"And this week's goldstar goes to look up ted lasso. Why because ted lasso. If no one's aware it's a television show. It's like a half hour usually it's on apple plus and somebody or apple apple. Tv apple plus. It's apple tv and they just wanna there were nominated for a whole bunch as it want a whole bunch of emmy's it's the feel good show of the year. That's what so great about it aaron. I started watching it recently. And it's just it just makes you feel good at it's like upbeat and positive. They were nominated for supporting actor in a comedy series. They were like they. They won supporting actress. Outstanding comedy series. Supporting actor lead actor supporting actress that supporting actress. So jason ducasse today To dyke's is the he plays lap ted lasso and he's a like a college. Football coach was hired to coach a premiere of soccer or football league in london or england. Somewhere i don't know if they're in london and why he's hired is revealed in the first season but he has such a positive like way about him that's disarms. Everyone expects coaches to be totally different. I'm he's more concerned about the person rather than even winning. Almost it's really good. I would highly recommended. I'm sure like like you said earlier. David it's just suddenly everywhere people were talking about like. Oh i guess. I got to get some apple. Tv and watch this. And i would recommend it full charge. In other words they won the it should officers too many platforms. Yeah it's exhausting is set to remember all your passwords. All right well. We felt like we needed a really positive gold star. Because is a little heavier of a topic misunderstood so just so you know we did our met gala podcast last time and simone biles was there and unfortunately we shot down her dress. But i think we can all agree that she's one of the world's greatest gymnasts that's ever lived. She's one twenty five world championship medal. seven olympic medals. So she's a pretty big deal and kind of broke the internet on and on in july when she said due to mental health reasons. She wasn't going to participate in the olympics anymore. U.S. Gymnasts Say FBI Failed to Protect Them From Sexual Abuse

"Four american gymnast. Simone biles michaela maroney aly rice. Men and maggie nichols sat in front of the senate yesterday. Engaged emotional testimony about the abuse. They suffered at the hands of former usa gymnastics doctor. Larry nassar and their feelings of betrayal by investigators particularly the fbi the fbi. Let them down big time. This is simone biles. I don't want another young gymnast. Olympic athlete or any individual to experience the horror that i and hundreds of others have endured before during and continuing to this day in the week of the larry nassar abuse. She said the scars of this horrific abuse continue and the impact will never be over michaela. Maroni told a story about sitting on her bedroom floor back in twenty fifteen and talking to the fbi over the phone and telling them all of the details of everything that had happened to her and then told the f. b. i. About tokyo the day he gave me a sleeping pill for the plane. Ride to then work on me. Later that night that evening i was naked completely alone with him on top of me molesting me for hours. I began crying at the memory over the phone. And there was just dead silence. I was so shocked at the agents silence and disregard for my trauma. After that minute of silence he asked is that all advocates for the young women. Say as many as one hundred twenty athletes may have been abused by nasser. they says l. erased men nassir found more than one hundred new victims to molest serving innocent children up to a pedophile on a silver platter. All we needed was one adult to do the right thing. I don't know if you guys saw this part of her testimony but she told a story about sitting with an fbi agent and him trying to convince her that everything that had happened. Wasn't that bad.

Simone Biles: 'I Blame the System That Enabled Larry Nassar's Abuse'

"Before we begin our next segment. We note that we will be discussing sexual abuse the testimony. On capitol hill yesterday was both angry and anguished for usa gymnastics athletes said law enforcement including the fbi ignored them and lied about them when they said they were abused by former team. Doctor and convicted sex offender. Larry nassar simone. Biles was one of the women who testified to be clear. I blame larry nassar and i also blame an entire system that enabled perpetrated his joining us. Now is marissa witkowski hausky. She's an investigative journalist for usa today. Who began covering the abuse scandal years ago at the indianapolis star. It's been six years since usa gymnastics heard the first allegations. And it's been five years since you and other journalists at the indianapolis star began reporting on this listening to yesterday's testimonies. What stood out to you. What lawmakers heard yesterday was the continued frustration of survivors. Who felt that their allegations against larry nassar had not been taken seriously enough. They had been calling for change in calling for accountability for the failures of usa gymnastics of the us olympic and paralympic committee and of the fbi former olympic gymnast michaela maroney in her testimony directly. Blame the fbi for not acting fast enough to stop by larry nassar. Here's her testimony. What is the point of reporting abuse if our own. Fbi agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in a drawer.

