A highlight from Lynn Public Library (Hodge Podge) Book Event

"What's happening everybody, it's Kira and Ben and we're at another live show to talk about Ben's book, HodgePodge. This time we are here in Lynn where Ben is from. So Ben, tell us a little bit about growing up and your experiences and your life here. So many of you probably heard of Lynn from the poem, Lynn, Lynn the city of Sydney, never grew up the way you went in and there's a bunch more to that but it's inappropriate so I won't say it. Growing up in Lynn was for me different because I grew up in a middle -class family. We weren't technically poor but we weren't technically rich. It's a very diverse city so I was lucky enough to grow up with black friends, Latino friends and that was something I've always thought was good because it made me appreciate other people's cultures more. The one thing I will say that I did have the unfortunate situation of growing up during the and 80s the 70s where they were like, the Russians are attacking, get under the desk and my name is Brunisław Wozniak so you can imagine what the kids were like to me. They're like, your people stink and I'm like, I'm Polish, I'm not Russian. So that was kind of rough but I mean, Lynn gets a bad rap. There's a lot of good things about Lynn and that's why I put them into the book. There's a lot of history here like we were one of the first night games for baseball. We had a lot of good stuff going on. Over time, hopefully people will realize that we're not a sin city and we do have some quality people in it. That's awesome. Thank you so much. That's so exciting. Alright and now we're here with Lindsay who's at the head of adult circulation here at the Lynn Library. Lindsay, thank you so much for hosting us and having us today. How did you get into library sciences and what makes you passionate about books? So I don't actually have a degree in library science. As the head of the adult department, the city of Lynn just designates I have to have a bachelor's degree to hold a librarian position here at the library. But it was back about, so I've been here for almost 11 years. Few years back, well 11 years ago, I was just looking for another job and I came across the city had the job for a library associate. So I started off as a library associate here and then worked my way up. I went back to school, got my bachelor's degree while I was here at the library and was able to be promoted to librarian as the head of the adult circulation department. That's very exciting. It sounds like it's something you're passionate about. Now are you from Lynn or Massachusetts originally? I'm from Lynn for the most part. When I was born, my parents lived in Revere but we moved here within four years of that. So I've been here since then. I did live in Florida for four years but I've been in Lynn the rest of the time. That's awesome. Do you have any favorite stories about Lynn or any monuments or places that really hold a special place in your heart around here? Well obviously the library. When we were little, we would come here often. I would walk around and pretend it was my castle because it's such an old, beautiful building and then when we got a personal computer, we honestly stopped coming to the library as often as we did when I was very young. So it had been some time but when I applied for the job, I think it had been the first time I had been back here in a long time but I had grown in appreciation for architecture over that time. So when I came in, it was like seeing it in a different light as an adult and just having an appreciation for the building. I really like Victorian architecture which Lynn has a lot of. Unfortunately, we haven't retained as much colonial architecture because fires and things like that over the years. So Salem is very fortunate they have that but Lynn does have a lot of Victorian and even more modern era type architecture. So the library is an excellent example. It was built in 1900 so it's been around for 123 years now. I would say out of anything that sticks out to me, obviously, here at the library because I work here. Obviously. And that's so cool. I had no idea the history of this library. So being around for 123, oh my goodness, that's such a long time. Looking around, it still looks very well restored. Do you work on it? No, you wouldn't be in charge of any of the restoration or things like that, right? No, there hasn't been a lot of restoration or anything while I've been here. Obviously, there's updates to the building. Electricity was added at some point in time. It was gas light fixtures previous to that. But you can also see things like we have limited electricity available like in this room we're in right now. There's literally one or two. We have one hanging down from an extension cord, electrical outlets. So the building itself was beautiful. Obviously, it wasn't built for modern time and we do run into some snags here and there when it comes to updating it to be more modern. We're lucky we're able to get Wi -Fi throughout the building but it was a challenge maneuvering that when it was first a thing just because you have to figure out the best placement in order to get the best signal throughout the entire building that's made out of limestone. So the building is beautiful and I love it and whatever they can do to preserve it, I'm all in favor of but it also has its limitations and challenges because of its age. Of course now is this considered a historical site or a historical building? So do you have to go through those channels like through this town? Yes, it is a designated historical site. The thing is that like you'll notice like the lighting that all stuff was things that was done in like probably the 70s, 80s, 90s. I don't know exactly