"That i felt like i could grab onto. A little better is too long. And i think this is common with stage adaptations because those plays have intermissions and they're just designed in people understand that it's a longer experience so toward the end. I was getting a little weary but overall i had a really good time and this movie is one. That was heavily hyped. And that's been kind of a bust at the box office so i don't know why people maybe it's because linneman has this weird You know reputation or whatever. But i mean if you like musicals this is this is a very classic style musical which to me was a positive thing about it sure. Yeah i liked this movie a lot when it was going big like and that's the thing that to me was a little bit of a disappointment about it is that you know especially coming off like crazy. Rich asians like i thought it would be even bigger than it was. It got big at times but then there's a lot of more just kind of slowed down more just normal stage production kind of moments in it But whenever he got big. It was a lot of fun for sure. Yeah i mean that that ninety six thousand the number. I mean that's amazing. That's that's one of my top movie moments for the year. Surely absolutely our number seven for me. This is where i go off the rails and people stop listening. Sonic the hedgehog again. It close enough is mortal combat. This is my list. And i like what i like. What could i say. I i know. People hate this movie. So much but james wan and simon mccoy d- i think they clearly are mortal kombat fans and the thing is. I know a lot of people like to say. How can you make a mortal kombat movie without the tournament. Like that was like the big thing that people love to say. I have this sneaking suspicion that everyone who says that has not played a mortal kombat game since like nineteen ninety-four. Because the thing that this movie to me is mostly an adaptation of is the story mode in the most recent mortal kombat games which is absolutely ridiculous just completely silly b movie less than b. movies z movie type dialogue and storytelling. It's all about double crossing. The jokes are immature. As hell. i mean this is exactly what we got with this adaptation. I will of course nobody is gonna sit here and tell you that cole young is a worthwhile character to include in. This whole story is definitely a waste of time..

That still feels a lot. Like a weird western. Even though it swaps the familiar hero and sidekick roles the other half of this pairing is pretty shirt on sidekicks. Here there are just antagonists and protagonists warriors. Monsters it's based on a fighting video game so all we characters are pretty much equal until they start to face off. I'm so excited to get into mortal combat with you guys carry keeping nonviolent. I'm kidding. Okay, so you you wrote a review of the New Mortal Kombat movie First Light. The title is the new Mortal Kombat movie rules. So I feel like I know the answer is there but tell us what you thought of the movie. I mean, I had so much fun with it. I was talking to a few friends and we were wondering, Do we like this movie so much like because movie going during the pandemic has been kind of such a lackluster year. Or is it just because this movie is genuinely fun? I tend to think the answer to that question is the ladder. It just does a good job of delivering exactly what it's supposed to which is A bunch of guys fighting like that is all that a mortal Kombat movie has to do. And it absolutely accomplishes that. Dave. What about you? Oh, boy. Well, I mean, I'm going to disagree slightly. I did enjoy the movie, but it didn't offer the one thing every Mortal Kombat story is supposed to offer. And that is the Mortal Kombat tournament, folks. Not having the tournament is sort of like Star Wars, not having a war in space in it. So were you a Mortal Kombat fan before this? Absolutely. Yes. I mean, I am of a certain age to have been entranced by the video games, The movies, the whole mythology, the universe of it, So, Yeah, I was kind of expecting. I turn on a movie called Normal Combat. There will be a Mortal Kombat tournament. And yet here we are in this non Mortal Kombat tournament world and I'm very perplexed. We got this voice mail from will in North Carolina. I saw the New Mortal Kombat movie and I really liked it. I say This, of course, is a guy who hasn't really played a lot of it. I have very little outside knowledge. So some people here are saying the main character was bad. I thought, you know, this guy doesn't know anything about Mortal Kombat. I don't know anything about what will combat we're on the same level. The fights were awesome. Music was nice, a good blend of like pleasing the fans and having enough there to to have the federal viewing public understand