"Our listeners. There will be descriptions of sexual assault here so if you need to skip ahead. Now's the time but with that. Let's go to christine brennan sports columnists with usa today. Abc news contributor. And she's actually been covering the story since it broke which is years now right christina. What stuck out to you about this testimony yesterday brad. The power is in the platform. A lot of what was said by. Simone biles and allie race men michaela maroney and mcnichols. A lot of it has been in reports or has been printed in newspaper stories and online it. Some of it was new but a lot of it wasn't. I've had to be taken in an ambulance. Because i pass out and i'm so sick from just the trauma and it might not even be after a hearing like this it just hits me out of the blue to have us be reminded of the horrors of larry nassar to see these incredible women especially simone biles. Everyone just watched her six weeks ago in tokyo and all that she went through there i worked incredibly hard to make sure that my presence could maintain a connection between the failures and the competition at tokyo twenty twenty that has proven to be exceptionally difficult burden for me to carry. It is a reminder That that this denver goes away. Never goes away for them and though it in that means it shouldn't ever go away for us and they're survivors of larry. Nassar have a right to know why they're wellbeing was placed in jeopardy by these individuals. Who chose not to do their jobs to date. No one from the fbi. The us opec or usa. Arizona Becomes First State to Sue Biden Administration Over Vaccine Mandates

"Is now the first state to sue the biden administration over cove nineteen vaccine mandates. Remember as part of a larger plan to fight the pandemic and the delta variants the white house announced a new mandate coming soon. It says all companies with one hundred or more employees must require workers either be vaccinated or get weekly kovic testing businesses. That don't could face thousands of dollars in fines. Well arizona's attorney general calls that unconstitutional and filed the lawsuit. He argues the plan discriminates against us citizens since undocumented migrants detained at the border are not required to get vaccinated other republicans have also questioned. The legality of such a massive medical mandate for now at least president biden is not backing down. He met with top execs. From companies like microsoft disney and walgreens. It was an effort to highlight companies. Who have already required employees get vaccinated and some were workers. Get the shots because of it

Reflecting on the Tokyo Games

"Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo didn't happen without serious controversy, many questioning whether the games should have gone on at all. Given Japan's low vaccination rate, and the numbers of people who have been infected with coronavirus, ABC is Kenneth Martin is covered pretty much every corner of the Olympics while in Tokyo. And he offered his thoughts on Friday, just as the games were beginning to wrap up, Ken, you were there for a lot of the most dramatic moments of these Olympics. What's your take this year? What a year? I mean the masks the pandemic. Simone Biles, give us a rundown sherry. It's something that we've never seen before. A delayed plagued Olympics and I actually said, expect the unexpected when it came to these Olympics because We didn't know when we landed here in Tokyo. What was going to happen? We knew when it came to Covid protocols. They were pretty strict. I couldn't go out into public spaces. I couldn't walk on the sidewalks. I couldn't eat in restaurants, which is really tough for me. You know me Sherry. So when it came to what we saw here, I don't think I'll ever experience anything like it again. What were the most exciting moments do you think of of these delayed Olympics? Simone Biles was the biggest story of these Olympics, I think, and that's because all eyes were on this young woman who we had such high expectations. And she came in here and we were expecting so much. And then she said, No, I'm having an issue. I'm going to work on myself. I don't care if billions of people are watching me. My mental health comes first. And then, when she was ready, she decided to get back on the horse or balance beam. She delivered a solid routine and walked away with an Olympic medal. And what we saw is other athletes talking about mental health. So during the press conferences after a lot of these athletes competed. The American ones were asked about Simone Biles asked about mental health and they really opened up. They had honest conversations, and for many