when it was designated historical site off the top of my head but maybe those weren't things that might fall under what you might need to do like now as part of that. I also don't know like what the parameters of that are necessarily but they haven't been any major updates since I've been here so I haven't been through that process. Very cool. So what made you passionate about like books and reading and really like attracted you to the library besides the architecture? So I hate to say this, I'm not much of a reader. I do read. I actually facilitate the Movie Night Book Club. So it's a book club that compares books that were adapted into movies. So we talk about the book, we talk about the movie, we talk about the differences, the dislikes and likes between the two of them, changes that were necessary or completely unnecessary. So that's gotten me reading a lot more I will admit but what attracted me to library works I'm very organized and detail oriented which is definitely something you have to do in order to keep things in order. So that's more what drew me to library work I guess more my organizational side. That's awesome. So what is some of like the better books and movies that you've seen lately? That sounds like such a fun and interesting club. So I'll give you the best and the worst starting with the worst, Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is an excellent movie, it is a very strange book. It is nothing like the book and the movie are nothing alike. The entire club pretty much agreed on that. We had a lot to talk about because we all really disliked the book whereas you weren't expecting that because the movie is such like a classic timeless type movie. Probably the best is The Color Purple is an excellent adaptation from the book to the movie and we had a really great discussion and it's such a classic. It's definitely different but it was a great adaptation so best and worst. That's so exciting. Now are you guys going to travel like as a group to go see the new Color Purple that they are doing that's coming out in December? I don't have plans for that. At first when I heard it I was like how are you going to redo such a wonderful classic and then I'm like I've seen previous one and I'm like oh it doesn't look too bad. So I would definitely encourage the group to go and see it but we don't have any plans as of now to do it together as a group. That's awesome though. Well thank you so much for sitting down with us and talking to us and again thank you so much for having us today. Are you going to stay and listen for a little bit? I do have to do some work at my desk but I hope everybody else stays and has a wonderful time. Thank you, thank you. Well like we have said we are so happy to be here at the Lynn Library and back to our book Hodgepodge. Ben can you tell us about one of your favorite sites here and what inspired one of your favorite stories in the book? So one of the most beautiful sites here in Lynn is probably the view from High Rock Tower. If you go up there and you look out across you can see Boston and as a kid I mean in Lynn people don't think of beauty so like we grew up in the streets and we do what kids in the streets do. We run around we cause havoc and we just have a blast you know but you don't really think of beauty. So when you go up to the High Rock Tower and you look out and you actually get your breath taken away by just the awe -inspiring view I mean for a kid growing up like you know in this area it's something that really touches your heart cause you're like wow you know there's a whole new world out there besides you know being on the streets so that was kind of inspirational for me and then Egg Rock being at Egg Rock and like looking out at you know not Egg Rock Red Rock and looking out at Egg Rock and stuff like that I mean like I said there's so much beautiful things here in Lynn and it's just overlooked because of all the different poems and negativity that's thrown out about this city but if you actually look deep down inside there's a pearl in the oyster there is a pearl in the oyster and you know you just gotta really look. Absolutely and I think you could say that for like a lot of cities especially in Massachusetts but you found it and I think you really did highlight it in your stories off recording we were talking a little bit about the story of Steve into May and how you're doing a prequel to that do you want to speak on that or are we trying to keep it like a secret? No it's fine so there's two stories in the beginning of the book A Common Christmas and Cold Hard Truth and you know I threw them together and when I did I didn't think the response was going to be as good as it was to it when people read the stories they liked the banter between the two characters I didn't think that was going to be the stories that people would flock to so I was kind of like shocked at that it was kind of cool that they did so they were asking me like you know what we want more and I was like well I don't really have more but then like I was like all right well I'll try and come up with some stuff so I started thinking about stuff and I was like all right I can put this in there that in there I got a story I can put together so I was like I can do that and then I'm looking at different ideas for like the fantasy aspect of what I did I'm looking at that and then I have a book a story in there called The Weezer about this serial killer that has asthma and I'd like to finish her story I thought that was pretty funny it's a little comedy but there's a lot I want to do hopefully I have the time to do it I am kind of old but you know I'm hoping that I can get some stuff done. Awesome well there it sounds like we have a lot to look forward to in the future.

