soil. potting soil and yeah, I. Think it really helps with some of the

Thoughts on the new Pixel phones

"Today's kind of an interesting episode because we really did know almost all the details. Ahead of last week's announcement. So some of the details that we're going to give you you've heard before there is some new stuff in here but. And there was little to no, there were no surprises, right I mean. I guess there were a couple of like software surprises when you're talking about the Pixel Five, right? Like there was no, we got I can't believe. I can't fool the I can't believe they did this. Yeah totally. The one thing that. What did you guys think it'd be event itself. Random. Oh Yeah I would say that. The launch in event seemed very chill for them. They seem really confident in in a different way. So they weren't hyping things up or blowing things out of proportion. There was just kinda like, Hey, yeah. We're releasing a few devices and you hope you like them and that probably fit what they are actually launching. So I thought they didn't. Then, also probably fits the tone of the world. Yeah. Right because nobody nobody's really shooting fireworks and making a big deal about things. The more modest humble like here's what we got approach I. think that's a good. Time for more than half an hour of a soiree like listening in to tech event plus like. Virtual schooling the kids that's nobody offer. So right? Yeah. It was only half an hour and I have to say I was pretty happy about. Like all right cool they got in, they made the announcement and like like we said, you know a couple of times. Now, we already kind of knew everything google new. We already knew everything they really were light on details in the event I thought was really interesting like, yes, it was short. They announced four main devices which we're to talk about but even within the. Devices, they really did not go into the weeds. They're not talking about the processor that's inside the Pixel five they're talking more about like Pixel phones from a lifestyle perspective and kind of being happy with the photo performance, and the kind of little delights that you get with some of the software enhances stuff So they've but it was very light on those specific. Details. Pixel five of course was I would say the the more notable of the four devices only because it's the next Pixel. And everything that we already knew six ninety nine is the cost for that. Unit. There's not an xl size snapdragon seventy, sixty, five G. with five G. supporting subjects and millimeter wave a five G.. Aches Ram hundred twenty gigs of storage a six inch HD, plus Ola display with ninety hertz. Refresh rate to rear facing cameras the standard twelve point two megapixel. Camera which they've had in the last three or four pixels I. Mean it's it's basically the main sensor pixel phones as well as the the a series. Plus a sixteen megapixel ultra wide. So going from the telephoto last year to the ultra-wide this year forty, eighty, million, hour battery fifteen watt wireless charging also reverse wireless, charging rear, free a fingerprint sensor and an under display speaker which. I would say I'm a little concerned with because I, just I don't know sometimes the under displays speakers kind of approach as opposed to having like a little grill like I I don't know I wanna hear it to know but I think I saw like a video someone online had the pixel five already was kind of testing all these things indefinitely kind. Of. was saying that the speaker itself sounded Canada tinny. So I don't know if any of you saw any of those videos but no solely, which means no motion sense no face unlock here it's all fingerprint sensor going forward So starting with the hardware, are we like obviously it's what we expected because we knew all about it but Is Google offering enough with this next pixel flagship say to entice people brandon. What do you think? I, actually think that they priced it at least fifty dollars too much or if not one hundred dollars too much and I, think some of you might know about the whole mater millimeter wave thing with Reisen that might have a part in that but them kind of cutting out every single thing that is not absolutely necessary. is them obviously trying to get a lower? Price Point because it's working on their a-series devices. So they're trying to bring that at least on the higher end. Still I. Miss Things like the squeeze too for the assistant I miss face unlock, and if you remove solely, you lose the face unlock at least in terms of how Google's doing things. So there are some little magical things about a pixel device that I'm missing. Yeah I've come to actually really like the face unlock because it works so well on the floor Excel but I also like a rear facing fingerprint sensor which is. What a lot of other phones still have some of them have in display it is kind of also nice to have that direct kind of control over when I want to unlock my phone as opposed to the just happened to look at my phone and unlocked, and maybe I didn't want that. Maybe I wanted to look at the lock string content that sort of stuff. So. Let's see. Twenty two. What's that? Oh Twenty, all masks and everything. Good Point. That's a solid point the face, a lock on the Pixel. Four has been a little inconvenient. What I'm on about absolutely software. Wise. I feel like software wise is where we had at least some surprise. We didn't really know very much or at least I didn't know very much going into the event about extreme battery saver which they say promises up to forty eight hours. It's switches off a bunch of features on the phone I even more. So than it did before pases most APPs slows down the processor. It's just like if you need to stretch your battery this way do it and you can get two days out of it.

The Now-extinct Castoroides Was a Bear-sized Beaver

"Brain stuff Lauren Vogel. Bam here. mammoths, mastodons and Sabertooth hats weren't the only giants roaming ancient America. The Pleistocene was a global epoch kicked off two point six, million years ago. It lasted right up. Until Earth's most recent ice age ended about eleven thousand, seven, hundred years before the present day. When you live in a cold environment, being big has its advantages. Large animals tend to conserve body heat more easily than smaller ones. This is one of the major reasons why colossal mammals were so widespread during the frigid pleistocene. CASTA Roy was very much a product of its time. The largest rodent in Pleistocene north. America, this very big beaver grew to more than seven feet long from tail to stout that's over two meters and could have weighed as much as two hundred and twenty pounds or a hundred kilos or more. Rivaling the American black bear in size casta royalties utterly dwarfed the Beavers that lived today modern Eurasian, and American beaver species clock in just around three feet long a bit less than a meter and way somewhere between twenty nine, seventy, seven pounds. That's about thirteen to thirty five kilos. Proportionately castaways had a narrower tail and shorter legs albeit with bigger hind feet than its extant relatives. We also know that it didn't eat the same foods. What he plans are a crucial part of every living beavers diet. The critters use chisel like incisors that's their front teeth to gnaw through bark and take down trees. But. Even though castaways incisors grew to be a whopping six inches or fifteen centimeters long the teeth had dollar edges by comparison. Dental differences would have made it a lot harder for Castro to eat tree bark and indeed it looks like this was not really on their menu. Using isotopic signatures and castaways teeth from Ohio and the Yukon a twenty nineteen study found that the giant beaver mostly eight softer aquatic plants. The findings say a lot about the Rodin's ecological niche and why it might have died out. For starters, castaways probably didn't build dams. Unusual. About that the earliest known beavers appeared during the easing. A which lasted between about fifty, six, thirty, four, million years ago. New evidence suggests that the wood harvesting specialists came along much later perhaps around twenty million years ago. In all likelihood, these bark fanciers used would as a food source before any of them started constructing dams. Since as fed on aquatic plants, its survival would have depended on wetland habitats. The animal was highly successful for a time cast Roy these fossils representing at least two distinct species have been documented in the Great Plains the Great Lakes, the American South Alaska and numerous Canadian provinces. Unfortunately for the mega sized beaver north. America. became warmer and drier after the last ice age ended wetlands grew scarcer as a result. Today's beavers used their logging skills to reshape the land around them so that it meets their needs with some well placed would in the nearest stream, a determined beaver engineer brand-new Pons. Yet if Castro Reuters didn't harvest would or build dams, it couldn't followed suit. So theoretically decline in natural wetlands left the giant beaver more susceptible to extinction. Last of these creatures perished around ten thousand years ago.