it. Okay, Geeta. I want to hear your take. Do you think this was Ah, good movie, Or was it good for Mortal Kombat movie? Oh, well, I watched it last night, and I have to say not only did I really have a great time with it. It made me really You're in for the experience of seeing a movie in a theater with other people. There's so many moving moments in this movie that are clearly built like you can really tell. I think it really takes seeing it outside of a movie theater, seeing it alone to see how blockbuster action movies are built differently from other films. You can see that the film is paced towards these intense moments of celebration where everyone in the room is gonna have a vocal reaction. There's so many points where me and my partner returned to each other and just be like I wish we could hear everyone cheering. During this moment, but you know not only that, I felt like you know, it's actually the article up on waypoint today by Cameron Councilman that goes into the plot of the Mortal Kombat games and how this movie actually reflects the expansiveness of the law or more accurately, then reach for doing a re tread of the first original 1995 movie that cover the tournament arc. In fact, you know, Cameron says in this article, which I read this morning, and I think it is Very informative that a lot of the recent games don't actually have a term in dark at all. Or the treatment arc is, you know Ortho agonal or parallel to the actually important lower things are happening. This feels like if this movie feels like it, not only is a wonderful action movie that's a lot of fun that I wish I could see with a lot of people in a big room on a hot, sunny day, but like it reflects the reality of what Mortal Kombat has become in the intervening years since release Stephen Tweets. I have been in Mortal Kombat fan since I spent what must have been over $200 mastering Sonya Blade in 92. I really enjoyed the new movie Love the mythology and the way they explain the characters energy powers. It was ridiculous. But then I'm reminded that it is mortal combat After all. What do you expect? We're talking to Dave Shilling, co host of the Galaxy, Brain podcast, Geeta Jackson from vice and Karen Han from Slate. We sat down with Mortal Kombat director and producer Simon McCoy, the head of this show and asked him about the decision to introduce a new main character for the film, And here's what he had to say There were a couple of reasons actually, the firstly model combat over its The last several decades of its existence, have all that new characters all the time. It's become one of the things so 80 odd characters now and There is precedent. Then we felt it was I kind of do that. It was kind of a mortal Kombat thing to do. And then the other reason is we needed a fresh set of eyes inside the movie to take the audiences through it. It may not be That outside with all the information and more common of which there is a lot. So that was the reason for the man reasons actually, and he as he learned the audience land Allowed us to tomo, unlock and open up some of the information that we needed to Dave. What did you think about the introduction of this new main character, Cole Young. Well, I agree with with Simon about the need to have someone who can express the audience that befuddlement any given point in in a film like this. I think that's Kind of a common trope in genre film making, which is every once in a while. Character needs to say what exactly is going on right now? Who is that? Why is that happening? How come my chest is glowing? That kind of stuff s so it is a pivotal screenwriting trope. In a lot of these movies going all the way back to again. Just a reference Star Wars They feel like Mortal Kombat has a lot in common with Star Wars is Star Wars has multiple point of view characters that ask those questions. If it's Luke, If it's Han solo on then, you know in the in the sequel trilogy, having Ray and and fan asking questions all the time like that's important for these mythology, heavy Films do I feel like it was a fantastic addition to the mythology of Mortal Kombat? No, but I understand why it was there. It was a tool with which to tell this story. That is really probably one of the most elaborate mythologies and all of video games. Karen, what about you? I agree, and then I think he's sort of necessary for the movie because there's so much lore like there's that car that comes up right after the initial sequence that explains the premises of Outworld and Earth realm, and what Mortal Kombat the tournament is. But I feel like having to explain too much of that via initial text to be too much, so it's helpful to have cold there to kind of school details out about like the Kanna about the Mortal Kombat symbols that they all have..