"sin city" Discussed on Jesus Stories

"So what are jesus. And his disciples doing in the region of caesarea. Fila by or in sin city. Jesus as a very important teaching to share with his disciples here and such a setting will contrast the culture and the surroundings with his teaching and definitely make a permanent impression upon his disciples so as they come to the region jesus asks his disciples and interesting question. Who do people say that. The son of ban is in other words. What are people saying about me. The disciple say that something he is john the baptist others think he's elijah or jeremiah or another one of the prophets and jesus counters with. Who do you think i am. The simon peter is the one who jumps in with the answer. You are the messiah the son of the living god. Jesus replied simon. Peter is both important and controversial. Let me read it to you and full. You are blessed. Simon son of john because my father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now i say to you that you are peter which means rock and upon this rock. I will build my church and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And i will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. So let's deconstruct this reply. I jesus pronounces a blessing on simon peter. This revelation jesus says comes from jehovah. God quote my father in heaven in quote not from anyone on earth then jesus states. You are peter. See jesus is changing. Simon's name to peter. This name is rendered in the greek language in which the new testament is written beans small stone. it's also a masculine now. And the jesus goes on further to say up on this rock. I will build my church. And this is where the controversy begins. Some will say that the rock that jesus is building his church. Upon is peter as the first head of the church others point to the word rock and say that this is not the same rock that peter is called. This rock refers to a massive boulder. And it's also a feminine noun so this language could not mean that peter is the rock upon which the church is built these folks point to the statement of peter. You're the messiah. The son of the living god and state that this is the true rock upon which jesus will build his church. This statement this confession. There is also a school of thought that says that jesus was pointing to himself jehovah. God and jesus are referred to as the rock in various places in old testament writings. I'll leave all of this for you to mull over. All of these interpretations could be correct. Are maybe you might prefer one over the other jesus continues. He says i will build my church. Now this is the first mention of church in the new testament. This word church does not refer to a building. It was the word for a group of people who were called out for a particular purpose. And jesus says as he continues talking about his church. The powers of hell cannot conquer it. It will stand and even actively be on the offensive against the power of satan. Then jesus gives us apostles access and authority he says and i will give you the keys of the kingdom of.

Episode 67 Sin City and Our World - Sin City

"But his uncle is very passionate project that he very much didn't start with any characters from any other marvel or DC Universe, but did it himself. There are so fantastically done. The characters are all distinct in their personalities in the drawing of them. The fact that it's all black and white and occasionally spot colors. But it's in defiance of what you think of a comic book that to get that level of detail that level of articulation and movement and so forth, but having only be 2D if you will instead of the whole palette of colors, I know I'm mixing my metaphors there. He just does fantastic things in that stylized way and it's most of them are what we call film noir if you will comic noir. There's nobody good in these. They all have sorted paths, they often have other genders than being a hero. You know what I mean? Sometimes they end up doing heroic things because who they're going after isn't even worse bad guy.

I don't want to work with them. Even a regular match right even just like a normal singles one pinfall. You know time limit of twenty minutes. That's that but back to adam. Adam answer your question mixed mutt. This by the way he said also questioned for adam. Do you ever want to make a ring return. If so what. Gimmick would you want to do well so i did recently start doing some stuff up at the west coast wrestling company with rick. Ellis other people That could eventually lead to an in ring return not even entering turn so i never wrestled a match. I trained from two thousand seven to two thousand fourteen. I never had a match for whatever different reasons. It was one point. There was a promotional war where we had to choose sides and that was the whole drama thing and then you should just kept happening every time i was supposed to wrestle match. I never actually wrestled a match. But i would train like five days a week like we go to new wave training two days a week and then the other three days ellison i and another friend bought a ring off high spots and put it in his backyard an actual ring so we would go to that ring and we would train on the days. We weren't going to new wave. So i was training five days a week in the ring. So i i. I wasn't great. But i was okay. i just. I'm thirty five years old..