Google Introduces Several New Products

"Hey It's Jefferson Graham Ula Santa Talking Tech I wanted to fill you in Google introduced a whole bunch of new products today. It's a little confusing what they did because they have two new phones. The cheaper one is the one with the better features the more expensive one not as great. You tell me what just happened the four hundred and ninety nine dollar Pixel for a which is the updated version of the phone that they put out in the summertime. It now connects to the five G. faster wireless networks. And again, five dollars versus seven hundred dollars for the more expensive version. Before has a larger six point two inch screen to the six inch screen on the five. It has a headphone Jack which the five does not have but the five does have a slightly more powerful battery but you tell me five hundred dollars or seven hundred dollars. Meanwhile, I would just get regular pixel for a which cells with three hundred. Fifty dollars five Jesus at least two years away before you're going to see it being really that much faster. Maybe a year I don't know. But what's out there right now is just barely faster than what we're seeing on our other phones. Now, the other big news chrome cast remember chrome cast came out a few years ago. It was a technology that let you plug this device into the back of your TV. And then cast. Media. From your phone or tablet on the TV. Pretty cool. Now, the new version comes with a remote control comes with Google assistant n a menu screen that Google is putting on your TV sets. That is called TV and it will help you navigate it. Find better stuff to watch via Google search will see can't wait to try it out finally remembered the Google home speaker, which was Google's answer to the Amazon Echo. Then they renamed nest this year there is the nest audio hundred dollar higher fidelity speaker competes with Amazon's Echo studio though the echo studios two, hundred dollars this one hundred I just got mine in the mail. And, I will be plugging it in I'll let you know how it sounds. But that is the quick update of what's new in Google land

I mean look we've continue to hold above ten thousand have done for a number of affiliate long duration of Tom now, and then we just console consolidating again. The? It's a talk Solo. Bash towing yesterday. We dig it to a high of. Ten thousand nine, hundred, sixty three. But then we sold off most that selling off came into the clothes and it was by saver. Better our you know we had a one hour candle, the closed down one and a half percent. which was you know? What was the that was down hundred sixty eight Dole's boarding bottoming out at about two hundred sixty. Very quick. Move. Damn and now we're starting to bounce back a little bit but the market doesn't little bit conscious. Doesn't look it doesn't look steady at was looking steady until at fulltime holding up around that tonight five but it could just be able to shop for a while until it works itself Atm Cost Ten or eleven thousand, two, hundred level that I'm really Kane on saying disappear. That is underneath frost I wanNA. See us go will above that and fly on high above and beyond above and beyond rotten now ten, thousand, six, hundred, twenty full. He's on the open all the next candle. Yesterday we call his down one point five percent last week's candle by the way will also looking quite positive. Yesterday with the theory of it goes down as well. One percent down close at three, fifty, three to three, fifty, four, fifty and I'm you know a guy that that real quick cell? Medically, it was really really awesome. Fortunately for theory of sorry unfortunately for me if they didn't end up giving that'll charity tried. It was looking good not to our and then it just went. Fell, quite quickly into the close like I said, three fifty, full you WanNa. Accept Player that well closing the day down really was down one percent in that quick sell-off as thing every closed down. They were all looking a roughly around Brookhaven with slightly off on the dykes pay twenty four point two cents not much to look at. When they come across to Bitcoin cash, it is one that still looks good. Not Four out of four has a wonderful little Cannell in that cradles on yesterday closing down. One point six, three percent. So we up half of a Senate turned twenty, six dollars and eighty. We'll be keeping a very close eye on that in the next few hours as little bullish candle light coin also looking still pretty average in our. It didn't do much loss wake. You didn't do much weight before. It's been a dead dog at the moment Dan one point nine percent yesterday closing forty five dollars and twenty three cents on a roughly about their nothing on the four hour of interest. In the crowd all not four out. Beautiful Pullback Day looks quite spooky. Indeed I do not mind look of that shot. We are one, sixty I spot nine, seven yesterday closing down the die one point, six percent gain just a small dead nothing major there but it's a bouncing back a little bit with the start of the new trading day. COD is at ten cents on the noise holding its ground little bullish channel sign a full. On the floor outshot having a very strong wake loss weight, cod. Donna. Last week bottomed out pretty zone out third saying Sammy's as I say only. It is quite a good move higher. My my point suppose is it a comeback from a third of the downside link having a very, very strong ron into the close loss weight right now. We are at ten cents like I said. By. A cat yesterday was up two point nine percent held. Its grand did move did put guys on. Rotten now I'm watching this on two hour as we have a village candle back in that cradles on good seclusive the on this child as well, and it could provide a little bullish candle to come left to white and see what we get. But it's twenty seven dollars in six inches of half a percent today obviously has said up trip when I present yesterday. Yesterday was also down has been pretty average trading for a long time. Now, down one percent yesterday counterpoint to will percent sitting at two dollars and fifty six cents nothing to try their and finally link ranting at that top ten. Big Push up last week particular died twenty nine percent but since then it hasn't done a great deal. just sort of hung around but at the higher end of that moves so it's it's looking good. As far as that goes consolidating at the moment standpoint, one of a percent at ten doubles and twenty seven cents I guess the positive there is today's above ten dollars. Go