"The struggle is real right now. Trying to stay in a game and implement the strategies that felicia is giving you to get promoted while also try to die from the stress that we are often subjected to because of discrimination in a workplace that stress is a ravishing our bodies and yet because we have a corporate warriors that we are the you are especially as black women. You keep checking keep going you keep fighting so i'm here to help. You equip yourselves to fight smarter not necessarily harder. You see the problem at least the problem that we think is the problem is us when drama pops off in a workplace are very first stop is to wonder what we did wrong how we could have done. Xyz better. but like a prophetess naomi. osaka in apostle simone biles. You're not going to stress us out. And more and more we as black women are getting to that point where we are no longer going to accept simply being beat up in a workplace even as we are climbing the so called Ladder which you know. What a corporate lavender. Even the corporation itself is actually not a problem. The real problem is emotions emotions on both sides. You see. Discrimination is an emotional transaction because discrimination is an extreme dislike or hatred for a group or type of people as emotional as a motion

"And yet that exit helped her team to win silver medals. I am in awe of simone biles. She drove a we. Narrative focused on her team when the world expected spectacular results from me narrative in doing so. I believe that simone biles became a future of work icon. And here's why. I saw mon. Byles recognized her own humanity unlike so many past elite olympic competitors. She recognized that her mind and body were not working together and publicly. She declared that she would focus instead on personal wellness. The past of work was done by people who disrespected their own humanity. Who worked perhaps sixty hours or more per week. Living as if work was their entire day pass practices rendered such workers burned out or rusted out rendering them ineffective and their jobs and also in their non work lives second. She showed great leadership and adhered tightly to the mission. Great leaders don't need to hog the spotlight. We know that leaders of the past measured their success in personal terms but biles demonstrated that the future and the future of work is comparatively selfless. True leaders are about team and mission success and third bile showed us the power of the new personal brand. No longer is the value focused on winning on the contrary in the future of work. Our personal brands are about doing profound work. That makes the world a better place. Alongside elite athletes like naomi asaka and michael phelps. Simone biles became a leading voice for mental health and wellness but also future work. Work is part of a day doing other things and the day should be positive and joyful. Simone biles showed us all that to be. The greatest at something is not what matters in a world in crisis what does matter is leadership of focus on mission and the success of the team. Simone biles is indeed a future of work icon and when we follow her bright and shining example our best days

Discussion Simone Biles Mental Health Challenges After Winning Bronze on Beam

"So i just wanna start with a very basic question to both of you. Simone biles yes has won the bronze-medal in the balance beam which is actually an even greater triumph for her. Now considering how the past week had gone for her but professor carter friend zeke. When biles. I made that announcement of withdrawing from the team competition. I just was wondering what was your first reaction. How did you feel about that. What did you think was going on. My initial reaction was of concern. And while i don't know byles you know hearing that For any athlete they withdrew Were removed from lineup. Or remove themselves made me think that she had perhaps encourage some sort of physical injury in the qualifying rounds or because of the pandemic perhaps contracted cobra as we've seen many of some of our athletes not only from the us but other countries succumb to that Then when she continued to share that she would not be competing in those events she qualified for and that it was not due to anything. Physical in real concern began to overcome me and initial thoughts of mental health issues to pass sixteen months with those respective sort of restrictive parameters The combination of postponement of the olympic games wondering what it must mean to be in the spotlight to as i reviewed all her sponsorship ads but as well reflecting on what she may be navigating in the aftermath of the sexual abuse case that she was part of so things became of greater concern and really just just hoping and wishing her well through that process over the next few days

