"A listener note. This story is about rape investigations and includes descriptions of sexual violence. Jen Sinato had been waiting for this day for a long time. She'd woken up early put on her black striped suit and drove five hours to attend the Louisville Metro Council's Public Safety Committee. Meeting the council had called the police to answer questions about their handling of rape cases in the wake of our story. About Jen's case Jen stopped on the way to the hearing to pick up a fellow survivor. Another woman who reported raped the Louisville Metro Police Department and was also still waiting for answers. The two women along with Jen's niece arrived at City Hall together. They got on the elevator with high hopes for what they might expect from the hearing. Hopefully some clarity accountability and other objective smart mines to look at things. We've all known that are being put out now in the public. The criminal justice system especially for Sexual Assault Rape Victims in Louisville really needs to be revamped the treatment of victims shaming them and importantly not solving their case or getting any answers. Jen reach for the women's hands as they walked into the chamber. She was among the last to arrive by the time she got there. The police were already settled in the front of the Rue to press people. Few men in suits and Lieutenant Shannon Lauder. The head of the special victims unit been called by the Council to explain why her department clear so few rape cases. I arrest and so many by exception the eight Metro Council members in attendance. Were seated as well looking out of the room from their elevated seats and in the audience sat the survivors women who had reported raped the Louisville Metro Police Department women who were inspired by Gen Story to come out and seek your own answers for most of them. His hearing was as close as they would get to their day in court. This is dig a podcast from Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting and Buba Public Media. I'm eleanor.

"I kinda bouncing back. Now was that a? Funny move by Jimmy Butler or was that kind of a snarky move by Jimmy Butler. Are you going to go Sinato conspiracy theory? I'm here and suggest that this means that he doesn't like Brett Brown. I'm just asking you a question you can answer her. I I don't I'm not gonna go there. No. I think that he probably just well, he probably could have just rolled with it. But I guess he's just being literal. And he he does have that reputation for kind of being unable to to. Hide what he feels. And so I don't think he was necessarily bothered by it. But he also wasn't just going to let it slide. Yeah. It just was like, I don't know. I mean, I get your name. Right. Like you wanna be called by your name? But I will say this. I don't think that those things that you discussed earlier are mutually exclusive. I think that he was being funny. But also think that yeah. I don't think he loves Br Brown that much. There's a little truth in every joke. And I haven't heard much reporting about how he feels about Brett Brown. I've heard some stuff about him bead. But I don't I don't know you might know about well him beat a very close now. Jimmy. Yeah. So there might be all say is there. I will knowledge that there could be a little something there, even though it seems like it's an accurate. I so let me ask you this yesterday in that game that game. The Sixers jumped out early Toronto made it close at the end. Why was awesome Siaka had some moments but faded a little down the stretch. Kyle Lowry was not great and also his decision. In making the end of that game was ridiculous. He tried to nutmeg Tobias Harris at the end of the game. And if you don't know what nutmeg is basically, he he tried to dribble FU Tobias Harris legs like and then grabbed the ball on the other end of just kind of do a trick shot for a layup. I just like that's the type of move where it's like come on, man. Like if you're going to do that like LeBron did that? Did he do it to who? Did he do it too in a playoff game? Try every pass the ball to Tristan Thompson. I don't remember who he did it too. But if you do that like you got to connect you can't do like if I'm Nick nurse, the raptors coach, I'm furious. If because you tried that because you if you do that, that's gotta work something like swaggie might try in a close game. But really you should only do that when you're up twenty in a regular season game. Right. I mean to do that at the end of a playoff game when you're down was just insane. To me, it is fringed because Lowry, especially does a lot of little things that help. Yes game. He's not the guy who's the showboat or a guy who generally like you can question. Okay. Some big games. He can disappear. Whatever maybe the moment is too big. He won't take the shot that knucklehead by any stretch of the imagination that is not his reputation at all. Which is why I was so surprised. Yeah. Seemed like a departure for sure it was crazy. And then yesterday in the nightcap. Nicoli Yokich if you aren't on that bandwagon by now, I mean, the bandwagon might just be closed at this point that dude average twenty three twelve and seven against the Spurs in a seven game series and within a night with one night off came back and win for what thirty seven eight and nine date, and they didn't really double them either. They had cancer for the most part a little bit of miles Leonard little bit of Zach Collins, and he just abused. Everybody matching is he the best offense big man in the game. Offense. Yeah. I mean, this competition is really Embiid L L take Yokich passer. If you call Anthony Davis big man, which is. Oh, man. He's a much better passer. Davis Davis better scorer though as good a rebounder, though. I'd take Davis as writing take Davis..