Why a dedicated Zoom device makes sense

"You'll recall that earlier this week I had a lot of fun with that new Microsoft Eighty, five inch dedicated device for teams meetings. It's only twenty two thousand dollars little much for my budget I. Don't know about you but it's been a week for dedicated video meeting devices after that Microsoft announcement though I gotTa love, Amazon's answer which came later in the week, a dedicated ten inch unit for two hundred, fifty dollars the echo show ten, which lets you go through Alexa to connect to zoom skype or Alexa to Alexa direct calls two hundred and fifty dollars. Twenty two, thousand dollars I think I'll take the cheaper one Alex, thank you. I think these dedicated devices when they're priced, right make a lot of sense i. mean think of the kids were stuck at home taking school on their laptops. Now, they could have one more unit just displaying the teacher and lessons which would give their hands free for schoolwork and no taking on the laptop make sense for those of you who are taking meetings all day. The same issue applies isn't it hard to take notes when your laptop screen is filled with Speaker video windows. Plus this way you wouldn't have to worry Webcam placement after all his best to be at eye level which most people ignore and not have the Webcam looking up your Chin that requires putting the laptop atop of a bunch of books which gives you a better look, but it makes it really hard to type. So the savvy speaker or student would have to constantly move the books around that dedicated service on the desk would solve the issue living atop the. Books that could just stay there and not have to be moved around. So Amazon has the echo show ten, which will be out later this year it'll let you connect the Webcam to the TV via the hundred and twenty dollar fired TB Cube device. So so maybe it won't be watching eighty five inches how about fifty or sixty sounds pretty good p particularly when you consider that you can buy a good fifty inch these days for about three hundred dollars. Now, the Amazon solutions won't be available until later this year. But if you have a facebook portal video chat device, you can use the dedicated unit now to connect to zoom because the update started rolling out today. The portal started one, hundred, twenty, nine dollars, and they're available in three sizes at eight, inch, ten inch or fifteen point, six inch. The addition that connects the TV which is called. Portal. TV is not yet supported for the zoom calls meanwhile, that's not all folks next week on Wednesday Google holds its annual fall hardware product event where it's expected to unveil a new top of the line smartphone and updated streaming device and a new take on the nest home hub video display unit last year's nest. Didn't work with zoom or initially even with Google's meat though it does now but not zoom zooms coming later, and I know I can pretty much rest assured that the new Google video display unit we'll be working with zoom and hopefully working well

Interview with Khalil Zahar, Founder of FightCamp

"Guys that's Martin from shape. We're here right now in San Francisco Studio and unconnected to aid today on with the founder of fights cab Saha. Could you why don't you deduce yourself? It'll. Yeah. Awesome. First of all, thanks a lot for receiving me on the PODCAST. Martin. So my name is Lil- I'm the CO founder, CEO Camp and weekly started Fi Kim about a year and a half ago. So. If I is an interactive corn boxing gym, it comes with everything you need to start boxing and actually follow videos that are built by the best trainers of all the west coast they all fighters they all have obviously a tremendous fight expands but they're also great fitness instructor general for the listener on on our show that has never seen. It's what should be should be mentioned punching back and a pair of gloves. So what be? Yes. So it comes with a free standing bag. The best standing back on the market with a pair of didn't win leather gloves made an approved by fighters with a workout Matt, a pair of with be called quick grabs and the special sauce is who? Motion trackers that you put into quick wraps Ma and detract your hands a thousand times per second trek speed and my my punches. How many punches I'm doing per minute of what should I expect? Yes they tracked the type of country throw the measured the speed of the bunches basically build your output profile from one round to the other. What about impact? Not The impact is really the velocity. Okay. The of your hand and which actually throwing and how does like the coaching look like you were mentioning that you have coaches of all over the place and should I imagine like watching them like on my TV or iphone ourselves for me? Yes. So it comes with an APP you can the. Myriad on a large screen TV or you can watch the workouts on an IPAD whatever you prefer, and then from there, it's Kinda like all you can eat buffet. Really. So if you're advanced, you can jump straight into the advanced workouts right away we go and deep into the complex combinations. We'd practice footwork and the workouts very intense. Otherwise, it can literally start at the very first time. You've you're you're throwing your first punch. So we have what we call the prospect where it takes you from zero boxing experience teaches you to six inches and then at the end of the prospect path which. is about a four weeks program you actually know how to six months probably you know how to stand you know the basics Balkan it's mostly regular boxing the offer classes for a time boxing mma Nelson actually were focusing on boxing at the moment but we're having a lot of internal conversations around providing kickboxing as well as a kickboxing in multi, really as a as a an expansion and so so who's like you you're right now is it really like what you just mentioned on the beginners or is it like somebody that's been into boxing all their life or hundred, seventy, four for you Guys. Yeah, it's really seventy five percent beginners, but it's actually very interesting to see like a lot of them are now not beginners anymore So you know we kind of took a bunch of them. You know through the program you get to see videos online and on the social media and they're getting very proper form on have the basics of boxing. Of course, they don't have the in ring experience right visit steely it's a home virtual experience. Yeah. You can't really compete against somebody else right right. So Yeah, you actually can compete but on up put and precision you can't compete on. Actual defense offense. Of course, you're not going to get him. You know and does like a class look like, is it one on one coaching tailored to me or is it like a big class like pedal tone style or yet is really a group class? So it's you'll have usually the video stream will be divided into not that it's divided on the screen per se but vary between having the camera centered on the coach, and then you're getting bureau that is very dynamic. The camera moves around in the class and focuses on the participants taking the class live at our studio in Newport beach. For for me, you know like me having like an iphone like my supposed to put up my iphone like somewhere like on a on a counter, and then look at it while I'm like punching out on my back or how should I mention it? Yeah. That's a very good question like there's not a lot of people use it only with the with the iphone unless they're traveling aren't as they're actually using it in a gym gym or their apartment Jim the vending most people digging each day my cable upload, the Stream directly on on a big screen. TV. Your accent. Yeah. Oh we have a portion of our users. We actually are doing it on the night pat about Apple TV, that works as well Yeah. You can mirror exactly. You can use apple TV to mirror the the stream directly on a big screen TV as well. That's definitely the best experience you're getting very loud sounds and music. You hear the voice really really properly, the nose of the bag doesn't supplant the voice of the trainer lifts. Your stats are displayed very big for you. So like you're really into it, you feel like you're you're being tracked in. Really part of a group experience and it's both IOS and android os mostly s right now. Saying. It's only on ISLA, its and so why are people doing it Do they just WanNa, get a workout and they are not happy with you know like an experience like Peleton or maybe the half a pedal tone and want to supplement it with something else or do they actually want to get into boxing learn those skills forward let's say self defense. Yeah it's interesting. So. Like calm, we have two types of customers. The first type of customers really just will always intrigued boxing They want to do it because it's a work of that Jesse get something out of it even though you would stop working out after a year like you would still acquire the skills and those are self defense skills. You know a lot of people are mystified by you know. How to actually throw a punch and Hudson do properly. So that was one of our customers the other portion of because there is actually coming from the idea that boxing is the best workout to get in shape and the discovered the fundamentals and techniques through fight Cam. So the first reason they joined is for fitness purposes really assuming that boxing is the best workout out there the. Other portion come straight because they want boxing, but they can't attend to have a busy lifestyle. Their young parents hitting the gym is increasingly harder would a busy schedule? so that's the other proposition that they really resonate with and