"You know. Going into this olympics. Simone was different. You can tell that something. Something was off. She was giving fewer interviews and during the interview. She did give after the events leading up to the games. They're very short. Maybe ten minutes on zoom. It was totally unlike her. I did manage to talk to her about a week before she left for tokyo and it was unlike any other conversation i've had with her. What did she say. I asked her looking back on your career. You know what is the happiest moment just trying to trying to warm her up for the interview and and she gave me a quite a surprising answer she said honestly was during my time off. She said you know my ankles really hurt hurts to walk. I'm tired i'm old. The sport has taken a toll on my body. I really want to find out who i am. And so is like the tokyo olympics could not get here quick enough not only to start but for them to end so that's how she was feeling before the games start. Walk me through. What happens when she starts to perform well. Everyone is looking for simone to do what she's done in the past. So here we go. Simone biles getting ready on floor exercise first routine of the tokyo olympics and she does too moves on the very first day of competition. No one else in the world has ever done it. She had shocking floor exercise where she flew right off the competition carpet and slid down the raised part. Step off the floor with both feet. That's a three tenth deduction but then on the balance beam. She also stumbled out of the landing steps backward and then was making all sorts of faces and of pulling at the front of her leotard. It just looked like the simone was totally distracted by something and it didn't look good but everyone was saying that by the time the real finals came around that the simone biles that we all know would return that she would be the same great gymnasts that we've been seeing for over a decade the greatest of all time. But there's no question. No female gymnast in history has ever taken this event on like simone biles now. I don't so on the team final day. Which is her first chance in the. Us teams. i chance to win a medal. Simone biles goes on her first event. Which is the vault. It doesn't matter what she does. It's it's a show stopper and it's must see tv. She's supposed to do flip with two twists off the vault which is difficult vaults but other gymnasts jewett so to simone biles. It should be super easy. She starts to do it. She pulls out of it mid air. Wow ends up doing a one and a half and nearly crashing to the ground. She catches herself steps. A couple of steps forward very uncharacteristic vault for simone but if look like she got almost lost in the air in the arena. We don't know what is going on. Because this is not what simone biles is supposed to do. The beauty of simone biles as gymnast and her natural ability mid perhaps her greatest natural ability in the sport is to know exactly where her body is in space. And that's if that's something that she she was good at when she was six and suddenly simone biles at twenty. Four is at the olympic games in mid air. She has no idea where the ground is. And nobody knows why as it turned out. It's actually a phenomenon in gymnastics called the twisties and gymnast and also divers liken it to sort of a disconnect between the brain and the body where the brain wants to do something and the body just completely forgot how to do it completely has never has never twisted or flipped before i saw one tweet that had actually a very good description of it. It's sort of like driving on the highway and you're trying to do a tricky merge onto a busy street and you completely forgot how to drive a car near brains trying to make you do it but your hands and your feet don't know what to do and for simone byles she's in mid air and can't figure out how many twists she has left. Where's the ground at my twisting fast enough and as soon as you start over. Thinking in a sport like gymnastics which has no pretty much no margin for error. It could be disastrous so juliet. What happens after she falls short. In that volt event simone walks off the mad after her vault consults with the team doctor and her coach and walks out of the arena. Completely few minutes later she comes back out. She has her grips on your hands for the uneven bars. She's talking to her teammates and suddenly everybody starting to cry later. We find out that. That's the moment that snowmobile said can't do this. I'm done. i've been all the time if you guys can do this. I don't want to jeopardize a medal for you. You guys take it from here. And how unusual is that coaches have. I've talked to many coaches about this. They haven't seen this decades in the sport. And i can say that i in my eleven olympics. I have never seen any athlete. Who's going to be winning the gold. Who is so much farther ahead of all of her. Other competitors like simone biles is say you know what it's not my day today. I'm going to step back. And what does she say about why she stepping down. She said that she just wasn't in the right head space to continue and that she feared for her physical health because of it she said gymnastics is such a hard sport such a mental sport that you need to be one hundred percent focused to not hurt yourself and simone biles is doing these these signature skills that nobody else can do. That are so very dangerous that if you are not focused one hundred percent. There's a chance of severe injury so she decided to take care of herself and let her teammates takeover. You know until now. The story of simone biles has been really the story of triumph right. Someone who embodies. What olympic athletes do in the face of these really incredible hardships which is just power through it with striking about this moment to me is that she saying for the first time. I'm not going to power through it. Yeah in the past. She has power through it. Even when she was struggling in two thousand eighteen she had a ended up going to the emergency room in doha the night before team qualifying at world championships because she had kidney stones. The check yourself out that night so the next day she can go and qualify her team and herself for the finals. In the face of larry nassar she decided to stay with the sport. Stay on usa gymnastics. But she's doing something that nobody ever would expect of an american gymnasts which is really on the biggest stage at the most crucial moment for her and her teammates decide that her mental health was worth more than the olympic gold medal that she had dreamed of as a kid so i think that she's.