Chicago was trained at the university of Chicago green says he maintains his belief in that sort of thinking which was actually defeated by history. Total liberalisation start ties you talked about the massive state assets. Particularly oil companies that are managed by the state today. Well next year, there's likely to be a savage privatization of those assets. The quantity and. Struggle against workers rights and social rights in Brazil to protesters. It makes the. That protects the poorest of the poor and workers in relation to their employers. So from an economic standpoint, but there is a different situation. He noted. Is once again adopting a new liberal agenda, very strong, neoliberal agenda beyond what happened in the nineteen ninety s and can you talk about the cabinet? The full scenario is putting together. Now, five former military officials serving in his cabinet praising the former military dictatorship. It's really unprecedented. Certainly. Jill. Moderna content was very difficult to attain a goal tests and modern democracy with the appointment of so many military people as to happen in the future is not therefore it is an alliance one that involves externally alignment with Trump policies highly regressive DuPont, as I've indicated economic standpoint radicalized of neoliberalism, but I would also also not attention to bolster senators appreciation of a fundamentalist agenda from the standpoint of customs, he is very close to Neo Pentecostal isn't which in Brazil recently has been adopting positions hostile towards political minorities in Brazil, even against majorities such as blacks and women when she did. Cheese. Hostile messages in his discourse. Support. It would be very difficult for this to happen without strong military support. Just also. To be consistent with his discourse of lifting up the military dictatorship in Brazil the dictatorship that extended from nineteen sixty four to nineteen five. Also NATO is whole life has been uplifting. Not only the dictatorship itself. But also the methods that the dictatorship used to stay in power, including torture. Both Sinato has threatened to destroy in prison or banish political opponents certainly you would be chief among them. You ran against him for president. And man he was running against before Lula is in prison. Are you concerned? Please legit schools. I'm more concerned about the consequences of discourse on regular citizens as an impact on myself because what is happening in Brazil is that. Regular folk journalists diversity professors. But my concern is with common citizens common citizens who may be suffering anguish at this time. This'll be because of no assurance for their lives on the part of the state. This is the problem that Brazil is facing and the resistance will also be based on those persons because Brazil the situations very complex forty five percent of the voters. I won the one. I'm going to organize and resist. So I believe in Brazil, there will be as there is United States. "Doctor auto new stutter in one thousand nine hundred forty considered that the swellings described here might be possible it might possibly be due to syphilis infection which. The Philistines would contracted syphilis from the ark of the covenant or again that an outbreak of syphilis lined up with the presence of the arc or was attributed to the presence of the of the arc in some fashion. Is there anything that syphilis doesn't explain? I mean, we go back to our earlier discussions of syphilis on this this podcast, it it seems like you can pretty much scrubbed just about everything. The only thing is you probably get into a an argument about wind syphilis would have impacted given region. No by that. I didn't mean that syphilis is a good explanation for everything. I just people have tried it on everything it's like every powerful force in human history for sure every historical event has a syphilis hypothesis as we'll come up repeatedly in this episode. It's not necessary to invoke bronze punk biowarfare explanations to justify legends of the arc. But it is certainly I think plausible that forms of biological warfare. Were practiced in the ancient world that who knows that the ancient the ancient Hebrews or or any of the other peoples of the time period could have figured out how to do germ warfare and could've used it. And in fact, we have some pretty interesting evidence that it did actually happen at least in one case in the second millennium BC. That's right. We're talking about the Hittite so Asia Minor going back to what fifteen hundred BC around then. So I think the fourteenth century BC. So there was an epidemic at the time in the fourteenth century BC known to historians as the Hittite plague that spread throughout the Middle East and historical records of