We'll have to excuse Patrick Edwards today. He is traveling on the road and I am home between hunts for a momentary break in time. I actually was out trying to fill an elk tag this morning and was rather unsuccessful at filling a tag but had a great morning anyways. Fall is in the air guys. It's definitely time to get your gear, get out of the woods, and go enjoy it whether you're fishing, hunting, hiking, or backpacking. I've asked a former guest and another guest to come join us today. I've got Mr. Mike Kentner with me. Hello Mike. Hello. Glad to be here. Yeah, we were out looking for a few elk this morning and hiking around and I twisted his arm and said let's talk about what's in Mike's backpack. As you guys know I like to go hunting and over the years gear has changed dramatically from when I first started in the mid 90s and certainly from when you first started, right? Absolutely. In the early days we carried a fanny pack, nobody carried a backpack. Nobody had the idea Everly stock came out with I think to coin the phrase go in light come out heavy to be able to pack out when you went in. The early days we never did that. It's all kind of a newer concept in my world anyway. And I started in the scouting industry doing 50 milers and that kind of stuff so I had a pretty good grasp on what you should and what weight should be on how to navigate through the mountains. I had some orienteering, some compass, some basic survival under my belt, some first aid and some safety. But you have to put all that together and then you've got to start putting your backpack together and there is so many options now compared to when I first bought a $10 book bag from Walmart and put a few things in it and went hiking around saying man this and when we harvested stuff for the most part I threw a quarter on my shoulder and went hiking down the trail or I went and got horses or a dirt bike or a quad or a four wheeler but for the most part western style stuff it was I remember getting one of the very first real hunting backpacks I got was a fanny pack style. Yeah that's what we all started with back then we carried just the basic essentials maybe something to light a fire with, stuff to take care of your game if you put something down and then if you shot anything you walked all the way back to camp empty changed out for a metal frame and went back in for your meat. Yes and those metal frames have pretty much gone the wayside. A few guys still have them there's some companies making some really cool ones now and what you mean by metal is an external just a frame pack no bag attached nothing. It had a load shelf on it you set the shelf on tight most time they didn't have straps you had to use paracord or some kind of cord to tie your meat onto the pack. Now backpacks have obviously evolved the idea of backpack hunting has evolved and we're discussing a little bit today you know when I'm going on an expedition style Everest climb style hunt I'm taking a completely different kit than I am day hunting elk from the truck. Right everything down to I may use the same frame the same base frame but my bag load will be different I use a very small bag for my day hunts like today I use a 2800 inch bag for my day hunts and you go over a 6000 for a long hunt if you're going in for five or six days or more. Now day hunting what is your backpack in a way versus when the difference between a four day hunt and a ten day hunt you only have food difference you've got the same spotting scope the same shelter the same clothes for this kind of discussion a little bit we're basically going to talk day hunt or multi day now if you're talking four day or ten day that the only difference there is you're adding six extra days of food realistically same if I'm only going two nights then I might do something different but if I'm going for four to five nights I'm doing the same thing I would be doing if I'm doing ten to twelve nights. Yeah as far as your overnight gear still is pretty much the same. So that leads me to this first question is and I used to the first year or two elk hunting here in Wyoming I took my 7000 cubic inch bag just compressed it all the way down ran it empty and hunted with that but it stuck up so much higher than my head every time I duck under something I'm getting hung up so I switched to a 1850 Icon Pro from QU years ago I'm now running the Stryker XL from Kefaru that's my day bag and it's inch and then I throw a Sherman pocket and a guide lid and a claymore so now I'm like 3000 cubic inch but I don't have that completely full and we discuss this how full do you run your 2800 in day hunt mode? My day in day hunt mode is less than half full of what I pack and then I have plenty of room for jackets clothing depending on the weather any of that kind of stuff I'm gonna have in it but my base bag with my everything to take care of game and everything is less than halfway full. So some of the things that are in mind that I can think of is I always have a small first aid kit right nicks cuts scrapes burns some aspirin and then I have a kill kit usually involves I actually really like to use rubber gloves I grew up not doing it but when you're doing multi day multi hunt multi tags it's really nice to have a pair of rubber gloves to keep a little bit cleaner while you're processing but you definitely need those game bags I run six game bags how many do you run? Usually five I keep five in there for elk and big stuff it's always five and the reason guys I'm why running more than four quarter bags is well you've got neck meat back straps tenderloins I like to keep those two separate and what I've found is when we're doing either llamas or horses it's really easy even if we're backpacking and we've got to hang the meat away from bears I like to have all four of those quarters in their own bag and then I need two more for the rest of the stuff and sometimes I even like to grab another bag to put capes in. Yeah it's nice to have one for your cape if you're in the backcountry and you think you're going to have an animal mounted it's nice to have a cape a bag for your cape go as well so I usually carry like when I shot my bull this year I had six bags in me with me at the time so I have my five I primarily put meat in and then I have one backup one for the cape to bag it in so you need a good quality bags and quite a few of them. I don't typically pack water filtration in day hunt mode sometimes I like to run an algae and a bladder bag and I just fill that up in the morning and typically that's four liters of water I can pretty much make it through a day on that much water yeah I'm starting out a little heavier but I don't have to stop and pump during the day so do you what do you do for water in typical day hunt mode? I run bladder bags two liter bladder bags and so I usually run either one and a half or one liter and a two liter or two two liter bags so I'm running three to four liters and but I do carry the small Sawyer water filtration pretty much everywhere weighs under four ounces does about a pint at a time you got to refill the bag but it is a good way to get some extra water if you need it.