I'm still a tan. And i'm one of the producers of the daily one of the most memorable episodes. I've worked on was about a single mom named yolanda who i got to know over a few months during the pandemic when she was potentially going to be evicted from her home during one of our calls. She told me that her older son had actually decided to leave college in order to work and help her pay the rent listening to yolanda in that moment really crystallized for me how an eviction notice yes it means the threat of being forced from your home but it can also mean an impact on the next generation on the daily. We tell personal stories in part to help all of us better understand how current events shape real people's lives are team is able to put in this kind of time and commitment to a single story thanks to subscribers of the new york times. Where things going for simone heading into the twenty twenty one olympics in the year before the olympics in tokyo simone biles has to deal with all of these expectations that only have an extra year to grow because of the pandemic so not only is. She expected to win gold medals in tokyo. But she's expected to win the olympic all around. And if she does she becomes the first gymnast in fifty three years to repeat as olympic. All around champion. But by the time simone gets to the olympic trials in june. It looks like things are starting to crack. Simone myers. She takes to the balance. Beam this helmet rate here wolf turn. Nobody's faster than her on the just complete control and reskill. She looks like she's doing a pretty good routine. Merced has tier three elements in a row. A champion right there but on one end of the balance beam. They can't see that because they're judge. She loses her ballots. Struggles to stay on the beam and ends up falling off of it is shocking shopping for sure. But she's almost in tears but she gets back on. "Striking vista of copacabana beach on a friday evening in rio de janeiro brazil and then when she gets to the thousand sixteen olympics in rio her first olympic games. Simone biles goes in and does exactly what simone biles was expected to do. If she can do this she will become america's first olympic gold medalist on this event vaults. That's more than twenty feet high in the air. All my goodness fifteen point nine zero for simone biles hit every move on the balance beam and on the floor. Exercise ninety seconds away from a dream coming true. She did exactly what everybody had been waiting for. Which was this move that nobody else can do. It's to flips in the air. And then she just adds a at the end. Which makes it something that nobody has done before. And totally unique to simone biles and she nails it. Burn her destiny all along. I just remember the. Nbc announcers gushing about her. She is not one of the grades. She is the greatest and she just looked like she was just so full of joy. You know because it was done. She did the but weeks. After the olympics news came out that would shake the sport forever that would really change the whole olympic landscape forever. A former usa gymnastics doctor. Who's facing several counts of child. Sex abuse is expected to be in court. police arrested. Dr larry nassar larry nassar. The longtime national team. Doctor was arrested. The women alleged that the doctor inappropriately touched them and other teammates between nineteen ninety four and two thousand and later he was found to molest hundreds of girls and women under the guise of medical treatment. Gymnast i remember that zhao service foster and i'm wondering right now. Where was simone in that. How did she fit into that. Simone learned about the larry nassar news when we all did so. It's very hard because for the longest time my parents would ask case mon like they would never push me to talk about it but my automatic response was no it would would be angry and i didn't wanna talk about it because like no kind of happens to me like there's just no way at eventually. Simone was in the car driving and suddenly it hit her that she had been molested. Also but once. You realized you know it happened to you. It's very saddening. Am i remember just like blowing. Is she called her mom crying uncontrollably and they realized that she was among the many people who had been hurt by nasser and not only was a victim of larry nassar but also a victim of usa gymnastics the us olympic and paralympic committee all the other entities that were enabling larry nassar that had enabled larry nassar to hurt to so many girls and women and simone felt betrayed by that so she was dealing with this double trauma. I don't know it's hard to talk about. It's really hard to talk about. I just feel like. I don't know i don't need to cry. But it's just it's hard coming here for an organization and having failed so many times and we we had one goal and we've done everything that they asked us for even when we didn't want to and they couldn't do one damn job you had one job you literally have one job and you didn't protect us and it's just really sad because now and this is when simone started to think about all these issues and really feel that nobody really care for her as a person. They just wanted her to win. Medals to be gymnast. They didn't care for her as a human. It's just hard and we try to work through it but it will take some time. I'm strong. I'll get through it but it's hard juliet. There's something that i was noticing going back. And looking at the coverage from the time everybody around her and really even her seemed to assume that she was just going to get through it. It's like people were seeing her. Is this kind of superhero. Like this was just not going to touch her. I think that simone felt that sure she she could get through any of this. Because she's simone biles. She's the greatest gymnast in the world. You know while the sport is going through this incredible turmoil and really the whole olympic movement was going through this incredible turmoil of. How did we let the serial molester have access to our national team athletes. She did go started to go to therapy. She did fall into a deep depression over. It was napping all the time she really struggled with it but yet she was back in the gym she was back at the top of the sport was like somebody snapped a finger. There was some own again winning everything and she really wants to make it to the twenty twenty olympics and can't wait for the day where she can hang up her leotard. Not because she doesn't like the sport anymore but.