I'll show you a psychopath like man. I hated that position. He's crazy. But i was also defensive end i i went both ways which is exhausting and defensive. End is fun. Playing defense is fun. Because you know if you're on the on the d. Line whatever tackle motherfucker. That's where you're there. But oh line kind of blocking and i thought it was so boring and then finally got the opportunity. They put me at tight end. And i was sweet man so i you know a few games i got i got to catch passes and and make i was never the fastest kid in the world but you know it was fun just being tight end and then i remember. I think i got sick and i missed. Two practices lost my position lawsuit and as a coach. You know what happened. And they're like well. You have been showing the practice. And it's like i i was sick. I'm ten years old. You know like what the fuck do you mean. And i lost. I lost that position straight up. And it's like that's still sticks with me today. if i don't show up. I lose my lose. My spot fucking nuts right russell mentality to i know i know i hate it because it is like still in my head like i have to show up even when i don't wanna go i'm like i gotta go Be at so funny when you think about like all the problems that they've discovered with Use sports you know especially the contact sports. Yeah the head trauma all this stuff. you know. there's very safe now. They tried making safe but back in the day. You just had like like these dump parents that have no idea about like You know first aid or any kind of lake medical experience. They're just like all. Rub some dirt in it you know. They're slapping upside the fuck inhale helmet you know like if you fuck up they. They slapped across the helmet. They grabbed her by the face. Mask and shake you fucking around. You know all this kind of stuff i do. I straight up got smoked twice to plays in a row in one game. I must have been concussed. I must have been like you know. Get back in there. Get back in there. Shake it off. Kid get back in there. I remember like getting like the the wind knocked out of me. Like if you games and you're just remember getting the wind knocked daddy when you're younger. Yes and it just feels like you're dying you can't breathe and they're like the parents are just like get up and get back in there. They have no idea last thing you want. Is someone yelling at you. And you're in that much pain just like yeah can't breathe. You're yelling me just to get back out there. I'm telling you all. I love it. They're fun memories but they're also like traumatic memories at the same time it's nuts. Man now is true. Even when i played. I played basketball coaches. Were always just. I can just hear them yelling but i'm basketball easier to tune them out. Yeah because you're just trying to focus on the play and making your shots like but here you got to play better fucking defense dumb ass you stupid motherfucker get on them fucking pussy fucking pussy place of defense. I'll pull you. I'll pull you can't talk like that anymore of kids and you know there is to an extent like that's a lot but i don't think yelling at kids and like telling them like what they're doing wrong is bad. It's an idea that governor would embrace. There's not always and not alignment of three governments that also have a tremendous amount of resources. And if that benefits the city of Miami, I would be foolish not to explore. Miami Dade Transit officials estimate a $900 million price tag for two mile tunnel under the river that would take about four years to build. Musk says You can do it for 30 million in his little six months. Just last month, Fort Lauderdale officials went to Vegas to see mosques tunnels They're looking at building one under the New River.

That's sheldon another good one yet it is. That's that's my favorite. Oh yeah l. is my favorite. Yeah that's a really good one. I i also really are thoroughly. Enjoy this and i love the net. Just because it's different not just because of of how unique in how great your work is that because like this is a self-contained pope crime new. Our story But also enjoy the fact that. It's a very bold story and frank miller in with disturbance definitely trying to send a message. Maybe not anything like that has any gravitas in reality by trying to send the mercies of you. Can you can tell a story. You can sell a story. Many different formats like a book in many different hats and they can work and the whole idea of having more on paper as protagonists. You like this is your good guy this but then you read the story and you realize this is something that's exceptionally well done. And this a who was flawed. Which i think is really appreciate it. Because in the early nineties superheroes roman getting stronger right more godly superheroes only getting more and more power than things are getting more and more out there and this is a story that in his routes is grounded. You know sin city to be anywhere you know i. It could be anywhere in. We really have. Here is just a a city where people were led down by crooked news from top to bottom and we have a guy who did his damnedest to fight back and again in his mind and in a lotta regards did win the only the only aspect where the crooked politicians in the crooked police one are literally on paper and in all the other ways. That really matter mar did win He took down. The cannibal. took down the political pig You know who's also cannibal. you know. He he stopped the prostitution killing and he got revenge for the woman who is claimed to love. He got revenge for goldie. And that's what mattered the most to him so his objective was complete and.