"Been successful in that respect, like Mortal Kombat, obviously is not a very story heavy movie, but things like Detective Peek atyou, for instance, I thought did a pretty good job of translating a movie er transiting a video game from consul to screen in a way that was coherent, didn't really lose the spirit of the games and all and still made sense and was fun as a movie. Well, Fahim email this I played the original mortal combat in an arcade back in 1992 when I was nine, and life has never been the same ever since. The movie was awesome through and through. I liked every character. They each played a pivotal role in the overall plot. Unlike the 95 version, it didn't bother me that there was no actual tournament. I enjoy the character development and build up to it. And Stephen E mails haven't seen the new film. But this conversation is definitely making me want to venture out to theaters or sign up for HBO as For the original movie. I was also the perfect age. When it came out 14 or 15. I finally remember my best friend and I buying the soundtrack on CD Afterwards. I'm sorry. This is some kid out there saying, What's the CD as a movie? Yeah, it's silly, but so was the source material where we ask Mortal Kombat director and producer Simon McCoy it about a potential Mortal Kombat sequel. And here's what he had to say about that. All of us throughout the whole process of the film never talked openly about the s word. We never really talked about Sickles week. You do it. Obviously you do a little tiny bit knowing that there are opportunities there, especially bottle combat, which has such a bunch of rich treasure trove off. Characters and ideas. So yeah, There's obviously stuff sitting around, but we've never really talked about it in great detail. We've done a couple of things in the film, little join the pieces. You could call them, but it's not for us to decide whether there's a sequel. It's whether the fans and the new audiences um and super fans, whether they like the film enoughto one of sickle, and then if they do then, of course. I mean name. Did you get the feeling we're watching this movie that they weren't thinking about a sequel potential? I always laughed during that clip of him saying we were talking about a sequel. No, of course you work again. I have to stress this again and I don't Some people don't care what you're wrong for. Not Carrie. There's no tournament in this movie. They're building to the tournament. And John he, Kate. Sorry. Spoiler alert. Johnny Cage is teased at in the last scene of the movie. We're gonna go find Johnny Cage. Look, this is this is designed from the beginning to be a franchise and I think one of the things that we have not talked about when it comes to video game adaptations in in feature films is the most important question, which is why Why are we making these movies? Why do we feel like me to take something like the last of us, which is a great story? Hold very well in its original medium and make it less less interesting by making it a flat TV adaptation like What are we doing this for? I think with Mortal Kombat. It makes a certain amount of sense because their elements of the storytelling that are missing it's a fighting game. But there is this mythology, so it kind of fits nicely into Uh, medium where you can expand the characters and have more things happening, and for them to have rich inner lives. Hopefully, as Thies, this franchise continues. With something like death, stranding or the last of us. These are things that are already perfect. Why would we want to make movies out of them with the medium of video games has Matured so much that it can stand next to a movie and say We're just it's good as you I'm Jenn White. You're listening to one, eh? We're talking to Dave Shilling, co host of the Galaxy, Brain podcast, Kita Jackson from vice and Karen Han from Slate. So we got this message from Moon Bird who tweets video game movies or proof that Hollywood had just bet against original material in favor of money in the bank. Art is not dead, but it's a needle in studio cities. Haystack and get. I wonder if that is part of the answer to Dave's question. Why are we making these movies that such a cynical and really sad way to look at art? You know, it makes me really upset when people are just like blew. Everybody's just doing things for money. We live in a capitalist class society. You need to have money to live. I'm sorry. It really, you know. Video game movies. There's Especially in the case of something like the last of us, which was so self consciously designed to mimic a mode of television, You know, the prestige television of the Sopranos or madman. It's really clear sometimes why people like in the case of the last of us, Neil Druckman himself wanted to translate these stories from video games into movies. Or into television ships. You know there If you are a person who has