"He's like this is definitely jesus. She jumps out the boat. He swims to shore. So here's what you need to know before we enter into this. If you don't know if you're not familiar with the story i want to keep in mind. Peter has betrayed. Jesus the last interaction he had with jesus when jesus was alive before. His crucifixion is jesus at his arrest and at his trial. Beaten mocked scourged. Peter standing somewhat nearby. Close enough that. Jesus can see him. And and jesus actually. Here's peter denied. Knowing jesus does denies being a disciple and that's the last interaction they have like face to face before this moment in scripture. Think about what that feel like. Just enter into story so peter noses jesus he swims to shore and jesus and peter are going to have this conversation case or we're going to pick it up here. I fifteen. When they had finished eating. Jesus said to simon peter simon son of john. Do you love me more than these. Yes lord he said. You know that i love you. Jesus said feed my lambs again. Jesus said simon son of john. Do you love me. He answered yes. Lord you know that. I love you. Jesus said take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him. Simon son of john. Do you love me. Peter was hurt. Because jesus asked him the third time. Do you love me. He said lord you know all things you know that i love you side note. Do you know how many times peter denied jesus three. Do you know how many times jesus is asking to be restored restoring relationship three times and then jesus said feed my sheep very truly. I tell you when you were younger. You dressed yourself and went where you wanted. But when you're old you will stretch out your hands and someone else will dress you and lead you to where you do not want to go. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which peter would glorify god then. He said to him follow me. Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom jesus loved was following men. This is the one who had leaned back against jesus at the supper in its end lord. Who's going to portray you. When peter saw him he asked lord what about him. Jesus answered if. I want him to remain alive until i return. What is that to you. You must follow me.

"Cooking over a charcoal fire and some bread. Bring some of the fish. You've just caught. Jesus said so. Simon peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were one hundred and fifty three large fish and yet the net hadn't torn now come and have some breakfast. Jesus said none of the disciples dared to ask him. Who are you because they knew it was the lord and then jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time. Jesus had appeared to the disciples since he had been raised from the dead after breakfast. Jesus asked simon. Peter simon son of john. Do you love me more than these. Yes lord peter replied you know i love you then feed my lambs. Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question. Simon son of john. Do you love me. Yes laura peterson you know i love you. Then take care of my sheep. Jesus said and a third time. He asked him simon son of john. Do you love me. Peter was hurt that jesus asked the question at third time. He said lord. You know everything you know that i love you and jesus said then feed my sheep tough times will come in your life but remember god is with you. He has a plan for you. He's called you to thank god for the trials and thank god for the tough times. It's hard to do in the moment but know that it's in those moments that when you're hurt you can let jesus make you breakfast and restore you. When peter jumped into that water. He came out of water onto shore and he found that jesus had breakfast waiting for them. They had been working all night fishing. They just needed to be restored and symbolically had been through a whole bunch. After the crucifixion. They were scared they were had been scattered. And especially peter. He had to find out that he was who the lord had declared him to be one. Who would deny jesus three times lay just later after he had swore that he would die for.

"It's one thing to fail somebody but then to make eye contact. What was that. Stare like to to be able to look in the eyes of jesus who you just denied. Then peter remember the word. The lord had spoken am before the rooster crows. Today you will deny me. Disown me three times. Any went outside any wept bitterly. Wow peter was right where many of us have been so many times i blew it. I said i would always and i didn't. I said i would never and i did. I blew it one too many times. And then it's like when we're at that place it's like the devil moves in like a shark smelling blood in the water just like just moves in for the kill. Like i've got you right where i want you. And that's when we start hearing these voices you're pathetic. You're so messed up. You are so worthless. God will never be able to use somebody like you after what you said after what you did after even what you thought or where you went you are never going to be able to be used by god in the moment. That voice locks itself. End your life. Your identity has now been distorted because when you start seeing yourself not a somebody that has failed but you start seeing yourself as a failure. You cannot embrace the ways. The god wants to use you in the future because that is the whole point if he can get you locked in to all of the ways that you've messed in your past you have no hope for your future. You can't see that. There is any future whatsoever of god using you to make a difference let alone somebody else's life but you're all life but here's the crazy part is jesus knew that peter was stuck in some shame that he needed to be rescued from and i believe that god gave me this. Talk today to help. Rescue some of you. That are stuck in some shame. That has creeped up in your life in trying to rip you off from the identity that got once you living in. And so jesus. Has this moment with peter after he resurrects from the dead now as we read the gospel of john. Chapter twenty one. I got to give you the back story here. Because jesus has already made it appearance to peter. Peter's already seen the resurrected jesus and think that by itself would completely transformed peter's life but says here in john that even after he had witnessed the resurrection that peter went back to doing what he did before he he was so locked in to the shame of the things that he's done he could not see himself being anybody else from the person that he had already been his life. He went backwards so he told the guys. We're going to go fishing. Because that's what. I know how to do to goes out fishing. Catches no fish and some strangers on the shore yells over an. Hey throw your out on the other side of the bout peers. Like who's this clown like we're professional we know this but regardless nevertheless what does it hurt. Let's do it. And they throw their net on the other side of the boat and all these fish are brought in and a light bulb moment. Happens for peter because this has happened before and last time it happened was jesus who commanded him the throws net boat and he got the same kind of catch. So mealy peter knew. Jesus is making another parents boys. I'm out here. it says. He stripped off his clothes. I don't know if he would skinny dipping or what but he stripped off. His clothes jumped in the water and swam to shore to try to get there before the other guys in says they all got there and jesus had breakfast with him. Can you imagine breakfast with jesus. So he's got the spread all out for them and they're having this intimate conversation with the resurrected savior and in this breakfast. Jesus looks over at