So I think at some point I want to turn this around actually on the audience and hear what you guys have to say about this topic. I got, I actually have 6 dreams I'm going to talk about. Or which is maybe it's better to put it like you said. The first three are about other people, the last three are about myself. So and the ones about myself are a little more personal and I'm hesitant to share, but I will. But let's talk about the big ones first. Wish number one, I would have loved to see Carson Palmer or Philip Rivers win a Super Bowl. But especially Carson Palmer man, I really admire and really like and thought was way better than people realized. And I still to this day wish I could have seen Carson Palmer win a Super Bowl. He had a shot, he got close, but that makes me sad. So that's wish number one. One of those two guys, I wish it had, we would view Carson poem are so differently, if he'd won a Super Bowl in his career. I really believe that. I thought he was hamstrung by a bad organization in Cincinnati. It's a different Cincinnati now apparently. But man, oh man, I so badly would love to see one of those two legendary quarterbacks. Philip Rivers or Carson Palmer winning Super Bowl because I thought they had careers worthy of that even if they never reached it themselves. "Would be throwing passes to Julio Jones, my head would have exploded. I would have been so excited. And like I said, I'll repeat it again. It's weird to me that his time in Tennessee was a letdown. I don't know why that was. Was it the quarterback wasn't very good? Was it the system wasn't very good for him? Was he just hurt? The obvious thing to believe from that is that, well, Julio Jones must not be very good. He must be washed up. He's too old, he can't play. I'm a skeptical of Julio Jones going to Tampa. I don't know that he can play. I don't know that he's going to be very good. But I'm also hopeful. My fingers are crossed and I wanted to go well. That's a huge fan of Julio. A guy who admires him. I want it to go well. And I think it might. And I certainly want to at least acknowledge that Julio Jones is now going to Tampa on a roster that's really good. With a team that has Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, were potentially, it's kind of like in basketball, actually, you know, John wall went to LA clippers where they got Paul George and Kawhi Leonard and you're like, well, hey, the third best offender is now guarding John wall. That's a good matchup for John wall. Well, if you got Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, your third best cover corner, then is potentially guarding Julio Jones. That's a good matchup in my opinion. I think still, it's not quite that simple. That's an over simplification of that. But my point is that maybe having good receivers around him and Tom Brady could remind the world how good Julio Jones once was and he could give us a little bit of really good stuff. And I certainly hope that is possible because I would love to see Julio Jones catching touchdown passes from Tom Brady and looking really good. That excites me a lot and I have my fingers crossed. You could realistically say is the kings roster for the next ten years and i think that's saying a lot. Yeah and using the model. An it's a super over-simplistic phrase but if you're using the model of building from the backout as i said i think this all started when they got cal. Peterson calendars in this year. As far as i'm concerned demonstrated that he can be a number one. Goalie struggled a little bit recently. I can't remember how many games in a row he's lost anybody's on last nine of ten. We've talked about how we've got to score more. We've got more. We saw it early in this year. All the sudden power play was in the top five top. Ten it's gone cold ice cold and we've seen the power play drop you've seen the numbers of goals for the king's drop And we haven't been able to score five on five so that's a huge factor when it comes to being able to help out the goaltender. It's not just the defensive zone you know pressure. It's not just the stability behind you know in our in our own zone but we're not scoring goals every single go. We give up. Is that much more stressful on the goalie. And and the defense of pair. So there's a huge chain reaction in it filters all the way down to the reasons losing we've got into enough same time. you're right. cal. Peterson is shown he can be a number one. Goaltender in the nhl. He's someone that i believe is going to be that stable number one moving forward next year But at the same time you know you've got to score goals to win games. The kings haven't and because of that. You know these guys are being left out to dry and all the sudden it snowballs. Two three four five six goals against anaheim. You know stuff like that. We saw mike anderson cement himself. Toby beyond fled. He's started to do the same to rookies on the back end. You get a year of nhl hockey belt. Hopefully they can come back for their sophomore seasons and really take that step for the you know the forwards. They're a little bit behind in terms of you know smashing themselves. But there's you know let's face jesse there's probably fifteen names that you can name off as you just talked about that could be on the kings roster that are in this organization just fitting in that bonn six and that's where you talk about that small list of who's going to be on this team next year that we i sure no. You know it's going to be interesting. I'm excited because i think it's gonna be nice little refresher next year but it's been stale right now and it's unfortunate that we have seen that way. What have you This season but next year. I don't know man like make me a list of guys that you absolutely positively. Now we're going to be on the roster this year this short list and i don't. I don't say that to be critical. I mean like there's a ton of guys in ontario. There's free agency. They have tons of cap space. There's trades like at some point. You have too many guys if to start making drapes and so so sorry to bow. Tie all this back to what i was originally saying is. I don't know what the point of bringing in a kid like. Akil thomas into this into this dead spot in the season where the games do not matter. The team is clearly. There's something