Can I Prune an Overgrown Rhododendron Now or in the Spring?

"Jason said in question. He says I have an out-of-control Rhododendron. It's about twelve feet high and it's moving out over the sidewalk. I'd like to cut it back is now or spring better time and I'd like to cut it back to three or four feet tall week. Okay. I don't know how to handle this. Sorry did he hasn't been keeping up with it Over time. However, that being said I'm going to start with a truck accident and that is a mail truck that was parked. It was evacuated package were taking the building the truck brake apparently hadn't been set. It turned up over the curb went in and broke off about twelve foot tall rhododendrons ripe add bumper height. So let's just say it thirty inches I have an old Lord. That's the end of those while I went by two years later. They had been left in they had to had all the dead removed and so on and they had grown back another six inches. I suppose nine inches each year. I was dumbfounded. I thought it would kill them. However didn't so where what is being suggested is a really delicate in terms of balance of what will and won't make it I'd say go ahead now, I would definitely under these circumstances cut it off in the early spring. I don't even know what date to put on it, but around April 1st some time prior to the plant. Well it just even back into March sometime prior to that plant wasting any energy putting out New Growth new leaves flowing etcetera. I would prone it Bend so that it can log So to speak just to the loss. It will not have expended energy from the root and Crown area up into the plant. It won't have used up enough. But what there should be plenty of energy left to start to excite the buds in the by that means get them to Growing that are on the lower parts of the plant. Now, this is risky. However, as I say the truck off on its own it took out three plants and I was dumbfounded that came along quite so nicely. So if well, first of all, I would do it in Spring only 1/8, I would do it before you even lose the flowers just so you don't cause that energy deficit any greater than it will be then I would definitely dress the surface around those months starting twelve inches out or at a plant thirteen twelve inches out from the trunk. I would put some acid fertilizer on the ground throughout the whole area. That would have been the drip line of the place. It's a 12-footer could be 4 or 4 and 1/2 even five feet across.

But trying to rationalize what happened might be quite a difficult task I think. Is a bit light last year's final when ref on the Dow lead two sets to love and a break. And that looked over and then suddenly it was in a fifth set is it bit lineup? No. I didn't think. It was follow quality I would say. I thought I thought. was really good like the whole time. This one was patchy. But the idea of it being not that interesting because looking like going to be a straight sets win. And then suddenly you don't want the match to end and you wanted to go on forever in that sense, it was similar. But I don't think quality-wise or. Sort of the reasons for why ended up being such a dramatic match were that similar tall I also think that Medvedev's comeback last year was completely unexpected I think again somebody like. Nidal or not somebody like against Nidal, if love down in your first Grand Slam final. Very few people are predicting away back I think even at sets breakdown today. People will. I think most people watching. Were waiting dominate team to wake up and. Waiting for something that felt like, surely, it has to happen surely at some stage today even if it's only. A small research and see and I am a break back pushing the set to a tiebreak. Winning a set. People were waiting to see the real. Dominic team. It felt. It felt like only a matter of time whether he could get it together. In time. Before it was either. But for me, that was quite crucial difference in how this one felt. Lost felt I will remember this match I think in the long run for the final set and for the final set tiebreak but. You can't have that without the other stuff that comes before just two guys. So, let's talk about that talk about the start of the match. And how we it was. It was weird. It was I mean festival Amazon deserve. Totally, different men to the guy who came out against public arena buster looked. Just, totally paralyzed with nerves and unable to play his normal game. He looked free now there for those first two sets, he looked languid he has. He has a languid power. Unlike, anybody else I think when you he said of generates speed of shot whether it's the serve of one hundred and seventy seven miles now or four hundred. That's kind of hit the back fence without you realizing he's actually hit it that hard. I don't think anybody else gives me that. kind of feeling out on the circuit of the moment you can. I can feel the power of everybody else is almost a slight of hand the way he does it, but he was timing the ball way way better and also the intent was there and he was coming into the net I mean the statistics on his net approaches. I think after a sense set in half to gone to the net twenty times. And with some success, he looks uncomfortable at the net, but he was just playing. The odd. So masters using his six foot six inches his wingspan. Great. Get into the net. And Dominic team was absolutely awful.