"July thirtieth juliette. What time is it for you right now. What time is it here in tokyo. Have no idea what day is it. I think it's thursday at eleven o'clock. Am kind of lost track. This is the life of a new york times reporter covering the olympics. Yeah some people have morning events but Gymnastics is mostly in the evening so like tonight. I'll get there at eight o'clock and i'll stay till one o'clock in the morning. Come back to my hotel and continue writing until about five. Yeah that's late so gymnastics. This is sport. You've been covering for a very long time. And simone biles is someone. You've been covering for a very long time. So i'm wondering if you can help us understand how we got to this moment. Where does simone story began. Her story began in columbus ohio when she was born to a woman named shannon shannon byles. A single mom who had four kids unfortunately had a lot of addiction problems and during my many interviews with her over many years. She's talked a little bit about her backstory simone recalls being at home not having much food or not being fed at all. She looks back sort of with disdain. That the cat was fed while the children weren't at about two years old simone and her brothers and sisters were sent to foster care and they're then it became even rockier for that moving from house to house until her grandparents adopted her and they moved to a affluent suburb of houston where the next turn of her life happened when she went to a gymnastics center for daycare trip for daycare trip so when she was a really little kid is the same year she was adopted so is about when she was about six she went to this daycare trip to bannon's gymnastics and right away the coaches noticed how she was able to understand how her body moved when she came in and did a flip and a half twist their mouths dropped open they said oh my god how does she do this because kids have to i do it into a foam pit or do it with somebody spotting you she was just able to do things in the air without thinking but yet with still knowing where her body is in relation to the ground in gymnastics that's called air awareness so they knew they had someone special right away and she moved up very very quickly in gymnastics ranks from level to level and julia when does she emerge on the national stage of someone to watch she emerged pretty quickly why from the excel center in hartford connecticut. This is the gymnastics championships. She basically showed up when she was sixteen years old. You have one of those new faces. It's a breakout year for her. Small files at the national championships. She gets through this year and it is a tremendous start for simone biles and she goes into wins. The whole thing wins the whole all around. She was just so dominant. She's a scar in the making right there. From nationals. the top women in the on the united states national team move over to the world championships. Which all the best teams in the world compete at and simone biles goes from winning the national championships going to the world championships and also winning everything. Another solar go performance abroad. Happy smile from soda balls cheer emerged triumphant. I would love to have been in those conversations with other teams like russia and china saying who is this girl simone biles. She showed up out of nowhere and this is not going to be good for us in the next olympics. We.