peter. He has this conversation with them. And we pick up in verse fifteen says and when they had finished eating jesus said to simon peter simon son of john. Do you love me more than these. Yes lord he said. You know that i love you. Jesus said feed my lambs again. Jesus said simon senator. John d love me. He answered yes lord. You know that. I love you. Jesus said take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him. Simon son of john d love me. Peter was hurt because jesus asked him the third time. Do you love me. And he said lord you know all things you know that i love you and jesus said simply feed my sheep now one of my favorite things about this. And i've preached this to you guys before is not only is this touching on peter's failure story but it's really capturing the essence of the restoration that jesus is giving to peter's identity. It's not a coincidence that he tells them three times feed. You love feed my sheep because three times. He denied him. He was restoring his identity. He was getting them back to a place where he could see himself the same way that god sees him. Yes you've made a mistake. Yes you failed. Yes you've messed up. But my calling in your life. Peter is irrevocable. Nothing can take away this thing. You have to own so you can walk in it. Feed my sheep. Dumai will show my love. Finish the assignment that have given you and that's exactly what happens. I've got declare to you today. Those of you that are stuck in this mode of mistake making and failure living in that is failure is an event. And it's not a person you may have failed but that does not make you a failure and even though the accuser is in your mind telling you these things of who you are you need to know. He's trying to lie to you so that you will be stuck in your in your failure and you'll never embrace the true way that god wants to use you to help change the world so i want to help you today by giving you three truce to come against this lie. Because that's how we experienced freedom. We walk in truth not in the lie and so the best way to expose. The lie is to give you the truth. So i'm gonna give you three life-giving truths as we look at this idea that you're a failure that we want to come against this voice of the enemy in your life and here's the first one it's going to seem so elementary to you but it is so important for you to not just understand it but for you to live in that is you are forgiven your.

Remember god and pray then it sort of keeps. It's almost like working. Your metabolism how you have to eat intermittently at different hours to make sure your body's constantly burning that stuff and make that make sure you have energy. It's kind of like making sure that my mind is always Seeking with god and that there's always gonna be a time throughout the day it's morning night midday that there's always going to be a time for god no matter what and it's really funny. My my little remember. God alarm is a little little harps playing. I think that's a good way of doing it. There's no doubt that you know. Obviously our phones can be used in a bad way but we can also use our phones as a tool to help us be reminded of times to pray times. Remember got even times you know if someone has gone on in life and you know. Hey i want to make sure proof of this person putting that In your phone and giving yourself some some chimes or or whatever you wanted you wanted to exact got a huge lewis on my phone of just tons of people that i know that. "Lord. And so we know that. Peter jon salad. The ball wins to the shore to me the master and so they're on the show he's prepared. They managed kohl's and he's telling them because it's also in the switch away tells the cast the net and when he has the net on the certain side of the ship that they have an abundance of fish the fish. They have an abundance. They're bringing some of the fish that is already set aside on the call so that can eat as a while sitting there. They finish eating. This is when jesus says to simon peter. Simon son of john do to love me. More more or less vocation the cycle that a sitting here java fishermen. Do you love me more than the bowls. Jesus in this verse was you. Warren for love agreed languish. Wars beholds not adopting. But i got the oh which means to love holly lou and do what the lord prefers with him word means embracing god's will shooting his choices and obey them through his. Our jesus was saying prophet of slow. Jesus was saying what he was implying to beater is doing really not meaner you love me some really well course peter replies. Yes you know that. I love you. I love wasn't we got the we here in this particular chapter. This particular worse was referring to is the love love which is also which is in other words the kind of love we throw around all the time. Yeah i love everybody. Dotson everybody i love you you i love you i love you. You'd rather jar. Yeah you go. I love you but remember is an action word and so what peter was saying. It was no. That wasn't what god what jesus was referring to. He's saying you know they were obeying my commandments. Begging what do my. That's the technical. Know the be all love. Jesus was as john here in this particular scenario heater here was clearly a lesser law. That more would accept it and apparently thinks of god. Jesus said because he says subpoena then feed my layers peter to help build the kingdom teaching gods people in twenty one sixteen and seventeen. We read again. That jesus asking simon the son. John do you hughley love me. John is again. Yes lord. Jesus isn't been take care machine. So jesus time any said simon simon and by this time i i would probably be less. I'm like listen jesus. Negative asked me to argue the okay. Enough is enough. Jesus widened key. Hands can be this third time province. You mean the wayne. See him simon john. Do you love me this time. A because jesus. Tim murtaugh say who got to myself. I thought to myself been. maybe just. maybe. The reason why. Peter was so upset and third time. Jesus questioning him about his love. It might have been that. Jesus was now using the word on the dopey ola whether peter even lighten you know they love me. You love me komo. Y'all know what i'm talking about within that god. Some of us may come from backgrounds of dysfunctional homes. Some of us have come from backgrounds and experiences where out of love display before was the sorted in might have been helpful cruel either finding horn to offer love because of fear of rejection due to pass relationships and then on this line then really just really pastor and i play i kimball passer. I really don't know how love. Because i've never seen it properly demonstrated well if you're in any of those categories today and i probably was suggested they author on this line in the shoe that you fit in one of those categories. But i'm here to tell you that it's really okay though. Be polka daniel self. Don't feel bad about it. Maybe our love is in all could be. Maybe it isn't an peo- soup cream law that we're able to but maybe that will love but guess what even in that. If a man quite beulah play over. Jesus hallelujah will still use us kind of god. We serve as god. He will take us where we build up from where we are right there but what we have to realize since just like peter we have to love god enough whether it be with the a whether it be the fellini. That's all i have right now. God even in that. We have to love god enough to obeying offense that when we decide to bala kreis it does cost it does cost something. Go over with me to john twenty one eighteen and nineteen if you're not there go there with me because again. The scenario is here's jesus sitting on the