California Wildfire Takes The Home Of A Veteran Firefighter

"Devastation in California from deadly wildfires is historic so far this year thousands of wildfires have devoured more than a million and a half acres an area more than three times larger than Los Angeles where I am the Lmu lightning complex fire is now the second largest in the state's history and the flames did not spare Andy Stan Dana's home. He's a twenty three year veteran with the South San Francisco Fire Department. He spent decades saving other people's homes A-. Lost everything as he put it less Wednesday, his farm, his home, many of his animals but he and his wife are safe and he and his wife Sarah Hawkins join me on the line from winters California about an hour northeast of San Francisco. Thank you both for taking some time for us. I can't imagine what you've been through. Thank you for having us. Anti I WANNA start with you, I mean as I said, you've been a firefighter for twenty three years your own property now, hard hit by this fire just talk to me about this fire if you've ever battled anything like. I have not in not many people can say that they've battled in fires or been in fires or experience fires. Of such size and magnitude and at the speed that this move. Seemed unprecedented will yeah I mean talked to any Andy you at home asleep and off-duty when when it came your property and can you take me to the moment when you realize that it was this out of control? We actually received multiple phone calls back to back from our neighbor than they lost everything also, but they called US woke up and said Hey. We've been giving notification from their son who is a local firefighter that it's bad. Up I went outside and did a quick assessment of what I could see and I could see The Ridge linked to behind us. All aglow and we're talking miles and miles of miles from my right to my left as I looked out the back door I hurried in and woke up Sarah. We quickly got dressed through a few things in bags. Made sure we had identification with us in a little bit of money in made sure the cars were pointed out I then went out to kind of assess what was going on based on my training and years of service saying what am I seeing and I've never seen a fire front of that size coming towards off sweep had fires back there in the past than it seemed like everything changed the winds picked up it turned ninety degrees on US instead of coming out of the West that came out of the north. and. The Sarah had joined me to kind of just see what was going on and by that time we turned around and realize there is a flaming front coming behind us. From our north and it was going to flank our exit we ran for the cars and we got out of there with flames. Close enough that I had to get in on the passenger side of the truck instead of the driver's side because it was too much fire on that side of the car to get in and we. Got Out it just came so quick. Well. I'm so. Relieved that you tour safe? Sarah what. was going through your mind I mean, did you feel like you were going to get out of there somehow? Lows pure adrenaline when we had gone out to assess where the flames were coming from where the fire was coming and all of a sudden just hear this roar from the North was kind of shocking that it was coming so fast and the flames were as high as they were they should not have been that high. And it was like we gotta go and I ran in the house and grabbed the dog and just I had to literally throw her into the car because she was so panicked at the flames and just. Get Out. Have you been able to assess what you've lost in what condition the properties in. We've lost everything. But our barn Oliver farming equipment, our greenhouse, the house, the house is just. A six inch layer of crumbled drywall and shattered tile. And We lost all of our Jeanne you're. does that we were retaining the GO-TO you're talking about him in Europe prize? Breeders? Should say. What are those goats mean to you? Have worked really hard on my breeding program and every year we have babies and I bottle feed all of them so that they'll be friendly and I know all of them I know all their names I delivered all of them there. It's It's not just a place obviously Sarah this is your livelihood and your business already we were in a in a pandemic in a faltering economy I mean how have you even begun to think about how you move forward and what's next now? Just, barely spend an hour or two just looking through. Shirts at a donation place and like shoes and supplies. We don't. You know we have a couple of t shirts and we have a couple of pairs of shorts. There's so much to do. Just regarding the house burning down. and. Trying to figure out next steps because there's not really much of a handbook on. When you're houses burned down where the two of you know I take it you're safe now. Yeah. We're currently staying with a friend best friends people ask if we're safe and we're like, we are safe. Now you know we do have a place to stay for now, but we can't stay here for six months. India are you go back into to? Fight these fires again soon or are you going to get some time away to deal with? What's how might department? My Department was Gracious. Enough to. Extend, as much time as I needed I I was able to take vacation for the immediate tour after it happened. But? Yes. I will be going back to work. Soon enough and will be there for the public as a protector in. Twenty years in the fire department another eight years before that on ambulances. So I've been serving the public for over thirty one years and continuing until. Retirement sometime in the near future. Andy. And Sarah Hawkins I'm I'm just glad you two are together and safe and You know we'll be thinking about you. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Looking for a MacBook Air alternative? Here are your best options

"With kids about to head back to school either in person or Colle- laptops. Are. Front. And Center. Now Michalak. Air is a popular option. There's actually a pretty wide world outside of Mackerel S I'm Roger Chang and this is your charge. With me laptop expert and senior reviewer Josh Goldman. Thanks for joining me. Josh. Thanks for having me, Roger. So we're getting close to back to school season and who knows what? That's really gonNA look like you know we've got folks potentially going my kid's GonNa. Go to school with a bunch of people doing remote learning But with that said, parents will generally WANNA decent laptop for their kids no matter what their ages at this point Just start things off do you have a general tips for people on the hunt for Nick Peter? The, the one thing having you know, ended the the last school. In Quarantine the one thing I did learn from that was if you can afford to get it laptop with a larger screen than the eleven point six inch screen that most of the kids have on their chromebooks. chromebook obviously, he became really popular with schools. Except they went with models that have eleven point six inch screens which are very difficult for navigating the world of online learning. A lot of the online learning tools require more screen space so that the kids can actually see what they're doing and I think if you're going to invest in a laptop for your kid this season, get them something with at least a thirteen inch display fourteen if possible or even larger if he can. So what about touchscreen is that something that's necessary or is that more of a luxury I don't know that it's a luxury some or necessary I think it's just something that you can get these days as far as I'm concerned. touchscreens of the future everybody uses their phone all day long that's a touch screen tablets touchscreens. It makes sense for kids to have a touchscreen because that's how they're used to communicating with computers these days so. If you can get one with a touchscreen. Great. I don't think it's going to be a detriment though if you don't get one with a touchscreen and since we're talking about MAC books anyway or air replacement. macbook airs don't have touchscreens anyway. So if you're GONNA go macbook air, then you're not getting a touchscreen anyway. But one of the luxuries of gone with windows is you can get them with touchscreen. So catching and the MAC book air has been a popular option for a long time for students particularly college students But generally, what are some of the big reasons why you'd want to consider alternative is far as an alternative? if want to go with the chromebook, it's because that's what your school district is on. That has that makes things a lot easier than. Going with a separate operating system like windows or Mac os but the bigger thing for a lot of people going back to school is whether or not there their software that they need to get through school is going to work with the operating system that they have other than that it's more or less just learning to deal with the different features in the different houses. So it's not. I wouldn't say that like the OS is a big issue, but it's certainly an issue and you WanNa, just make sure what you're using his compatible with the operating system that you're going. Guys let's start with windows the the most popular operating system out there. What are some of the best options for a windows laptop. So if we're going to stick with the like as a macbook air replacement the macbook air has over the years been the most popular option for kids in school and or in college in high school students but they're. Obviously the the windows PC makers figure that out pretty quick and made a lot of laptops that look and behave in everything that MAC book air. So you've got things like. If you WANNA go really premium. Got Things like the daleks ps thirteen or the HP Specter which have a lot of the same design touches and it's just a super premium long battery life good performance and around thousand dollars. which is what you're dealing with with the macbook air. You're still at around that thousand dollar price point for their starting configuration. You can as usual get a better deal with with windows than you can with Mac. He'll usually get more features better processor, those kind of things with you go with windows. If you want to go. So those two that I mentioned her thirteen inch. If you want to go a little bit larger, my personal recommendation for most people is the Lenovo. Yoga. See Seven, forty, it's a two and one. So it's a little bit more flexible. It's a fourteen inch little bit larger screen, but still a nice compact package really good battery life really good performance and you can get it for less than a thousand dollars yen full disclosure I took joshes advice in actually purchased one. My wife and I are very happy with it so. On Josh thank you, it is it. It's one of those laptops that looks and feels like a Mac Book Air Bit and a you just getting you're getting more for your money with it. If, you want to go even less expensive on windows I like the acer swift three, which is running amd's latest rising processors and those the the processing performance you're getting out of that is like twice that of more more expensive laptop. So it's it's or should I say the processing performance is that of a laptop that's twice as expensive. Because as the swift three starts at around six hundred dollars and it's a three pound laptop fourteen inch display really really nice. Good. Battery Life But yeah, it's it's really cheap with good performance.