"Was paralyzed during her floor. Routine the international gymnastics federation has made some safety changes since then. The vaulting table is now different. And there's a u. Shape matt around the springboard and the move that left mukhin paralyzed since been banned still knowing stories. Like these lewis says. That biles was well aware of how dangerous it could be for her to continue competing while suffering from the twisties. Did byles say anything about or have you learned from talking to people close to her since about why this bout of the twisties or where this mental state may have come from what may have contributed to it. We've heard from gymnast. The twisties can come for a number of reasons. It is hard to overstate the extent to which simone biles had stress upon stress upon stress piled onto her coming into these olympics and she was pushing through and she was doing what she thought. Everybody wanted her to do and what she wanted to do. Until the moment she realized she was risking her neck by continuing to do it and that was more important to her to acknowledge than continuing to do what everybody wanted from her says. That biles decision to pull out could raise larger questions about the culture of gymnastics and the pressure on athletes to perform no matter what simone biles said frequently with different meanings at times. We're not just athletes where people to so. There's clearly an awareness. We've heard michael phelps speak out in support of the gymnasts in the last few days we've seen various athletes wanting to talk about the impact short-term and long-term that high performance has on their wellbeing and their later happiness in life the impact that a gold medal does or doesn't have that so in two thousand thirteen byles had to be pulled out of a competition and now in twenty twenty one. She's pulling herself out. What do you think the significance of that is. It's clear that simone biles sees the significance that four or five years ago. She would not have done what she did. A hallmark of the abuse scandal was the gymnasts did not feel like they could say no to anything. The whatever they were told by team staff or by coaches or by the national team physician must be right and what we saw when simone biles talk show her team staff with she was saying here. That you're encouraging me that i look okay. I'm telling you that. I'm not okay to compete. We wrote in a magazine. Profile about simone biles a month ago that the world wants everything from her and she keeps on giving it and what is striking to me. Is it in tokyo. She said i'm not going to give you what you want at the cost of my own life potentially. How do you think this will affect simone. Biles as legacy. It is very clear that this extraordinary moment in an extraordinary career will form part of that legacy and saying no to something seemed risky in a gymnasts assessment. When that gymnast has done the riskiest. Things imaginable We'll also form part of that. Greatest of all time moniker. It is absolutely unprecedented. Because everything with simone. Biles is unprecedented. That gymnast of her caliber at her level. At a competition of this magnitude would take decision at such a pivotal moment and it shows to some gymnasts in extraordinary strength and maybe even a tiny shift in the balance.

"You mentioned that cheese. The last larry nassar abuse survivor this olympic team. And i wanna come back to that in just a few minutes. But i wanna talk a little bit more about this decision because beyond it being decision to look out for her own mental health and protected. She's also framed this decision as one about her own safety and the well being of her team. I didn't wanna do something silly out there and get injured so i thought it was best if these girls took over ended the rest of the job which they absolutely did their olympic silver medallist now and they should be really proud of themselves. Can you explain to us a little bit. Yeah absolutely so that Vault that she walked out of n. What that means is that she got lost in the air. If you go back and watch the video you can see at one point. She's lost sight of her ground. She's lost sight of you know where she's supposed to be in her movement and the fact that she lands on her fee is just because she's simone biles like she's that good but she short she cut the amount of rotation shoes supposed to do in half right and that feeling of bulking What what Gymnasts called the twisties rate. Is it's disorienting. The way you twist and flip through the air And part of your training is to do things so many times that you can do it and you have a sense of where you are and you just know you're going to run to the vault you're gonna throw your vote and you're going to land but it's dangerous especially in the sports like gymnastics because if you get lost of where you are in the air and you're unsure about your landing. There's a high probability you're going to get hurt and in fact. Many gymnasts are sharing stories today and threads on twitter stories. Instagram videos about their own experiences with this moment became maroney took to instagram. To share about having this happened to her mid air on the beam in coming down straight on her head. We know that this is something that has paralyzed people. It's very dangerous. And when she's talking about the team which is also citing is that volt was eleven point something something which is not a score. I don't even know the last time that she would have ever seen a number of that low for her on that so part of our decision when she talks about what it means for the team. This is the team competition right. This is not just the all around. This is not her scores alone but a very real feeling of. It's not just that. I don't trust myself but i also don't trust myself to contribute. In the way that i would need to to help my team i would actually be a detriment to them like I think the girls need to do the rest of the competition without me and there were like i promise you. You're finally watched you warm up and i said no so. They were like okay. Well if simone says this and we need to take a pretty serious and so i had the correct people around me to do that through trying to maybe explain to someone who's not really familiar with her or doesn't really understand her or what she's capable of. How would you explain. simone biles. yeah. I mean she's just it's it's it's kind of amazing to watch her into be in in a moment where we are getting to see and we have been able to see her performances the way that she's been able to innovate the sport who the height. She's able to get off of her volts. I mean there's there's such a beauty and power behind her performances and yet you know. She has absolutely pushed routines to places that we haven't seen from gymnasts files landing and astounding triple double during.