shoreline. They're having a meal together. "We taught on we preached on that. And so today we're talking about loving god. Is god so in other words. We show all we demonstrate low for the master will we obey his commands now. We shouldn't be like you know we all her about the little girl. Show everybody on this line my age. Maybe a little younger than my age would certainly older than my age. You probably heard this story so about the little girl who defiantly continues to stand up. The father told her over and over again to sit and he is frustrating. You'll sit down it in high nia so we find us it down. She looks better five and she says you know what. I'm sitting down on the outside but i'm standing up on the inside and so what this means probably slow. What this means is merely that what she is doing is obeying outwardly but in actuality she is disobeying in ours and so we as christians as men and women of god we should have a willingness to obey guy from our hearts in other words. Not doing it out of out of legal of being legalistic. we're doing is for a form of godliness. We're not doing it at a religion. We're not doing it because we're supposed to do it. But we bane the master because we love him. We obey him from our horse things. God obeying the father isn't harsh shouldn't be. it shouldn't be hard because it's called a yielded. Life shouldn't be hard because it's referring to us as dying to this flesh with all of a selfish ambitions and desires. One thing that i like to do properly should go one thing that i used to be. I'll say is ways to be quiet a little more but those no my personality one of being quiet and why because first of all if you listen to people talk you learn a lot about how were they. Are you learn a lot about. What's really in their hearts. And so when you listen to people sometimes the innocent and conversation but the conversation all you hear is i am going to do this. I'm going do there are going to see this. I'm going to purchase that i to go this. I'm going to be in this. We get to the point until the christians now to the point where is not bow. But it's about god. What do you want me to do. Having sat down having gone to the altar as the song said earlier and having said it really isn't about me promise said isn't it a horrible thing. Thank you as you go to be. Eighty years old seventy years old six years old four years old. I don't know what your purpose is. You still floundering instill know why you're hearing this earth. Why has created you emplaced you here and then you go into this. Go this way of trying this out going in this class going to this conference and you still don't know where you're she'd been one of the i taking the time to god about me but what is it that you will have me to do. What is it. Oh god but you were fashioned. Be anywhere me thank you. Jesus that filming with the holy spirit. What is it that you had called me to do in whole tape on the back burner and it's not about me but what ahead you called me to be. What is it that you want me to do. And yet been seen walking you become an interacted with some of the disciples. And and so they. Peter and the disciples after hearing in knowing of god's death and they were decided would they. Did they wind up going back here to what they knew and so they were out the fishing. We're back to their own vocation and while they're out the fishing. Jesus halloween is resurrected. "Welcome to pilgrim's progress. I'm ray greenlee from the national per chapel. I'm glad you've joined today. I have a message that i think is going to be very helpful. It has been to me. I have learned a very difficult and painful lesson time after time until finally i caught on there is a great difference between desire and obedience. There's a great difference and significant distinction between desire and obedience want to take you to a story in scripture favorite people. The story of peter. We'll take up the story and the twenty second chapter of the book of luke now. This story is found in the gospels. They each have their story. It was considered a desperate time. Jesus is with his disciples in the garden and there comes the jewish leaders and their rebel army with clubs swords. And they arrest. Jesus now before this happened. Jesus said to. Simon peter simon simon. Satan has asked to sift you as weed but i've prayed for you. Simon that your faith may not fail and when you've turned back strengthen your brothers but peter answered jesus saying lord. I'm ready to go with you to prison and to death. I want you to note. Peter was literally willing to die with jesus he desired to be totally faithful to jesus he desired to serve jesus with all of us heart lord. I'm ready to go with you to prison and to death. I tell you peter before. The rooster crows today. You will deny three times that you know me then. Jesus said to them. When i send you without purse beggar sandals did you lack anything. Nothing they answered. They lack nothing. Jesus has provided everything for them. Literally and spiritually and now he's telling peter satan has asked have his way with you because there's an opening there. Peter you're willing to serve me. You're willing to follow me. You're willing to die with me. You're willing to go to the cross with me. The story picks chapter twenty two fifty two then. Jesus said to the chief priests the officials of the temple guard the elders who had come with with them for him and my leading a rebellion. That you've come with swords and clubs every day. I was with you in the temple courts and you did not lay a hand on me but this is your hour when darkness reigns. Then seizing him. They took him into the house of the high priest and peter followed at a distance but when they kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together. Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him. He was seated there in the fire light and she looked closely at him and said this man was with him but he denied it woman. I don't know him later. Someone else saw him and said you also are one of them man. I am not. Peter replied about an hour later another asserted. Certainly this fellow was with him for he is a galileo. He had a different twang in his voice. Peter replied. I don't know what you're talking about. Just as he was speaking the rooster crowed turned and looked straight at peter and then peter remembered the word. The lord had spoken to him before the rooster crows. Today you will disown me three times. You will disown me three times. Was it the desire of peter to disown. Jesus no it was not. It was peter's desire to go to the cross of necessary to die if necessary. It was peter's desire to be completely loyal to jesus was peter's desire to be utterly honest and obedient but it wasn't today. I need to ask you question. Is that enough to be willing to follow. Jesus and the answer of courses no. It's not enough to be willing to serve. Jesus because when you're willing to serve jesus you've taken only step number one but there's another step you must take and that step is called will and the question is will you move beyond desire and will you do what you say. Are you only filled with desire for jesus and then when it becomes uncomfortable then when it becomes inconvenient then when it becomes embarrassing. Do you have the willpower to stand. I saw a quote from rush limbaugh. This morning i found it very interesting. He said i discovered the people. Were going to hate me. Because i did stand for what they stood for. I stood for something else. And as i stood for that something else i had to recognize that my success was dependent upon a certain portion of america hating me. This is a lesson we need to learn..