Dual-screen Surface Duo marks Microsoft's return to smartphones

"The other exciting future is foldable Microsoft's screen android device. The surface duo is available for preorder now for one. Hundred Ninety nine dollars, ask. Arriving September tenth. Being being excited about this product, the surface duo has to eighteen hundred, thirteen, fifty, five, point, six, inch, sixty, hertz led screens. Now when you unfolded those screens connect to form an eight point, one inch workspace, but it's not a single screen like with the Samsung Galaxy full because there's still the hinge in the middle and Microsoft's like we're not trying to be that. We're not trying to to have a foldable screen. We're just trying to make a bigger workspace displays are both gorilla glass as a result because they don't have to bend and they work as side-by-side Ma monitors essentially, it's four point eight millimeters thick another big. That's when it's open. Of course, it folds up it's nine point nine millimeters even then it's not too bad. Also the whitest ever android phone. As. Ours Technica pointed out ninety three millimeters wide that is bigger than even the biggest galaxy note that ever existed. It uses one eleven megapixel camera that can record four K. video at up to sixty frames per second runs on a snapdragon eight, fifty, five last generation processor, not eight, sixty five. Six Gigs of Ram. One hundred twenty eight or two, hundred, fifty, six gigs of storage has lt e not five g. but maybe don't. And two batteries one under each screen that combined for three thousand, five, hundred, seventy, seven Nila amp hours. So the specs aren't. Notch they're they're okay but they're not top notch also fingerprint reader sport for surface pen. All ANDROID APPS can run on it. And there are surface. Made. APPS AN API out. For developers to make more of them, that take advantage of the dual display and could like put the keyboard and one side or no taking on one side. And Get. Use Out of that form factor. But as I mentioned, it's a thousand, three, hundred, ninety, nine dollars, and while that's not as expensive as the Samsung Galaxy fold it ain't cheap. Yeah. It feels like a test. To me because at that price and at these specs, you're gonNA find out real quick who your buyers are and. And will extend past the people who just have to have the coolest gadget where a total android heads and have to have every model ever made or love Microsoft stuff or whatever does it extend much past that the two most exciting products I've ever seen out of Microsoft is honestly this I think is really cool. But the specter too low, and there's not a great argument for use case for me

"So I left confident on Friday morning went out to the beach that the snow would start at about three or four o'clock on Saturday. I'd be back long before that. And it was not going to be a big deal. When I got back the forecast. Had changed to four to six inches in the metro area four to six inches in the metro area. And that would have been okay total. But at my house yesterday at my house yesterday. I shoveled Ron came over and shoveled at about five to six inches at about ten o'clock in the morning yesterday and in the afternoon, and then there was a period of time with with light snow falling. No big deal in the afternoon. Twelve in three lights in the afternoons. When games were going on. I'm just going to tell you that. I think I got twelve inches of snow in my house. I really do and everything that was shoveled yesterday was worthless by last night and certainly worthless by this morning, and it was a big enough snow that it confounds the dog the dog can't find any place to make because the dog can't sniff. The dog has to stick its nose all the way down in the snow and still doesn't get any sense that it can really use. I believe that they were hopelessly hopelessly inadequate in their predictions. I believe that they had it wrong. All the way up to the end. They just continued to have it wrong and wrong and wrong. And I hope Melissa malay-. I hope she's happy. I hope she's happy doing snow angels. Yeah. I hope she got into work today with with whatever car they had to send for and as of yesterday at yesterday at noon or two or three the main roads were fine. And Michael, you think you think? I'm wrong in being this critical. I think you're correct in being critical. But you're misplacing the timeline. You should not be mentioning any forecast from Thursday or Friday at this point because it did shift a little bit later. I think you need to be a little heavier in your criticism of yesterday's forecast. After three pm we make the decision to come over to your house because they say there's one to two inches of snow remaining in the system at that point. We'd already had five to six we'd already taken care of the drive of the sidewalk will get into sidewalk etiquette after this. But there is another four to five inches after three P. I had to go back out, and there's still accumulating snow until nine when you're trying to. When you're trying to make travel plans even locally that to me is where the big misses. I don't think you can really hold much weight with what they're saying on Thursday because that does continue to change. And I do think you need to recognize capital weather gang still does it very good job. All the all the TV radio people. They just missed yesterday afternoon. There were there were there were two distinct events where I live. There was a five to six inch snowfall Saturday night into Sunday, which they essentially nailed I thought yes, they said one inch between seven p in about eleven to midnight. And then there was an there was about four hours of nothing. Clear roads, it was fine. And there wasn't a nother five where I live. I had eleven inches another five to six inches. Yes. They have that. Which was completely uncalled for as as recently as Sunday morning. They were saying a winter storm watch in effect through one or maybe it was four o'clock on Sunday. Then as the day went on that became six, and then it became eight and then at eight they were saying it was going to snow until midnight, which it extensively where I.