Look like. i always heard that william Basically demanded that they changed the design because he did not like the design of the the outfit. And that's what we ended with the with what we got like the helmet goblin range the governor range but originally like in this footage. Like you guys lawler this up afterwards but it was creepiest. We saw he can already break in. He broke into lucille's. So i mean who's to say. Go to the bathroom and you're place. Strew him do what he wants. But this trail of murdering gives him enough information to go to a pope and when he goes to this poll. He's he's a priest. Please go extent. Food italy yeah. Yeah this is actually. Yeah but no. He goes to a priest And he sits in the and the confessional and the ah they have this conversation and is is set up so that the previous thinking that okay. Yeah so this just another schmo you know confessing gord ever and then he realizes oh shit no this guy who for me and You know maher says the you know. He's not too bright and we need mation he typically goes to people who knows When he wants to know about he he got he got permission Murdering people was led him here and He then tells the priest alright. So tell me like who is that. You work for who was set this up and The priest is headed. Give information and then he eventually tells them. That is a man by the name of rock and that really kind of. That's the first moment they wear rec- marv kind of pause like have some sort of hesitation or maybe a slight disbelief and that. I think that right there tells us enough about what we need to know about the character of work that this must be a very powerful person to give more of this kind of response right point out. Frank miller plays the priest and the movie. I didn't even notice that frame miller. Wow i did not even notice that lasted so he blasted with with gladys is best little really worth dying for dying for with caring for worth going to hill for amen amen. I didn't even notice that was different. That's frank wow damn you know. It wasn't until until we covered in on live on the podcast that i noticed jim starling was in. That movie is like. "Leaflet to that actually Just like an interesting side note. Nothing to pertinent mass-appeal cells and that's the downside of it you know and that's unfortunately one of the underlying truth to all of our of movies and their productions offices that they are businesses and they want to make money off of you know the work of this artist and you know the the writings of such and such so. Unfortunately yeah i was just thinking about what you were saying there. And it's like that's actually really fair point you know that's artists and that's their world's their mind frame their creativity. Your bum nov. That at least had the courtesy to do it correctly right. Yeah yeah but we were talking earlier to that. Let's say he. And i go that same movie. Two three times and we're ten percent of the overall population is comic nerds. They're not gonna make that money but if they mass appeal that thing in hollywood is it if you will they're gonna get money from a whole lot more people that's what they're gonna do right. They're not going to respect the artist's work. I'm not saying they're disrespectful. But they're going to do what they want to do with it. If they bought the rights happens with most of our movies that we talk about you know how many books have you read that turned into a movie and it wasn't like the book aright comics tons. And you know. I won't say that that you know we've been attacked because like can you attack us you know then existed. That's been accosted because By basically saying you know how you guys being much of sticklers when we're getting a was what's the verbiage like directors creative point of view on something and that you know is one of those things where like i understand that like. I have the in my own mind. Move the goal post. Otherwise i want enjoy any of you know of what we get an in mainstream. Hollywood unfulfilled expectations do create immunity. And then you're always going to be an unhappy bitch going out every theater but also You know the. There's the over of saying that like something that everybody likes. Nobody's gonna love you know and and ultimately kind of hollywood goes for more or less you know they wanna make something that everybody's can come out and see me dan. Hopefully they love. But if they don't will you know they dislike it a mini meal. We make do right. That's that's that's what's most important to us as being you know hollywood executives not the homeys. Well that reminds me when when the word came out of this will be turned into a movie. Yeah to say. I was nervous like oh god this is gonna be beautiful in amazing or this is going to be. I'm going to walk out of the. Don't be so upset. You know luckily was first. Yeah does remind me and forgive me for being so freaking. add. But i gotta talk about it now. Groomer has it and please correct me. This is just click bait bullshit. Because i would love for it to be rumor has. It's a are recasting a jennifer lawrence to be a sue. Storm is rumored right now. Okay good. I didn't know how much credence was behind that. I'll just thinking about that. Oh what the hell. I saw that. Click bait as well. And i was like okay. Okay.

"Somehow daredevil. Still so proud of that little neighborhood. He is back Right is like if you had to walk around one of them which won't be the safest one which one of the most dangerous i still feel sin city would be the most dangerous in my opinion like even of golf on or a kitchen because i feel like if you go through gotham or heels kitchen. I at least you can mostly trust the cops to try to help you if you're in a in a bad situation and you might get robbed but you won't be dead. Let's not forget sin city doesn't have any super villains as true places do what it is true in sin city this literally. No one i feel that you can trust at least there's this super heroes to battle these super villains to hopefully notify to some degree but we're in the city like you only choice the company that you keep which is why goldie sought out. Marv that's where we got that hot. Damn that uh checks out a lack of heroes a lack of honest cops a lack of anyone you can trust is why she saw even attention for that. Well done man. that's the truth. I feel like you set me up. I don't know but that is a great point though. Yeah because when else was What was going to do. You can't go to the cops. The cops are working for work. They know robin wright. No frigging matt murdock. Even gale in the group a little prostitutes to kind of keep their area together. She didn't go to them as true. Yeah didn't even didn't go to two windy. Those there was no one shit Back to our main story here. So once. Marv is Being taken out back by these two hitman he promptly comments about the code that one of them is wearing and then he proceeds to disarm them and And kill one while he questions the other while asking them to take off his coat because he's bleeding all over the code once the codes By the way. "I did you about off mic. so i'll go ahead and tell the joke again here You know how every now and then amongst your group of friends you play the question game. Like was hooper power. Would you have superpower. would you have. I would submit to be a frank. Protagonist won the superpower's because mara was scary as fuck. He could take hits and bullets and cars like they were nothing and then get back up. Put a bunch more bandages on his face and keep moving and keep moving like damn man if you wanted. The prime example lays boys and girls of a tough. Some bitch mar from this story is. That's of which ends down the tone of the story. The way that everything was written frigging great dude. Yeah he's relentless that's for sure. Yeah yeah yeah. I think that's one of the most enduring things about the character in really when you think about the story and you put into context. The story came out nine hundred ninety two and this was after we had gotten a handful of stories both marvel and dc. They really show that maybe it is okay if comments a little bit dark and because there's an audience ford we even got some previous miller. Work that you know testify to that nature but with Sin cd here with marvin particular. Here we have a protagonist. Who isn't all good. He's got some character flaws He's got some personal demons that he's battling. And by the way spoiler alert there will be a full spoiler so this episode but on top of that unlike most comic characters. she doesn't have a happy ending. You can even argue that to a certain extent while more of gets wet he ultimately wants knowing the price she has to pay. You know he says that is worth it even those who put him in that position to an extent they they kind of the kind of you know get away. They're able to to cover up when mark was able to uncover right like by the end of the day. What changed yeah. People were dead. Who needed to die. But other than that like the those people's legacies who deserve to be tarnished. You know a lot of that was swept over And so really. We finish the story to to your early economist..