"Our first lesson this morning comes from first John Chapter four, beginning at verse 16. Let's listen to God's word for us. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love and those who abide in love abiding God. And God abides and them. Love has been perfected among us in this That we may have boldness on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love. Perfect. Love casts out fear. Fear has to do with punishment and whoever fear has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say I love God. Hate their brother or sisters. Liars. For those who do not love a brother or sister, whom they have seen. Cannot love God whom they have not seen. Commandment we have from him is this Those who love God must love They're brothers and sisters also This is the word of our Lord. Thanks Be to God. You're looking now at the post resurrection appearances of Jesus and we hear yet another story this taken from the Gospel of John 21st chapter beginning at the first verse. After these things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Thai beer Ius, and he showed himself in this way. Gather there together were Simon Peter. Thomas called the twin. It's good to see the Thomas has been restored to this gathering. You recall he was absent the night of Jesus first appearance. Nathaniel of Qena in Galilee, the sons of 70, James and John to other disciples as well. I'm not sure why they aren't named here. Simon, Peter said to them, I'm going fishing and they said to him, we'll go with you. They went out and got into the boat. But that night, they caught nothing. Just after daybreak. Jesus stood on the beach. But the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them Children. You have no fish, have you? They answered him. No. He said to them, cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast it and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord. He put on some clothes for he was naked and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish for they were not far from the land only about 100 yards off. When they had gone ashore. They saw charcoal fire there with fish on it and bread. Jesus said To them, bring some of the fish. You've just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hold the net is sure full of large fish 153 of them. Find out a fascinating little detail that seems to lend some authenticity to the credence of this story. And although there were so many, the net was not Thorne Jesus said To them come and have breakfast now, none of the disciples there to ask him. Who are you? Because they knew it was the Lord Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter Simon, son of John You love me more than these? He said to him. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you and Jesus said to him feed my lambs. The second time he said to him, Simon, son of John, Do you love me? He said to him? Yes. Would you know that I love you? And Jesus said to him tend my sheep. You said to him the third time signed Simon, son of John, Do you love me and Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time do you love me? And he said, Lord, you know everything you know that I love you. And Jesus said to him. Feed my sheep. Let us break. God, we give you thanks for the gift of the day for the privilege of worship. And even in our time of separation, we know the unity of your holy spirit that binds us together. And so even now, may we be bound together into the teaching of your word in our reflections may the words of my mouth and made the meditations of our hearts together, Find acceptance in your sight. For it is through Christ and to his honor and glory. We pray it. Men. During these past several weeks, really? Since Easter. We have been looking together the post resurrection appearances of Jesus recall. We've heard of his appearing to Mary at the tomb early that morning. Into two of his followers as they walked on the road to e mails that same day. Later that evening, he appeared to the 12, or at least to the gathered 10 Judas. Absent Now, Thomas absent as well. He appears in the upper room, closed door locked windows. A week later, he appeared again to them this time, with Thomas present to assure him to assure them to assure us that he really was alive and to give that same assurance to us. To all of us who have not seen and yet have come to believe. In our reflections On these appearances we have explored together the nature of faith. And the inevitability of doubt. We've asked questions as to how Christ continues to make himself known to us today and what it takes for us to recognize him in the every day of our lives. And now this morning, we're asking the all important question. So what are we supposed to do with all of this? Or as I ask of you in a recent video, how shall we then live?.