designed a video game that is clearly heavily inspired by different kinds of television shows that of Aaron, HBO, the chance to adapt it into that medium is I'm sure irresistible to you, especially because they've gotten such an incredible cast with delayed gigolo toe Loop. Diego Diego Luna. I don't know what happened there on Frederic Pascal, who I think is the only good celebrity. Um I just I feel like there's nothing less like guaranteed then the adaptation of a video game into a movie right there. Historically, you know, cool. Look, we only known as being incredibly bad. The potential of having a built in fan base is You know, pretty enticing. I'm sure but not the as and you know, it isn't not a guarantee of success, especially in a world where the biggest movies that make the most money in the bank are ones that are just like within this Marvel Studios keep machine Um I feel like the desire to the enemy. The Tutut adapt these things in some of them. Cases of the more recent video game annotations really do come down to you, Uh, The director and the people in the project. Having an interested in mortal combat is more of a corporate product. But there is absolutely you know, we are reaching a point where the people that group of Mortal Kombat are now the major drivers of the economy. It is like our time for our entertainment to be the mainstream, and that's that is the reflection we're seeing. This is more necessarily If there's any sort of time to chase the money here, it's attempted cheese millennials where the people setting it. We should mention the original while the Mortal Kombat video game originally came out in 1992, so yeah. The people of a certain age are with disposable income, perhaps are going to the movies. Go ahead, Dave. Real briefly. Oh, I just wanted to pick piggyback off of this and say, I think the question is certainly not about money. I think the question of why should always come down to Art. Whether or not it feels as though the story told in the video game can be told differently, or with some kind of unique quality that could only come from movie or a television show. Like I just think it's not about it shouldn't be about money. It should be about What can we do that special here? Well, Mortal Kombat was released in theaters and on the streaming platform. HBO Max. So was Godzilla versus calling. That's another fact Fantasy action movie that's doing well financially. We got the street from Justin, Who says, Does this mean we could finally get a halo movie? And Karen? I'm wonder what you think. You know, this says about the types of movies people wanna watch right now on what we might see in the future. I mean, I think I guess to be cynical. I'm sorry, gate it like there is a certain degree to which I feel like people want to see more of the things that they're familiar with, and the more of the things that they like, which is like why, for example, like I am interested in the last of a serious and I'm interested to see what they do. Especially, I will say, because it partially because I'm a scaredy cat and can't get through the games on the road like I want to see the movie so I can experience the whole thing in some format..

They're not going to be sending us streaming links anymore. Oh, okay. Was it Was it nice to be back? Itwas It was very fun. It was good to see friends. I'm fully vaccinated now. So I could like, you know, say hi to people without having to be so distant and everything. Most many of the critic, many Democratic friends are fully back. So it's like old home week. Didn't movie critics get vaccine before anybody else? I thought one thing on the front of the priority list from liberal Hollywood. You know, your way were promised that by liberal Hollywood Wow. Okay, wait. Let's Part with the art sees Yes, Before we get the Mortal Kombat. We've got one Artie we can talk about. It's called together together. This actually wasn't Sundance this year, which, of course, we saw streaming on video, a non viral or virtual video. This one stars Ed Helms and these sort of perfect Ed Helms characters and nerdy rich guy. He wants to be a father. Since he's not dating anybody. He decides he's going to hire a young woman to be pregnant with his child. What they call it just a just a shingle surrogate. Okay, That's where that's where Anna comes in. She's played by Patty Harrison and she's a barista. She's 26. She needs the money to get the college degree that she missed out on. Amuse early. This is a really funny movies with smart movie All I love how it sort of digs into the way relationships are transactional, one way or another. Uh, Ed Helms at house is really good here. Hattie Harrison gives a breakout performance. So I was not familiar with Patty Harrison. She has been in like search party and shrill. You know, one of those people that apparently just hangs out with other funny people on it, and it