"Hi could be here. Welcome to front burner. I want to start by asking you. What was your reaction when you heard that. Simone biles is going to be withdrawing from the competition this week. I wanted to give her a hug. You know she's very very hard on herself in. You saw her even even reduced to tears for performance that was under her standards for herself. Leap there something just not right there. You can see it on her face and so my first reaction when she walked out of during her vault was. Oh no things like. That's dangerous right. It's it's actually quite a testament to her ability that she still landed on her feet and then just Feeling like i hope she takes in does whatever she needs for herself. I mean of course. I'm crying 'cause olympics. Just makes me cry so you know and like happy tears to watch watch teammates step up and so it was just a kind of very emotional but proud of her for doing that. In in space. That is very hard to make that call But set the scene a bit in terms of the approach to the day that she made the call to withdraw. What do we know. What do we know about what byles was going through. Leading up to that decision were there any signs that she was maybe potentially not up for it. Yeah she's been very forthright leading up to the games about the physical toll that it takes to continue to condition in compete at this level and the mental focus and and dexterity that it requires to continue to do this so monday tuesday wednesday friday trained seven hours a day. Thursday and saturday trained four hours and then sunday we get off plus being simone biles. Plus having the feeling like she's Has the world the way to the world especially with the country on her shoulders and all of these expectations and That she's competing against yourself right in in that is in her expectations for herself and she's very recently said like she has tried very hard to compete for herself but she still feels like she's doing it for others in a way that makes it even that much more of a burden to to do what she's doing. I've always kind of tried to compete against myself and beat myself and be better than the last time I competed and i know it's getting tougher. But i'm just trying to do that. Still in the other things that she's been very vocal about is how compelled. She was to return for these games. Let's be clear gymnastics. It's very hard right to sustain across multiple olympics because of the toll does take on your body and you know simone is is twenty four. She's not old but in gymnastics age. Right that is the elder of the team. And you know. She is very vocal about one of the things that was pushing her to return for these games was that she was the last competing nassar survivor. And then if we think about all of that and we add in the pandemic and we add in what a postponement for a year does to athletes. Who have a four schedule. Who have a very clear lead up to these world. Competitions two trials to the games postponing it for a year is really disruptive to that you have to continue to. Kit dishing.

"After her surprising trouble on the vault simone biles briefly disappeared from the competition floor. I want you got back. She pulled on her sweats and said she was there to be her teammates biggest cheerleader. She just wasn't going to compete eventually. She told reporters her head wasn't in the games and she was worried about her safety. The americans managed to win silver medals anyway. Russia took the gold. Some people may look at what just happened and say will the us gymnastics team. Did get us over. That's pretty good. That is pretty good. Those people are correct but still shocking. Yes because they were heavily heavily favored to win the gold. However there wasn't that much international competition or really asia's speak of in the last year and a half and so we didn't really like you know we saw what the russians could do it their own domestic competitions and they were looking good but we didn't really know what they were capable of on the international stage until they showed up here. Did you watch the presser. After after they won the silver medal..

"So let's just put simone biles in context like here's something i think about a lot. How many gymnastics moves are named after her to be determined because she may compete a new one if she decides to compete again at these olympics. She has won the more. You're like so. Don't pretend like this is a finished list. So currently there's one vault to floor skills and one bounce fame skill so currently for potentially five in the next couple of days depending on what she decides. She's capable of doing that. Seems like a lot. Like how does it compare to all the other gymnasts competing against most gymnasts have zero. So i would say favorably so going into the twenty twenty one games. The hype was pretty real for her and the team like i was watching an interview. She did on the today show and you could see how simone herself was psyching herself up but then the the host was too. I mean we're driven..

And i'm sitting here in the pitch dark in my bedroom washing tv alone. And i'm just like come on. You got this. You got this. It doesn't matter what fault she does. It's it's a show stopper and it's must see tv. I'm a journalist. But i also care about this person that i've been following so closely for the last five or six years you know. I wanted her to feel better and do well. And so when she when the vault went wrong. I just i could. Yeah i couldn't even believe it. And how very uncharacteristic vault for simone but it looked like she got almost lost in the air. But i knew also that however much ahead simone is is however much. The team usually wins by. And so i knew that without a pl- fifteen so she carries the team a little bit..

When i spoke to smiles recently she made clear that from her perspective continuing to compete and put herself out. There meant that a spotlight would remain on the scandal that it couldn't be swept under the rug. And perhaps that this part of that some of the answers that she and the other gymnasts still want want so wrong might eventually come to this olympics. Simone biles won't just be usa gymnastics best.