wrong with them on the ice at don't know what it is a knocking to even speculate but the games are not exciting and is not i. The schedule kept breaking exactly the way the kings would need to write saint. Louis minnesota wound up being really good. Saint louis wound up struggle. Kings did really poorly against san jose. But they did really great against the balloons and so we find ourselves. You know whatever. It was two weeks ago with a hand you know. Two handfuls of games left and you know playing against these these teams that they need to be and and they didn't. It's not that they lost tau they lost and it was the same thing last night. In anaheim it's ryan miller's last game one of the greatest american born goaltenders of all time bubble. What as you said. They played fifty bad minutes and ten good minutes again to that one game that they want And i can't tell you how many times i've been texting with people during games where it's just like man. This game is boring like this is boring And if you lose a boring game that's worse than if you lose an exciting game which seems like silly statement. What but like. I said there are a million questions or or is that there are million questions. It needs to be answered. There's the seattle expansion drafters free agency. There's all kids in ontario like this team. This team is about to reach a point where hard decisions have to be made the kinds of decisions that will sort of set the course of the franchise for a while and i've been totally fine. The last two years three years four years five years depending on maybe five but depending on how far back you think that this reconstruction reimagine rebuild. Let's put at leash. Anderson gave vulgarity and jared anderson dolan on online line together. They were all draft drafted in two thousand seventeen. They are at times three centers on the team. Although for the last handful of games velocity anderson had been playing together. And i have liked both of their games together more than i have liked either of their games apart. You're spot on you know. That's one of the bright spots ending. We can all take out in the last two or three games against anaheim for velocity to slowly start to show off some creativity some physicality. He's starting to find that when he gets physical puts himself in the play he's involved. He's around the puck. And all of a sudden i think it opens up his offense game because comfortable I don't know how much power forward so to speak. He was you know prior to being drafted in the age. But he's someone that has the size in the speed to be able to be a factor on that end and we know he has the skills you know that's why he was drafted in eleven overall. was a top five pick before he was injured going into the draft. So he's someone that. I think we can all hope to see. Continue but we've seen now in the past few games for the as anderson. He's someone that's been up and down and it's tough gay. This is the reason why you should never have a coach and a general manager who are hanging by a thread the way they are because it puts disproportionate significance on the first six games of next season. If you're Carson went and you walk in there to Chicago, and it does not go well immediately. It doesn't go great. Immediately, then all the conversation on ESPN 1000 radio and everywhere else and in the papers and everybody was talking about it. It's going to be being weird to be playing a position effectively sucking at it and doing so more or less with a knowledge as a very good chance. That you're kind of precipitating. I just think he's like because they're all starting caliber like we know. Daniel tastes starting caliber. Playoff guy. it he literally did it. Like tristan thompson was the starting center. That dethrone the warriors the healthy warriors i might add pre-k but still and you know robert is like up and coming like this is this is. It's so funny. Because the celtics had so many years of center spot being this black hole word. Nothing good could happen in. Al horford was like playing center but was he power forward than he became a full-time center. And now they have this. You know this the only position where they have real riches you know like is is this. It's weird bizarro. Czar celtics team so pritchard. There's another bright spot. oh yeah Maybe other than the detroit game which is really wiping zero point but still was able to release hell bound bit got a couple of steals couple of assists on what our thoughts his role when kimber comes back. Well so i. I want to start by saying that. Payton richard is perhaps one of the only celtics who can reliably three pointer and so for that alone. He should be a guy who gets heavy minutes. I you know he built the whole thing about pritchard on you know a lotta people myself. Included were kind of dubious that at the time. But the whole thing about pritchard is he was he was supposed to be an nba. Ready guy coming into the league. He played four years at oregon He in some big games there and everybody that kind of scattered him said is the guy who can play right away. So far he's lived up to that billing He's a shifty ball handler. he can shoot on on defense. You know he's not gonna knock anybody socks off but he tries pretty hard and he'll mix it up and get steals every now and then. I've been very impressed. I think It's interesting that in some ways just on play style loan. He's kind of the closest thing that we have to kemba walker on this team. That isn't kemba. Walker so I think prior to combat coming back. I wouldn't be shocked if pritchard is playing upwards of twenty minutes a game going forward just because of his ability to create on offense. I think when kemba comes back He's almost certainly going to get you. Know exclusive run as a bench guy. But i think he's got a role on this team and i think You know with when kemba does come back Keegan off the bench is going to be. I think a reasonably good a bench back court. So i've been impressed so far. Maybe caught my attention. that those couple pacer games. I mean he just. I mean he was. He closed amusing. The clothing lineups for them. Going down the stretch. And he's ability to space the floor like mcnabb greatest paschi think. Wanna say what is the second game but he i think he forced depot turnover..