resurrection appearances of Jesus recall we've heard of his appearing to Mary at the tomb early that morning then to two of his followers as they walked on the road to email us that same day later that evening he appeared to the twelve or at least to the gathered ten Judas absent now Thomas absent as well he appears in the upper room closed door locked windows a week later he appeared again to in our reflections on these appearances we have explored together the nature of faith and the inevitability about we ask questions as to how Christ continues to make himself known to us today and what it takes for us to recognize him in the everyday of our lives and now this morning we are asking the all important question so what are we supposed to do with all of this or as I ask of you in a recent video how shall we then live or as we ask when we talk on our can I get a witness Sunday what difference does the resurrection does the fact that Jesus is still alive have to do with the way you live your life today in our gospel lesson from John Peter decides that he's had enough of this and that in the activity and we can probably say an amen to that so he says I'm going fishing and several others say will go with you despite all that they had heard and seen they were ready to get back to the normal routine and again we could probably get an amen to that and it is exactly there that they have yet another encounter with Jesus it is there that the life of faith is actually lived out for them and for us not on the mountain top not in the upper room no those are the exceptions not the rule to Jesus appearance this faith of ours is intended to be lived out in the day to day of life as we actually know it it is in the commonplace of our lives that we come face to face with Jesus but again the question is asking us do we recognize him there the disciples had been added the better part of the night they were coming up empty as dawn was breaking they still had no fish and we're no doubt tired and frustrated and ready to call it a day it's not gonna be easy getting back to business as usual is it and yet there was a stranger on the shore who offered them some unsolicited advice try casting your net to the right side of the boat and you'll catch some well I'm sure that was well received and yet to everyone's amazement when they did so they pulled in a hall that strained their necks in the miracle of that common experience the disciple recognize John recognize this stranger and shouted it is the lord and with that Peter dives into the water and swims to shore and then it was there in the common experience of the shoreline breakfast the Jesus revealed himself once again although once again he must not have looked like he did prior to the crucifixion and resurrection somehow Jesus looked different in his post resurrection appearances and yet still we are told there was no doubt in anyone's mind that it was Jesus himself it makes me wonder when have we seen him and perhaps not recognized him Mother Teresa speaks of seeing Jesus in disguise in the poor the sick the outcast which begs the question lord when did we see you reading about these post resurrection appearances has caused me to want to keep my eyes and my heart open my spiritual antenna up in those I encounter each day so after breakfast Jesus and Peter have some much needed time alone together in Jesus begins to ask him some pressing questions Peter son of John now that would have been his full name kind like we use our children's full names when we really want to get their attention Peter son of John Peter bar homeowners do you Love Me more than these we're not sure exactly what the bees are the Jesus was referring to a Peter answers yes lord you know that I love you well of course the method but really what else could he have answered in that moment right so Jesus responds feed my lambs again a second time he asked Peter asks Peter son of John do you Love Me and again Peter answers yes lord you know that I love you to which Jesus replies tend my sheep we know that repetition in the Bible it is the way to show emphasis well even as it does in our conversations we repeat those parts of our conversations that we want to make sure are heard by the other and so when Jesus asks him the third time Peter do you Love Me he's understandably hurt he's confused he's offended his integrity his character being called into question what street is getting out of here and really what more can he say and so for the third time Peter responds yes lord you know that I love you and again Jesus for the third time replies feed my sheep not much has been made about the three fold question that Jesus asks and the three fold in in response are in relationship to the threefold denial which Peter had experienced earlier surely this is the restoration of Peter into relationship with Jesus and to the others hi others have also focused on the two different words for love which both Jesus and Peter use in this interchange Jesus asks Peter do you all got pay me that is the unconditional word for love in the Greek and Peter responds yes lord you know that I've filet O. U. that is brotherly love and there may be something worth exploring to that but many scholars simply suggests that the gospel writers simply trying to use different language to keep this story interesting so day today I'd like to focus either on Jesus question which surely is the question continues to ask of you and me today nor on Peter's repeated response which I pray is our response as well in order that we can focus our attention on perhaps the more overlooked repeated instruction which is a skills ten by lamps feed my.

"When they had finished eating. Jesus said to Simon Peter. Simon son of John. Do you truly love me more than these. Yes Lord he said You know this I love you. Jesus said fate my lands again. Jesus said Simon. I'm an son of John. Do you truly love me. He answered Yes Lord. You know that I love you. Jesus said take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him Simon Son of John. Do you love me way. Peter was her because Jesus asked him the third time. Do you love me. He said Lord you know all things you know. That's how I love you. Jesus said feed my sheep. I tell you the truth. Choose when you were younger. You dressed yourself and went where you wanted but when you are old you stretch out your hands and someone no one else will trust you and lead you where you do not want to go. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify Refi God then he said to him follow me. Pizza turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus Love was following them. This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus of the supper and it said Lord who is going to betray you when Peter saw him he asked Lord what about him. Jesus said if I want him to remain alive until I return what is not to you. You must follow me because of this. The room spreads among the brothers that this disciple would not die but Jesus did not say that he would not die. He only said if I want him to remain alive until I return. What is back to you? This is the disciple who testifies to these things. Hundred them down. We know that this testimony his true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down I suppose that not even the whole world. I would not have room for the books that would be written on..