I don't want my kids to find it and like take out the comic book that comes with it with all the nudity and silence four. Hey dad what's this and like. This is going in a box so a box. That's easily accessible. If i feel like maybe fifty of feeling the style gic just toss it in again for one more spin around the world of sin city. You know. I didn't expect all three of us the box this did you think i was going to put it on the shelf. I mean d- again. I've changed my a lot of my ideas of what would go on. A shelf has changed the course of that. So yeah no giving my now. This can go on a box. And actually i literally might put this in a box again for the reasons that i've stated i will literally delete it off. My netflix. never had to look at it again. I want to say what they really quickly. I apologize i don. I wasn't trolling. I really wasn't strolling guys. I thought it would make for an interesting discussion because this is an extremely unique movie like. Yeah no one's ever seen anything like this before and yes probably never should see again but like it's it is a unique movie with a very beautiful visual style. I know you guys don't like violence. So i did choose this intentionally to just push you a little bit. I aside your comfort zone but my intention was not to troll you. I wasn't trying to guys or aether like that. It's not it's not really a bad movie is just not are kind of movie. I think what it and it is also a more like if you're really in the movies like this is the art of a movie is probably really impressive. The people like that like you want the land for example like that. It's such a movie movie that you can just go over piece by piece. Which would he some point and i. It's just like you know that's kind of how i felt this. When we something that was more of just like a spectacle and ride just want dumb action. Why superheroes killing you fighting. that's fair. yeah and again. This is yeah. This is artful violence. Artful artful camp. You know which way of saying it. So now i get. I just wanted to publicly apologize. If i ruined anyone's evening slash day slash trip to k. mart. I didn't want to somebody's day but he's under so that's all right. "Six five year old man stalking a strange yellow face kill. This is also when you see. Elijah woods character sitting there too yeah and the also a lot of parallels between marvin him now. I don't know if that was intentional. Again this is all coming from the book of the out the comic book but again you're he's saying things like no needs to go quiet now. Let's you know he's actually mentioned being nasty again. Like how are these these. Frank miller beets are repeated here. So there's kind of like a correlation between marv and and hannigan because they are both trying to rescue someone again. This kind of like extreme masculinity is happening Were saved the girl very similar. Motivations actually is different motivations but it's a c- kind of this book and this book and is now setting itself up. We have a very uncomfortable scene. Where we're where work is is within Jessica alba again. Just not you. Don't see anything. Thank god. that's the last thing you need to see what we actually going to see the last thing. We need to see the last thing we need to see. We're going to see where we need the end this movie. That's where i was when i was watching this part. I was just trying to finish this movie. And i was just doing a lot of shopping to your house and stuff i can imagine. Do you like walmart. And lowe's like you're tired of all parts off by the way. So i can see like with a shopping cart kind of looking at your phone. Just continue to as you're putting your house together. New wife's like what do you think about these curtains. I don't really think they go with the pain. But yeah i think they might the patterns and you're like looking watching my walking through gotta finish this movie. I'm like we're going to record our. I've got to get this over with security risk free. I'm like on my volume was not on for this right so nancy refuses to screen because he knows that's how that's what gets going. That's what gets them off as screaming part like that part after she can't she kind of gets rescue or she makes a comment. I guess he what he said was right. You can't get off. don't scream. i did like that like i. I like her even though she's in a very terrible situation. Kinda take charge and not be. That was cool like that. That that i did like. Yeah because bruce was tells her before not scream no matter matter. What don't scream. So then hogging approaches gets catches yellow face in the tummy with his with knife figure. Yeah i guess. They don't the the parallel lines of looking that. You can't even lift cannon guy like you did the beginning of the actually can't this time right. It's there then then Then finally we get the khuda. Which i'll let you michael describe this This is the worst part of the entire movie it's removes. His web is payroll exact parallel line. Where he says the beginning where works down he's like check out his weapon and knocks guy away and he says both of them and then the beginnings where he shoots the crowds this one. He grabs a fistful of junk in tears. It off yeah. It discusses during rubbery plastic looking like. It's clearly very very foresight. It's still super gross. Yeah it's it's it stretches like kathy and like snaps back like a balloon breaking so. This is the i've talked a bit about lines right. There's lines in life and in movies this. What crosses it this is. This is a line stepper. This is stepped over the line This is so unnecessary..

