"Ball. Gye mud cost been now, you out that podcast out and started listening. I took my micro and found some human folk then I recalled it all while. I name as at Boxster nine. I want you to joy, that's the. Hey, how you doing podcasts Adam Buxton here? Yeah. Guess where I am. That's right off way up a mountain in Peru with bed grills and hipster drug smugglers know, not I mean, he stangely beg on my routine. I'm sticking to it as long as I can. Out here with Rosie. Hey, rose gives a hug you. Doc, telling rose, I love her in her own voice must be confusing. Four. As I speak. It's a blustery evening. The sun is going down. And I'm looking out over a field that was harvested awhile back and is now covered with stubble. Little short straw, stumps. And this spider community have woven threads between the tops of every stump. And now that the sun is low on the horizon, it's all back lit. So it looks like you'll very very high above thousands of tiny little golden rope bridges stretched between a forest of very straight trees. It's quite as spectacular sight. Shut up buckles. Tell us about the podcast. All right. Put cost number eighteen three features a conversational ramble with British actor writer comedian and action figure Simon Pegg. I got to know Simon at the end of the nineteenth of to seeing him in TV shows like I'm Alan Partridge Brosseau. And of course, the sitcom spaced directed by Edgar right, featuring co writer, Jessica Hynes and Nick frost and keep and so many other great great people, and I would bump into all. All that lot at social events in London now and then during the early two thousands, and it was always good to see them. And then in two thousand six Edgar cost me as annoying local reporter Tim messenger in hot fuzz, which he had co written with Simon and I enjoyed a very happy couple of weeks with Simon and the rest of the cost on location in wells where my character was superbly and gory dispatched by a falling church. Spire by the time hot fuzz came out in two thousand seven Simon had also paid in mission impossible three alongside Tom Cruise. And he was off on a path that has seen him continue to work with Edgar and Nick frost as well. As far as I can tell pretty much all of his childhood heroes on projects like Steven Spielberg's Tinton and ready player one. More impossible missions with the cruiser and various joints into the universities of Star Wars and Star Trek all of which we talked about in this conversation, which incidentally was recorded in October of this year twenty eight at Simon's house out in the country north of London where he lives with his wife Maureen and his daughter Tilly, Simon and I sat down.

"Yep. Enjoy. University. Go in and watch it. We the only one. The ball and John was. Challenge. And then we got one question, right? Plenty. The question was the easiest one on university. Oh my God. Right. Let's be people dragging us out of here. The head the head of Nick frost stars of pillar of two. It's been a pleasure. Thanks, guys. Simon Pegg and a lot of fun, or at least the bits that I kept in. So let's now talk about the films that are out this week in cinemas for you to see we're going to start with quaint serious film. Hard hitting fill a Mike Leigh film Peterloo. Helen, tell us about this. Yes, I'm probably not to be sung to the tune of orderly by ABA. I don't do that do not do that. This is Mike Lee's face really not. This is the story of the Peterloo massacre, which was a major moment in the history of democracy actually in this country. So it was a peaceful pro democracy rally in the eighteen twenties. Eighteen nineteen when no everyone had the vote. You had to be landowning man of certain age with a certain value of land owned, which led to laws like the corn laws which closed huge suffering for everyday people led to complete lack of representation for working working class. People was basically a bad thing yesterday for voting we will do that. Anyway, especially if you're in America this week. Hello. So. This is about the sort of the run-up to that massacre. The run up the situation on the ground the kind of people involved the the activists who were trying to get people together. Led by the Manchester observer Joel night play by Philip Jackson among those people, and there's the arrogant kind of awful, but also wonderful speaker Henry hunt who was a major campaigner. He's played by ROY Konare. He is the most Hissel hero. I think I've seen long time because he is right everything he says, but he's also just the worst person he's so obnoxious, and then you have a an ordinary family to sort of represent the people in the grind with Maxine Peake as Nellie sort of matriarch of that family. Her young son is just come back from fighting the wars, David Merced. He plays Joseph has come back from fighting for England at Waterloo and a few years before he's he's scarred embodying mind, and he is really struggling to find work, and they rep. The sort of little microcosm of the average people in the grind. And the all builds towards, you know, spoiler the Peterloo massacre at where where basically the the yeomanry and the the the army road against these peacefully gathered people in a square at Sint, Petersfield, Manchester, and it was a bloody and notorious event even at the time sequence. Yeah, it's really it's really quite shocking piece of English history than I did not know about. I mean, I did because I'm a big leftie, by didn't know a law of the background. That's in this. I think it's good. I think we shouldn't just tell stories about kings, and queens, we need to tell these kind of stories by normal people. So I think that's really really important to do. And I think it's and oversight in that respect. It is a film though, with a lot of people going into rooms and talking at other people for about two hours before you get to the the event itself in questions. So do be warned that is going to happen. The talking. Is actually a law of it's fascinating..