Yeah. They're talking about the superheroes. They don't. They don't kill their enemies. They don't kill the bad guys there. I don't know why this is being there. Some people have actually expressed concern about this, which is insane to me. They of course, they're like third wave feminists that are saying, well, spider-man's committing murder and all my goodness. And so now insomniac which is a developer of a game involving Spiderman they confirmed that he never kills anyone in the game. He's a protector and for the guys that get thrown off the building. "In saving commercials is already after they pretend to show them shaving but then they just focus on their shiny because they deemed hair body hair to be unattractive so this is the first razor company that's actually showing real hair on women i'm fine without it i am fine with the after i don't know if i need to see the shaving i don't really care either way to raise their way you i'm watching it now and i'm totally fine i don't care if there's hair or not here in the commercials the only thing i have a problem with is the close up of the razor with the heron it afterwards that you would i'm fine fine with the harry just don't want to see the wet hair in the race i don't the words i don't mind harry legs like if you're if someone's shaving harry i don't care about that but the armpits can't handle i think there should be an episode of the bachelorette where the bachelor shaves her legs there was one the season where they is fine he they painted her toes they didn't do any leg saving i don't think i would want a guy to shave my leg i don't trust them to be careful enough to not so yeah i agree with that i haven't tried it but legs are not straight they've got curves to them and now i've got too many razor nightmares i don't want to become no thanks i tried to teach lewis poaching egg last night it was disaster there's no way i'm gonna let him shave really anybody ever shave your legs no i like to do it myself asking unless you wanna you wanna take a wack at it we can would actually take a literal whack at it say goodbye to give me a break please come on weather and travel information lot of heavy rain a lot of flooding all the way from houston up into the ohio river valley this week is hot humid and wet and so there are people were thinking okay where's the hurricane season because it is time we had one earlier i think on wednesday almost six inches of rain at hobby airport and so that closed the airport down for a while and there's a there's a when you go into places like houston because of the hurricanes there's a fear the it's almost calculated into the residents there because they were so affected by these hurricanes and so now they hear the story about these big storms coming in but if you live close especially in that area the gulf coast you live close to the water you might as well count on getting washed away with regularity that's just the way it is and the insurance companies more and more saying the federal government also saying we're not gonna keep replacing these homes and it may not even be in a hurricane it could be we had here where i am last thursday we had three and a half inches of rain in four and a half hours it just poured and i ruined twenty grade bales of round hey that's me fifteen hundred bucks because we couldn't get into the field and get out fast enough and that's what happens that the people measure it by what's going on on the farm but in terms of traveling who'd go to houston on vacation anybody here want to go to houston and i'm not saying i'm not taking a shot at texas but why would you go to houston for vacation it's hot as you go to any major city though yeah that's a point i i live in new york city i wonder all the time like why are people here in different i'll tell you a great city frame vacation go to visit or take a vacation but when i go visit i found when i was travelling and visiting stations that it was on all around the country seattle is favorite stops as somebody seattle that is just fascinated great city boston those are the best north west you get up into vancouver as well victoria british columbia absolutely magnificent areas to go but if you're somewhere else in texas and you want to go to a city why wouldn't you go to dallas or houston i don't have an answer to that i don't even know couldn't even go to houston i'm sure there's plenty of reasons why people would with other than the bush library the presidential library i don't.

"I was fortunate at the store i purchased it online i i went online got there it was the only one left and people were yelling kind of like what's going on do you at eight this morning where they all go and hadn't ordered online paid for it would have been out of luck a lot of folks say it's not hot enough yet to get the air conditioner or not yet not yet and then you get to a situation like this and then you have to put it in during the heat it's gotta be a bummer because you have to keep the window open for a while you gotta you gotta go get it you gotta like an upstairs is this you folks is as you can unlock it upstairs you can take out of the box if it works generally i i haven't all done by springtime ali air conditioner filters clean you we wanna clean you filter can make a distinct difference i being a person who has has asleep in the day i want it dark cool so i've i've taken extraordinary measures to keep my place doc and cool one thing you can do and i did and i found it to be excellent is there's a type of film you can put over on the window which keeps a certain percentage of sunlight out it's kind of like sunglasses for your windows still seattle fine if you're totally forget it's there it's it's works great that takes some of the light and the heat out then you get sunblock shades white change the clock son also keep the heat at bay big help and what else oh yeah just make sure your air echinacea's position so that it's an window they'll do the maximum good fans help get air moving around very helpful fans as some folks in my family who are old and they need air conditioning and fans you need to watch out for people keep an eye on him keep him hydrated because they could they could get really dehydrated and have kidney failure i could pass out keep an eye on them and the thing they say about checking on your neighbor is true really do it and then have a plan for if they need something be prepared to do it it's a it's a least you can do it's kind of your duty if you have a mother or something go take care of her it's your duty and here's this too i saw i saw a woman walking white dog with big long hair the hamlets have been six inches long was kind of like a kind of like a miniature husky white i don't know what you call them and she's walking outside in the sun with his dog and i just think it's i think that's kind of animal abuse yeah i get it the the animals hairs beautiful but i think they ought to get a haircut for this heat it's not healthy for them to be in this heat with long hair like that i think probably the smaller the dog the more fragile they are and you ought to be careful make sure that you gotta make sure they have water and they stay stay in an air conditioned place this is you get two or three days into a heat wave like this to get serious i don't know if you're able to get out if you're out right now fans go for a walk and you walk by brick building put your hand in that building right now is it was still feel like the bricks from a fireplace after the fire i was pretty blown away i walked a little bit to work just a little bit to get to the bus and i put my hand on a building that had recently been in the sun and was shocked at how hot it was also cooking in the kitchen not good another hint led lights runway cooler than regular lights a lightbulb especially one hundred one up a lot of heat and it's counterproductive you can get real cheap led lamps to run at times like this that we'll keep you cooler what else that'll do it keeps them kind of lights down and if you still feel hot it's going to be way hotter if you standing up then if you sit down and if if you really want to be cooler sit on the floor now for people in big houses this stuff's not not as important because you can open windows and.