"And that's a lot of this movie to with hannigan as well are harrigan keeps saying the wrong with bruce willis as well as they they don't just want to kill somebody to want to embarrass them humiliate them and escalate them. And that's and that's the thing again. That's i think. A big theme of this is that emasculated masculinization. I should say that word of its not real that kind of with the crotch shots and the and the actually. I can see that being a thing in this movie because everybody needs thing that makes sense. Yeah because everything and everybody in this movie are evil. Evil people right. There's no real reason for everyone to be this evil they are. They're all these archetypes. Are these you know very one noted villainous characters just evil for the sake of it like this movie there's no exploration of its of its evil and violence is just celebrating it and and hand waving it and i think that's one of the bigger problems with this is is that no one takes any responsibility for this right like if you're going to be grossing violent again. The lighthouse is horribly violent. The ending scene in that movie is when most were some things. I've seen on film in years but it's also well earned. It's deserved it. Works for it. It's beautifully shot. I just gloriously shot. it's artfully done violent snug good. Now after after the show. I'll tell you guys near gonna say But don't want the show you can tell us yeah. I don't wanna spoil here because you should go see this movie though. See the lighthouse talking to us. Yeah they know. They've earned that they earned that ending of that movie. Instant city rodriguez would probably say well. That's just what's in the comic book and a free miller would say that's what's in my brain and no one's taking the time to really examine it and really see if they should his frame. Yeah probably yeah. No one knows and i was thinking about it. It's just this kind of celebration and glorification without any thought to to what they're actually celebrating glorifying as a piece of pope media. I think it's fine right but you can't take it more than that. Which is why stuff. Some of the stuff in this movie does come off unearned and just there to shock you and shock value and Definitely the scene with his limbs. That's shock value..

"Yeah it's just take your phone and just do that's fine. Don't worry about it it's fine. I'll fix them post office. Just system. weird ass shit. Everything of marvis strange like you like you have the part with the lucille and you have heat merged people in an alley which was kinda cool and when he goes. There's a saloon that keep popping up throughout the movie at least through mars part and then continues on. And you see jessica alba's character which she goes by the name. They call her by her character's name disbarred or just something else. I can't remember they do nancy okay. It didn't click to me that that's nancy. All grown up from the first did not click until wayne or the end of the movie. Men will get there. that's britney murphy right. i saw sars-like all. Yeah you had to you kind of have that moment. Yeah they ought about her. And then i remember yeah not not actress. I think about very often well. She was a pretty big star at that point to like she. She was She was an eight mile Which i think one of our bigger roles she had a bunch of a bunch of work sheet. Apparently that count. I've seen movie was. She passed away. I don't remember from what monja. Oh god at age of thirty two for my age right now. Brutal brutal that sets us on a lot of movies too. I'm looking at her all her movies and it was a lot before she passed away. She did she did a lot of work again. Everyone in this movie is most. Everyone is a pretty big star at this point. And we also be clive owen. Who plays dwight. We have no context on who this person is in britain. Murphy gives him a coy. Smile as she hands him a whiskey and he delivers one of my favorite lines in this movie where he explains. How marv is like he. Clearly he knows who marv is in the explains to the audience in narration has. Michael clearly has said camp explains how marv was born in the wrong century. Like he really should have been born with the vikings or with light the gladiator his and that explains a lot like someone. Who's almost addicted to the violence..