"You're reveals the audience that they're in cahoots, and he's actually a bad guy. And then he goes Cavaco's. She's right. They are just a bunch of children running around in masks and realizes that Simon Pegg is the one sitting there. Right? That part was awesome. And then boggling comes up behind him with the gun, and he goes, I, I've ruined your day heaven. Yeah, yeah, that that whole, I love all that fucking shit. I didn't like wolf Blitzer being a. He wasn't. It was Simon Pegg. Dresses will. Yeah, I, that was my only issue and then it's crazy that they still do the face peeling off. I mean, it's insane. In in a series of movies that are so based in reality, it's it's where they keep going back to it, but it is mission impossible. Tell you this. It's even it's even crazier than I'm still buying it. Yeah, still going along with it when they say I'm gonna make a mask of his face in wear it everytime like off course you are? Yes. You need to do right now. Yeah. Yeah, it was. It was a good flick. I really enjoyed it. The. That that those opening sequences get me revved up, man, that whole thing I'm owes. You know, when a, yeah, the wolf Blitzer part where he walks in and then the four walls fall, you realize it's not a hospital. He has in their facility, and he goes this. This goes, this goes far as we say, goes or whatever the line is kicks into the fuse. And the music. That's exciting stuff, man, I agree. Joe, that's exciting stuff. I actually thought it would have been better. I mean this if wolf Blitzer was actually wolf Blitzer, but. But a member of the IMF they said, never see. That would have been rally, right? It's crazy, but I just thought it would have been funny for the soul time. Wolf Blitzer was like a secret agent or something. You get another Austin powers. I mean, if there's a God in heaven, we will. There's zero chance come on dude. If Myers went to net flix and said, I wanna do an Austin powers, which might be what we'd get. They do it if he wants to go with the ethical, I dunno people would see it. I'd see it. I'll tell you that much. Dude. Anything's possible. We've seen we saw Star Wars with seventy five year old Han solo like anything's possible. True. What about Wayne's world now wins world three. It would be that would just be sad at this point. I think that would be what's great about it. Well, that's what the Bill and Ted thing kind is is like that they too was pretty sad as well. There's a melancholy too. Well, it also is sad when because they're, it's fine when those two guys are running, like Dante runs the convenience store and Randall runs the videos. That's fine. But if they're in their forties or fifties or sixties, once you take those guys out of that and you and they have to work fast food together, that's gonna gets depressing. Yeah. You know, so clerks three, not happening, but Jay and silent. Bob get rebutted is very excited for that as a mine. I think it's going to be great. You know, it's an exact. It's an exact. It's so up its own ass. It's crazy. It's an exact remake of Jay and silent. Bob strike back. What is the Jay and silent Bob reboot movie. What do you making that face for? I don't know what you're talking about. Kevin Smith is his next movie is Jay and silent. Bob get a reboot. Oh, okay. That's the movie. It's a sequel to Jane silent. Bob strike back and they are making up. Sorry back into a no. And the plot of it is is they're finding Jane saw about find out Hollywood is doing a reboot of blunt men and chronic. Okay. And they have to go across country again to stop it. So it's like this. That's like the most self referential thing I've ever. Yeah, I'm already confused. It's the same plot as the original, except for our, it's they're older and Hollywood is making another re reboot of that first movie that they were going to stop in the first film. You follow me, I follow you. Coming out soon. I think it's definitely getting made. It's not like, did you like Japan silent Bob, strike back? Yeah, that's laughs. I loved it. It's got my favorite. "So when you think about it, when you sit down to watch a movie, it's kind of like looking out a window into another world. Sometimes it's just a peek into someone else's life. Other times it shows you a whole other universe either way. It doesn't last very long, just a couple of hours unless you can find a way to turn that window into a door. Simon Pegg may that