"Our. I fire nation. Let's dive into the first of three speeches today. This one's by Ronald Reagan address to nation on the Challenger. Ladies and gentlemen. I do plan to speak to you tonight to report on the state of the Union but the events of earlier today have led me to change those plans. Today is a day for morning and remembering Nancy and I are pain to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger we know we share this pain with all the people of our country. This is truly a national loss. Nineteen years ago almost to the day. We lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the grounds. But we've never lost an astronaut and flight. We've never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we forgotten the courage. It took for the crew of the shuttle but they the Challenger seven were aware of the dangers but overcame them and did their jobs brilliantly. We more seven heroes Michael Smith. Dick's Gobi Judith. Resnik Ronald McNair. Ellison owner Zucca Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation together for the families of the seven. We cannot bear as you do the full impact of this tragedy. But we feel the loss and we're thinking about you so very much your loved ones where daring and brave and they had that special grace that special spirit says. GimMe a challenge. In a media with joy they had a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths they wished to serve in the dead. They served all of us. We've grown used to wonders in this century. It's hard to dazzle us but for twenty five years the United States space program has been doing just that we've grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that we've only just begun. Were still pioneers. They the members of the Challenger crew were pioneers. And I want to say something to the school children of America who were watching the live coverage of the shuttle's takeoff. I know it is hard to understand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It's all part of the process of exploration and discovery. It's all part of taking a chance in expanding man's horizons. The future doesn't belong to the faint hearted it belongs to the brave the challenger crew was pulling us into the future and we'll continue to follow them. I've always had great faith and respect for our space program in what happened today does nothing to diminish it. We don't hide our space program. We don't keep secrets to cover things up we do it all upfront and public vast. The way freedom is and we wouldn't change it for a minute. We'll continue our questions space. That will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews in. Yes more volunteers. More civilians more teachers in space. Nothing ends here. Our hopes and our journeys continue. I want to add that. I wish I could talk to every man woman who works for NASA or who worked on this mission and tell them your dedication and professionalism has moved and impressed us for decades and we know of your anguish. We share it. There's a coincidence today on this day. Three hundred ninety years ago. The Great Explorer Sir Francis. Drake died aboard ship off the coast of Panama in his lifetime. The great frontiers were oceans in a historian later said he lived by the sea died on it and was buried in it. I I wasn't able to find any of the original material but it is mentioned in that in that Rainer enterpise Liga's Rayner himself in researching for this article that was published seventeen years ago got a lot of files released by Scotland Yard Scot in Scotland. The Yard had three folders about hartill called him a quote unquote notorious offender and in there was a copy of this probably the only copy of this autobiography that he wrote while in prison yeah and shouts out to Richard Rayner because he did so much legwork on this this story a highly enough sorta faded from the conversation until hardworking journalists and historians like Rainer hunted it down. I was able to find out out that in in two thousand there was a play put on in London called scam to the tune of fame yeah about out this this very episode so a couple years before Raynor's article so I don't know if one fed into the other sure maybe sort of bubbling up Zeitgeist and it's you know one of those things where where people kind of knew about it but it really took the dedicated efforts of of serious writers and researchers to really bring this to light the I duNno. I mean listeners if you you're in Iowa or that part of the country. Does any of this ring familiar to you. A lot of people have never heard about this before I knew very little about it I had heard of kind and if the drake swindle but I didn't know about its relationship to a very specific part of the United States and if you'd like to learn more about it to Richard Rayner wrote a book about this us in two thousand and three called Drake's fortune the fabulous true story of the world's greatest confidence artists which title those you have to be careful with those sorts superlatives. What exactly is a con artists help so books it helps sell books. That's true and it's a real book. If you pay for it you will get a copy of the book. It's not like Drake's Drake's fortune. We might have to save that one for October. however we we know that despite him passing away people still believed the story the story that he created well the story that he punched hunched up from. Yes Sir Francis Drake is one of those historical figures who has not aged well because growing up especially in the West a lot of school children were hot. Let's say the sanitized version of this guy's story and he did impressive things. He's got a lot of accolades yes. He accomplished accomplish things yes yeah he was the second person ever to circumnavigate the globe to first Englishman for whatever that counts for that's big that's a big deal with the English and he also had the approval of the Queen as far as his privateer. Ian and his piracy went. She was completely fine with his activities. He wasn't in his time in his country. He was not considered a a criminal however of course the Spanish hated him while he wasn't considered a criminal because basically you know it's one of those technicalities. If you don't make something a a crime you're not a criminal if you if you produce results people can ignore the way you got those results and that's definitely the case with Francis Drake and a lot of the privateers here's who are active in the eighteenth and nineteenth century absolutely he was differentiated from you know your independent mom and pop piracy she business by the commission from Queen Elizabeth and when privateers received this sort of will they were called letters of Marque wouldn't privateers received one of these things it was fairly specific described where and when he could operate and against whom so oh he was given the green light to prey on Spanish galleons and by the time he was twenty type on early start he was deep in the privateer in Game mm-hmm. Francis Drake looted a lot of Spanish gold and interrupt you. He's Spanish gold is a bit of a misnomer. Remember as well right so it's not like the Spanish just had the gold or made the gold with a Spanish came to the Americas what would become called the Americas and you know took gold that they found there you know they took the gold from native populations from those communities unity's and we're taking it back to Spain it was in Spanish possession at the time but I think a lot of the way that we've talked about history especially pirate history and sort of this this romantic notion of the Caribbean and the back and forth between the continents we talk about the British we talk about the English we talk about the Spanish Portuguese to a certain extent and and their gold but it was only Spanish because the Spanish took it right and that is a very good point because when you look at it that way which is the most accurate way to look at the sequence of events Francis Drake was stealing goods that had already been stolen right and it just had this this is thin veneer of legality and one thing we know about this regardless of the distinctions the rationalizations tossed about during the course of Drake's career. He died a very very well off dude. That's part of the romance of of the ideas especially when either at the time or in retrospect you're talking about these somewhat scurrilous characters who skirted at the edge of legality were were enemies to some friends to others somewhat legal pirates working with sort of the stamp of approval of the Queen Gene and so as these pirates are pirating their way around the Caribbean. It's only natural to assume as they're hiding in Coz in little Indian and let's exactly accolades. you know there might be a couple chest somewhere and drake.