"We start off with work. We need him In the throes of passion with goldie made no sense to me. Well i mean it. Everything is dropped him without context right. So you bruce willis dies next thing we have. Is you know hanky-panky that they extraordinarily ugly ban in the extraordinarily a beautiful woman. And you're thinking okay. What's going going on here. Strange but again no context throws me in there turns up he wakes up the next morning. She is dead. He is baffled that this happened. Because no one's sneaks up on mickey rook as he is mickey rourke and decides that. He is going to avenge her even though he's only known her for one drunken night. It and i think you do see a brief shot of frodo in the background sneaking up in the house before he passes which elijah wood was movie probably Yeah this is. This is all stage setting for the for the you know. Basically his entire motivation for this entire film. No other motivation needed. That's it revenge comcast and kill goldie. Gotta find the guy killed goldie. That's it the only girl has ever been nice to him. Take a shot. Every time he says goldie seriously you do that. You know what. It'd be more comfortable way to finish this movie often watching out midway through a more enjoyable when you get to the later part being drunk off your ass when you're watching that you guys didn't enjoy this. I actually had. I had a decent time with it to be honest. I don't think. I loved it as much as i did. Back in two thousand and five is. I like to say in growth happened but i really still enjoy this for what it was kind of. Lean into it lemans go. Mike was the lowest. I'm in the middle and you're the highest. I'm pretty sure that's the way to put it might be. I think that's a super fair. Bet i can guess before episodes thank loans. I think that's no no risk there. There were there. Were parts that. I enjoy like everything with marv. Like when he's breaking out and he's fighting the cops and he stealing a car here was a cool thing where he jumps through the front window. Car feet i okay i was like okay this is kinda cool in the splashes of blood the only read on the screen and everything is black and white. I mean work. Who'll moments where i'm like. I was getting into the movie but is just like when the violence gets violent it gets so the top like n even with block and white and it's not and it's kind of cartoony in a in a in a in a sense it just there. Were a couple of things that really. I was just like nope on the checkout. Like you had after you read. They'll tell you what. I wrote down a sexy claire where i gotta say. This movie loved half naked. Women putting here for some reason. There's nothing about how there's there's nothing but which again i'm not complaining. It just didn't feel from the comic like that. That claire standing there with a gun just just in their underwear. That's straight from the comics. I've been flipping through the conquest..

"Tonight. Michael okay hughes and you can scream now if you want. A bill tucker. It's time to get nasty. I didn't even think of anything russell. Wow i was usually the most clever of all of us normally but this was not a movie. That movie hurt me and places. I'm bill i should say before is one we are. We are covering movie because we finish face to. It was time for build a comic book movie for us to to all watch. And why don't you know what you picked for us. I picked the twenty thousand and five plastic maybe that was classic sin city which is a agitation or as robert. Robert rodriguez puts a translation of the frank miller series of books again released in two thousand and five directed by robert rodriguez of a desperado fame and once upon a time in mexico and See spy kids. You know spy kids movies. Yep and a friend of quentin tarantino. So this is a very popey extremely faithful adaptation of the extremely dark violent and crude and crass and kind of amazing frank miller comic so i thought an interesting. You know. this isn't capes and flying people and superpowers. this is i a take on More of the darker side of i guess comic books and i don't know the books very well i don't know any comic books well but i figured it'd be an interesting conversation if nothing else. This is one. You don't need to know very well. I'm pretty sure. Because now. I have absolutely no interest in ever picking up this book in my life. The app collector's edition. Dvd which is sitting to my right. I was really into this back in two thousand and five. This was super my wheelhouse. So i do have the collector's edition. Dvd has actually the lamar of the entire marv book. It came with it. And it's it's almost shot for shot. I mean you could read this book and not see this movie as far as this. What's inside and i don't know if this was done specifically for this version or if this is the book actually is But rodriguez definitely wants to be as faithful as humanly possible to the source material. He really loves it and we will get into the way..

Las Vegas Mourns the Death of Two Giants

"I got to say it was weird being in Las Vegas the other day when two giants died while I was there. Sin city paid tribute to the legendary magician Tiger tamer the other night virtually every hotel on Las Vegas boulevard lit up its marquee. To bid him farewell, the park MGM, aria and the MGM were among some of the hotels that took part because 81 year old siegfried died and that happened just two days after announcing that he had cancer. And his death comes as you know 8 months after the passing of Roy. His partner, Roy, I siegfried didn't get mulled by a Tiger. Roy did. And siegfried just died at his home in Las Vegas from pancreatic cancer. That's a bad one. When you get it, it's more or less a death sentence coming at you quick. Cancer is a motherfucker. I can't stand it. I lost my sports editor to pancreatic cancer way back at newsday in the 80s. And to understand what was the picture of health, the funniest guy in the room, a great leader and one day he gets a diagnosis and I'm talking about two, three weeks later, he's gone. That's how fast pancreatic cancer can get you. So my thoughts and prayers are with anybody that suffering from that or anybody in your family who has that. Siegfried sister said he fell asleep gently and peacefully, thank God for good drugs. But between he and Sheldon adelson, Sheldon helped revolutionize Las Vegas, it was a very surreal feeling to be there in Vegas when both these giants passed on. Sheldon was the first guy to add restaurants and expensive boutiques the hotels and casinos. So whenever you're at seizes or any of these fancy hotel and casinos and you want to go buy a purse for your wife and $6000 purse because you did well at craps or roulette, that was his vision.