happened. He grew up devouring Hollywood blockbusters like a lot of kids do, but then he went the extra mile and he really studied everyone of those windows. The port everything. He learned about movies into the first big film scripts that he wrote. Shaun of the dead and hot fuzz are both tributes to Hollywood jarred movies. And now several years later, Simon Pegg is wholeheartedly Hollywood. He's on the other side of that window down. He's doing his own stunts in a world of helicopter chases explosions, underwater espionage. You can see what I mean when mission impossible fallout opens in theaters this Friday. So I had the chance to. See at the other night, Simon Pegg was in the theater himself, and it turns out the first time he saw the final cut. He also had a whole feeder audience there with him. It was kind of like he was on both sides of the class. It was an amazing experience. I saw in Paris for the first time we were there, and it was an extraordinary experience because I, I knew what was going to happen. I knew all the twists and turns I've been there on the day and yet still wasn't exhilarating experience for me. That kind of left me little sleepless in journalist, the it is it is an extremely exciting film. It's kind of relentlessly entertaining, and that's how it was designed with MacQuarie and and cruise. They just sort of, they teamed up to create the ultimate sort of. Action movie. Yeah, and you're just kind of in it from the go. And there's been so many of these movies now, and I mean this this franchise is such a huge machine. I mean, as you said yesterday, the screening of what was it? One hundred and forty four days of. "Yeah i think he sort of was at pains to continue that the sort of diversity of look has happened across the series by hiring an entirely new sort of team in terms of the dp the costume designer so the film feels difference recognizes part of the beauty of the franchise has been so just light rogue nation part too even though to some degree it is a continuation of that story because it still shown harris's back rebecca ferguson right back but we also have henry cavill as well and his wonderful mustache haven't heard about that funny i you know i really love henry he's great fun and i remember asking him i won't put him on the spot but after he got back from his justice league press we were makeup on i said who's to blame who's to blame henry is us for making you keep it or them for not having to reshoot so late in the day i won't tell you okay i'll follow up with not sincere keri russell cut off her hair felicity has there been such a controversial but it's like the truth is that we were deep into offshoot and henry had some some some difficult stunt to do he didn't really have a full beard so like it's difficult to mimic stubble right and it just it just by that time he was he belonged to us then i'm sorry sorry they got an amazing movie out of an injustice league have seen it i haven't seen it.

"We're writing it together and it's a sort of paranormal investigation sitcom it's really funny we wrote the pilot episode if i do sex myself but maybe that's because i find myself laris right but also i find nicolaas nick makes me laugh more than anyone in the world and cry we'd love to ever around him but there's other stuff we were doubting third party i pay as well you know we have some books we're going to adapt in feels like the beginning of a new era of creativity for us nice so and i think last time you were on the podcast years back we were talking about directing potential that's happening the end of this year yeah yeah hopefully stop prep for that in after finish presser mission got it we're around the world are you going for mission where where my tagging along hopefully for press i think definitely stein paris because we show a lot of it that i can do that that's fine yeah and then we usually go to old around right yeah yeah thanks to between the mission franchise and transformer paramount has let me see australia it's great it's brilliant it's like the last like boondoggle of junket in the world dine spectacle film so i will always support not to mention i love the mission films so we alluded to this for the first time that a director has returned for mission imposs yeah and i feel we're in safe hands with mccue as you call him corey and i'm excited also in that like there's some linkage to the last film it's would seem.