"Of whom I am the foremost and also the gospel reading for today John twenty one verses fifteen to nineteen when they had finished practice Jesus said to Simon Peter Simon son of John do you Love Me more than these he said them yes lord you know that I love you he said them feed my lambs he said to him a second time Simon son of John do you Love Me he said them yes lord you know that I love you he said to him ten my sheep he said to him the third time Simon son of John do you Love Me Peter was great because he said in the third time do you Love Me any set them lord you know everything you know that I love you Jesus said to him feed my sheep truly truly I say to you when you're young you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted but when your old you'll stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go this he said to show what kind of death he was to glorify god and after saying this he said them follow me it's been awhile since I've been able to talk with you hire give a message and I it's a privilege to be here over the summer we've been going through this walk with Jesus we've been walking with Jesus and following the footsteps of some of the offense and are miracles and different things that have happened during the course of his ministry while he walked here on this earth we started out on the banks of Jordan and the sea of Galilee on the shores of Galilee we've walked with him off from the hill where the sermon on the mount was preached to the server the hill where he died the hill then call gets up we've been to his home town north there's first town of Bethlehem all the way to the capital city of Jerusalem and today we're going to continue with our last stop and we're gonna go right back to where it all started a number of years ago while my wife and I along with a number of other members here piece were privileged to be able to go and to walk the footsteps of Jesus and to go to Israel and visit some of the sites some places where Jesus is ministry I don't remember one particular morning we rock walk down this shady lane add the following in the past week we turn the corner and we were greeted with this scene the shores of the sea of Galilee and as we gaze down on the CD we saw this fishing boat our eyes moved counter clockwise from the rights to the last and we saw another fishing boat and another there were a number of boats but there was something that I noticed that there on the sea of Galilee the boats that I saw were all in this area they weren't out farther but all the boats all the fishing boats right there there's a good reason for this this is a place called tab or seven springs underneath the sea all the like of of the the sea of Galilee there are seven springs and as they feed into the waters of the sea of Galilee those waters from those springs is just a little bit warmer than all the other water in the area and it attracts the fish I wear the fish congregate the fishermen congregate right and so we have the fishermen there this was a favorite fishing spot of the commercial fishermen now and it was back in the time of Peter and James and John last week pastor Dave shared a Bible passage and it talked about an event that took place in this very place here on the sea of Galilee on these shores and I think it's going to be important for us to understand our story for today because it's a little bit ago pastor Dave shared Rory a conversation that took place between Peter and Jesus in order to fully understand that particular store I think we need to go back to the story the pastor Dave shared with us last week so the disciples Peter and James and John a bunch of other disciples were gathered together and suddenly being who Peter was he op impetuous Lee said Hey I'm gonna go Fishin and several of the other the other said okay we'll go with you we're told that there were a total of seven of them that went fishing that day and dives out that night it was a Tory Astley on successful fishing trip as the morning broke and the sun started to rise on the eastern part of the lake they have no fish but there was a figure on the shore the figure looked at Mrs children have any fish it was a resounding no that was their answer and then the figure on the V. said Mr naps on the other side and you will find some so they did I am they do cast their notes on the other side and they did catch a great catch of this show but is so big that they could scarcely bring it in John turned to Peter and he said it's the lord and as you remember last week Peter put on his cloak and he jumped into the lake and he swam to be with Jesus he couldn't wait to get there I was pastor Dave assuring that story last week I kept thinking to myself I wonder what was going on in Peter's mind as he was looking at the events that took place that morning an unsuccessful fishing trip figure Jesus telling them that it was important for them to have cast their naps again and then on great catch of fish I wonder if Peter was remembering the first time that happened at the very beginning of Jesus ministry as he had said told them to do the very same thing I was wondering whether Peter in and maybe the other disciples too for that matter we're remembering to command the Jesus gave them after all of that follow me and I will make you fishers of men you see they weren't worthy of that what an honor it would be for them men who weren't educated enough they weren't rich enough they weren't well connected politically it off they weren't even have considered to be intelligent enough to follow a rabbi much this rabbi Jesus the son of god the lamb of god that takes away the sin of the world and here this rap I was looking at them and say follow me one hundred rentable experience is a must have been as a beginner ministry with Jesus.