this pestilence. Appearing correspondence still a to the option Phero cannot in from around thirteen thirty five BC, and they say that there's a horrible plague that spread throughout the land. It's affecting some Venetian cities. And there was a fear that it was being spread by donkey's, which led to them barring people from infected cities from coming into other cities and from preventing donkeys from being used in traveling caravans. And so there is a paper. I wanted to talk about published in medical hypotheses in two thousand seven by a micro biologist named Ciro EG. No, Travis sonata. Called the Hittite plague an epidemic of Tula Ramia and the first record biological warfare. And this is a really interesting I bought this. So Trivisonno believes that the evidence indicates that the Hittite plague was in fact, an epidemic of Tula Ramia, which is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Francis. Sela to rinses to Laurie Mia kin spread between animals and humans. So it's a potentially zoonotic infection and it can spread via several routes including tick bites and by just direct contact or inhalation of infected aerosols, it has different symptoms depending on the route of transmission, including high fever and ulcers and swelling of the lymph glands in the pneumonic version of this infection leads to a cough. Chest, pain difficulty breathing. Incandescently? Be deadly tool arenas, actually, often known to kill off large numbers of rabbits, which has led to it. Being commonly known as rabbit fever into specially with. About modern medical intervention, primarily antibiotics it can be fatal to humans. So it is a deadly dangerous disease. Travis Sinato says that after the outbreak of this plague hit the Phoenician city of semi-rural, the Hittites also known as the nesh I'ts attacked the area and looted. So you bet the city weakened by disease. The Hittites say, hey, some free stuff. So they run in the tact the city, and they loot it taking along livestock among the mini spoils of war. But soon after they returned the Hittite raiders were hit with an outbreak of disease that Trevor sano Travis auto also things was to Llerena, and this would make sense because they brought the livestock the animal hosts were ARC's if you will for the bacteria, then while the Hittites were weakened with this epidemic. Another people known as the ours. Owens attacked them. Then Trevor sonata writes that their historical records indicate strange incidents in win like wondering ram. Appeared in ours. Alwa- and the ours Owens, of course, wouldn't pass up free livestock. So they incorporated these Rams into their flocks..

"Three siblings is a documentary short. It's twenty three minutes. It takes place in Sao Paulo Brazil, and basically three siblings with different gender identities and sexual orientations. We follow them around during pride month and how they kind of overcome these challenges that they face every day in Brazil, which is the homophobia and transphobia that exists in Brazil. And just to give our listeners in idea of how prevalent it is in Brazil won. LGBTQ person is murdered every day in Brazil. So it's very shocking statistics. And since these recipients are from Avella, it's even more challenging because they have even larger hurdles to overcome every day. So we follow them around during pride month. And then when they go to the south hollow pride parade, which is the world's largest with about three point, five million people in attendance, they bond and unexpected ways. So that's what's really curious about it. And it's really a more uplifting documentary. If you will definitely felt very much discount of the uplifting tone because there's a lotta violence. But what you see those three brothers, it's a lot of love and warmth among Dan, you know, even the straight brother, he's almost protective of the other two as well. How did you find them by the way is rather interesting. So my partner, my life partner and also my producing partner. Sanders Silva is born and raised in this Avella Mancha's you'll in the south zone of Sao Paulo. So it really started back in June. Two thousand and sixteen are nephew is turning one years old. We came from Rio de Janeiro where were living at the time to Sao Paulo for the birthday party. While we're at the birthday party, I noticed Luigi, Mila, the transgender sibling. And then I just ask, oh, who's that? He's like, oh, well, that's Angelo sibling. That's Lucci Mila. And so I thought, okay, that's rather interesting. And then didn't really think too much about the Olympics happened. We got on with their lives. We were quite busy working fast forward to March two thousand seventeen, and all these mega events had already happened in Brazil and our goddaughter slash niece. It was her christening. And