"Good so it's really fun to watch and see be validated by by her enjoyment which is nice we watched avatar the date of interesting one yeah and she was pretty favorite film is is titanic that's amazing i saw titanic five times in the theater pretty much adult male so you know it works everybody i realized that it is this incredible combination of the best and the worst film and you can see how it's so sort of cheesy and terrible it's on the joyo it's pretty satisfying says all avatar hate out there and i get it it's like he's very earnest filmmaker avatar was avatar had a story that was was very very basic a little bit patronizing when you start to realize the prices that are involved but i think with the visual sort of palate that extraordinary the story has to be a little bit easy to swallow is very kind of binary but he right for four more i don't know i zoe saldana is at the moment you know every time i speed so she's like dealt over seemed like a good idea at the time ten years ago but she loves it you know she she could be near the kids and she's just wearing join join us the drain so can we talk a little star trek just the last time one of the ones i sat down with you probably spur star trek beyond which you talked about this a little bit but i remember going into it and you've been kind of critical and honest about the marketing or whatever and i would i would agree with you though because like going into it i was worried i didn't know if i was going to like you're moving well.

"Damn work today so you've seen the film twice you're saying yeah i saw it just last night and you were you said that it's kind of an overwhelming experience and that's part of the joy of it it's such like a it's like a perfect home for these times of all it is like a celebration of of nerd dome for lack of a better term and there's something in there for everyone i probably got twenty percent and i'm on geek of the references and saint like as soon as six thirty multiple bucker banzai references in this i'm like a mainstream spiel cuts in that i mean it's crazy were there any having seen it a couple of times that you took special pleasure in that like for me again bucker bonds that hits to my heart for me and edgar right it was the fact that a moment when somebody throws the glade from crawl the i notice that yeah and i noticed like in h is workshop as the one of the pulse from two thousand and one and background i mean and there's so many video game references that i made a point of trying to remember few when i saw it on monday night and now gone a star trek fan of the funeral for well point i think i find it very awkward saying this because it feels like a cynical marketing thing so i'll say it you know whatever however this happens at some point in your lives you don't have to go and sit three times at the cinema this weekend if you don't want to or you can't afford it because it's very expensive to go to the theater i know that but at some point watch this film as many times as you can because this much detail don't do it in the first watch sit back and enjoy the story then you can literally go back and start playing bingo but every cultural touchstone of the last forty years.

"I had an odd sense of on we joining it like i felt kind of disappointed and i couldn't figure out why it ended and i i felt darn and i was like why do i feel down and i realized it was because i've been in it i'd read the script and even contributed a little bit to the script here and there so i've been involved in it and so it wasn't a big surprise so i watched the movie knowing everything that was going to happen so when that big thing happens to one of favorite ever characters it wasn't a surprise and i realized that what what the payoff for for being in it was to have the experience of seeing it removed and i wouldn't swap that because it was an amazing experience but it was a strange one so for this experience was stephen i can call them stephen because we've never talked moon three tintin's obviously much different yeah we won't ruin their avatars involved for most of the actors and here we're not gonna wind different surprises but i say most of your stuff here is live action so is that what's it like to be on stewart set how does it compare to other sets you've been on it was great and it was interesting because my as you say my first experience was performance capture and with that it was he was learning a new craft at that point it was his first movie in in that right what realm and so he was sort of feeling his way but it was a different kind of energy to live action with this film there was a little bit of performance capture where where now he'd learned he could just sit back watch the acting directed later right back in the day when we detention he was holding the camera this sort of performance capture camera looking at it and the shooting as we win you don't need to do that you can actually got you shoot later you get it as a three d event in the computer and then you own that event to shoot however you wanna know still kind of blows me away.