"No matter what we do for God. It probably will about the zero one of the real problems for any Christian is that he or she may get caught up with a lot of action. Lot of action in life, including church life. A lot of motion and lose sight of our love for Jesus Christ. It's possible to run here, and there and get involved in this or that and never really take the time to examine our own parts every now, and then I think it's a very wise thing for us to do to come back to a very basic question. Do I do this because I love the Lord Jesus Christ. Apparently in the life and ministry of the possible Paul there were times that he did that because when he wrote Second Corinthians. He said the love of Christ controls us. I don't care who we are. Or even how spiritual we think we are the truth is we all need to specifically crawl through these verses, and we all need to examine ourselves. This is a wonderful text of scripture because it shows that it's possible to have blown a big time as a believer. And then get back on track for the Lord to be greatly used by him. But there's also no doubt that in order for that to happen. One must face things. Honestly and squarely before God one must be willing to do very honest business with God. That's exactly what Peter does right here. Breakfast was over and during the meal. No, one had said a word now Jesus was going to speak, and he was going to speak the Peter Peter probably was sitting around that fire. Looking at those charcoals that were burning. He had denied the Lord three times standing by a charcoal fire, and this would be the perfect place to restore him. Because now he's just finished eating at another charcoal. Fire just as Peter had denied Christ three times Christ was going to question. Peter three times in the aftermath of that Peter was going to confess three times. And then Jesus was going to commission him three times. The point of all of that. Is that Jesus Christ is specifically restoring Peter. He's doing that my questioning is love and by commanding his responsibilities. What I find very interesting about this particular scene is that the other disciples who were also around that little fire had been those who had actually fled and run away from Jesus Christ. But the one to whom Jesus is giving this address didn't initially run away. You can be certain though, that these others were carefully listening and all of them could relate this truly is a big moment in Peter's life because it showed these other disciples that God's calling to apostle ship was still on Peter's life. If a man or a woman is honest about sin he or she can be greatly used by the Lord. That's what you see when you look at a text like this. That's what Peter teaches us Jesus Christ was about to completely restore Peter in a moment's time. William van Doren made an IMF. Interesting observation when he said had this been left, a most churches, they would have had Peter kneeling at the door in penance for the next fifteen years, but Jesus is going to deal with him right here. And now, and he's going to settle this once for all now, there are three main exchanges that I want to show you tonight that bring this passage to our understanding the first exchange is an exchange in which Jesus Christ questions. Peter. There are three main questions that Jesus asked Peter in these verses and the question to Peter is not you remember that other charcoal fire you were just a few days ago. It's a question that really questions his love question. Number one, Simon Peter Simon of John do you love me more than these? Now when Jesus uses that Simon Peter Simon son of John formula. He's reminding Peter that he is old fallen nature that apparently did fall by repeating that all throughout this context. He's implying that Peter you have some options here in your Christian life. You can live your life as the old man or you can live your life as a new calling apostle. And what he's really saying is Peter. Do you with your sin nature think that you love me more than these with their sin? Nature's. That's really what he's asking the verb. Love is an interesting verb. It's the verb a copy, I Powell this particular verb is the highest kind of love that can ever be given. It's a love the God is that God's level of love. "And then Jesus was going to commission him three times. Interesting observation when he said had this been left, the most churches, they would have had Peter kneeling at the door in penance for the next fifteen years, but Jesus is going to deal with him right here. It's the verb Agabi. "Dollars. Their labor comes from their love and their patients comes from their hope. Now, we're going to look at these three things in closer detail. Just a moment. But first I want us to think again about how we started this lesson. How we started our time together we're asking the question is Christianity, something that. We can just believe is Christianity only about what we think. Or is. It also about what we do. And the answer is provided. Just in this verse. We have a work of faith, a labor of love and patience that comes from hope and just looking at this passage alone tells me that it's not just about believing. It's also about doing it's also about action. And so as we dig deeper into what these three phrases are in reference to will begin to see that even more. Clearly, so let's look first of all he says your work faith. Now, the word work that he uses in the Greek New Testament, it is a work that just refers to manual labor. It is a general word that refers to match. Manual labor, and you might make note in your New Testament or on your notepad that Paul will make reference to manual labor more than once in this book, for example, when you read chapter two in verse nine he talks about himself. And he says you remember brethren are labor and toil for laboring night and day that we might not be a burden to any of you. We preach the gospel of God, you could also write down chapter four and verse number eleven where he says that you aspire to lead a quiet life to mind, your own business and to work with your own hands as we commanded you. So he talks about his own work manual labor. And he says when we were with you. We made commander we gave command that all of you that all of us are involved in manual labor. But that's a different kind of work. That's a different kind of labor. Those two passages. He is talking about working to make a living. But in chapter one in verse three are pass. When he talks about a work faith. He's not talking about working to make a living. He's not talking about that kind of manual labor. Instead, he's talking about putting your faith to work. If you will he is talking about a spiritual work or a spiritual service that results from our faith now right away that brings to mind the question, isn't it true that the bible tells us that we are saved by faith and not by works. Well, the answer to that question is yes, inefficient chapter two beginning in verse. Number eight, the apostle Paul by inspiration wrote for by grace. You have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God not of works. Lest any man should boast. So it's absolutely right. We are not saved by works. We're saved by faith. Well, then why is it that Paul would talk about work that comes from faith? We'll keep reading any Fijian's two. And look at the next verse verse ten. He says for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Now, do we have a contradiction here in the east reverses Paul says in verse eight and nine we're saved by grace through faith, but not by works. And then in verse ten he says, we are created for works. So how do we reconcile these two things together and find that answer or to understand that answer? Even better. Let's look at a couple of more context that will help us to see it clearly look at Romans chapter four just for a moment. And I want you to read with me from Romans chapter four beginning in about verse. Number one. I want us to know what Paul says about Abraham. Paul says in Romans four one what shall we say? The what shall we? Then say then that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh. Verve. Abraham was justified by works. He has something to boast about. But not before God for what does the scripture say Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness now to him who works the wages are not county disgrace, but his debt but to him that does not work but believes on him who justifies the ungodly his faith is accounted for righteousness. Now, let's put our bookmark there for a moment and look at James chapter two and notice what James said about Abraham, and then we'll start piecing these connecting all of these pieces together in James chapter two James Michener Abraham says this in verse twenty three are actually verse twenty one sorry verse twenty one he says was was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the alter you see that faith was working. Gather with his works. And by works faith was made perfect and the scripture was fulfilled which said Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God. You see them that a man is justified by works and not by faith only. Now, how do we put all these passages together? Innovations to verse nine and ten we have Paul saying were saved by grace through faith, not of works. But we've been created for works. And then Romans four we have Paul saying that Abraham was justified not by works, but by faith, and then in James to Abraham is Abraham is justified by faith. So how do we put all this together? Well, the answer is that we're talking about different kind of work. You see in Romans chapter four when Paul talks about work. He is talking about what we might call works of merit and the best way to think about that. Or what that means is to look at verse number four when Paul uses. Is the word wages that? It works. The wages are not counted. What our wages think about it? In terms of an employee and an employer unemploy, basically enters into an agreement with his employer that at the end of a specified work, period. Whether it be a week, whether it be hours, whether it be a month, whatever it is at the end of a specified work, period. That employer is going to pay that employees an agreed upon amount of money. Let's say it's one thousand dollars for every forty hour week that is worked. So what happens at the end of a forty hour week. Well, the employer is indebted to the employee because the employee has fulfilled his end of the agreement, and he has earned that one thousand dollar wage. That's the kind of work that Paul is talking about with Abraham enrollments for Abraham did not earn justification in the sight of God in the sense that that God is the employer and Abraham. Is the employees. And so therefore God is indebted to Abraham to save him. It doesn't work that way. Abraham did not earn it. He did not merit it. Now when we go to James chapter two James is talking about a different kind of work. He's talking about works of obedience. He's talking about works of faith, if you will taking us right back to first vessel Onians chapter one and verse number three you see faith works. And the point is when you look at Romans four when you look at equations to when you look at James to and you put all of it together. What we learned is that there is no way that we can earn or merit. Our right standing our salvation in the side of God. It's not possible to do that we depend upon the grace of God to provide that opportunity to provide the means to make it possible. But then because we believe in what God says because we have faith we obey. So in Abraham enrollments for what we see is a faith that accepted what God said that trusted. What God said that obeyed what God said, and that's the kind of faith that the bible says has to be present in the life of each and every one of us, that's the kind of faith that was present in the life of the brethren at Thessalonica, and that's why Paul remembered them and prayed for them giving thanks to God for them. Always because they had a faith that accepted that trusted and that obeyed it was a working faith. If you will again, not that we earn or not that we married God provides and we respond God gives the gift and we take advantage of the gift. We simply obey. What it is that God wants us to do. It is a working faith Galicians five in verse. Six also talks about faith, which works by love Hebrews chapter ten versus twenty two to twenty four talks about a number of things that. The New Testament Christians are to do let us draw near with a true heart. The rider says in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil, conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering for he who promised is faithful and let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together. As is the matter of some, but exhorting one another and so much the more you see the day approaching notice. He says we have a true heart and full assurance of faith. I twenty two, but what do we do based on that true heart in full assurance of faith? We draw near that's action. We have our hearts sprinkled from an evil, conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. That's action. We hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering. That's action we consider one another in order to stir up to love and good works. That's action. And we make sure not to forsake the assembling. Of ourselves together in verse twenty five that also is action. You see when we study the bible what we learn is that there just is no such thing as faith alone being acceptable before God. In fact, the passage we read from James to where faith alone is mentioned. That's the only time in the entirety of the bible where you'll find that phrase, and in that passage it says explicitly that will not please God that faith by itself is not pleasing with God. It is always faith and works that come from faith, not works of merit, but works of obedience because we believe we obey. That's the idea and Paul says, and I s alone is one in verse three that they work they had manual labor because of their faith. But now look at the next phrase labor of love. Now, the obvious question is why why would Paul use the word work, and then also the word labor. What's the difference between work and labor? Well, the differences in the definition of the original Greek words, the word work as you remember is a generic term for manual labor. But the word labor is more specific it refers to hard strenuous exhausting, kind of work exhausting, kind of labor. Sometimes we say things like well that man's going to work himself to death. What do we mean by that? Or we say something like, well, I'm working my fingers to the bone. What do we mean by that? What we're talking about someone who who works long hard hours. It's not easy work at all it wears them out physically and mentally and emotionally. That's the word that the apostle Paul is using here. He's talking about real labor and in. Volved in this real labor is the idea of sacrifice the idea of sacrifice now, I want you again to note, a number of verses in the book of first us alone. That are associated with this concept. For example. I this alone in chapter five verse thirteen verse twelve and thirteen rather he says, we urge you brethren to recognize those who labor among you and are over you and the Lord and admonish you and esteem them very highly and love for their work sake. I four verse nine and ten Paul says, but concerning brotherly love, you have no need that. I should write to you for yourselves taught to by God's love one another. And indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in Macedonia. But we urge you brethren that you increase in your love, both more and more. There's I s loans three in verse. Number twelve may the Lord make. To increase in abound in love toward one another. And all just as we do to you. So a number of passages in the book of I s alone ins deal with labor and they deal with love. Now, you should also consider this you should consider just like throughout the bible. We learned that faith does not stand alone. We also in the bible learn that love does not stand alone that love is not just an emotion or a feeling or a thought, but that love is action in John chapter twenty one beginning in verse number fifteen after the resurrection of Jesus Christ just shortly before his ascension into heaven, listen to what Jesus said to the apostle Peter John chapter twenty one beginning in verse fifteen so when they had eaten breakfast Jesus said to Simon Peter Simon son of Jonah, do you love me more than these..