"Your weekend take care good night ankles sandy and here comes valerie valerie i won't sing the song oh okay thank you i'm sure i'm sure you know no no valerie oh another son named valerie sharon who's turning around my door but she sure looks different now the way she looked before they call her van it goes on i don't think it's a song by the monkees google it i'm sure you hear it okay thank you you're welcome my question is by husband has a ls and we're going to remodel our kitchen and our bathroom and i was just trying to find out about some kitchen innovations where the cabinets the interior of the cabinets can come down so that he can reach them he can't raise his arms and i had heard about these new types of cabinets where the interior of the show come down yes there are you know who you need to speak with is someone who specializes in universal design which is design for people of all abilities usually if you you know if you talked to someone at the the cabinetry store there are kitchen and bathroom designers that's civically have certification in universal design and can help you because you're going to want the cabinets that pull down i know exactly what you're talking about you grab a handle and they pulled down so that he'll be able to reach it you also can get cabinetry that you can roll underneath as well in wanna make sure that they're you know know thresholds that are going to the problem with threshold right thresholds are tough in the getting the walkers over threshold rate the the doorways need to be opened up to thirty six inches is inches thirty inches of rain right and thirty inches is going to be really really tight so thirty six inches should provide enough clearance and then in the bathroom of course you're going to need a lot of handrails so we have those we just perfect perfect we were told that we should change the way out of the bathroom so that the toilet is the first thing because that's what you use the most and then the shower we're getting rid of the tub and then the showers should be at the end that makes absolute sense and then you can also get rid of the threshold in the shower and install a linear drain so the so you can roll right into the shower area and then the the water goes along the side of the shower in the back and the the floor gets sloped up little bit so that the water slides down into it it's called the linear drain linear drain okay and that universal design is that a site or no that's a special certification that some kitchen and bathroom designers have they i would maybe look on well if you did a google search for room for universal design in your area i think that would probably be your best bet okay all right well thank you very much it's definitely a specialty so there are lots of little little tricks that that can be an and specific fixtures that can be installed to make life a whole lot easier that would be good that would be helpful you look up that song valerie by the monkees okay no less monkeys they were awesome was it was a dvd song love davey davey gone tonight valerie tonight thank you all right you were monkeys fan i did i loved that show and what about the music which was often written by neil diamond so what's not often not often sometimes well being boyce and hart a number of people wrote saw my favorite monkey song was written by carole king which one take a giant step oh i i album though you've played it i'm not gonna sing i'll just recited so you've played it love and loss and sorrow has turned your heart.

"Help you there your lawn your garden we talked to we talked a lot about grilling matter of fact tomorrow morning on channel third there's a throwdown there is a little yeah we're having we're having honey cashew now you've got food on your shoes down between the charcoal grill offers and the gas drillers any fistfights not at all tomorrow morning it's going to be mainly grill safety now here's some kind of interesting i was watching the today show on nbc this morning and they were doing some of the same information about one the number one things if you don't hear anything else never light a gas grill with the hood down you always have the lid up no kin always really obviously because proteins a heavier than air gas and it pulls down there all right they so what they did is they set up a couple of tests where they they started a grill and then ignited it with the grill and it just blows out the doors and really really can cause some cereal they did this as a demonstration yes yes you did that on chided i know i was watching that kind of budget our budget for our channel thirteen segments are just five dollars and forty cents that's just on the today show but here's the interesting thing that when they were doing this they had that grill and denny i am not lying six inches away from the house people you should never have real if you're if you're lighting a grill you should try to have every bit of thirty six inches she we have to share and now you have to show id to bioweapon shouldn't they have to show id to buy grass grill or at least i don't know what state i don't know that's how they're doing this demonstration mean the fire department was there conducting it but i'm taking you know good safety tip there is making sure your grill is sufficient away from sufficient distance from the house like to us thirty six inches yeah it's fine to store it there but when you're using it just pull it out a little bit you know anything that we always say how far should your conditioner be from the house we would say thirty six inches that's funny think about things that should not be next to the house your condition you gotta get airflow otherwise in speaking of which now remember your your air conditioners right now are absolutely maxed out there running flat out like lizard drinking they can't get any more btu cooling into so what can a homeowner due to just hedge their bet wasn't call thing all right so i would shut the curtains that's number one keep the solar out the other thing is you can go out with your garden hose and you can actually cool down your outside coil with just a little missed of a spray shoot from the inside you may still have cottonwoods stuck if you haven't been out and looked but giving but it's an it's an air cooling system on the outside and since it's ninety eight degrees right and what about filters how often filters handy i know it depends on the media i would see at least quarterly if you've got two inch media you might be go every four months and if you have the great big four inches or six inch you know the air bears or the the big media you could probably go six months i will tell you though if you're using those one inch electrostatic charge three m filters those things are so officiant they suck in so much turt which is great but if you forget to change it you're going to have problems so check the filter i remember two three nine ninety three ninety three coming right back with more from indie metro airport its wings over indy goes today till five o'clock some morrow nine to five ninetythree wibc.

"In your ductwork in the addict okay when you say adequate blown in insulation at the ceiling how thick is it at least six inches if not more okay so here's the vanishes of creating a properly installed unventilated semi condition attic roof line or attic space with a open cell spray urethane foam is that your air conditioning equipment and your duckworth are no longer in that extremely hot humid harsh addict conditions that it currently is in right now because your attic is ventilated in the insulation thermal boundaries at the ceiling line so as chestnut you're doing is you're you're raising a thermal boundary from the ceiling up to the underside of the roof line is the it should be installed continuous and uninterrupted in she'd be a complete air barrier and a thermal barrier so your attic is going to be cooler and drier gonna currently is now there's some complexities to that when you're dealing with existing house and you converting it or what we call a retrofit you have to remove the existing ceiling insulation that's there and francis by the way six inches of blown not enough it needs to be at least eleven or twelve inches thick in order for in our climate the other you need to do besides removing the ceiling salaciousness you need to make sure your kitchen your bathroom exhaust fans are vented ducted endangered all the way out not ninety but outside the roof lawn or the porch sailing on asaf it's if you have any gas appliances like gas water heater gas furnace that raises some complexities because now you're taking that gas furnace that was used to be invented attic and you're now putting it in a closed addict so there's so combustion air challenges that need to be over called and then finally the other last part on what you consider when making this choice is you're already replacing your windows and now you could be potentially taken away the heat and the moisture in your attic where you're conditioners and your echinacea could be sized to large scooby.