of course we had to go to south hollow and throw a big party for that. So we go there for that. And then I noticed the gay brother walk into the room at the party Victor, and he's very flamboyant as you'll see from the film that I had to take note. And so of course, I asked Sandra, who's that? And he said, that's Angela's brother. And then the others civlian is a transgender. I said. Wait, they're all related. He said, yeah, they're all related. Very matter of fact. And I said, that's fascinating. Can we do documentary about them? So that was Sandra's role was to really get them on board and because they are longtime family, friends of his as how they kind of got on board for this contest and have they sing. The final results only Lou Jamila. We were in Brazil back in March, and we tried to get all three of them together. So they could see the final result. And that was a little bit like hurting cats dress to try to get everybody in the same place at the same time was rather difficult. Ludmila does approve of it and they are very happy about the success. And the one beautiful thing that actually really came out of this documentary is as you'll see from the documentary, the beginning, the beginning of the film, Angelo, the straight sibling is a little bit more standoffish. He is a little bit homophobic a little bit transphobic at the beginning of the film. But when we went through this process of following them around during pride month, they did actually grow closer which is still resulted in there. Everlasting relationship today as siblings they are closer than they understand each other more because of the documentary and she and I find this the commensurate very relevant because we're close to an election in Brazil where you have clearly homophobic candidate leading the polls. I mean, there's lot of rejection against in as well. But I also see that in Brazil specially among the, you know, the LGBT communities in women as well. Lot of kind of, you know, protests in the streets because people the, they are reacting against this homophobia and this kind of horrible thoughts of VO candidate luxury sonata. How did you feel in your experience in Brazil about that? Well, I did interviews airball Sinato once at a protest, particularly that was the protests that was in favor of impeaching former president Juma Rousseff when she was ousted back in two thousand sixteen..

Far-right candidate stabbed at campaign event in Brazil

"That's both sonata holding up a journalist's camera tripod, and then pretending to use it as machine gun and the candidate is saying we are going to execute our political opponents, by the way, both in auto is sometimes described as Brazil's Donald Trump that scene played out at a campaign rally last week. Now, he's in the hospital most Sinato was stabbed in the stomach yesterday. He survived. But doctors say a full recovery is going to take months, Michael FOX is a journalist based in Brazil. I asked him first about the attack on presidential candidate, John Bosco. So he was at a campaign rally in town in media should ice about one hundred twenty five miles north of Rio de Janeiro. So southern Brazil eastern coast. He was being carried through the streets by his supporters when assailant came up and stabbed him in the gut. He kind of bent over. According to local reports, the supporters beat the assailant, and then he was rushed to the hospital originally. They thought it was just a superficial. Wound bought a fawn further tests. They noticed he was hemorrhaging. It had hit a vein in his abdomen and two or three cuts to his intestines. So he underwent surgery, which he laughed last night around seven PM in a stable condition. And that's the situation right now this morning. He was brought to a hospital in Sao Paulo where they're like you said he expects to be there for roughly seven to ten days. But this is just a terrible terrible turn of events in a campaign that is just flipped on its head is a picture of who both auto is. I mean, he is he really Brazil's Donald Trump. He is Brazil's Donald Trump and more. So he's a former captain in the military under the dictatorship. He's been a congressional Representative for the last twenty years on the far. Right. So his views are extremely have been extremely conservative for a long long time. But that's really garnering support at this moment with this kind of. Groundswell for nationalist populist leaders around the world. So he is so controversial. He's been fine for his sexist, homophobic, and racist rhetoric. He's about to stand trial on the supreme court for comments, racist, homophobic, comments. And he's come out and said that he would rather have his son dead, then be gay. So that's a picture of who this guy is. And why he is so controversial. And why he's so