I'm not gonna talk about this for talking about it but on the tristan thompson signing in general and i think that he gives you i think he's been a great locker room presence that he gets great for rob to have A guy like that showing him. Hey if you're good. mba You can you can be kardashian. Jason and vehicle guy and make a ton of money like the. I like tristan as a role model in like a hard working guy and by all accounts like he was a big vocal presence when the cavs were down three one in that finals and came back to win. So that you know he's he's a foxhole guy which i like. And i think he's a member of the starting five and again a great player The celtics at this great that this is a luxury the only part of the roster where they have luxury And i think that's why they wanna try and use that the two big lineup. What what brad was thinking. And quite frankly i kinda like the two big lineup in theory to start the year because it spent rob could play more in grant There was a way to alleviate some of the thinness on the wing with not knowing what who paid pritchard jeff teague. We're going to be coming into the year but like you said clue our thought viable in today's nba. Daniel thais is not enough. He said he can shoot threes but as a center position on a stretch for he can't he can't stretch the floor. From the power forward position it does kill the celtics spacing for a team. That is not doesn't have a ton of it. To begin with. I think with those type of lineups. That's where you end up with. You know jaylen and jayson kind of standing around looking like they don't know what to do and then when you know. The celtics are standing around looking like nobody knows what to do. That's what marcus smart takes the keys and everybody gets mad at smart for doing something with no one else will so i. I don't know. I think i think rob i'm very encouraged by rapport obscene for mob. I was very worried about him in the preseason. He had a couple of bad games but he looks great and he could be a really good player in this league for a long time if he can actually. That's real that he can start guarding some of these bigger centres without getting himself in foul trouble. you know i'm rambling on a little bit but just my final point. Is i think that this is again something. That's going to be beneficial in the playoffs against other big like giannis embiid instead of the guys that you're going to have to see where guys are going to be in foul trouble celtics having an assortment of guys who can absorb fouls incredibly play in tristan thompson. Daniel tastes and rob williams is going to be a luxury but for now. It's just tough to have all of those guys see the floor and you know you gotta think at least one of them is going to be going out in a trade if something like that. Were to come up where they need to attach a player My money would be on daniel thais actually in that situation because he is expiring on restricted free agent. And i'm not sure the celtics are going to have the money to pay him to stick around. So that's just my two cents..

"So i you know. I still think this team has a very high ceiling. But it's just with the lankford out with kemba walker out you know with no preseason to sort of figure out what this roster is. I just think it's going to be painful for the first half of the regular season. This is probably about what i expected to be. Honest coming into the year. Yeah i would largely agree with what sam just said. I think they're kind of two things in my mind that could change the trajectory of the celtics season going forward The first is obviously you know we have an all star. Point guard Sitting on ice Waiting to heal up from his knee injury. If kemba walker can come back and be eighty five to ninety percent of the guy that He was at the beginning of last season. That can certainly elevate the celtics into more realistic championship expectations. But the other thing to consider is this is something that we'll touch on later The players that the celtics could potentially add using their massive traded player exception from gordon hayward deal so those two things could certainly change Where the celtics. Take the celtics from From now just kind of a a borderline contender. That's not really a contender to actual contender. But barring a locker coming back at a complete health for the celtics acquiring blake bortles line star level player. There's definitely a ceilings to what this team of kit is capable of now. And you know like at as sam said before. Jaylen brown has taken some major steps As far as his improvement Goes jason tatum. Is still an all star level and the forward amount his best probably one of the top twelve ish guys in the league sir That's always gonna keep you in games but the celtics are definitely lacking back kind of third guy that can really put them over the top right now. I i agree with you guys. I mean think kemba walker health. Obviously that is the biggest x. Factor what he's gonna. What are you gonna look like an end. That trae player exception. I mean that's again. What twenty one. Twenty one million basically. Yeah i mean that's an all star level player if you find the right guy And i grew. She hasn't jail umbrella..