turns out it's because she's really funny, too. And here she is really fun, and she's really touching and and, yeah, zoo standout sort of breakthrough performance for her s 0 3.5 stars for together together and that's that's playing. It's a megaplex theaters around him. Don't get in half for together together, All right, so mortal Combo Act. Yeah, You're supposed to say it like that. I think you're supposed to say, And they even comment about how well how it's misspelled with a K. I don't know if they decide to throw that in for memory. So 1st 1st off, Okay, We have to agree on one thing here, Which is that the game? Mortal Kombat is a really silly game. You know, it's it's a bunch of one on one martial arts by two people who don't remember Mortal Kombat because it's you know, it's always the most of the players that this well. It is a bunch of one on one martial arts fights, and it's always It's always about the finishing those right. It's like blasting a hole somebody or ripped ripping out their spine. Taking, pulling their heart out and having a beating all that kind of money. So putting a mythology and a backstory toe all that Is What this movie is about. And you realize very quickly. Why are you bothering there's You know, there's a reason you wanna pull his spine out. There's a reason why, because I don't know him. Yeah. But you've got all you got all the stuff about the earth. Rome fighting and fighting in the tournament against other worlds and Outworld, which is the evil world if they be Earth one more time than they will enslave Earth forever. Well, that sounds compelling. Yeah, well, it's OK for and get to the fighting, huh? First, you have to say, we know First we have to show one of the main bad guys sub zero. Mm hmm. Uh, 03 Sorry. My alarm went off in the middle of the, uh, subject. He freezes his enemies and any kid in the intro. You see him killing this. Japanese warrior named Han So and this this becomes important later before we get to that, though we have to get to the main hero who's not the character not in the game Call Young is an M. M a fighter. And he's aired to the Mortal Kombat legacy, which means sub zero and the other bad guys have to kill him before he can fulfill his destiny on there's all this talk about the prophecy, and you know, before I get to the fighting, get on, and eventually they do get to the fighting and Everybody has a special skill that they have to develop. And then then they fight the bad guys. And the fight scenes are pretty cool. Once they go on the guy that directed this new guy named Simon McCoy. He's he's a He's a TV commercial guy and video game guy, and so he gets the visual style, right? And more importantly, he doesn't This is not like the 95 version where it was. PG 13. This is rated R. Blood gushing and spurting everywhere. It's like watching kill Bill. And you know, it s so It's just like the game. The game fans will love that the problem as a sort of just here, is it? Yes, The game is really silly, and the movie isn't silly enough. Mm. It really should It really should. It really should lean into the skin here. You know, if it doesn't it should really show how ridiculous this always and it doesn't quite do that. Um, when when it doesn't take itself seriously. It can be a lot of fun. So sorry was split decision here. I gave her 2.5 stars. Who's you? Who's Who's in this movie? Anybody know not very many people and not very many people I recognize the most recognizable guy I recognized was the cat Brooks Plays jacks along with Robot arms, and the cat. Brooks is Jimmy Olsen on Supergirl. That's That's the most recommended that I I saw. There's something there's another guy who's like a former power ranger, like the movie Power Ranger. And, you know, a couple a couple major Japanese start. You know, Chinese or Japanese on Dwan of each, actually, uh, stars, But if you know, like, you know, fancy art house movies, you'd recognize them, but Not a lot of not a lot of like big names, so we should approach this like we did with Godzilla versus con, which is just fast forward through all of the talking and just get right to the fighting. Right. And and this is going to be on HBO. Max as well as in theaters. Okay, being in the theater yesterday, I forgot. Oh, yeah. I can't pause it when I need to use the bathroom, so I'll actually miss admitted here and there. But it's relax. Yeah, you can. You can skim through the boring stuff and get straight to the finish him part exactly. All right, That's exactly what I'm gonna do. The stars. Did you give it 2.5 to just 2.5 to nap? All right, 2.5 for mortal combat and 3.5 4 together together, Sean quickly before we go. Uh, two cult directors died recently. The guy who directed the stunt Man and the guy Monte Hellman, the guy who directed two lane blacktop. Are you familiar with either of those movies and I know that I know the stuntman pretty well..

"It's so interesting to see how they were shooting. The i mean. It's all the stuff that we talked about on the podcast in the past. It's not like a huge revelations but seeing them shooting that first episode in front of a live studio audience actually getting to see the set design and color. because you only see in black and white not episode Seeing how they were shooting everything with like the weapons of the era and how it all comes together it also. It's so some people were like wondering like did the cast and crew of the show think that everybody was going to have like all these theories and stuff like that. And there's like one moment in the show i think elizabeth olsen onset. I think shooting the first episode. And she's like think she's excited to see the fan theories so so clearly. They knew that that was coming. Maybe not to the level that it came but Out if you if you have seen the mandalorian the disney gallery mandalorian specials than you like that It's edited in the same way and has kind of the same Excitement to it. Like you feel like you're onset watching some of being made a do you get any like drama is or anything like you know insightful. Not really but I in the one disappointment. I would say about it is. It doesn't really get into the weeds of of Production during coded. I think that would have been interesting. Because that shut down production in an end of restarting in california. And i think they could have gone more into that will but i'm sure they didn't want to have any negativity in this thing because it's disney but Yes that's assembled. The making of one division is on disney plus. Check it out chris. What else watching Got to see the first thirteen ish. Minutes of the new mortal kombat movie because i Was on a A media event of a roundtable interview with the director. Simon mccoy d- and i wrote about all this on slash all dot com. So i encourage you all to read it but the first thirteen minutes pretty good. It's it's it's a very very violent movie which is fitting since. The games are so violent and the original mortal kombat movie which came in the nineties had pg thirteen rating so it it toned down the blood and gore but This one is already so. They're really leaning into that. That are rating to the point. Where it's almost like overdone. Like in the first thirteen minutes is like a big fight sequence in people get stabbed a lot and the blood that flies out of them is like it's more blood than humans having their body. So it's gonna be a little. It's gonna take a little getting used to. I guess when i but you know it's it's hard to talk about the movie as a whole because like i said it's only the first few minutes but i liked what i saw so far I do think the movie has little. It's it's it's taking. It's a little too seriously. I guess is how i think like the the opening scene. It's in the sixteen hundreds and it shows scorpion and sub zero before they become scorpion and sub zero. But there they still have a rivalry and then they're fighting and it's doing some things that like a lot of tentpole franchises do that. I don't think they need to do in that. It's it's giving back stories of things we don't need like you literally learn the backstory of that grope hook thing that flies scorpions hands and and a part. I don't really need to know where that came from. I accepted that. He has a hook rope in his hands. Like i don't need a back story on that. But other than that. I liked what i saw sephora. I'm looking forward to seeing the full movie as a whole and like i said i have a write up of what i saw and i ever write up of my very very brief conversation with a direct. It was a round table interview for people who don't know interviews a lot of times. You only get one question. 'cause you're you're dealing with like fifty other people and that's what happened here so but i i wrote up some other things. He said other people so check it out slash home dot com and will link that in the show notes. Brad been watching not much. But.

He did the standard. I can't really comment on that. But of course it'd be excited to be in a superhero movie. What gives us a little bit more evidence? That probably is going to be in the journals is there was a recent men's health profile about him and he's been working out and working with a personal L. trainer because he realized that the the one thing that was keeping him from getting <hes> bigger leading man roles and like doing more action stuff was the fact that he was not you know in super great physical shape not that he was out of shape necessarily but he's not toned isn't a lot of muscle work so it sounds like he's probably doing the same kind of thing Chris Pratt to get in shape <hes> for guardians of the Galaxy and then Kevin Feige he was asked about these two and he also said he's like he's like those these great actors that ain't GonNa firm right now. The additional name that he was asked about was Donnie yen who has also been rumored for this movie by the same kind of thing where they're just not ready to announce anything yet and really basically we just have to wait until comic on to find out what they're gonNA tell us. I think maybe all your Brown's. Liar I think she'd give me onstage comic with you. We'll see we'll see <hes>. I'm really curious what they're gonNA show us a COMECON and I think I finally realized Brad that the only thing that's keeping me away from being in a marvel cinematic the University of them is I'm not working at so so media doing that debt salads okay. Let's move on to mortal combat <hes> they once did a mortal Kombat movie. I think some people consider sitter it to be the best video game movie of all time. I'm not sure if that's true or not. No no no way no way people consider it to be their favorite like if you go most of them. If you look at this on the Internet it is up there that resident evil level and I think like maybe tomb raider. I think the top three I think it's just thrown them all. Even that's not a great movie yeah <hes> well looks like they're gonNa make another mortal Kombat movie and this was GonNa be rated R. Jacob. What do we know yeah? We know about this mortal Kombat reboot for some time at James Wan of conjuring command famous producing and commercial director Simon McCoy is making his directorial feature debut at it and it's still a little ways away. I think we're expecting a twenty twenty one release date but screenwriter Greg Russo tweeted since it's already been stated by other members of the team. I'M GONNA put us on the bed..
